Speaker C: Well, I'll tell you what. First and foremost, I love the trivia question. And I actually knew the answer before. I'm just going to warn you, I asked this question on Friday night. Trivia. But I did know the answer before that. And man, that halftime show from Beyonce was so hot that it caused like a 10,000 volt transformer there at the Superdome in New Orleans to trip. Which caused. I don't remember the outage, but it was like 30 minutes or something like that. Did I get it?
Speaker A: You sure did. Yep. Which super bowl halftime show preceded a stadium blackout? Yeah, the Beyonce show in 2013. I don't know what caused it. Cause and effect. But maybe Beyonce just blew the stadium out. Yeah.
Speaker C: Gotta be honest and say, I'm not a fan of the queen bee air quotes. Queen bee? I. Yeah, I mean, she's talented, but I. The whole queen bee thing, when you give yourself that title or when you lean into that title, I don't know. Okay, well, moving on.

Speaker D: Oh boy, that's a, that's a good question. I, I don't know, to be honest with you. I'm going to guess the Patriots because Smitty was complaining about the, the, the Patriots winning too much. So let's, let's go with them, see if that works or not. Yeah, I did remember the 2013 power outage. It was the Niners and the Ravens and I'm not a football fan by any means, but the reason I remember that was that I had a friend from high school and she was sitting on my sofa watching the game and the power went out of the stadium in the early part of the third quarter and she hit the roof. Oh my God. She had a meltdown. Luckily they delayed the game and came back and everything was fine. But yeah, I did not remember for the life of me that it was Beyonce that was the performer there. Now that he mentioned it, I remember that. And the reason I remember it is because I'm not a fan of Beyonce, but I'm a huge, huge Shelly Rowland fan that she was on there too. Yeah, good thing Smitty got it because I'd have missed it entirely.
Speaker A: Well, it was the Patriots that have won the most super bowl, so I didn't expect to get it that easily. But you know what, I think everybody probably knows that the New England patriots have won 11 Super Bowls. That's quite a feat when you think about.
Speaker D: Really is. And I make a lot of fun of football. And if you enjoy it, then have a good time. I mean it's, we all make fun of things. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't enjoy what you enjoy.
Speaker E: So.
Speaker D: You know, there's a lot of people that make fun of ham radio operators and most of them are other ham radio operators.
Speaker A: That's because of all the other folks. Don't know much about ham radio operators except those CP beers out there. I bet they make a lot of fun of us.
Speaker D: Yeah, that pesky C beer up in Meadow Vista. I'll tell you, when PG&E gave him that, that moniker, I was almost fell out of the car laughing. Oh gosh. Yeah. In any case, moving on from there, let's see, Larry and I have been having an awful lot of fun out at the, out of his shack out there. And we got, got the big Henry up online and tested it all out into a dummy load. The tubes in it were soft, so it's got the original imac metal plate tubes in it from 1970 something. So I've got a brand new set of amperex graphite tubes we're going to throw in it tomorrow morning and fire that puppy up and let her gas out for a while and then we'll get her on the air and put it up on that Ultimax antenna and see if we can't heat up some wire.
Speaker A: Oh, there you go. We got that thing running and it's cranking out. So now it's just time to test it out. It sounds like a pretty successful adventure.
Speaker D: So far so good. The multimeter does not work on it. It's a very simple circuit. So it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. But I have enough experience with the Henry amplifiers that I can tune it with just one meter. So that's, that's good enough. I, I know what it sounds like when the grid drive gets up. Grid current gets up to a certain point. So yeah, having had a very similar amplifier for 20 years, I am very familiar with this model. So was able to tune it up. And yeah, it's, it's putting out about 1500 watts into a dummy load right now with about 120, 25 watts drive somewhere in there. And we should be 2 kilowatts right there. So that's, you know, the tubes are just soft so it's no big deal. Those tubes are, were manufactured when I was a freshman in high school. So yeah, they're a little on the old side, but the new tubes will bring it right up to par and it'll be fine. And if you want to take a look at it, you know where to go. Confederate Sun1 we. I posted three videos that Larry and I took up there of uh, the amplifier just as we were doing the final assembly and checkout. And then a picture of it up and running or a video of it up and running. And then of course the third video was because I forgot to show the tubes. And the best part about tube amplifiers is that they glow in the dark. So I made a third video where we highlighted the tubes and the glow and all that kind of fun stuff. Speaker D: I think 11 pounds, maybe, or 380 grams. I don't know. One of them. Yeah, we got about zero here. A little right around, I think it's still cold out, but the sun's out, so that's good. Oh, wait, it's kind of a little bit now. Take a look at this thing. Haven't looked at it lately. I've been out in it. I haven't looked at it. Oh, I gotta take a look at it. That's so far out. I have to. I take a picture of it and I zoom into it. But, you know, I want to say, oh, wow. Oh, 24 degrees. Or well, or 23, wow, we're 25. Or I guess about, oh, we're making. We're making. Hey, where's the point? But yeah, I'd say £11 or 380 grams, something like that. And yeah, I remember when we did a game at our high school and the band director turned the lights out. Back in the day when they were tungsten bulbs, you could turn them out and they would come right back on. They did a halftime show one, we did two of them. One time he did it, the neighbor did baton toilet and they had the fire, you know, on the end of the. But then they did another one later and he didn't realize that when he turned the lights off that they don't come right back on because we replaced them from the tungsten bulbs, you know, the old light bulb into some newer ones that. Yeah, they take some time to warm up and come on. That was probably one of the things why they took a while. I remember in the school we had that in the gym and we lost electric. Hell it would. The lights were about 10 to 12, 12 to 15 minutes. They would start fighting. The lights would try to come on because they're just getting cool enough to start to come on. So then I did the practice, I just go down and we lost them. They were doing practice. I just turned the power off. In 15 minutes we could turn them on. They would just come right on. Yeah, one time they did that and I went down and the guys came over come maintenance and they said, oh, we can't really do anything. And they said, well, he did the best thing. He turned them off and got them to reset. So now LEDs. Now we got LEDs and they are probably a quick on. So let's send it back to net KSF qv.

