And that was strange. To find out what I found out about those adapters, I. I've been looking on Ally Express with no luck yet. Trying to figure out why that happened. Alrighty. Well, since the other mic is mobile, where are you headed and what are you up to? I'm stationary. I was actually asking if you were mobile. Okay, copy that. Nope, here's the qth. Been here all day. I'll be mobile tomorrow a couple times, but then I'll be back in the evening. Hopefully before it's too dark. Well, I'm just.

Resetting my JSA call because stupid Windows machine decided maybe it had to update or something. And on that, what we're talking about with that adapter thing is The Chinese use M10 metric 10 and this other system uses 38 inch and there's a bunch of thread adapters, threaded adapters and stuff and things that I thought were going to be M10 10 were not M10 were not metric. The Chinese are mixing it up all over the place. Well, yeah, I've definitely seen them on Amazon. And I think the ham radio guy, the new tested guy, is put a couple on his videos before because he's working on this.

He calls it a DX Commando, kind of like a DX Commander, but using ham sticks. And some of them have M10s, and some of them have 3, 8, 24. So he's had to use some of these adapters anyways. I know they exist. And there's a couple different ones, you know, male to male, female to male, you know, the normal. The normal configurations anyway. What a pain. But, you know, it's kind of the way it is. Even like with cell phones and stuff, there's, in some ways, there's no universal accessories and things. How about we could have an argument or a debate rather, about Bluetooth devices that don't work on ham radio equipment. Oh, what do you think about that, Michael? Not much incidental.

While I have you, is the 8900 offline? Yes, sir. I think I figured out a way to. I thought I was going to have to buy this part and I think I figured out a way to make it, adapt it and make it work. It's a flat ribbon cable, a really kind of a small one, and it got a defect on one end. And I think I can fix it. So that's coming up soon, probably right after Thanksgiving. And yeah, we're talking about these adapters for photo antennas, you know, portable antennas that we're trying to all trying to get set up for. And it's so far, Steve, it's looking up like this 40 meter coil that they sell. It looks like the one they sold me had M10 on one end.

And three, eight on the other, but I haven't been able to quite prove it just yet. Yeah, well, I don't know how to prove it other than if you have other things with that in it, right? Like if you have a ham stick or like those fire sticks for CBEs, maybe those probably have 3, 8, 24. So you could probably confirm that to some degree maybe, huh? I don't know. But yeah, I don't know how else other than to go to the store like these hardware and buy bolts with the right thread, you know, Then you could try them or nuts. Conversely, I don't know how else other than that. Jeremy has a very fancy snap on set of dies and threaders, but those are in the multiple hundreds of dollars and I was able to borrow one to.

Chase out the threads in my shelagons that I am stripped out. So I know he's got that device. And that's nice if a person has dies and. And you know the other part that does the, the female side. But anyway, I don't know. So I wish you the best of luck on that. KN6MGK. Yeah, the term is tap and dyes. I think the tap is the female side maybe. And the D. Or maybe I've got it back mixed up. But anyway, okay, so you know the, the one that has the PL. The SO239 on it. Socket, you know, that's got M10 on both ends. So I can, I can confirm that I've got M10 on that end. The thing that gets me is the other end of the coil. I think the coil was female on both ends. Anyway, I'm all confused now.

I was shocked to find out that screwing the two adapters together and then using it as one giant adapter, I was able to get everything together. I mean, that was I'm going like, what? Well, the only other comment I have on my cheap vertical as I set it up let's see here. Yesterday, real quick over at the at the park, and probably had it up in about five minutes. Now, it was really slow for calling cq, and I only had a little bit of time, but right away, I got Russia on CW. And then it probably took me about another 10 minutes, but finally a guy from France came in. So I got Russia, then I got France. And then I spent another about a half hour or so getting about eight other stations that were all seemed more local, like or.

Again. Arizona, I got one. Nebraska, I don't think I got anything really east coast this time. But anyway, I only got my 10 contacts and I was out of there. Had to go. But anyway, I was pretty impressed on getting Russia and then France right afterwards. Well, if you keep talking about all these crazy worldwide DX things on a simple. It's a simple antenna system, Michael. It's a simple thing. I'm getting all my parts from China, and I bought them individually and, I don't know, have to head it up and see if that was the right way to go. You can get little kits, but they're very cheap. And. And they. The one I think that Steve is talking about, what it is, is a 5.6 meter, which is going to be.

Be probably about 16 or 17ft width. That collapses down to about maybe a foot. So it's got, you know, multiple sections and you pull them out. It's so cool. And I've got that much. I think that's what Steve's talking about. That would be 17 pieces. What's that? Now, if it's 17ft, if that's what you said, it collapses to one foot. That would be like 17 sections, wouldn't it? Well, if they were a foot each, but, you know, I don't know what they are each distance of each section, but there it's a bunch of sections, and then you pull them all out and you end up with five.

Meters length. Is it strong or cheaply built? Portable situations, you know, where you put it up and take it down in not too long. Not like meant for mounting on a building with all kinds of winds and stuff. So for what it's designed for, it's plenty strong enough, but it would only work for that sort of portable temporary operation. On another note, is Tom going to let you do what you want to do with what? If it's the Molly, I don't remember which location. No, and I'm just waiting for. Well, see, there's a chance that.

Building was changed, so it doesn't do so because the building was modifying PGE's power. So there's a chance it was changed and the problem's gone. But, you know, if they won't tell me that that's what's going on, then I won't know. And if, if it has, if the building problem has been fixed, then the repeater's not, probably not going to die. That's probably the only way I'll know is that the repeater won't die. But if that's been done, then the repeater won't be needing to be changed. So, yeah, I'm. I'm not worried about it. I have lots to do and, you know, that's fine.

I wanted to say that, yeah, as far as the strength of that antenna that Mike's talking about, yeah, it's made for portable use like he said and it probably has about 15 sections in it anyway. It might have 17 sections and he's describing it right. The glass is pretty, pretty small. I don't know if it's 12 inches but it might be 14 or something like that. And then there's a drive stake on it that you can take off of course, but I've been leaving mine on it and I've been leaving my radials wrapped around the drive stake so I could just unfurl those radials real quick, stick it in the ground, put it up and six radials that I built, built whatever, I cut them and stick them down and right away, I mean, it's like this. Last time I checked it I had 1.1 SWR match on it on 20 meters. So it works pretty.

Fast. I have a BNC connector on it and I have BNC feed line going to BNC on my radio and can be up pretty fast. So I like it. Demonstrated it to another guy just in front of my house the other day by leaning it up against his truck. And I didn't even unfurl the radial too much. Just kind of threw him out real quick and put my radio on that and made a contact just, just to Los Angeles real quick just to show him how fast it could happen. And he was pretty impressed with that. So he said, oh, there's no repeaters being used and stuff? Nope, it's just straight, you know, just on that antenna right there. So anyway, it's pretty fun. That's pretty fun. I enjoy that. KN6MGK. Yeah. Michael, are you at General Extra? And I was going to ask either one of you, is there still.

