Well, it sounds good. Yeah. I'm gonna do some audio testing down in bottom of the hill, make sure the audio quality is good, and we should be set. And you can see it over the IP address, correct? Yeah, yeah, that's all good. So supermom works, and then cockpit dashboard stuff works. And I dialed in, so that that part works, too, so we should be good to go. Awesome. Well, that's a good day's work. And we got some cameras up and an SDR receiver.

Jim, can we patch in some audio, wind Link or something that has some traffic on it just so we can listen to the audio as we're coming down the hill?

Speaker A: You're talking about the interference that was there. That was because somebody logged in remotely. And then after three minutes they kicked them out.
Speaker B: I didn't know because it sounded like it was in a closed loop.
Speaker A: Now, somebody logged into it. We heard them fire up the All Star and then it. It did the three minute timer and kicked them out.
Speaker B: They're not active. It kicks them out after three minutes.
Speaker A: Yeah, if there's three minutes of solid audio.
Speaker B: Okay.
Speaker A: Yeah, that makes sense. Well, that's good.
Speaker B: Yeah, I've been able to log into it with both my note at home and my phone.
Speaker A: Yeah, I think Jim logged into it that way as well. So that's great. We just have to keep monitoring it. Somebody messes around with it, we'll lock her down.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, sounds pretty good. Sounds like everything went real smooth, huh? Are you home?

We were hoping that we got some audio going through it as we were coming down 162 so we could hear over there by the racetrack, but fairly quiet out there. There's just no activity on 2 meter anymore. Sounds that way huh? Crazy. That's why we have the All Star nodes to get the coffee net going in. I had mine scanning earlier and there's just no activity. I was a little bit on sutter buttes, but other than that the activity levels are just almost none.

Speaker A: Ke6jds ke6jds w6lnd how are you, mark? Hanging in there, Jeremy. Just kind of busy running around here with my head cut off. I'll show you. New cap the other day and the caps are so small that I gotta cow. I gotta do that twice a day. Go ahead. Okay.
Speaker B: All sounds about normal. At least the weather's nice.
Speaker A: The weather is beautiful. So a little chilly in the morning and not too hot in the afternoon, so can't really complain. But everything's going pretty good here. What have you been up to?
Speaker B: Just hanging out. Been working in the. Gary went up and installed the new repeater today.
Speaker A: Well, good. Yeah, I. I kind of wanted to go and then I got caught up with all this stuff around here and a butcher chicken too. So. Yeah, just busy. Too busy. Why? How does the guy get so busy?
Speaker B: Because you. You got too many things going on. So retirement. You're busier than when you are working.
Speaker A: Well, yeah, if I could have worked some fishing in. In the middle of the day. But that didn't happen either.
Speaker B: Not with cows and cows having calves and killing chickens.
Speaker A: Well, let alone dishes. Well, it sounds good. Sounds nice and clear and it's got some little tones and stuff. Give you a little difference, which is good.
Speaker B: So that's the All Star courtesy tone. All Star is the repeater controller on this project.
Speaker A: Yeah.
Speaker C: What.
Speaker A: So which I don't know anything about. So is it broadcasting statewide or is it just still local?
Speaker B: It's local, but now it's able to be connected with other repeaters via the Internet.
Speaker A: Very interesting though that would be handy for different things.
Speaker B: Well, 7:30 in the morning, it's going to connect to W6ek out of Auburn and it will have traffic on it for two and a half to three hours solid.
Speaker A: Well, maybe get some activity going. At least people can listen to something besides, you know, just nothing.
Speaker B: So it'll have two and a half to three hours of a morning net. They call it the coffee break net. So I encourage you to listen in and then I think Gary's going to connect it to some other things as well as time moves on.
Speaker A: All right, then if you have a comment or something like that, you just kind of break in.
Speaker B: So you should be able to join in on their net. Just call in. However their protocol is, you should be able to join in and do a check in if you so desire.

Speaker B: I think the goal is to try and get it a little busy.

Speaker B: I was telling Gary or somebody earlier I was scanning two meters and there was no traffic anywhere. Mass scanning repeaters from like. Well, I took the Redding one out. It's got a lot of activity, but scanning everything here in the area with the exception being Sutter Buttes, having some activity.
Speaker A: Okay, well, I thought that I had Sutter beach in here. Maybe I don't in the program, but I haven't heard anybody on for quite a while.
Speaker B: I think there's a net going on on Sutter Buttes right now and then there's a simplex net in 20 minutes on five. Okay.
Speaker A: Really good. Yeah, you know, I don't know. Early to bed, early to rise.
Speaker B: Well, it doesn't want you to do much radio though.
Speaker A: Well, when I wake up for my drink of water at 2 in the morning, I guess I could get on there and wake everybody up.

Speaker C: Yes, I know. In fact, I can hear Red Mountain at about an S5 S6 right now on the 9700. And then of course I'm coming in ASL. But yeah, really sounding quite nice. Connected from the controller in Auburn briefly, just to see how it came through. It didn't come through the repeater network, but I think it's going to be a nice, nice merge of the two and help you guys get some more activity up there.
Speaker B: I can tell you we need it. The repeaters around here are completely dead.
Speaker C: Well, it'll be fun and it'll give people something to listen to and perhaps give A net to check into. Yeah, it's a fun net too. It's pretty light hearted. And it's not all about radio too. So you know, we could talk about working, working the land too there my friend. I gotta remind everybody. Hey, don't forget man, we got those, those working guys up north. Those real hard working guys.
Speaker B: Yeah, well today I was a mechanic. Right. That's the nice thing about what I do. You wear a different hat.
Speaker C: Absolutely. Well, I heard you out here. I don't normally get to hear. Well unless you're on 36 local on this repeater I don't ever hear you very clear. And I've got one of these new shark M1kes. I don't know if you've heard about these, the shark mic and pretty clever, a lot of fun. But talking into one of those radio less directly into asl. So awesome. Man, things are sounding good down here. Excited to hear and or rather to see if anybody checks in from up there tomorrow.
Speaker B: Well, let's hope so. I guess I'm have to take my, take my little HT with me tomorrow so I can check in if I can give it a try. The repeaters at 50 watts at like 3100ft or 3400ft. So with the antenna I think it's like about 100 watts.
Speaker C: Well it sounds the best that it's. That it sounded down here in a really long time. In fact, I'm going to switch over to RF for a second. I just want to see how 10 watts makes it back. There might be an echo because I've got the mic on right now so I'll hear how it sounds through all star. Stand by, WBwing. All right, 10 watts. 10 watts RF. Oh yeah, it's damn good.
Speaker B: Your audio is a lot hotter via the All Star. So it sounded like maybe you're a bit over modulated.
Speaker C: You're saying on RF I was over modulated? It's quite possible that I am right now. I will take a look.
Speaker B: No, I'm on your allstar.
Speaker C: Oh that wouldn't surprise me. When you see what I was talking into, you'll. It'll make sense. But yeah, this is 10 watts. I'm going to bring it down a little bit less and just check his receiver set sensitivity. This is five watts. I'm listening. I got a little. I know there's an echo in the background.

Speaker A: On the programming of that repeater are you using? Which pin are you using for receive? Is it the CTCSS pin or combination of both?
Speaker B: Great question. I have to look back to the paperwork that I got, but we can change it in the setting and on the repeater.
Speaker A: I'm actually going to change a setting here real quick, and then I'll have you test to make sure, because right now the repeater is looking for COR and pl. But if I go and I look at the states, the PL pins always got something on it, even when it's idle. So I'm wondering if that's what caused that loop, because I did see an error message in the logs that said the tone verify got turned off right about when the noise started. So I'm tracking that one down.
Speaker B: Okay. Yeah. Way back in the day, I followed the instructions. The gentleman built the the cable for it. Pin goes into the back, but they can be electronically changed in the programming of the repeater.
Speaker C: All right, see if you can
Speaker A: key up and I can hear you.

Speaker C: Okay. I heard you fine.
Speaker B: Well, let's see if that fixes it.