Speaker E: Not too much. We, as you can hear, watch. I don't know if it sounds any different from us using repeater foam, but we finally got a node up and running. We tried two different ways of to use an all in one cable and both of those failed miserably after multiple, multiple attempts. So we gave up and got a sherry PI hat. And that seems to be working relatively well. We are still having a little bit of a learning curve with it. I know we have some tweaks that we can go in and probably make it a little bit better. But let me drop real quick and I want to paint a picture for you. All right? So this morning while we were waiting for the coffee breaknet, Christina decided to stay in the house where it's warm and cozy. And I bared the cold, which wasn't really that cold, but it's like 28 degrees or something like that out
Speaker C: because
Speaker E: the node has a magnet mount antenna on a cookie sheet up towards the attic so we can hear everything all the way around the neighborhood. So I'm out walking the dog when the coffee break starts. And I kept trying to check in. I tried to check in two times on the first round and three times on the second round and finally got in on the second round. And I knew part of the problem was my Yaesu FT3DR. Is it's lived a good life, it's lived a hard life, and it might be time to retire it pretty soon here. But the funny thing is I get back into the house and Christina's like, man, I love hearing Jeff on the radio, but I don't understand why he didn't hear any of your check ins. I heard every single one.
Speaker D: Perfect.
Speaker E: Let me let it drop again. So lovingly I looked back at her with a big smile on my face and told her that I loved her and asked her if she understood why she heard me coming in booming strong on her radio and that you guys might not hear me. And when she smiled and said no, I explained to her, simplex, that's an extra, ladies and gentlemen. Gentlemen,
Speaker B: Gotta get your dig in where you can because you don't have your extra yet.
Speaker E: That is affirmative. I'm a strong believer that licenses aren't everything. Degrees aren't everything. Sometimes it's what you know, not how much you paid for a certificate. Just kidding. She took the test. She's way smarter than I am in a lot of stuff. But it just, yeah, now she's mad at me for ditching her poking fun at her bachelor's degree also.
Speaker B: Well, there's common sense that sort of applies to a lot of it. Experience goes a long ways towards making comments that stand out a little bit more.
Speaker E: I think the best part was how I tried to describe it, was if you have a radio that's transmitting on simplex at 500 milliwatts and a radio that's transmitting on 5 watts, who wins? And she goes, I do. I built a node.

