Speaker A: Kn6mg came over.
Speaker B: Bill. Good evening. My name is Dan. I'm up in Penn Valley just trying to program a radio.
Speaker A: Nice. Well, Dan, in Penn Valley. Yes, nice. I just crossed over Lake Oroville at the Lime Saddle Marina area. From Lake Oroville. Yep. Headed back towards Chico.
Speaker B: Well, that's good. Yeah, I haven't been over here in a long, long time. So just programming the radio and with some of the local stuff. Yep.
Speaker A: Well, it is a stretch from where the repeater is, I think, to where you are. So I think because of that, you know, it's a little white noise in there, but sounds good. Thank you very much.
Speaker B: Repeater sounds good up here. Like I say, I've been over here for years, a lot with this call and a different one, my original call, but used to drive a propane tanker.
Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. Well, how far did you travel in California? Did you go as far north as, like, Reading? Yeah.
Speaker B: And we hauled a lot out of Oroville, but the company was based Bakersfield. And then we started hauling out of the Bay Area. We went all the way up to Susanville. Now, tourists. And we went up to Redding a few times, but mostly California, but it was all the west slope. And we went as far south as Merced,
Speaker A: so.
Speaker B: And everything over. All the way over Watsonville and Santa Cruz Air.
Speaker A: Yeah. I used to be good friends with a guy who was the owner of the Allied Propane Service, you know, out of the Napa Valley area. And I think they had a place in like, the Bay Area over that way, too, but big place. But anyway, everyone's passed away now. We're all too old. Yeah, that is an issue.
Speaker B: And all the guys you used to run with, you know. Well, I quit driving Trailport 25 years ago, but did that job for two years. And there was a news, a guy up in paradise that. Well, he drove their transport up there for. And then I did. I drove transport for 10 years and drove Bob Hill around local for 25.
Speaker A: Yeah, I used to do business with a propane, you know, place that's been in paradise for a long time before the campfire. And now I think a lot of that stuff's all changed hands and stuff now. But anyway, used to know some of those guys pretty good. But like, right now, still doing a little bit of business with Triflame. Triflame Propane and then a little bit of K gas propane in Oroville, so. But these are just small mom and pop kind of places, really.
Speaker B: Yeah. Well, that's kind of the best one. I worked well the first company I drove for was Coast. Well, the main office was in Watsonville. Trucks all came out of Bakersfield. I was stationed at Oroville. Used to run with Randy. His son was in 62. He was in. He lives in Gridley from Air Gap and he changed his call there. But anyway, that's been a long time ago. And there was a number of propane drivers, transport drivers that had radios in their truck. So we had to all the time.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, that sounds like fun. Part of it does. Not the traffic in the Bay Area, but you know, you were heading up north and Alsuras and all that. That doesn't sound bad at all. Yeah, that wasn't one of our normal
Speaker B: haunts that you out of. The driver who was stationed up in Bordertown just north of Reno, so he did all the Nevada stuff for the most part. Summertime we'd go up to Alturas and into all that. But it was good. I liked the job and like. Well, actually that was a pretty good company. But then they got bankruptcies and sets. They got bought by somebody else. I still worked with them for 10 years or so. I suppose it wasn't what I wanted to do. Corporate took over and they kind of trashed the whole business.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, the first time I was certified to dispense propane was probably sometime around 191988 or something like that. I worked for the rental yards then, and we had to fill propane for the forklift and for customers in their little barbecue tanks and stuff like that. It was pretty fun. And even then we charged a lot of money for that kind of stuff. But that was fun stuff. And then I worked for the rental business for a bigger company, United Rentals, for few. Quite a. A while too. So I was certified to dispense propane back in those days, but nothing bigger than that. But we certainly did a lot of forklift stuff and those Genies, all kinds of stuff like that that we had to fill up all the time. So pretty fun. And then I was in the RV business where we had to deal with propane tanks on all the RVs too. But we just took them to the local paradise place there and had them filled there. So I didn't really have to do a whole lot in that regard. But propane was fun for me. It was just one of the things that we had to do in addition to other job duties.
Speaker B: Yeah, it could be a necessary evil. It's all safe if you treat it right. I used to help bundle of railcars, drove the transport and did all kinds of stuff. And then we did. When I quit driving transport, we did a bunch of, you know, service work around at the houses and different things. You know, all the residential customers and all that. But the guy, I was trying to remember what the guy's name used to drive the transport for Reliance. He used to come down Orville load all the time. But they would load his. That old Kinhwan cabble that they had, they would load that on a flat car up there at the yard in Oroville. Then they'd run up the canyon and fill all the tanks up at the switches up the canyon.
Speaker A: Yeah, that guy that I know there, I think he was really into firearms and he was good. He was a good shot too. His target shooting like Scott, I think was his name. And I've had some dealings with him. Pretty, pretty nice guy. Right now for some reason his last name's kind of avoiding my mind.
Speaker B: Yeah, names have never been one of my strong suits. Yeah, I really enjoyed the job. It just always seemed like that was what I was supposed to do. But I retired five years ago. So I had. I had 30, 29 and a half years in on propane and I did multiple other stuff for, you know, 25 years before that.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, that sounds like plenty of work. You definitely did your time. So. Yeah, now. Now you can play on the radio a little bit and have some fun that way, right?
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't play with the radio a whole lot. I need to get back into it. But there's always, you know, other chores to do and other things to occupy one's time with.
Speaker A: Oh yeah, kn6mgk here. Yeah, always there's something to do to make makes life interesting, isn't there?
Speaker B: Yeah. Okay, well, I'm going to get out of here.
Speaker A: Have a nice drive home and maybe
Speaker B: we'll catch you another time. I'm the trustee, the call sign Trustee for the 147, 015 and 285. All that the Whiskey 6 Delta Delta call. So I listen over you quite a bit. So anyway, take care, drive careful. We'll catch you again. F3W 6AI.
Speaker A: You got a nice talking to you. A pleasure. Take care of yourself and yeah, we'll hear you down the log kilo November 6th Mike Golf kilo on the W6 GRC.
Kn6mgk. Any other takers out there? I'm mobile. Getting close to highway 99. Kn6 mgk.

Speaker B: and welcome to the coffee breaknet on the W6ek repeater located in Auburn, California. The coffee breaknet where the sun is always shinin', the birds are singin and the fish are jumpin'. This net is sponsored by the Sierra Foothills Amateur Radio Club in Northern California. And we're here every day of the week from 7:30am to 10:00am Pacific Time. Please welcome your net control host and conversation facilitator for today's Coffee break net, Brian AI6US checking in from beautiful Meadow Vista, California. Let's get the coffee breaknet underway. Good morning everyone.
Speaker C: Good morning AI6US here. Beautiful Meadow Vista, California. Let's go ahead and get the Coffee Break net underway. Let's see, today is Wednesday hump day. It is February 4, 2026. It is Wednesday hump day. And let's get go through today's national days and see what's going on before we take our first round of check ins. Good morning everybody. Let's see, today is World Cancer Day. As the spouse of a survivor, it is certainly a special day for many folks out there because we all are impacted, I'm sure, by the cancer. It is promoting awareness about prevention, detection and treatment of cancer.
Speaker D: Today.
Speaker C: Today is World Read Aloud Day. The art of reading stories aloud. Yes indeed. That is allowed, right? Thank a male carrier day and a female carrier. Male carrier. U.S. postal Service. Yes. What are they going to be doing a year from now after their Amazon contract is cancelled? Will they still have enough mail to move around? It's going to be interesting to see the changes that will need to take place. Sweater Day. Do you have a favorite sweater that you wear this time of year? Today is stuffed Mushroom day. That sounds pretty delicious. And today is homemade soup day. Welcome. It's Wednesday. Let's get the coffee break net underway with some quick check ins, some quick in and outs. And this morning we'll try going back to regular check ins from anyone anywhere. I'm Brian AI6us and this is the Coffee Breaknet. Let's take quick in and outs as you start your day. Good morning Brian.
Speaker D: KV6SSN.
Speaker E: KW for you, Isseri, Lima, Sierra,
Speaker C: N6 ckv.
Speaker E: Ki 6tc,
Speaker A: K3 victor, golf mike.
Speaker C: All right, this is who I heard this morning. Good morning to jimmy ka3vgm. And good morning to glenn ki6tc. Good morning to carl in 6 ckv. And good morning to.
Speaker F: Let's see.
Speaker C: Wrote this one down in a hurry. I think it's w3ls.
Speaker F: Let's check that out.
Speaker C: W3ls yeah, that would be mary. Good morning, mary. And good morning to john. Kw4u. And starting us off will be tom. Kb6ssn did I miss anyone? That means that you tried to check in but didn't get through.
Speaker F: Kilo oscar 6 india hotel juliet. Got stomped on by tom.
Speaker A: Hey, gotta get added to the list somewhere. KC and let's go ahead and start
Speaker C: up at the top. KB6SSN Good morning, Tom.
Speaker D: Well, good morning Brian. In the net. KB6SSN Tom here. Yes, absolutely beautiful morning this morning.
Speaker C: Spent most of the day Yesterday with Dan.kn6wqu.
Speaker D: He replaced the heater blower in my in my van and now I have heat again. Oh, it feels so good.
Speaker C: But while he was there, he said,
Speaker D: you know, are you having electrical problems because of this radio installation you have here? I said, well, I'm having electrical problems problems. I don't know that it's because of the installation. He says, you know, you need to redo this. You need thicker gauge wire. You need some professional grade distributors, circuit breakers, the whole bit.
Speaker F: And I'm like, all right, do it. And he did it.
Speaker D: And oh my gosh, what a difference. Everything works 100% now all the time with everything on. No more problems with the phantom discharge that was going someplace. The only thing that actually got removed was about a six foot piece of
Speaker F: eight gauge
Speaker D: positive and negative. And I'm thinking there was a load on those wires somewhere yet. Amazon wire. Be careful. KB6SSN running great. Having a great time this morning and thanks for the KB6SSN.
Speaker C: Well, excellent, Tom. That's good to hear. And thank you Dan for identifying that for fixing the problem. The great thing is now you can run a kilowatt in your van again.
Speaker D: Oh, gosh, no. That would melt my antenna. But no, the thing was is that my inverter was only running at about half power or so. And I was also getting the squeal on this radio that indicates low voltage coming into it. But Rob pointed that out to me the other day. I started thinking there's some serious issues there. And then Dan noticed it right away as soon as he took a look at it. And I'm like, okay, so I mean
Speaker C: he literally did a commercial.
Speaker F: Perfect.
Speaker C: From battery to last terminal on the
Speaker D: last radio and everything's working great. Fantastic professional job.
Speaker F: KB6SSM
Speaker C: all right, Tom. Well, that's great news. And I was joking about the kilowatt. I know you run 2kW. Have a wonderful day. Thanks for checking in this morning. And sounds like happy radio Trails are ahead. Clearance KD6SSN. Let's check in now with John. KW4U. Good morning, John.
Speaker E: Hi, Brian. Good Wednesday morning to you. February 4th. Just got the membership committee report off to the board. The meeting will be tonight, first Wednesday of the month. That's for Blind Information Technology Solutions, as we now call it. And today will be the rounding up of the tax documents I mentioned yesterday. I punted, but not going to drag my feet any longer. And that's really all I got. KW four year.
Speaker C: Oh yeah, Tax prep day. You keep bringing that up and I keep going. Yep, I need to get to that too. Good morning, John. You have a wonderful Tuesday ahead. Thanks for checking in this morning. And we'll be clearing with KW4U. Let's head on up to Oregon. Good morning, Mary. W3LS.
Speaker G: Well, good morning Brian and the net. This is W3LS and John Spoiled my day by mentioning the T word. Thank you, John. I actually don't have all my documents available yet. That one always hangs around until way later than it should before they analyze it. Anyway, that's my excuse. Anyway, that wouldn't stop me from starting to gather stuff, which I should be doing anyway. That's enough of that. It's too depressing. We got 30s here today and it's foggy. It's supposed to get sunny later on up into the 50s. And we have air stagnation. Not a good thing. Still looking for rain. Come on down.
Speaker A: What else?
Speaker G: Oh, National Stuffed Mushroom Day. I like that. And the cancer thing, I can relate to that. I had that chemo. I don't recommend it back to net W3LS.
Speaker C: No, just. Just watching Lynn go through that process and, and it really, you know, puts a different value on every day that you get after that. And I'm certainly thankful she's eight years from now and we are thankful for every day. So glad to hear that you had a good side to your treatment as well. And you know, hopefully sometime in our lifetime cancer will be, will be a thing of our past. I'd love to talked about that in history as I'm sure you and many others. Well, hopefully that air will get cleared out of that valley up there. But that must mean that, you know, you must have a strong high pressure overhead that's probably maybe giving you a little nice winter weather to go with it. Mary, you have a wonderful day.
Speaker G: Very much. 73 stall w3ls
Speaker C: clearing with w3ls. And good morning, carl. N6 ckv. Your home on the mend. And how are you today?
Speaker H: Good morning, Brian and everyone else out there. Well, the procedure on my back one, well, I have two electrodes inserted in it to stimulate the nerves. And on the cancer front, I conquered prostate cancer and I'm still fighting thyroid cancer. So we'll see how it goes. Back to you, Brian.
Speaker C: Yes, indeed. I know, I know the trials you've been put through there and you face it every day with a determination that I admire, that is for sure. Well, along those electrodes that they put in your back, did they happen to give Ruth a little shock button, a little remote control that she can keep in line now?
Speaker H: Yeah, it doesn't shock that much, but yeah, I've got a little remote control to control it. I only run it for six hours a day.
Speaker C: Well, I was referring to it more as maybe the dog collar, but okay. I didn't wasn't aware that you had your own control of that. I thought it was something that responded. Okay, well, definitely keep us updated. I hope this technology addresses that back pain for you.
Speaker H: Yeah, I've got it for night or 60 days.
Speaker C: 6, 0 days.
Speaker H: So we'll see how it goes. Anyway, I've chewed up enough time so I'm going to say 73.
Speaker D: Everyone have a good Wednesday.
Speaker H: Thanks for the net.