Speaker C: have the ability to change your PL on the fly, or are you using a Moto?
Speaker A: In about 20 minutes, I'll be able to. We're still on I5, head northbound. We're probably 10 minutes from Orland, and I gotta drop everybody off.
Speaker C: All right. I'm just curious if you change your PL and key up on a different one, if it still here, if it still hears you, but that'll be the ultimate test. But we'll let it run this way for a while and see how it goes.
Speaker B: I have
Speaker A: the PL turned on in the repeater settings for transmit side. I'm sorry, for input side, receive side. I can't change that on the fly. Does the. The node doesn't control that as well, does it?
Speaker C: So actually, the node has the ability to decode and encode Pl for you, which is kind of a neat feature. So it has that ability, but we're obviously not using it. So if it's hard coded in the repeater, then we should be fine.
Speaker A: Yeah, it's hard coded in the repeater.

Speaker A: So far, so good. The noise. Does the pin still say that it has a PL tone on. On it?
Speaker B: No, not anymore because I. I turned that input off. My guess is just it was unused and it thought that it was present, so. Yeah, no, it's not. Once you turn it off, it doesn't care about it anymore.
Speaker A: Perfect. Yeah, it was weird. We were trying to figure out what it was first. I thought somebody had hopped on to All Star on it and was just in a loop or something, but now that makes sense.
Speaker B: Yeah, we'll go over Superman. That's what I had up on my screen that showed me that it was local. So yeah, we'll go over Supermon and how to
Speaker A: control
Speaker B: all that.
Speaker A: All right, sounds great. The repeater does sound good here. A little bit louder. Of course, we're using a little bit more watt than what was up there before, a little bit different circuitry.

Speaker A: Sorry, my wife on a meeting. So I missed what you said.
Speaker B: The repeater sounds hotter, but we have obviously a new repeater there and a duplexer. So everything's changed out. So a little fresher. It's got about 30 watts more as well.
Speaker A: I thought I was listening to Jeremy talking to somebody and he was bringing it up on what, 250 milliwatts from Rockland, which. It's not bad at all.
Speaker B: That's great. Did a sweep of the antenna. It looked okay too. A little bit higher than I want, but work on that when it's warm outside.
Speaker A: And as far as audio goes, you're happy with the levels we got that.
Speaker B: So far, so good. The only part that I would need to change is the All Star is hot. So I know it's good to listen to the audio coming through the RF side of it. And those are changes that I can make inside the repeater itself.
Speaker A: Well, and we can make those changes through the. Through the node. So we have that ability to, you know, change the receiver setting or receiver levels and the transmitter levels too. So we can play with those.
Speaker B: All right, great. So we, we have some other toys up there that I'll call you and walk you through how to get into it so we can access the repeater itself. We have a del core up there plugged into it with a USB cord so we can get inside it, do any type of programming we need to do.
Speaker A: Oh, perfect. That's the way to do it.
Speaker B: Less trips to the mountaintop,
Speaker A: Right? Yeah. I was hoping that noise wasn't the beginning of an issue that would have to require another visit.
Speaker B: Well, we, we made sure everything was grounded properly today. So we spent about 30 minutes putting on ground lugs. Then we made sure everything had ferrite cables over the top of it. And we bought non Chinese cables through the ones the way that came with the Raspberry PI. It's funny, that stuff is such junk. So all the hums and buzzes that I heard in my house have gone away now that we've replaced all the cables out.
Speaker A: Yeah. And your signal coming back this way is pretty clean. Speaking of towers and grounding and whatnot,

Speaker A: had a meeting with your guy Ryan today.
Speaker B: Yeah, he's a great guy. We spend a lot of time together. Did he give. Just getting you a quote. Is that what he's doing?
Speaker A: Yeah, guys, they're. They're local sack guys are coming down on Tuesday to come do a site visit and kind of walk through where we want it and how we want cable. Cable being ran. I, I shot him an email yesterday and he was like, yeah, Gary gave me a heads up you were calling, so appreciate it. So thanks again for that reference.
Speaker B: Nah, he's the only guy I trust. Everything's done right. So he's done a bunch of work for us. He stacked that monopole we have really good with hard line, making sure it's terminated and sweeps everything, gives you the reports on it. How high are you going?
Speaker A: We're only going 60ft, You know, now we don't. We used to have a store and forward repeater that was. That took care of our paging in district, but our county made some simulcast upgrades to their VHF system, so that requirement went away. So we just went a little lower and the only antenna we have on it is the one for our station alerting, so it's perfect. But yeah, 60ft is what we're going with.
Speaker B: Okay, well how much gear are you going to hang on at? Just one antenna?
Speaker A: Yeah, we're gonna do a pair of VHF sticks and then I have an 800 MiG Yagi and I think that's about all we're putting on it.
Speaker B: Okay. You don't need anything big then you get away with maybe a heavy duty. Ron,
Speaker A: I think we're either getting quoted of round 45 or 65. So, yeah, it's nothing crazy anymore. Again, that big requirement of that storm Ford repeater, you know, once that went away, then our, a lot of our hype requirements went away too, because I think at one point we're looking at going 80ft, so. But yeah, it's exciting. I'm interested to chat with those guys on Tuesday.
Speaker B: Well, if you can afford it, go with the 65. That way you can hang more stuff on it later.
Speaker A: Absolutely. Yeah, I can see them wanting to sell some space later down the road on it. Hell, I might even, I might even buy space on it, put something on there.
Speaker B: I think cell phones want to be
Speaker A: up about 100ft though.
Speaker B: Right. So you might have to go a pinch higher.
Speaker A: Well, we were actually approached at one time. I think it was four or five years ago, I think it was. T Mobile approached us to put a tower at one of our other stations and the administration thought that they could squeeze a little more money out of them, and so they basically told us to take a hike.
Speaker B: Were they going to build it there on site?
Speaker A: I believe so. I think that, that they were just leasing the space from us, you know, the, the empty land. And they came to us with a dollar amount and they went back and said, well, no, I think, you know, we want more than this. And yeah, they took off. But they were going to do it all.
Speaker B: Yeah, that was a mistake because you could have hung gear on there and negotiated that and they would have let that happen. No problem there. And then you would had fiber to
Speaker A: it and then you would have had
Speaker B: a generator back up.
Speaker A: Right. And this station is only less than a mile from my house. It would have been perfect.
Speaker B: So, yeah, missed opportunity there.
Speaker A: At another one of our stations, we've got three. So we got our one primary and then two volunteer response stations. At our other volunteer response station, we had, we have a guy who runs a wireless ISP who set a pole. It's a wooden pole, probably about the same height as your guys. Monopole, maybe a little shorter. So we have an agreement with that
Speaker B: guy
Speaker A: and he just does all the work. And so that's a good opportunity there. But I don't know how viable it is now that Wilton has fiber.
Speaker B: Man, you guys are lucky. We don't have fiber yet.
Speaker A: But getting close. So frontier, I guess. Now Verizon, I don't know if it was part of an agreement or whatnot, but they, they dropped it here quick. Within a year, they lit up Wilton. So I've got, I've got two gig fiber here at the house now, which is awesome. Unless a tweaker decides to climb a pole and cut a copper line, which is right next to the fiber line and knock you out for 23 hours.
Speaker B: What is the cost for that per month?
Speaker A: W6grc, K6JW. And I think I'm paying 79.99. These are 69.99 or 79.99, but it's not bad.
Speaker B: Now that's huge. We're paying that for wireless Internet service providers providing 200 up and 50 down.
Speaker A: Well, I'll tell you, my neighbor's putting his house up for sale and it's got fiber. So, you know, you could, you could come move south.
Speaker B: I think I'm like everybody else. If I move, it's going to be out of the state. The tax ratio and the homeless ratio and the drug ratio is getting too high.
Speaker A: Agreed. I think that's kind of the boat
Speaker B: we're in as well.
Speaker A: Yeah. My neighbor bought a house in South Dakota and super excited. They've been here for 25 years, I think he said. And he's getting out for the same exact reason. So I'm hoping I get at least decent neighbors.
Speaker B: We have to have a major political Correction in our state for something to change. Hopefully that happens here. I'd like to see California save itself the best weather out of any state ever, especially through the valley. Here we get the four seasons and our winter's not too cold. Cold, but boy, taxation's crazy.
Speaker A: Our fuel is crazy.
Speaker B: I don't know if you saw the news today about Valero closing down at Benicia early.
Speaker A: Oh, no kidding. I knew they were, but wow, they must have pushed that up earlier. And then you've also got the Anheuser Busch factory in Fairfield.
Speaker B: The right foot.
Speaker A: They're closing too. Forget how many people are employed there, but that's huge for that area. But yeah, my dad retired from PG&E and he moved out quickly. And so he likes to. He likes to call me and rub it in my face that his gas is way cheaper than mine, his electric's way cheaper than mine. And yeah. So one of these days,
Speaker B: I have a question for you. So while we were talking, or while you were talking, the repeater did its automated on the hour update. Is there a way to have it to where it won't do that if somebody's talking until the ear is clear, or is that not a setting we can do?
Speaker A: I'm. I'm glad you actually mentioned that to me because I was curious what would happen. So did it wipe me out completely and play the audio over me or did I mute. Did my volume lower and then it played louder than me?
Speaker B: No, your audio was fully legible and it muted itself back and it was barely hearable, but it still doubled.
Speaker A: Okay, perfect. Yes, there is a setting.
Speaker B: Actually, there's.
Speaker A: In my script, there's probably a way that I can. I just have to go look up how to do it, but I can probe. I can probe the CoS and PTT states and then if either one is active, I can basically tell it to sleep and wait for clear air before it plays it. So. Perfect. So, yeah, I'll go check that and then implement that.
Speaker B: You are the best IT guy that I know this side of India.
Speaker A: So now the next thing is to figure out the auto patch thing.
Speaker B: Well, maybe now we can get it because I think you have a cleaner access to it, but we'll have to play with it and see.

