Well, if you're just heading home, this is kk7ddi. Yeah. Hey, Ken. Sure am. So, heading home for the day? It's kind of a. Actually pretty busy for a Monday. What you up to? I'm just playing around the man cave right now. I had a cousin that gave me a bunch of stuff. I'm just separating and cleaning stuff. He pulled out a bullet out of some that he didn't. He didn't care for him, so he tears them apart. Oh, okay. You just put that in your parts bin for. For making the bullets. It.
Yeah, I'll take them up. I'll mold them up and take them up, shoot them. I was up there today and we shot a few. Go up and just play around. Something to do the house for a little while. Okay, cool. So what's. What's your plans for Thanksgiving? We. My daughter and nurses are coming down, and I think my son's going to be up here with his kids. We're just going to tear up the turkey right here in the house. Ah, good deal. Good deal. So. Sounds nice. Make a day out of it. I don't really have any plans. We're gonna go out to dinner, take my mom out to dinner for bed. Bed.
Evening, like at 5:00', clock, I think, or something like that, or whatever Tom is. I think it's five o' clock and that'll be about it. That's good. If you take your moment soon after accident. Well, she's healed, but I just, you know, just getting old. She's 86, I think, now, my dad. So she's. She's got. She's got a lot of medical issues, but it is what it is, 86. This is Spring chicken to me. I'm kind of trying to catch her, I guess. I'm 78 and I got other than two here. Yeah, she's got heart problems. The valve not closing right or something.
Causes problems with blood, you know, getting blood to where it needs to go. And it's basically a. A procedure that's just. It's too invasive at her age to actually do it. So they're just trying to manage it with medicine. That's the only thing I got that works good is my heart, they say. I've been on to a heart doctor. Everything looked good, and it was working all. All right. Nothing else. That's good news. Did you get out? You get out in a walk and stuff Every. Every day or every other day or something like that, Moving or what you do? Well, I'm still pretty active. I got an old H out back that I have to go out and feed and take care of and. And dog is nice. Get out.
I still get out and get wood and stuff like that. It just takes me so much longer than I used to. And I pack oxygen. I got a backpack with oxygen on it. So I go out and still run my chainsaw and get wood. As long as I got that, I guess I got to keep that doing that as well. I hope I can keep doing it. I'm pretty good at it. All the links drop out, so nothing timed out. All right. Well, good, good, good, good. Any do any more playing around on 10 meters or not? I was thinking around a little bit. I think it was Saturday or Sunday. Ten meters was pretty active.
Yeah. That got me into the radio. Talking on the sand Radio company Get my license and stuff. She found out I had that radio, and she pestered and pestered and tested. And she wants me to send it to Florida to her. When she was a kid, I guess her family had gravy was like that. She wanted a real bad. So I told her, I said, okay, I'll box it up, send it to you. Ah, she's giving up on hf Whatever. I mean, if she. She's going to get more use out of it. That's nice. That's nice of you to do that. The machine was when she was in the airport. She communication. So if you.
Her childhood. They were all into the heavy stuff. When she found out I had it almost done about. Yeah, I was in the CD heavy when I was a kid too. Matter of fact, when I was in the Air Force, that was my career field was it was ground radio, which is like, you know, vhf, UHF type of radio, air ground radios and air to air radios. But that was the training I got. And when I got my first duty assignment, they said, congratulations, you're going to work in the microwave shop. I ended up working in microwave telemetry boxes and things like that. For the time I was in, She was all in the airport.
Well, she met her husband in there in the Air Force. When they got married she went the qu all over. That's what she was in was communication. Yeah, it was fun and fun usually the communicate the ground radio, live deployment, you know, overseas, stuff like that. But I ended up working in a different program with that was all state size and special access type stuff. I got pretty lucky and I The entire time I was in I was. We worked directly with. Back then it was and IBM we were directly with their field engineers and one of the IBM really toys.
Please. Id. Thank you.
Guy, RF engineer. Kind of took me under his wing. Took a shin in me, I guess, and taught me a lot. So I learned a lot while I was in. But that was good. He was in. Surveying, you said? Like GPS survey? I think so. I think that's what he was doing. I'm not positive, but I thought that's what he was doing, surveying. And before that he was in. I showed pictures, radiation pictures of X rays, X ray?
Pictures of wells and different strengths. That sounds kind of cool. Unique field to be in and definitely something you can take the civilian world and get a regular civilian job with too. That's cool. He's too old to do anything anymore. I talk to him every now and then. He's up there probably as old as your mother. He still kicking. And I talk to him every now. And a lot of them guys I work with either. I'm the ones that are still alive. Most of them are all ready. Know. It's hard to stay in touch with the guys that died, right?
I hope I don't see any of this. If they do come around, I'll tell you about it, all right? I should call the television station. Pretty funny to talk about them old boys. Boy, some of them are just real nice guys. They're just some of the best people you ever work with, you know, Just great guys. Most of them are all gone, but I. I welded quite a bit out there. And that group of guys.
The majority of them guys are all gone. Yeah, I worked with a bunch of really good guys when I was in the Air Force. But, you know, it's one of the Lose touch. It's one of those things where you move to a different duty. Yeah, we'll stay in touch. We'll stay in touch. You never do. I don't know how you can get into nature, I guess, but anyways. All right, well, I am wearing these. I'm out of here. Things good to chat. Have a good rest of your evening.

W e6a x n repeater. Hello everyone, this is K0X Justin in Calusa and it looks like electricity is totally out, and I'm wondering if anybody has an idea maybe how long it's out. It went out really weird. It didn't just go out at real fast, it went out real slow. Like somebody took about 30 seconds to turn a dimmer down. Anyways, I'm into your comments if you've got any useful information. This is Hans. It's Indigo Julia Delta in Sutter. I am not familiar with that at all. This happens. Well, as I said just now, well, no.
I have. You know, I'm kind of a news guy, so I haven't seen anything pop up on my phone or anything like that, but it just sort of kind of went out in a weird way. Yeah, I've never seen it do this before. Not that I've seen everything. I haven't, and I don't mind admitting that. The thing is, though, electricity usually goes out pretty quick. This was almost as though someone just turned a giant dimmer down on everything. It was weird. Almost like a brownout. Oh, I think there's another station coming in. Hey, it wasn't me. But now it's Kilo, Oscar Six, Bravo, Golf Yankee. It sounds like power's out quite all over the place. I just woke up from a nap and the power's out. Wait, I didn't hear your call sign, but you said nap. Okay, Paul. Right.
Ko0x, this is KO6BTY affirmative. It's Paul. Well, good morning. Or you probably worked all day already, so. Okay, it's out on your side too. Trip. Trippy. Okay, well, you know, it's no big deal. We've all lived through these, but sometimes people come on the radio and go, yeah, a car hit a pole out there on such and such road. And you know, I was just wondering if anybody knew about that because everyone's got scanners. KB9 MYF. Come on. I'm here in Orland and Parazon here again. Again, I think he was saying the power is on in orland. Ko6bg.