Speaker E: Brian, Ida Lynn, N60KV
Speaker C: and good morning to Ruth and you. Have a wonderful Wednesday. And I'm glad that the procedure went well. And yes, 60 days. Love to hear what the prognosis will
Speaker F: be for that device.
Speaker C: Good morning, Glenn. Ki6tc.
Speaker E: Good morning, Brian. And good morning to the Net. I don't have a thing to say but I'm listening and enjoying the net. I do have a book titled to mention I'll have to come back later and offer that to the Net. Kathy shared it with me and said it's really a good book and it's an audiobook of course for me but so I'd like to share that with you. And so I'm, I'm just going to be listening and it's nice to be
Speaker C: able to say hello.
Speaker E: Thank you. Ki6tc
Speaker C: all right, Glenn, you have a wonderful day. We'll look forward to seeing what book Kathy recommends and see if you agree with her recommendation there. KI6TC AI6 US coffee break and let's check in with Jimmy Ka3 VGM.
Speaker F: Good morning, Jimmy.
Speaker A: Morning, Brian and Annette. Where it is 19 degrees according to the weather forecast. Idola second pier windows is not updating itself so but well, my uncle just got up also and he just said actually says 25 so apparently it's warmer than even the forecast. 6 But according to the forecast, it's supposed to drop all day. So we're headed back to the deep fleet, I guess, at least for a little while. You all have a good day out there in California and out west and I see you have some of that K3BTM back to you, Brian.
Speaker C: All right, Jimmy. Well, I appreciate you checking in this morning and yes, indeed, let's hope that the weather continues to improve for you guys back there. It's. I'm sure you're looking forward to springtime. Ka3vgm ai6us this is the coffee breaknet and let's see how Larry fared through the stomping at the beginning of the net. K06ihj Good morning, Larry.
Speaker F: Good morning, Brian. Good morning. Coffee break Ned. I'm wiping off the boot marks now. There's a few of them there. It's okay, I can take it.
Speaker A: I am feeling much better today.
Speaker F: I don't know if you can't tell by the pep in my voice and not the step so I'm gonna get out and do some things today. I'm waking them week. Mower belt. I broke a mower belt on the blades. I was starting to do the right thing. Get the early, early jump on the garden work, you know, the lawn work out there. But pop the belt. So there's that now. Now I'm watching my lovely daughter leave
Speaker C: for work on the cameras as she
Speaker F: goes out, gets the gate. No, I won't because it's cold out there. It's a beautiful day. Thank you, Brian, for whatever you got.
Speaker C: As we talk about getting the early start on mowing, Jimmy and others wondering how they're going to get rid of the snow and ice. Yes, indeed. One of those wonderful things about California. Sometimes you have to worry about a sunburn in February. Have a wonderful day. Larry, you are sounding more chipper and that's a good thing.
Speaker F: It is. Like I said, it's a thing I have to put up with if I want to keep reason. But yeah, all good. Everybody have a blessed day. Just got to go out get I at the grocery store.
Speaker B: I'm about to start.
Speaker F: Oh, you hear that whistle? I got to go to the grocery store today, get some preparations ready for this weekend for some reason. So I'm just going to leave it at that. No salt balloons with a KO6IHA. Everybody have a good day. 73.
Speaker C: Yeah, I know you're getting ready for this weekend. That big concert headlined by kid Rock.
Speaker F: Oh, my God. Did you see that last night? The secondary halftime show is gonna be Kid Rock and a whole bunch of who we are.
Speaker A: We don't know, people.
Speaker C: Oh, my gosh. And the thing that got me. I. I'm sorry. Trinity Broadcasting Network is going to be carrying Kid Rock. Oh, my gosh. Has any of them ever listened to his music or read the lyrics? Oh, my, my, my. Okay, enough about that. That's borderline political. If it wasn't, you know, if it was April 1st, I would have thought it was satire. Larry, have a wonderful day. I know your team's going to the Super Bowl. I wish you much happiness. And I don't know, I'm gonna have to root for the. I'm gonna have to go for the Seahawks myself. So maybe we'll have to do a side side wager on maybe a bucket of wings or something.
Speaker F: I'm all down for that. Wait, Wayne, is that part of a bird? No, we're not eating the bird. All right, get on back, people. I know I'm last in line. I'm gonna have a bunch of people checking in after me, so have fun. Brian, thanks for running that ko6ihj. I gotta get some coffee.
Speaker C: Boy, Larry, I don't know if anybody stuck around after my vicious attack on Kid Rock. Have a Great day, Larry. Ko6ihj. I'm glad. Glad you're feeling better. And yeah, good luck getting that mower belt replaced and getting that yard tamed. Have a great day. Good morning. Coffee breaknet on the W6ek repeater where the sun is always shining, the birds are singing and the fish are jumping, and the lawns are getting mowed today. Let's go ahead and take another round of quick in and outs as you start your day. I'm Brian AI6, taking check ins,
Speaker F: kilo,
Speaker E: asterisk,
Speaker C: papa, uniform, November. Corey, quicken it out.
Speaker E: KJ5 Gulf.
Speaker A: Whiskey, November. Good morning. Good morning. K, C, A, F, Q, V,
Speaker C: Golf.
Speaker A: Whiskey, November. Good morning.
Speaker C: Okay, guys, please just check in once.
Speaker A: Making a big kerfuffle here. All right, I'm going to get who I got off of this list. And then we'll come back and we'll kind of do a little fill in there. Let's see. Grayton, kc6sole. Good morning, mark. Kc8fqv. Kj5 golf, whiskey, november. Good morning, will. Kg6pun. Good morning to corey. And there were a couple other stations in there. Who did I miss?
Speaker B: Kk 6:00am,
Speaker A: Kilo oscar six kilo mike romeo.
Speaker B: Over.
Speaker A: All right, that was Robert. K06KMR. Yeah, I heard your voice in there earlier and we woke up The Crypt Keeper. KK 6:00am Ray, sounds like you're barely, barely awake this morning. So we'll give you a few minutes before we come back to you. All right, up to the top. Good morning, Corey. KG6 Pun, what do you have for the net this morning? Oh, I think we need a proof of life. KG6P U N.
Speaker B: Hey, good morning, Brian. Anyway, so Kid Rock. Yeah, I guess Bad buddy, whoever these people are. I know who Kid Rock is, but I think he's gonna bring his dog. He calls it Bedrock. I think so, anyway. Yeah, so we'll probably be turning to the other station to see what happens. Get a little more interesting. Tta, I think. Or something is doing. Or gta, let's say he's doing a. Anyway, I don't care if I watch it at all. Anyway, that's all I've got other than a beautiful day. You guys have a great day. Everybody be safe. KT6 PUA.
Speaker A: My gosh, Corey, that is the oddest thing. We got what you said, but I think a wrong codec kicked in in on your phone there. It sounds like a Mr. Roboto, but yeah, Corey, good joke. Kid Rock's pet dog is Pet Rock. He got it. Have a great day. And maybe somebody out there can tell me what just happened with Corey's audio. Is that a Kodak mismatch? Sounds like a massive case of PAC etl.
Speaker C: W6GZ.
Speaker A: Now, definitely wasn't packet loss. It was the entirety of it. There was another comment.
Speaker C: I think like you said, brian, we opened the crypt. N6ems.
Speaker A: And Corey climbed out of the crypt. Okay, very good. Yeah, Corey, you might want to restart your note there. Something very odd happened with your audio there. Good morning. All right. KJ5 Golf, whiskey, November. Good morning, Will. What do you have for the Net?
Speaker D: Well, never hearing any of Kid Rock music. I'm not surprised. Of course, TVN is doing a lot of weird things Lately, So it doesn't surprise me there either. It's 37 degrees here, going up to a high of 51. So it's, it is going to get a little bit warmer today. And so anyway, nothing much here. I'm going to send it back to you and Annette. Brian, this is KJ5 Golf Whiskey November. All right.
Speaker A: Will you have a wonderful day ahead and thanks for checking in this morning. And yeah, definitely looking forward to a great super bowl on Sunday. It should be a fun one for sure. KJ5 Golf Whiskey November AI6 US Coffee Breaknet and let's check in with Mark. KC8FQV. Good morning.
Speaker E: All right. Yeah, KCF kv.
Speaker D: Yeah,
Speaker E: this one was at zero. Oh wow. It is up. It's almost like, well, I guess it's 25 maybe. So it's getting up there. Everything's going good. Yeah, you know, it's almost like a DMR or something. It was something. It definitely no packet loss. It was something got got tangled up. So other than that, not much else are happening. I'll just send it back to the net and we'll see what else is happening for the day around here.
Speaker A: All right, Mark. Yeah, definitely some Kodak got twisted around there. I, I don't think I had ever heard that. It was like slow motion but in perfect time, like a sampling rate issue. It was bizarre. Good morning to you. All right. Zero degrees overnight and warmed up to a balmy 25. You have a wonderful day, Mark 7:3. Let's head on up to Grass Valley. Good morning, Graydon. KC6SOLE. All three of our techs that we that were in our class Monday night, I received notice overnight. They all have, all three have received their licenses. So Jeff is K06MGA, Sam is K06MGC and Steve is K06MIGRAMS. So there we go. So that was fast service by the fcc.
Speaker C: Well, congratulations to them again and kudos to the FCC for being back on the game. It's nice to get licenses in the hands of new hamps as quickly as possible and get them on the air. Their call signs are pretty close to being in sequence.
Speaker A: ABC yes, indeed, in sequence. So yeah, we'll look forward to seeing if they maybe all three of them got an HT after the exam was over. So we'll see if maybe they're able to hop on the air today. So look forward to hearing these new call signs. Well, good morning, Graydon. What do you have for us this morning?
Speaker C: You know, Brian, I have found over the Years in quite a few trips around the sun that the Super Bowls, where I do not have any vested
Speaker A: interest in the teams, tend to be
Speaker C: some of the more enjoyable for a number of reasons. One is I don't have a stake in the game, really. I can just enjoy good football, and hopefully it is good football. But the other is I can switch allegiance.
Speaker A: I can switch teams in the middle. So you're saying that my mistake this morning was actually rooting for the Seahawks. I should have stayed neutral till it was pretty much decided. Okay, lesson learned, Graydon. I'll learn from the master here.
Speaker C: We were in Concord. We had a Super bowl party one time, and I know one of the teams that was playing was the Cowboys. I don't remember who they were playing at the time, but a good friend of mine is from Texas, he was attending, and he was rooting for the Cowboys. I was rooting for the other team, and at halftime, the other team was just getting the, you know, what kicked out of them. So I went upstairs and put my cowboy boots on, my cowboy pants, my cowboy shirt, my cowboy hat, and I came down the stairs. And when I was in view of everybody, I said, how about them boys?
Speaker A: Okay? And then the party got started. Very good. No Super Bowl. I, you know, I grew up in the. In the Washington, and, you know, living down here, you know, I just. I don't know, split allegiance in a way. But, you know, I think once a Hawk fan, always a Hawk fan deep down inside, you know, we went through some painful years with them. Anyway, Graydon, let's see. Super bowl gonna be just. Are you gonna be watching the game at all?
Speaker E: I don't know.
Speaker C: The Olympics are gonna be on. I don't know how that's going to coordinate, whether. I'm pretty sure the Olympics are gonna be on one channel, football game is gonna be on another. We talked about it at dinner last night. In the general cons around the table was the Olympics take priority because once every four years and don't have anything really invested in the Super Bowl.
Speaker A: What I find interesting about the Olympics this year, you know, usually going into the Olympics, there's a lot of name recognition on different people participating. And of course, you know, really, the only thing, the only news I ever heard was about Lindsay, you know, falling during one of her last runs before the Olympics. And now she's going to be in. But beyond that, really don't know, you know, who the people are this year in the Olympics. So I'm going to be watching. I think Winter Olympics definitely My favorite of winter and summer. Definitely enjoy the winter. Well, good morning to you, Graydon. So, yes, I might be flicking between channels on Sunday.
Speaker C: There was. I just caught the tail end of it. But there was a controversy yesterday about one of the. I think it's called racing. The ones where the individual racers down through the icy. I'm not calling rotating, but solemn trail made of ice where they're laying flat on their stomach looking straight ahead. Controversy involving one of the American team that got squeezed out by some political move on the part of the Canadian. You know, it's unfortunate. Politics have to enter into everything.
Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. One thing you absolutely have to watch. I know you're not a big SNL fan, but I caught it on YouTube. You know, YouTube, you can go on there and look up just the individual skits. And this last weekend they had a skit on introducing the Winter Olympics participants. You know, it's all this, you know, commercial hype about, you know, I'm really looking forward, man, to ripping and shredding and. And they kept going back to the. She was a bobsledder, or maybe she was a skeleton and she didn't want to be there. She was scared to death of the route and. And her coach just kept pushing her down the hill and she would scream the whole. And it was quite funny. You'd get a kick out of it.
Speaker C: You know, I think the bobsled itself is scary enough. I don't know if I would do that. But the skeletons, the ones that go down face first, flat on their stomach staring at a wall of ice, I couldn't do that. I mean, if you impact that at the speeds they're going, it's pretty much all over. So kudos to them. Anyway, I better let you get back to the net. Lisa and I are heading over to Reno this morning, so tomorrow I'll be able to give a snow report on the coffee break net. I think Beta would be running it tomorrow, but we'll be going over the path in a few hours and I'll do a snow survey for the vehicle at about 60 miles an hour.
Speaker A: Well, very good.
Speaker B: Yes.
Speaker A: Jeff came on yesterday, K6BSY, and had mentioned that, you know, there is snow up there, two major storms, but I tend to agree there isn't the depth that we would expect or hope to see at this time of year. Graydon, you have a wonderful day and we'll look forward to your snow report manana. KC6SL8AI6US GO Hawks
Speaker C: 73 made the best team win.
Speaker A: KC6SLA and I will choose that right before the end of the game. Have a great day. Good morning, Ray. KK 6am hopefully we've given you a chance to wake up.
Speaker F: I'm not sure about that, to be honest with you. Wait, why am I. Oh, I give up on this crap on Facebook.
