Speaker C: So for Mountain top the only thing that I have in the ping log just to go through these is at 10:12 yesterday and that would have been in the morning. So there's nothing in the ping log.

Speaker E: Yeah, just an observation that loss of host probably was very similar to the time that the GPS swap out was occurring by Doug. But yes, last evening there were several conversations on the, on the repeater and the last time I had any conversation or heard any conversations about 9pm.

Speaker B: Yeah so it looks like, I mean if I was to look at this log I would say at 7:46 last night we have we lost the master system and we probably had a problem until tomorrow this morning until Doug restarted things. But it sound like you were seeing everything okay except for rtcm so that wouldn't have been the case change.
Speaker E: Yeah, maybe somebody else is monitoring right now that maybe used the repeater after 7:45 last evening. But I believe that even I was using the repeater after that time last evening.
Speaker F: Yeah I wasn't around but I thinking about it. 0400 is 8pm our time so 0400 Zulu is 8pm our time and that seems like the mass is not quite lining up there. It was 19 something in our time.
Speaker E: Yeah, thanks Frank. No it you wouldn't have detected it on your side but yeah 2 UTC was approximately 1 you know 145 to 2 UTC was the time that that Doug was swapping out the gps. Speaker A: Well, when you have a whole group of friends going to dinner, it's always a good idea to make sure they're all going to the same place that Bunny. Nobody gets the. Their feelings hurt wondering why nobody showed up for the dinner and realized that they were in a different location. So I want to know, is this old high school friend a boy or a girl?
Speaker C: It's a guy. And he and I graduated the same year, which was 1992, and he started in 1979. He came over from England. His parents are from India. And so we've been friends ever since high school.

Yesterday, the fine, wonderful folks at Verizon came to my house. Not here, back home, and basically destroyed my entire network infrastructure. And I've lost access to everything. And because of how they did it, there is no way I can get anyone to fix it over there. So I think I'm just kind of out of luck until I get back home. And then they. One of them sent me a text this morning wondering why the network ad blocker I had installed doesn't work anymore. And I'm like, well, gee, I sure wish I could fix that, but you kind of let them destroy my infrastructure, so can't help you there.
Speaker A: Sorry. You know, that's what happens when you let the guy come in who he knows how to do one thing, and if your system isn't set up for that one thing, you're just doomed. Unless you're there. Just tell him, stop, stop, stop.
Speaker B: Yes, indeed. This was there. There's really no place here for guy versus girl. But this was a girl who came in yesterday, they called me, asked me a couple of questions, and then completely discarded everything I told them. So, yeah, fun.
Speaker A: Well, that kind of idiocy is not necessarily restricted to one sex. So, yeah, no Monopoly. I'm very sorry that I expect better of a girl.
Speaker B: Yes, Yes, I would as well. Anyway, I am still raging about that, and there's really nothing I can do about it until I get back home. So.

Speaker B: Yeah, I've used it. I've got a few sources from that, but depending on which library, there's the overdrive thing and then there's. Yeah, there's a couple of ways to do it. So it's not that I'm out of options, it's just that my normal method is currently unavailable and that's kind of thrown my entire system off. And now I have to go and do other stuff. I mean, I'll be fine. It's fine.

Speaker A: Well, I am so sorry. And it has to be terribly frustrating for them to have done something so, so egregious that you can't fix it remotely. Considering the magic that you work remotely, that has to be the worst.

You're flying a drone, you're violating our privacy. I'm not looking at you. You can't win. That's just one of those things. I understand in the Netherlands they've even trained eagles to bring those down. So yeah, watch out for the flying feathered drone. Drone police.

Speaker B: us and he needed some personal time. Daddy was out of town for a few weeks and now he's back this morning. So he got the surprise to see daddy cooking breakfast.
Speaker A: Oh, how about that? Made him glad. How old is your grandson? I should know this.
Speaker B: Well, I had the five year old this time. So the last two days we've been entertaining him. Actually mostly me has been entertaining him and he's gone around and we've done our chores and he helped me work in the backyard and all kinds of stuff.
Speaker D: So he gets paid for that.
Speaker A: Ah, very good. Very good. Yeah, grandkid time is great. There's just a whole different feel about grandkids. You don't really feel like.

Speaker A: It's your job to turn them into responsible, productive adults. You can just have fun with them.
Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, I agree with that. I still feel. I still feel a little responsible to be consistent with what the parents are doing and what they want us to do. So I follow their guidelines, but I can be much, much more relaxed about it. I do enjoy that. And, of course, I also enjoy dropping them back off again.
Speaker A: Yes. As a friend of ours said a grandmother, best day is when the grandkids come to visit, and the second best day is when they go home. So that's also another benefit of grandchildren. Well, very good. I'm glad you had fun. So what do you have planned for today?
Speaker B: I have a landscape architect coming over today, just in a little while here, and to go over what might. What future plans to make that to beautify the yard. The backyard's a mess. And at least do that and come up with a total plan. And so we'll go from there.