A 6 meter repeater in tracing. It used to be years ago, but I haven't been current. No idea? No idea. Whoever goes down there, I would say I have no idea either. Are either of you planning a winter field day? The club I joined here, Yuba, doesn't do it. Some individuals do it at home qth, but that's it. Well, I can comment that the Garters group has decided to go to the Black Butte Lake area. Black Butte?

Lake, which is about 10 minutes, about 10 minutes west of Orland, California, should be a fairly easy place to find. But it'll just depend on where they choose what part of the lake, you know, you could be on. You know, the I'm guessing it's going to be on the more east or south or southeast kind of part of the lake. So that'll be a little bit closer to interstate versus being a little further away. But that's just a guess because those that are in charge have not decided the exact location on Black Butte Lake yet. That's better than Willow Creek. Much closer. By Willow Creek. You know, the Willow Creek that I know of this.

Way over by the coast. So. Is that what you're talking about? No. Tell him, Steve, that I think it's Willow Creek. Or is it? Yeah, on the way to Stonyford, I think. Okay. I forget the name of that creek, but it's not Willow Creek. Willow Creek. I don't think I could be wrong, Steve. What's the name of that town? That's near where we went, and it was real windy. Well, there's a lot of little towns out there, so I don't. I don't know. Yeah, I mean, you go depending on which direction you come from, but you certainly might have come through Willows. I'm thinking, to get over there, but you.

Yeah, it was west and also north of Orland to go out there off of Highway 162. And there is a couple creeks out that way, but I don't know the names of them. One of them I do know is what is that? That one is gosh, Stony Creek, I think. Stoney Creek. That's one of them. The other one might be Tombs. T O M B s anyway, but I'm not sure without looking at a map, those exact locations, but they're out that direction. Yeah, I think he's talking about Willows, but the ranch was a little farther north. Actually, the ranch is closer to Black Butte Lake there 10 than it is Willows, if I understand what it is. But.

Yeah. After that situation they had at the ranch, it's the one that they can get anything going on the winter field day. That was a rough one. And I'm setting my timing right now. Here. I just set my time on Jay as a call. I don't think that method works for FT8. That's why the tech prepper guy showed how he was doing it for the whole computer system. And using wwv like that, KS8 has that special feature which is pretty nice to wear. You can, you know, I think you can just set now or whatever, you know, set time now and you hit it at just the right time. Right when that comes off and you're close enough.

So I need to try that sometime here. But I will concur that what Mike N6TRG said in regards to getting anything going for Winter Field Day for the Guards group is tough after that ordeal. In fact, I think that several members are not rejoining, likely, including myself, so so that's kind of what's going on there. But for Winter Field Day, I probably would go out there anyway and join them if they wanted me to. Everyone's always welcome at Field Day events, so I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem, but I don't get too involved in going to meetings and being involved at the board or any of that stuff. I'm not rejoining the Gears group either, so if I join any of them at all, maybe I'll tony a little bit of mine to the.

Paradise Group because they're the only ones that seem to want to have a couple of C4FM wires, x capable machines that I do use in the area. So anyway, that's what's going on. Back to Michael and Linda. Go ahead, Michael. Well, I would not be surprised that Schmitty doesn't. He was at three clubs. So I mean, that's kind of a lot. We had two in Marin, and I said, you know, one is enough. I was kind of volunteered into being an elder. That took a lot of time, even beyond the meeting once a month. I mean, it was like a weekly thing. Either had somebody come to my home or I went to theirs and configured their radios, and I configured some old radio. It took me a while to figure out how to do them. There's one gallery in the Marine Corps in Vietnam.

After the program. These radios, and they were ancient, they only had like 10 memories each and they were brick pretty big. I guess that was mostly the battery. I don't know how she charged them, but just big walkie talkies. But yeah, up here, you know, the Yuba center doesn't do much. I don't know if I'm going to review my tunes next year. We'll see. Oh, By the way, Steve, I'm plus 400 cycles from everybody else and this Windows machine slowly creeps down to minus 400, so works good. And I've been told when you set the js, the clock inside the JSA call program, it sets the system clock. So FT8, which uses what they use is a version of that automatic.

Thing, it looks at the other signals, you know, it looks at the other people on the air and grabs time from them. So I think it was shortened the time setting portion of the what the machine has to do. If you use this JSA call thing first. Well, that would be awesome if it did, because then a guy would just go into JS8, time it that way first. And if you say that it would go back and set the clock of the computer to be the same, that would be pretty nice because then if you were out somewhere else, then you can go with FT8 or something afterwards or whatever. So any event, that's nice.

I'm unsure of that, but it'll be worth testing. Let's see here. What else? I'll switch subjects a little bit and go to meshtastic because I've been setting up a couple of meshtastic nodes that I purchased. I did that a couple years ago and couldn't get anyone else involved. Well, seems like there is a group of people here that are now, and it's a lot simpler. They have a lot easier programs to flash the devices and so forth so people can quickly get set up. Doesn't require any sort of ham licensing, by the way. I was at first starting to have a difficult time again here with discovering other notes, but another friend led me on to try the different mode of medium fast instead of long fast. So I did try that mode, and that's what it seems like people here in Chico are using.

Because now I've discovered seven other nodes. So evidently there are a few people around me here that my little node can hear, so that's good. Lastly, I'll say the Yuba Sutter group. I don't think they do winter field day, but they do summer field day. And they do these fox hunts, which I've always thought that might be kind of fun to do one of their fox hunts. I know that. And they've been pretty active on the repeater, too. At least they were. So that's all I got about them. KN6MGK back to Michael and Linda. Well, the Lincoln Amateur Radio Club is more active than Yuba. Their repeater is. You probably can't get it, but I hear about standing that got more traffic thanks to Mike.

You know, I would think that if Michael had a mesh on the way the cities are placed in that area, that there's a chance that you could bounce from one node to another and make it overdo Michael. But I know next to nothing about, about mesh, so I know that I am where I am. I'm not going to hear another node and I'd have to make it 15 miles through a bunch of trees and so forth to make it to a node down in the Reading area. I know there are people who mess with it in Reading. They came to the Ventronics meetup one year and they were quite technical. What band I should think is the best task to operate on?

Well, I'll speak to that in the United States. I think it's about 915 megahertz right around there. So you can you can operate them on different bands, especially since you have a ham license. But then you have to turn that section of the node. There's a slider you turn for a ham. And of course, you're supposed to be licensed to use, like, the 70 centimeter band, for instance. But anyway, to Mike and ready, I would still want to. I guess you don't really have to care about it. But if you did care about it, you could even build some of these nodes cheap, like 20 bucks or whatever. You could buy. The first note I ever bought, I bought on AliExpress, so. And when I use the word build these days, really, what I'm saying is you assemble. So I think it takes about.

Five to 10 minutes to put one together. I mean maybe a little bit longer on the first one but I bought two of them and you know bam, it's, it's fast. But anyway just bringing one with you into town sometime maybe putting a little slightly better antenna on it, you know. But you know finding out what mode they're using around running and that way a person could be prepared to be able to try to communicate with them in the area or something or at least know because that takes time to figure out that they're not using long fast or using medium fast. And then you could always maybe there'll be other people in the future more near to you that would have a node so it would make multiple hops to get into running maybe. And to Mike and Linda I would think if he had ones and if there was one somewhere around the center of Butte or something like that it'd be like magic.