Speaker B: Well, better. I've been kind of under the weather the last couple days. I took some time off from work, got sick on Tuesday, had to have a tooth extraction on Wednesday, and still recovering from both.
Speaker C: Oh, that's terrible. I'm so sorry. Shouldn't have to deal with all of those things. Well, get better. And I hope that that toothache goes away.
Speaker B: Oh, the toothache went away. They got rid of the tooth entirely. Now I'm just waiting for the sutures to heal and so I can. So about June or July, I get to go back in for the implant.
Speaker C: Ah, I wouldn't say what fun, but. Well, it's good that the toothache went away. I'm sure that your tongue is busy checking out those sutures when every time you don't think about it.
Speaker B: Oh yeah, it's an absolute field day in there. It keeps going. Hey, what is this? Yeah, no, I broke a tooth and they had to remove it. It just fractured and so eating the stupid things, I don't know. But yeah, I'm looking forward to the breakfast, I think tomorrow. And yeah, hopefully I can eat some solid food.
Speaker C: Ah, very good. Well, I. I don't know. I think until the sutures get healed, if it probably should stick to scrambled eggs and yogurt and things like that. Soup.
Speaker B: Been eating a lot of soup. Mac and cheese. Really soft stuff. Yeah. Actually, you know, the reality of it is the extraction took about an hour completely in and out of the chair. And I had, you know, very little other than sight tenderness. It's been pretty manageable.

But, yeah, that's all I got going on today. I think I'm going to rest after that. Finally, after a week and a half, finally got the kitchen started. Decided I'm not going to go out of retirement and start doing window installing again like I did in my twenties, so had to drop five grand for a contract for a new garden window for the wife and replace some dry rot and siding that I'm not going to do. I'm just going to sit back and watch this time. So anyways, that's all I got going on. How are you doing, Fedora?
Speaker A: I'm doing just great. We're both kind of laughing at what you had to say. Yes. With age comes wisdom and the knowledge that we don't need to be up on a ladder and doing things like that. We can hire young people to do that.
Speaker D: Yeah. You know, I guess when we do a kitchen, you gotta. If you got a issue with your window and countertop leveling, you need to go ahead and start with that window first and then they'll come in. They're coming in Wednesday to measure the countertops and come in and measure the window, get the fine tooth measurement and then place the order. And I gotta wait six weeks and then the wife's got to figure out what floor she wants. We already figured out we're going to get. There's an appliance set at Home Depot. It comes with a dishwasher, oven, fridge, microwave, and that's a lot of money too. But I told her, I go, I think I trust ge. Before whirlpool, I always lived on. General Electric has always been a good item all the way across the board all these years. So I told her, let's go ahead
Speaker A: and get the George. Very good, very good. Well, that sounds like an exciting, long, drawn out process. You do have our sympathies. We've done that. But it's nice. You know, I have to admit our last kitchen remodel was very easy. We took off in the motorhome, told the contractor know we want this and this and this. Go for it. And he did. And so that was very nice. So that's definitely the way to do it. But good luck with all of that.
Speaker D: Yeah. The word on the street is from all the elders above me have said that when you retire, the first three years is basically not retirement. You're basically doing everything for your wife, fixing all the problems that you didn't do all the years you were working. So that's, that's what I'm stuck with next. But more importantly right now my mom Ani coming from Newton, Kansas is actually flying as we speak and she will be coming to Sacramento today. So I look forward to having her around and having her on the radio probably next week.

Speaker G: Well, hi. I know it's been a while. Things have been sort of crazy. I've been. Well, we'll get into all the specifics, but as you know, I do a lot of work with Blind Information Technology Solutions, as it is now called. And this is sort of like our tax season for certification membership certification. But they chose this time to do upgrades to the system, which eliminated the ability to do exports. It was, and continues at somewhat lesser of a level to be a nightmare. But I just submitted a report for the weekly bulletin that we put out. Want to say hi to W3LS? I had never heard her voice before, but like me, she used to live in the D.C. area, although she was in Maryland, I was in Virginia. So we were on opposite sides of different parts of suburban D.C. if you will. First time I ever heard her voice. Anyway, great to see her here. It's like nothing and everything is going on. And if this works and it appears to be working, I will have put some anxiety to rest because I heard that version 2.2.26 iOS 26.2.1 had problems with repeater phones, so I guess I either got an updated repeater phone or the problems weren't as advertised. Either way, I don't want to have that ability taken away from me. Temperature is going to go into the 70s today, so that'll be pleasant. And I think that's about all I got KW for you. Back to that.
Speaker A: Well very nice that you, you got to hear Mary's voice and you've got good things going on so that that's good that you're keeping yourself busy.
Speaker G: I always say that you know I'm busier in retirement than I was when I worked and when I'm looking at all I'm doing I'm saying how did I, you know how did I hold down a full time job But I did but I walked away from that about ten and a half years ago and I have no regrets. Speaker B: Yeah, many thanks for that information. I had it set that way and there was one or two times when I locked up the repeater. I mean, I caught it in time. I don't have too much fun on another day off for me trying it. Well, I mean, it's talking to me. A day off, really. I got a couple of things I need to finish up on a couple jobs that are here at the house. We got our Freon came in yesterday for hv, the AC system. So we get to put that back together and refill it and recharge it. So hopefully we can get our heat back today. So that'll be awesome. It is definitely getting colder at night, so we'll see how it goes. You know, hopefully that, you know, tech support on the phone was right, and we don't have to pack this thing back up and send it back and get a new one, hopefully. So we'll see how it goes, but that's pretty much all I got. This is KN6WQ.