Speaker A: Yeah, it's always somebody else's crap on Facebook. Never anything that you or I post.
Speaker F: Well, in my case, I never do. In fact, probably the only reason I actually have an account is to occasionally look at the pictures for this group.
Speaker A: Oh, and I'm sure to follow things that your daughter is up to as well. You know, it's quite interesting, isn't it? Social media was supposed to improve our communications and, you know, bring us all to the table and have civil conversations. Yeah, that worked out well. There's a social experiment for you. All right, Ray, I'm afraid to ask. What ticked you off about Facebook today?
Speaker F: Some kind of friend request from a doctor in Roseville. It's like, this is stupid.
Speaker A: Oh, I hate when your proctologists. Yeah, yeah, I, I. Anyway, yeah, it's nice to see them in a professional sense, but you invited them into your personal life now.
Speaker F: Well, I have to admit, Christina is not a Facebook person either. She did have a MySpace account for an awful lot of years and she kind of had the feeling. Same feeling I did when Facebook came out. This, like, stuff and crap was just too cutesy for us.
Speaker A: You know, I joined Facebook for two reasons. My daughter was on it at the time, and it was a way at the time that we were promoting business. And, you know, I haven't put a business post on my business account in probably two years now. And yet, you know, a couple times a day I'll spend way too much time scrolling. It is a total waste of time. And I keep saying I'm going to quit. Kind of like my taxes. I keep putting it off, though.
Speaker F: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You pay your taxes when you sell your snowmobile?
Speaker A: No, my taxes get paid every year. I just never sell the snowmobile. I know. Well, Ray, good morning to you. My advice, don't become friends with the doctor.
Speaker F: For the most part, I don't. Although I discovered an interesting thing about my primary care physician. I mentioned something about being a ham and he says, do you know what my call was? And he actually lapsed 20 years ago. I think life got in the way, but it was kind of interesting. Normally you mention it and people like, what's that? Nope, he knows exactly what it is
Speaker A: and he still remembered his call. So he must have been active with it. Well and then that probably brought up a lot of inter conversations. It always does when you find something in common. Ray have a wonderful day. KK6am AI6US and yeah, you sound awake now.
Speaker F: 73 KK6am 73 right.
Speaker A: Clearing with KK6am and good morning to Robert Ko6KMR.
Speaker G: Well, good morning.
Speaker A: I just want to give a quick
Speaker G: update on my HF journey and the plot thickens here on that journey. First of all, once again I want to thank Graydon Hicks for sending out
Speaker A: getting a hold of Gilbert.
Speaker G: Mr. Gilbert and Burton came out yesterday, spent about three hours at the house, checked for all sorts of static and came to the conclusion that I didn't have an excess static problem. Set up his gear in the backyard, made contacts in Utah and different locations and sounded real good. Came into the house, plugged it into the house, used the antenna that I had wire set up and he ran it to an outside antenna that he had and made great contacts. So we came to the conclusion that there's not a problem, so just don't
Speaker A: know what to think over. Well, were you observing the same interference you had checked in a few weeks ago on the Elmer Net and we had talked about that you were experiencing a high noise level at your house with a temporary setup that had been loaned to you. So yesterday were you hearing the same interference that you heard before or is there a possibility that the equipment that you had before might have been, you know, a bad power supply or something with the radio itself? What do you think?
Speaker D: Well, just not sure.
Speaker G: But I did not hear the same static level at all. And like I say, there was quite a bit of action going on and we did hear several locations and so, you know, we really didn't know what what to think. But the only thing is is he thinks I might ought to get a little bit better cable to run in on the HF side. And other than that I think I'm set to.
Speaker A: Start by looking for HF transceiver, over.
Speaker B: Well, that is so awesome. Three hours with Burton. You know, he's a very educated person. He used to do work on our repeater system up here. And I actually own a couple pieces of gear that used to belong to Burton. Definitely a very knowledgeable guy. And spend three hours with them. I'm sure it was a wealth of information. So now you're probably going to be possibly looking for, well, of course, new coax cable. But now I believe, I think next you are going to start researching and figuring out what radio you want, right?
Speaker C: Yes, sir.
Speaker A: That's exactly what I'm going to start doing. And probably in the next month or so I'm going to get the extra license first, probably and go ahead and just spend all my time doing that. Then after that's solidified, I'll probably buy me a HF radio and that'll give me time actually to review the HF
Speaker B: radio that I do buy.
Speaker A: So probably a couple of months or so over.
Speaker B: Oh, very good. Don't know if you want to buy new or used, but I gotta say, the, the newer radios that are out on the market with their noise canceling and noise manipulation, you know, there have been some really big changes in radio design and you know, even though the old radios still work great, they definitely do not mitigate noise as well as the newer ones. And I gotta say, you know, I own a FTDX 10 others own like the, the FT1 Optimum. You know, there are so many different paths to go. The new 7300 Mark II. A lot of these radios out there just have wonderful, wonderful capabilities and you know, just. Yeah, I'm glad to hear you're going to take your time and kind of see what is the best fit for you. Well, Robert, excellent, great news and definitely thank you to Graydon for helping set that up. And I am so glad that you got some time with Burton. He is one heck of a knowledge base.
Speaker A: Yeah, no doubt about it. He gave me ideas on antennas and coax and all sorts of things over.
Speaker B: You know, that is the best type of Elmer to have. Well, I think you probably received some good advice and definitely, you know, that's why we're out here. We have different nets and of course we're out here, you know, pretty much throughout the day. So if you have any questions, many of us are more than willing to help. Have a wonderful day. Robert, anything else for the net before I let you go?
Speaker A: No, just thank everybody that helped me through this journey and I'm going to sign it back over to you Kilo Oscar six Kilo Mike Romeo and I'm
Speaker B: going to just listen for a while.
Speaker C: Over.
Speaker B: All right Robert, Happy Wednesday to you and thanks for checking in this morning and yeah, we'll interest in following along and seeing what what you come up with for your for your first HF radio. Good morning clearing with K06KMR. I'm Brian Ai6us and this is the coffee breaknet on the W6ek repeater and just want to welcome everybody to the net this morning and just remind you the days before we start taking regular check ins here. Today is World Cancer Day promoting awareness about prevention, detection and treatment. And so hopefully this is, this is something that can be eradicated in our lifetime. Just suffering and the impact that it has on people's lives. Today is World Read Aloud Day. The art of reading stories out loud Thank a mail carrier day. So maybe, maybe if you have a carrier come up to your door or out to your box today, an extra smile and a wave and thank them for delivering. In ice and snow and sunburns in California, today is sweater day. Do you have a favorite sweater? Ah yes, sweater day, Stuffed mushroom day and homemade soup day. Maybe you have a favorite homemade soup that you want to share the recipe on. Good morning. I'm Brian AI6us. This is the Coffee breaknet and let's take some check ins. If you want to be in and out and get on your way please let me know you want to be in and out. We'll put you at the top of the list for check ins. So good morning. Welcome to the Coffee breaknet. Taking check ins. Kilo Oscar 6 Charlie, Oscar whiskey Mobile.
Speaker D: Quick in and out.
Speaker E: This is Kiloco Nine Alpha Whiskey Yankee, Kilo Echo Nine Alpha Whiskey Yankee, Rachel Tinley Park, Illinois in and out please.
Speaker C: N5t I n in and out.
Speaker E: Your radio is on the right frequency. This is the home of sac Valley's original 105 W6 GRC with a PL tone of 110.9.
Speaker B: All right. Good morning Steve. N5 Tin for In N Out. We'll be back to you in a moment. And good morning to Dan KN6WQU. Dan, you were in the middle of a kerfuffle. Were you in and out or going to hang around for some RAG2 today?
Speaker F: I'm sorry, I'm going to quicken it out. Thank you very much.
Speaker B: All right, Dan, have you down as a quick in and out. Good morning to. Let's see, WB6BJN Mark. And good morning to Rachel KE9AWY for In n Out. Good morning to John K06COW for In n out. I believe I missed a few people. There was quite a pile up. See, looks like we had a key up. Coming From Orland from W6GRC Repeater, who's checking in from Northern Cal, Wd6lpj mobile. So N9MUF, you're in Northern California. And WB6LPJ is also coming in. Good morning. All right, anyone else that I missed to get on the list here? Oh, and let me check. Don. WB6LPJ. Are you in and out or gonna hang around? Sorry. Yes, in and out.
Speaker D: Thank you.
Speaker B: All right, be back to you in a few minutes. All right, let me just double check. Did I miss anyone who was trying to check in? But you didn't make it through the fuzzle? Kb6ed. All right, ed.kb6ed. And are you hanging around to rag two or in and out S?
Speaker F: Oh, I'm just.
Speaker B: I'm gonna plan on taking up all
Speaker C: the rest of the net.
Speaker B: Could I expect any less from you? All right. Good morning. All right, let's visit first with our quick in and outs. Good morning, John Ko6cow.
Speaker E: Thanks, Brian.
Speaker D: And everybody on the net. This is John Ko6cow. I'm mobile right now, eastbound 80, getting off Sierra College Boulevard. I'm gonna take my dog up to walk with his best friend who lives in Lincoln. And we kind of do dog sitting, trading off duty. So it's kind of good to get the dogs together. But wanted to let you know, Fox Hunt the other day was excellent. And Jaden has a project he's got
Speaker B: to do at school.
Speaker D: And now he wants to build an arrow antenna. And I told him, just don't use a 4x4 fence post, please.
Speaker B: You know, I'll just hand it to your son. He definitely builds yagi antennas that are robust and probably would outlast roaches after a nuclear holocaust. No, and I don't know if you knew this, but you can actually use aluminum arrows. That is the basis for the arrow antenna. So if you buy aluminum arrows, they do have the threaded insert in them already. Just cut them to length.
Speaker D: Yeah, that's kind of what I was hinting to him. But you know Jayden. Yeah, he does build things robust and kind of from scratch.
Speaker B: And, you know, the bigger the better.
Speaker D: But it's a good idea, I think,
Speaker B: for his high school, they have to
Speaker D: do a personal project a couple a year and that's his next one. He wants to Build an aero antenna and probably try to talk to a satellite, demonstrate it to the school or, you know, Fox Hunt, whatever. But yeah, it'd be a good project. We'll be working on that shortly.
Speaker B: Well, we certainly had fun. Glad you could make it out for the Fox Hunt this last Saturday. And yeah, it was a tough one to find. If I had not driven a grid and just happened to take the right road, I probably would have still been driving around looking for it. John, have a wonderful day. Thanks for checking in and you and your pop, enjoy the walk.
Speaker D: Thanks so much. Brian73 have a good day. Q06 cow clear
Speaker B: all right, clearing with John and good morning Rachel for a quick in and out. Ke9awi, I think you said still in Illinois.
Speaker E: This is kilo at a 09 Alpha Whiskey Yankee, Finley Park, Illinois. I'll be here for a couple more days. My boyfriend's roof is falling apart so hopefully we'll get there soon, figure out what needs to be done. So that's that. Well, my stomach is growling for breakfast. I'm keeping this short or doing in and out because don't know when my ex will wake up and we're gonna do some breakfast. Supposed to do breakfast and leave, but that's not going to be the case today. I'm working out on an exercise bike and yeah, we'll see what's going on and how things play out and I'm sure it'll go well. Trying to get rid of the last of this cold. What else is new? Well, with the days at least. I know a lot of cancer people who died of cancer and that's very unfortunate. My aunt did, my uncle did, a bunch of friends did and it's a sad process. Some died very early. I had a friend who died and didn't make it to his birthday, so. But yeah, he'd be 61 in a couple of days if he was still alive, but. And my favorite soup is the Chinese Hong Kong bourst soup. The. We call it Los Ang. So yeah, or Lao Tseon Tong or whatever, however you transliterate it. But it's very tasty, kind of like a bourst soup, but it's Hong Kong style. So anyway, that is me. Yeah,
Speaker B: A Hong Kong version of borsc's soup. Interesting. I. I'll have to look that up and see what that is. I don't think I've run across it. Well, good morning to you. Hopefully you get over the cold soon and enjoy your last few days there in Illinois before you come head back out to Your final destination there. KE9AWY AI6US. Yes, indeed. A lot of us have been impacted by cancer, and I'd sure like to see a lot more research and focus on that because it is, it definitely impacts many of our lives. Ke9awy ai6us.
Speaker C: You have a great day.
Speaker B: Rachel 7:3.
Speaker E: Yeah, we sure have. If we can obliterate that, that'd be great. I also know a lot of us have been impacted by the cold, so stay safe and well, everybody. And, yep, we'll see what happens before I move up to Wisconsin. So, yeah, and look it up. It's a very tasty soup. Lots of vegetables and some pork, I think. So Lots of potatoes, too. Anyway, 73 everybody. And have a nice morning there in California or wherever you are. Afternoon almost for some people. All right, 73 from K9AWI, Tilly Park, Illinois, for now. Back to that.
Speaker B: All right. Happy Wednesday, Rachel. KE9AWYAI6 Good morning, Dan. KN6WQ. You have a very happy customer from yesterday who now can run 2kW in his van.
Speaker F: Good morning, Brian and Annette. This is KN6WQ. Yeah, got to sleep in a little bit this morning. Heather stayed the night over at her mom's with, with our daughter.
Speaker B: She's in from the, the, the boat,
Speaker F: the one that's on, the one that's in the Navy, so she's in. So I had to spend some time with her.
Speaker C: So that's good.
Speaker B: I just do what I do, make money.
Speaker F: So this morning, we're trying to ramp up the air conditioner kind of like, kind of evenly, you know, like Change it like 3 degrees here and there and try to bring it up to temperature we want. So. Because I think what was going on is we were just calling it way
Speaker C: too fast, way too quick, and was
Speaker F: trying to, trying to accommodate, you know, I think it should do that. But, you know, we're still testing, making sure that everything works right and try to get some data before we start calling them. Call Mr. Bravo back and find out what's wrong with these things. Anyway, let's see. Yeah, went and seen Tom yesterday. Drove all the way up to Auburn and come to find out he didn't have any parts up there for his car because it's a unique vehicle. So we drove all the way back down to Sacramento to Del Paso Heights, and, and El Paso and El Camino.