Know, somehow he could reach that one, then it could get into Sacramento and stuff. Who knows? But anyway, it's encouraging to know that there's more people doing that now, and there's some possibilities of getting out if I start communicating on it, and I'll find out how far I can get. I'll certainly update you guys. KN6MGK. Not the club I was in, but there was another club that was Mars Warren. Amateur Media Society had several people into that. They had several programs, presentations that they were studying. To be honest with you, at the time I was invited. I did not understand it at all, but I do now. And I was going to ask, what kind of attendance do you use? Conditions or verticals or what do you use? Well, I can tell you what.

N6KN6KNE. Gave me the guy that went to Columbia, he gave me a 900 MHz beam that's made up of a whole bunch of loops on this fairly long pole. I'd say maybe 10 loops on it. It's probably pretty high gain, but probably very narrow gain. So finding a node on it would probably take some time because you know you're going to be moving it all over the place. Go ahead, Steve. Let you know, insect you. Well, that does sound like it's up your alley, though. You know, something fun to try and mess with and not too costly if you already have that beam. Might be kind of fun if you had a little node just on your place and you had that beam.

Right at somebody else's node that's all you'd need because they're attached to everybody else so have a nice little mesh system like that. But I'll be curious to find out if I'm able to make any good significant comms with it so far. I have to. There's another guy over here that I know that's going to put one up so I need to inform him real quick here what's going on so he knows. But once he gets his up and he's a little bit further to the west of me, I'm hoping to hit Jeremy in Orland eventually if I get enough people there's another guy over out that way I might talk into getting over there and getting something up on his house. So that's how you try to build the network anyway and I think it would be up Mike and Linda's alley because he's into more packet and that's basically what this is. It's some sort of a packet type system, just a different little protocol I guess.

But kind of like an APRS or something where you can. That passes on GPS information. You can anyway, and altitudes and weather and all kinds of stuff that can be passed on there. I guess there's nothing I've gotten into so far. So anyway, a little like a mesh system, kind of like APRs or something, where messages can be sent back and forth and all on this network that can get large enough, like around Sacramento. I'm sure it's real busy. Well, Okay, I'll send it back to Mike and reading in a second. The only answer I've got right now is that you can set up each device as to how many hops you want it to do so.

Yeah. The answer is there's a common channel, like in this case, we're using medium fast over here. But then you can also set up encrypted private channels in order for the other person to get messages. You know, they have to have a QR code so that they have the encryption key. And that's how you set up a private network. And it will still use my understanding is it'll still use the other people's devices, the same ones that are using, say, like medium fast or whatever. They'll use their devices to retransmit your signal to, except they won't be able to read it because they don't have the encryption code. So that's my understanding so far. So I can't demonstrate it right now because I just finally got an outside antenna. And by the way, I think that was another question you had asked what antennas to use or whatever. But.

Right now I have it up on the outside of my house on a disk cone. The disc cone will do up to like 1.2 GHz, I think it is, you know. So anyway, it will definitely do the 900 MHz range. So it seems to be working so far. KN6MGK. Back to Mike and Linda. Is your discone fiberglass? No, I forget the model number. Maybe it's tram. I think it's 1481 or something like that. Anyway, it is stainless, I think is what it's probably stainless. Yep. And it wasn't too expensive when I bought it. Everything's gotten more expensive now, but I think it was around $50.

They can be when you're describing those loops. Okay, I'm envisioning like a pole with the loop perpendicular to the pole. That's all parallel to each other. Is that how it is? Are you talking about my antenna, Michael? Affirmative. That's exactly what that has. And one of them is a driven element. I think it's the typical Yankee style thing where you have the reflector on the very back end and then you have the driven element. Then you have a whole bunch of director elements that are a little bit shorter and. Yeah, quite a little piece of work. He didn't have any use for it in Jones Valley, so. But.

It could get me into writing and to some of the nodes and writing. So I should. By the way, Steve, I have a. I have the ham radio version, which is a 1 watt nod. He might be chowing down on a corn dog, something like that. Would you. Do we lose you, Steve? No, I was hearing things from a distance there, but I was grabbing some cheese. Yeah, grabbing some cheese so I could snack while.

Hear you guys go ahead. Though I did hear you say you have the 1 watt version. That's cool. Yeah. I don't know how I would use it yet, but anyway, that's cool. Yeah. And I think my tele wave meter is high enough frequency that it would measure 1 watt at 900 MHz, but I have to look at the back of it. I can't remember. It's a very wide bandwidth meter though, so I think it'll work. And so, yeah, the only thing is, when you're putting out a strong signal and everybody else has got a weak signal, then the problem is hearing them. Not so much them hearing you as, you know, unless somebody else has a 1 watt, you know, maybe some non ham that just says, well, who's ever going to know? And they get the one watt. But.

I think the non hams are told to have a lower power. I forget what it is. Maybe 1/10 of a watt or something. Well let's say what's interesting is that on these they have a, they're set to like I think the number 30 but there's a spot rush slider in the app where you can, you can have RF gain, you can turn it up. So I'm not sure what that does exactly. It doesn't seem like it's transmit gain so I don't understand. Maybe it's just the sensitivity, I don't know. So it's something to play with. But yeah, if your nodes, you know, this is what I don't know also by the way it's like let's say if your node is a HAM compliant one with 1 watt and you put it out there and you're a ham, so that's cool for you but then other people's nose go through yours.

Then I don't know all the logistics of all that, and I don't really care, to be honest. But I know that some people probably would. Well, from what I've seen of these unlicensed activities, I don't think they would care whether mine was a licensed ham one or not. I doubt that the FCC would care either. But anyway, I just decided what the heck, it wasn't that much money and I grabbed it. And I think I might have the regular type. Also. What would really be cool is if there was one on Shastibali, but I really doubt it. There's almost nothing ham radio on jasabali Other than us and the I think the APRs might be still working. I I do see a no, that call. No, that's not the one on Jesse Bali. So I see a wild.

W3 and the W5. And I think the W5 is down there on the mountain this repeater's on. Well, that would be another trick. If you got one up that way that. Sorry, that your station or your location, you'd have another node there that could hit the one that you put up a little higher up over there. And if that one can hit back into reading, you know, and you put a solar panel on it, they have these, so tires, tiny solar panels and stuff. Now, then you'd be in the reading through the other node. So that'd be cool. And then everybody else would be able to use that node too.

Yeah, the only problem with doing it on the park property is they're so picky about permits and all that crap and maybe even want money for the permit, but. And that's the thing about sites like where this repeater is, and it's Forest Service. Or in my case, the one I would be looking at would be blm, which is plaster, at least Anderson. It might. Might do real pretty well in Redding, too. I don't know. Mule Mountain. Can you hit Bella Vista?

There's a town up here that's similar to the name Depil it. I don't think that's quite the right name, but I know where you're talking about. I believe to the east of Reading, and not necessarily. I don't. I don't know how well I can hit it direct, but maybe from Yule Mountain I could hit it. And it would be perfect into Bali. But I don't know if Bali is going to be available to me or not. That's exactly what I was thinking. Well, see, I've always wanted to do a little bit more up there, and I suppose.

