Speaker A: This is W7X Ray Zulu calling the Oroville Amateur Radio Society. Sunday night net. This net meets Sunday evenings at 8pm local time. And good evening to all. This is Jim, your net control station for tonight. And. And, well, let's see who's out there. Stations wishing to check into the net, please call now. This W7X Ray Zulu,
Speaker B: KO6 Git, Kf6ewo, K6 8jfp.
Speaker A: This is w7x ray zulu and I have three checked in here and it's a good evening again here for three who are in the zoom session. K06 git. Good evening again, kim, kf6ewo. Good evening again gary and k6hfp. Good evening again, john. Do we have any additional check in to the net? This is w7x ray zulu. Now, nothing heard. Might be kind of a light session tonight here. Anyway, let's jump to the roundtable mode here, K06 Git. Ken, you're going to be leading off and if you would pass it to KF6 Echo, Whiskey Oster, that's Gary and Gary you'll be passing it to K6HFP. So Ken, go ahead please. K06 git and the net, W7XL.
Speaker B: Well thank you everybody. This is Ken, K06G I T. Ken in Brownsville. I've missed you guys. I've had, like I said, some. I had a house guest that was over here for Sunday night dinner. As far as radio is concerned, I've been playing around. I gotta. I had some extra funds for Christmas
Speaker A: so I bought a
Speaker B: signal analyzer so I can test some of these cheaper Chinese pieces of crap to see exactly how dirty they are. But other than that I haven't doing a whole lot other than radio other than getting ready to hang a tower and go from there. I'll pass it to Gary, K6E W. Oh thanks Ken.
Speaker C: This is KF6EWO. Gary in Oroville. I've just been busy working southern at the school district. I've done a little playing around on the radio. Had to do some yard, yard work, you know, kind of distractions there, but not a whole lot going on on this end. So with that I'll pass it over to John, K6HFP, KF6EWO, KF6EWO and the net. This is K6HFP. Thanks Gary. This is John up Norville. Out of ten for me this week. Kind of went by pretty quick. Kind of missing the rain a little bit these days. Haven't had any in a couple days, so kind of looking forward to the next rain. But definitely when we're getting the rain, I'm gonna be like, can't this rain stop? Anyways, one thing I thought that was pretty cool is the that Dragon capsule entry re entry that went on this this week. I was kind of thinking, well we
Speaker A: probably won't see it.
Speaker C: I went outside when it was supposed to be re entering and sure enough saw it shooting across the sky it was a lot faster than I thought it was gonna be. But also I kind of thought it was gonna be a little bit faster than I did see it. So I mean, I thought it was a little slower than it was supposed to be, but definitely was jamming up there because at the altitude it was going faster than what planes would be. You know, it definitely was faster than in planes, for sure it was jamming. But that was cool to see and you know, you don't see reentries very often, especially in this part of California. So anyways, the X flare that we had today is supposed to be producing some geomagnetic storms in a couple days. So we'll be looking for that. Maybe it'll be as good as a couple months months ago. Maybe it won't even happen. We'll see what happens. Other than that, that's all I got for now. Hope everybody's doing good. And I'll pass it Back to Jim W7X Ray Zulu and the net K6HFP.
Speaker A: K6HFP and the net W7XZ. Okay, John, very good. And well, I can recall one evening right around our local sundown one summer catching the International Space Station making pass. And that was kind of spectacular. Well, you got to realize, of course, things going, what, somewhere around 15, 16 miles an hour. And it does tend to move across the sky pretty well there, staying in orbit. Well, before I ramble a bit here, I'll put out a call. Do we have any additional check ins to the NAS W7X Rays? Nothing heard. Not too awfully much to report here as far as radio operating and all that. Aside from keeping a morning schedule on 75 meters with a couple friends, I managed a couple FD8 contacts at least to have some 20, 26 log data in the log database here in the computer. But that's been about it. And aside from that, I've been just kind of keeping up on things, getting set to hopefully get going on income tax when the different 1099 forms show up in the mail and all that. And my appointment on Friday in Chico and be looking for getting my periodic treatment there to ward off the macular degeneration.
Speaker B: The only other thing is we 6A XM receiver.