Speaker B: You know, this stuff isn't cheap, but it's worth it to have a plan.
Speaker A: Yeah. If you get the plan set up, then you can piecemeal it and. And have everything look relatively cohesive. So that's a good way to start.
Speaker B: That's the idea. There's just weeds everywhere, and I need new retaining walls. We took down the old retaining walls, and then I realized I don't know what I'm doing. I don't really have an end goal. I was sort of working with what I had and thinking I would just
Speaker A: keep it the same.
Speaker B: And then I thought. Or started coming up with other ideas. Well, I just need to hire somebody to give me more ideas.
Speaker A: Yes, indeed. We did that for the front yard, and it's been very nice. The backyard is kind of weeds and. Well, we have a couple of raised beds and then weeds and which we mow. And they're green, so we call them grass and our mandarin trees. So that's just kind of our backyard.
Speaker B: Well, I haven't even mowed the weeds now. It's going to take some big weed eating and lots of labor. So once I have a plan, we'll start that work. And I don't know how much I'll get done before I go off to
Speaker C: the pct, But I'm going to do
Speaker B: some training today also go for a hike and get ready for that. And I'll see what it is today. I don't even know what day it is.

Yes, the five year olds are fun but very energetic and which is one one issue with the grandparents is that, you know, we love them in small doses but oh gosh, we're glad to send them home and take a nap. Speaker A: Well, you know, that's a terrible fate to not have enough projects to do. Well, get to making your projects and bagging up all the little pieces that don't that are going to go wandering away and falling down behind the desk drawer or things like that so that you can find them again.
Speaker C: Yes, and I always have an optimistic view about complex situations and discussions and things like that that they need to help because I found that if you wait that extra day, sometimes they partially resolve themselves. Speaker B: We will clean up the house. I didn't know that it extended to brother in laws as well. But you know what? I joke around. I volunteered for the this. It's not that bad. I enjoy doing it. I have the radio going on in the background, listening to everybody have for a couple of days, got the music playing in here. One thing Ray did have was a great system. So the tunes have been flowing. And while they're dealing with all of the paperwork stuff that I want absolutely nothing to do with, I get to do this. So some people may think I have the short end of the stick, but I enjoy it.
Speaker A: Oh, I'm with you. I would rather be doing the cleanup and not having to scratch my trying to figure out all the ins and outs of estates and all that other garbage. Christina and Steve have my deepest sympathy.
Speaker B: Yeah, they're definitely. I still say I got the better end of the deal. Yeah, they're joking aside, they're getting through it. They're slowly but surely. We've kind of hit a point where we can't do much, much more until we get some paperwork back from the mortuary and stuff like that. So it's kind of a break. Christina decided to go into the office and work a half a day, which she said was kind of interesting because it's the first time she's been in there in literally a year. It's weird to think that we moved away about nine days ago, 10 days ago, a year ago.
Speaker A: Well, you know, it either seems like just day before yesterday or forever ago.
Speaker B: Yeah, it was weird coming back. We had to go to Santa Rosa yesterday for a little while. And being that I worked for four years in San Leandro and took that drive, well, part of that drive back every day. It was amazing how once I got back on 80 or 880 or whatever it is, one of the 80s, my brain just kind of went into autopilot. I stopped looking at the directions and just was able to drive to get back here. Her parents live about three blocks away. From where we used to live, mom and stepdad. So it was really, it was just autopilot back home. I mean, we did live here for nine years and it was only a year ago we went and we've been doing our tour of favorite places to eat that we don't have in Tennessee while we've been here. So that's been at least one enjoyable break from all of this extra stuff.
Speaker A: Well, yes you do. You look for the good moments where you can so. And muscle memory does apply to driving directions too.
Speaker B: Yeah, it was weird because when I sat and thought about it yesterday after we got back home, I was like, man, this was the first time. I was probably awake during that drive doing 24 hour shifts and everything. I was usually zombie coming home. Which in retrospect was probably not the best thing in the world. Good thing for muscle memory. I had a friend once that called it time traveling.
Speaker A: Oh yeah. It's kind of scary when you get
Speaker C: to some place and you think, I
Speaker A: don't remember getting here. I remember getting in the car and here I am and I don't remember anything in between. And that is scary.
Speaker B: Yeah. I remember one instance when I was still working at Disney. I had a stick shift vehicle. I remember getting off of a 12 hour shift or actually it might have been even longer than that. It might have been a 20 hour shift and taking the bus to the employee parking lot. I remember getting in the car and saying I am too tired to drive home and putting the seat back and like I'm just going to take like an hour nap. Which wasn't technically allowed but we usually could get away with it. The guard who was working too much and I remember putting the seat back and I remember closing my eyes and then I remember opening my eyes, sitting up and I was in my parents dress driveway. That scared the literal crap out of me. I was shaking when I got out of the car because I thought I was waking up in the employee parking lot and I woke up 45 miles of three freeway changes later.
Speaker A: Wow, that was scary. Well, we look forward to seeing you and Christina and Steve tonight. It's probably going to be a madhouse, but it will be a good time and there will be, like I say, lots of tears, lots of laughter and we will honor Ray and that's great that we're all having that chance to come together as a community.
Speaker B: Yeah, it was funny. Christina and I were talking about it and we were like, whether there's five of us or 50 of us, it'll be a Madhouse. Because those of us that would be going are a little bit on the cuckoo side of normal anyways. But yeah, we're really looking forward to it. Stephen, surprisingly, is really looking forward to it. He keeps just saying over and over again that he's blown away with how, how much unity has been around Ray and everything because he's, he didn't really grow up with his dad being around. He, he moved out when he was 16, Steven moved out when he was 16. So he, he didn't really know that side of Ray enough to know that people cared about him and all that fun stuff. So it's, it'll be really awesome to get him in the room with a bunch of people who, you know, actually cared.
Speaker A: Oh, well, I know that Ray was really proud of Steve and enjoyed his time, the times that he got together with him. So yes, that will be a great thing.
Speaker B: Yeah. So like I said, we're looking forward to it. I'm excited to see everybody there. Plus the food ain't half bad, so that's a positive. Anyways, I gotta get back to work. I fly out tomorrow afternoon so there's only so much more time that I can be a muscle. Christina's gonna stay for probably another week, but we'll, we'll figure that stuff out. Weather for California, you're going to have some beautiful weather. So you know, it's going to be absolutely fantastic today, tomorrow and Saturday. So for the, for the Fox Hunt on Saturday would be really some ideal weather. Temperatures in the 70s in the valley. Of course not as early as you have that, but still, you know, nighttime temperatures have been rather warm, you know, and even with the fog that's been around in the valley, temperatures have been above normal. It's been 50s and foggy because the dew points are in the 50s. And you know, that high pressure area out over Baja California has pushed north. And as it's done so it's locked in some moisture that came in from the tropics the other day, some rain to some areas and high elevation snow. But it locked in that warmer kind of tropical air. And it's, and you know, temperatures this morning have been in the 50s in the valley, going to get up into the 70s today once that fog all burns off. Now there is a dense fog advisory in the southern Sacramento, northern San Joaquin Valley, but it won't last all day. It'll burn off in the nice sunshine. You'll see that strange looking ball that's in the sky.
Speaker A: And
Speaker C: I think as you know, we get toward March, as we get toward March, you know, the days get longer, the nights get shorter and we're going to lose that fog because it just does. There isn't going to be enough time during the night pretty soon for it to really develop. So that's something to look forward to. Let me take a break.