Tom is saying no because of the incredible amount of regular regulated regulation in the park. I mean, they are. The park is just crazy with regulation. So, you know, somebody found it up there and it wasn't authorized. Who knows? Could impact Carla. So I can understand that. I didn't know that. But I'm not surprised with the regulation that's been a problem in the Bay Area parks also, especially going way back when the Golden Gate National Recreation Area came all the way east to, in some areas, to Highway 101, it kind of wrecked a lot of places for amateur radio repeaters.

And the thing about a PODA like Steve is doing a PODA is a temporary thing, so you can get away with it anywhere on the park, in the park. You know, as long as you have a path into the park. You could do whatever you want with ham radio. But it's when you put something in the park and leave it there, that's a different story. I'm not current, but here's the Just as I was leaving, what was happening in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area? Some of the repeater. There's actually a lot of repeaters on Mount Ham, which, of course, that got us all into that area. And they wanted to. I don't know if they won or lost, because this is about what I lose, but they wanted to raise the liability insurance.

Ham shacks up on the hilltops from $1 billion liability to $2 million. And that was just not sustainable for their club. So they were fighting it. That's about when I moved, so I don't know what happened. Also, break and weed eating clearing around some of the hamshites. You had to get a permit from the National Golden Gate National Recreation Area in order to weed eat around your shack. I mean, and that wasn't required before. It's just gotten ridiculous. Some of these agencies really get into trying to regulate and, you know, force everybody to pay for a permit. About to breathe and to wear a pair of glasses, you have to have a permit. You know, it's just nuts. And up here in the Reading area, the city of Redding is one the of.

Of the worst, worst places for that. They want you to have a permit, and the county, too, once you have have a permit to do just about anything anywhere. And and they charge a fair amount of money for these permits. So and yet, some of the things that are on the regulations, like, for instance, one person in this community put one of those doughboy pools up and then has these wild parties, and they have children and grandchildren coming over, and one of the grandchildren drowned in the pool. Well, turns out there's a regulation that says you're supposed to have a little fence around the pool to keep your grandchildren from drowning in your pool. And that's in the planning commission regulations. And the pool was could be seen right from the the road every day by all these planning commission guys, and nobody did a darn thing about it. So they lost their child.

So we could go on and on about that. So anyway, yeah, these antennas are pretty cool. If you go to Ally Express, Michael, and then you type in 5.6 meter extendable whip or something like that, 5.6 meter whip should do it at Ally Express. And, and the type of antennas that we're messing with will come up. They're basically, they're just verticals. You can be on any band you want with, you know, one to one SWR because they collapse to whatever size you want. They only go out to.

20 meters by themselves with a coil, I can get 40 meters, but, yeah, that's what it's all about. I may have doubled you. There are. These are decades old. I think there are abandoned US Forest Service lookouts at various locations throughout the Sierras and even the coast ranges. Are we allowed to put repeaters in those areas? Well, I don't know how, what sort of paperwork one would have to do, but. For instance, there's a lookout on Bully Soup, and the Weaverville ham radio group has a repeater on it, and so it is.

Being done. I like I say, though, I, I would think if it's, if it's active, an active lookout, then they're definitely going to have paperwork. If it's an inactive lookout, hard to say what would happen there. Yeah, I was thinking inactive lookout, some that have been abandoned because they've been replaced with cameras. Not necessarily at the same locations either. But almost all of these lookout locations have various repeaters on them, you know, logging companies and all sorts of things on there. So they're not really entirely abandoned. None of them, I don't think they're all, they're all, they've all got something going on on them, solar panels and stuff. There was one place where.

They were getting away with murder in the Willow Creek area. They didn't have to file any permits or anything for that one. There are a few places where you can do things, but it varies. You know, some places you're regulated to death, Particularly on the coast. And it's not just the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. If you're thinking Coast Coastal Commission, which is, I believe, state high from San Diego to Smith River. Yeah, you know, that's special circumstances there. Coastal stuff you get into in the Bay Area, you get into higher populations.

And everybody wants there to be that regulated agency that's pulling in a few bucks by selling you permits and on and on. I just heard on the radio last week that there's something like only 212 building permits in Los Angeles city when there's thousands of homes at these be rebuilt and going real slow. And although the governor said he was going to streamline this, that hasn't happened. Yeah. That's where the fire was, right? Yes. KI6UJX. Yeah, that's typically what, you know, Steve's the one that could tell you what happened in Paradise. They actually tightened up the permit situation in paradise, so can't even.

And what duplex are we using? I bought a duplexer off AliExpress. And then I used two Baofengs. A basic UV5R for the receiver and then the UV5RM for the transmitter side. And then I used. For the handheld, I had a Baofeng 888 and connected it to an antenna.

That's about 10ft up on my house. And I just started walking, and I walked close to a mile away, and it was still working perfectly. That's amazing. So those. That's a complete HT solution, right? So 5 watts? Actually, yeah. I had the transmitter on low power, so it was probably closer to 2 watts. And the only problem is, of course, the. The way the. The transmitter is triggered is with the vox circuit. And so it wouldn't. The transmitter wouldn't open up until I send something into the. The handheld. So that would automatically clip it. First you want to say open or something and then start talking. I don't know. I need to test it more. In fact, if you want to play with it, that'd be, you know, we can it do.

It sometime. Anytime you want. That's pretty cool. I'll. I'll get a hold of you later. We'll. We'll figure something out. Maybe for. Yeah, I mean, I'll tell you what I know. Router late, I think is ideal for like, so it doesn't black hole stuff, you know, like there's a, like there's a way where they know they can collide the traffic and so router late. Wait, and then if it doesn't hear anyone retransmit, it retransmits the data, I think. But I mean, putting in clients, what typically what everyone does, unless they have like a really high up node like, you know, on the Sutter Buttes or something like that.

So what do you know about the. And I have an Android, by the way. What do you know about the whole map function? It's like on the Android, it's like the third. It's the middle thing that you can press or touch and I mean, it doesn't really look like a map to me, kind of, but maybe it is a folded map or something. I don't know. But every time I select on that, I mean, I'm lucky to see anything. Maybe I see my own nodes or something like that, but that's all I ever see. Yeah, they'll start populating over time. How long have you been running this for? Is that usually if you go on the discord that I sent you, like, they have all the settings that people say are optimum, so they. One of the settings is don't up your. Don't update your location for, you know, only every 12 hours or something like that. Because that way it doesn't flood the mesh with a bunch of, like, you know, every five minutes, especially if you're not a moving node, like, if it's a fixed location.

Then it's better to set that for, like, 12 hours. And that's why in the node list, you'll see people popping in or nodes popping in, but you won't see them on the map because their location won't be sent for, like, several hours. And so it'll start populating slowly. But, like, on the map now, I just switched over and I got like, 15 nodes or so because I'm in a more populated area, I think, Well, how about just when you hit scan, like, there's a little looking glass, and then a scan that would be like, if you press the far right lower button and that populates your Bluetooth network or serial.