Speaker F: Yes, indeed. I thought we had it at first, and then I'm glad that I had. I had met this AC guy and I did some trade work with him. So he came over and started looking at a couple things and trying to see what was going on. And he did some temperature sweeps and did some stuff. And he knows all about these mini split things, so I'm very thankful for that. So he was like. One of them was putting out, like 101.5 temp, which is apparently too high. And then the other ones weren't putting out much at all. But the AC compressor was going to the moon when it shouldn't do that because it's trying to satisfy all the other heads.
Speaker G: Right.
Speaker A: So it should be.
Speaker F: They should put out around 98 degrees, from what I understand. I thought they would do more than that, but I guess not. I mean, they do have an electric heat function. So on the remote control, you can put on the electric heat, and it will turn a little heater element on on top of the refrigerant to help heat the house faster. Or if it's too cold outside, we can still have Heat.
Speaker G: So that's pretty cool.
Speaker F: But anyway, yeah, hopefully this gets it fixed and we can be done with the, you know, the installing the heater system in the house saga, because I'm ready to move on to something else or at least take a break for a day. Speaker A: Dan, I'm sorry to hear about this because these splits were supposed to be the definition of simplicity. When we lived in Dayton, Ohio, we had a house that was all electric. It had a heat pump, but it also had those supplemental electric heating elements. And the heat pump was good down to, I don't know, somewhere in the 40s, I would guess. And then those heat elements came on and holy moly. You could go out and watch your electric meter spinning and the bearing in the middle of the meter would start smoking because the little disc was spinning so fast. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but. Oh, man. Keep that living where you do. I don't think you need those electric elements on. It will destroy all the benefit you get from going with your split unit.
Speaker F: Yes, Jerry, I have actually heard and I'm very, very aware of that. So, yeah, I'm trying very hard. I was trying to teach everybody else because, you know, they're touching their moats and playing with all the buttons like everybody else wants to do. And that's fine to kind of, you know, figure it out. You know, just make sure that they turn it off so that their way they're not using it when it doesn't need to be used. But yeah, absolutely. I have seen that personally. That the bearing smoking? Not really, but yes, I understand what you're saying.
Speaker G: Let's see.
Speaker F: Yeah, so what our problem was is that basically the unit is supposed to come pre charged with maximum of 125ft of line set. So we have 165ft total. So that that's the reason why the simplicity wasn't there.
Speaker D: So we had to.
Speaker F: And in addition to that, this unit runs on some new Freons, so it runs on R32, which nobody really has yet because it just came out. So I had to buy 20 pounds of it, which we're going to use on the system. And then I'm going to give it to the AC guy and he's going to go burn it up in a couple of jobs and give me my money back. So basically it's going to be for free. So it's not going to be that bad. So Anyway, alright, I'm gonna let you guys get on with the net here. This is KN6WQ.
Speaker A: Well I can see why you need additional Freon or whatever that's called when you have more line but you have multiple heads which introduces a complexity all of its own. So good luck with all of that. Eventually you'll get it in and you'll love it, but meanwhile you hate it until that point arrives. Good luck with that and good talking to you. This is WA6E. Speaker D: Okay, because I've mentioned this before, when it goes back to daylight savings that'll open it back up and I don't mind going at the end like I usually have, but I do know, you know it gets long and I, and I get that. So I'll keep it short here. WB6BJN. Looks like nice weather over California because you guys are under high pressure and it's going to continue that way pretty much for the foreseeable future. The system that was supposed to bring some rain maybe, but by the weekend has fizzled and the 6 to 10 and 8 to 14 day outlook. Look, it's going to continue to be dry for California and much of the western United States and you guys really need some snow in the Sierras and rain in the valley. So it's been way below normal and the fog is going to continue in the valley and nice weather along the coast with temperatures in the 60s and the 70s now moving to the rest of the nation, there's what they call a bombo Genesis low pressure area. Let me take a break. It's going to affect the Carolinas and go up the east coast and then it's supposed to get colder through the weekend here. We've had a low this morning of 20.7 degrees and it's going to make it all the way up to 27 this afternoon. And then major cold weather back here. And that's bad because people in the south are still without power and over 100 people have died from the storm that we had last week and the cold weather that is currently happening. The good news is it looks like it's going to try to warm up quite a bit back here next week, and that's a good thing. And we might get some rain to melt off all the rest of the ice.

Speaker A: it's just getting dark.
Speaker G: And the WX, which is not really applicable to any. The majority of the people on the net, it's dull, gloomy, overcast. I've had the lights on in the house all day long. It's that dark and gloomy. It's a miserable day. It is a miserable day. Outside, it's quite nice in here. So we've been working on. A lot of people I speak to are doing mesh core setups. There's quite a lot of interest in the. In the town I live in, we've got quite an active amateur radio collection of reprobates. In this particular town, there's at least a dozen active people and another probably half dozen or so who pop in now and again. We've gone on to this mesh core thing. I've also got friends all over the country. They're all talking about Mesh Corps. I go on the Nets over in Seattle and of course they're all talking about mesh corps as well. We've taken the plunge. We've ordered a board which is on the slowboat from China, I think three weeks it's coming. It'll be arriving sometime. I think it's the 9th of February, so probably not next week, but the week after that, which is the main bit. I've got the antenna, I've got the battery, the solar charges are on order. So, yes, it's all coming together as a bit of a project, but it keeps me out of mischief. As I say, I'm quite forward to it. And apparently you can have like two parts. You have your companion, which is your particular gateway or node or whatever you want to call it, and you then go to repeaters. But, you know, you don't want a repeater at your house. If you've got a companion node, you need it to be some distance away, so you see the rest of the network. So, yeah, so I'm going to play with that. Of course, it involves my other. One of my other favorite hobbies at the moment, 3D printing. So once I get all the bits together, I can design and build a print case to put it all in, you know, so it's, it's quite good fun. And I've just had a few deliveries. I've got a little gas, gas torch which I've laughed to for ages to the heat shrink and all this sort of thing on cables and one or two other little jobs.
Speaker A: So.
Speaker G: So, yes, so we're making the most of a particularly miserable day. But yeah, what can I say? And the reason I'm losing the Shire is I actually live in North Worcestershire and rather than put you guys Worcestershire, I'll just say I'm from the Shire. But I used to work at Lee and Perrins years ago. I was an engineer there before I retired and used to make sure that the world always got his Lee and Perrin sauce.

Speaker A: Well, it sounds like you are keeping yourself well and truly busy and how nice that you've got lots of other hands in your location so you guys can get together and do fun stuff. I don't know much about mesh corps people here starting to talk about it. So I am sure that that is something that will float into our vision sometimes and I anticipate that being the next trip down to ham radio outlet to see what we can find. So glad that you're. You're keeping yourself busy and sounds like you've got things to keep you occupied underneath that gloomy dark. Day.

Speaker B: On top of it all, I spent a lot of time last week. One of my, one of my things that something I do with the grand grandkids granddaughters is air rifle target shooting. And I'm negotiating with a firearms dealer down in Essex to get a rifle made in the Ukraine to my personal specifications. They decided it's quite a nice setup. So they're actually going to order a lot of them. They're actually giving it a name. It's on their web page. But yes, it's a cross between a Biasalon type rifle, one of these things the guys have on the back when they're skiing around, and then choose shoulder straps and they take them off and then they shoot the target and off they go, and the normal sort of rifle. So it's a cross between the two. Not quite as extreme as Biafran rifle, but something to get with the adjustability so that the gun daughters so I can make the stock shorter, the reach smaller, and also just get the cheek rest in to get it right for them. So that's the whole idea behind it. And yeah, so as I say, I've got an awful lot of projects. In fact, when I retired, I suddenly became very, very busy because I suddenly realized when I retired I got this

Speaker C: No, no, I don't hold y' all responsible. As usual, I blame Mark. If I didn't blame Mark, I think he'd think something was wrong.
Speaker A: We have to blame somebody. It's not our fault. Yes, yes, we have in the past and probably will be in the future, blaming Mark for whatever weather we're having. I hesitate to do that now because poor Mark's getting the blowback from that weather himself. So he's suffering, too. So I guess we can't blame him. If he's suffering and you're suffering, you can blame whoever you want.
Speaker C: It's really not too bad. The weather is, you know, on the I don't feel like it's an I don't feel like going outside kind of. Whether or not I can't go outside kind of weather. It's more the lack of sunshine. So I've got a sun lamp on and making sure sure to keep the inside light and hopefully maybe even might light a fire tonight in the fireplace. You know, do what I can to stay cheery.
Speaker A: I understand completely. Well, you at least have a furry kitty that can sit on your lap and make you feel good.
Speaker C: And that's where she's been, Ben. Kind of.
Speaker A: Ah.
Speaker C: She's actually approaching me right now. She must have heard your voice. The only problem is I've got jeans on. And she will. If I'm wearing shorts, she'll completely jump on my lap. But if I'm wearing jeans, she decides to jump up on my calf and then climb up on my leg. Because she's like, well, you can handle it if you've got jeans on.
Speaker A: I have been climbed by those tiny little sharp kitty claws. Yep. At one point we had our cat had five kittens. And yes, they would use us as climbing trees. What a great experience.
Speaker C: I think part of being a cat owner or part of checking people out for being a cat owner is seeing if they have. Can handle claws and teeth. Because if you have a cat, at some point you will be bit and you will be clawed, not in anger, but in affection. And they will. They will. They don't do it out of meanness unless you're threatening them. And if you don't understand that you shouldn't be a cat owner.
Speaker A: It's bad enough when they're making happy paws on your lap or on your shoulder and those little claws, just the tips come out with the touch, touch, touch. You know, that's not really comforting. Well, yeah, the only time I've ever been. Well, let's see. He wasn't really angry with me, except I was trying to shove a pill down his throat and bit me so hard his tooth went right through my thumbnail. Yeah. I went over to the vet and said, this cat is going to die because I'm not giving him any more pills. And they said, oh, well, you can use this little pill thing that you clamp the pill in it and you shove it in the back of their throat, and then you push the plunger and the pill shoots down their throat and you don't have to put your finger in there. Why didn't you tell me that before?
Speaker C: I love the little memes that go around where, you know, Hercules goes through his feats of strength. And the last one is. Is pulling a cat, which he, of course, fails.
Speaker A: Ah, yes. Or washing a cat. Or one of our daughter's cats was. Had extremely hirsute, and she got hairballs, you know, almost instantaneously. And trying to brush her, that was another. And that's another exercise in total futility.
Speaker C: I can brush our cats when I need to. That's not a problem. But part of it is establishing a safe place and making sure that they don't feel threatened by it. I had to work on our current cat's predecessor quite a bit. She was a long hair, and I was really the only one who could do it. And I knew when to stop and, you know, give it a break. And then she'd come back and we'd work on it some more.
Speaker A: Well, you're a very patient cat, dad. That's good. So what exciting things do you and kitten have planned for your gloomy day in Chicago?
Speaker C: Oh, more job search, as usual during the weekday. Get a little exercise in and some cw. And I found I've got a trilogy, science fiction trilogy that I'm rereading, and I needed a break. I tend to do nonfiction reading, and my mind just needed a bit of a Break. But I do need to go over the material for the extra class that I'll be teaching in two weeks and see if need to tweak any of my slides for that.
Speaker A: Ah yes, I understand that completely. And a reread. I have several when my the world is just not not going well. It's just too much with me as they as the poet said, I go to those books even though I have read them multiple times because they're comforting. I know how it's going to turn out. And the dog doesn't die.
Speaker C: I understand that completely. It's like watching mash. I've seen those episodes I don't know how many times, but sometimes you just need to go with what a friend of mine and I call comfort food.
Speaker A: Yes. Yeah. Big Bang Theory is one of those are Hogan's Heroes. I think we have both memorized all of the scripts for Hogan's Heroes. But you know, we'll turn that on and watch them again.
Speaker C: And I think that's absolutely wonderful to do. There are times when you just need to know when and how to step away. Given my weekend, I've got a funeral that I need to be at tomorrow morning. Beloved deacon in our church. She was also a German teacher at the college that I graduated that I got my bachelor's and one of my masters at. And the consistent story was she was everybody loved her and if you weren't a little afraid of her, you hadn't really met her. Info kisses.