Speaker C: On Sunday there's an upper level, what we call an upper level devil, an upper level closed or cut off low pressure area that could bring some showers and thunderstorms over the Sierras and at the same time it could bring a chance of some rain even to the valley.
Speaker B: Not a lot.
Speaker C: I don't think it's a big deal. But Sunday and Monday and then high pressure will kind of rebuild and the 6 to 10 and 8 to 14 day outlook calls for above normal temperatures and below normal precips. So you know what? Spring is on the way. I wouldn't say, say put the winter clothes away quite yet because March is a funny month and so can be April, but I think you're on the downward side now and things are going to get warmer if for no other reason because the length of day changes. So hopefully this spring we'll see some rain. April is one of those months where we can go either way. What I need to know before you tell me about the weather in Tennessee is do you have available to you rainfall and accumulation total so we know how we're doing compared to last year or how our rainfall is doing compared to normal, that type thing? That would be interesting to know.
Speaker C: You know what, I had a hard time getting that information even when I lived in California. I think you guys are a little below normal. Although I don't have exact totals. I need to work on getting that. Jerry, that, that would be good. But being a weak La Nina year, you actually aren't doing too bad, especially with the snow. That's more important than the rain. And there was parts of the Sierras that got.

Speaker A: Four and five feet of snow last week and that was kind of a saver, you know, and hopefully, hopefully you'll get some good rain yet in March and April. But this is the time of the year. Now, my grandfather used to say if you didn't get it in February, you didn't get it at all because now is the time when rainfall totals really start declining from March on. There, there. Go ahead.

Speaker A: I think I read somewhere that even though there was a lot of snow in depth, it was a very cold, very dry snow. Water content.
Speaker B: Okay, well, the water content, the snow is one thing.

