Speaker A: Wp6axm repeater, bb9mys,
Speaker B: Ko6git,
Speaker A: Have this handheld soon.
Speaker B: Again. Where are you located?
Speaker A: I am standing in the middle of my living room in Orland on my hand hill.
Speaker B: Well, I'm in Brownsville. I'm KO6 kilo, Oscar 6, golf, India, tango, cannon, Brownsville.
Speaker A: Yeah, I think I've talked to you. I think I've talked to you before. KB9MYS, Jeff in Orland. I was just seeing if I can hit the repeater from inside the trailer from Orland. I guess I can hear it on the bit. The radio and that stuff seems to sound pretty clear.
Speaker B: Sound fine enough to me. I'm up here in Brownsville. I'm monitoring.
Speaker A: Believe it or not, I'm using.
Speaker B: And where were you again? Did you see Orlando?
Speaker A: Yes, I did.
Speaker B: Well, in a few weeks or so I will be up your way because I want to go to the olive pit.
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm not surprised I can hit the repeater at all with a 3 inch stubby antenna.
Speaker B: You're getting in there, Peter. You're a little scratchy, but I can hear you.
Speaker A: Yeah, I can hear that also, but I'm surprised it's usable at all.
Speaker B: Well, we're supposed to get some snow up here tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.
Speaker A: Yeah, there might not be very many people driving around. A lot of people around here don't know how to drive with.
Speaker B: Yeah, I understand. I do a Skywarn net in the morning for the NCARC on 147285 or 015 up here and I give a report at 7:30. Tune in or join if you wish to.
Speaker A: Hello from a week.
Speaker B: What kind of radio are you using?
Speaker A: I'm using the 5 RM and this one's the best. 13 watts?
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm pushing out 25. Well, you're still a little scratchy. I can. I can understand a bit what you're saying, but I heard you come in and I thought I'd be fine because nobody else sent me out here tonight. I'm going to be back clear ko, state the jit. Good talking to you.
Speaker A: I'm probably not scratching now. I'm on the other radio. Yeah, I'm surprised. The handheld did the job with a straight 3 inch stubby from how far is it from Portland to the repeater? 40 or 50 miles. That's pretty good. Okay, talk to you later. All right, we'll finish up with this.
Speaker B: And I'm not that far away from the sot of beauty, Peter, which you're on. Right Now I'm probably 27 at 30 miles away.
Speaker A: Yeah, but I'm. I'm probably about 40 or 50 in New Orleans.
Speaker B: You're very much clearing out. You did something to improve your signal.
Speaker A: That's what screen.
Speaker B: Copy that. It seems to have done something.
Speaker A: Yeah, I went from 13 watt to 25 watt and an outside antenna.
Speaker B: Well, that's what I'm talking to you on as a 25 watt with an outside roof mounted antenna.
Speaker A: My antenna is only about 10ft off the ground right now, but it works. Yeah, I know where the repeater is. It's quite a ways from here.
Speaker B: Yes, I know where the repeater is in the Sutter butte.
Speaker A: Yeah, I've driven to where I can. I can see it on the south butte. And I think it's about 40 miles from where I'm at.
Speaker B: Well, you're probably about then 65 miles away from me.
Speaker A: Yeah. And this handheld, I'm one of these. I'm gonna pick this handheld up to less than. Not when there's snow there. But I know the mobile radio. I can get into the repeater from Lassen. And handheld, I can get in from Donner Summit.
Speaker B: Yeah, we have a repeater op that we can get into Donner Summit. We do? Skywarn, I said. And it's a linked repeater system and we can get a signal out of Donner.
Speaker A: Yeah, but I can hit this repeater from Donner Summit with my handheld.
Speaker B: And I didn't catch. What is your handheld,
Speaker A: Jeff?
Speaker B: Now I'm asking what your radio was. Your handheld radio.
Speaker A: Oh, it's the, the BFing5RM.