Speaker C: Maeve is currently a shorthair. Just his little sweet tabico. I've also found that dipping them in Nair and holding it under them in the bucket for about 10 minutes works too with the long hairs.

Speaker C: And I think you know me well enough that I would threaten, but I wouldn't actually do it.

Speaker D: Yes, and I was just sitting here chuckling about the gentleman with the cats. It is said by people who know that if a cat purrs, you can domesticate it. If it roars, you can't. Well, in the purring category come mountain lions and cheetahs. And worldwide, they're kept as pets quite often. I knew one person who had a pet cheetah. They didn't live in the US But I did know one person who lived in the US Had a pet mountain lion. It was very friendly, it was very sweet and used to play kind of rough. But it was an interesting pet. But the question in both of them came to my mind is how do you pill them?
Speaker A: You have a really big pill thing and it's sturdy enough that they can't bite through it. Let's see, I read something that a mountain lion. No, it was the bear that could. The hippopotamus that can break a bowling ball. Okay, so we're not going to kill the hippopotamus. The cat probably still has a pretty good bite. Yeah, I think you're going to have to sneak it in some treat that they really like to eat.
Speaker D: That was my thought as well. Especially the mountain lion. I mean, he had teeth that, you know, I guess two, three feet. Two feet, two, three inches long. You know, those, those front fangs. What do they call them, incisors or whatever they are. I'm not a dentist. Sorry. But yeah, the. Yeah, the big teeth and small hand.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker D: No, I'm not sticking my hand in there. The interesting thing was, if he wanted your attention or what wanted you to go do something with him, he'd come up and literally, he wouldn't bite your leg. He would hold your leg at the ankle, and then he'd like, kind of tug, like, I want you to go this way. And if you walk that way, he'd let go and walk beside you and you'd follow him to whatever he wanted. But if you tried to pull away or whatnot, he'd just hold you there and the pressure would get a little bit more on the ankle, and you're like, no, I ain't doing it.

Speaker A: This.
Speaker B: And you go with him, but he was actually kind of a sweet cat. He'd cuddle with you and all kinds of stuff. But anyway, moving on from cats this morning, Larry and I dug into the Collins S line yesterday. We got the 75s1 receiver up and working. We got the 32s1 transmitter up and working. Then we got the 30l1amplifier up and working for a period of time. Something went terribly wrong, and it. Well, not terribly wrong, but something went wrong in it as we were about two hours into the operation on it. So that's going to need some research and repair. But the rest of it, you know, it's. There's some alignment issues and there's, you know, a few little things here like that. But, my gosh, you could tell this was the Rolls Royce in its day.
Speaker C: Morning, Tom. WA6C. Well, congratulations on getting it up and running. And the L1, what kind of tubes does it have in the final?
Speaker B: The 30L one has four 811 as in it, all four of them. Interesting.
Speaker C: I thought it might use some of the old imac tubes. Well, you know, why is that old capacitor somehow stick in the back of my mind?
Speaker B: Well, yes, Something started arcing in there in idle mode, just sitting there. We weren't even transmitting at the time, and all of a sudden something started arcing in it. Luckily, the switch was inches from my hand, so I just turned it off real quick. So, yeah, something gave. No big deal. It was expected, to be honest with you, the other two radios, the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver, when we first turned it on, didn't work worth a darn. And we're like, okay, so let's troubleshoot this puppy. And we're just about ready to get into it, and all of a sudden, bang. It came on with a bang. And not a bang, but a pop. And it came on and we're like, oh, okay, that's interesting. And we turned it off and we turned it. We did a little reading. You have to wait for that crystal oscillator to warm up in the thing before it will receive. We didn't know this. And it's kind of like learning a new language, Jerry. And you know how it is with those people that speak different languages. They have a different word for everything.
Speaker C: Yeah, it's amazing how that works. Well, you have to learn how to speak Collins. Cosmetically. How do they look?
Speaker B: Well, you could go on to the YouTube channel and take a look at them. I posted two videos of them. And the other atlas that we did. We did three radios yesterday. A Drake receiver that came on. You can see it's receiving rf and you can hear because of a slightly scratchy pot that the AF amp is working, but somehow it's not making it through the if stage, from the RF stage to the AF stage. So we're going to have to get in there and play with that. Then we hooked up the atlas. And of course, an atlas, it works. It had a lifted ground on the microphone, so there was some RF getting into it. But once that was corrected, it is my current experience that you can't break an atlas. So we're working on it. Well, no, we're not trying. We're just working on making them work. And then we put up the Collins and it took the major portion of the day just to. I mean, there's certain things we haven't figured out yet, like how to make it transceive. There's connections that it's saying that we should make that we just weren't able to find right away. So I'm going to have to get out some photographs and some charts and whatnot and find out where those plugs are and that kind of thing. But as a separate receiver and transmitter, we were able to get it up and running just fine. And it was receiving. Boy, that VFO. It's only a 200kC VFO. Moster 500. It's only a 200kc VFO, but boy, talk about smooth and accurate and band spread for days. I mean, you could turn that thing a half a turn and you're still on the signal. You know, it's just. It's amazing.
Speaker C: Wow, only 200 KC. I don't know how you doom the whole band. Well, I'll have to go over and as soon as I give the mic back to Theta, I'm going to go over to Confederate Sun 1 and check out this thing. There was always something about going into the Mars stations. I volunteered at the Air Force Mars stations, wherever I was. And you'd walk in and the place was loaded with Collins equipment from one end to the other. KWM2AS, as well as the receivers and transmitters and so forth. And there was just this smell. It's like when you walk into Barnes and Noble, you know, that book smell. It's the same thing for to walk
Speaker B: into
Speaker C: a Mars station, smell all that Collins equipment. It just brings back memories. Maybe they ought to make a spray that smells like Collins equipment being used and sprayed around hro.
Speaker B: Well, I do know that they make an air freshener Called that new car smell, which outgassed vinyl. I don't know what that smell is. But in any case, yeah, there is an air freshener with that scent. So, yeah, making the new radio smell I should too difficult, I wouldn't think. And it's all a matter of luck. Which leads me to my next topic here. Was reading this morning about. Now, I don't know if this is a man who has bad luck or a woman who has bad luck, but somebody in this equation has bad luck. And that is there was a. In the 1950s, around 1957 or so, there was a now hall of famer baseball player named Richie Ashburn. And Richie Ashburn was at Batman in 1957 and he hit a foul ball that went into the crowd and hit this poor woman in the face. Broke her nose. Bloody mess, terrible thing. Anyway, they got her on a stretcher on a gurney and they're taking her out of the stadium and there's a tunnel that goes from the field out of the stadium to the parking lot for the players to use or to the, you know, area that the players use. And they just wheeled her into that. Well, they continued the game after she was wheeled into the tunnel. And Richie Ashburn comes up to bat again and lo and behold, his second pitch, he hits another foul ball that goes directly down that tunnel and hits that poor woman again.
Speaker C: Oh no, she should have bought a lottery ticket. It was just her time. I had threat about that, but poor girl. Now see, there's the difference. That's a 1957 story. And in 2026, the story would be she sued the stadium, she sued the baseball team, she sued the player, and they settled for an undisclosed amount
Speaker B: and poor Richie Ashburn was declared a domestic terrorist or something. Yeah, yeah, I see that coming. Anyway, if you want to take a look at the work that Larry and I did yesterday, there is, there are three new videos up on Confederate sun, one, if that hit you at all. And yeah, Larry and I have been talking about possibly expanding some of what we do in these videos. We're not quite sure yet. I don't want to be a YouTube creator or that type of thing. But on the other hand, I think that maybe there's some explanation that needs to go with the, with the radios and that type of thing as opposed to just showing the radio. Those that know, know. But there's a lot of people out there that don't know and might be helped by, you know, understanding what they're seeing. So anyway, we've been discussing that along those lines, I bought Larry and I brand new lab coats. His has his name on it and says chief Technician on it. So there you go. He's going to be proudly wearing his lab coat soon.
Speaker C: Oh, my God. Next thing you know, we're going to have videos up and you're going to look like Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker fixing radios. On an unrelated subject, as you came on to talk, I was reading an article here about unused or underused gift cards. They're warning people, go find them out of your drawers and use them. According to the New York State Comptroller's office, there's nearly $55.5 million in gift card balances in the New York City alone. People who have bought these gift cards and have not been redeemed. And in New York, apparently, you only have five years to do it. What a great way to make money. Sell gift cards. And they never get used. I'm going to give this back to Theta and go look at the confederates on one and look at the vertical shorts.
Speaker B: This is stubby asic. Well, I did post a landscape version and a vertical short of the same. Well, not exactly the same thing, but the same radio. So you can look at it widescreen or narrow screen, it's your choice. The atlas I just did in narrow screen, we've already done an atlas, so that was not a big deal. But this one's actually cosmetically better than the first one. And gosh, you just said something that triggered a thought. But talking about that, I forgot about it. Oh, well,