Way power is on here in Orland. KB9MYS. Oh, that's still good information. I just hope that it going out full like this doesn't wreck anything, you know, But I guess that's better than it going up real high. But in the meantime, I got work that needs to continue. Like busting out a few more batteries and some other lanterns. Hey, Justin, Sorry to interrupt your Q so there. I'll go ahead and let you get back to what you're doing in 73 to all stations. KO6TGY. I'll be listening in the background. Oh, hey, Paul, Go ahead and interrupt all you want. That's what we've got radios for. And I really wasn't into acute, so I was just trying to figure out if there was any what may have caused this. Oh, well, no big deal.
Thanks, everybody. Appreciate it. Appreciate all the info. It's all good info. Okay, well, first time on the radio for a month. Thank you. Okay, then. Ko0x, sort of standing by and monitoring.

Kilo. November 6th. Mike golf kilo. Hey, good evening. Good evening to you. You're making the system and you're sounding okay tonight. And I heard you the last time, too, but I was in the other room. So how are you doing this? Fine, even. Yeah, I didn't copy that whole lot. Let me turn this off here. Yeah. Yeah. I'm sitting here listening to this 80 meters AM sign. You're listening to 80 meters am you listening to shortwave? Yeah, it's. They're having a net. I can't get up there at 37. 900, I believe it is.
You can't get there. Why? Is it below. Below your. Your area or something? I didn't hear where he said. No, no, I made a mistake here. It's 3870 they're having. Well, they just got done with their net on. They were using the a.m. actually, it sounded pretty good. Okay, so they were using a.m. okay. Yeah. Nice. Anyway. But you said you couldn't get there anyway. I don't. I mean, I figured that's probably because you don't have an antenna, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't have an antenna, but I hear them. And, yeah, I'm afraid of hurting the radio, so I don't even try to transmit. I would just sit there and listen. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Makes sense. Yeah. And so you have an intent.
For that particular band, at least one that you can use from probably the comfort of your qth. Anyway. Yeah, one of my friends down here, he has a Comet 150B. That's a 150 Bravo. It's a vertical antenna. It doesn't require a radial field and he has that up and he uses it all the time and it does 80 meters. It's just a vertical antenna. He got it from the gears auction pretty cheap, like 150 bucks or something like that. And just put it up and he has it like on a. He has it like on a fence post. It's not very high. It's probably like, I don't know, six feet off the ground. That's all it is. And like I said, no radials or nothing like that. It's just a vertical, pretty easy to put up, but it works. It's not the perfect antenna, but it works.
Yeah, yeah, I understand that. Yeah, I heard that was a pretty good deal. And is that antenna about 17 foot tall by itself? Well, here, I'll look it up real quick. Pretty sure that's the what it is because I have actually two friends that have one, but I think both of them got them from the Gears auction in two separate years. Let's see Comet. That's not it. Let's see Comet. I'll just type in Comet. HF Antenna maybe see if that works. Yeah, they if it's.
What I'm thinking of is it's brand new. It's something like three or four hundred dollars. It's pretty expensive. Pretty expensive antenna, but I guess it's a good. Yeah, I think I'm off a little bit. I think it's this comet cha250hd. I think that might be right. It looks like that one. So let's see how tall that one is. Yeah. See, it says it'll do. It'll do 80 meters to 6 meters. So that's what it'll do. Okay. And it is. No, it's 23.4ft.
Yeah, Yeah, I knew it was getting up there, but yeah, those antennas run, you know, like three, four. So that was a pretty good deal down there. Well, here showing a little over 400 on the comet site, but you can find them used all the time. So they're kind of a compromised antenna. Probably not the best thing, but they work. And they're good for people even like yourself, who might want to have it up for a time. And then since they're only, you know, a few feet off the ground, you can take it right down anyway and put it away for maybe for the winter or something. I don't know. But yeah, you can find them on QTH.com and QRZ.com on their you section from time to time, too. Yeah, yeah, he was there. Yeah. So anyway, what have you been up to, dude?
The parks on there. Yeah, I did go over there today and got my 10 contacts pretty quick. I did try some QRP first, but that didn't work. So switched over to 50 watts and then I got my 10. It was tough enough on 50. 50 watts, that is using the 20 meter band. All right, cool. Yeah, well, we did most of the day. We played all, I guess you call it. What it is, is Monopoly game. But it's basically the Grand Canyon. With my grandson and my wife, we played Monopoly for like, I don't know, like three hours. I had to bankrupt them both when they let me go.
Yep. Anyway, so that's kind of what I did on that today. I'm just still cut pruning and stuff around the house. I loaded some more of the prunings into my trailer and stuff like that. Haul those up to paradise. Got a burn pile up there. And. Yeah, that's about it. I've got plenty to do, but there's a net in about 10 more minutes here on the 105 repeater, so I'll probably listen in to that. Yeah. Supposed to be decent weather through Thanksgiving. Are you headed back to Red Bluff for that day? No, actually, we're probably going to stay up here. And that was the watch they have. Yeah. You.
We got reservations down there and pretty much the whole town shows up there. Of course, you only have, you know, like from 11 to 11 to 2, that kind of thing like that. And my father goes restaurants, my wife's parents, that kind of thing. But yeah, that's about all we're doing. We have my grandson until Wednesday, and then we take him back home when his mom gets off work and you know, that kind of thing like that just kicking around. But the weather, I hear that we may get a chance of rain maybe one day next week, and then it's going to be clear all the way to last of December. But that's a long ways out, the forecast, if you get what I'm saying. Yeah, a lot of things can change for sure. I'm enjoying it because I'm able to get a few things done.
I don't got to be stuck inside or whatever, so that's always nice. Still just planting some things, that type of thing. Moving leaves around, you know, that time of year for moving leaves around. So. Trying to develop my compost piles up in Paradise. I've got three of those going right now. Gotta keep adding to them as the leaves go down. That's part of what these leaves are I just picked up here from Chico. And I'll bring them up there and then. Yeah, we'll see. I might have to bring my trailer down one more time to get some more leaves, and then that'll do it. Not enough leaves in Paradise. Not that I. You know, that. I want. I want some good leaves. Yeah, well. Yeah, most of the trees up here, paradise, are gone, I believe, ain't they? You know, like, Sid, they're up there and they're pretty bare.
You know, they're probably still alive, but they take them off of them and come back. But you know what we do is we break up the pine needles and then next week they're all back. Yeah, I'm not sure what to do about that. They fall down up there in paradise, too. I still have pine trees around, so they get all over the place. I actually don't mind them in certain areas, but I clear them off in other areas, so I get your point there. Yeah. So did you go on H F radio at all today? Because the conditions were kind of interesting. No, I didn't. Yesterday I was on it for a little while, but for most of the day, like I said, we were playing games. I have bought.
A slingshot to, you know, tie a weight on the end of it, put a fishing line on it, and I can shoot it up in the tree. Okay. That was my intention, to build me one. But then I went over to Ham Fest over at Bedtronic, and the guy had one all fixed up there for five bucks with the reel and everything. So I bought it. And my grandson got the. Got the other one. So I bought him some, I guess you call them little marble looking things and a target. So we've been out doing that kind of number and playing with him, you know, letting him shoot his slingshot. So that's cool. Well, you ought to get him to shoot the line up in the tree like you want, and then grab some rope and pull it back the other way so you're ready.