Speaker B: Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doubling. Mark, I saw a number on the news the other night, Channel 40 news, and he said we were 104% of normal. But what he didn't tell me is that 104% of where we normally are today or is it 104% of our yearly total? You know, it always leaves me wondering a little bit we're going to have water for the summer. I have no doubt about that, but it's always good to know. And Mark, believe it or not, they're actually about to start building a new reservoir here. Who ever heard of such a thing, huh? Cites reservoir S I T Z E S Seitz Williams. Speaker A: Yeah, from what I understand, if you're at 104%, you're in good shape. You're in, you're in, you know, if you're above your normal for the season, you're at 100, and that's for the given season. So actually, this was kind of a wetter La Nina. It came with a big dry spell, a couple of big dry spells, but that's normal. And that's why you had so much fog in the Valley, because you had so much rain early and then. And the reason Chuck was, was as good as he was is because of the high pressure, an inversion layer that's ducting, and that happens during the summer and also during these spells of higher pressure and light winds. So that's the deal. Now for back here, it's also warming up. There's a. Daniel could get. I think there was a little light snow back in Illinois early this morning that's going on into Ohio, and there could be another system for late Saturday and Saturday night. And now they're trending that further south into south southern Illinois. So the entire area could be in for some snow over the weekend and a little bit colder temperatures, and then it's going to warm up next week. In fact, warmer conditions are kind of taking over the entire nation. And it's a battle between cold air and warm air. We got to be careful of that because the battle between two air masses can lead to one of two things. Freezing rain in places where there's cold air and warm air mix. And it can also lead to severe weather depending on how great the battle is between the air masses. And Daniel, you had some of that in parts of Illinois last week. Ryan hall covered that. Let me take a break. And so that is, you know, with the warmer temperatures coming, there's a price tag that can be watched. And so there are signals for that change in the season. And that's when severe weather can happen even down here in Tennessee, the Mid south, especially, especially in the Deep South. So got to be on a lookout for that. Nothing is being forecasted right now, but it is being forecasted that next week, middle of the week, there could be some heavier rain and also some temperatures in the 60s and 70s and stuff we haven't heard of in a while. But you might even get a good day for a poda. There might even be some good weather for a PODA coming. So there you go. That's kind of what I'm hearing. And it looks like the sun just came out here. We had a half inch of rain here and so we're. It looks like we're going to have a nice day. It looks like sun's coming out. That's it for me. And I don't want to. I want get Daniel in here. Somebody that reached out to me after a couple of classes and asked for some mentorship is a Mac person and not a Windows person and the software for the Anytone Radio that he purchased, which I've also got one so that helps. Does not natively play with Windows or with Mac. So I've been trying to figure out how to get it to work for him. Might wind up playing around with Chirp as well, but trying to find a path for him. He was saying he was going to find a cheap Windows laptop and I'm like, look, we can find another way around this. I'm trying to keep from having to go buy something that he shouldn't need to buy.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm scratching my head on that one. Your Anytone Radio, you're able to use Chirp software to program from you. Are you using Windows or Mac?
Speaker C: I programmed it using Windows. I've got Windows, Mac and Linux here in my home. I'm one of these people that is the best system for the job. He's Mac only. So what I'm doing is recreating everything I did on my Mac and trying to find something I can walk him through remotely. So no, I didn't default software, but I may wind up falling back on Chirp if I cannot figure out how to create com ports under Wine under macOS.
Speaker B: Surely there's some Mac Facebook page or something where you can post a question like that. Is there anybody listening here on the coffeebake. Net who knows the answer to Dan's query? How do you define com port on a Mac?
Speaker C: A I6US comment.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm surprised, Daniel, that we didn't get an avalanche. Go ahead, Brian. Yeah, maybe a solution would be one of those.
Speaker C: What are they? Bluetooth dongle K1 programming ports, you know, because if the software is working but the port is not being established, that Bluetooth K1 device probably would do the trick. AI 6 US.
Speaker B: Yeah, what do you think, Dave?

Speaker B: Well, very good. Thanks, Brian. I appreciate the thoughts. And Danielle, it's nice of you to help the fellow out. I will admit that I am not an Apple expert, although I do have an Apple iPhone.
Speaker C: I've been using Macs at work for the last, oh gee, 15 years. I've really come to enjoy them. I've got my stock software that I install on them within a few minutes of getting my hands on a Mac. And so it's nice to be able to say to people, look, I'll figure out the solution for your particular os. I'm not one of these people who are Windows only or Linux only or Mac only. As I said, I try and use the right tool for the job or make what's available there. I haven't done much radio on a Mac, but I'm tempted to actually hook it up to my icon 7300 and play around with it. Just more out of a hey, look, I got it to work approach.
Speaker B: Yeah. So you're an AM or FM type guy. Well, that's impressive. Years ago I was making my own computers and then I was stationed in Washington D.C. and my boss and I went down to the Federal Computer Show. This would have been about 1988 or 89 and it was the first time I got introduced to Windows and Mac and whatnot. I went up to the Apple Pavilion and they had these beautiful monitors with color and whatnot. I was quite impressed. And then I found out that to use those you could only use their software and it cost a lot of money. And of course all the rest of the place was filled up with Windows type people and DOS people and the knockoffs and so forth, and they were just a fraction of the price of the Windows. So I went with Windows and. And you know, once you start down one path, you tend to stay with it. So, you know, I really, I never had an Apple computer, just the iPad and iPhone. So yeah, good luck with that.
Speaker A: Well, when he said he was Mac
Speaker C: only, I, you know, I pointed out
Speaker A: to him that I gave the class
Speaker C: from a Mac and was more than willing to try and work on the solution for him before he tried to throw money at it. And of course the fun part about that is I'll learn a bit more about the system as well and maybe come up with a solution that can help other people. Brian, like I said, I'll look into that particular solution. I'm trying to do it purely in software, so he's not throwing any money at solution, but I'll see what can be done.
Speaker B: Okay, quick question for you, and this is not meant to be facetious. Have you tried asking Chat GPT this question?
Speaker C: An answer there seem to sync up with some things I found online. So I will throw it@chat GPT and see what it comes up with. No, you're not. I don't think you're facetious at all. Sometimes you wind up looking at everything but the 1:3 solution or the one webpage or the one AI solution that gives you the answer.
Speaker B: Yeah, this is WA6E. A few days ago I was working on a spreadsheet and I was trying to make data flow from one cell to another and had to do a Lot of manipulation to it. And I used a version of Excel that's from 2003 and the reason is I don't want to use a subscription service. I just want to buy the software and use it until hell freezes over. So I'm still using it. I went on a chatgpt and said how do I do this? And it came back and said write this in this cell. That was a big long equation and functions and whatnot and it would have taken me ever to research that I just copied and put in there. It works. So I'm quite impressed with that service.
Speaker C: I've used Chat GP to generate software from time to time, generate some programs. I've never had it generate a program that I could run without a fair amount of editing. It'll get me 80% of the way there but I find that the other 20% I've got to finish up. When I wind up doing that, I've used it for QA of software just, you know, so, so I can get a QA of the workflow before I deploy and have used AI in building out some radio stuff. But I, I will definitely keep that in mind and give it a shot and see what happens. But other than that it's just going to be a good radio and cat filled day. So I think, definitely looking forward to it and hoping we don't get too much snow here. It's, it's. I looked at the weather for Monday and was. It was like, yeah, that's borderline. I'm not sure I really want in that. But we'll see what happens come Monday. I just want to be ready for it. Regardless, I should pass it on. It's always a pleasure, Jerry. Jerry. Speaker C: I am in northern Illinois. I am in Joliet, Illinois which is one of the far southwest suburbs of Chicago. So it's about a 50 mile drive in my suburb is the last stop on the Metro train and I picked this suburb when I decided to buy a house because it was.

