M7t, indy, M7tnb, m7khj. Hey, good afternoon, Rick. How are you? Hey, pretty good. Been meaning to get a hold of you. Have you been to Potosi recently, or do you like have any idea how much snow is presently up there? The last I got was 18 inches of snow at the broadcast site, but that was a couple of weeks ago and there's been a lot. There's been a lot of melt off. Checking our cameras at our site, it looks like there's not a lot. So I'm going to try to run up there Friday and get the six eight, eight repeater back on here. Yeah, copy that. Okay. Yeah, we have some.
Work to do up there and we're right over by the broadcast site. So yeah, this week might be good and I think we're supposed to have what decent weather about so about a week from now I think so I think there's a storm front moving midweek next week. So yeah, so this is kind of probably the sweet spot. You know this 70 degree weather we've been having. And my only concern is that that one back area on the perump side that gets those. Gets those big drifts because I get such little sunlight in the wintertime. That's the one area I'm worried about. But I'm gonna pack a shovel in case it's just a little bit of a drift I can get through. But we'll see. I'm hoping, yeah, we might try to get up there. We were gonna go today and then we were rerouted. Went out to Glendale, Beacon Hill and man it was like summertime out there. Well, if you go before Friday, give me a call.
Let me know what you see, and if I go Friday, and I'll. I'll let you know. How's that? Yeah, will do. Okay. Well, thank you, sir. I do appreciate it. M7J Las Vegas. Okay, Rick. Have a good one. N7T Andy.

Hey, john. How's it going up there? If you're up there, n6prt. Yeah.kn6sln yeah. You scared me. It was kind of like a ghost back there in the background. What are you up to, Martin? Oh, I. I don't have any ghosts in the room right now. My dog didn't even whine. What's going on? Ah, nothing. Just up here watching the news and getting ready to listen to the. They call themselves the 3808 crowd on HF. Well, I did find that tuner that I used in the car, and it's still only $50. I can't believe it.
It's an auto tuner, almost exactly like the one I use in the shack here, except that it's tiny and has fewer toroids in it, but it could be used for an 891. And it's automatic, so it's pretty cool, I guess, that. That the AC you've got is automatic, but it only goes. You think it only goes from three to one, which is kind of shocking. Yeah, it's pretty much fully automatic. And yes, it only goes three to one, but that's all right. You just get your antenna business three to one. And it's solid, you know, up down to Opal zero, or one to one, as you call them. Well, there's so many bands out there. If you start.
Using all of them. Someday try and do it with one or two or maybe even three antennas. There's like eight bands out there. So yeah, you end up with need for an antenna tuner. That'll do a little more for you. That's why I like these auto tuner. That's why I got one. In the particular type of auto tuner I got in the for the truck, They do take a carrier at about 10 watts, but other than that's all there is to it. They're not think the same thing the Ya3 is going to do. It's just that they can tune. Occasionally you might find a situation where you need about an 8 to 1 tune. An 8 to 1 antenna down to 1 to 1. And that's what they do. Yeah, yeah. Like I said. Well, I've already got this one. I'm.
Good what it is. And yeah, I'll just keep in the intense way. They have these. I'm sure you've seen them on the Internet. They have these deals where they're Bluetooth, the antenna switch. You shoot up five antennas and you put it up on the pole and run one coax all the way down the pole or tree or whatever you're lining up in. And it's Bluetooth from your shack. And you can tune it wirelessly. Well, the type of thing that I do where I would need. In fact, I'm doing it right now. Where I need more than one antenna to be able to make it into the same box is I have, for instance, I have a two.
Antennas up. Right now I have a. That big. They call it a sky loop. It's a big wire antenna way up in there. Up. Generally, most of the time it's up above 75ft, but right now it's got one leg that's down to about 15ft. But anyway, it still works with my tuner. It still was. The tuner says, oh, that's different now. Okay. And it was okay for all the bands that. That's 160 through 10 meters. So that means I've got 160, 160, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15 and 10. So that's.
