Just want to say hello to everybody on the Net, to John and to Paul and Nana. And then I was up in Brownsville yesterday at a memorial celebration of life for a friend of mine who passed away. So I got to see that community center up there in Brownsville. It's pretty nice. It's a nice place to go, even though considering the circumstances, it's a pretty good event that we had. Just remembering my friend that passed away. He lived in Missouri, and then he moved to Arkansas. I knew him for about 30 years here in New York City before he moved. Well, maybe about 20 years here, at least 25 years. And then he moved, I think less than 10 years ago. But he and his wife moved to Missouri. But then he and.

Up passing away this past month. So yeah, Steve Mankins, he was a really, really nice guy. Really, really loved him and his family, they were very, very kind, very kind people to us and I knew him ever since we moved up here to Yuba City. So anyhow, rest of the week I was working on doing a lot of FT8 stuff. I've been surprised about how great that's worked out. As a mode I'm going to drop the repeater. Hold on. Yeah, as a mode it's kind of sterile in the sense you don't get to really talk to people, but you do get some interaction with the software and it can show you like where the stations are at in the world if you use this thing called Grid Tracker and the WS JTX program along with Grid Tracker. It's kind of interesting because you can see all their call signs pop up, who's talking to who.

And you can actually see, like, a graph of the conversations that are going on worldwide. So it's really fascinating in that sense. And it's a fairly easy way to make a lot of contact. I'm in Grass Valley tonight and wasn't sure how my signal would be, but I'm hearing you guys well. Well, this week I guess one thing I've been working on that had fun with watched a YouTube video by John Portoon on just kind of a simple yaggy that you can make pretty low cost and I enjoyed watching that. So I went ahead and bought a few parts and just about complete with a four element yagi that I'm looking forward to trying out. So go ahead and look that up if you're interested in fun project that's not too tough to accomplish. That's about it. I'll give it Back to you. W6PN.

Very good, Paul. Yeah, that's. That's one thing that I gotta, I gotta get better at is motivating myself to build antennas. I don't have very many places to be able to put them up and leave them up, so anything that I do would be like a field day type situation at home. So. But definitely that sounds like a decent yagi. How many bands you said it's a four band yagi? Well, it's a four element yagi and it's really just a two meter and so it's pretty small, you know, it's I think, the longest. The reflector on that is about 39 inches long and gets shorter from there and the whole thing is only about 2 1/2ft long, so fairly easy to store and.

Be good for fox hunting or, you know, if you're at some distance from another station or the repeater. I've kind of got in mind that I can mount this one on a pole and put it up high and maybe reach the repeater from some distance. So yeah, just pretty simple project, nothing that's going to need a tower W E6 as copy that. Copy that. 2 meters. Yeah, I'd say that that come in pretty decent for some good Simplex work too, maybe on Calcuso day or something like that for some 2 meter contacts, but right on. Yeah, I was thinking maybe it was a bigger yagi for maybe some HF work or something like that, but any yagi is a good yagi in my book, because directional antenna.

Team definitely, in my opinion, are a must. Well, especially for fox hunting and, and, you know, trying to get out one direction as far as you can. Definitely. That's the way to go for sure. And definitely a fun project to build on, I guess. Dipoles and HF antennas are one thing, but building a yagi is a, even though it's a small project, that's, that's a different, different build for sure, but right on. Well, thanks for that, Paul. I don't have a ton from my side this week either. Just was watching the weather cool down quite a bit over the last few days. And one other tidbit of news for our Repeater Move project. We've been graciously being hosted on WD6AXM for such a long time, I figured people would be curious to know if we're making any progress on that project. And well, this week I took the initiative and went down and bought the hardware that we're going to need for the next step of the installation. I don't know why, for some reason I was under the impression the next step was going to be pouring the concrete, but technically we needed another step or two prior to that. So I went down, got some unistrut and some grounding rods and.