Speaker B: O'Reilly's there.
Speaker F: We got him all fixed up right there in the parking lot, changed all his wires out, changed all kinds of things and got Them all nice and powered and so he can take care of the things he needs to take care of. So odd thing though, the coolant temperature sensor decided it didn't want to work and then this morning he texted me
Speaker B: and said it works.
Speaker C: So I don't know.
Speaker B: You know, it is what it is.
Speaker F: I didn't even touch the stupid thing,
Speaker C: but it is what it is.
Speaker F: Anyway, let's see another day off to work to me, but that's about it. This is Gan6wq.
Speaker D: All right.
Speaker B: Yeah, I know you were trying to. Trying to get that split unit installed and doing dyi and it just definitely sounds like one of those things where I know you're going to save money in the end. But boys, that definitely sounds like a frustrating process for you so far. Wishing you well on that. Kn6wquai6us I'll just share with you. The sun is out, blue skies. It is a beautiful day in Metavista. Hopefully you'll get some of that down in the valley. 73 Dan.
Speaker F: Apparently it's supposed to be 66 today, so it's definitely going to be that case. 73 Brian. Thanks for running that everybody.
Speaker B: Have a wonderful day. Yeah. Almost time to pull out the sunscreen. You have a wonderful day. Hey, good morning. Let's see. Up next will be Steve N5 Tin. Good morning, Steve. Hey, good morning, Brian.
Speaker C: AI6 US N5 Tin here. Beautiful day here in Central Texas. Blue skies, a little cool in the 50s breeze blowing. But it's just a gorgeous day and it's a good day for me. I was able to rid myself of the appendage the doctor gave me during the surgery a couple weeks ago. So I am able to move around freely again, which is a great thing. And I'm having a little fun out in the workshop. I'm getting ready to
Speaker B: see if I
Speaker C: can set up the CNC to cut apart.
Speaker B: All right. What kind of CNC machine or what type of CNC design stuff do you do?
Speaker C: Well, I built one. I guess I started on it a couple years ago and it's been a long running project, so. So a number of the components for it are actually printed on a 3D printer. And the remainder, mostly things you could get at the hardware store with a few items from Amazon.
Speaker B: It's not very big.
Speaker C: This is sort of just a fun project for me and an educational one. I'm learning an awful lot.
Speaker B: Okay, what size projects and what materials can your CNC machine handle? Very interesting. And did you start with the basics of a mechanical CNC and then adapt it over for automation. Or tell me a bit more, if you wouldn't mind.
Speaker E: Yeah.
Speaker C: In terms of materials, from my reading, the one that I built is probably capable of handling definitely wooden materials and also some thin metal, thin aluminum, maybe something up to, I don't know, I guess maybe a quarter inch or so. And it's the one I have at has a work area that's a little on the small side in the Y axis. I think it maxes out at about 24 inches. And across X, it's a little bit less. It's maybe 19, something like that. And today I'm actually doing a test. I'm going to cut a piece of foam, just a foam sheet, just as a way to test it to see if it's doing what I think it's going to do.
Speaker A: That sounds like an interesting project and probably a lot of it is going through materials, using inexpensive materials to calibrate and such. But a very cool project and yeah, built out of self sourced parts. That's pretty cool. Well, Steve, good luck with your project today and I'm glad to hear you're out and about and in recovery and sounds like the tether was removed, so continued recovery.
Speaker B: Well, thank you for that and I'm happy too.
Speaker A: You know, living with a catheter for a couple weeks is no fun. Well, at least you were able not to take relieve yourself without checking the direction of the wind. That's a good one. The inconvenience though is the attached plastic bag that follows you everywhere.
Speaker C: Yeah, not very attractive when wearing short
Speaker A: pants, that's for sure. Hey, we got to make light of it. You're free of it now, Steve. Have a wonderful day. N5 Tin AI6 US coffee break. You have a great day. Okay Brian, thanks again. Talk to you soon. AI6US N5TIN73 Good morning Don. WB6LPJ it sounded like you're out and about mobile somewhere. Good morning.
Speaker C: Good morning Brian down here in Granite Bay. Hope you're copying. Okay, off to a bicycle ride down here in Folsom this morning and just wanted to update on young Samuel from the VE session on Monday. He's remaining tightly cuddled IQ to me and hopefully I might be hearing from him today for probably, possibly a call sign.
Speaker A: Well, yes, Sam got his call sign. In fact, all three techs got their call sign assigned to them last night. So they jumped right on that and got that prepayment made. And so yeah, all three of the techs got their call sign last night and Samuel's call sign is K06 Mike Golf Charlie.
Speaker C: That's a great one to start and hopefully he'll hang on to it for a while. And I do have a handheld and a J pole that I'm going to be delivering to him potentially before the,
Speaker A: before the end of the week.
Speaker C: So yep, I know he's pretty excited. I'm kind of surprised I haven't heard from him. But anyway, hey, I'll let you go. Not sure about the range down here, but yep, off to a bicycle ride, get a little exercise.
Speaker A: Thanks for doing the net everybody. Have a great day. Thanks Brian.
Speaker C: WB6 LBJ mobile.
Speaker A: Nope, solid into the repeater. The only way I knew that, a little background noise from the truck there, but yeah, solid copy. Well, of course he had won a H or we had gifted him an ht which we have the local repeaters programmed into it for the Sacramento area. I program those in and put a simplex frequency on there as well. So yeah, he will be ht. Rich Don, have a wonderful day. Enjoy that bike ride and definitely do not leave anyone behind.
Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker A: Nope, that's fine. Yeah, I wasn't aware that you program
Speaker C: pre programmed that radio for him because he told me he was able to monitor the W6ek repeater. And I'm sitting next to Doug with a bicycle on the back of his car. So I guess he's going to join
Speaker A: us for the ride.
Speaker C: Anyway, thanks again.
Speaker A: Have a great day.
Speaker C: WB6LPJ mobile.
Speaker A: Oh my, the bike gang is getting together.
Speaker C: Watch out.
Speaker A: You know, I know the path you're riding on. I used to walk and ride that path myself down by Natomas. And watch out for the cougars, especially the ones in Lycra. Have a great day. 7 3. See you there. Don. WA6 Eric. Well, good thing you guys have electric bikes and hopefully somebody brought their tow rope along. Have a great ride, guys. Good morning. Let's see. Clearing with WB6LPJ. Let's head on up now. Let me double check. WB6BJN. Are you short on time or can we fit Daniel and Ed before you? Just checking.
Speaker B: Well, let's see. My net starts at 11:30 so I. If we can get me out before 11:30, I think we, we can do that.
Speaker A: We're. We're good. And
Speaker B: There you go.
Speaker A: WB6BJN. Well, if Daniel and Ed take up more than an more than a half an hour, we're. We're all in trouble. Hey, let's check in first then. Thank you, Mark. Let's check in first within 9 MUF. Good morning, Daniel.
Speaker B: Good morning, Brian and Vinnette. My apologies for cutting in on the Northern California check in. I thought it was a general who was who got dropped in the kerfuffle and I hadn't heard my call sign, so. My apologies, Brian.
Speaker C: Yeah, no problem.
Speaker A: No, we have a new repeater online that covers Northern California, the W6 GRC repeater. And I saw that light up and so I just was checking to see if anyone was trying to check in from that repeater. Good to have coverage all the way up to the Oregon border, so.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker A: Good morning N9 MUF. Has springtime sprung?
Speaker B: Well, we had melted snow yesterday and you know, it looked like some parts of the lawn were clearing off and we're back to gray skies and miserable and dropped about 10 degrees. So no, I would say spring is definitely not Sprung here in Chicagoland.
Speaker A: Well, hopefully that weather is not restricting your movement and it's been a while since you've done a poda, so I don't know, I'm just going to play devil's advocate there. Going to be out doing a PODA soon.
Speaker B: I've been twitching. Yesterday the weather was good enough that if I had made the plans to do it, I probably would have gone and done the poda, but it hadn't been part of my setup for the day. So I've got to keep an eye on it and hopefully next Monday I'll get out.
Speaker A: Alrighty. Well, we'll look forward to maybe getting you on another band. It's always fun to work somebody, you know, especially working out of the park there. Very good looking at the VOCAP is looking wonderful for today. You know, it looks like right about now everything 20. 20 meters? Yeah, 20 meters through 10. Just look like they are all. All doing pretty good coverage this morning. So. Yeah, a little noisy, but yeah, looks like you might have some good conditions for that. Well, Daniel, what do you have going on today? Any projects, anything you want to share?
Speaker B: Just running varnesday already got my email sent off and if the gentleman who was asking about VAR wasn't able to hook up with you, I'd also be available as a contact for VAR. For that matter, anything digital.
Speaker A: Yeah, that was Jim N6 Med. I think we're. He may still be asleep. He seems to join the net towards the end. Let's see if Jim is around. N6MED. Jim, are you monitoring. That resounding snore? Probably confirms. No, he doesn't sound like he's on. But yes, in fact he was posting on the Varic website website with his questions and so yeah, Jim N6 Med was having some questions about it. I downloaded the latest VARA modem and VAR AC and my gosh, does. Does the creator ever sleep? It's actually getting to be so much of a Swiss knife that I am starting to lose focus on it.
Speaker B: Very understandable. It seems like something new is added every week and for the most part I just tend to run it on Wednesday since I've gone down the CW rabbit hole. But it's absolutely enjoyable. I am good on qrz, so if you would want to maybe reach out by email, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
Speaker A: Yeah, I haven't set up anything to be, you know, to handle email or anything. I just need to do some deep dive into it and. And set up some email and. And learn about, you know, the last thing I want to do is game on amateur radio, but I was reading that gaming has been added to it now. I. I think I favor the game of solitaire when it comes to amateur radio.
Speaker B: If they would have chess, that would actually be a cool implementation. Yeah.
Speaker A: And that could be played over. Over time. Yeah, I agree. That might be interesting. Well, very good. Yes. I know you are quite the resource for var ac. Thank you for the offer. And I will definitely extend that over to Jim as well. He's kind of like me. You know, we got into it several. Both got into it like two, three years ago when it first was popular and launched. And, you know, I have not been keeping up with it regularly. And, you know, every time I get in there every couple, two, three months, it's just like, you know, it's a whole new, you know, a lot of changes. So it's kind of hard to follow unless you're really on top of it. But. But it definitely is a developing tool for E comm and just for communications in general. Well, good morning. And your cw. Your CW say you're going down that path. So I know you were tuning up a key last week.
Speaker B: And got the paddle hooked up. I've got it hooked up to V band right now. So getting used to still using the key on the radio, but starting to learn how to use a panel.
Speaker A: Well, I have one sitting in front of me, mocking me as we speak. Definitely an art to it. And I think the plexiglass cover is going to stay on it.
Speaker B: I really come to appreciate VBAN because they always talk about, well, if you learn how to receive, you'll be able to send. And that's not quite the case. There's a certain touch to a straight key and of course, between various straight keys and touch to a paddle as well. And I. So the opportunity to be able to practice the sending portion and get feedback on whether or not what you're sending makes any actual sense, I think is a really, really wonderful gift to the amateur radio community. And it's definitely worth the cost of the adapter.
Speaker A: You know, V band was something that wu6x Dennis had told me about several years ago, and he has used it with others, and I really haven't followed it much since then. What is cost of the adapter? And of course, this is an adapter, basically a USB to. I think it's a 3.5 millimeter, so you can plug any key or paddle into it. But what is the cost of that adapter?
Speaker B: It's $25 and it shows up on your computer as a keyboard. I had to make some adaptations. I'm a big fan of Carabiner on my back because I grew up using a VT100 and VT320 terminal. So my left hand needs my ALT and my control keys in a certain place. And they were very helpful. We sorted out the issue. I got an exception into Carabiner for, for the Mac and it works absolutely fine. But they'll be for that $25 they'll take sends you the adapter and a data cable as well. It's a USB C out, by the way.
Speaker A: Okay, yeah, let me look that, Let me look that up. The USB C adapter. So is that instead of a USB usb, I think that used to be on it. It's now a USB C port and then a cable solution instead of a direct plugin.
Speaker B: Correct. And I've just got it fairly permanently hooked up to my Mac so I can reach for the panel anytime I feel like I want to practice.
Speaker A: So it's been a while since I've talked about VBand, but do you find that there's usually somebody hanging around for a practice qso or do you just go on there and kind of self practice using the tools on there?
Speaker B: What I've been doing is just setting up in the practice channel. They've got a QSO bot now that'll do an automated QSO with you. But for me, the practice channel has been what I wanted to do. It's been great if I had to fine tune key and just, you know, send something repeatedly, obviously something you wouldn't want to do on the air. But I find it's very good for practice and very good for any time you need to tweak a key or a paddle.
Speaker A: Having a discussion with somebody a couple years ago about hooking your paddle or your key up to a scope so you could observe skipping jitter, that sort of thing. And something I never really thought about. But then it was like, of course, you know, any switch, you can measure the chatter, the jitter on it, and it tells you a lot about how you're operating your key. And I thought, what a great way to use a scope.
Speaker B: Oh, that's an absolutely excellent way to use a scope. My son actually asked if he needed, needed to give the oscillator back to me since my original Elmer got it for me from radio shack, what, 45 years ago. And I said, hang on to the key, Hang on to the oscillator and if you said you're interested in cw, and I'm more than happy to.
Speaker A: Very cool. Well, maybe you'll have a new CW partner in the pipeline there. Well, Daniel, good morning to you, and, yeah, thanks for the conversation about V Band. That was something that's kind of had flown off my radar and a nice, nice change. I like that. It's kind of a standalone device. And, you know, with the USB cable, I think it gives a little more flexibility. And one thing I remembered was some people in the past had a little trouble with RFI getting in and messing with their computer. So this might be a great way to isolate that a little bit better as well. All right, Daniel, good morning to you.