Six bands, seven bands. I don't know. Hard to count. I was counting on. So, yeah, that. Those are all the different bands that I need to go to. Yeah, yeah, I get you. Yeah. Well, you know, like I said, I've only known that try to fix up 20 days. I don't know when, but the most I have up there is 80, 40, 20, and 10. Well, my 10 meter antenna, I've tried to explain what it is. It's just such a simple antenna. And right now, that's the only other antenna I'm running. And I just turned it on. Right now I have a little button on my antenna tuner and it says, go to.
Go to antenna number two. So all I have to do now is tune the 10 meters. And tune it kind of quickly because I don't have it completely set up right, but it tunes real quick. Yeah, it's not right just yet, but it's a pretty cool antenna. And it works better than my big ant, my big. Better than my big antenna for 10 meters. And all it is, is a fairly short piece of wire, you know, 15 or 20ft long, hanging from a tree.
With piece of coast connected to it. That's it. That's the whole thing. And it picks up more European stations than my big engine. Yeah, yeah. The 10 meters, not very long. I thought it'd be longer than it was, but it's not very long. 20 meters, really not that long. But when you get up around 40 and 80, they get some lights on. But, yeah, we'll see what happens. Yeah, Yeah. I really recommend this antenna. But see, the whole point of bringing up that little antenna is it takes a separate piece of coax and it's going in a totally different direction. And connection is. I can reach out and touch the connection at the bottom because the antenna actually has a chunk of coax on it.
Too. So the connection is made at ground level with a little tape on it. And. Yeah, it's connected right now and working. And when the bands are in, I can reach it, you know, out all over the world. I'd like to see that DX contest get going and try it with that. A DX contest that runs all over the world on 10 meters. So when they have a DX contest like that, then a whole lot of people are on 10 meters and you're gonna actually hear some connection. Yeah, I think that's like Steve was talking about. That's on the 13th, I believe he said, I think I will be all the.
I think we're probably down in Red Bluff, but we'll be in the rv. Well, if you had your 891 with you and you had one of those. See, there's this one kind of antenna that I think is pretty much up. It was because Steve told me about it, I think. But what it is is this part of it is, is a whip. And you get these parts and kind of screw them together. You just get these parts and screw them together real simple. Or you can buy a kit. I just got the part and mine has a 40 meter coil. I don't think he doing that yet. He's running one that goes from 20 meters up to.
10 meters or maybe even 6 meters. So go 20, 17, 15, and 10. Four bands. And I think. I think you can get that whip that we're talking about for about 20 bucks. You pay about $7 for this other thing. The coil is a little more expensive, but if you use the coil, then you got 40 meters, but you just poke it into the ground, run, coax into the radio, and you're on the earth. Yeah, that sounds like that Hustler. Is it that holster you're talking about? No, but it's very similar, except that it only takes. It's only one device where the Hustler has, you know, in order to work all the bands, you got to have.
A device, a device that has a special coil for each fan. And you have to pay a lot of money for that coil. With this one, you only have one coil for 40, and no coils for anything else. See, so you're talking way, way less money, you know, like, and even, even the whole thing costs. I think you could probably get some set up for my. Maybe third. Between 30 and $50 for everything. And a hustler, one hustler coil is gonna cost that much for just one band. So, see, that's. That's where the difference is. And he's got it because it's really quick to set up and be on 20 meters or 10 meters or 15 in just a few minutes, while he's sitting at a picnic cable, he just pokes it into the ground and throws a few wires out, and he's on the air.
Okay. You're talking about. Oh, I don't know the name of the antenna, but it's a long whip. Yeah, well, this Hustler I've already got. I've already got it set up for 80 meters. It only cost me 20 bucks. Now, if I wanted to go get a 40 meter coil, I think it's something like 60. And you're right, they're pretty, pretty pricey. But like I said, I'm gonna wait for the ham fest down there. At Foresight and Love, those guys are letting me get rid of stuff like that. Well, see, Steve started out with one that was a lot more money, and I don't think it does too much more. It's something like a challenge or something like that. And it was like, I don't know.