You know your connection, I guess. And hit scan. Does that do anything, or is that only scanning for your own devices? Yeah, that's only scanning for your devices. So has nothing to do with the mesh other than looking for Bluetooth devices, actually. Okay. Yeah, so keep doing that. Just hoping that something else pops up. Matoke. Yeah. How long has it been running? Because usually after 24 hours, you'll get, like, a way more nodes. It takes, like, time for them to populate in.

So, another thing, if you can tell me, like, what the last messages you've seen in the chat, I can look in the logger and see, you know, what nodes those came through. Might help figure it out. Yeah, I'm still trying to figure it all out myself, but, yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I'm switching my notes, babe. This is. It gets confusing, actually. And, you know, having three notes, it doesn't make sense. I probably need to just turn a couple of them off. I don't even know if I'm talking through the one that's on my roof right now. I guess not. I don't know, I thought if I had them all linked together, they should just be all repeating each other, right?

Yeah. You might have better luck if you can connect to the roof node directly via Bluetooth then. And turn the other ones off. That's a good test, actually, because there's this phenomenon called black holing, where, like, you know, you could actually hit the node in your, you know, in your house, and then that takes one hop and then another one in the house, and then finally gets to the root node. That's the third hop. And then on its way out, it hits, like, whatever your hop limit you know, set to. It'll use up all the hops before it makes it all the way over to Folsom or whatever. So it's for. As a test, if you can connect it with. Via Bluetooth, that's probably direct. And turn the others off. Might be a good idea.

Well, I have to figure out how to turn them off. Yeah. Did you see the most recent? Probably not. I'm thinking K8MRD, and there's been a couple others that showed these new from Meshnology nodes. They're Hellcat. I think they're Hellcat Version Fours. It looked kind of like a little mini ht. Really? I bought a couple of those. They were, well, roughly 45 bucks a piece, and put them together, so playing with that, and then the other one's an old T beam, so. But figuring out just how to turn them on and off is hard enough tonight. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. It's not intuitive. And I had the hell of a time just linking these things over Bluetooth, which. Which is causing me grief. But the note I got now is the Raspberry PI hat.

It's a 1 watt module and it's sitting on. It's in a box way up in a mast in this tree. And it's running in one of those cavity filters, too, because the front end of these things aren't very good, but it seems to be doing okay. What's the name of that node you were saying you got that looks like a ht. Well, inside it's that Hellcat V4, I think is what that is. But Meshnology is the company they sell on Amazon anyway. Yep. This one is. The little short Name now is NDE2 for node 2 November Delta Echo 2. That's the short name anyway.

Okay, cool. Let me see if I can look that up real quick. Yep, I'm connected to it by Bluetooth. And it shows 19 online nodes, 28 total, and echo Bravo. Let me think here. I'm getting all messed up. It's getting late. Anyway, Ebyt is one of them, you know. That's what you sent me. And it shows. Hops away. It shows question mark. All right, cool. That's. That's my node, man. You can try and send a direct message to it if you see it in the list. If you click on it, go in the sub menu, there's a direct message.

Yeah, I did that, and I did it a couple times already. I'll try it again. That set it out and gives me a check mark. That's all it does. Okay. Nothing yet. Shoot. The fact that you can see it, though, there's hope. Yep. And then what comes up is, you know, when I type the message in and it shows my other node, so it's like, it's definitely getting hurt by my other node, the home node, so.

You know, I just have to wonder if I'm doing any more than that. Maybe I should shut that one off. Yeah, I would definitely shut off the other node, just as a test, because they eat up your hop. Also, what's your hop limit set to K and I6SSI. I think I went in there and changed them all to five. I could double check it, but I moved it from three to five.

Well, so far all I can do is reboot the device. I haven't figured out how to turn them off. This one you can take a battery out of, I guess, but. Really didn't want to have to do that. Okay, maybe that worked. I hit one button, long press and the screen went out. So Maybe that worked. KN6MGK. All right. It's funny. I just sent a bunch of test messages to kg6mtw. I didn't read it carefully. I thought it was you.

Well, I can see that one, by the way. KG6MDW roof, G2 ending node ending in 116C. I believe that's the one that you sent test messages to. Yep, that's the one. That's Trevor. Where is that guy? He's in Fairfield, I think. Yeah, Fairfield. Yeah. That one comes up and it says it's two hops away. Yeah, we should be able to send messages. I don't know. Maybe. We have to wait a bit. See? Trying to think what else we could do. You got the other.

One shut off. Well, do I need to unpair it or something, too? It's saying not connected, but it's. I don't know. Doesn't seem like it's blinking now at least. But yeah, hard to say. I'll try to connect to it, maybe see if that. See if that does it. Okay. Yeah. If you can't connect, then it's probably powered off. That's what you want. I mean, even though you're not connected to it. It's part of the mesh network, right on the lower side, so it needs to be powered off. Also, you could set your. Temporarily set your hop count to seven and then see how that works out. You could always lower it back.

Yeah, they make these things so complex. Like to figure that out. Like now we're to figure out where the, the hop count thing would be. I don't know. Let's see. Maybe some device or users. I don't know. I think it's in the Lora setting, if I'm not mistaken. Let me. Yep, there it is. Yeah, I'll put to seven. How about the whole thing about. Okay, the MQTT and ignore mqtt. What about that? Yeah, that's only if you're set up an mqtt, you know, connection. Basically your node is connected to. To the network and that's mine set up that way. So what happens is when it sees packets, it forwards them to the MQTT server.

That's a Bay Area mesh, and then that gets put in the logger so we can see what's what. My node's actually receiving. But you don't have a network connection set up, so you don't need to mess with it right now. You might want to try it later, though. Yeah, I don't mind being seen if that's all it is. I mean, I'm a vendor. FCC license ham. I'm seeing everywhere already. Yeah, no, but you have to. You'll have to connect your node to your WI FI network, and then from there you'll have to set up mqtt. And there's a few things in there that I can get the details for you. I forgot what they are. But there's a certain path you have to set up so that it goes to the right lock.

Once you get the hop setting up to 7 again, you can try and send me a couple, like, tests, direct. Like three in a row or something like that, and we'll see if it make it.

Yeah. It's funny, because I think everything I'm seeing is only being seen through one that's not connected to the roof. I don't understand that, because now. Now that I've shut these other two off, that I can. Because the other one's on the roof right now. Yeah. All I'm seeing is when I tap the nodes is my own. My. My own three. That's. So. I don't quite follow. You shut off all the other nodes except the roof node, Right. You're connected to that? Yeah, it's kind of what it appears to be. I can connect it to that. And I'll try again to connect to the others now that I think I've shut them off. Interesting.

Yeah. See this one that's inside my house right now. It's a little tiny antenna. That one shows all the. All the nodes that we're talking about here. And I don't know, I can't seem to shut it off, but I put it to sleep. I don't know. Why don't they just have an on off? I'm going to take it all apart and put an on off button where I disconnect where the battery is. That'll solve it. That's funny you say that. I. When I built my heltech one, 3D printed them, I put a switch. They had a switch spot in there. And I put a switch in to disconnect it from the battery because it was like a. It was a pain in the butt, man. The battery would drain even though it was off. Hey. Well, the good news is this time when I hit the other. The top button and I long pressed it, it said shutting off. But you know, you can hardly see these screens too, by the way. They don't make them for. I mean, should be able to shut it off.