Speaker B: I don't know that. That number. Who makes that? Copy, I got that. Now I have a uv fiber I never use any longer. I. For my handhelds, I use a ocean motion. What do you call it? W o u x u n for both this radio I'm talking to you on and my handheld.
Speaker A: Yeah. I have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 uv 5s and 2 quan chengs and then the 5 rim. And. I'm trying to get my assistant her to go get her license. She said she took a sample test online and passed 100%. She should get her license. I told her I'd give her a UV5R if she passed the test.
Speaker B: I have an open invite to any person I know that manages to get their tech. I will buy them a UV5R.
Speaker A: Yeah, they're only $20. The 5 RM was $32.
Speaker B: I'm not that generous. I understand, but I'm. I Will get them a radio they can talk on if they pass their tech.
Speaker A: Yeah, with the Chinese radios, ham radio is getting to be not that expensive of a hobby anymore. Used to be really expensive. The HF is kind of expensive. I have a. The radio that is $450. A. My mind went blank. It's a. It's a Zygote G90. It was at 20 watts and I charged people all over the world with. It was just 20 watts and that wasn't cheap.
Speaker B: WP6AES N repeater. Well, my HF rig is a Yaesu FT710AES and that's a Japanese radio. So that's my expensive rig. I don't need to have an expensive rig to do on vhf, uhf, vc.
Speaker A: Yeah. Eventually I'm gonna get a Japanese HF rig or a couple of them so I can have one in the car to mess the from in the car at the Winco parking lot in Chico on 10 meters, I talked to a guy in Japan and then talked to a guy in Australia while my wife was in the store shopping.
Speaker B: Yeah, I understand. I mean, I've talked to some people in foreign countries also. Now my farthest on VHF is I managed to promote this house here. On this receiver I'm on right now. I'm trying to. Receiver I'm on right now, I'm able to talk to Weaverville.
Speaker A: That's pretty good. When I was in Indiana, when I was running low power on a handheld up to a. It was 10ft off the ground. I was in Middlebury, Indiana, and I heard people on a repeater in West Virginia calling me. That was two states away, about 800 miles I was running. I was getting into their repeater in West Virginia. I was running 50 microwatts of power, which at that time, when I lived there, I always ran 50 microwatts of power on 2 meters. I didn't turn it up unless I got maybe 30 miles out from the repeater. And then it started getting scratchy. But pretty much all the time, I just ran 50 microwatts.
Speaker B: It's amazing. To get that load and do that, I tend to blast out my power.
Speaker A: I try to use the lowest amount
Speaker B: of power I can.
Speaker A: Back when I was on the CB and from Chico, I was running 200 milliwatts. I talked to a guy in Prescott, Arizona, and. And that's when I was running 200 milliwatts. He said, oh, turn it up. Let's see what it sounds like. I cranked it up suddenly to 10 watts. And it literally blew him out of his chair.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm an old CB guy myself until it just went to kind of crap because you're supposed to be limited to 4 watts output. And some of these guys with prannies amplifiers to crank up 100 plus watts of output. And then of course they put on these echo mics which is just obnoxious. And I kind of lost interest in CB about that time. Moved over to gmrs.
Speaker A: Yeah, I used to have one reading CB that on side band I would make all kinds of contacts. And on sideband you're allowed to run 12 watts. Well, this radio would only do 10. And people would say that they'd hear my audio was so loud that they'd see the needle moving with a signal that somebody's putting out 5,000 watts. But all they hear is my audio just blasting over the top of everything.
Speaker B: I was a young man at the time. I couldn't afford a sideband CB at the time so I just had to go with what I had. But I kind of got driven a little away from cb.
Speaker A: Oh, I did choose all the hate and discontent and. And all that. If they would have dropped them that trouble with the morse code, if they would have dropped the morse code requirement, I could have gotten my license when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old.
Speaker B: Yeah, I was a young boy scout getting into radio and I would have to learn more to get up into ham. But they dropped that. And so I decided just recently because I know it's expensive but I've had some money recently. So I decided, okay, this is the time to get in. Jaham. I'm up general now and I'm studying for my extra.
