GEARS W TX (146.115 MHz) recordings for 2026-01-23
It. There's somebody on the Las Vegas system trying to make it in there, but. Yeah, you're not. You're not quite making it. And 60.
Kk 7 n u n k 7 nun. Sa.
Speaker A: Some sort of, you know, extended care facility that she doesn't want to do. So I don't know. It's a thing as you can
Speaker B: imagine. Yeah, I know. What do you do if those old people just roll us off in the wash and kick the bank in on. If I can.
Speaker A: Okay. Wouldn't go that far, but okay. Got it. All right. Well, yeah, that's about all I got going here, like I said. Still. Still no snow on our radio site. A little bit on Highland Peak, but the other one's nothing. So I got a. We got a problem with one of our radios at high potency. Not one of our. It's not one of our main link repeaters, so it's no big deal. Analog. But I don't know. If we don't get weather this weekend, I may go up there next weekend and do some work. We'll see how it goes.
Speaker B: I haven't seen any prediction for snow in this area or down your way, but I guess it is. They're going to get it back east somewhere. They've got some big storms coming in and they're going to catch it. But we are way under moisture for our area in cedar. They don't have hardly any snow up on that mountain. I guess the sea resorts up there probably have to make snowdy so they can see how. They sure didn't look like there was any mountain snow up there when I was looking up that way.
Speaker A: Yeah, same here with the Lee Canyon. I think they're making snow. But it's warm. Just warm up there. You know, it's like 60, which means it's probably 35 or 40 up there, but. Yeah, I don't know. But it's. It's weird, but. Yeah, right. You said the Midwest back east you're getting hammered. But I think they're talking about flight chance or some tree set this weekend. But very small chance. Like I said, it's warm enough to where there is any snow up there. It'll probably melt off pretty quick.
Speaker B: Take whatever the old guy gives us. But badly needed. And we'll take it if he gives it to us.
Speaker A: Yeah. There you go. All right, Ken, I won't tie it up. Let's go and head to my mom and get home and relax. I got the early morning. Early morning tomorrow again. So maybe I can get out of here a little bit early on a Friday. It'd be nice for a change. So I will be around. Thanks for the shout. N7T.
Speaker B: Take a 7ddi 73.
D.
Los Angeles link up.
Speaker A: This is k6qfr testing.
Speaker B: Well, if you need it. You sound good.
Speaker A: Good. Thank you for the flowers. You never know from day to day if we can bring up this repeater and make it sound presentable. Some days probably it is terrible up here.
Speaker B: Yeah, I understand that. Yeah. Currently you sound fantastic.
Speaker A: Thank you. We're about five and a half miles southeast of Plasterville's airport in Pleasant Valley. Up those sticks. There's nothing up here except ham radio and, and, and wild critters. Okay. Appreciate your help. Have A Good evening. K6QFO73 from Placerville.
Speaker B: Hey, it's another mic system 32 link up. Sorry, Mike, I doubled with you there a little bit. Okay, well, we're about an hour and a half south of Bogota. Bogota, Colombia. Here we have lots of coffee and lots of wild birds. You take care. And Hello, Mike and Mike. N6KN. Hey, troublemaker. K6QFO, what's up? Noisy kids. WP16KV mobile. This got out of work here in San. And I'll bet you there's another Mike on here WFC on his way home.
Speaker A: There's probably another mic AB6CW as well, so. Hello, JKV. Boy, you sound good. Up the next woods here. Made a nice contact though tonight. It was strong. It was very clear. I was 29, talked into Tennessee for the first time. Very cool.
Speaker B: My favorite spot on 10 meters, man. Yeah, I have a blast on 29, 6. So that last solar event didn't mess up our HF communication then. least not too much, right? Yeah, maybe.