Off right from your phone if you're going to use the phone app. Yeah, that'd be a nice U track. So, yeah, I can't read the screen at all, but otherwise it's, like, ridiculously small.

Okay, so can you explain to me, like, where it says, now I'm on Bluetooth connected, and it tells me, negative 76 DBM. So now it says 0 DBM, and it's green. So does that mean, like, the Bluetooth, what it's hearing? It's not any other signal. But that's the Bluetooth. That I don't know. Actually, I'm connected to mine over ip, trying to remember. Let me look at the screen real quick. Yeah, I think it's funny because, like, I say, that one, this one here, that's on the roof here, it acts like the only thing it hears is. Or whatever it's listed, even. Even though they're turned off right now are the other nodes. I have.

Yeah. What happens is it caches each. Each node will cache the node list on it. So if you come back later, the node list will be populated with that node. You know, it's list. It hangs on to them unless you clear the node database. So basically, the node list is not real time. It kind of collects them over time and saves them in its database. Ki6 Enterprise. Okay, well, so how would it be that the. Like the one that's on the roof with the disco and antenna. That's what I'm assuming was hearing all these stations, or at least being able to see them somehow. And you know, now that I'm supposedly connected to that one, it's not showing those other nodes at all, but those.

These other two here are just inside my house with little 2 inch stubby antennas, you know. And so one of those nodes is able to pick up all the others. Yeah, that would be kind of surprising if that's the case. But if you. If that node doesn't see anything, then. Yeah, that's interesting. I don't know. Okay, you said discone antenna. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, just go, you know, just going with a transmit on it. Tram. I think it's a tram. I don't know. 14:11. I think it is. Anyway. Yep. It's like the whole map thing. So the map thing again is like, you know, the map thing. It doesn't show nothing but my own notes, like you say, maybe that was from yesterday or whenever. Yeah, that's interesting. I don't know.

Yeah, I just find it funny. I turned on my. The other. The Lora T. Beam again. That's what I. That's my house one. And yeah, it shows all these nodes, including yours. Interesting. Yeah, I'll try to send you a couple more messages. I don't know enough to try for tonight. All right, cool. Yeah, I sent another one straight to the know. Everybody does test the chico just now and shows it went to the Sutter and everything, so I don't know if you see it.

So one thing we can try, I can try and set up tomorrow is set up a private channel so we don't bug anybody. But, you know, we're using this. Basically, we set up the channel, use the same medium fast network, but everyone else doesn't see all the chatter. And I can send like a, like a cron job where it pings you like every 30 minutes and then we can see if you get any of these packets over time.

Yeah, See, now It says only 5 of 15 are online, but. Yeah, it still shows all the list of whole bunch of nodes. So you're saying that. You know, I would have thought that some of these would drop off or something like that, but that doesn't happen, huh? No, they just stay in there. I think once you reach your node limit, the oldest drops off maybe, I think not 100% on that. Yeah, I just kind of feel like that my nodes seem to be talking to each other. That seems to be about it right now. Can't seem to utilize any of these other ones that are listed here. Yeah, it's kind of cool that you picked up all those other ones. At least you're receiving them. That's a good step. The other thing, too, is my node is running like one watt.

Just. I had another one. One of those station G2s that are 2 watts. I just sold it to another guy that's using it for mesh core in the area. But. Yeah, I don't know, man. We just have to keep trying. This guy that I sold this other device to.

He's working with mesh corn. He says it's way more reliable, or at least he's hoping it is. And he's working on it. So if that pans out, maybe I'll switch over. I don't know. Yeah, well, I don't understand. It is. It seems like it should be easier. Like, when. Like that. Not a Rubicon guy. You know, they've all spent these couple hundred dollars for these particular noses. They just wanted to work out of the box, put them up and be done with it. Not all this finicky stuff. And that's why people don't like these kind of things. They're too finicky. Right? Exactly. Like, the note I'm on now is a raspberry PI with a hat. And then there's a cavity filter like you see in, like, a repeater. Super, you know, low loss, like a non.

Filter type thing. And then, you know, the antenna and everything. It's like a major ordeal. And then it maybe I was thinking, okay, I'll put one in the car. But I'm from down in Folsom. I can't even communicate with my own nose. So it's, like, totally lame. I thought that was funny. As I was sitting here, it said, you know, I heard yours. Something go off, and mine went off. And it says, from 1 2e8 meth tastastic. 1 2e8 2 hops to Marin. That's funny, right? It's like you can get into Marin, but you can't get across the. The same town or whatever.

It's kind of finicky like that. Like I was able to trace route nodes in all the way to San Jose, but I couldn't get a reliable message. It's totally random. Well, maybe you're more familiar with this. I don't understand it because it seems like someone would have had to write that two hops to Marin. I don't think that'd be an automatic thing. But I don't know the same thing. Like when I wrote, and this is just on the medium fast, I wrote testipeat and testing, testing, 1, 2, 3. And, you know, I don't know, it's weird. And this one came in and says two hops to Marin. It didn't, it didn't, you know, hops away. It says five hops. So anyway, I don't get it. Yeah, that's definitely from someone else. I got the exact same message.

Okay, well, that's some confirmation then. You're. You got the same message. So that means that someone wrote that to hops to marin business. Yep. Someone wrote it, but I don't know who it's directed to. Is it to me? Are they telling me I'm too obstacle marin or what? I have no idea. Okay. Yeah, that's. That's why. No use. Oh, something else just came in. Let's see what that is. I don't know. Maybe it's not like radio. Oh, no. It's from five six. A five new node. Will it mesh? That's seven hops away. It's kind of like Frankenstein, like Dead Bug style, because I did it on a perf board and all that stuff, but it works. So what's special about that? Because it sounds like it's something that you have to build. I do have a 5.4B sitting here.

Yeah. So it attaches to the PI and then through sdi, I guess. And then you run the software on the PI and that's the nice thing. Well the shield that goes on there, the little ebike module I have is a 1 watt module so you get, you know, better power and it, it's like a Heltech but more powerful. But the nice thing about running it on the PI too is you can connect on the network. So basically on my phone, anywhere I go where I'm on my WI Fi on my network I just connect over ip. It seems way more stable. What happens if there's no Internet? I mean that's the whole point of this, right? Yeah, no, when I say it's local Internet, basically the Raspberry PI is on my WI Fi and my phone's on the WI Fi. And so instead of using Bluetooth, which isn't that big of a range, the PI.

Is talking to my meshtastic on my phone through WI fi. So if the Internet goes down, it doesn't matter as long as my WI fi is working. Yeah. I have to have a guy like you explain that all to me because, you know, EMP or something like that. I mean, your WI fi won't be working. Right. But neither will the Bluetooth either. Right. If it takes out your WI fi, it's going to take out all your other electronics. Well, I don't know. Can 6 MGK? Part of what all that's about seems to me like, is that some stuff will be taken out, some stuff won't be. But major infrastructure, you know, maybe we'll have some. Lots of issues, you know, so things will be down. So maybe you can get your own stuff working because you're pretty.