Speaker C: Speaker, speaker. And the 32, though, that's a 70, 75 S1. Boy, almost looks brand new.
Speaker B: Well, I will tell you, the speaker is a counterfeit, and we discovered that yesterday. Larry spotted it first. He said that emblem's at an angle. And I know that emblem is pinned. It's not just glued on. So it's pinned. And I know that Collins would not pin it at that angle. That would never have made it past qc. So we started inspecting the speaker. And the cabinet is of modern manufacture, like, you know, in the last five years, 10 years maybe. And you spin it around, and the driver in it is a very, very high end, coaxial, Radio Shack car stereo speaker that's in there. And yeah, nothing about it is Collins. The winged emblem on the front of the speaker is the only part that is actually Collins in that entire speaker setup. It looks right, it sounds good. There's no issue with it, but yeah, it's a counterfeit.
Speaker C: Watching your movie? I'm now looking, I've stopped on that frame where the speaker is shown, and I will admit I'm not a Collins expert, but I would never have picked up that that emblem up there at the top wasn't put on correctly. You guys are getting to be real sleuth.
Speaker B: Well, we both suffer from different flavors of ocd and where one drops out, the other one seems to pick up. And yeah, Larry's big thing is that everything's got to be level and straight, which is great because you're getting all the feet and all the radios exactly the same, so that when we put them on display, they will be, you know, nice straight line across. That's perfect. But yeah, he spotted that crooked emblem right off the top. And at first I said, oh, yeah, these things happen. Then I started thinking about it and I thought, no, you know, Collins would have never let that out of the shop with that crooked like that. So we spun it around and started looking in the back and we're like, oh, this is not column.
Speaker C: No, but it's the right color. And if you can't find the real one, that'll do in a pinch. And you just have to disclose to those who are looking at it it's not the original. Congratulations on doing all that. It's looking really nice. I'm glad you guys are having a good time. You're going to need 3 or 400amp service to whatever house you buy to run all these things.
Speaker B: Well, luckily, being single, I could only. Well, to the best of my knowledge, I could figure out only a way to operate one or two radios at the same time. You know, FTA can kind of run on its own, but. Yeah. So I don't predict all of these being online at the same time, but I'm going to need a rather healthy 220 service for some of these amplifiers that are going to be plugged in. And yeah, the next on the list here, I'm going to have to get my buddy Darius to help me get it into the van. But the next on the list here is the big Henry floor amp. So we're going to pull that puppy out and get it wheeled over to Larry's there and hook that thing up. And yeah, we're going to find out exactly what that Ultimax antenna can handle, sir.
Speaker C: So when it gets rainy or foggy, it better be glowing blue up there when you got the key down. I understand what you're saying about operating them all at once, but you remind me of people. You walk into their ham shack and all the radios are on because you got to keep them warmed up or they drift.
Speaker B: Well, not only that, you also want to keep the caps free of moisture, too. And having them on does that. So, yeah, what do they draw an amp or two when they're sitting at idle? Just on with the light bulbs and stuff. So, yeah, that means I can have, what, 10 radios on at the same time. Right. Anyway, it's a fun project, and we're having a good time with it, and hopefully I will have a home soon to erect all of this and get it all up and running, and then I'll start handing out the invitations to come over and see if you can break it.

In this case, it was a Folsom state recreational area, so I was pretty stoked about that. I set up my little Zygoo G90 on a wire and got like 73 contacts yesterday, I think, but I just needed 25 to get that thousand contacts. And dawn is down in Southern California,

Speaker D: least not from her tonight. She's down visiting her brother, so I'm playing Bachelor for four days.
Speaker A: Well, first of all, congratulations on getting your Kilo Award. That's quite an accomplishment. A thousand contacts from the same park. I didn't know that was a thing, but congratulations. That's very good. Something to hang on your wall. And so Dawn's out and no trivia tonight, which means there will be free range unregulated trivia tonight, which has its own flavor, but it's certainly more restful when Don does it.
Speaker D: I would encourage people to just bring up some trivia questions. If I'm here and by a radio, I'll do my part. I'm gonna go spend time with my grandkids and my daughter today. I'm not sure what time I'm gonna get back, probably have dinner with them. I would encourage people to just bring up. And you can search for music trivia, you could search for feature. I mean, there's a ton of trivia online. Obviously don't tell anybody what page you're reading it from, so they can't cheat, but if that's their thing. But that's what I would do. That's what I've done in the past. So I would encourage that. That way you, you know, if any. But we'll try to get back to it in a couple weeks. And she needed to go down there and help her brother out. He's in an assisted living place and he's the only family she's got left. I'm to the point where if I go even to Sacramento or any city, I just can't wait to get back out of the city.

She said it's seven lanes of traffic and they're all going 70 miles an hour sitting six inches from your bumper. She was never so glad to get away from any place in her life. So, yeah, no fun down there. But I'm glad that she is down there helping her brother out, and I hope that she can be of some good use to him and help him get in a better situation. So that's hard. How much water is used on the space station? A trick question because they recycle everything. I mean some of it's got to get used up and included in the people that are there as part of their being. But the rest of it gets recycled and they do a good job of that. So anyway, no minimum age for the space station. A couple other questions. But yeah, it's fun to listen in.

But I've been out here, you know, on and off Central Valley repeaters for years. I'm currently the current net control station for the N6ICW at NorCal swap while Armand is taking care of medical stuff and getting that that done. I've been doing it for almost a year now, so there's that. I also have a smallish YouTube channel. Brian knows all this, but you and Jerry and others might not. I have a smallish YouTube channel. It's under my call sign KG6 November Limawiski NLW and I actually overnight and into mid morning or so stream random live streams of audio from the two meter machines and my All Star node. Speaker A: Well, in a lot of cases it reminds me of the early 70s. Well, actually up into the mid-70s, most repeaters were pretty unconstrained. And I guess that's a nice way of putting it and saying, God, I hope I can't get in trouble for something I did, you know, that many years ago.