Speaker A: Maybe I just. Everything is hit and miss. Sometimes 10's okay, sometimes 15, 20, so on and so forth. It's really, really nice to work HF up here in the God's. God's country. There's absolutely no RFI of any kind. There's no solar controllers, LED lights, so on and so forth. I tell the guys in the South Bay, I know they throw rocks at me, they get really upset, but it's just facts of life that it's so quiet up here. RFI wise on hf. I tell them, hey guys, it's so quiet up here. I have to reach behind the radio and make sure the antenna is plugged in. I can't hear weak signals. Wow, what a. What a great pleasure. Now, when I. I had HF capabilities in Campbell, my main home residence is at. It's S8 S6 or you know, 24. Sibling noise, just noise. It's all about RFI. Don't you. And this is a noisy kid. K6K from Fosterville. About ready to go up and get some grub. I'm in my three car garage here where the ham shack's located. And it's been a beautiful nice few days up here. Sunny is a little cold. Not, not, not, not too bad. And give me a chance to pick up all the dangerous stuff like dowood pine cones and all that fun stuff. Homeowner job security K6QFO.
Speaker B: Yep, roger that. Let me change power here so I don't blow a fuse. There we go. Down to low power. Yeah, yeah, my pleasure. Place I kind of lost interest in HF because of the damn noise. 40 meters runs around an S9 last night. Listening around on 75, man, I can only hear the real strong stations and usually at nighttime you can drop onto one of the nets and interact. But when you can't hear anything, screw it, it's not worth it. But 10 meters is quiet. It's not so bad. I think it's about an S1 or S2 noise level. But every now and then there's something in the neighborhood that pushes it up around an S8. I haven't, I've yet to chase it down because you know when I'm in the mood to turn the radio on, usually it's quiet but I gotta catch it with the noise and then go looking for it. But yep, I remember Frankie. Bth man, Come on. 19 man, that might work better for you.
Speaker A: I'm on 16 right now. So on this one, yeah, but you
Speaker B: got to be on link.
Speaker A: All right, Professor. I did run across a ham. Just think it was last year. He had HF problems. There's something new that popped up in the air. He hunted down. It was a solar controller generating noise. And he went to go knock on their door and says hey, get a hold of the contractor. And I guess they have to make the noise go away. Clover installed the equipment.
Speaker C: They did.
Speaker A: His problem went away. So very cool. So in anyone has solar controller generating noise, contact the party and they'll get a hold of their people and put this equipment in and swap it out. Put something in. So that was very cool. Eliminated big problem like you have, Mike.
Speaker B: Yeah. I only have two neighbors within a stone's throw that have panels. So hopefully you don't have to look too far.
Speaker A: Oh, by the way, this just happened probably about five years ago. I've got, you know, I got about 114 antennas on top of my roof. Very clean, very neat, very sanitary. I had a neighbor come walk down. Oh geez, where was I was Watching TV and they wanted to know if I was on the air. I said why? He says I'm getting people in. Somebody's causing interference. My TV and my stereo and all that stuff. I said really? He said okay, there's gotta be somebody really close by. Let's go for a walk. We did. Walked down about oh about seven 8 ounce houses down the street and I looked at his backyard and looked at the neighbors behind him. See that antenna right there? That's your problem. It's a CB antenna and I'll bet you they're running a classic C amplifier. So go knock on his door. That's your problem. Source. And he thanked me.
Speaker B: Yeah, way back in the day when the FCC was actually active. Yeah Bill King used to get a hold of me or you know, the consumer complaints. So yeah, so myself and a couple other guys, we'd take care of this stuff, get it resolved and usually on the receivers in back then but matter of fact I don't ever recall it being the hams problem.
Speaker A: So. Good stuff.
Speaker B: Yes indeed. Hey WFC, you find the the link yet?
Speaker C: This one.
Speaker A: KV6 WSC mobile.
Speaker B: Nobody answers so it makes you wonder. Yep, you found it.
Speaker C: You blew a fuse.
Speaker B: I put it on low power here so I can use low power all the way to the top of the hill Pacifica and then I can switch over to 32 and still stay on low power and not blow a fuse. Problem solved.