Yeah. Well, I'll tell you, Steve, you know, I had that 20 meter. I was out there playing with this slingshot, has like a. I would say maybe a five ounce weight on it. I was playing with this sling. I shot that dude up there, and I didn't have enough coax. That sucker went over the limb, and I'm talking maybe 100 foot up there and came back down. I thought, that's too tall. And so I had to pull it back over. And then I just shot it about 50 foot or so and ran a rope up there and tied the antenna on it, yanked it up and did an inverted beam about 50 foot. Yeah, that's a good spot. 50 foot's a good. A good height for a lot of things. So.
Yep. Can run a nice fan dipole off that or something for sure. So. Sounds good. Yep. But yeah, you'll have to get yourself an extra length of coax, that's all. Yeah, well, I got a 50 foot LM400. That's what this radio is hooked to. I won't mess with that. But then I got another 25 foot run and a. I think the other one's like a 20 foot run. But then I have a hundred foot over here that I hadn't got. Got an input on it. And I'm not sure what that is. I'm not sure if it's an LM400 or. But it's flex, it's real soft. And I bought it. I bought the whole thing down. There's a Lincoln for $5. Yeah, well, if it checks out good.
Use it now. I use some old stuff up in paradise for hs. The loss isn't something you got to worry about too much. So, yeah, there's probably a RG213 or something like that pretty close to it. Maybe. So. Yeah, use that. Yeah, for hf. It'll work fine, I'm sure. Yeah. Yeah. That's why I keep this LM400 on this 2 meter. But yeah, you know, like I said, I'll put an end on it and get it up there. I got about 150 foot tree pine, what they call a pea pine, sitting out here. And I would say at least 150 foot if I get it up the top that I kept telling my wife I'm gonna pay a climber to go up that tree and put me a pulley up there and then put a rope on the pulley and then.
What I wanted to send it up by setting it up be kind of infl. That kind of thing. Probably cost a couple hundred bucks to get something climbing. Yeah. Might make him pretty happy right now near Christmas time and buy his family something for Christmas. Who knows? Anyway. Yeah, sounds like fun. All right, well I'm gonna let you go for tonight. I'm gonna hop on over to the 105. I think is where the. Where the net is tonight. Yeah, I think so. If not then it's on the AS608 repeater one of those two. Anyway, I'm gonna hop on over there. The net starts in about two minutes and I'm at least listen and that's for the the guard's group to one out of our toy. So hopefully I hear you in the morning and definitely before Thanksgiving would be nice and if you're sticking around maybe I'll hear you Thanksgiving.

Hearing? None. Let's go up to Bob and Elk Creek on the talk back and find out what's going on up there. KC6UIs. Yeah, KC6UIs. Well, I think I mentioned last week that my generator failed. And I've been working on it. And I got. Friday I got my new battery installed and buttoned her up and everything was back running again, I thought. And during my Sunday night American Legion Net, or Sunday afternoon American Legion Net, we had a power outage and I went, oh, my God, please start. Please start. Because when my station runs on batteries, my amplifier needs 240 volts. So everything was running except for I didn't have my amplifier anymore.
Took about 11 seconds and the generator started up and everything came back online. And I was one happy camper that I got her all fixed. So there's a success story and just another little, little hint that we should all be checking our backup stuff that we don't look at very often. KC6UAS back to net. Yes, thank you, Bob, for that and those reminders. And I'm glad to hear that. In fact, I was listening and ready to check into your net yesterday evening or afternoon. And the power went out here, too, at the qth. It seems like Glenn county got hit kind of all over. I think it was a switching thing that PG was doing because there was no.
Schedule that I know of. And there was no outage information posted by PG&E. So it must have been a wide area. And my generator started too, and of course it crashed my computers and my repeaters and everything else going on here. And I had to actually get those all back online. But it was great that during the net you were able to still hear and maintain control. And when the power came back, everything was fine. In fact, it was an excellent net yesterday, Bob. Thank you. And yeah, I hadn't heard any report on what it was, so thank you for that synopsis on what could happen.
Yeah. On the analysis there, that's just my suspicions. With all the fires we've had, the operations switching operations have changed. And so I think we're going to see more of those kinds of outages in the future. Unless something really changes with the PGD system. Got a mosquito trying to carry me off here anyway. Yeah. So we just have to be prepared for that and handle the issues that come about by a power cycle. In fact, my swimming pool equipment has been taking big hits. And with the power outage and the generator and power coming back, I'm having to go out and reset the date and time on the main pump. Fun business.
Okay. The only other thing I have is, you know, last Monday, Phil was having problems with checking in and my signal breaking up to him when everybody else was hearing me. Okay. And so I took down the antenna on his remote system, his VHF UHF antenna, and found the connector slightly loose. But the main thing was that the main element, it's a J pole, homemade, had come loose in the bracket with the vibration of the wind and everything. And so it was actually shorting out periodically and didn't bother the radio too much. But it got tightened up today and reinstall.
And tested and everything is fine. As you heard tonight, Phil is quite clear and he was hearing the net quite clear. So that's problem solved. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Always meeting, especially antennas and feed lines. We got to check them periodically to make sure that they are intact and working as advertised. Okay, let's go to Phil Ki6 SMN and hear about this exercise that he is putting together. Aquilo, India 6 Sierra, Mike November here. First of all, thank you to KF6RBI for doing that maintenance work. And indeed, things are working well tonight on vhf. And then before I get into the exercise dialogue.
We have been able to get a Thrive in Action team for the December 7 gathering. Which part of that will result in there being a couple of drawings? And the total amount of the items for the drawings is 175. So if you haven't signed up yet for the December 7th gathering, please do so and let it drop and come back. Next item then, specifically about the exercise project. I'm working on the idea of making a little bit more progress now, getting some documentation put together that will describe how the exercises will work. The idea is on a quarterly basis to have a specific scenario that's going on and those stations wishing to participate in the exercise than demonstrating. Not demonstrating, but.
Discovering whether the equipment is working in a helpful way, plus getting some practice in what to do when you've got a real type event going on, they're going to let it drop and come back. And thanks also to kf6rbi hoping to have some antenna capabilities that we will not only involve stations here locally in our area, but through HF as far east and west as the carrier will take the signal given helpful propagation situation. So at any rate, progress is being made and I'll keep you posted as things go along. It probably will not be until after the first of the year where we'll actually do the first exercise with that. Back to that, this is KI6SMN.
Okay, Phil, thank you for that. And we'll be anxiously awaiting the exercise documents and the planning. I've already started working on getting HF antenna set up for you and been also working on the other mini computer for the right hand station. That's the curbside station in the drt and taking my mini computer out of there. So this one will be set up and easy to get into and with no, actually no credentials to log in, like the street side station. Okay. Do we have any other.
D.