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm going to be studying for my extrel. So.
Speaker B: Yeah, and I, it's. People laugh at me because I took my general test for my bathroom.
Speaker A: Oh, I took my. I went to Chica to do mine. I like to do it in person. Yeah, it'd be nice to have an extra class. Here's some frequencies that are extra class frequencies and I can't go there because I'm only a general class.
Speaker B: Exactly that. In the same way I monitor them but I can't transmit legally on them. So I just observe occasionally. But I like to be done with testing and have the full band Grimm available to me.
Speaker A: Yes, another class. It's also easier to get a permit to operate in other countries from other countries. And one of these days I want to do a parks on the air from Calderon park in downtown Cuenca, Ecuador. But I don't think I'll be able to do it this year. But maybe. Maybe next. Maybe a year from this summer, I might do it. I'm planning on this summer. If everything works out right. I'm going to spend the summer in Ecuador. It's just too hot here. And up on the mountains in Ecuador, it's nice and cool, around 70 degrees all summer long. Well, it'll be winter there, actually.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm quite familiar with Ecuador. I haven't been there, but I know where it is. I have only been out of the country to Mexico and Canada, so I'm kind of a USA boy. But I do parks on the air also.
Speaker A: And
Speaker B: it's just. I do it from home, obviously. And I haven't actually done a. I guess I'm a hunter. I'm not a. That's all I do.
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm actually seriously considering moving there. The US is just too expensive and just. The culture just doesn't work for me. I want something else. But I'm gonna go check it out this summer and probably go again next summer, too, and keep going. If I decide I want to move there for a while, I'm gonna be there every summer. And then eventually I'll move all my stuff there and rent a house and eventually buy a house.
Speaker B: I can understand that. I have a friend who goes down every year to Costa Rica.
Speaker A: Yeah. I'm looking for a culture that's more fun and where people are more friendly, friendlier culture. Most places I've just run into mean people. I'm just kind of sick of it.
Speaker B: Yeah, I can understand that. But if
Speaker A: you dropped out.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know why I did that. I. I understand that there are some mean people in the United States and in other parts of the world.
Speaker A: There are
Speaker B: nice people. Ecuador, Costa Rica, in Peru, a lot of good people.

Speaker A: Oh yeah. I always get along well with people from Central America. I haven't met any very many people from Ecuador, but I got along with them. People from that part of the world seem to be easier to get along with. And one of the things I like about Ecuador is it is legal to have a gun. And that's one requirement for a country for me to move to. They gotta have, they gotta allow people to have guns and they do in Ecuador.
Speaker B: W E6A X N repeater. I was not aware of that. But I am a strong second right, second amendment rights person. I have a loaded gun, safety safe with my own firearms. But I was not aware of that from Ecuador. That's information I did not know.
Speaker A: Yeah, I believe Costa Rica allows you to have guns. They don't treat it as a right, they treat it as a privilege. But if you jump through a few hoops, that's easier than a lot of states in the United States. Then you jump through a few hoops, they'll issue you the privilege. And it's not really that hard to do.
Speaker B: KB9MYF KO6GIT yes, years ago I hunted in Mexico and I took the steps to do all the procedures down there to bring my shotguns down there to hunt. You can't have a handgun in Mexico, you can't have a handgun in Canada.
Speaker A: No. But you can carry concealed. In Ecuador they do have concealed carry. One of the things they, you know, after you do all the stuff and you get your permit that lets you own a gun that you buy or import one I'll be able to import. They let you have handguns and stuff but they don't let you have everything. The bigger calibers are military, but I'm not really interested in a.45 or, or something like that. That gets kind of expensive to shoot it. I'm more into 22s and smaller caliber. It doesn't cost as much money for the ammo. Eventually I want to have my own 100 meter pistol range and let you have rifles and shotguns. They don't have limits on how many magazine holds and all that. But if you get a permit that lets you own a gun, you also can carry it concealed. You don't have to go get further permits, you just need one permit and it's good for everything.