Speaker B: Anything else for the Net? Just hearing everybody talking about World Cancer Day and thinking about it. My aunt got breast cancer, and she was in Hawaii with her husband. He was stationed there, Air Force, and she wanted to fly back to the US For a visit. We had had a death in the family. And she tried to convince her oncologist that, you know, if she was okay. And she said, well, my brother said I could fly. And the oncologist was, who's your brother? And she mentioned my uncle's name. And she. The oncologist paused and she said, well, if your brother says you can go, then you can go. And we hadn't really realized what the name. He was in medicine until that occurrence.
Speaker A: So what is the connection? If you would like to share,
Speaker B: he is. He was head of oncology at Radio Oncology at Mayo Clinic. And when she finally did pass cancer, it came back again very aggressively several years later. And everybody in the community was a. And he said something to us all that I'll never forget. And I think it's always something to keep in mind in dealing with these kind of things. He said, you all got seven years with her. That given the aggressiveness of her cancer, you shouldn't have had. She survived seven years more than she should have. And instead of grumbling about the fact that you. You didn't live, you need to be thankful for the miracle of those additional seven years. And that's something that. That insight from him was something I've never forgotten. And I think when dealing with things that are life threatening, remembering to be grateful for the days that we're given as we deal with it,
Speaker A: Certainly a wonderful way to look at that. We lost Lynn's mom to cancer that metastasized, but it was a type of cancer that could be addressed by some gene therapy. And, well, you know, she was given about five more years of good quality.
Speaker A: Life. You know, definitely there are improvements being made and things that are allowing people to have good quality life for a number of years beyond. So what a great thank you for sharing that because yes, even as a survivor that is something you exit this with or live with is the for the time that you do have. And Lyn of course continues to to live kind of in fear of it when it will return. She said it's not if, it's when. And so we are thankful for, for every day that we have. So definitely thanks for sharing that. Absolutely. Thanks Daniel.
Speaker B: I think the other thing that struck me as he said that as I was watching him talk about he had sit and talked about how she had had a cancer where there's a 95% survival rate and she fell into the 5% that didn't make it and how hard it must have been on him. Being a world renowned expert in a field and not being able to do anything to save your own sister and yet be able to look on the gift of the additional seven years as positive and be the wisdom and calmness from him was something I will absolutely never forget.
Speaker A: You know, and I just look up to people who battle and come out on top well even if they don't. Just the battle that cancer puts people through. And I just often wonder if I would have the same strength that I have seen others exhibit. And yes, it is a choice and we certainly are grateful for that time that we are given.
Speaker C: Thanks dan.
Speaker A: Appreciate that. N9 MUF AI6 US Coffee Break.
Speaker B: Always a pleasure to check in with you. I'll be off this afternoon to check out a hotel for windycon. Well the new hotel we've already signed the contract but hopefully can scout out what we can do for whiskey 9 whiskey this year. So hopefully I'll be able to work you all come October seven three to
Speaker D: you in the net. Brian.
Speaker B: N9 MUF
Speaker A: just an observation. A lot of whiskey in that call clearing with Daniel. N9 NUF Good Morning Ed. KB6 Ed what do you have for the net this morning?
Speaker D: Good morning Brian and Annette. Just sorry to do this to you but I was delivered the most beautiful breakfast right here. I got a, I got an egg scramble with some Swiss chard through it and big old slice of, oh and some cheese and I got a big old slice of sourdough with some beautiful avocado spread over it that I'm just enjoying here. Anyway, I just wanted to throw out that I'm actually the opposite of Graydon when I don't have any allegiance to a team, and I'm halfway through the game, I turn and start rooting for the underdog. I love a good comeback. Used to love watching Tom Brady with his comebacks. I haven't been a big sports fan or football fans through the years. Don't really watch the teams during the season, but enjoy the Super Bowl. And so anyway, also, I did root for the Chiefs when Mahomes was doing all that dashing and some of those tricky plays. Really enjoy all that. But halfway through this game, I'll be switching allegiance to whoever's the underdog.
Speaker A: Well, I think you can establish that from the beginning of the game. We already know who the underdog is, so you might as well just remain consistent through the whole game. Anyway. Well, you know, you. It just sounds like you're in an antagonizer and. Definitely.
Speaker C: Good breakfast sounds good.
Speaker A: Is that a rhubarb chard, or. What kind of chard do you have in that omelette?
Speaker D: This particular chard is called Ford Hook and grows some big, huge, beautiful leaves. And the stalks are kind of celery. Like, they don't have the strings through them as much as celery, but it's a tender, delicious stock. Anyway, good stuff. Something I brought from Redwood Valley.
Speaker A: Now, I absolutely love the stock, like on rhubarb, chard, or even beets, you know, give me stock anytime. Absolutely. And saute it up a little bit with a little onion, Some butter even. Gets better. I understand that. If you sprinkle some bacon on top of it, even better. Well, good morning, Ed. Hopefully you had a great Taco Tuesday with your dad. What's on the schedule for today?
Speaker D: Yeah, we're headed right back up there. I had a. I think my dad thought I was in a dental appointment. I was actually just in a review for some labs that I had had, and I've got a. I got to go right back up to Auburn today for a retinal scan. So we're gonna probably have another taco treat somewhere along the way or something. I don't know. Filling up pretty good here right now, but that's later. And so we'll get to some kind of treatment that way. And I. Since I'm ahead of Mark here, I just want to say hi, Mark, Looking forward to the weather report. And. And so back to you, Brian. KV6 CD73.
Speaker A: All right, Ed. Well, I. Yeah. Your dad said you were in the dental chair getting. Getting a procedure done yesterday, so I was looking forward to seeing what you look like with teeth. Ed, you have a wonderful day. And yeah, good luck rooting for the underdog. And you have a wonderful Wednesday ahead. Kb6ed, ai6us73. Let's head on back to tennessee. Wb6bjn. Good morning, mark. What do you have for the net this morning?
Speaker C: Well, I hope Daniel in Illinois is still listening because I have good news. I have good news for everybody that lives east and maybe to the west, too, because the flip in the pattern, I think, is about to happen. But before we get to that, good morning to Ed. Good morning to Glenn, if he's listening. I heard him earlier. And let's see, I had my procedure yesterday, Brian, and everything came out okay. I had a nice nap. Gosh, the stuff they give you now, it's so pleasant, man. I got in the room, they wheeled me down the hall and I said goodbye to Sarah. And because she was my driver going home, of course, but, and they had me all hooked up to stuff and the, the gal that gives me the, the sleep stuff. And she said, they said, well, you'll have a, you might smell something. And when we start this into you and you might have a funny taste in your mouth. And I did. And the next thing I knew, I was waking up and it was done. I had no memory of even going to sleep. I didn't even, I just had that funny smell and taste. And boom, I was gone. And they found three polyps which the doctor believes is, are benign. He said they didn't look like they would. I guess they could sometimes tell if they look at them, but they want to send them off. Let me take a break. Want to send them off to the lab. And he said, if everything is good, you'll get a letter in the mail that will say, come back in five years. And if you, if there's something that they find that they don't like, they might give me a phone call. So I'm hoping for a letter in the mail. And oh, boy, the solar storm headed for Earth may surprise us. I hope. Stefan Burns. I'll talk about that later, too. But anyway, so everything looks good. They want to look at them. And I hope I get a phone call. I mean, I hope I get a letter in the mail instead of a phone call back to you and then we'll, we'll talk about the weather there. Go ahead.
Speaker A: You know, Mark, I don't particularly enjoy hearing about people's procedures, but I have one thing to say, you know, after that, he should send you a dozen roses in a card.
Speaker C: Well, yeah, he, he, he was good. His name, Dr. Dita. And he was good. Very nice. Very nice. All the people there at the hospital were very nice, very kind. And they said, man, you. You're such a positive person. And I said, well, I, you know, that's the way you got to be. And, you know, if they find something, we go. We go take care of it, and hopefully it'll. It'll be okay. If not, then, hey, we'll see him in five years. And that's where my head's at. So I'm thinking positive. There goes.
Speaker A: Oh, man, you just keep giving me comedy gold. Well, we know where his head was at. Back over to you.
Speaker C: Well, anyway, it was all good. Anyway, Let's talk about the weather. Okay, we'll start with California, and we'll work our way eastward. It looks like the flip in the pattern is about to happen. Not yet this week, but I think by Monday, I think by maybe even late Sunday, there could be some rain in far Northern California. Now, the high pressure area, we're in what we call a rex block pattern. And a rex pattern is one where you have low pressure underneath a major ridge of high pressure, and that's kind of centered in Baja. So that as we come closer to Friday, that ridge that's been with you guys for so long is going to start to break down. It's going to start to move eastward, and that's good for us because eventually what that's going to do is put us on the warm side of the Thor as far as storms go, and it's going to build into the Midwest and East. So by Monday, Daniel, if you're listening, the first number might begin with a 4 on your thermometer rather than a 3, 2, or a 1 and that. And then there could be some warmer numbers behind it. So I would start planning for a POTA on Monday, and if everything works out right, so I think that it's going to start to warm up. And there may be some places like down here that it's going to run into the 60s. But for you guys, there could be some welcome rain and maybe some snow as low pressure moves into the west. And so it might get rid of the fog in the valley. Temperatures may cool off, but there's much needed rain and much needed snow for the west, and there's much needed rain for back here, too. And that may happen, but it may be warm and it may be rain instead of snow. But we still have one more arctic air mass to go through back here, and you've got a couple of days of Fog and low clouds in the valley, but some warming in the afternoon. I think as the days are getting longer now that that fog off a little earlier in the day and that's what's going to warm the valley highs into the 60s even though there's denseness night and morning fog today and tomorrow. Let me take a break. Southern California is going to be in the 80s. But most of the offices, even down to Southern California are agreeing that more active weather and cooler weather and maybe some snow for the Sierras as the polar jet takes up residency in the west now. So just the opposite pattern happens for the east. And so the pressure pattern switches. You get a long wave trough in the west and a long wave ridge in the east. So it looks like the nice sunny weather for California might go away. But you get the added thing of rain and snow and some much needed snow in the higher elevations of the Sierras. And I'll send it back to you and then we'll talk more detail about what's going to happen east of the Rockies there. Go ahead.
Speaker A: Okay, Very good. Well, yeah, I'm just wondering how this will impact our friends in Northern California. It sounds like rain. I'm not sure what the intensity of that is going to be or just a chance of precipitation, but yeah, very good. Not sure how that will affect us in a little farther south, but thank you for that alert there. I think it's time to get the COVID back on the rv. Well, what's happening east of the Mississippi?
Speaker C: Good. You talked long enough that the weather finished. It worked out great. I keep forgetting turn that off. But it worked. Thanks for talking longer. I think it will work its way south. This pattern is going to start unfolding really for you guys. Actually on Friday you'll see a decrease. People will see a decrease in fog and low clouds. There'll be more mixing at the surface. It takes a while for high pressure areas to break down. It takes a while to work out of the pattern. So stuff is going to start further north and eventually as the low carves out a trough along the west coast, that opens the door for storms to work into California and eventually into the Rockies and eventually into the middle part of the nation. But what it does, it centers the colder weather over you guys a little more so that you get good snow in the mountains and and also good rain in the valley because you guys are running behind now. It's been a month of persistent high pressure as it's been a month of persistent low pressure in the mid part of the nation. And to the east. And so those patterns, they're all connected. And so what's going to happen for us is, is after an Arctic front goes through, we're going to get some cold weather tonight. There's a couple of clipper systems. And Daniel, you could get some snow tonight and tomorrow and maybe Friday into Saturday. And then we think Sunday is sort of the transition day. Things start to warm up. In fact, Kansas, places like Kansas, Minnesota, the Dakotas are going to start to warm up. That starts to spread further east as low pressure builds into the west and high pressure starts to build into the Midwest and East. Now what happens though, is by next week, the high kind of flattens a little bit. So that that opens the door for more Gulf moisture to start moving northward. And Pacific moisture, because that transfers eastward. So we start working into what would be like an early spring situation. And we have to take a close look at that, because eventually thunderstorms start developing in Texas and Oklahoma, and eventually they could work eastward and be in the mid south into Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky. And so it melts all of our snow. But then we could get into a situation where a severe weather event could set up. And when things start to warm up and if there's any cold air to the north, it starts to interact with that. So that isn't officially in the cards yet, but you start to look at those parameters. They did say that for Tennessee and parts of the mid south, this could be a wet weather pattern, but with warmer temperatures as all this stuff starts to come out of the Southwest. So there you go. We get back to the normal kind of thing. And one other thing in space weather that I wanted to talk about,
Speaker A: Got
Speaker C: 40 sunspot number, I think.
Speaker A: It's 4336 which is 8 times the size of Earth in that sunspot group. And there's a gentleman by the name of Stefan Burns who I forget his website, I'll have to find it. But he is concerned because our planets are in alignment and this sunspot is producing lots of M class and X class flares. And he says he feels that, you know, the last big Carrington event that we had was in 1859. And he's saying that that sunspot continues to grow and it's not releasing the plasma like it should. In fact, it's building. And his concern is within a few hours it'll be directly Earth facing. And he hopes that we don't have an x65 flare event. And he's been popping off a lot of X flares. And while this thing is right close to aimed right at Earth and he's concerned about maybe things look right for perhaps a Carrington event. So he's watching this real closely. So. And if we had a super Carrington event, he says it could throw us back into the stone age with our grids. So. And that would not be good. Back to you there, Brian. WB6BJF.
Speaker B: So on a Carrington event, what is the time of travel between when it first can be observed and the timing of its arrival? I was just going to quickly look that up, but maybe that's something, you
Speaker C: know,
Speaker A: He said something to that of it takes because there would be a
Speaker B: major solar
Speaker A: mass ejection and I forget how long that takes. Maybe a day. It's like something like I forget how many kilometers per second that's traveling. But the solar winds would be at top speed. So I'm not, I don't want to quote something, but it would be pretty fast there.
Speaker D: Go ahead.
Speaker B: All right. If we trust Google AI, Google AI suggests under modern analogs a similar event would allow 10 to 18 hours after a flare is detected. According to modern simulations, they estimate the event in 1859 arrived 17.6 hours later. So yeah, it looks like we would be able to get a heads up. We would be able to create a big social activity boost, get a lot of ad sales time on the television networks and hopefully give us time to protect electronics. But yeah, I think this is a perfect example of having something that will provide off grid power. Definitely could, you know, like you said, there could be some major, major events. Well, we'll see how this develops. And yeah, I've been noticing a lot of M flares the last couple of Days, very short term duration. But they are, they're hitting us. Thank you very much, Mark.