Members wishing or those listening on the net that have any things they would like to discuss or bring forward comments or suggestions, please come now. Last call for late members or guests wishing to check in to the Gars money.net please come now. Comment yes, go Comment. Yeah, this is AM6 of a little bit of static. I can't tell whether it's I believe it's on your signal, Mike or Peter, but it's not really.
Real bad, but a little bit of almost like. Okay, Joe, it's funny you were saying that because your signal was pretty. Had a pretty good amount of static with it, too. So I think it is a propagation issue at the repeater. We do have fog that's starting to come in, so. And we've been having fog over the last few nights and we have it again tonight with us. So I don't know what to say at this point. Yeah, this is ian. A6o a, not joe. Yeah, just a comment. Just a comment. Roger that. Thank you. Okay.
One last call for Light members or guests wishing to check in before we close the net. Hearing None. This concludes the GAR's Monday Night NetControl. Would like to thank everyone who checked in tonight as well as Gary for the use of the W6 DRC Red Mountain Repeater. We hope you'll join us next week. This is Mike KF6 Obi Willows returning the W6 TRC repeater to its normal service. 73 to all and very blessed Thanksgiving week. This is Mike KF6 Obi in Willows signing clear.

Hello, world. 86 poc mobile on the katani side. System 26, link up. K6lnk system 36, snow mountain range. C6poc nx50. Hey, adam, how you doing? System two, make up. They doing okay? I was gonna sell you happy news. I got a hold of Ralph and we chatted till the cows came home. I'm gonna be down on Montara on December 3rd at 10am to walk the job with the county of San Mateo. So check it out. What you guys want to do is going to be dust soup. I'll be up there already. Okay, let's see if we can arrange something. Yeah, I just got your letter. It's kind of a little.
Way around get. And it gets me. So I pass it off to Ralph and yeah, let's see if we can do something. It'll be fun. That letter just now got to you. Holy cow. What's going on? Mailman? Any explanation why that took so long? My old qth. So it takes time for her to get stuff to me. So it kind of got delayed. Okay, then. Well, that makes me feel better. Here I'm thinking, why did the mailman take two weeks to bring a letter from Stan Arosa? Now I think you're in daily duty. I was all, oh, okay. Well, I know it seems ready to be the busy time of the year. Hey, riddle me this one. My grandpa told me that when he was growing up as a kid, the male to be.
Twice a day. I said, what? Can you believe that? Is that the way it was when you were a kid? See, I grew up in the 60s, and I can't remember the mailman coming twice. Maybe it's. I remember a movie about it. But mailman came twice for another reason. Well, I was wondering about that. I'm always curious how the mail works. I was reading a book by Steinbeck called East of Eden. And in there is a pretty good chapter about the introduction of the Model T car. And what he explained is that how the Model T changed American life for everybody. Most of America was rural and agricultural prior to the Model T. But when the Model T showed up, people would come into town and.
Every day to check their mail, whereas previously it was just once a week because you'd hitch up the horse and either ride the horse in or take the the wagon back there. I thought that was so interesting. The post office was actually named because there was a hitching post out front for your horse. And prior to the Civil War, everybody came to the post office to get their mail. They didn't have a rural route that kicked it out to you until 1865 or so. It's actually pretty interesting. Poc nx64id well, that's interesting. I actually, if it's in the 1800s that they actually came out to the addresses, I'm surprised. I thought the post would post office would probably be the place to pick up your mail for, you know, at least until like the first half of the 20th century. So I'm surprised. That's pretty good. Yeah. You know, technology changes everything.
The iPhone. You know, the phone changed everything. The Internet changed everything. We're going to go through another set of changes with the AI. So what do they say? As things change or as things stay the same, they always change, or as things change, they always stay the same? Two proverbs in there. Number one is the only constant is change. Number two is the more things change, the more they stay the same. So I was wondering about that myself, thinking about architecture and whatnot. Growing up in Petaluma and Santa Rosa, I don't think houses are going to be different between now and the next hundred years, unless people go to high density nonsense. That's another topic, though. Yeah, I was wondering about that. How the postman had changed this. These. There was a big push to get.
Mail delivery to everybody at the Civil War. And they talk about this here. I was really impressed by that. ScienceK talks about it quite a bit. The First World War really put a lot of changes in American lives, because America was almost a Third World country, and that really recognized the Industrial Revolution. Now we have a big ship, so we need people who can rivet and weld and mold steel, electricians to wire these things up, plumbers to set, you know, water coming and going. It was really a big difference. That was a confluence of a lot of technology coming in. And, you know, I guess the big thing was this country was eager enough to stay up with technology. Well, let's see. I think the United States is a pretty agricultural country until, like, the first, maybe even the Second World War.
And what it was is the Second World War is a big engine that changed a lot of industries. So industries were forced to make adaptations and the economy became more efficient. That's why, you know, that's when America really flourished. Hey, Adam, I'm going to take my wife over to the in laws, so I'm going to be out for a second. So let me take 73s and maybe I'll catch you a little bit later. Okay? Run her over to the in laws. Go see a late night visit. I'll be here. Nx6e from kb6poc in santa rosa. Hey, I'll be back. Nx60.
Nr7g. Lady up in Vegas at this time of night kt6.in Arizona. Was that kilo delta 6 papa. Officer charlie. Yes, las vegas with 24 hour count new year gone november. Romeo 7 golf. To meet is john nr7e from cd50 poc. Yeah, you got my call sign, right, buddy? Only one I've ever had, so. Well, what's going on in vegas? I haven't.
Give Vegas 2 thoughts in a long time. Last time I remember thinking anything about it was when Steven Ceno was up there at the Mandalay Bay. Just shoot at everybody. God, wasn't that awful? Yeah. Yeah. So get chilly down here and take the dogs for a walk back inside. Now I'm gonna start getting ready to retire for the evening. 5:30am Coming soon. What's going on at 5:30am you still going to work this?
Yeah, I got. I work in city government so I'm working Monday from Wednesday, four days. I could take off more time if I want. A lot of people are off, but I actually like being there because. Internal traffic. Just. Let me agree with you right there about that one. I, I do. I work night for the utility company out here. Pacific Gas Electric. I'm a crane specialist. And I'll tell you what, after 5:30 I can really rock and roll. Prior to that I got too many Magoos from a biotomy for 2 crap they're not supposed to have or do or.
Just general inquiries. During the day I design and build communication sites. I have four employees and it's growing pretty good. My biggest customer actually is city government, counties mostly. But as you can imagine, I'm trying to transition here, but I'm not quite ready to take that leap. The first boss I ever had, his name is Josh Biden. He told me he gets way more work done after five o' clock than a whole day beforehand. Yep, that's closer we get to major holidays, the more stuff I get done. So next couple of days I'm ramping up to crank out some unfinished projects that have been back burning for a while, and I'm going to hit them off myself before 5:30pM on Wednesday.