We've found like three other node ish things online that are other projects that we might want to try also. Originally we had that like, why would we ever need another one if we got one working? But I think we might have caught the bug and want to start messing around with other stuff. Also,
Speaker B: as with all things, it becomes a rabbit hole when you start going down that path and things are changing all of the time. I mean, I actually have a node. I haven't wanted to go down that path yet, but I can see the convenience. It's definitely worth doing.
Speaker E: Yeah, that's what's interesting. Like we've, we never really completely saw the need, you know, Emphasis on need for one. Because in the grand scheme of things, what do you actually need? But it's definitely convenient. I do like the fact that I'm sitting here talking on a HT and that's how it's going through there. So I still feel connected to the radio when I was using repeaterphone. Super convenient, super awesome. But it didn't. I mean, not to knock anybody who uses it that way, but it didn't quite feel like radio. Something about a push to talk on a screen. It just didn't feel like radio. But it worked. And so that's why I don't necessarily think people need a node. But it's very convenient.
Speaker B: Yeah, I think I like pressing the mic when I'm talking on the radio. I don't really like pushing that virtual button on repeaterphone and then waiting for the screen to flip over. The timing seems to be just not that quick.
Speaker D: It's.
Speaker B: It's a little awkward for me to use repeaterphone, but, yeah, having an HT and walking around the house, doing whatever, keeping connected to the net, that makes it kind of nice.
Speaker E: Yes, it's nice. The other thing is we've been gone for almost a year now, which is just crazy to think of. And the last four days, we've had a radio on in the house every day that we've been home. And we've just forgotten how much we miss, you know, just hearing the constant traffic. We're trying really hard for our local club to kind of get more traffic to the repeater, but, you know, stuff like that builds over time. W60k didn't have almost constant use of the repeater. You know, the first year it came out, it took a while. And even then there's the laughable quiet hours where nobody's quite using it, but there's always somebody listening for the most part. So we'll get there. And you guys are a good distraction while we're waiting for it. But, yeah, other than that, going back to the big game, we have. We're going to a party tonight. Friends of a friend hung out a couple of times, but. But they are super into sports, so Christina and I are going to basically cause mayhem if we can. Whatever team everybody else is rooting for, I'm going to root for the other one. And when you don't care, but you like the social aspect of it, it's really fun to be the devil's advocate and just cause mischief.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, that sounds good. I think causing mischief is always a little fun when you're.

Speaker A: When you're playing the opposite of everyone's fan favorite. I bet there's enough arguments amongst themselves, though, because Tennessee doesn't have a dog in the fight, so they have their opinions. But that said, what's more important is the food. What are you all bringing to the party?
Speaker B: Well, I don't know if you're prepared. For you guys, it's still really early in the morning and not quite ready for this amazingness, but we have a recipe that we've been using, and we make it almost every super bowl, whether we watch the super bowl or not. But a slow cooked, shredded chicken, buffalo ranch dip. And the ingredients are literally cheese, cheese, cheese and cheese, buffalo sauce, ranch and seasoned shredded chicken.
Speaker A: That sounds amazing. Lots of cheese, lots of buffalo, and lots of shredded chicken. What a combination. I imagine the chips or whatever else you're putting it on are amazing.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's the only downfall to this dish. I have yet to find a chip that's strong enough to actually use it as a dip. We tend to just end up getting the.
Speaker A: Getting a pair of tongs or a
Speaker B: fork, and you just take your chip and then add the dip to it. So the. I don't even know if you could call it a dip anymore, but that's what the recipe calls it. This year, we're trying. We bought those Tostitos scoops, and the goal is leave the scoop on the plate, use a fork to add the chicken dip to the scoop, and eat it. But it is literally crack cocaine. It is delicious, and it's like wine. When you're cooking with wine, there's always these recipes that say recipes for leftover wine and leftover wine. Like, I don't think we've ever had leftover wine or this chicken dip. It just disappears.
Speaker A: No, it doesn't disappear. It just transfers from the recipe to your waste, because that stuff's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Speaker B: Well, definitely not with that much cheese in it. It's sticking put for a while.

Speaker A: Well, this morning we took down our Christmas tree finally and put it away. Got some dinner in the crock pot, and we're having chicken and potatoes and carrots cooked in Italian dressing. I don't want New England to win because I don't want them to get another super bowl ring. They can't have more than the Steelers.

Speaker C: Hey, good morning, guys. First, I have to start off by saying, a, I have not Google searched this, but I think I know it. And B, I am not a sports fan of any sport of any kind. So I'm going to say it's Tiffany's, and that'll be my guess with some minor confidence.
Speaker B: Well, with a high degree of confidence, you got it correct. It is Tiffany's. Tiffany's is the famous jeweler that makes the Lombardi Trophy, among others. So great job, great guessing, or you knew it from some fact.