Speaker A: Yeah, I need to look at my truck and see what the power port, what the amperage is capable of handling. I've got 65 watt mobile radio and on high power when I need it it's hold the circuit breaker or the fuse alt A. But I don't want to pop that dude and have to go through that hassle trying to find out where it is, what it is and what size Lodge refused is it and all that nonsense. So so far I've been okay. K6QF.
Speaker B: Go ahead Mike, your turn. WSC type
Speaker C: Hello Mike. UFO that is.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker C: Have you ever stumbled across another ham up there in Placerville, K6WIS Paul?
Speaker A: Nope, haven't run across yet. Rascal. We're pretty active with a lot of response. Peter's up here, Simplex, so on and so forth. That call has not run across my desk.
Speaker C: Okay, well I'll look him up on qz. He's pretty active on the bozo nets so maybe you could catch up with him sometime. He's a neighbor, I'm sure.
Speaker A: Okay. Do you have this complete call?
Speaker C: Please call K6WIS Kilo, Six Whiskey, India Sugar.
Speaker A: Yeah, that call is familiar. K6WIS is familiar. I've. Okay, yep, we must have ran across him or hurt him up here numerous times.
Speaker C: Nice setup. It's all on qa. Look at see what changes he's made every now and again.
Speaker A: How often does he update his station? Because I had my whole console here. I got a 4x8 console up here. You can look in QRZ the console I built before I put all brought it into the ham shack. Anyway, I had model band, all this old ICOM equipment, you know the HF gear, the 222 meter, 440. They all just took up so much room and my God, now with my Pro3 and my 9700 I've eliminated about nine radios up here. Pretty crazy.
Speaker C: I just need an IC905 as well.
Speaker A: Well, you know what? I have also a ham shack in the box. Brand spanking new. I was going to use it for a to go box. Haven't yet. I have a Yaesu991A looking for a home. I even have the brand new tuner for any Yaesu HF radio. You need extra tuner capable up to 200 watts. It's a plug and play piece of equipment. It's like ldg. It's one of the higher end auto tuners.
Speaker C: I'll ask around for you but I have a991Amyself and yeah, don't need any of that. Actually I'm running a 7100 with the LT LDZ tuners for doing HF or 10 meter stuff and 6 meters from the car. So it's a lot better than. A little bit better than the 8900 DC that I have but only because I can do single sideband. But I miss doing duplex and that
Speaker B: sort of thing run, you know, working satellites and whatnot.
Speaker A: Yeah, I have a, I have this. I have an LDG. What is it? It's an AT500 Pro 2, something like that automatic tuner. It was a lot of money. I paid almost 400 bucks for this thing. It's good for 600 watts. But you know something I just discovered tonight, working on 29.6. No, I think that's. Yeah, 29.6. The when I was talking to. Gosh, Mr. Pickle. Gosh I forget his first name. But anyway I was talking to him without the tuner on and I turned the tuner on. I forgot it was on because it's working HS up.
Speaker B: He said Mike, what happened?
Speaker A: You were like S5, now you're 20 over 9. I just, I said, I just turned, just turned the tuner on. Like it doesn't have a bypass in it if you turn it off.
Speaker C: Operator here, right?
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker C: Derek, you're thinking about right?
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker A: Just don't get old. You have like one bod in memory recall sometimes. Yep. Derek, my hero. Yeah, well, by the way, I don't know if I told you guys. I told him I was on 52 0. They relayed for me. I was able to. I was able to make contact to. To a Tennessee station on FM. 10 meters. I thought that was kind of a nice touch.
Speaker C: I wonder if six is open. Yeah, I can remember when I just. I just got my General and I had my SD1000amplifier. I was playing around on FM running a kilowatt, right? And the guy said, I figured he's in like Michigan or something like that. It sounds like you're next door.
Speaker B: Where are you at? In.
Speaker C: I told him California. I blew him away.