Speaker B: I'm kind of an old fashioned guy. I, my handguns are a.357 and a.22 Ruger rifle. Not rifle, but handgun there. And I, my dear rifle is a Ruger number one. I have a single Shot to take it to deer.
Speaker A: Just one.
Speaker B: Because I figure if I can't get him in one, he's gonna run off.
Speaker A: That's probably true. One really. One shot is all you actually really need. And yeah, I have a old old rifle.22, the Mossbergen Son model 147A. And I have a GSG Firefly.22 caliber handgun. And I'm probably going to inherit several other handguns, a shotgun and a rifle, but not an arsenal or anything. And I've always wanted to get into competition shooting but that's hard to do around here because it's just so expensive and I don't like spending a lot of money if I don't have to.
Speaker B: I was smart a long time ago. I acquired a whole lot. I probably have 7,000 rounds of 22 and I have several boxes of.357.
Speaker A: Amber is always a good thing to have. I don't have that much. I have enough that if I needed it for an emergency, I got it.
Speaker B: I have ammunition from all my firearms including My shotguns are 4, 10 and A. I have what I have 3, 412 gauges.
Speaker A: Yeah, my mom has a 380 and I'm trying to get her to go out so she can get familiar with it. She's never fired it, but she's gonna keep that handy. She should practice a little bit with it once in a while. Not really. I want to find a shooting ring to around here that I can go to. You know, just an outside shooting range that's not, not going to cost anything to use.
Speaker B: I have the entire Plymouth National Forest behind me.
Speaker A: Oh, you can, you can still go out to the national forest and, and set up target
Speaker B: as long as you're not near anybody who has been a domicile at a campground. And you pick up your mess when you leave. Yes you can.
Speaker A: Oh yeah. When I lived in Nevada I just had to drive two miles out of town and over by the dump on the dump route. And I remember one time I was out she the cop drives by, doesn't even stop.
Speaker B: Well, that does happen years and years ago. When I was a young boy I had a handgun seized by sheriff in Siskiyou county because I was on a
Speaker A: force of his road.
Speaker B: But I hadn't pulled off enough to the side. I was pulled off on the side and I had the weapon in the vehicle loaded and they, the officers came over, saw the weapon and inspected it and said you were illegal. And I said why? This is forest service land. He said if you had parked another 20ft off the road, you would have been fine. But because within 20ft of the road, this is still a patrolled road and you are illegal. And I took my weapon and forfeited and I had to pay a fine.
Speaker A: Yeah, the rules are in California. They just violate the Constitution.
Speaker B: Well, I think we're talking about 1988 or so.
Speaker A: Yeah, they've been doing that for a long time. Back in the 80s and 90s, I always carried a rifle in my car, but I never had it loaded while the car was in the car. If it went into the car, it was unloaded. I took it out of the car, then I could load it and shoot it.
Speaker B: Okay, Centurion of Firearms, I'll tell you another story. Back around that same time, around the same year, I used. I was a seasonal firefighter for the Siskiyou cdf. And I had come back home, back to San Diego county, and I had a gun rack in the back of my truck, and I had my 10 ruger 1022 in the back of the. In the gun rack. And the officer saw me. He flashed me down, pulled me over, called for backup, and came over there. And he said, is that weapon loaded? I said, you can inspect it. He looked at the weapon and he wasn't loaded. I don't drive around with a loaded weapon. But he said, I'm going to search your entire vehicle rig. He then took my toolbox on the bed, in the. A bed, toolbox. He took it out there and looked at all the bump. I had my socket sets, my tools. He pulled the tray out of it. He saw my ammunition outside the vehicle, totally legal. And he took the tray and dumped it on somebody's lawn. He then pulled everything else out of my truck. He found my buck knife. And could I ask. He asked me, do you have any other weapons in the vehicle? And I said, no. He says, he pulled the knife out and said, you don't call this a weapon? And I said, no, I call that a knife.