Speaker A: Yeah, and he believes, he's in Sweden and he believes that that's the reason behind some of our strange Earth weather too. He says solar activity. That's why we've had these big arctic blasts that have gone way south and have affected a lot of people this year. Of course, you got the big warm type thing connected to the weather in the west. And I believe that space weather has a lot to do with Earth weather. I believe that we can say what we want about global warming and I believe that we don't help it. But I do believe that the sun plays a lot into it too, and its energy and let's see. Okay, okay. We just had an active geomagnetic storm. That's the first one I've seen. It's an active geomagnetic. So I don't know what that's going. I know that's going to affect radio conditions. That's the first one of those I've heard. It just came across. Space Weather Live. I encourage everybody to get the Space Weather Live app and put it on your phone. It's a great app. It keeps you abreast of what's going on with our sun. Space Weather Live. It's a great app and it just went off in my ear and told me we're having a geomagnetic storm. So there you go. Back to you there, Brian. I've spent enough time so I'll let you go on to some other people there. WB6PJ.
Speaker B: Yep. And then you'll have people coming on all the forums. Oh, the bands are going to be terrible. Contraire, Mon fl. The bands are unpredictable but there are some wonderful like yesterday throughout, in between some of the solar flares, we had some incredible, incredible openings on 10, 12, 15 meters throughout the day and evening last night. It was quite, quite incredible. So don't turn the radio off. Look for abnormalities and things that really, they can happen, occur quite quickly and disappear just as quickly. Mark, have a wonderful day. Thanks for checking in and good morning to Sarah, WB6BJN AI6US73.
Speaker A: Oh, and by the way, go Hawks. I think I'm going to take the Hawks. They're 4.5 favorites and since my team didn't win, I'm going to eat. It's a day to eat. WB6DJ claiming allegiance already.
Speaker B: All right, Mark, have a great day. Good morning. Coffee breaknet on the W6ek repeater. W6ek repeater of course is located in Auburn, California. That's central Northern California. And the coffee break net is where the sun is always shining, the birds are singing and the fish are jumping. Drop on in. Be part of the conversation this morning. We are a conversation based net. And how interesting would it be if it was just me droning on and on and on incessantly, day after day, hour after hour. Thank goodness you guys chime in with some great interesting content. Good morning. Let's go ahead and take a round of quick in and outs. Meaning you want to get on with your day and you can only spend a few minutes with us. Quick in and outs for the coffee break net. Any takers?
Speaker C: N2DYI.
Speaker A: Kko68 Good morning.
Speaker B: 2e0lrv2echo 0 lima.
Speaker D: Radio victoria,
Speaker A: kilo romeo 4echo lima, sierra stewart hempstead.
Speaker B: Quick in and out. All right, good morning stuart, kr4els and let's see. Good morning to keith 2 echo 0 lima romeo victor. Good morning greg ko6th and good morning to dave k6dcl. And good morning to tony sm6xgp. And good afternoon. Good after morning to patrick. N2dyi. There were some doubles in there, but you got stomped on.
Speaker C: Who did I miss?
Speaker A: How about kilo golf 6 november lima whiskey.
Speaker B: And Good morning Frank KG6 in LW. All right, just a reminder, these are all quick in and out. So let's keep these two minutes or under if we could and let's head on up to the top. Good morning. Good after morning Patrick into dyi. Good. Hello, Brian.
Speaker C: There we go. That's how you make it time. Non denominational. I hope everyone's having a great day so far. Not really anything terribly interesting here. I was supposed to get a call from the dentist yesterday. They didn't call me, so I called them and they said, hey, can you come in twice? They want me to.
Speaker B: Originally they wanted me to come in
Speaker C: once for an extended session. They wanted to clean and then perform the root canal. And then they're like, yeah, can we do that on two separate days? So yeah, I don't know. Still haven't actually gotten a book yet, so still waiting.
Speaker B: Oh, man. So how can we make this even more uncomfortable? Hey, let's spread it over two days. Oh man, I don't know. I am one. Just hop in the chair, get it over with. And yeah, I think I did that once for about three and a half hours. Boy, my mouth was dry, but it was behind me.
Speaker C: Yeah, that's kind of where I am. I just want this to not be a thing anymore. And it's just taking so long to still not know anything.
Speaker B: It's.
Speaker C: Yeah, I'll be very happy when this is not in my life.
Speaker B: Sorry to hear about that challenge. Well, good morning to you, Patrick. Other than a mouthful of pain and angst against the local dentist, anything else that you want to share?
Speaker C: Well, I've got three more nodes that I need to set up. All Starlink nodes. One for testing, one for a different kind of testing, and one for a completely unrelated different kind of testing. I've got a radialist node I want to set up. I've got a new Shari that I want to build a node around. And I'm also looking at this other project that someone forked from All Starlink that is supposed to be optimized for
Speaker B: handling very large loads.
Speaker C: This is kind of a proof of concept. And if it actually holds up, then they want to mainline it into the actual asterisk or the actual ASL project. But right now it's one of these things where there hasn't been enough testing on it yet. There's been a lot of theoretical cool things going on behind the scenes as far as optimizing multi threading, multi core, all that stuff. But it's in a state where installing it is a pretty messy process. So I want to build a whole different system to do some testing with that.
Speaker B: Yeah, I read your, read your text about that. Very interesting that it could, you know, you could actually do some virtual nodes that actually, you know, could be very front end to handle all of the traffic. So very interested in that. Well, glad to hear that you're keeping busy, you know, and I admire your kudos to you. When I am suffering tooth related issues, I pretty much shut down and cry like a baby.
Speaker C: I did that when it happened at first. It's fortunately not that bad now, but that's pretty much exactly how it was.
Speaker B: Okay, okay, I. I was putting you up into superhero status. No, whenever I've had a. An impacted molar or some sort of thing like that, I mean, it's just all you can do. Just stay sane. So, best wishes to get that taken care of quickly. Well, keep us updated on your projects, if you would.
Speaker C: I will certainly do that. Meanwhile, we're supposed to get some more snow tomorrow. Let's see if it impacts things it shouldn't. Theoretically, it's not supposed to stick, but. But this place does close at the slightest provocation, so who knows, we'll be in the 60s by this time next week though. So that should all be gone anyway. That's all I got. 7.3. Have a good one. AI6 US N2DYI.
Speaker B: Yes indeed. You know, if it was a sunny day and there were clothes in the office, I would say you would find your dentist on the golf course somewhere. But maybe he likes skiing into DYI AI6 US coffee break and another good after morning. Good afternoon to Tony SM6XGP. Good morning. Good evening.
Speaker D: Yeah, it's really good evening over here. It's 1825 over here and the dinner is almost served so I have to go away to the kitchen in real soon. Yeah, over here they also talk about a lot of snow delivery on Friday and I don't look forward to that. I don't remember how much they talk about but a couple of centimeters of that ugly thing and it will be cold weather. Yeah, one more week as they say. So we will see. Maybe this will be a cold winter over here. It's not usual to be that. I've read somewhere that this cold winter haven't been here since 2010. So yeah, that's maybe some yearly cycles for this. So yeah, we have to live through this and see what the spring and the summer can give. Maybe it's a good summer after this cold winter. I hope so. Other than that, nothing special to report from here. It's quite easy and lazy evening over here. So back to you, Brian and Semifri from Gothenburg, Sweden.
Speaker B: Before I let you go, was just wondering what amount of snow shuts down Gothenburg. How much snow does it take to really kind of shut down the city? And you know the good thing about having a good heavy winter is supposedly it gets rid of all the pests and so you should have a summer free of pest. I used to believe in that. But after a hard winter my neighbors still live there.
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, that's a good thing. And all that crazy bug sort of stuff are going to die, I think in this cold. Yeah, we can take a lot of snow over here. We quite prepared for that. But we had a huge delivery. I think it was 6 or 7 of January. I don't remember how much we got, but it was a huge amount of snow and that killed the whole local traffic over here. And the trams and buses and all that stuff. Stuff was cancelled and a lot of people didn't made it through their workplaces that day. So I think. I don't remember if it was about 20 centimeters. It was a huge delivery anyway. But that closes almost everything down. But that's not usual. We get A lot of snow sometimes, but not so much at the same time. And that was the problem, especially for the buses and the new electric buses. They didn't work in that weather and they were so low, so they couldn't pass the snow. That's a stupid thing. When you live in Sweden, you buy such vehicles that can handle that.
Speaker A: But
Speaker D: anyway, the trams works quite good in snow over here. But that day they didn't go through the snowy day. So, yeah, a lot of snow we can take. But that day was catastrophe over here. But that's not usual, there's so much of snow. So I think we will survive this delivery on Friday. I hope so.
Speaker B: Well, very good. Thank you for sharing that. Yeah, that is kind of interesting that it isn't the fact that it's an electric vehicle, it's the fact of the design and the ground clearance. How interesting. Evidently. Yeah. Somebody probably will not get a pay raise next year over that one. Tony, have a good good evening. Always a pleasure. SM6XGP AI6US get out your mittens. Get ready for snow. 7 3.
Speaker D: Yeah. Another problem is they have to make those vehicles accessible for everyone to get on board and they have to be that low. So I think that's a problem too. And especially with snow and all that stuff. So, yeah, there's a lot of things to take care of when they. They buy those things, but they're not designed for the Swedish weather, I think. Have a nice day, Brian. And I'm off the kitchen. Yes, everybody, have a nice day to you. And all on the net. SM 660p.
Speaker A: Bye.
Speaker B: From Sweden. Sweden is known for the ability to build some of these trams and such. I remember in Portland, Oregon years ago when they developed light rail up there. I believe the first trains that came over were built in Sweden. Very high quality. Good morning Dave. K6DCL Good morning to you and. And hopefully I'll give you a moment to grab your coffee or hot chocolate and wash down that biscotti. What do you have for us this morning, Dave?
Speaker C: K60 Feel good morning, Brian. And from Dave and Lucy, we're both finished with our biscottis, my friend. We beat ya. And Lucy's chuckling so I have a little orange juice left, little coffee left, and that's about it. We're heading down the trail. We always try to time it as we float along to the 10 o' clock hour. Anyway, other than that, it's been a beautiful morning here here in Jamestown. Beautiful sunshine, just a great start to the day. A little bit cool. It was 39 degrees when we kind of got up this morning and I'm not so sure what, what the degree is now, but it's 44 so it has increased. Going to be a beautiful day. Well, we met our newest great granddaughter, Olivia. She is gorgeous, which surprised me. But most babies, everybody goes, oh, they're so cute, they're so beautiful. And most of them aren't. They're pretty, pretty. Oh, I don't even want to say it, but she is just absolutely gorgeous and I never heard a peep from her. We were in the hospital with the mommy, mommy and daddy and we got some alone time with them instead of the hordes of crowds. Everybody was really nice. Her dad was there and he left when just a little bit after we got there. And so they were doing as good as can be expected after 24 hours labor, believe it or not. I don't know how she did it, but she looked tired. But she was well two, so that's a good thing. And nothing like CW going off in the background. Anyway, we had fun with her and Ethan, our grandson, and they were just wonderful and so loving of their new baby. It just warmed the cockles of our hearts, whatever those are. Anyway, did a little bit more work on the Honda CRV from HF or from a VHF perspective. And we got the electric hooked up for the Jesu 510 and discovered that I was nowhere near hooked up with the antenna. I have to put that back on in a different way and it's going to be even better than before, so hopefully I'll get that done. Today, tomorrow my son is coming up to visit us and also I am going to my first acupuncture. Not, not the very first of my life acupuncture, but my first acupuncture of this year for my hip and other extremities. And I always enjoy acupuncture. I'm weird because I love getting. I'm going to go over beat anyway. Release. I hope I didn't blow the buzzer but I've seen other people go way more than four minutes. But it seems like I can't. It must be me. Anyway, that's it. That's the report from the K6DCL location. Jamestown and feeling much better today. I got better sleep and I was very happy to see the new baby K6DCL. Back to you, Brad.
Speaker B: Well Dave, you are the only person that I know that has timed out our repeater on the coffee break. Ned, I'm not keeping tabs but I think. I think I'm going to run out of fingers on one hand here soon. Congratulations on your newest granddaughter. She sounds absolutely lovely. And acupuncture just no. You come at me with a needle, I don't care if you promise me that it's going to relieve pain. I don't see it that way. Good morning to you. Good morning to Lucy. You have a wonderful day ahead. And once again congratulations. Congratulations on the new baby granddaughter. 7 3.
Speaker C: Okay, brian73 my friend. And we'll see you next week. K6dcl with ai6us73 my friend. Have a great week. K60 seal.
Speaker B: And let's check in with Greg now. K06th Good morning Greg.
Speaker D: Good morning Brian. Good morning everyone.
Speaker C: Greg.
Speaker D: K06th I prevent myself from timing out the repeater by making a little. I've got a little box with LEDs on it that count up with time
Speaker C: and when it gets to the top
Speaker D: it's three minutes and I make sure I unkey before it gets to the top. So that helps.
Speaker C: Lovely.
Speaker D: The start of the day today. I've got the astronomy club meeting tonight so I got to get all my equipment checked out for that get unloaded in the car and we have a dinner, a pre meeting dinner that we have at the Asian Garden restaurant in grass Valley at 5 and the meeting starts at 7 and tonight's speaker is going to be talking about all the wonderful things, at least a dozen of them that you can see in the winter sky. So focus on winter and what's up. So anyway, that's it for the day.
Speaker C: Ko6th
Speaker B: well, if the solar activity and the flares and the potential for a Carrington event comes up in discussion tonight, plan please share any discussions that you might have. And yeah, it definitely does seem like the sun is quite active at this time and kind of. I know you wait for the sun to go down to view the astronomy you want to see, but it definitely is an interactive system. Greg, you have a wonderful day. Enjoy your astronomy meeting this evening and thanks for checking in this morning.