But that was the fun Thing, you know, And I think Brian always says that that's why he started this because he got tired of listening to people talk about the good old days when people actually talked on the repeater. And he's managed to recreate that where we now have a repeater that people talk on. Isn't that nice? Actually it is.
Speaker A: And like I said, a wide range of subjects and people makes it really interesting. Anyway, you still got a bunch of other people here. That's one thing I thought I better bring up why I could.

I am the guy who runs the one of the most active parrot nodes on the All Starlink system 55553. So anytime that happens, I have to point stuff like that out.

Speaker B: And the. The volume is just barely creeped up.

Speaker D: Happy Friday indeed. Boy, Thursday. Thursdayed all over the Thursday yesterday. I mean it could not have been any more of a Thursday. Let me tell you some of the stuff that happened. So let's see. I went to a dentist office, was told that I needed a root canal.
Speaker I: That's always a good start.
Speaker D: I got two items that were damaged in shipping. I had to scrap a project that I've been working on for the last three days because everything was just going wrong beyond repair.
Speaker A: And.
Speaker D: Yeah, and then I discovered I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic that I was prescribed. So definitely a Thursday.
Speaker B: Oh, that sounds like a Thursday. That just saved itself up for you.
Speaker D: No kidding. I mean it's not like I go out of my way for these things to happen, but Thursdays.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker D: Anyway, and so I have. On Monday I have an appointment at 11. Hopefully I'll be able to sneak in a quick check in before I walk into the before I have to sit in the chair. The dreaded chair. Not a guarantee, but I'll certainly try. And let's see, we're supposed to get anywhere from 5 to 8 inches of snow over the weekend. So maybe that appointment won't be happening. It's not going to be actually actively snowing on Monday, but this place kind of shuts down at the slightest provocation. Here in central North Carolina, we're still kind of recovering from the last storm. There's still plenty of streets and parking lots and driveways that are still iced over. It hasn't stayed above freezing long enough to melt and stay melted.
Speaker I: So we're going to get a bunch
Speaker D: of junk on top of that, I guess.
Speaker B: Fun times. I remember that from Dayton, Ohio, but Ohio tends to expect that kind of thing. And you guys don't.
Speaker D: Yeah, this has been, we haven't really had a winter like this since 2018. I remember 2018. I was trying to go back home, oh gosh, probably a little bit prior to mid January and couldn't get out of the house for about three days for various reasons. So that wasn't happening. And then when we did, my dad drove me to Charlotte. That's about a two hour drive from here to get to the airport that I didn't really want to fly out of but it was kind of the only option. It was 4 degrees. The heater in the truck didn't work and we weren't quite dressed for the occasion. So it was a, it was a cold two hour drive to Charlotte.
Speaker B: Oh my goodness, yes. Not, not a happy memory, that's for sure. It's hard to carry on a conversation when everybody's teeth is chattering. No kidding.
Speaker D: Oh well, it is what it is. So Greg emailed me a few days ago. He was here earlier, he was talking about that, that school contact with the ISS and I had every intention of checking that out because I'm in right now. I was in what would have been the footprint at the time. Pretty easy. Just probably step out on the back porch and pull out the HT and listen for the ISS frequency. And I had every intention of doing that. And the antibiotics said no, you are not doing that. I missed about four hours of my life very suddenly looked at the time, it was 8 o' clock and I looked at the time again and it was 11:30. So whoops, that didn't happen. So Greg, I'm afraid I can't answer that question for you.
Speaker B: Well that's sad because now we all want to know the answer to that question because the things that we're all imagining are getting from pretty wild.
Speaker D: Yeah, some of those have, some of those have live streams and some of those are archived. I don't know if this is one of them but yeah, I guess it'll just remain a mystery for now. Chaos exchange comment.
Speaker B: Go ahead, Greg.
Speaker K: Yeah, Patrick, it was live streamed and the you go to live aris.org l I v e.a r I s s.org the live stream is there. They had a fade right when that question number four came by and we didn't hear the answer. So I, I saw the kid ask the question but on the live stream but we didn't hear the answer to her question so.

Speaker A: You know, a very long audiobook out of it if you're very careful. So, yeah, somebody. Somebody get on that.
Speaker B: Okay, definitely. Well, so they have you on a different antibiotic now.
Speaker A: I'm getting switched this. It's been prescribed, but it's not at the pharmacy yet. So, yeah, I'm switching hopefully in the next hour or so to a different one. See if this one works a little better.
Speaker B: Yes, it can be really nasty when those antibiotics or any other thing that they're giving you decide to step up and slap you in the face. So, yeah. Hope you get a good one.
Speaker A: Here's hoping and also hoping that things don't turn out to be worse after the. They did say that there are, there are probably other complications that need to be taken care of, but they wanted to get the root canal done first and it was one of those. They, they looked at it and they said, how long are you going to be in town? How soon can we do this? You never, you never want to hear that.
Speaker B: Well, on the other hand, that sounds pretty good to me. If you're having tooth problems, you don't want to hang around for three or four weeks.
Speaker A: Yeah, true. And it's definitely on Sunday night. It basically put me right on the floor. It was bad. It's not that bad now, but, oh, man, I have a pretty high pain tolerance and that just took me out for the day, basically. So I would really enjoy not having that problem anymore.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's the kind of situation where when the dentist says things like that, you say thank you very much.
Speaker A: Yeah. And then the virtual cash registers also thank me very much. Oh, well, anyway, I don't have too much more, so I'll let you get on to the next customer.

And I'm adhd, and so if it doesn't work right away, sometimes I just go, you know what? There's probably better things to do with my time.
Speaker B: Well, I can guarantee you that if you're adhd, you're not going to take up knitting. Jerry says you missed a good bike ride. Yeah, I did.
Speaker C: I've been pretty busy. But I have been getting in bike rides. I've been going down to Birdsville river access or Oregon bar river access almost every day. So I'm getting in that. I do miss the rides. With the camaraderie group, though that is a fact. And I think that maybe next week I'm going to get back into it if it's not snowing or raining torrentially.

Speaker C: You know, before I go, I want to tell you the quick little story. My neighbor cat, Caramel Apple, who is a long haired cat, she started out being the devil cat in the neighborhood. Now she's gotten a little bit older, a little more mature, a little more docile. She's actually standing at my feet right now. And she tried to take over my man cave. I got up out of my chair, she got on my chair. I couldn't get her off of my chair. She dug her claws in. And I'm trying to decide should I just get another chair and swing that one the other direction or will she take over the new chair? So that's how I'm perplexed this morning. I love her a lot, but I may just end up throwing her out the door and slamming it.
Speaker B: Well, if you get another chair, she will immediately go jump in the chair you ought to sit in. This is her effort to give you a new exercise routine. They say that we should do a lot of squats or chair squats, going up and down off of a chair. So this is her effort to make you do that. You sit down on one, she wants it. Speaker D: But today it's pretty pleasant. The sun's actually about to come out. I got to see blue skies for the first time in a couple of days. We had snow in Boise a couple days ago very much. Speaker B: Morning, Bob Waxe. Yeah, we plan to be there and we'll also be at the following version testing and then got a meeting coming up in February, early February. I'm looking forward to going to the new digs.
Speaker A: Yes, sir. I have not seen the new digs. I'm almost toying with the idea of just jumping in the car and running over there and finding the place so I can just drive right to.
Speaker B: It's only about
Speaker A: two or three minutes from the house. So that's going to be an upgrade for me. I mean, literally, I can take the bike when it gets a little warmer.
Speaker B: Yeah, for that matter, you could walk. Of course, the church wasn't that far from you anyway, so. Yeah, go ahead and do that. I saw it on the, on the zoom session they had when they're setting it up. It looked very nice and I understand the acoustics are wonderful,

Speaker A: going to miss the echoey Jim sound. I mean, it's just not going to be the same.
Speaker B: Well, I kind of agree that statement. It's not going to be the same,
Speaker C: but I'm not going to miss it.
Speaker B: I mean, when we are actually trying to do things like the trivia contest or speeches for acceptance of awards and the like, it was just tough to hear.
Speaker A: This will.
Speaker B: This will make it better. I understand that. The downside to this, this is if you're in the back of the room and you're having a little sub conversation with the person next to you. Excuse me. The microphones are so hot they can pick it up.
Speaker A: Yeah, I guess we should know our audience. Not really. The people that sit politely with their hands folded in their lap and don't sound anything.