Speaker C: I almost felt like that was a voice text. And I put an exclamation point in the voice text. Anyway, listening to the net from beautiful downtown Sarasota, Florida, And I'm sorry to all those people who are suffering from that painful thing we call winter because I'm in shorts and flip flops and it's 70 degrees today.
Speaker B: Oh, wow. Yeah, that painful thing. Those folks up in New England right now are probably bemoaning what you just said.
Speaker C: I was hanging out on Main street last night with some local friends and it is interesting how many people we run into from the northeast right now and they're just down here soaking in a week or two of sun before they have to go back to the freeze. Which is a bummer, but some people I know do like it. I just happen to not be one of them. Anyway, if anybody was listening to the Net yesterday, I was on my beach cruiser fishing in the marina. And Orion, if you're listening, there's a fishing update. Apparently I caught a halibut, which I mistook for a flounder and then a bunch of other smaller fish. I don't even know what they were. I didn't keep anything. But the bite did pick up and it did end up reeling half a dozen fish in.
Speaker D: So that was pretty cool.
Speaker B: All right, you caught yourself a halibut. You just said you didn't keep anything, you threw it back. But kind of fun to fish in the harbor and catch things as you're going around. There's a lot of fish down there.
Speaker C: So, you know, being a California native living in Santa Monica for 25 years and then moving up to Granite Bay, which is where I met the club and joined the group and tested with the group and became a license operator. I've since moved on to the west coast of Florida and I'm loving it here so far. People are great, everybody's fun and friendly and. And it's got a good vibe and a little bit slower pace in Los Angeles. But anyway, so today's plans is I've already been to the groceries and picked up a steak, some fresh brussels sprouts and a potato to bake. And I think I'm just going to stay in and grill and try to avoid watching any football and probably just continue working on. I'm doing the Florida real estate exam right now, so I'm taking the 63 hour course that's required here. Anyway, just for ID. This is KN6YCG.
Speaker B: It sounds like you have a wonderful day planned in sunny and warm Sarasota, Florida. What's it like in the summertime?
Speaker C: Okay, as a native Californian, this is the best I can say. I'm always working on projects. Many Projects are outside the middle of summer in Granite. A could be pretty hot and miserable here. Just plan on being soaked through your clothing if you're working on a project at 10am outside. It's hot, it's muggy. My wife really struggles with it and I'm trying to just get used to it, but yeah, it can get pretty nasty. But luckily I'm not a professional ditch digger, so I can usually avoid it.
Speaker B: Years and years ago I was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines and it could be hot and muggy there. No doubt about it. It would be close to 100 degrees and 90 plus percent humidity and maybe not quite as bad in terms of humidity as Sarasota because you're right on the water, but really bad. It would rain twice a day in the dry season and in the rainy season. The monsoon season would rain all the time, every day.
Speaker C: All right. I'm not sure what that was. Yeah, I like the tropical rain and even my wife and I will typically be out on our beach cruisers almost every day here. And even if it rains, we just duck under some cover, smile and enjoy the tropical rain and the fact that, you know, we're, you know, from the ocean. So let's see. Nothing else I don't think I have for the net. It was good chatting and I think I'm going to load up my cruiser with my disc golf stuff and ride over to the park down the street and go get a little bit of exercise before I do my real exercise, which will be a run little bit later this happening. Speaker B: That wasn't correct, but that's okay. So moving on, what are you up to today?
Speaker D: Well, right now I'm rewiring my moving wires around in my shack trying to get things organized. I just hooked up a new digital SWR meter and waiting on some parts to show up for my terminated folded dipole antenna and just moves me one step closer to being done next. I'm just waiting on the resistor to show up. And other than that, got a lot, not a lot going on. Aries net tonight, 7:30 on the W6ek repeater at 7:30.

Speaker D: Other than that, I'm not doing much for Super Bowl. Going to just enjoy the day. And I'm gonna probably head into the train room here in a little bit and do some more work on the train layout.

Speaker B: This is the first I've heard you have a train room that it's the entire room.
Speaker D: Huh?
Speaker B: It's all trains.
Speaker D: I have an entire room in my house. It is a train layout. It even includes the closet. I've been working on this for the last few years and kind of took a break from it for a little while. And I'm getting back to it and just working on the different towns and the buildings and trying to get it all set up. Getting closer, though, probably in about another. I'm suspecting probably by June I should have a train running on the tracks.
Speaker B: What size train are you running?
Speaker D: This is all HO scale. So this was all my dad's stuff and stuff That I played with when I was a kid and it went into storage when my dad passed away. My mom's like, where does it need to go? And I'm like, well, I'll take it. And so. So this is about 1970s, 1980s technology. So I've been in the process of. So the old systems were DC and I'm converting all the engines to dcc, which means I have to put all new motors in them and rewire them and put controllers in them. This allowed me to run multiple trains on the same track at the same time. And then repairing all the old broken stuff and tracking down the parts.
Speaker B: Well, that is one heck of a hobby to put together. Plus creating the scenery and the hills and whatever else you're doing around it. Love to see some progress on that someday. You know, it's kind of fun to watch. I enjoyed that growing up as well. At friends house. It was always fun.
Speaker D: Yeah. So everything I'm building except buildings for the most part is all home built. All the scenery is home built. A lot of the stuff is 3D printed. So yeah, it's, you know, it's kind of important to me to do this. Once I complete it, I don't know what will happen. But just a great little hobby to have right now. It's very relaxing and stress relieving.
Speaker B: I'll bet it is. And you make a little progress and it starts to build and you've had it for a while but you're back at it again. There's a Zen kind of a feeling when it comes to. Well, this is creative art kind of stuff. Yeah.
Speaker D: And you know, it's kind of a tribute to my dad because it's something he never got a chance to finish. And I really want to finish this and get the train running around. It's really challenging trying to fit modern technology into an older locomotive and trying to find the right parts and having to develop the process with. To do this. Because normally you just have to buy new equipment and I don't want to spend that kind of money. So I'm teaching myself how to work with fiber optics and just rewiring stuff.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's a pretty cool. That's a pretty cool hobby all the way around. You know, I think. Yeah, we know we have some members of the club that have done trains before and of course we have KK7 Air who does the big trains. And he probably does smaller ones as well. But it's always fun. He's probably got some great ideas or could help you solve problems.
Speaker C: If you need it,
Speaker D: you know, and that's the beauty about it. There's a lot of people involved in it. You don't know. There are a lot of closet railroad hobbyists out there. And it's kind of nice. But you know, what's really kind of fun is you develop a problem and you walk away from it and you
Speaker B: think about it and then you get
Speaker D: clarity and you go back and you figure out the problem. You figure it out and solve it. And that's kind of the fun part about all this.
Speaker B: Well, that makes it your project through and through creative and a little engineering. And you put the two together and you solve it in time. It'll never be finished, but it'll be close enough to enjoy.
Speaker D: Exactly. You know, part of the thing is I built part of it and walked away from it and thought about it and thought about it and came back and went, you know, I don't like that. I'll tear it up and start over again on a certain section. And so it's kind of fun. Between that and radios, I don't have a paycheck anymore.
Speaker B: Well, so be it. Scott with no paycheck, he's got stuff that keeps you poor. I guess we all kind of have.