Speaker B: I was skydiving at. I thought my job could change, but I'm going to keep skydiving. And that wound up ending when my son was about 2 years old. Not because I was afraid of suffering, suffering from sids, but more he was getting up and walking around and starting to be a hazard to himself and others at the drop zone. And I could either skydive or I could be with him and I picked him. And I've never regretted that.
Speaker C: Oh, I didn't know you did skydiving, but I understand.
Speaker D: Yeah.
Speaker C: I would also be concerned about now having a son and you gotta make sure that he has a father around to grow up. Skydiving is somewhat unforgiving of mistakes. I know where you are.

Speaker C: quite a bit, had a cousin live in. So we would go out there and enjoy the snow at Thanksgiving.

Speaker E: Yeah, Houston. When I think of Houston, I think of humidity and traffic. And so living out in the area where you are now sounds like an absolutely wonderful change.

Speaker E: You know, honestly, I don't remember seeing artichokes in the grocery store recently, so I have to pay attention. I don't think I've cooked an artichoke in, I don't know, months. So I will try that. I got an instant pot recipe for it where you put them on a rack and put the water in under it. And it's supposed to work great. So I will try that out when I see an artichoke in the grocery store.

Speaker G: Well, I'm glad for that comment because that's my next adventure with the artichoke is in the instant pot. And 12 minutes sounds. I was going to give it about 15 minutes, but I'm going to try 12 minutes. And you know when the leaves separate easily, you know that that's cooked. And I swear to you that I recently told you that I cooked artichokes in my slow cooker and on high. And they were wonderful. And yes, there are jokes in the grocery store. I don't know Winco. At least where we shop we find artichokes.
Speaker E: Well, maybe I just haven't paid much attention to that, so I will go check that out because we do like artichokes. I had never eaten one until I married Jerry. And I think we were visiting his parents and his mother cooked artichokes. And I thought people eat that. But I have become a convert.

I didn't notice it at first, but Edward pointed out to me, and I walked over and looked at that dog sitting on the table, walking around the table top, and I asked the owner if. If that was a rat. I didn't mean to insult him in any way, but I'm telling you, it's.

Speaker B: Look it up on the web or on YouTube and you'll see how small they are.

Speaker B: And the dog was very well behaved. Wasn't excitable or anything. Just calm and walked over and smelled my hand. And the owner said, sit. And that little puppy wasn't. Puppy. It was actually three years old.
Speaker A: I was going to ask if you were sure it wasn't a puppy, because we were at some gathering. RV gathering. And the animal shelter people came and. Because, of course, sometimes they get people who want to adopt a dog. And the people across from us were, oh, no, no, no, we're not even looking. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And then the next thing we know, the guy's carrying around this Chihuahua puppy, which was about the size of a nickel. And how are you going to make sure that you don't step on that? But, yeah, those are. The puppies are teeny tiny. So I will look up miniature Chihuahua.