Speaker A: Right.
Speaker B: W, E, Z, A, X, N repeater. After he pulled everything out of my vehicle, dumped it all on the ground, he came to me and said, let this be a lesson to you. In this town, do not drive around with a firearm in your gun rack. And I said, yes, sir. And I had to pick up all my crap, put it back away, and I turned, took the gun rack down. I never used it again.
Speaker A: Yeah, he had no right to do that. I used to just lay the rifle on the back seat of the car. You could look in the car and see it if you walk up to the car while I'm in the car. But I'd cover it up when the car was parked. And you know, all my friends knew I always had it in the car, it was always there and I never had a problem. One time when I was in Montana, an officer asked me if I had any firearms. I said yeah, a.22 rifle. And he said can I see it? And I said sure. And he took a look at it. He was just looking for the serial number. Well, it was old enough that that didn't have a serial number. He searched the gun real good for the serial number and he handed the gun back to me and said, well I guess it doesn't have a number. And he didn't search my car or anything. He just handed it back to me and said, have a good day. And that was the end of that.
Speaker B: Yeah, you can see the difference between Montana and California.
Speaker A: Oh yeah. Just because there's a firearm present doesn't give them the right to search. It just doesn't automatically give them the right to search at all. They gotta have another reason, otherwise the search is unconstitutional unless they have probable cause. That a crime, you know, to believe that there's a crime being committed and that's not that easy to get.
Speaker B: Well, I was a young dumb kid and I didn't realize what my rights were.
Speaker A: Oh yeah, I knew what my rights were. Even, you know, even when I was in my twenties I knew what my rights were. And another time a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go with him to go get his rifle out of the pawn shop. He needed money. So he went, took him to the pawn shop and I said sure, it was a really nice day. So we walked over to the pawn shop on and went and got his rifles. And this guy's in a wheelchair but he carried one and I carried the other one. We just walked down the street back to his house. Well, somebody called the cops and the cops stopped us and gave us a bunch of crap, but they really couldn't do anything. After the cop upset, we just continued down the street openly walking, you know, going down the sidewalk with this unloaded rifle like they couldn't do anything about it.
Speaker B: Of course not. You actually are completely within the law. You don't have to because if you conceal that then you're in trouble. If you don't conceal it, you're freely write.
Speaker A: Yeah, the way we were carrying them it was non threatening and all that. We knew our rights and we knew that they can't really do anything. And they don't, chico. No big deal.
Speaker B: But.
Speaker A: But nowadays. They use some unconstitutional law to put us in jail and confiscate the guns. We did it. Now
Speaker B: I understand. I need to go.
Speaker A: You're Jeff.
Speaker B: I didn't catch your sign on this. This your stronger radio.
Speaker A: Hello, Mike. Call sign KB9. My F EL9. Mike Yankee Foxtrot.
Speaker B: I am Ken Ko6 Git. I will be clear. Now back to monitoring. Nice Talking with you, jeff73.
Speaker A: Yeah, it was good talking to you. Have a good night. And do it again sometime. KB9, my sister.

Speaker A: Ko6HLP. KO0X. KO0X, this is KO6HLP. Okay, well, I'm just on the HT right now. Gonna make my way in and whip up a quick cup of instant coffee and then crank up the old base station. How. Reid? Claire? Isabel. Okay, I should. I should pull out my county map, get my parallel rulers and triangles and stuff that I use for navigation, and just find out, you know, what direction you're in so they can know how much mountain is between us. Sometimes
Speaker B: there is a lot of mountain in between us right now. I'll be standing by. I can check in periodically. I'm gonna keep heading up the hill, but I'm in a canyon right now. I'm surprised you can hear me.
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm moving around the house with the ht, so it's gonna sound a little bit wonky, but we're using the repeater. Things will change when we go Simplex.
Speaker B: Got that? Okay, K06HLP. Standing by.
Speaker A: Hey,
Speaker B: Hudson.