Bad you guys were 12 then, or 10. If you're getting up at 5:30, you must have an early start. I had a meeting today with the county of San Mateo, which is the one where Steve Jobs lived at when he was alive, about going to do a calm communication site walk with both sides people called Montara Ridge. I actually think that there might be a repair of sight of this. One of these nose might be up there. And let me tell you what, if you saw some of the boneheads that come to these meetings, not employees of San Mateo, but the other contractors, I can only imagine the apprehension these nice people actually feel. Yeah. So you work overnight? You work. Are you working now or other the home or what?
Works a swing shift for PDE and that allows me to be self employed during the day. I go to meetings, I write proposals, I take photos of something or I'll physically do the work, climb up the showers, adjust the incentives, take them up, put them down, change the steel, paint something, etc. And then go to work for PD. It takes a lot on your body to work double chips. However, when you're waiting for paychecks like we frequently are from our clients, I can my house payment gets paid and I don't have to worry about everybody might be writing payroll for everybody else. See what I'm saying? That's the biggest drag about being self employed is saving people for money.
Yeah, that's no fun. So you've been doing this line of work for a number of years or something? Sir, as you guess, I've been in the tower business for 24 years. It was my college job. And when I graduated, the two old men I worked for who own communication sites, one of them died, the other dude 85. So I really, I don't think took over the business, but I picked up where they left off, and I still do things for them. And we're all friends. They're coming over for Thanksgiving. But it really morphed from just general purpose antennas on off to power rehabilitation and then structural engineering and then generator service. Pretty soon you're taking bare ground to finish product. I tell you what, brother, I.
I'm wired for this. It's. I'm hooked. I'm. I. It's something I get up every morning. I really enjoy it. I don't consider it a job. Wow, that's super cool. Yeah, I just, I. My wife and I sold a. A little 12 acre parcel we had up in Castle, Wyoming. In fact, a number of years ago, probably since six years ago when I was buying this property, I met with a ham up there who had a. I think it was a five acre parcel on top of Camps for Mountain that had an abandoned AT&T long line site with a big like, I want to say it was like 115 or 200 foot tall power with, you know, kind of spread legs, spread apart legs. They're probably, I don't know, 12ft across from the base or more than that.
And then, you know, freestanding tower. I don't think it died, but I. I remember starting this kind of fuzzy on the. Fuzzy on the details, but it had a block building at the base of it, and he wanted to sell me the whole five acres. I almost bought it. It was the coolest. Coolest tower was to have a recent restaurant. It was cast a year or two prior and had, I don't know, alternating red and white section. It was just really cool. And they had amazing coverage around that area. There were some microwave sites to go off to the Medicine Bow National Forest in different directions, all kinds of microwaves going around different places. But I just didn't want to be living up around all the rf, plus all the snow and everything. I thought that'd be the coolest tower.
You know, repeater, like whatever you want to put up there. I could have had it all. But now, anyway, we decided to retire in northern Nevada for the Spring Creek. We got a 38 acre park on the lake. It's on a little hill. And when I retire, I'm going to put in my own tower. You can help me out. I'll contract this here. I can point the right direction or tell you what you're up against. I know exactly what long line sites are, and frankly, I have to agree with you. A lot of them are really cool. That's 1950s technology. We were wondering about that. There's a Facebook group I follow long lines enthusiasts and I've seen a lot of their stuff built in the early 50s. It really was a roaring before fiber up and down all around the United States.
My brother lives in Wyoming. He actually stay with me for a month and then he went back. He is a post office box in Rawlin. He's looking forward to starting a job with the railroad company out there. They call it up. It's going to be a signal that if it works out. They even told him in the interview, we have a really hard time filling this job. I mean, the wind just roars through you out there, cold as hell. And he says, everybody knows everybody else. And there's not. How do I say it? There was quite a bit of culture shock from growing up in Santa Rosa. Yeah. That's why we decided. We decided not to. We actually did. Okay. When we sold. To develop our.
Property up in ne. Pretty excited about that. We already put a, well, the small customer owned facility called Wells Rural Electric Power. Wells Rural at this company and the other power by hydropower out of, I want to say Oregon and Idaho and northern Utah. So it's way cheaper than the energy and all that, but like 25 to 30% cost of what we pay down. California. I work for the utility company here at night and because of that,
That I get a slight discount on the energy. Now, people think it's 25%. It's really not. It's 10% on gas and 15% on electricity. So people confuse that. But here's the best solution I have. My wife is a nurse and our deal is I, I paid off the house. She pays for the utility bill. So we both win. I don't really worry about it. A pretty good thing going if you think about it. There's no such thing as a nurse. That's, you know, that's a well compensated job. I think everybody knows that one. Katie says GFC from NRC Las Vegas. Yeah, the, the tower is off another corner of the of my lot, I'm sure. So I have to run about 1700ft of line pole.
I think about, I don't know, maybe six or seven poles from the road where the tower is now down at the bottom of my concrete. We're going to take a power to go more towards the top. There's a kind of a plateau, a little bit of a bluff at the top. Natural platform has a view of the whole race and everything. So I'm going to have a footing from to 400, 400amp panel. So I'm just waiting for the close. They're just really behind. They just. It's a small utility. They geographically, they cover a lot of areas. Right. There's only a couple of engineers. So one of the guys quit, I guess, and went got a real job. Probably pays more. This poor guy trying to do it all himself and 18 weeks behind.
But inside the plant flying spring or something I don't know. Spring Creek is just south of ELO over the from the north side of Ry Mountain do. Quite a few and so that's what we're going to be doing higher build that place up. I got to do a lot of gravel work put in a small c a 1100 foot long driveway and car boss 1.1 acres. I got to do about 1200 cubic yards of cut still activity. So it's almost I thought I was going to be able to go vertical with the proceed and the failed alignment property but most like they're repenting of everything I have earthwork and the culvert tower the well.

Up all this down st. I can't believe how much stuff has gone up. But talking about development place like 10 years ago everything just doubled. You know. Crazy. So you can't take it with you, right? Let me explain something here for you John. When you buy a backhoe, current model year is $130,000 for medium sized one a huge bulldozer might be. You know what registration on my 10 yard dump truck is $2800 a year. That's where all this stuff comes from buddy. You know that's the business we're in. We build roads too and gates, Fences and Wells, etc. Hey I got a sign with you. I'm parked in my driveway to engine off and I've been gone since 6:30 this morning. I get home and shower and crash. Buddy, it's wonderful to meet you John. I hope to meet you on another night when I'm leaving home now 7D comes from 8.
All right. Very good. Likewise. I enjoy ch with you and go inside, do some nursing. 73nr 7g LA take care.

Good morning to you and. Whereabouts Are you. Okay? Roger. Roger.
I'm in Chico, and the name is Pete Papa Echo, Tango, Echo. And it's India, Whiskey Hotel, N6IWH. Okay, but your signal is pretty bad. Okay. Got a lot of mobile flutter. I. I didn't really copy. I heard something about Nevada, but you might want to go to high. Copy that. I am currently going through some hills, so that might be part of the problem, I think.