Bright person, but I couldn't. So who you talk to? Yeah, yeah, that's true. Point. I mean, that's when you get back on the repeater. I guess. If it's still working. I don't know. Been trying to do a lot more cw, trying to learn that some more. Got the other day I set up real quick at a park and I got Russia and France right away. Then it took me about another half hour, 40 minutes to get eight more contacts. Just all around. All around, you know, say California, Arizona. I did get one in Nebraska. You know, I have a lot of fun with that, but I find it funny that nobody in.

America listens. I can get Russia and France. Yeah, that's cool. And you did that on CW? Yeah, on CW yeah. Must have just been propagation that day on 20 meters. I don't know. I was getting local people and I was skipping over all the United States and getting right into Europe now. That's very cool. Yeah, I gotta get on hf more. I haven't been on in a while. Conditions are up and down. They've been pretty good occasionally I've been fine. They're good, you know most of the time lately. Yeah this magnetic storm one day we had those magnetic storms for about two days in a row. Those days were bad. But yeah, with CW or FT8 I can get get out quite a bit GSA there's just not enough people on it. I mean I get on there occasionally and try.

But see what's out there. But you know just like Mike and Redding and stuff like that and a few in San Diego and stuff you can be heard but nobody's really sitting at their station. You know they're just all going on automatic replies and stuff and so I'm not really you know with FT8 it's not my favorite thing it's washing paint dry sometimes but at least for the most part many people are sitting at their stations and responding to you and it and it's quick so I can get you know those parts on the air activations pretty fast. Yeah that's pretty cool. Yeah I like SSBs like well just because I don't know CW but GSA mostly is kind of like a utility mode to me. I mean it's super reliable for sending you know, aprs messages and stuff like that but yeah, for chat and stuff or regular contact it's kind of dead.

Yeah, that's what I've been finding anyway. But cw, when it's hot. Like, there's a friend of mine over here who goes out to one of the same parks I go to, and he can be there for a couple hours and knock out 133 contacts on parks on the air activation in just a couple hours. That guy is good. Wow. Yeah. That's a lot. That's pretty cool, man. Yeah, occasionally I get Mike sends me messages, and I'll send him a message back on JS8. So it's kind of like a leave a message for me email type thing. Yeah, yeah, I know he does. Yeah, I've done that with him a couple times, too, but lately, not really. In order to learn cw, just deal.

Gotta use it every day. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if I can learn it. Plus, I don't know if I have time right now. Maybe when I retire, if I ever can. Yeah. I have a hard time with people saying they don't have time. I don't know. I try to stay busy every day of the week. Pretty much Sundays I kind of relax a little bit, don't work as hard, but I've actually not worked some parts of Saturday and I end up working Sunday instead or something. But otherwise I get like maybe six hours of sleep a night. The rest of the time I got other things to do. I don't like sleeping. Who cares about sleeping? Yeah. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. And I could probably carve out the time. I'm probably making excuses. It's intimidating, I guess. I don't know. But yeah, the other thing I set up too, if I saying I don't have time.

Is I set up Arden A R E D N that basically ham radio, wireless networking type thing. Have you heard of that? Well I've heard words like that. We see there's all kinds of rabbit holes, people go down just like Windlink. I haven't done that yet. Something I have on my list to do, I got maybe oh what do we have now? I really want to get it done before the end of the year but I also want to get about 10 more parks on the air activation so I got a lot of stuff to be doing radio wise. Yeah, true, there's a lot of things that take your time but yeah, fun stuff though but yeah, I don't know man. But basically it's like a blanket. But it's kind of like a sleeping bag. It's filled with feathers, so it's got like goose down or whatever. They're probably like 2 inches or an inch and a half thick. And it's like a blanket. But, man, with those things, you never get cold. They're really good in the summertime. You kind of have to just throw them off, but I highly recommend them.

Yeah. So what's that for your whole body? Yeah. Or is it just your feet? And I'd have a hard time wearing that as I'm walking down the street. No, man, it's just for sleep, man. It's for your whole body. Well. Well, I have a wife and you have a wife. You're supposed to like, what do you call that? Cuddle up to her. That's what I'd be doing. That's how you get warmed up. Anyway, after 28 years of marriage. Here I need my electric blanket. Same here. I need my woody goose down or whatever. The wife's always got like a barrier pillow between us. Yep, yep, that's right. Talking about how old country is going down and you know, all this stuff. And yeah, granted, there's a lot of crazy stuff that guy was doing for sure. Plus he was half dead all the time. So anyway, what I'm trying to say is that there's two sides to everything. And yeah, we could all have all this open desire that America is really thinking like they're going to keep Republicans and conservatives more in power over the next 12 years or whatever. But you know, the alternate is also possible and that is that people get disgusted or whatever with whatever they perceive as a high price. Like we said egg prices were terrible. Well, right now they're saying turkey prices are terrible and so on anyway. I mean, there's this whole affordability mantra now. But I just don't want you to forget that. Remember what they did to Trump last time and they could do it all.

So how the economy is in about a year from now or a little bit less, is going to determine probably how the vote goes in the midterms. But it would be a little too obvious for him to pull it off on this next election. And I'm pretty sure Trumpet jump in there with a executive order that still they are working on it. Meshtastic update on that. Bought a couple unknowns. I mentioned that to Jay before, anyway, and put them together. And recently, yesterday I put one up on my roof finally and been getting a lot more traffic now. And so I had to use a different channel. It's called medium fast. Anyway, what's the channel of these nodes? And right now, as I look at it, using that outside antenna, I think it's the same antenna. Jay might have one of those discode antennas like a tram 1411. Anyway, I have that attached to the node and right now I've got It's showing me 21 of 110 nodes. It's seeing. Some of these are pretty interesting, like the Sutter buttes showing up.

Actually probably eat turkey over there and then just come to our house to have pumpkin pie or something later in the afternoon. My Xyl is up in Bishop with our son right now. He's 13. He's hanging out with his cousin and she's up there with her parents. So she'll be driving home tomorrow morning, bringing her cousin back here. Her cousin lives in Bellingham and he's here with his three year old. So my wife's driving them back down over the path and everything tomorrow morning early. He's catching a flight at 3 o', clock. If you already have a feed line coming in with that, with that disc going on it, you can just make a quick adapter on to one of these, like, Heltech v4 nodes, probably cost you like, you know, less than 40 bucks. And plug it in on medium fast channel, and you'd have it up and running real quick. I'm thinking that's the way to do it. You know, you use your phone app to talk through the node or chat through the node anyway. So it's something that Moreham seems to get involved with, especially radio clubs and things like that. So, like, that one is the North Hills Radio Club out of Polson. That's listed. And the other one, the one from Mount Diablo, the club that's up there, I guess.

The dry ingredients you cut it in. So maybe that might be the hardest thing. So I've never done that before, but it doesn't sound too hard. So I'm going to try it, try my hand at it, and then try to make a homemade buttermilk biscuit tomorrow. So wish me luck. Anyway, yeah, I support having hay. That's used for, you know, maybe emergency communications when Internet's down and. And no other way of chatting with people. You've already preset up these mesh networks, hundreds of nodes that all hop from one to the other, you know, and you can send essentially text messages all around. And you don't have to be a ham. So they have, on its basic setting, you can do the encrypt encryption. Now they are, they do have some that are, that are HAM specific, and they put out more power, like these little things here.