Speaker E: Not a chance. I'll be honest. I have never watched a Super bowl game. Never wanted to. I'll do my best to avoid them.
Speaker B: All right, well, that's you. You don't watch this. Well, you watch some sports. What do you watch? What's your favorite then of the big event?
Speaker E: You know, I don't watch it as much as I used to, but various types of motor racing. And I guess because Christina's really wrapped up in it, I'm going to have to start watching Formula One.
Speaker D: Formula One.
Speaker B: I do find that's one of the things. I haven't gone to a of lot live event for Formula One, but I like Formula One as well. I can't say that I'm a NASCAR fan. I wish I were, but I don't enjoy it as much as Formula One.
Speaker E: NASCAR was fun in the 50s and 60s and early 70s. Then they clamped it down and made everything exciting.

Speaker A: The same and it's no fun anymore.
Speaker B: Yeah, they try and make it, make it fair, no cheating, whatever, but that's part of it. That's part of the game, you know, get it down to the skills of racing. What I actually enjoy watching the most in terms of racing is MotoGP. I've been to quite a few live MotoGP events. I've been to NASCAR live. I've been to. I've not been to a Formula One. I bet I'll enjoy that. But NASCAR, I mean, MotoGP to me is terribly exciting, even on TV.
Speaker A: Well, another one that used to be interesting was IndyCar and now there's a bunch of Hondas driving around here. It's kind of boring.
Speaker B: Yeah, I didn't really. I get into that a little bit. I've been to, well, Sonoma Raceway, that used to be. I can't remember the name of it before. That's a driver's track for nascar. So I've been to that track before and I enjoyed that. Live is totally different than watching it on tv. So if you've enjoyed some, you know, different little sprint car races. I like the sprint cars around the dirt track. That was always fun.
Speaker A: Yeah, Sears Point is what you were trying to say. Yeah, I like dirt track. It just has to be live though. There's no way that can be watched on tv. And then it takes me back to. Oh yeah, I used to drive those things.
Speaker B: I think I remember you mentioning something about that a while ago. I forgot you used to drive. Well, whatever a sprint car was back then.
Speaker A: Oh, what I was racing was what I think now they call them street stocks or something like that. They had to be a real American car body had to have an engine in it. The original motor mounts, carburetion was limited to 14 barrel. Other than that, anything goes. And it did.
Speaker B: It was open category. Yeah, that's going to be fun. There's a few races around the world that do like auto racing if it's on dirt. I think that's probably my, you know, my favorite, the rally cars when they're racing out there. I have. Gives me a heart attack when you're in the first person view. When they have the camera inside the car, they're booking along the way. They are. It's remarkable what they can do.
Speaker A: Yep. And by the way, the guy that was tying up the Internet now legitimately came on and talked. But when that was happening, I think it was just somebody sitting on the microphone because I heard some voices in the background too.
Speaker B: Yeah, I see. I've got to check in here. It could have been some technical thing and it's easy enough to make those errors. Not a big deal. We got it solved and moving on with our day.
Speaker A: Like I said, had to have been, you know, accidentally keyed or whatever. But there were definitely voices in the background.