Speaker B: Oh, you'll have to do it with paper and pencil so you can pass notes back and forth. Kind of like back in grade school.

Speaker B: and good morning, Dan. I saw you logged in, but you weren't transmitting. I figure, let's see, this time of year, it's just two hours difference. You were probably out surfing.
Speaker D: No.
Speaker C: Good morning, Jerry. I didn't get the paddleboard out. It was a late night last evening. Enjoyed some time with friends and we had game night here. So it's just a relaxing morning waking up and yes, I did turn on to tune in while I was getting things going, starting the kitchen items up and things like that. So it's nice listening in just to feel connected, realize what's going on with everybody, that you're familiar with the ongoing stories. I got in late. The two hour difference is definitely easier. You know, when you're talking to people, even on the east coast, some friends out on the other side, it makes a little bit of a difference, I think.
Speaker B: Yeah, it didn't used to make much of a difference, but now that you get old, it makes a big difference and it is kind of a comfort level. I used to enjoy listening to HF as I drove along to these various nets. It just kind of made the miles disappear and very much the same thing. This is in the background most of the time when I'm in here doing other stuff. So it's enjoyable. I know Aaron's out there. W1ATV. Good morning, Aaron. I know Theta said hello, but he's driving back near Winnemucca. I'm sure he's just listening and doesn't want to say anything. Doesn't have much to contribute, just enjoys listening. So. Yeah, I also notice our back channel gets really quiet when you get over there. You keep saying when you get older.

Speaker C: of my drop later. I'm realizing now I have to budget a little bit more time to do the things that I would normally just whack out pretty quickly. But I got the place all washed down, got the lanai all set up. We're good. We're settled in, so it'll be a nice thing. I said, it's great not having the projects this time. And Chris told me on my way out, she said, the projects will find you. And sure enough, there's a few that popped up that are saying, I'm here.
Speaker B: Of course, that goes with owning something, be it a car, a house, a plane, a boat. There's always something to do. Even when you think you have it in status quo, then you're overlooking something. So when you box it up and put the locks on the door to come back here, do you leave? Do you have a procedure that you follow? Do you turn off the water heater, for example, or turn off the water to the house so that if something starts to leak, it doesn't flood? What do you do?
Speaker C: Oh, yeah, big procedure. So I'm going to go down and look at this so I can remember. I can usually do this in my sleep, really been done so many times. But the water to the house is turned off. The irrigation water is left on. Don't trust any of the braided lines or things like that to any of that type of stuff that can happen. Any bursts I can go on. Oh, see, look, I'm so late. The neighbors are already coming back with the kids. It's fun to see because people come in and enjoy the place. Sometimes they have others come in. There's a surgeon across the street that we see various people from his practice that come in with kids and things like that. But the water turns off. All the stuff is locked in. The cameras are up, so we can usually see pretty well what's going on. The joke around here is the cameras are up so you can make sure the gardeners are coming in and doing things right. It's a tiny place. It's not the big palatial stuff that you hear of people building on all the outer islands. This is just a working man's hut, I call it. Interestingly, the place was designed as executive homes for people who are on island. And we had originally gotten it for thinking that we would move and have our son go to school here and raise him in a little bit more sequestered, safer, as I remembered growing up. But it didn't work out that way and for all the right reasons. But now hoping to spend more time and yes, we lock it down good. Make sure to the best of our ability that nothing can go wrong and just handle the things as we come back in again. But if you can imagine all your spread out maintenance that we all do at our homes throughout the year is now consolidated into those times when you come in and even with good people, you still get your hands in there and get things going.

Speaker D: Hello, Jerry Hole. Dan. You know, we do something similar at the place up in Taoma by the lake, but we found that a checklist really helps. And I'm sure, Dan, you probably do the same thing. You probably use a checklist because invariably it's kind of like an airplane pilot, you know, they do it over and over again. But if you don't have a checklist, if you don't check it off, invariably you'll forget a step and you'll probably be halfway home before you recall that
Speaker A: you forgot that step.
Speaker D: So we have a laminated card for what to do to open up and we have a laminated card what to do to close down the house. And we found that served us very well over the years. In fact, I have both of them sitting in front of me because I'm going to update them with some of the recent changes we made. And you know, we don't call our play, I call it a house, but it's really a cabin, just like your hud. You know, it's a nice place, comfortable place, but it's not a huge palace. Casey6Silly.
Speaker C: I don't know if I can go direct here, Jerry, but you're absolutely right. Green we do have a very pretty extensive text note in some online app. So it's on the phone and it's mostly used for others who want to take a look at what's going on. But yeah, the list is long because we actually have a solar water heater set up and it has to be drained so I can do it very quickly. But it's very specific in what levers have to be turned, when to drop all the water out of the solar panel, the collector up top. If we do not do that, the sun here, and I'm sure it's probably the same way in Florida, will superheat the water in the tank if I come in alone. It's a 75 gallon water tank and it can actually get to be too hot if I don't use enough water. So I have to manage that and either turn the pump on so it recirculates all the time or just drain the panel out and shut the system down. So there are quite a few of these individual items that amount to a lot when you add them all up. But little things like that that are specific to the area, and I'm sure you do too. You have to make your place ready for the snow if you're going to not be up there before the big drop.
Speaker D: That's exactly right. Because, you know, we're just the polar opposite.
Speaker C: We.
Speaker D: We have to worry about things freezing and bursting. You have to worry about things oiling and bursting. So that's exactly the reason what we did, you know, I re plumbed the whole place. You probably have done the same thing years. I replumbed it years ago. Made sure everything flowed down to a low point. I put in vacuum brakes on the top of the water heater so they know the line strain completely. And we put electric valves in. And the electric valves make it a lot simpler than people having to go around and, okay, there's a valve by the toilet, there's a valve under the kitchen sink, all of that. And then I built a very nice little control box with all the switches on it. So if you want to open up the hose bibs outside, you turn the switch on. If you want to drain the system, you turn these two switches down. So try to make it as simple as possible for everybody that uses the house. But the consequences of not following that list, the consequences of missing a stip, particularly in the winter, can be pretty catastrophic. So we try to be as detailed,

Speaker D: Anyway, not to interrupt your conversation with Jerry. Just thought I would listening while I was doing some work here and thought I'd chime in and compare notes. Glad you're having a good time over there. KC6SLE.
Speaker B: Well, graydon, this is WA6C. I kind of had to laugh when you would talk about a checklist. And it was laminated. We have one in the motorhome that we use. We don't have it for setting up. We pretty well figure out what's not working as we go to use it. But closing down, we have a checklist, and it's laminated, and we use it every single time. And it's amazing how often you'll miss some simple little step. For example, we have straps that we put across the front of the refrigerator so that as we go around the corner, the refrigerator doors don't pop open and. And all the contents fall out. And Theta will say to me, did you put the straps on the fridge? Oh, we missed it because she's going through the list. So, yeah, it's just bringing that discipline into your life. And I think it's funny. Braden you have the freezing problem. And, Dan, you had the overheating problem, so at least you got it under control. And Dan, sitting here listening to you, I hear all the little birds in the background, and it makes me think. It reminds me of the ride. It isn't a ride. It's a place down at Disneyland called the Tiki Hut, where you go in and all the birds sing and whatnot. I'm sure you're familiar with it. I'm envisioning your house, and you must be living in a tiki hut.

Speaker C: You know, I guess I don't really hear as much. I have to say thanks for the recording because now I'm tuned into hearing that. And I guess, yeah, it's a little bit of a Rainforest Cafe we got going on here. I don't know. It's. It's relaxing, but like anywhere else, the evening time, you can hear the ocean crashing. That's kind of nice. It lulls you to sleep, but after a while of being here, it's there. But you don't pick up on it as much. And I didn't want to make light of all the lists. You're absolutely right, Jerry and Graydon. I'm a triple A personality, and I do have lists down to the minute detail of what direction the blinds need to be turned to prevent the sun doing its thing. And the refrigerator and freezer preparation and shut down. And all of. All of the little stuff that goes into making sure that it's a great experience when you come back. And there's nothing that