And of course, we need to do that before we can get the tower section in the hole and pour the concrete. So we'll be trying to get some, some help to get that done as soon as possible. Obviously, with the holidays coming up, it might be more difficult than not to get a group together, but we'll be trying as soon as we can to get people up there and get that next step going. Take a break and drop the repeater here real quick. And I guess that's all. That's the update for the repeater move project. Hopefully, hopefully we get the next steps going asap. Ko6jit. Hey, Ken. Yeah, go ahead, take it. I made a yagi out of some arrowheads or arrow shafts. I had some old aluminum arrow shafts work pretty well. And I was just goop. Excuse me. I was just gooping around with it, and I made a simplex contact at 80 miles. And I was like, how is this even possible? The guy laughed. He said, well, I'm at 6,000ft in my plane, so that was kind of fun. I'll copy that. Copy that. Yeah. I guess trying to make contacts from a plane might be a little easier than being just on the horizon. For sure, you know, I mean, two meters, just with, you know, verticals, it can go pretty far, you know, I mean, I'm sure people can make a contact on perfect condition.

At least 100 miles or two. Maybe at least. I mean, I would think maybe even further than that if conditions are perfect. Well, using the repeater of the bullet ship repeater, I have my farthest contact. This was up in Weaverville. Roger that. Yeah, that's pretty. That's pretty good waves. They got some elevation up that way for Weaverville for sure. So that probably. Probably came into play, I would think. Right on. Ken, did you have any. Anything else for the net? No, John, I'll. Yeah, 6M. Yeah, go ahead Paul or Tom. Yeah, I had a question for Paul whether he was. Is it going to be like a handheld? Yeah. Are you going to kind of mount it semi permanently or how's that going to work? What do you plan on doing with it? Yeah, this is Paul W6B and H and it's definitely going to be hand holdable because I would like to try it out at least some fox hunting. But I bought a little U bolt to put through it and I also have in mind that when I'm setting up somewhere I could put it on a painter's pole with the U bolt and then run it up, you know, 24ft or so and also rotate it. I've got a mount on the back of my sprinter van that would be perfect for something like that. So you know, when I'm out in the field some.

I could get it up in the air a little bit and rotate it, but not travel with it that way, of course. So it'll be more of a portable mind than anywhere permanent. Yeah, that's really cool. I saw. I talked to a guy some time ago who was on Mount Diablo, and he was doing stuff like that, doing Simplex on 5, 146, 520, and working all kinds of places, like maybe even down to Bakersfield and then all the way up here. So, yeah, if you're up high enough, you could probably go a long, long ways with that thing. Yeah, I think I've talked to the same guy, and that kind of inspired me a little bit. So it'll be fun to try it. Like I said, I'm almost finished with it, but quite have the cable attached and the driven element tied down just yet.

But it's made with driveway snow markers, you know, fiberglass rods wrapped in aluminum tape. And anyway, if you look up John Portun, you'll see a video about it. And I used a different plan for the dimensions, but his build structure, so it was pretty easy to put together. And looking forward to getting it working. I'll let you know how it goes. That sounds like the guy. I did not pick him up from my shack here, but I was down in the city, Marysville, one of the places down there, and I got him. So possibly KO6 the it clear. Yeah, that's definitely the guy. Ko6mo Some good info for sure. Interesting to make contacts as far as you can, especially on two meters and stuff. Right on, right on. Go ahead and take it. Okay. Yeah. I was watching this video and the guys in Massachusetts were doing a lot, evidently do do a lot of stuff on. On 50 meters, which to me is kind of like a band I've never even listened to or, you know, done anything with. But I guess for them it kind of makes sense because they can go almost they're like half or half their state with on 50 meters. But do we have like 50 meter repeaters around here? Does anybody do anything with it? W E6A X N repeater, K6hfp. I'm not sure we can open it up if anybody might know. One place I would suggest recommended check is the NARCC website. And I would think we'd be able to find out specifically if there are any.