Speaker A: That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. There's sometimes I'm on HF putting around and, and here, here, here, here, somebody. And I don't know. I think there's two problems. I think there's two issues. One, I'm not part of the good old. There's some clicks out there on HF or they're transiting further than they can hear. There'll be like F10 here and they can't hear me. So I think they're just transferring further than they can hear with putting these big amplifiers on board.
Speaker C: Alligator station. Yeah. I pride myself on receive. So if I can hear the small guys and I try and work them all the time, then I feel pretty
Speaker B: good,
Speaker A: You know, for contesting or just as a pile up or whatever the case may be on hf. It's kind of trick I pull when the guy does the work split. He gestation P comes on and qrz. And here's all this Hedrokine, right? Coming in. I wait a couple of seconds and then I key up QRP or Noisy Kid, that little key word they can pull out. All that noise at the end that they call on me. It works. K6, QFO, Placerville.
Speaker B: I mean there are hams out there
Speaker C: that pride themselves on the receipt, especially in the eme, you know, area. But anyways, I gotta jump out.
Speaker B: Great hearing you, Mike.
Speaker C: I hope you have a. The other Mike. I hope you have a safe and quick ride home. I gotta go into the store here. So have A Good evening, gentlemen. 73, KB6WC.
Speaker A: Not so mobile. All right, boss, have a good evening. Good to hear from you. And winter field day this weekend, K6QFO73. Have a great evening.
Speaker B: Right. Probably catch you tomorrow. I gotta get on the phone and give the wifey a ring, so. And noisy kids. Talk to you later, bud. 73, don't. WP6JKV mobile 101, northbound duckling traffic.
Speaker A: Okay, Mr. JKV, good. Pleasure coming aboard saying hello. Yeah, we'll chat with later. I'm gonna jump into the Polaris and cruise up to the house and see what's for dinner. Before I could show the door again. Mickey, these get tiresome after a while.
Speaker B: All right, have a couple.
Speaker A: Good evening, 73. All K6, Cuba, plaster. Vote now.
Speaker B: Clear. Hey, there's a Rubicon Jeep just went by me. License plate KN6 something, something, something. I'm coming up on him now.
Speaker A: Let's see.
Speaker B: KN6, Bravo, Foxtrot, Whiskey, KN6BFW. What if he's listening over here? I don't see any antennas. So dope, no antennas.
Speaker A: Oh, small world, huh? All right, talk to you later, K6.
To see you.
Speaker A: From n6mbt. Still there, mike?
Speaker B: Yeah, what's up, dude? N6mbt.
Speaker C: Wb6jk.
Speaker A: How? Coffee portable by the convention center.
Speaker B: You'll be full quieting, man. Sounds good. Like you're right here.
Speaker A: All right, we're going to go find something to eat and then go back and check out a couple of shows that they're doing here too. So I think, you know, lots of expensive toys.
Speaker B: So is that work related you're a trip down there or is it more like recreational and fun stuff?
Speaker A: It's not the day job, it's the other job. It's. What's it called? NAMM N A M M. So it's mostly all just music, you know, encompasses all kinds of the music industry and stuff. All kinds of pro audio, lighting, instruments, av, you know, under one roof and stuff.
Speaker B: Oh, dude, that's a must attend. That's fun stuff. Absolutely. Yeah. I was. Me and a co worker actually were going to go to LA for some
Speaker C: EHS and HAZMAT training, but the company
Speaker B: at the last minute decided, no, we'll put that off for a while. See if we can find something closer maybe, you know, in the Bay Area. So. Yeah, well, good luck with that.
Speaker A: Or do the virtual thing now that
Speaker B: everybody wants to do.
Speaker A: So I've got three years worth of little Mini Annie's or whatever they call them, you know, for doing cpr. Cheap little things they send. You started with COVID I guess so. Anyway.
Speaker C: All right.
Speaker A: I thought I'd just give it a try and see if it's working, so. Sounds like it is. That's a good thing.
Speaker B: Yeah. Figured we'd, you know, tie up the circuit and, you know, give it a run and. Well, you're sounding great at this end and I assume we're doing the same down yonder.
Speaker C: Sounds good here.