Speaker D: Yeah, there's actually a couple of members who do enjoy looking at the sun with proper equipment, massive filtering and all that kind of stuff. Although kind of weird, if you zoom in enough, it's actually hard to see the sun because if you're zoomed in that much, there's not that much energy left and it's. Yeah, it's kind of fraught with peril viewing the sun. Anyway, to the cancer topic, I kind of don't want to go there. It is nasty stuff. And while progress has been made, my wife still would not be around anyway. 73 ko6th back to Nepal.
Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely. The toll that cancer takes on our society and the pain and everything that it leaves behind, it's a terrible, terrible blight on us and certainly hope that headway can be made. Certainly would love to see a lot of the energies that are put into useless things be put towards that because you know, you know, Lynn and I are thankful for every day of her being a survivor and we are blessed and certainly understand, you know, where you are and the pain that this has caused with you. I just hope to see it in our rear view mirror in our lifetime. That is for sure, Greg. Well, thank you for checking in this morning. K06TH AI6US. This is the Coffee breaknet and we had a comment. Go ahead,
Speaker A: Brian.
Speaker B: N6MED Just wondering if you got me on the list already. I checked in earlier for it.
Speaker A: If you.
Speaker B: Regardless, I will wait my turn. N6 med. And didn't come back when I didn't give your call sign. So I will add you to the list. That's pretty darn sneaky. Good morning. Les to Echo Zero Lima, Romeo Victor. I think I called you by the wrong name earlier. I do apologize. Good morning. Or good evening in your case.
Speaker A: Too easy. Yeah, it doesn't matter what you call me, I'll respond. I won't tell you some of the things I've been called in the past. What was I going to say? Yeah. Quick comment for Tony in Tween. Yeah, I bet the electric bus's batteries didn't last as long in the snow. These electric vehicles, when the temperature drops, so does their range and their. What's it especially put the heaters like that to defrost the screen. It kills the range. But, yeah, that's another story. All right, today, where are we? Yes, we've been interested in this mesh core thing. So many people have been into it and I've been sort of. How can I put this? Pressured a little bit to get a mesh core set up. So I ordered a board from China about two weeks ago and it was due to be delivered on the 9th, but it turned up today. So I've got all little bits and pieces. It's marvellous little circuit board, loads of plugs, sockets and wires and things to go into it and no plans, no circuit diagram, no nothing. So I'm gonna have to investigate it. Luckily, I've got a whole gambit of, I think what you call Elmer's people I can go to that will tell me how it works. I have an envelope covered in writing that I've seen from one phone call. So I think I've got enough information to get started. And then it's a question of finding a way around the software. But, hey, how it's. It's all interesting. These things are always new and interesting and as I say, I think the Meshtastic turned out to be a bit of a fail, damp squid, especially in the town I live in, for only three people that got onto it and they could never contact each other, so they also gave up. Whereas this mesh core thing I think is an awful lot better. And there's nets going all over the uk. I speak to guys up in the Pacific Northwest on their nets up there and they're.
Speaker B: They're majorly into.
Speaker A: Into mesh core. So, yes, and it fits in nicely with my 3D printing hobby. So I'm going to put 3D printer box with a holder for a little solar panel and I've got a solar charge controller plus the board, plus the battery. So I'm going to fit it all together into a nice little box and then we'll stick it up and we'll have a mesh core. What do they call this or something? Not a repeater. And we'll see how far we can get. So, yeah, onwards and upwards. This is LES2E0LLV from the Shire.
Speaker B: No, absolutely, yeah. Meshtastic really launched in San Francisco area of the Bay and then came across about a year and a half ago into the Sacramento area, jumped on board and it was actually was gaining good momentum until the two systems were linked up and then they just choked themselves. And so, you know, a flood type system, you know, when you reach a certain amount of popularity, the success of itself makes it pretty useless. And so, yeah, the club has just, has just come in on mesh core and so we have mesh core mounted up at our vault and then I think there's five other active nodes in the area. So yeah, we're starting to build it out and kind of doing some unique things in our area here as far as frequency and that sort of thing to optimized for the best signal to noise ratio and then also making sure that we fit within the guidelines that are put on us by the fcc. So some interesting navigation going on behind the scenes. But Les, very good. Glad to hear that you are on the mesh core build and putting some of the other activities to use. So very good. Well, anything else for the net this morning before I let you go and get down the list.
Speaker A: 2E0LRV. Yeah, no, I think Meshtastic, it's. You need, you need a large collaboration, lots of people, well, lots of hams having a go at it. But I mean, in the uk, Mesh Corps is outside the license band, so we're not, we're not policed by anybody. So it's a nice easy one and we don't. You don't even have to be able to radio ham to do it in the uk. Anybody can do it. I think a lot of interest has come from people who still use CB and stuff like that. So I should be using my nickname rather than my call sign as my identifier on the mesh call. But yeah, all good fun. And as I say, you know, I think Meshtastic was fantastic to start with, a lot of interest. Then it very, very quickly fizzled out when people realised it just didn't work properly. Because in the UK there weren't enough people on this mesh core. It's completely the opposite. Lots of people have come in and I'm very late to the party, so. Oh dear. But anyway, hopefully everybody has a very nice day and as I say, it's probably coming up to quarter to six in the evening here, so perhaps I ought to go and eat something. I'll go and have a graze and have a look at the fridge and the freezer and the cupboards and see what we got that fancy. So with that, I'll say cheers and beers back for the minute and we'll hopefully catch up again on the next coffee break.
Speaker B: All right, Les? Yeah, very good. No, we seem to be kind of late to joining Europe on the mesh core, but I think it's the right thing because it is more based on. On, you know, a repeater system which, you know, as amateur radio operators we're used to. More used to a repeater based rather than a peer to peer and being able to be assured that your message has arrived and didn't die, you know, halfway up the stream is quite beneficial. Les, thanks for joining us and Enjoy your dinner. 2 Echo 0 Lima Romeo Victor. That's less not Keith. And you have a great day. 7 3. And kilo Romeo 4 echo Lima Sierra. Good morning, Stuart. It looks like we have about three minutes before Fireside and East Coast Hub disconnects. I apologize, but good morning. Good morning.
Speaker E: Kilo Romeo Four Echo Vimosierra KRLS. I'm in Hampstead, North Carolina. We're just melting out of 12 inches of snow down here, which is extremely unusual for this part of North Carolina. Near the beach we're. I'm basically, I'm all retired now. I've got a little piece of a rental house that I did try to fix up to get on the market here shortly just as I'll be putting some epoxy countertops in. And my wife's still working. She's a medical coder and it just works out at home and she's doing really well and, and everything seems to be doing well and just want to thank you for the opportunity to check into this net and send me please to you all and thank you.
Speaker B: Wow, 12 inches of snow on North Carolina along the coast. That is unusual. And I know your trees are not built for that or the electrical grid for that, so hopefully it didn't impact you too badly. Yes, it sounded like you were in a empty remodel going on, so I wish you well. Hey, drop by again sometime. We're here every day of the week from 7:30am to 10:00am Pacific Time. And we really thank East Coast Hub and Fireside for joining us. So nice to meet you, Stuart. My name is Brian. And drop on by again sometime. All right. And I saw Fireside just drop off there at 9:50, 17:50 at the top. Good morning. Let's see. We have.
Speaker A: Have Frank KG6NLW Good morning Frank.
Speaker B: Good morning Brian. And that Coffee Break Net Kilo Golf six November Lima Whiskey Big shout out before the fireside disconnects if they haven't
Speaker A: already to Kilo Alpha 3.
Speaker B: There was a there that came and subscribed to YouTube so thank you for that. Unfortunately this morning the coffee break did not go out over YouTube for me. For some reason the program decided to shut itself down midstream. So not today, but tomorrow it should be back up and running. And tonight on the Ham Radio Kids table We have Chris Kilo 0 Charlie Japan Hotel the open Ham Clock creator on to discuss what Open Hand Clock is and how it will potentially work with or interface with the original Ham clock that Elwood had with that Brian. That's about it for me. You know the usual for the coffee break nits in the morning, AI6 US
Speaker A: KG6NLW all right, that should be an interesting Listen, I checked out Open Ham Clock and I hope that it can become a local device. And correct me if I'm wrong Frank, but it looks like it is just a GUI or a browser base at this time.
Speaker B: Negative. It is browser based. Yes, but you can install it locally like you could with Ham Clock on any Linux distro, Raspberry PI, et cetera. So there are instructions on how to do that online.
Speaker A: Alrighty. Yeah, maybe I was a little too early to the party when I saw it announced on one of the forums. I went over there and there wasn't much information other than a GUI that I was able to put in my call sign in Grid square and then it populated a page for me. So. Okay, I will need to follow along on this project and I know that another one was announced I think yesterday, so looks like people are jumping in there to fill unfortunate void left by Elwood's passing. Well Frank, have a wonderful day and Open Ham Clock creator on tonight. What time? And node
Speaker B: 5pm local time, that's 0100 UTC on Z, the ham radio kids table YouTube channel.
Speaker C: So if you look up HR, HR
Speaker B: kids table or Ham Radio Kids table it will bring you right to the page. It is also linked through my YouTube page, KG6NLW. It's going to be dual streamed to both.
Speaker A: All right, very interesting guess, very timely. You have a wonderful day there Frank. Thanks for checking in. Always a pleasure. KG6NLW AI6 US Happy Hump Day.
Speaker B: Hey Brian.
Speaker A: Good morning Jim. I was corrected that you were heard by somebody on All Star but we did not hear you on rf so scratching my head. Why? Why we didn't hear you equally equally as well good morning Jim n6med sorry for bruising your beautiful face.
Speaker C: Good morning Brian. Our to and fro always gives me a chuckle. Thank you for that. Yeah I heard myself come back on one of the other babbling here. The other repeaters are receivers. Heard myself come back RF so I don't know. No I'm here and just did a quick lookup on ham radio clock and it's interesting that apparently it's not available for Windows. How about that? At least not from the list that they give though it's going to make a friend of mine who is a mach head very happy perhaps. But anyway what I've been up to, which you kind of know from some oblique questions on the surface to you I've been playing with VAR AC lately really kind of jumped into the deep end and ran into an old old problem which is sort of a byword from my previous my old my longest profession which is RTMM RTMFQ rtmfm I'm sorry which means read the mother fletching manual and so I've been trying to just pick and poke to make vary C work and they've been reduced to going back to the manual and finally got things working and set it up for email as a email, what do you call it? Gateway and also for the AI function and I am kind of I think that has questionable value the AI. Let me break it. I know I'm babbling quickly about something that maybe other folks don't know much about or haven't played with it, but there's a feature in the latest version of VAR AC where one can connect to a station that offers AI and as a person you directly to computer the AI station. You can go to an AI engine and query it or have a conversation with a computer or whatever. Irad Deutsch, the author of Bar Academy short video on it and he plays with it while he's out camping supposedly. And how do I build a fire? I don't have any matches, which might be kind of a stretch, but AI tells them but beyond that I'm not real clear on a real practical mechanism for it. But I'm having fun with it playing with it. I'm a little surprised that more people don't. Of course it is just a strictly keyboard to keyboard and a lot of folks are just more into slam bam thank you ma' am types of context. But at any rate, I'd be interested to know how many other folks in the Club play with. And I know you've dabbled in it. Dennis has. I think somebody else has, but that's about all I've heard over to you.
Speaker A: Yeah, I know Burton has it installed and I've heard some other people talking on the repeater, but, you know, honestly, you know, I don't like quick slam, bam, thank you, ma' am contacts, but I am not a typist. I mean, I am a hunt and pecker and somebody will definitely give thumbs up on that last word. But, you know, it's one of those things. I do not enjoy keyboard. I don't text unless I have to. I don't email unless I have to. It kind of saps some of the enjoyment out of amateur radio for me. So there we go. Thank you. There is a different flavor of amateur radio for each one of us. I'd like to see if N9 muscle. Daniel, are you on frequency?
Speaker D: I am here, yes.
Speaker A: All right, Jim, I would like you to meet Daniel and you guys can either chat after the net here or connect up elsewise. But Daniel, N9 MUF has graciously offered to help you and anyone else who is interested in VAR ac. And Daniel is very active in the VAR AC Wednesday. So I'll make let you guys go direct here for a second to make your contact. So go ahead, Jim.
Speaker C: Copy. I want to make sure I got your call sign right, Daniel. November 9th, Mike Uniform Foxtrot.
Speaker D: That's absolutely correct, Jim, and I am good on QRZ as well.
Speaker C: I copy QRZ and your local rf. You're not coming in over the net, are you?
Speaker D: No, I am in Chicagoland, so I am very definitely coming in via All Star.
Speaker A: Copy that.
Speaker C: All right, I'll contact you by way of email. I'll go to QRZ for that. And since you're in Chicago, I have to find out where you are relative to Downers Grove. But at any rate, I'm kind of getting their AC figured out. As I said, I finally reduced myself actually reading the manual, but love to talk about more about it. All right, and I'll go back to Brian here with your comment about hunting and pecking. I understand totally that with keyboard chats, my older profession was technical writing. I never did learn how to type properly. So even today I can type fairly quickly, but I use my ten key and my ten fingers or eight fingers and two thumbs across the keyboard interchangeably back and forth, up and down with no real pattern, but I know where the letters are and I can kind of plunk them out that way. But that's about it. The only problem I have is when the connection has a data rate of, oh, you know, over a thousand kilobits per second. I just can't type that fast.
Speaker A: Very good. Yes, indeed. Okay, I have company, but yeah, that's good. Any keyboard activity? I admire anybody who has skill. I am a 5 or 6 finger typist at best. All right, so Daniel, great we made a connection between you and Jim. And Jim, Daniel is a wealth of information when it comes to VARA and var ac. So glad you guys were connected there. Well, I better get the last roll call or the last call in for folks for the coffee breaknet. But thanks for dropping by Jim and Daniel. I'm going to throw it over to you. See Daniel, if you have anything to add before we close the conversation out with Jim here.