Speaker A: November 6th. Well, there you are. So what's up for your day today?
Speaker C: Well, my parents came in town yesterday, my sister comes in town today, and my youngest daughter gets married tomorrow. So originally I was. Well, we, we had some luggage crisis yesterday and a rental car crisis yesterday. So we got all that sorted out. Typical. Typically the way these things go, right. And then the chaos in the house is getting a little crazy. So I have a car full of flowers and I'm gonna go do a PODA and just relax and let the chaos sort itself out. I got my schedule, I got my checklist, I know what I gotta do. And I'm going to escape the, the craziness of the family for just a brief moment, get some radio time in and then about one o' clock the chaos will start again.
Speaker A: Oh my goodness, yes. What fun. We went through that with both of our daughters where there was a lot of chaos. Fortunately, we really weren't responsible with either of them. A whole lot of stuff other than providing the money. So that, that was much more relaxed.
Speaker C: Yeah, well, we helped out there too. We gave him a budget because this stuff gets crazy expensive and we say, here's your budget and anything you do that's over that you do it however you want. We gave him an option. We say, you know, you actually could
Speaker B: use this money and put a good
Speaker C: size down payment on a house and do a smaller wedding or you can use it however you want. And they chose to do a wedding, my wife and I, and I don't know, I mean, We've been married 35 years together for 36, so it's hard to say what we would do too. But I don't know, nowadays stuff is so expensive and it's hard for me to stomach seeing that much money go to one day. Although it's a beautiful day, amazing day. We did the same thing for my middle child. She got married two years ago and then my oldest will be getting married in probably another two years. So. But anyway, it's, you know, it's their day, they can do it the way they want. But that was, that was my initial thought. But yeah, it's. I don't know, I guess it's different. Like I'm emotional, you know, it's my little girl. I was emotional when my middle child got married. They're my little girls and now somebody else is technically really responsible for them and you have to let them go and do their thing. Of course, we've been kind of doing that since I went to college and everything else, but I don't know, it's like the final deal, right?
Speaker A: Yep. You're a little girl. Jerry's Facebook picture is of him and our younger daughter. The father daughter dance at her wedding and they're both just sobbing and it's. Yeah. Jerry says he's Mr. Tough Guy. He doesn't cry at weddings. At his daughter's wedding, he. He is such a softie. It's a great picture. Well, I am sure that it will be a wonderful event. You've gotten all the disasters out of the way and you're gonna have just a great day and weather is beautiful for it tomorrow.
Speaker C: Yeah, we got fortunate. Of course I watch the weather because I part of the NorCal Skywarn group there and one of the founders of the NorCal Skywarn organization. And I tell you what it was, I just wasn't sure how it was going to go. I mean, we had contingent plans and we, we had tents ready to be rented and that crew was awesome. They said they could get it set up in a couple hours. Of course then we would have to do all the tables, but, you know, it all worked out. It's going to be a beautiful wedding, a beautiful weekend, and we don't have any weather coming in and it's be to going be nice and warm. The photos are going to look great. So I'm really excited about once the event kicks off after that it's all fine. It's just. And honestly, I think a lot of the chaos is just not necessary. But I'm a guy, so I have a different perspective. I noticed that all my girls and my wife have, you know, their, their thing going and then all of us guys, the grandfathers and the fiance and the other husband, you know, we have a different approach and we're more relaxed. I will say this though, the difference between maybe my group planning a wedding and let the women do it is we would have lawn chairs and pizza and it just wouldn't be that awesome. And when you let the women get involved, they just are freaking amazingly talented and put together floral things and they know how to do the table things.
Speaker B: And you know, I'm not speaking for
Speaker C: all guys and all women, but I'm saying in my family and my group, we would not have a really pretty amazing photogenic videography worth wedding if it was us putting it together. So I am very grateful for the skills and the talents and the differences between the two.
Speaker E: Good morning, Jimmy, this is WA60. I understand what you're saying. My role in it was just to provide the money. But the girls did a good job and they were very conscientious about the expense of it. You can spend untold sums of money on a wedding. I mean, if you saw that movie Crazy Rich Asians, you saw a good example of that. So they did a good job and they were just as married as if it had been done in a cathedral. While I'm talking to you, I went over to your QRZ webpage and my goodness, you got a lot of photos in here of you on the air. It looks like out in the desert, up in the mountains. A lot of them look like they were taken down near Folsom Lake. You have a nice looking set up there.
Speaker C: Yeah, it's kind of my thing. It's my mental health spot. I used to ride a bike all the time to get out in nature and then started operating radio because my knees out. And when I'm done with the radio, I literally turn it off and just relax. And so that's how I get out in nature. The other, other reason all the time is my noise. Floor at the house is so loud I can't use hf. I didn't realize it was that noisy because when I first started HF, it was 2024 somewhere or. Yeah, somewhere around there or a little bit before that was the end of 2023 and you know, everybody was 10 over. And then when the band conditions changed and the solar cycle began to shift, I began to realize, oh crap, I got a terrible noise for it. And so I go out and operate all the time. But yeah, we do a lot of traveling. And so I get an opportunity to hit a lot of different locations. And I tell you, I really, really enjoy it.
Speaker E: Well, that's good. I'm looking at a picture of you in the car here with your radio beside you on 14.317. So I take it when you're putting. You're not doing cw.