Our area. That that website's great because you can search for. I believe it's just for Northern California or for California might be just Northern California, but that's all that I've searched on it. It might be nation, national database, but definitely this area is listed in that database. So we could probably find information on, on 50 meters on that site. Does anybody have any info on that off the cuff? Ko6git. I just looked up in Repeaterbrook and there's nothing, at least in the local counties that I've seen on 50. Well, I had another question for John. I just was curious where you're, where you're putting that that two meter repeater in Oroville where that's going. The w.

6 AF repeater was. Was located in Kelly Ridge, and it's being moved about maybe a mile, mile and a half south of Kelly Ridge off a Chinese wall road. And it should be about 1450 as far as elevation. Oh, yeah, we should be able to hit that, I would think, from here. Yeah, definitely. You would have been able to hit the old location for sure from Yuba. The new location is actually gonna propagate much better south and a little bit better north than the old location. So it's not gonna be quite as good as the repeater we're on right now, because that WD6AXM is in prime location for this area, but it might be, you know, a close second or third best for location as far as that goes.

To go down towards the south and to the north. Of course, our area has Table Mountain in the way going north, but you know, that's kind of that radio shadow, that RF shadow kind of is just isolated to to Chico and just right around Chico. So it gets a little bit north past there. But that Table Mountain gets in the way going north for us on this side of the valley, but it should go south really well, yeah, thanks a lot for the info. Yeah, the only other one I was really familiar with from days gone by was the Cohasset one at Pacheco. So anyway, Ko6mo, I'll send it back to you. John Ko6mo in the net, K6HFP. Thanks, Tom. I think if you're talking about 50 megahertz was the frequency range, then that's the six meter band. And there are several six meter repeaters around, it looks like. So you might check that out if that's what you were thinking of. But I just did a quick search in California and they seem to be scattered around pretty well.

Yeah, I'm laughing right now because I think I said 50 meters and people are probably, probably half of Northern California is laughing at me. But yeah, 50 MHz 6 meters, that's what I was thinking of. Yeah, these guys were in Massachusetts were making like loop antennas, you know, for that and they could communicate, I don't know, 80, 80 miles or whatever to some repeater that they were getting to. But I don't know, maybe their topography is a lot flatter and they don't have a need for they probably have a lot of 2 meter repeaters there too. But it was just curious because I don't know, I've never known anybody that's really worked 50 megahertz 6 meters that much. But it seems kind of like an interesting thing because a lot of these HF rigs have it built in nowadays. So anyway, thanks for checking on that and thanks for correcting me laughing because it's still pretty funny.

Hey Ryan, good morning. Seven o' clock Southern tmd. How are you? Hey, good morning there. I'll doing all right. Just driving to work. How are you doing? Same old same old. Driving to work. A little bit of a late start. Usually isn't there by now but didn't sleep very well. Got up a little bit late. But you got a long weekend. You got Friday after Thanksgiving off or not? Yeah, fortunately I do. I know a couple people in the office are going to be in and out all week. Probably just do half days or something this week got a pretty lenient schedule but mostly got stuff to do in Vegas so at least it's going to be an extended day for me. Oh cool. Yeah we swap Veterans Day for the day after day Thanksgiving so we work vacation we got the Friday after obviously that'll be a three day work week for me.

But unfortunately it's not gonna be half days. A lot of stuff going on but at least it'll be a four day weekend. Yeah it's been a rough couple weeks ever since they open the government back up to get all your guys back. Yeah I had put the last number talking to my HR lady Friday I think we had people leave so I think we lost 13. Yeah I think 13 people we lost out of 650 or something but yeah I think there was five or five here in Las Vegas and the rest of them were in Colorado Springs I left. So I don't know we'll see. I don't think it's going to be the full, the full impact till probably January so I'm sure a lot of people out interviewing you do things like that. So we'll see how it fleshes up. Hopefully they don't. Hopefully they don't do it again the end of January.