Speaker D: No, just. Yeah, feel free to reach out about var ac or really for that matter, anything digital. There's very few digital modes I haven't done and I'm considered the digital guy at the club, which is just southeast of Downers Grove and I'm about 20 miles southwest. Seven three and nine. MUF
Speaker C: and Brian all clear too. Good coffee all in six mity.
Speaker A: All right. That's what I absolutely love about the coffee breaknet. The connection for people of similar interest in finding out about each other and kind of getting to be friends and helping each other, mentoring, elmering, etc. Very cool. Good morning. This is the coffee breaknet on the W6ek repeater. I'm Brian AI6us and let's go ahead and open it up for the log only. So if you'd like to get in the log. I know we are a conversation based net but some people just want to drop by and show proof of life. Let's take proof of life for the log. AI6 US coffee breakdown
Speaker E: KR6GC6 MGC. Hi, I'm here. I just got licensed.
Speaker C: Kilo Mike 6 Mike Mike. Proof of life

Speaker D: Whiskey Bravo 6 calls uniform Yankees with a pole.
Speaker E: Your radio is on the right frequency. This is the home of.
Speaker A: All right. Boy, you guys threw a lot of calls at me right there. Good morning, Joel. WB6G U Y got you in the log. You have a wonderful day. Glad you have a pulse. And let's see, Ki6TC. I think you had a recheck and I want to welcome first time check in with a new license. Is that you, Sam? Ko6Mike Golf Charlie, is that correct? Is that you, Sam?
Speaker E: Yes, it is. K06 MGC. I'm here. Bye.
Speaker A: All right, good morning to you and we will teach you how to turn off the Roger beep. Your radio is sending out a little Roger beep after you transmit, so we'll help you with that. But good morning, everyone. I'd like you to meet Sam Ko6mgt. And everyone. Sam, just stand by for a moment. Everyone grab your microphones. Let's welcome a brand new technician. Just got his license last evening, got it Monday night and got his call sign last evening, I should say so. Everybody pick up your mic and welcome Sam. Welcome, Sam. AI6US. Everyone join in.
Speaker B: Congratulations.
Speaker A: M. Kilo Golf 6.
Speaker C: Welcome, Sam. N6MED. If you go anywhere near a ham radio store, leave your wallet at home. Otherwise it's a very dangerous practice. N6 med. Congratulations, Sam.
Speaker A: Congratulations.
Speaker C: Good job.
Speaker E: Congratulations.
Speaker A: Let the learning begin. Sam, KN6 SSP. All right, Sam, so big welcome. You heard through all those doubling stations and all that we call that heterodyne and kerfuffle. You have a lot of people out there welcoming you to a great hobby. And we were very, very glad to be part of your entry into amateur radio. And yeah, proof of licensing, I will be. The club will be sending out a $35 check to cover your licensing fees. So congratulations. That's something we do especially for people under 21 years of age. So congratulations. Sam, welcome.
Speaker E: Thank you. I really, really, really appreciate that. I also did figure out how to turn off the Roger beep during the time that everyone is saying welcome.
Speaker A: And I get that. Well, very good. Well, I talked to your Elmer a little bit earlier this morning, Don, and he understood that you got your call sign last night, and he's also looking forward to making contact with you. So welcome. You're getting into the repeater just fine from your location, and welcome to a wonderful hobby.
Speaker E: I really appreciate the formal. Yeah, I can get into it fine from just here. I had my doubts originally, but I squeaked some stuff and it managed.
Speaker A: Yeah, with an HT, you can move 6 inches 1 direction or another, and you'll be able to get into a repeater. Or not. It's just one of those magical things about rf. Well, we're just wrapping up the net here, but feel free to hang around. The Repeater is on 24 and 7, and just throw your call sign out there.
Speaker A: And welcome to a wonderful hobby. And Sam, it was a pleasure to meet you and your mom at the session the other night. And big congratulations to you, my friend. All right, clearing with K06M G C. That's Kilo Oscar Six Mike Golf Charlie, new amateur radio operator. SAM well, good morning. Let's see, we had a recheck by Ki6tc. Go ahead, Glenn. Glenn Uno.
Speaker B: Thank you, Brian. Ki6tc and I wanted to offer the title of the book that Kathy offered and it's called Bud and Me and I don't know the author, but Kathy, if you could add the author, please.
Speaker C: I don't have that at the tip of my tongue. I'm sorry.
Speaker A: All right. I think you said Bud. Oh, I think you said Bud and me like Budweiser and me. Is that correct? Bud and Me. Is that correct? GLENN
Speaker B: that is correct. And we'll get back later with the another day with the author. So I am clear and have a good day. Love you, Kathy. KR6TC.
Speaker A: We all love Kathy. Kathy, tell us one reason why did you recommend this book to your dad and better yet, why should we read it? Bud and me
Speaker C: love you too, dad. Just a little background on why I recommended it to him is just being a young man and independent as he was, I think he will relate to these two young men. It was a short little snippet that caught my eye that someone had posted and it starts with the fact that my husband and I were watching extracted and a 20 year old couldn't handle staying overnight 24 hours in the wilderness, which I'm not in his shoes. But he just doesn't come from that kind of background apparently because he was done after 24 hours and the prize winnings was $250,000. So interesting that he was not able to continue beyond that point. But so we watched that the other night and then the next morning I saw this story and it was about a five year old and a nine year old who hopped on their horse. The little five year old had to use something to get up onto the horse, but they rode from Oklahoma to Arizona, I believe, and horseback and then back and then they did two other trips after that. So adventurous. I just think it was interesting and it was really sweet because the father gave him a Bible and asked them to say their prayers and not to cross rivers they couldn't see the bottom of and sent them on their way happily. It's just fascinating to me.
Speaker A: Yeah, quite interesting how we turned into, you know, the kid's tough, he's Going to make it to, you know, you can't go out, you know, you can't go into the streets unless you're wearing your elbow pads, helmets and mouth guard. Yes, indeed. I watched a very interesting video the other day on Daisy, the BB gun maker and how, you know, during the 20, the 30s and 40s, you know, the BB gun was that rite of passage for a young boy and many young girls as well, but they focused on that was kind of the Red Rider, tough kid, you know, learning, responsibility and the effects of, you know, you can't shoot your eye out to. Nowadays, everything that's sold is plastic and shoots rubber Nerf things and the impact of making a bad choice is quite lessened. So, yeah, putting two kids on a horse and sending them to Texas. What could go wrong? Thanks, Kathy.
Speaker C: Yeah, I'm sure things went wrong, but a lot of things went right and I don't know where the mother in the picture was. I think if the mother was in the picture, perhaps they would not have been sent off. I certainly wouldn't have with my kids just 40 years ago.
Speaker B: Could I add one thing?
Speaker A: Yeah, go ahead, Glenn, because I know you put Kathy on a horse and sent her off on her own when she was five.
Speaker B: I had a baby gun when I was a kid and, and the only time I used it was I shot a bird. It fell out of the tree did. And that just broke my heart and I just didn't like that BB gun ever again. KR6PC
Speaker A: and I learned responsibility when I shot my best friend and I were having a BB gun shootout and I shot him in the back and it penetrated his shirt and lodged in the skin. And I learned the impact that my mother's belt could have on correcting my error. Very good. Hey, thank you for that breakdown of the book there, Kathy. Glenn, thank you for sharing the book title, Bud and Me. And we'll look forward to your review on this boy. We're way into way, way, way deep into overtime. So I'm going to go ahead and do one more call for the log only. Anybody wants to get in the log, Coffee Breaknet. We're wrapping her up and get ready to shut her down.
Speaker D: November 6, Delta T.
Speaker A: It. Okay. Unfortunately, a W5 station, W5 Izz Echo, keeps hanging up the repeater here. Let's see, was there somebody checking in from Northern California from the W6 GRC repeater? Good morning. All right. Just want to say good morning to. Let's see, Jim. Good morning, Jim. WH6Q got you in the log. Good morning to Dick, WB7UKX and good morning to KG9M. Good morning, Frank. And let's see, let's see if I missed anyone. November 6th Delta Tango. Good morning to you there, Rick. All right, anyone else for the log before I shut down the coffee break net? Good morning,
Speaker B: Ai6l says
Speaker E: k6blk.
Speaker D: Good morning, brian. Kn6ycg. Morning, brian. It's patrick.
Speaker A: Hey, Good morning, Patrick. KN6Y CG. Got you in the log. And good morning to Dan. Aloha. K6DLK. Got you in the log there, Dan. Good morning to Bert, AI6LZ. All right, with that, I'm going to go ahead and close down the net. We have run way long and I need to get out of here, but I certainly have had a wonderful morning chatting with everybody and we've had some great conversations this morning. Come on back again tomorrow. Theta WA6EWF and Jerry WA6E will be your net control operators and conversation facilitators. So yes indeed, we will be back tomorrow. This evening, of course, is the Let me double check. This is going to be the ELMER Net. The ELMER Net here on this repeater. So if you have a question to ask about maybe a piece of equipment or something going on in your shack or something you're considering buying or maybe can hang around and answer other people's questions this evening, 7:30pm here on node 51018, also on EchoLink. Join us this evening for the ELMER net. That's at 7:30pm Pacific Time and usually runs about one hour and want to thank W6EMR Eric for running that net. So that's a fun net every first and third Wednesday of the month here on this repeater. With that, I'm going to go ahead and close down the net on this Wednesday and wish everybody a wonderful day ahead. The Coffee Break Net, where the sun is always shining, the birds are singing and the fish are jumping. Coffee breaknet is sponsored by the Sierra Foothills Amateur Radio Club. We are here every day of the week, 7:30am to 10:00am Pacific time. I'm Brian AI6 us returning the W6ek repeater back to normal usage, whatever that may be. Have a great Wednesday, everybody. 7:3 and real quick, Brian, for anyone
Speaker E: that's interested about Livestream I mentioned this evening at 5pm Pacific time.
Speaker A: I did post it to the CR
Speaker E: Foothills Facebook group so it is there. And Brian, I sent you the link
Speaker A: as well just in case you have
Speaker E: anywhere you want to share.
Speaker A: Kilo Golf 6 November Lima Whiskey. Have a great day. All right. That should be interesting. Visitor this evening, the creator of Open Ham Clock. Potential replacement for the ham clock as it end of life. Good morning. 73. AI 6 US clear.
Speaker C: Okay.
Speaker F: Peruvgm with two final comments. Anybody that's interested in the author of that book, I looked it up. Alvin Athrodathy. That's Alvin Athrodathy, and I'm the one who subscribed to your YouTube channel. Also, K3BC have been clear. Everybody have a good day.
Speaker A: All right. We will add that to the notes. Alvin Abernathy, the author of Bud and Me. Thank you. You have a great day. Ai6us all be.
Speaker D: Hey, if anybody's hung around, this is KN6YCG.
Speaker E: I'm just curious if there's an easy
Speaker D: way for me to find other, like morning coffee break nets nationwide, similar to what we do in Auburn. If anybody's listening and has any information, let me know. Or if there's a Facebook page or something I should visit. 7:3.
Speaker A: I see you're running EchoLink. So do you happen to have the All Star on your. On your device? Because All Star does have a tool that shows active nodes. That's a great way to find different nets and different things that are happening have that time.
Speaker D: No, I'm on an iPhone, so, yeah, I'm using EchoLink, Brian, as I'm in my happy place, Sarasota, Florida, where it's finally warmed up again. But I didn't know I could load an All Star app to one of my devices. So on the way back from Home Depot right now, maybe I'll go take a look, see what I can dig up. Thanks for the help.
Speaker A: IOS devices use a repeater phone, and maybe if there's a repeaterphone user out there, maybe you can help. Patrick, is there any interface or anything on repeaterphone that shows active nodes, or what would your recommendation be? I know there's a lot more nets on All Star than there are on Echo Lake, so anybody want to help? Patrick,
Speaker E: this is K06.
Speaker D: Yeah, Brian, I have repeater phones, so I'll take a peek at that. I never noticed anything like that in there, but I'll definitely take a look. I've got my local HT with me, and I've made a couple contacts on the local repeater here, but it seems to be relatively quiet. KN6YT just for ID
Speaker E: a YNCG. Patrick, this is K06CGU Terrence from Paris, California.
Speaker D: Hey, Terrence, how are you doing? Harris, California. I know the Area in general.
Speaker E: Why, thank you, Patrick. Yeah, so I'm doing pretty good, but I'm also using the repeater phone to listen to the coffee Coffee Net. But if you use your browser on your phone, you'll see the All Star Net and it will list the various talk groups and the time and what day they function. And then once again, you can use the repeater phone to connect to those nets if you're away from your radio. Back to you.
Speaker D: Okay, Terry, good idea. I'll actually just grab my iPad. It's a lot easier to see and I'll just make notes or bookmark it on my radio repeater phone app. Really what I was trying to find was local repeaters that have activity and when they have activity so that I could actually use my HT when I'm out and about in Sarasota because there are a couple good repeaters here.
Speaker E: And that is a very good idea and it is easy to do. But if you're going to use your HT and try and connect to various repeaters, are you using like a PI star or some sort of node to go along with that?
Speaker F: No,
Speaker A: I was just going to use
Speaker D: my feeders that work with my in my local area.
Speaker C: Okay.
Speaker E: So yeah, take a look at the All Starnet online using your browser and then it should list the local groups that you should be able to reach. K06CG clear.
Speaker A: You know, Patrick, as far as activity in your local area, I'd probably, you know, take a look, see what amateur radio clubs are active in that area. And that probably would be a place that I would start if I was trying to find where activity is. Very surprising that an area as flat as Sarasota and as many people live in Sarasota that you're not hearing much activity on your radio. That does not bode well, but maybe everybody moved south and left their radio towers back at their northern properties. Have a good one, Patrick73AI6US.
Speaker A: Here's kind of an interesting question. Patrick, N2DYI or Tom N6H, if you guys are monitoring. I'm kind of curious. I keep hitting the keyed nodes when traffic is up on the W6ek and we don't show up on keyed nodes no matter what the traffic is. Oh, no. There we go. Private. We are listed as private. No activity pass through. AI Secure us.
Speaker B: Node 51018 disconnected.