Speaker C: Well, everything and a lot will stop your heart. Anyway, yeah, we're going to have chicken and we're going to have some barbecued wings and stuff like that. Yeah. So we're going to enjoy that stuff. No beer, no wine. We're not going to bevy and that stuff, but we're just going to have a good time. Our teams are not playing, which is a shame, but we certainly love the Rams 49ers, but they're not in it. So anyway, it is what it is. We'll watch the game and because somebody said we watched the game because of the commercials and not particularly the singing, I don't even know who that person is anyway. Maybe I'm getting too old. Speaker B: Neither did I when I read the question. To be fair, of course, everybody remembers the wardrobe malfunction. But does anyone remember who played?
Speaker D: Yeah, I remember. I think I got up to get a snack and I missed that. But my family thought, my daughter, she saw it. She was shocked.
Speaker B: Yeah. I happened to be watching at a friend's house. They were having the super bowl and they got this huge scream that year, you know, whatever was new at the time. And it was obvious something happened. Big malfunction. Well, we'll find out. Somebody's going to know the answer. Who won that year.
Speaker A: Maybe.
Speaker B: We'll see.
Speaker D: Can I ask you on the you and Ray talking about sprint cars, dirt track cars, when I was growing up in the Valley. Thank you. Growing up just about the same time, maybe a little bit later. I think you're a little younger. Did you ever spend any time at the Madera Speedway?
Speaker B: When I was real little, we went to the Madera Speedway. That was not. I was probably 6 or 7 years old at the time. My grandfather took me and two of his uncles. We went to the speedway.
Speaker D: You'd Go down there on a Saturday evening and it tended to be a family affair. You drag the whole family down there. But they also had a similar track. Speedway and Clovis. Either be one of the two for the Saturday night.
Speaker B: Yeah, I did have some friends that would drive, you know, because I was there. I would spend the summers there a month, maybe two. And I wasn't actually living down there so much, but it was fun in the summertime. And some of the friends that I was with, they. They drove in it. And for some reason I always missed it for, you know, whatever reason, I wasn't able to go and watch them drive. This would have been in high school
Speaker D: when I was selling things, turning wrenches, installing tires at J.C. penning's Auto Sales. While I was in college, one of the guys I worked with, one of the mechanics, decided to build his rent car for his son. And it was interesting watching him trying to break into the local racing. And it was very frustrating for him and his son because we just didn't go out there and start racing with the guys that had been doing it for years. And week after week, they would put him into the wall and take him out of the race just to. Just to show him we're the big dogs, you're the little dog.
Speaker B: Interesting.
Speaker A: So
Speaker B: they were restricting entries into it all. They didn't have a class for him. Maybe there wasn't enough people getting entry to it.
Speaker D: You know, he finally learned that if he was going to do that, if he was going to participate in it, he had to fight his way in, he had to fight back. And I think that's how you earn their respect. I think it was a rite of passage if you wanted to get in that type of race. It was a small circle, small group of guys that did that. But if you sat on the front row, you had to be prepared to go home dirty. Because they would water down the track with a dirt track, clay track, and they'd water down the track. And when the cars came around, if you sitting right up front in the bleachers, you would get a nice coat of dirt when they went by.
Speaker B: Yeah, I remember that. That's a lot of fun watching that. I always like to sit up a little higher so I could see the whole track better. But I remember watching people get sprayed from time to time.
Speaker D: I was going to mention that I know something else about Scott. I didn't know that Scott was into trains. I probably should have known that talking to him. But Scott is also into black powder rifles, muzzleloaders, And I am too. So Scott's got a lot, a lot of hobbies. In addition to being very, very busy in his professional life. He's got a lot, a lot of good hobbies as well.
Speaker B: I can see that. No doubt about it. He's got a lot going on and plenty to. He's not a sit still kind of guy.
Speaker D: No, he's not. You know, I could have been bitten by the train bug, but. And I do have some trains, O scale trains back in Concord storage. But that's another rabbit hole you could fall into that has no end. There's no bottom to that pit.
Speaker B: Well, on the O scale, aren't they larger than the ho or. I'm trying to think of the size.
Speaker D: They are larger. They take up a lot more real estate. The ones you typically see have a 3 rail track because the power flows in the center rail and goes to the two outer rails. That way the train can run either direction. You know, they're not. I've got. Scott would probably like it, give them a picture of it someday. But I have a train that my uncle, I should say my great uncle gave me one time when we were back in Michigan, much to the surrender of my dad. My dad wanted that train and he skipped. My dad gave it to me and my dad was always jealous of that. So after I moved out of the house, the train disappeared. When I went back after I moved into the Bay Area, went back to get the train one day, he said, I don't know what happened to the train. I can't find it. Years later, when I was off the 10 acres, I opened up the trunk on one of the old cars that he never got rid of. There was my train set hiding in the trunk of the car.
Speaker B: Moved it around and it almost was lost forever.
Speaker D: Yeah, I just imagine I could have sold that car. And whoever got this was. It's actually very collectible Lionel trains out of the, I think early 40s. It would have. It would have been a real bonus whoever bought the car when they finally got the trunk open to find the train fit in there. But fortunately I found it and it's on the mantel in Concord. There's a thing called Tubi. I've never used it before, and I hear that the super bowl might be on there. I'm hoping that if it is, that they're carrying all the same commercials and so forth so that I don't miss out. Yeah, and today we're going to make pizzas here. My housemate and I, she doesn't like olives on hers. I like olives on mine. So we're gonna make our own individual pizzas, and that'll be our big. Our big treat for Super Bowl.