Speaker A: The only other thing is I had a couple mornings where I had power outages. I have a couple uninterruptible power supplies here and one of them was still working. The other one though, apparently the battery went away in it. So hopefully on Friday on my trip to Chico, I'll be taking that unit with me and telephone conversation with batteries plus bulbs there indicates that
Speaker B: they can
Speaker A: install new new battery in the uninterruptible power supply there and it'll be quite a bit less than say buying a new unit. Anyway, so much for that. I'll run it back up the line here at this time. Does any station have any additional comments
Speaker B: for the Nat this W7XZ KS6080 Go ahead Ken. Yeah, well I didn't watch the re entry of the capsule. I knew it was coming in. It's a medical emergency. They had to evacuate an astronaut from the ISS and that's what was occurring. And while I didn't witness it, that was something here. But I follow quite regularly the space launches and things that are happening up there. And I was driving up actually strangely to my club meeting in Nevada county and one evening going down through Browns Valley I saw a very strange contrail in the sky and I was like going could that be a launch? And I marked with time down for it and I went home and then found it was indeed what I was seeing was the rocket. What I was seeing was the contrail from the launch and it's. I've seen a couple other things. I drove out, I mean I was trying to drive up in 86 to see the first shuttle launch from, from Vandenberg but then was that was canceled because of the Challenger accident so I didn't get to go see that. So I've never seen a launch. But I, I followed things with rockets for a long time.
Speaker A: Right.
Speaker B: Driving across one time from Mojave to Tehachapi, I noticed on Highway 58 all these vehic vehicles pulled off to the side. I was curious what's going on because you're just north of Edwards and what they were watching was going to be a solid fuel booster test that was not close but it was in the distance, you could watch it and it was strange because of the distance of sound. You saw it ignite and you're watching it burn and then you get the sound. KO6JT.
Speaker A: Ko6 git and the net W7X. Okay, Ken. And yeah, quite interesting. I don't see any other station have
Speaker B: additional comments for the Napis W7X KF6EW.
Speaker A: Go ahead Gary.
Speaker C: Yeah, I was just thinking it's just me and you probably on the 10 meter net. Did you want to just skip it for tonight?
Speaker A: Oh, I think I could forego it.
Speaker C: Okay, sounds like a plan. I just wanted to get that in there, just the two of us. So I don't see any point in even messing with it
Speaker A: actually Sounds good to me. Oh let's see John, anything additional for the net kf6h k6hfp and the net
Speaker C: w7xzip k6hfp yeah, unfortunately I don't have my 10 meter antenna up tonight but hopefully next week go for that. We'll shoot for that. One other thing I was going to mention was just a reminder for the test session that we're going to be having in March. March 13 I'm shooting for my extra upgrade so we'll be studying for that and just a reminder for anybody that might want to Upgrade and stuff March 13 at in Orville and
Speaker B: I think
Speaker C: Jim is planning on sending some information out for that as well pretty soon. So other than that that's all I got back to you Jim.
Speaker A: K6HMP K6HFP and the net W7X said okay John. Yeah I'm planning on essentially putting out multiple pieces of email about it and convey hopefully any interested licensees seeking upgrade or any prospect of new licensee is most welcome to that session on March 13th in Oroville.
Speaker B: K06GIT
Speaker A: Go ahead Ken.
Speaker B: Yeah, I might try to shoot for that. That sounds like a good time frame. I really push it forward on my study time on this. I'm curious here if I have a 10 meter I know I'm reading about propagation through radio and antennas but if I have a vertical I know you're not it's going to give interference trying to talk to other horizontal or dipole. Can you hear me at all if I set up a 10 meter vertical?
Speaker A: Well it kind of depends on surrounding objects and a few things like that which would detract from say pure vertical polarization. As far as working skywave the context through the ionosphere on 10 meters horizontal or vertical polarization ends up kind of random anyway after bouncing off the ionosphere once or so.
Speaker B: Okay, next week I will have that set up and I will attempt to do the 10 meter band after this next and see what we do.
Speaker A: Okay, very good. Well horizontal polarization I found has worked pretty well as far as our local 10 meter net and Joe N9BD up in Dobbins has actually been able to We've been able to hear each other on 10 Sunday nights when he checks in.