Picked you up a couple weeks ago from Chico, if you're hearing this. Anyway, do have a great day and thanks for. Yeah, that one wasn't that bad. I copied, you know, a little bit better, but. Yeah, you're in rough country. I guess so. We'll talk to you later. 10, 6, 9.
The gears. Monthly informal breakfast is held on the second Saturday of the month at 9am at the Farmer's Skillet, located at 690 Rio Lindo Avenue, Chico. All are welcome to attend. W FIC R H C Repeater Check 1.
Yeah, I am. Although I might be living. Holiday. I copied a little bit of that. Case it on yyq, something like that. Sorry. Anyway, later on down the coax. Talk to you later.
Kilo, November 6th. Sierra Lima, November. Monitoring 36 local. Hey, sierra lima, whatever this is n6iwh. Yeah. Are you a local? Are you on a plane? Care. Oh, shoot. And you know what? I don't have a local. I don't have it programmed. It would be a big hassle. I could try. Thanks for reminding me. Oh, okay, yeah, no problem on this.
Anyway. Yeah. Good morning. And it's the kn6sln out of monroe, california. Monitoring local.
36 local n6grg. Now there's a stranger coming in blasting KN6SLN said that. Well, I'll bet you have a little cold weather colder than I do. And it's not that warm here. N60RG. Yeah, it's a little chilly. It's it's not down freezing. I forget what it was. It was probably 38 something like that. But we got the got the fire fired up and it's blazing so we're in good shape. Yeah. I also find running and have I came in to grab my coffee. I have a routine I do starting at about 6:30 and.
Make it into. I I set up for coffee, say 6:15, run outside taking care of the sheep and other critters. At six. Right. Right. About 6:15, actually. Coffee's, coffee's brewing. I click the switch and run out there. When I get back in, it's, it's rude and perfect. And then I run over to the start the fire real quick. And then I run over to the HF radio and get on a net at 7192. So that's my routine in the morning. And I'm still listening to the guys on 7192, but they're the net's over. Oh, okay. So 7192, that's what, 40 meters or 20 meters? That's 40 meters.
Lower sideband. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, the. Oh, Steve came on last night. I was telling him about. This is. I found. I forgot what frequency it is. But Anyway, it was 80 meters. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't dial them in. I didn't talk to them because my antennas are kind of like. But I can hear them. And they were having a net on. On the AM side. Have you ever heard of that? Yeah. You know, there are guys who may be old timers. I guess I could be considered to be an old timer, but the amers are usually even older than I am. And that is old. Boy, that's really old. And then there's just collectors that collect these old.
AM radios and get them working. And that's who you're gonna hear over there. Yeah. Yeah. You're 100, right? Because I forgot. I forgot my freaks. I wish that I threw it down, but I caught them on there and I was listening to them and. And you're right, they were naming off some old, old radios that they refurbished. There's one guy, he was mailing. You know, you mail his. Mail the radio to him, he'll work on his pictures, mail it back to you. And one of the places I remember was down in Chino. Chino, California. Down in Southern California. And he was coming in pretty good up here. Well, you know, on 80 side band, low SB, lower sideband 8.
On Sunday morning. There's a net at 8. It starts. It net officially starts at 8am and then. But they just talk about stuff before that. Sometimes they'll start at 7 o'. Clock. Just chit chatting. I think you said you've heard that. But that net. But the guy that starts the net at 8am exactly is his name is Rich and he's 94. Yeah, yeah, that's. That's great. Yeah. Is that 3855? Is that the one you're talking about? Yes sir, 3855. And then the one Monday night which officially starts at 6:30. Which. But they take early check ins at 6:15.
Lower side band is 39:55. Yeah, well, you know, like I said, it was kind of. I. Yeah, I said I put that antenna up there on the pickup, you know, that 80 meter antenna, and ran coax up through the window here and. And that's how I was listening to them. I don't try to transmit them because of SWRs and all that good stuff. It's kind of wacko, and I don't want to mess up this new radio, but. Yeah, yeah, they were. I heard you and Steve on there, I guess, a couple weeks ago on that 3755. And then last night I was just running around, you know, checking stuff, and I ran Paul down. I said, wonder why I can't stop.
The men and then I figured out they were on AM and that was pretty interesting. Well, you know, interesting. I will, I. There's no reason to do it. I'm going to suggest this is just a technical detail on that am but sideband can hear them just perfectly if you're right exactly on frequency. When you're exactly on frequency, the carrier goes away. You can't hear that high pitch signal that you hear when you're off frequency. And you, you get there, you know, one sideband of the AM and it comes down in just perfectly. And I do that with wwv. That's how I hear W.
Wwv. I'm listening with Sideband. Now, what WWV is, is a timing thing. So it's a way to time some of my digital stuff and not have to have Internet. So I just made it. So I always did it that way, and that way I never have to have Internet. But. And I use Sideband to hear that station, wwv, which is. And I can hear their. Their voices just perfectly. See? So I just click my radio over to 10 megahertz, or 15 or 20 or 25, and it goes 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 megahertz. And I click it over to any one of those frequencies on Sideband. And I can hear everything I need to hear, including what they say. Their. Their speech. Yeah, I understand what you're talking about there, because you're either you're on frequency, but you're not. You're on the lower.
Side or, you know, the high side of that frequency. And so you be off. But like you said, if you dial it in. Perfect. It's got to be perfect. Then you're on frequency. But. Yeah. But anyway, I turned it over on am there on the am side and put in that it was 37 3700, I believe it was. And I dialed it in. They have it every. Every Monday night. I believe it is. Whatever last night was. They have it every night or every Monday night, once a week. And those guys were talking up a storm. Yeah. And at one time, sideband radios didn't have, you know, they were what they called 10 through 80. That was the typical.
Sideband radio before the modern day stuff, digital stuff that we have now. And the reason I'm saying that is they didn't include the 160 band. So if there's one place where you're more likely to hear an old radio on AM, it's 160. But nowadays. And you don't hear a lot on 160, by the way, at all. But nowadays, everybody's got 160am in their brand new sideband radio. So, you know, you don't have to, you can, you know, actually talk to these people. And that was the other thing was that if you're listening on sideband, you can't talk to them. You got to be on am. Yeah, yeah, I hear you there. But no, that was kind of actually, it was kind of neat. A lot of those old guys.
You know, they were, you know, they were talking old radios. I mean, like you said, they were old vintage radios. But. But they still worked. They still sounded good. The only thing was wrong with it, in my opinion, if there's anything wrong with it, was that the side banders was coming in as well as them, but they were, you know, they were above that, that noise level, if you will. Well, they may have been a little off frequency, too, because that's the thing about AM is it's very, very wide. It picks up all the upper sideband signals and the lower sideband signals. And if somebody's above it, but using lower sideband, say they're way above it, like, even as far as 3k seeds above that AM signal, which, if you're.
Operating sideband. If you're 3k seas away, you're far enough away. See? But on AM, no, wait, you're gonna be interfering with those AM guys. Yeah, yeah, I guess so. I. I like that. I don't know that much about it, but. But no, I was listening to him. You hear me the background, and I heard them say, especially the guy from Southern California, he said, the side managers are coming in, but they could still carry on with their net, because when they keyed up, everything went nothing but them on the air. Yeah, the AM receivers, they're definitely older and they may be as wide as 8 to 10 kcs. Wise and modern radios, even the cheaper ones like the one from.