Yeah, I hope not. It has not been fun, especially on our side. I'm a reservist so we don't just get handed money. We actually have to manage all of our units budgets and everything when it comes to hiring people and getting them on order. Not fun during a government shutdown. So kind of starting to hedge a lot of our stuff so it doesn't happen after the 30th. Yeah, they, they funded me through January 30th but I've got, you know, based on vacancies and telling you how many people take time off over the holidays I think I'm gonna have enough money through the first week of February in case to do something stupid again. But we'll see anyway. Hopefully that won't happen. Other than that, I was out of town last week for a few days and came back to all the snow on the mountaintops. I was trying to, I was hoping to get to Mount Potosi to put.

The 146.88 repeater back in because I got it. I got it on my bench at home. I got the PA fixed. It's all ready to go, but can't really get to the mountain right now. Probably a little over a foot of snow. Almost 2ft of snow up there. So unless there's some kind of a break, we get a little bit of warmth and sun or maybe a little bit of rain up there, I think I'm gonna be locked out for a while. I don't think they're expecting this much snow, granted. I mean, pretty much every day for about five days, especially over here in Forum, my horse stalls got flooded, so I've been dealing with that. Oh, geez. I bet I saw something I don't on the TV or on the on a news feed about some car getting. It was in Forum. There was some, some car that got completely.

Flooded out and there was a lady or the guy, whatever, was rescued by the fire department. Am I remembering that right? Oh, I saw that. That was somebody misjudged a driveway in concern for the local VA clinic they have out here. Instead of being on the road, they ended up going into a ditch, and the ditch was just full of water, basically level with the driveway. So nobody was hurt, but could have been worse. Okay. All right. Yeah. Doesn't take much in the desert, does it? But anyways, hopefully I'm hoping for a wet winter. Although, you know, I saw something that's severe, predicting a dry winter. But, yeah, you know, it's, there's been, there's been times where I remember one Thanksgiving that we had, we had, we had our UHF radio up on high potency go down, and myself.

One of the guys from the club actually went up there on Thanksgiving morning. Free Peter effect. But yeah, I remember. That was. That was interesting. Thanksgiving. When I got home, the wife was not happy. I imagine it's not a good day for you. Yeah. Anyways. All right, well, I'm. I'm just pulling in my spot here, so I wouldn't say good morning. Well, it was 41 degrees, 39 on my temperature right now. It's a little bit on the chilly side. I've got the whole week ahead of you. What's it like down there? I must have got all your fog down here. Medium thick, I'd have to say, and chilly, of course, but okay. And I only have three days of this week to worry about being as hell. I've got Thanksgiving and Friday off.

Yeah. You've got all seven days to worry about. But they're not all going to be work related, I guess. True. That's true. Yeah. Yeah. Thanksgiving is going to be interesting. My my son and daughter in law, actually, we had Thanksgiving with them and my grandson yesterday because they're going down to Jesse's parents for Thanksgiving Day. And so it's just going to be us and my daughter on Thanksgiving. So I'm not sure that we're going to be cooking a turkey. Maybe a turkey breast. Yeah. Our Thanksgiving is a little different this year, too. We often either, you know, we usually travel somewhere to be with the family, but this year we have quite a bit of family coming in, coming here. So we'll have of a couple.

Crowd together here and so I won't have to travel this time. Well, lucky you. Have you got room for them all? There's the question. Yeah, that's definitely a question. I'm sure we'll make room. There's always room for one more, isn't it? Well, I guess if they don't mind, you know, sleeping on the couch and the floor and stuff like that. Yeah. Since my kids have left home, we have filled up their rooms with other things, so really there's. There's not much room to put anybody else up. Okay. Well, I know that happened. Yeah. I think we'll be able to accommodate everyone. And being that's all the way out in California, not everybody is coming, so the crowd isn't as big as it could be.

And that's always nice. You don't get to do that often enough. And I think you and I have talked about this before. Happen. But I thought maybe the first thing that I would do after I retired, maybe a month or so, give a time for winter to really be gone, is to go back to Illinois to visit my family. Yeah, I'd say that'd be an ideal thing. Dude, that'd be good. Usually we use the excuse. Well, you know, we. You can't take time off, or we don't take time off. But once you're retired, why, have at it. Yes. Yes. Yeah, it's kind of. Kind of weird. I actually, at the request of my manager, officially put my paperwork in telling them that my retirement date would be March 31st.