50 bucks, maybe, I don't know, $300, $200. I don't have a lot more money. And I think it might have figured out a way to have some of the different bands. But I can tell you for sure that this whip I'm talking about, which, when it collapses collapsible. So when it collapses down, it's about maybe a foot and a half long, and it pulls out. And it pulls out to about 17ft. And so, you know, you can set it to whatever length you need for whatever van you want to operate on. That makes it really cool. Yeah, yeah. I've seen different ones like that. I've also seen that guy, was it DX Commander? He actually sells themselves.
Hro. I guess he sells them to HAM either. And some of those antennas will do. I, I'm not sure if it'll do 160, but it'll do 80, 40, 20, 10, 15, I believe it is. And then some more. I, I think there's like there and the antenna itself is, you know, anywhere from, like, what is it, 2 to 1 or 2.5 to 1. And I think the 8 meters length of 1 to 1 before you even use it to.
The problem that I'm trying, the thing I'm trying to beat is the cost. And the cost of that that antenna is not too bad. It's $119. Of course, it's in where you can get it from. I guess you could get it from some US Companies. I don't know what it costs from US Companies. But now that particular one. Okay. He's using a telescopic mask, too. Okay. I didn't know. The one I use is. Five. Is 5.6 meters. His telescoping mass is nine meters, so, yeah.
I'm pretty impressed with that. Yeah, that's another way to go. Yeah, there's some antennas out there. Believe me. I've. I've spent hours researching antennas, how to make them, and the ones that are already built, stuff I got, I. I seen some of them. Of course, these are 80 and 40. That's only too bad. As low as 89 bucks. And they're something like 22ft long or something like that. Well, that one, that's one part of the antenna that he felt. It's a replacement part for $119.
Not the actual antenna. So let's just see what the actual antenna cost. Yeah, Might take me a few minutes to find the right one. What, the telescoping math? Yeah. Now I'm just scrolling off my memory, and my memory ain't that good, so I'm not looking it up on the Internet or nothing like that, but I think the lowest one I found was like 89 bucks. And then you go on up there to stuff like I'm venturing to, say, anywhere from 550 down, you know, and some of them, you need radios and 70,000. Well, the antenna that I.
Talking about runs all the m. All the band. Well, the antenna that, that runs on that telescopic master I just told you about for $119 for the part. That antenna totally cost $608 for the whole antenna. And it's only a 40 meter antenna. 40 through 10 meters. So the antenna that we can build with these parts does all that same stuff for about 50 bucks. Yeah, well, you know, like you said, you know, you build a lot cheaper and that kind of stuff like that. Sure you can. But you know, getting back to the computer, the thing is that.
Ldg, I believe it is. I've listed those. I've looked at those other times. This right here has a three year warranty. If something goes wrong with us, they packed up and said they know that or they fix those things. And I don't anticipate anything going wrong with them. So, I mean, that's the reason I went ahead and got this along with the radio. Yeah. Because it's working fine. I think better than it be. All right. Well, the thing that I like about this little antenna tuner that I'm talking about that can tune like 8 to 9, 10 to 9, 10, 8 to 1, 10 to 1 types of antennas, 3 to 1 is a piece of cake. It's a little tiny box. It actually has a rechargeable battery in it. So you don't even have to supply power to has an in and out.
And that's it. That's all there is to it. It's got a little screen on the front that tells you what's going on. And of course, you start out just like an LDG. You start out with about 5 watts, 10 watts. The whole thing's 50 bucks. So, warranty on a $50 antenna tuner, well, shoot, you just buy two and have a spare. That's the crossing. It's just amazing how well they work too. No, you're right. Yeah. The. The 50 here. This one I have. I don't. I don't put power to it. It gets power from the radio. So I guess in the long run, you put power into the radio, it takes power. So. But you know how I came about. Get this trigger of God was what I did, was.
I spent probably 30 minutes on the phone with ya zoo technician in back east someplace. I got a cell phone and he explained all that stuff to me. He said, you get this. He says, as long as you're antennas and a resident of someone. He said it first five, you know, he said, you go with the ldg. He said there's nothing wrong with them. But he said this is a lot better. He said if I wanted to, I could actually take the lid off of it. Or they'll do it for me and flip a few dip switches and it will shoot it coming in. Like if you send the signal to me, that signals to my radio.