India. If you look at it, it's got a crystal filter that really narrows down things so that the receiver doesn't pick up this stuff that's way off frequency. So you could have an AM on a sideband radio. You would not know you're interfering because you could have an AM station above you. If you're on lower sideband, you could have AM station above you, like 3 or 4 kcs above you. And you might not hear him. Although those old amers, they could be a little wide too. You know, you never knew those old radios, you know, they weren't as carefully set up as a new one. Yeah, I'm sure that. Yeah, we used to have a high gang. I forget that. I don't know, I was just probably 18 years old. 18.
19 years old. And it was a 2 meter radio. But you could buy a VFO and sit on top of it and you can go anywhere you want. And that was a nice radio. And I can't believe it. Of course, it was my brother's actually, and he let me use it. We left it at my mom's house. My mom. Mom. After everybody moved away, it stayed in the closet for years. And my brother went back to get it and she had gave it away. Yeah. You know, space situations. Your mom might have had to need. Need to move or move around or something. Everything changes so much. Sorry.
To hear that. But of course, the first, well, the farther back you go, the more you're going to hear. I can remember when sideband radios were still a little rare. When I was a Kid in the 60s, sideband radios were kind of rare. And I didn't have a very good receiver, but I could hear sideband on my am. I had a shortwave radio. And that's the very first thing I worked out with my dad. He got this shortwave radio and he let me buy it for him for like 10 or 15 bucks or something, you know. And it was a howler crafters s 38C. And I was using it to mostly just. Just pick up the shortwave broadcast stations. I could hear Cuba cussing us out.
All kinds of things like that. Stations all over the world. And I hear a little bit of sideband on that thing on that AM radio couldn't make it out at all. But it did have a bfo, a thing called bfo, which made it so you could tune in the sideband. Not very well. I mean, that sideband station had to be really strong. Then we had that flood in 64 and that's when every. That's when ham radio really got serious for me, anyway, Old time stuff. So the older you are, the more likely you're going to hear. AM station is the only reason I brought that up. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'll tell you what, as a kid, I'm talking 10 years old, I got a. Of course.
See them. Anybody that an adult, I guess you could say, let's say that have had a transistor radio I used to set up at night, because you get more stations on am. That's all it was. They had a few FM stations out there, but most of them was am. And I would go all over the United States, you know, Chicago from San Francisco. I listened to Chicago, stuff like that. I always thought that was pretty cool. But, no, I I'm, I'm going to keep my eyes open at a flea market, but I'm down there at Forsyth and see if I can get one of those over the radios pretty cheap, just so I can do that. AF Yeah. I mean, yeah, this one here will do am, but I'm just saying the older ones, it'd be kind of cool to do that.
Well, if you can get one that's working, they're kind of. The good ones are kind of large, but helicrafters are pretty common. S X series, Sierra X Ray series. If you look online, you'll see what they look like. And they're big old shortwave radios that had all the band and they almost always have a bfo. That's how you get the. That's how you tune in sideband. I would just basically recommend them, though, for the AM stations you're hearing and a lot of shortwave, HF shortwave all over the world. I don't know what's going on on HF shortwave. Now. I do have a tiny little radio that's got all that.
Stuff, though. That's another way you can do this. There's tiny little radios out there. Ally Express has them for 50 bucks. They're actually extremely good receivers, and you can plug an antenna into them. So that's another way to do it without getting that great. BQ helicopters. The problem with helicopters is if they need work, you got to be a technician to do it. It's pretty basic work, but you got to be a technician. Unless it's a tube, you just got to be able to get that tube. Yeah, well, like I said, I've seen a lot of them in the flea market that are tube type. And matter of fact, I can think of twice in the five years I've been going to Quartzite that I've run across radio. What is this? They said, well, it's a short one.
Whatever. It's a transceiver. It's, you know, back and forth. And there was like, $25 for it. And I hear it was that old. And it was. Am I now. Of course, I didn't know what I was talking about. I. And there's another guy had one for, like, 75 bucks, I think it was. But like you said, they were all. At that time, and I don't think they knew what they had because you go to Ham Fest, they were like 600 bucks for those dudes. Well, you know what? I would actually recommend even more than going with one of those helicopters, which is going to take up a lot of space, and if anything ever happens to it, you've got what they call a boat anchor.
Nowadays, I would go with one of these more modern ones and I would order it. I know it may be way off your general ordering what you generally do, but I would order it from Ally Express because everything has settled down and there's basically no tariff hassle. It just works. And I'm looking at one right now. It's one of the best shortwave radios on the planet, and It's a Tech Sun Tec S u n P o 3 80.
4/x something. It's a nice one. Not very large, they're very small. But they have an antenna, a place, a way that you can plug an antenna into them and they'll receive anything, including AM and radio. Just everything. The one I'm looking at is $45. And there's a even better one with bigger speakers and stuff. Bigger screen for 69 on the same page. So yeah, that's what I would do. Yeah, well, no, I'm just, I'm just, I'm playing now. I got, I got two good radios at and tube here and actually I got 3, 2 meters now. I got this kid butt over here I just used for a scanner.
I got one to pick up one sitting on the dish one and then the. Hm. So I mean, you know, I, I just, you know, go to those places, have fun, you know, don't double soak a whole lot of money in it. But see what happens with the AM just having fun with it. Yeah. The only reason I'm saying go with one of these new ones is because the chances of one of these older shortwave radios having a problem that is not tube related is really good. Dude, these things are between 50 and 75 years old. So, you know, they require work and that's why I get one of these little guys $35 on the way.
Up from, from I was, I would spend say 45 for one of those tech sun world renowned radios. I mean these, these short wave little shortwave radios are just absolutely incredible. So I've got one, I've got a little texture. Yeah, I forget what that. The dx, DX something. Now I bought this radio at Livermore. It was the Livermore Ham swap computer swap. The guy sold it to me for 20 bucks, guaranteed to work. He priced it up, it worked. I brought it home. It worked. There was nothing wrong with it. But the only thing is, is I don't know what I know.
Down about the antenna lengths and, you know, 10 meters, 20 meters, that kind of stuff like that. Short wave antennas. I thought you just threw a wire out the window at that time. Of course, we're talking 20 years ago. I thought we just throw a wire out the window and should work. Well, I could never get it, so I lost interest and, you know, I threw it away. I threw it dumpster. Well, I had a Sierra 38s 38 helicopter was the first radio I ever had. Now, back in those days, everybody had a five tube AM radio. It was a stage standard circuit. One of my earliest electronics classes, the guy says he was an older guy and he says,
Well, I want everybody to memorize the circuit in a five tube AM radio. Well, I already had it memorized because I had that S38 and the S38. All it was was a five tube AM radio, like the one you'd have on your. In your kitchen listening to the. Whatever program, you know, on am. It was just like that. But they did some stuff with the. The RF part of it, you know, way up in the upper part of it. They put extra coils in and stuff like that and turned it into a shortwave radio. It was well known as the radio that was going to shock the hell out of you. Because all those radios, one side of the chassis was hooked directly to the ac, and the other side was hooked to, you know, the. All the tubes and everything. The tubes were in series.