Well, you know, plans are made to be changed, but some things like that are. It's always good to have a date nailed down and have it in the books and you know what's going to happen. Yeah. The fun thing about this is I told them, okay, that's going to be my last day at work. And according to CalPERS, your last day of work is not your first. First retirement day, it's the next day. So my retirement day will actually be April 1st. W. And that's April Fool's Day. Hope it's not a cruel joke. Sir. Yes, sir. So. Yeah. So are you going to be coming down for the Christmas party? I'm not going to be able to attend this year.

I. I'm gonna have to get that date. I mean, I. There's a possibility. As long as it's not interfering with anything else. As far as I know, it's a possibility. You might have that date handy there. Did they make that decision already? They did. They did. It's December 2nd, and, you know, this year they're not going back to the Chinese restaurant. Do some sort of a lengthy transmission just to see if it cuts in and out. Your transmission just now worked just fine. Roger that. Yeah, what I found was when I took it down, the main drive element was loose in the bushing. And the connector was maybe a little loose. I had to take it down and tighten everything up and straighten out the reflectors and then put it back in service. And so all this seems to be okay at this point.

Copy that. Had solid copy on your transmission. So I guess you've got hooked up to a yagi somewhere there on the property. No, it's the original antenna that I had set up there at the corner of the solar system, which you have seen several times. Okay. You talked about a reflector. That's why I was. That's where I was coming from, thinking it was a yagi. Because with vertical. How do you have a reflector on the vertical? Well, my terminology may have not been correct, but it is a. It's a J pole, a double J pole. So for UHF and vhf, it's a homebrew. Okay, copy that. That makes sense. I know.

What you're, what you're saying then. Yeah, it's. Yeah. Okay, Good enough. Well, anyhow, that seems to have done the trick, so thank you very much. You're quite welcome. You know, I'm working on putting up the off center fed dipole now for the drt. And I'm going to try and set up a, and finish rebuilding one of my multi band five band verticals for the DRT for the exercise. Oh, fantastic. That's great. Yeah. What are you using for end supports on the dipole? I'm just using some of my military mast sections on each end. One end, but the pipe.

The containers and the other end is out in the field to kind of the northeast. And then the center point will be hoisted up by the mast, that manual mast that's there on one of the communication shelters. Copy that. So it'll be sort of like a dogleg configuration. Say again? It will be like a dog leg configuration as a full, as opposed to straight wire. Yes. Off center fed dipole. So it's fed about a third from one end. Yeah. Let me try to describe better what I was trying to say.

So is it going from point A to point B, or is there a point A, point B, point C? The latter. So the. The B point is two thirds or one third from, depending on how you look at it. From one of the ends. So it's a dipole. Yeah, I understood that part. It was just getting a visual, a visualization in my brain, whether it was just one long wire from point A to point B, or if it had a bend in it, meaning that you would have a B, a B spot in the running of the wire. And ultimately the question is, what kind of a. What's the word? Now? The words are out of my head. What orientation will it have as far.

As stations to transmit, receive, that sort of thing. Well, that's the interesting part. It should go basically north and south, but something should come off the end that's facing east, the longest end. It's a dipole. So it's all the characteristics of a dipole. It's not exactly a straight line. It'll have a. In the middle point will be kicked out into a very shallow V, a horizontal V that is facing the center point will be facing basically south. When you come over here, I'll walk it out. If you have time. Yeah, probably not today, but I've got the mental picture of what you're talking about. And of course, the main concern as far as the orientation.

Would be how? Well, east coast stations would be able to get the signal. That I can't guarantee if they will get it, but we'll figure out something. That's why I'm going trying to get a vertical up and see what we can do with that. See if we can get, get the 5 degree point off the horizon. But yeah, we'll do our best and we'll do some testing before the exercise. Yeah, copy that. And obviously it's also a function of BEP as well as whatever is going on in the atmosphere at any given time. Well, start feeding those electrons, bulk them up, I'll put them on a training point.