Speaker B: Yeah I, I know Joe, I. I need to talk with him because I'm ready now this spring to try to set up a balance in my tallest
Speaker A: tree and string
Speaker B: wire up to it back and forth for A horizontal dipole. But I mean. Or I'm actually probably going to do an inverted V. But I want to set up a couple other type of antennas. I don't have a tower so I'm going to try doing a long wire for getting for the higher lower bands. What do you want to call it for? That's the way I want to try doing it.
Speaker A: There are all kinds of options as far. Well, depending on the location and all that. What you have available for natural antennas, for supports and the like. I kind of do what I can here and essentially I've got an inverted L. The vertical part of it is about 50ft and the flat top was made to be about 130ft. So it would be on the order of a quarter wave on 160 meters which kind of of optimized there. But the antenna, I have an automatic remote tuner I use at the bottom of the wire there to tune it actually on every band 160 through 10 meters, including the work bands and 60 meters as well.
Speaker B: Do you have a tower?
Speaker A: Well, I brought one down with me from Nevada back in 2006. It's still lying on the ground. I haven't tried erecting it and actually at this point in my advanced years and all that, I would probably be in need of quite a bit of help to get the thing up also. The question being just where would I want to put put it here on the property?
Speaker B: If you wanted to sell it, let me know. W E Z A S M receiver
Speaker A: I do have some tall digger pines on the property though, which have enabled allowed me to get some antennas up. Well, let's see, the end of the Inverted L is about 670ft off the ground at the far end anyway, which kind of helps with working on just about all the bands.
Speaker B: I know that he has a pneumatic launcher to launch something over the top. But I might pay a climber this spring to climb my tallest tree and set up a rig and pulley so I can move it up and down if I need to. And I can then rig that into my station where I'm on right now.
Speaker A: Well, I've utilized slingshot with
Speaker B: half half
Speaker A: ounce fishing weights and fish line to get some ropes up in the trees. I have a pneumatic tennis ball gone here that I've been able to get some ropes up at the 70 foot level and some of these digger pines here.
Speaker B: Yeah, I just might just want to pay a climber to climb up and make it completely permanent, get a good limb, do some trimming so I don't get interference from touching other wires. It would be that expensive? It kind of looked around it, but, yeah, that's kind of. I might want to do something and then have the tennis ball cannon. I'll call it as a backup type thing. Or the slingshot at the end. I know about doing that with a fishing weight and all of that. I actually have all of that. So it's time now to put a permanent high antenna in one of my trees.
Speaker A: Well, it's good to know a tree climber, that's for sure.
Speaker B: I can advertise up here. I'm sure I can find somebody.
Speaker A: Okay, very good. All right, guys, thank you very much for the evening. I enjoyed talking with you all. I'm going to be clear now. This is Ko6git Ken in Brownsville. 73. 73 Ken. And thanks for the check in tonight and glad to have you joining Zoom tonight too. Well, I'll put out another call here. Do we have any additional check ins to of the net? This W7X Ray
Speaker B: Zulu. Nothing hurt. I think
Speaker A: we kind of got it done here tonight. I'll make this the last call for any late check ins or any unfinished business before closing the net. This W7XZ
Speaker C: and
Speaker B: 3 CKF in Volcano. November 3rd charlie kilo foxtrot. M3ckf.
Speaker A: Do I have your call? Right as
Speaker C: november 3rd
Speaker A: charlie kilo foxtrot. This is w7xz.
Speaker C: N3 ckf. Are you there? This is w7x ray zulu. Darn. I was
Speaker A: hoping you'd reply.
Speaker C: I do have
Speaker A: a naval academy classmate that lives up there in volcano. N3 ckf. N3 ckf, this w7x ray zulu. Are you there?
Speaker B: Nothing heard. I guess we lost it.
Speaker A: Well, I'll try one more. Do we have any? I'll make this one more. Last call, late check ins or any unfinished business before we close in at this W7X Ray Zulu.
Speaker B: Nothing heard.
Speaker A: Thank you for the check ins all. And this net will convene again at 8pm this coming Sunday evening. This is W7X Ray Zulu signing the Oroville Amateur Radio Station Society Sunday night Net clear. And good evening to all.