The tubes were in series. So they. One end of the tube, they had these things called filaments. And one end of the tubes was hooked directly to the AC line and the other, both. Both ends of the tubes were hooked directly to the AC line. On the filament in series, though, they got 35 volt 1, a 50 volt 1, and 3 or 412 volt ones and it adds up to 110 volt. But that was my first shortwave radio. I wouldn't recommend it. Yeah, I got. Matter of fact, I got some 19. I will say they were built back in 1920 or 1930. Wood right here. AM radio. They're wood. That's what the case is. Built on them. And then I.
I have a lot. I have one, two regular AF radios that are like that. You don't touch them inside when they're plugged in because they'll bite you. Well, the only shortwave radio I have that works is the Z is the Tecsun, the little shortwave modern shortwave radio. But I do have three partially working Zenith Transoceanic. Zenith Transoceanic. And they were built back in the days when all the airplanes were flying around with all tube radios in them and the only way they could tell where they were was to have it directed.
Directional antenna on, like, really low frequencies that they could move around, that they could point various things. And they call them the Clippers. Some of them would land in the water. But, yeah, this radio was from those days, you know, the Zenith Transoceanic. Yeah, it's amazing the electronics that, you know, people put together, engineers put together, you know, for the radios and stuff. Like I said, you know, I didn't want, you know, you know, the AM radio back in 1961, I believe it is. I believe it was 61 or 62. They came out with a portable.
Radio that had a battery in it that it was a.m. okay, you can drop plugged into a console and a little console. And my dad had bought that from my mom when they first came out, so that she take it out in the yard or she plug it into this console and I ended up with it. I got to find a battery for it. That's the only thing is trying to find the battery that makes it work. Well, in 1960, the very, very first little transistor radios came out that you could actually almost fit in your pocket. And I had one of those. I no longer have it, of course, but I was a kid running around with a little transistor radio at 10 years old that could be.
W e6a x n repeater.
Pick up AM radio. A little Sony, a little Sony. They were great radios. Yeah, this was. RCA has a little picture of the. Not picture, but a little statue or a little emblem on the front of the speaker of the console. And the console was only maybe a foot long, maybe 6 inches wide, with a big speaker in it. And then you plug your radio and whatever do it play through that speaker, or when you unplug the radio from it and you took it, which you. It was probably maybe 8 inches by 1 inch, 2 inch, something like that. But anyway, it's small and you carry it and have a little speaker in there for the portable. Yeah, I just kept it all these years and.
I got it packed away, but I think it's a 9 volt battery that, you know, is made to charge and discharge and you plug it in, it charges up. Well, one of the radios I wanted to mention from those days, probably the last radio I'm going to mention is my, my dad, mom and dad had purchased a radio called a Midwest. And it was from back in the days when the wooden radios you're talking about were huge. You know, one of the advertisements that they had for one of the radios was that you could. It was so tall, you didn't have to stoop down, you didn't have to lower your head at all.
Even though it was sitting on the floor, you didn't have to lower your head at all to see the dial. And they called that radio a stand up, no soup radio. And that was a different brand than Midwest. Midwest, though was that type of radio they had. They were all tube, of course, and they had a speaker in there that did not have a magnet. What it had was a DC coil that served as the maintenance and that's how. And it was a woofer, you know, that was the woofer in there. A lot of bass, you know, big, big speakers. Yeah, it's amazing the way they come up with. Yeah, I hear you. But you know, like I said, I don't know. I was just. It kind of took me back when I heard that AM on there last night and I sit there and listen to them for a couple of hours. Well, maybe not a couple of hours for an hour. Anyway, I listened to for quite long.
And those guys, you know, they, like you said, they all knew how to, you know, work on them, light them up and all that other good stuff. Stuff that I don't know how to do. But they did. They were talking about it. But anyway, it was pretty interesting to me. Yeah. And if you find one. Now, one of the primary things that craps out, besides the tubes. Tubes can be still working. You know, they don't dry out or anything. But there's a thing in there called an electrolytic capacitor. And you know how you had DC higher voltages, you know, 100 to 150 volts on up, it could go as high as 600 volts. And the electrolytic capacitor filtered the power supply. So you turn that radio.
On. And the first thing you might hear if it's partially working is a big old hum. And that means your electrolytics are gone. And you have to find these current versions of the old time electrolytic capacitors and replace them. So that's the first thing you have to do on a lot of these old AM radios that they've been sitting in somebody's closet for 50 years. Yeah, yeah, I hear you there. Yeah, I have a 400 watt Palomar in a key up 6. If you tune it just right and blew tubes up. And that was way back in the 70s. That's when you can get tubes. Matter of fact, the technician that replaced the tube, he couldn't find.
The tubes that was originally in it. And when he did find the tubes that would work in it, I went ahead and bought another set. So I. From Westinghouse. And that's. That was the tube with Westinghouse. Well, if you look around, I mean, there are people who have huge collections of tooth in the original boxes from 1960, and they don't sell them for a lot because there's so many. It's just like buying a vinyl record, you know, you might have a little trouble finding some of the stuff that I've got. I've got one made by Edison. It actually looks like a tube.
Not tube like it. It's shaped like a. A toilet paper tube, that kind of a tube, but it's a little bit bigger than that. And it's black plastic. And it rotates. It's got. And it's got things very similar to a record on it. But anyway, you know, tubes are a little more rare than records, but regular records, you know, like 33 RPM. But there's people that have kept these old collections, and the problem is that they will die. And there's these huge, huge collections of tubes that nobody wants to mess with. They throw them away. So little by little, they're starting to disappear. Yeah, I've seen them on, on the air.
Internet where, you know, people say, what are all these? I mean, they would literally say of my, you know, my dad or something like that has passed and I have found these in the attic and they have all these tubes and they say, what does these go to? Does anybody know? Yeah, and the thing is, they go to something. You can, you know, if you had that book, there is a book back in the 60s that you cross reference the tube. And I know you know what I'm talking about. You don't have to have the Pacific tube. You have one that cross reference that does the same thing, you know what I'm saying?
But yeah, they. They have on. On the Internet sometimes during estate sales and that kind of thing like that. You're right there. But anyway, Mike, I'm gonna have to get out and go do something, even if it is wrong. And anyway, it was nice talking to you. So. So anyway, we'll be talking to you later on, so. And this be KN6SLM. We're gonna be clear on yourself. Yeah, you may get me mobile soon here and then I'll be out of reach. But anyway, so have a great holiday. And yeah, take a look at Ally Express. Just put the word shortwave radio in there. L I, D A L I E X P R E S S the website.
Put shortwave radio in the search thing. And you'll see all the stuff I'm talking about come up the more modern, inexpensive radios that are out there. All right. Talk to you later. N60RG.