Speaker C: I'm working on cw. One of the things I have, I have some ear damage and tones are really hard for me to hear. And so depending on. And I'm starting to play around with the frequency settings to where. I mean, it's not going to be good to someone else's ears, but I can hear it. And so I'm working on that. And I really want to do CW. I'm really getting into the 10 watt, 5 watt operations, and it's a lot of fun and SSDs, it's okay. But CW is more reliable and it's a whole other language, and I'm really excited about learning that. But, yeah, that's next on the list. I got. I think it's called CWmania that on the phone. It's an app where you can play games and instead of thinking of Diz and DAHs and you can, you just start recognizing letters, words and numbers.
Speaker E: Yeah, that's true. I do a lot of FT8 and I see the CQ poda on there all the time. So FT8 is another alternative for you.
Speaker C: Yeah, and I do a lot of FT8 too. I know that a lot of us like the sideband, and so FT8 doesn't get utilized in here particularly. So I do a lot of FT8 as well. A lot of times I'll do a dual activation where I'll do an activation on single sideband and then go ahead and switch to FT8 so the guys who don't do sideband can also get the part. Oh, very good.
Speaker E: That's only fair. Were you at our Christmas party last year?
Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, I was there. I was there for the last two years. Okay.
Speaker E: For some reason, one of the questions I had on the trivia contest, I was going to repeat it to you here, except you know the answer. And the question was, if you're. Even if you're not a CW addict, when you hear this on cw, what's the mandatory response? Do you remember that question?
Speaker C: I was going to say, yeah, I went to the North Hills Club. Didn't go to the W60. I am a member of the club, but no, I didn't make it there. So I don't know the answer to the question.
Speaker E: Well, the question was, when you hear this on the air, what's the mandatory response? And it's da dit, dit, da dit or N, E, N. And everybody was scratching their head. People were complaining that they didn't do cw. And so I sent it to them, and it was.
Speaker C: Is that the song? Is that what that is? It's a song tone?
Speaker E: No, it's. It's. You hear this on CW all the time at the end, it's like shaving a haircut. And so what's the answer, Jimmy?
Speaker C: Giving a haircut Any in?
Speaker B: I don't know.
Speaker E: You need to know. They'll send you. And you send back dead, dead.
Speaker B: Okay.
Speaker C: All right. Well, I I guess I'll get it somewhere down the line.
Speaker E: Surely you've heard that old phrase, shave at a haircut, Two bit.
Speaker C: Okay, now I get it.
Speaker B: Two bits, two ditch.
Speaker C: Okay, I get it now.
Speaker E: Okay. Maybe you better stay on site.
Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, I don't. That does not resonate with me, but I. I get it. All right, well, very good.
Speaker E: Anyway, I was enjoying looking through all the pictures you had here, even out at the beach. I like that little antenna. Looks like a screwdriver.
Speaker C: Yeah. So that's a Wolf river coil, and I like that one because it takes up very little real estate. And all I got to do is throw a Faraday cloth out. So the only. Only wires I actually have coming off of it would be the coax. And then I got an RF meter I take with me, a digital one. Well, it checks all kinds of radiation, whatever does it all. And I set that on the table to see how close I can get it to me without radiating any harmful rf. And what I found is my cell phone puts off more harmful radiation than my antennas ever do.
Speaker E: Well, different bands. If you get that antenna situated you right, it'll heat up your ham and cheese sandwich for lunch. What do you use for an offset other than the coax?
Speaker C: Yeah, that's all you need. The only offset is the Faraday cloth. So you put the Faraday cloth down, and that replaces the ground radial. The entire antenna system is aluminum with a steel whip. And so the aluminum, the three legs, are enough contact on the Faraday cloth to get a really good tune until you get above 40 meters. It's a very resonant antenna. And so your offset is actually the Faraday cloth. It acts as the other part of the antenna.
Speaker E: I'm looking at your antenna out here on the beach somewhere, and I see that cloth underneath it. Until you mentioned that just now, I really didn't even know what a Faraday cloth was. But it provides some sort of a counterpoise, doesn't it?
Speaker C: Yeah. You know, I've been trying to find someone who has added that to modeling, and they have not done it yet. I know the military knows how it works, but there's no models to show you what it does. You know, where the magic happens on the radiation pattern. But I know from using radials to go switching to that verteclop, but it's. It made a tremendous difference. And even receiving contact, you can Hear a good S2 units between throwing down a Faraday cloth and throwing down ground radials. And the other thing is, it has a reflective Property. So there is no ground transfer, except for on the far fringes. You know, the edges of it, there are. There is no. No energy can pass through it. That's the whole purpose of a Faraday cloth. So the theory is that it actually is radiating more energy up than it would, you know, through any other means. But then again, I don't know what that radiation pattern looks like. Is it clean, is it not? I'm going to guess it's clean. Really good contacts on that antenna setup. As good as I get on my photo performer. So I'm really happy with it. I just wish that there was a way to not just know something's automatically working. I'd like to be able to model it and see what else you could do with Faraday cost.
Speaker E: That would be fun.
Speaker C: Also, does it work better in one
Speaker E: direction if you move your antenna to one edge of the cloth versus the other? Of course, when the bands are propagating, it doesn't make much difference. It would be fun to be able to model it, but I'm thinking of Ray KK 6am he'd probably say model Schmodel. Who cares? Move the antenna around. If it works, be happy and go with it.
Speaker C: Yeah, with the modeling helps you kind of know what to try, right? It doesn't mean don't try stuff. It just gives you a better idea what to expect, you know? What I found is the center. Putting it in the center and then pointing the cloth the length of the cloth, making it, like, typically, I'll point
Speaker B: it east, but I do know from
Speaker C: watching what I call the propagation or contact propagation map. Like, that's the map where you look, look at when you're done, where are all my contacts made? That thing is like a needle. So there is gain. So wherever I end up, what direction I. Whether I go north and south or whether I go east and west, whatever direction I point, that that is where I get the most contact. And it's very. It's a very recognizable pattern, you know?