Speaker A: Well, I guess you landed. Find out, right?
Speaker C: Yep. I'm. I'm back home. I tried to turn on the radio and heard you guys talking.
Speaker A: Alrighty then. Well, I'll be listening on and off and check in periodically and continue to monitor. So I think, you know. And I take it it was a uneventful flight?
Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. For the most part I just hung around and had lunch there and caught up with a cup of coffee and flight went good.
Speaker B: Just sneak an HT on the plate just to see how far you can jump the repeater. Back in the day I used to bring up my Vomer box and just to be starting to, you know, descend into LAs.
Speaker A: Those are fun times.
Speaker C: I did have a radio with Me, security. I. Me to turn it on, you know, on the ground. But I didn't try it up in the air. I had a middle seat, so there was an elbow to the left and the right of me. So I didn't want to try and get away with it.
Speaker A: But I'm not shy.
Speaker B: If I had a middle seat, I asked, hey, man, let me sit next to the window so I can play with my radio. And that's people.
Speaker C: Sure. You know, what's that? Yeah, they think you're one of those TSA guys that they, you know, they put on the flight just to. Just to have one or two security guys on there. So I. I don't say anything. I just let them think that if they see the radio.
Speaker B: Well, there you go. Yeah. This is when I used to fly quite regularly back in the Pagemark days, man, he used to run all over the place. Pacific Northwest and all that fun stuff. Always had a radio pressed up against a window, you know.
Speaker C: Yeah. So I think it's Tom. You're back at the hotel.
Speaker A: Now. I'm near the convention center, but we're going to go into a restaurant and get some dinner. So I'm going to jump off here. So we'll check in later at some point. See you guys later. N6M VT handheld in Anaheim.
Speaker C: Yeah, I'd say it was worth the trip. The audio is really good. Yeah. I'm starting to think about dinner at this end of town pretty quick. Yeah.
Speaker B: Switched over to 32, and I would assume the audio probably pretty close to the same. I was on 19 with you.
Speaker C: Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah, pretty much the same. I guess Tom turned the volume down and walked away. Take care of dinner business. Yeah, sounds about the same.
Speaker B: I notice on 32, there's zero paid pause either way. So that's the benefit that I have with this one compared to some of the others.
Speaker C: Interesting kind of comes through, that kind of thing. So I'm not sure what the deal is, but,
Speaker B: Yes, it is. And I think the antenna's got issues. It's fluttery here on 101, and it used to be slammed down to the rivets, so. Yeah.
Speaker C: Yeah, I was kind of wondering about that. I was wondering about system 2 also.
Speaker A: Good player.
Speaker C: It doesn't hit me as strong as it usually does, but still kind of thinking that one over. All right. Anyway, gonna hop out of here, go pick up something for dinner. Talk to you later.
Speaker A: So I can go confirm that for
Speaker B: you quick like, as it's usually pretty good. Down 101 here, let me jump over there. Oh, there's on system two. It's stronger than 32. So there you go. Test, test, test. One, two, three. WD6JKV on numeros. But I noticed this one has
Speaker C: has
Speaker B: problems into back as their pave cars.
Speaker A: Tickles it.
Speaker C: Yeah, just a little bit. I'm right across the bay from it, from two, and it just seems to me it's not hitting me as strong over here as it was on the HT and the out. I could be dream that up, but I don't know. Next time we get up there, we'll do an SWR and a wattage check and that kind of stuff just to make sure.
Speaker B: I gotta do that on 32 and sweep the line. So I might do that Saturday
Speaker C: or. We'll see.
Speaker B: But yeah, I haven't been up there over a year and a half.
Speaker C: I want to say that the timekeeper on the controller at 32 is frozen in one spot last I checked it, which is months ago. We use it for a couple of things, but not too much. It's not a big showstopper and I'm not sure why it would do that, But what else?
Speaker B: So how do you connect to the controller and verify that? Or you just hit the buttons on the TCMF and just do a time set?
Speaker C: Is that what you did?