Put out like, you know, I don't know, 50, 50 milliwatts or something like that. You know, they're based on the Lora long range stuff. So interesting. So think about like, let's say if you and John both had nodes up there and you know, you could be encrypted, sending text back and forth, you know, and then other people like Paul up there and stuff all had nodes and so forth, they all mesh together and they can hop from one to the other to the other to the other and make it all the way into, you know, like I said, I've seen Fairfield and so forth. So some of them are up high. You guys that have elevation are sometimes in prime categories, you know, depending on your spot there. But you get a node up in the air and you can possibly have a good line of the side of the valley and stuff. Who knows what can happen.

No, it's on 915 megahertz. So no, it's not a 2 meter node. Then you'd have to be a ham, I think. So that's why in the US they use. I think it's like 906.75 or something like that. But yeah, I have to show it to you sometime. But I need to get it working and try to make some comms with some people I know and so forth. So I'm just in testing phases. I did this a couple years ago when nobody was really that interested in it. And now it looks like a lot more clubs and things have been getting involved with it. I could send you some videos. I think I've sent them before though, you know, like KB9DBR. I think you follow Michael Martins. He's got one recently he did on meshtastics.

So does Cade, MRD and heavier crash course, so forth. Anyway, they like to carry them around when they go to like the habitats and things into the different campouts and so forth. And probably people at Quartzsite have them and stuff too, I'm sure. Anyway, you know, it's just a little finicky project kind of thing. Not everyone's cup of tea. If you like to hear people voices, you know, then it's probably not your thing, you know, it's more like a digital mode or something. I think it might actually be kind of up your alley in some ways but you know, because we don't like to talk on the microphones while we can text one another. Right. Anyway. And yeah, you don't. It doesn't have to be just ham radio people. It can be, it can be anybody that. You don't have to have a ham license to operate these little things.

All right, well, let's see. Someone was telling me it sounds like doo doo, so, like, it gets garbled and stuff like that. I don't remember who that was now, so I don't know. I haven't messed around with it yet. So what band are you using on it? Okay, so. So you do 40 meters and then with whom can you speak?

Okay. Yeah, so it sounds interesting, you know, but just even integrating my computer into my radio system, I think that's a stopping point for a lot of people, at least for me. I mean, here at the house I've never really had a computer, had my Raspberry PI for a long time plugged in that way, but it wouldn't do that kind of thing. It doesn't have any video or microphone or anything like that coming out of that. So, so then now I have to have a regular desktop device or something like that and I have one right here in front of me that's Linux. And here again, you know, all the stuff for audio never seems to work just right for, for that. So I guess, you know, one would have to go out and use buy a Windows specific machine usually to make all this stuff work. And that's something I don't want to do.

So. And I don't want to spend the time, you know, necessary to go through all the terminal node stuff with Linux to make to discover what audio outputs to be using and so forth that it seems to require, because it's not plug and play can 6 MGK.

Well, that's fine. That just gets the software running. That's the easy part. Getting the software on is easy. Having your computer though, do the encoding, decoding from the radio and using the right inputs and outputs, setting it up, that's the part that is hard. You don't get a whole lot of people videos showing you exactly how to get things running on, say, all the various Linux operating systems out there. It's not like there's just one like say Windows 10 or Windows 11, you know, Linux, there's literally hundreds of operating systems and they all are a little bit different. So that's probably why they don't do. People don't specialize in videos on it, you know, you wish they would like km4ack. He likes Linux Mint. Well, I like Linux Mint. I can put that on. So why don't he do a video.

On it, showing how he sets up FreeDV, for instance, on Linux Mint. But he doesn't. So, yeah, so until someone does that's smarter than me, more intelligent on all using Terminal mode, which is like, you know, the backside of a computer system, you know, it's going to be difficult for Linux users to do some of that stuff.

Yeah, I've been going back and forth between HF and here and an occasional hallway visit. So sorry about not participating fully. Well, look at distrowatch J, which is the main page that Linux users go to to see like most popular, the newest information on distribution releases and so forth. On Linux anyway, number one is called catchy OS with 4445 hits per day. I have to check that one out because I have not. But Mint Linux mint is number two. 2,573. Anyway, they list the top 100 distributions. Of course Ubuntu is number nine. POP OS and Zorin have both come in pretty high.

Which they're right up there with, because of the Windows stuff going on right now. People, they've designed those two systems, those two operating systems around, like, what Windows 10 look like and so forth, so that people can move over fairly seamlessly. So anyway, I'd have to look down at ways to find Raspbian, I think. I haven't found it so far, but it's not the most popular.

Yeah. Well, that's Raspberry PI. So that's the operating system designed all around the Raspberry PI. And generally, you put another operating system on first, like Debian, and then the Raspbian layer goes on top of that. So I bet you there's something else there first before Raspbian goes on.

Yeah, AI says yeah, because I use Raspian. But it says it's a Linux based operating system, specifically operate optimized for Raspberry PI. It's a version of Debian Linux. That's what I thought. Yeah. So anyway. But yeah, they've changed that over the years to make it a lot easier to get installed and stuff. But yeah, before you used to have to put. I know you used to have to put Debian on first before he could slide the Raspbian OS in there. Yeah, things have definitely gotten better over the years with Linux. Make things a lot more simple.

Some of these rad cells can actually transmit on cb, but. But I think it's fm what they're transmitting on. I don't know, AM or fm. Yeah, well, yeah, I just heard you in there. And by the way, have a happy Thanksgiving there. If I forget, which I will, I know I will. But yeah, I just heard you in there and I was noticing. I think it's on frequency 160. It was. It's like you didn't want anybody to talk you in the foot. Well, their rationale is for emergencies and et cetera, et cetera. There's a little bit of that going on. GMRs, like locally, there's Thunder Buttes, and there's also a good machine in Orville. And, you know, you can get on and say hi to your buddies or whatever, but they will tell you to keep it short, go away. Interesting. Well, some of those machines were put up by people that want to use it pretty much for the locals. So, yeah, there's one good one up on Oregon Peak, too.

You didn't know that? No, I don't know that. I. I do have a beam. It's a 440 beam, but I'm using it on GMRS. There are a lot of hams out there, you know? Doug. This is Doug on Nimshu Ridge. Channel 34, 62725. Don't ask me to pl there is one, over. Oh, I've got all that information. There's a group, nvtmrs, North Valley gmrs, and they put repeaters all around the upper valley here. There's, I don't know, a dozen of them. And if you get onto Facebook and you join, if you have a GMRS license and you join the NVDMRS Facebook group, then they'll provide you all the information about all of these different repeaters. You know, I belong to a GMRS group on Facebook, but I noticed that what they do is they.

They talk about how hands are rude to them, how hams talk down to them, how hams make their lives miserable. That must be, let's see, not a Rubicon or something like that. And I kind of get it, you know, because there are a lot of hands out there that, you know, think that GMRS is a lower form of life as far as radio is concerned. I can see that. Or that, you know, they might just need some advice about something, you know, but apparently it's their attitude. I noticed that in ham radio, the extra class hams seem to have a bigger halo.