Speaker A: From day to day or even day, even hour to hour. So I'll run, because I do a lot of experimenting. So I'll run it one hour one way, and I'll flip it and go the other way.
Speaker B: And there's a.
Speaker A: There is a noticeable pattern. And people can say that, you know, all the band conditions could have changed to this, that. Well, when you're out there every day doing a PODA and you're playing around with this stuff, the patterns don't shift that much, even though the band conditions are a lot different. You may not make as many one way or the other, but that directional pattern of where you are getting the most contact stays pretty consistent. I tried an X formation too. That worked miserably. So for me, what I found works best is cloth and pointing the direction that you want to talk.
Speaker B: This is WA6E. To some degree that makes sense to me, the purpose of a ground plane is to pull the signal down towards the horizon and less towards the sky. And so, you know, you're pulling the signal down towards the horizon in the direction you got that cloth laid out.
Speaker A: So that makes sense.
Speaker C: Well, have a great day.

We sometimes do portable operations. I go up to Canada Hill and do usually the spring VHF or the June VHF contest from up there. And then we usually will do the California Cuso party up there. And then sometimes you might catch us up there for other events, just dry camping or that sort of thing. But yeah, very good. Yeah. Had a couple HAM Radio ops stop by. You wouldn't happen to be the gentleman that his daughter was driving? Yeah, that was me. That was it. Yeah, she's. She's on her own now, driving down to the college every two days. So she. Yeah, that was when she was kind of first learning. I wanted her to, you know, show her what the mountain roads were like before she went up on her own. Very smart. So that, that one and a half lane section right down there between Fort Point and Canada Hill, that will. If she could overcome that one, she's good to drive on her own. Yeah. I'm surprised how stressful it is teaching a kid to drive. I've taught flying just in smaller planes for years, but I've never ever been as stressed doing that as I was teaching my daughter to drive a car. And it's not because she's bad at it, it's just because you got people going past you at 120 miles an hour, five feet away and there's just all kinds of things, pedestrians and you never know what she's going to do. I was really surprised how Tough that was. Yeah, no, I think getting her up on those back roads and kind of developing her confidence around the no guardrails and you know, it keeps you really alert, you know, looking multiple heads, turns ahead to make sure no traffic is headed your way. And I think that's a great confidence builder up there. And yeah, it's probably more of the city driving. You know, if I think back many years, it was the parallel parking that scared the pajeebis out of me when I was going to take my test. Oh, very good, good to do. And do you go by Steve or Steven? Just Steve. Steve. So yeah, they don't make them do that on the test anymore. So I don't know if she could do it. I, I probably should coach her up on that. I got like, like 10 projects in the garage right now and all these ARCOMs, it's. The ARCOMs have, there's like three or four bugs in them that we're trying to, trying to get out of them. And I literally just two hours ago got a, got a firmware update. So I can't wait to try this thing and find out what new bugs are there. Yeah, we've really, you know, I stripped the heck out of it. You know, basically just use it as a single port now. And yes, you were right, the ID is coming off of the, off of the arcom. So yeah, if that's what you or I checking. But yeah, the, the courtesy tones are coming off of the, off the Raspberry PI running ham voip and that's going to be moved over to ASL3 shortly. But yeah, we're moving the whole system completely over to, over to the All Star system and use that as the repeater controller because all of our receivers are running through a voter system now. And so that's where you're getting the delay because currently proof of concept we did all of our voters via public Internet. And the next phase will be to do a point to point IP system for bringing them back into the master system. You know the thing that amazes me about the All Star stuff is how good the audio sounds. You know, we've got a bunch of connections, well a few connections to our Mount Vaca stuff and I really can't tell that they're coming in on that. It's pretty incredible. So the repeater has been in the current location in Auburn for probably since. I was thinking it was sometime in the 80s and so that's where the transmitter is and antenna at about 65 above elevation with no receivers on location. So we were able to kind of get a little bit more power up to the point with, you know, with the no need of a cavity there. And then our voter receiver, we have one at the Georgetown airport, one at Mountaintop, and then another one down in Rockland, south part of Rockland. So, hey, pleasure. I got that far, it talks to the hardware. Okay, My problem is I am not getting any kind of radio output. In other words, on the, the local radio side, okay, it is not responding, nor is, nor is it making any kind of transmission that I could detect. And I sent an email to Jerry, but he hasn't responded yet. Sort of, kind of getting a little bit, a lot of money invested here. Sort of, kind of getting a little bit. We'd like to get this going and you know, so far his instructions were good, but it's not making, it's not making output. Speaker A: Well, I believe I am. I had, you know, he registered and you know, I'm a current All Star user and you know, he, Jerry pre programmed it. It recognized, you know, it recognized my, my router, my server, you know, it did all that. We put the, the, we put the, the key code in and it did all that. And you know, then it recognized the hardware. And in fact if I go and I, I listen to it, it's telling me, it's telling me about the history. In other words, it's telling me that there was activity on here, you know, and stuff like that. So it's the hardware and the app is receiving information, but it's just a radio, you know, it's just, I'm not getting, you know, in other words, like I'm used to like an All Star node. When like you power it up, it would normally come up and say like IP block, you know, you know, 192.168, you know, kind of thing or something similar to that. And it's not talking at all.
Speaker B: So you're not getting an ID to the Radio from the, from the
Speaker A: Raspberry
Speaker B: PI or the clear node.
Speaker A: Is that correct? That is correct. That is correct. Now I just hang on a minute because I just hear. You could probably hear me. A Siri read notifications one from clear node. That just came from my clerk node but is coming from the Internet side.
Speaker B: So there's a frequency and a PL tone. Do you have those set properly?
Speaker A: Well, I'm here. Here again. He supposedly pre programmed them for me and you know, I've checked my radio and stuff as well. Okay. But I'm not getting anything. So my question to you is how do I check that? I, I, I, somebody told me to go to radio and I forgot how I managed to get there. But I don't know the app well enough to manipulate it.
Speaker B: Well, I can't look right now because I'm driving. But there's the communication between the clear node and your ht, so there's a frequency and a PL tone so they have to match up.
Speaker A: And then if you go to like add content
Speaker B: also, which could be if it's, if it connects, it'll be on, it'll open that up for you automatically. And then if you want to connect to a repeater, all you do is bring that information over and then go and click on it. When it shows you the list, you click on the repeater you want and it should populate and connect. So I'm not sure exactly what it is that is not working for you, but it's for me. I check those things and if they match up, then usually it works.
Speaker A: Yeah, you know, conceptually I understand what you're saying. Your, your statements are consistent with what other people are telling me as well. Unfortunately, nobody knows that particular unit good enough to, to actually help me, you know, and basically steer me, you know, tell me, hit this, hit that, you know, kind of thing to try to troubleshoot this does any. Well, okay, you're driving, so you're not going to be able to do much right now for me. I do appreciate your suggestions though.