Speaker A: QSY over to 146520. Just real quick, you won't hear me, but let me. Let me see if I can hear you from where you are, and then we'll flip back to this one. Okay?
Speaker B: Copy, ko6hlt. Qsy to 146520.
Speaker A: Yeah, and in case I got that wrong, it's the two meter call channel. Okay. What.

Speaker A: Ko0x, this is k06hlp. Ko6HLP.ko0x, are you able to hear anything?
Speaker B: Well, I was trying to unlock the. The handset. I heard something kind of croak. You might have just made a phrase. You want to. You want to run back over there and transmit real quick? Okay, I'll try that one more time. Okay. KO6HLP and KO0X 2SY to 146520.

Speaker A: Ko6hlp, ko0x. Hey, hudson. Now he's really in a canyon. K0X
Speaker B: standing by. This is KO6HLP. Well, the experiment worked exactly as I thought it would.
Speaker C: Tickle it or what were you able to hear?
Speaker B: Okay, I'll stand by my window and you just call me about three times. Okay?
Speaker C: Try that on the way back. I'm just gonna, I'm gonna stand by for now. I'm gonna keep heading, heading up the hill.
Speaker B: Okay, tell you what, I'll just have my base station all ready to go and you know, I'll heck off. I'll listen to it. I'll leave it on 2 meter. I mean, yeah, I'll leave it on the 2 meter call channel. I don't know what I'll do. Well, just keep trying. We, we've got, you know, the telephone, we got a couple of repeaters we can try. Once you get on up there, give me a call on something.
Speaker D: WP6AXM repeater.
Speaker C: If I'm gonna try to call, I'm gonna call on this repeater. I have zero cell service, so I'll have to, if we, we
Speaker A: can
Speaker C: meet up on this repeater and then we can move from there.
Speaker B: Okay, I'll leave it on this repeater on standby. I may be out of the room or out of the, in the backyard, but I got my radio just hanging on the wall right here. Copy that. K06HLP

Speaker B: Yeah, I got your last clear. Just checking in. I'm still heading up. I maybe a couple pits stop and say hi to our friend. I got a little confused with all the radios and different channels and frequencies. Okay, so you're coming in about a two and a half and four and a half. You're readable. There's just a lot of noise. Not. Not as much as sometimes, but you can tell you're behind some dirt. I'm at that ranch. Okay, so you can hit the repeater from the ranch? Yes. Yes I can. All right. KO6HLP. If we don't hear back from you within 30 days, we'll send someone to the Keegan Ranch to look for you. That makes me feel real, real good. Do you want to try 2 meters or do you think it's pointless until you climb up on top of a hill? It's pretty much when I get up into Tony Cornol. We can try it then. You want to try another repeater? From where you're at right now, I could not understand you that time. Repeat again. Again, please. We can try the Walker ridge or System 36. Okay, let's try system. Well, let's try Walker Ridge real quick and see if you can hit it. Okay. On a QSY over to the Walker Ridge rep meters. Copy. USY to the Walker Ridge K0X QSY to the Walker Ridge repeater.

Speaker B: We6a x m
Speaker C: receiver. Station calling for radio check. Try it again. WD6AXM.
Speaker A: Yeah, looking for a radio check. KK6QZQ. You're loud and readable. We've got a little bit of noise up on the hill today. It sounds like there's a power line arcing up there or something. But you're fully readable and fairly decent RF signal into the repeater. Name here is Dave in Sutter. Where are you at? Yuba City as well. I appreciate the radio check. Yeah, okay. Yeah, you're doing good there. It seems that there's something after a rainstorm. Seems like the power line up there somewhere gets a little noisy. Talk with somebody about that up there. But otherwise you're fully readable there. Everything else going good today?
Speaker C: No floods
Speaker A: or anything? No, everything's good. Just pulling out the old search and rescue truck. See if the radio still transmitting and receiving
Speaker C: now. It's doing the job.
Speaker A: All righty. Carry on, sir. Have Good afternoon, WD6AXM.

Six lai.