With Italian dressing, which I've actually kind of heard of but never actually made. But I hear tell it's really, really good. So that's what we're trying to figure out, Jeff. All kinds of ideas for some good food and just an excuse to. To do nothing but just eat and have noise.

Speaker A: Sunday is the game itself that might

Speaker A: I think it's our excuse to cut loose and have all the fun stuff you normally wouldn't eat.
Speaker C: You know, it's really funny because I.
Speaker A: Football, the big day of football is
Speaker C: what Thanksgiving usually and super bowl is kind of like the culmination of that. And so it's like Thanksgiving 2.0, as it were. As far as the food goes, that's how always viewed it always felt about that. What do you think?
Speaker A: Well, food connects people. We always like sharing meals when we get together. And so that's a human thing. So it doesn't surprise me at all that large events, you know, Thanksgiving and having super bowl on, not super bowl, but the Thanksgiving game makes sense. You know, you're going to have a lot of food when we gather. But Super Bowl Sunday, it's no surprise that food is the. Is the near biggest thing.
Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker B: You know, because it's still cold, it's
Speaker C: still not kind of ideal for barbecue and it's just kind of endorsey kind of thing. And it's just a good excuse to just pig out, in my humble opinion. And nothing wrong with that. Not at all. Like I said, we're. We're just trying to figure out. I've. Somebody was just figuring out. Yeah, Peacock is going to be playing and you can also watch it on KCRA 3 on the antenna if you don't have the connection, if you don't have Peacock or any of the paid services, if you do have an antenna. KCRA, is that NBC? Is it KCRA or Channel 10? I. No, I think it's KCRI, Channel 3 MVC. They're going to be playing as well.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker A: On broadcast it should be. Should be playing locally and I think that is KCRA 3. It seems that changed over the years, but whatever's NBC, Peacock and KCRA should be the local here. I don't know, Nationwide probably. Peacock would be the best way to watch it. But yeah, that's, that's how you can see it. I, I have actually where I'm at, I'm up on a hill and when I have my antenna hooked up to the tv, I can actually reach quite well. The broadcast comes in beautifully.

Speaker C: Yeah, this is Ed, KB6 Ed again, I was mentioning that I cannot get any TV channels here in Rudyard Valley.
Speaker D: We're kind of tucked down in the
Speaker C: hills and I don't know how high I'd have to get a TV antenna to reach Those broadcast channels. But anyway, I appreciate all the ideas
Speaker D: people are throwing around.
Speaker C: I'm sure everybody's going to find their way and I'll find my KB6ed.
Speaker A: Yeah, good luck with that. If you're in a hole, sometimes it makes it difficult depending on where you are and distance. But it's surprising. There are some websites that can give you a clue. You can definitely hook up, you know, your location and the height of an antenna and see what. What direction will give you a signal. It'll even give you an approximate signal report. So you can probably figure it out, but you may have already done that work. Good luck looking online. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Speaker C: I didn't realize he was tucked away on that side. I actually. That's actually the way we watch it here because, believe it or not, it's a little bit better than Peacock. When you get the good signal, the surround sound, it's even better. For whatever reason, I noticed that Peacock sometimes actually cuts up that on the audio. And I don't know, it's annoying given the fact that they're raking in the cash that they have the means. And for some reason, sometimes they end up doing that.
Speaker A: Yeah, I think their system gets overwhelmed with all of the traffic and they don't. Well, maybe they've solved it this year, but in the past, it seems that they've had some problems. We've had interruptions that didn't work out very well. And it wasn't our Internet speed. It was just straight up from Peacock.
Speaker C: Not surprised. I'm not surprised at all. The amount of connection and whatnot. Well, that's pretty much all I have. Jeff, thanks for running the net. Good talk to you. Speaker D: Well, I'm happy to report that I'm
Speaker B: home from the hospital.
Speaker D: They released me yesterday, so I drove myself home and grabbed my prescriptions and been relaxing with my dog.
Speaker A: I know you were in the hospital. My apologies. And I hope you're going to heal well from whatever that they did and hopefully you're able to relax and enjoy your day.
Speaker D: Yeah, I discovered on Monday that I just started having fever and chills and so I went to sleep thinking I was coming down with the flu. And it turns out that, you know, I wasn't getting much better. Started having bad stomach cramps and so I went to urgent care on Wednesday morning and they said I have diverticulitis with a micro fissure and I needed to go to the ER and get intravenous antibiotics.
Speaker A: Boy, when that gets out of control, diverticulitis can be. Yeah, it can get infected and be miserable. So I hope you are feeling much, much better and Good. Good to hear you, actually. Hopefully that is the case. Right, you're feeling better now?
Speaker D: At this point, I am feeling excellent. The intravenous antibiotics did the job. I was in the hospital from Wednesday through Saturday morning, so it took several doses and things like that. But the staff at Rideout Hospital was amazing and we had the greatest time. I made the best of the situation. I believe in the placebo effect and it's working quite well. So I'm just going with it, focusing on healing and eating the right foods and taking my medicines and doing everything that the doctor says. I got to pick a primary physician, so I've been reading over the different doctor profiles and things, trying to find a good general practitioner that also has good knowledge in gastroenterology in the area for Sutter Network. So that's my goal right now. Yeah, it's going great.
Speaker A: Well, no hot wings and beer cheese for you, I think just yet. You'll be eating more of a careful diet that won't cause more infection, I'm sure.
Speaker D: Yeah, it's all low fiber and things, but I've been enjoying a lot of different yogurts and cottage cheeses and fruits and. And things like that. So I made myself a really delicious broccoli and spinach soup last night. It was delicious. I'll probably have that for lunch again today. Yeah, so just a change. Probably a needed change. And yeah, so it's funny because I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy back in 2021 and they said there was no signs of.
Speaker A: Yeah, I've never had an infection and you know, I go through my every. I'm on a five year schedule for colonoscopies. They're not fun. But I'm so glad to hear that you're doing better. And yeah, follow the doctor's advice. I'm sure that's going to make you feel better long term.
Speaker D: Absolutely. Yeah. I scared my kids a little bit having to go into the hospital, but I gotta definitely show them that I'm making the changes necessary as well so they have a little bit of comfort and things with all this. Speaker B: Yeah, in hindsight, that'd be the perfect answer. Anyway. Yeah, so gonna be watching the game, watching the commercials, taking notes, whatever. In the meantime, it's normal Sunday, so I've got laundry to do. We've postponed the chat with the kids till after the game just when I interrupted. And yeah, preparing for tomorrow is a boat day, so gonna be heading back down to the Bay Area and hopefully take the boat actually out out of the slip, around the harbor and back into the real slip. Speaker A: you know, I've seen recently some advertisements for some electronic telescopes. I wonder how good they are by comparison to regular. They probably don't quite compare, but they're very interesting. New little technology coming.
Speaker B: I think you're referring to. There's a couple of them. Oh, one of them starts with a V. It's been after a couple years. Seastar is the most recent from Zwo Chinese company. They got a 50 and a 30. Now, referring to the size of the lens, they actually do surprisingly well. Little robot telescopes. You put them down on the picnic table, push the button, and they open up and they look around the sky and say, okay, I know where I am. You know, gps, hit the clock, get the location, match up the stars with the maps, and then you tell it, hey, go take an image of the Orion Nebula. And it goes, zip, zip, zip, and over there it is, and takes an image and it. It's what's called live stacking. They take really short images, like 10 seconds or less, and then stack them live. So the image kind of develops as you're watching on your tablet or your cell phone, whatever you got connected to it. It kind of develops in front of you. And it takes a little while to get a good image, but it's possible. It just takes a while. The setup that I've got will take the same images, but take them faster and. And I think a little better. Better color, better resolution, less noise, but it's all good. If you don't want to revel in the details of taking and processing images, just want to look at what's out there. Great solutions. They're not expensive. Like under $500ks 60h. Back to you.

Speaker A: light traveling thousands of light years away and actually hitting through the telescope, bouncing off the mirrors and hitting your retina. And there's something about that that just seems really cool
Speaker B: indeed. Yeah, not thousands, millions, millions of light years. The little galaxies and stuff that we look at are long ways away. And some of them, you know, Andromeda's only, what, a couple of million light years? Only a couple. But yeah, it's amazing stuff. There's. If you go on the NC Astronomers YouTube channel, there's actually a presentation on the Sea Star 50 by someone you probably know. I'll out him a little bit here. Mark, our president, actually has one of those. He gave a presentation on it about a year, year and a half ago. So I Recommend taking a look at it. So I can't get any of the over the air channels. But I think it's like Channel 3 is the NBC channel. You go to the website, you do a search for, you know, where do I watch the super bowl? And Channel 10 comes up and says, hey, here's all these Internet places. They don't quite mention that Channel 3 has it. But what's all the streaming, the other streaming options? Oh no, actually what they do is they. They also list all of the bars in the area that you can go visit and watch, you know, as you're. You're having a cold one.

Speaker B: But yeah, I believe it's channel three. If I did my search right, that's the NBC channel and I think that's. If you have over the air, I think that's where it'll come up anyway.