Okay, that's interesting. Yeah, that's different. I guess what that's saying is that if you're receiving something, it can tell where. Where the receiver is because it's digitally connected to the radio. So it can tell where the receiver is, and it's tuning the antenna tuner as you change your frequency. Interesting concept. And I'm kind of impressed with these maps. But I looked at the bottom of it, and it is not a standard. It doesn't have a way to connect it to something so you can hold it up unless you connected to his kind of expensive stuff that he. That he used to.
With his special antenna. So, yeah, it won't do. It won't do me any good to think about getting one of those replacement masks, even though it's twice as long as the one that I have now. The one I have now is 5.9 meters, and this one is 9 meters, 29ft, where mine is like 17ft. So that's the difference. Yeah, well, you know, like I said, I can get 300 now. Like I said, don't quote me on the. On the footage, because I ain't hooked this up. Don't care to. If it's 350ft, 335ft, whatever 80 meters is, if I want to throw a wire out there and get it down with the ballot was the one or two.
W e 60.
And I do that pretty cheap, actually. You know, probably for. I already got some wire, so I probably get out of maybe 50 bucks at the most, something like that. Oh, you can. I. I've. For years, what I did was I threw up 120ft of wire as an inverted V, you know, 65ft for each wire coming down from the pole piece, coax connect to the. To each wire up at the top, right directly into the shack. No balance, no nothing. Worked great. And easy to tune it as inverted. These are. And yeah, 120 total feet of wire. A lot of times it was just, you know, whatever wire I could find. Anything didn't matter because you just want to get an antenna.
Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm saying. You know, you could. You could throw up something like that. But. But anyway, no, I just. Just hanging out. I'll probably end up getting the motorcycle. Tell you the truth about it, it's a lot cleaner. It may not get out as far. May not have the performance it should have, but it's a lot cleaner to have a bunch of fire hanging out everywhere. Yeah, unfortunately, the DX commander full version verticals are 599, 699. You know, if you don't want to build it yourself, you got to pay the money. Yeah, that sounds about like.
Was that a comment, or do you say that was the DX Commander? That's the DX Commander that I was telling you had a part on it that was 119 bucks. But the actual antenna that that part goes in is like 499, 599, something like that. Yeah, that's. That's what I was talking about is something like 4 99, 23 foot. That's from the ground. Yeah. Like I said, it, you know, it all depends. You know, I have to sit here and figure out what I want to do and how I want to do it. But right now, I'm going to be talking 80 meters off of that hustle because I've already got. Yep, that'll get you on the air. I've got the full.
Package. You know of hustlers? Probably about $300 worth of antenna parts. I've got them all. One for every band. The big old, big old bunch of antenna parts. If I want to have all the different bands with me. Yeah, well, like I said, I'll just throw the 80 meter up now. I set the. I didn't set it. The guy that told me, he said it's already one to one. And I put it on back of my pickup and I checked it with about 25 foot of coal ash. And I think it was like. Was it too. You know, it was very minimal. And then he had two.
I forgot what the previous thing he said he had two for, but it was higher on each end of the fan than in the middle. Yeah, I get on 80 with that engine I threw up. Made out of wire. I think I've got about 60 or $70 worth of wire because I went with the really good copper to kind, you know, the real copper type. Antenna wise. I got 60, $70 worth of. And I work on every band and it's basically invisible. The one thing I would have to worry about is that a helicopter could come down back in my big field and not know that antenna wires there. I mean, that's how invisible it is. You cannot see it. Nobody knows it's there. And today I work.
Kn6wnr ko6bgy kn6wnr k06bgy.
Three different stations in Australia had full conversations with three different stations. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've heard. I hear them all the time over there anymore now. What I think is pretty interesting, like these guys right now, they're. They're over on the coast south of San Francisco of all Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz Capitola Aptos. And then they drag in stations out of Oregon and every place else I can sit here, just take them off. But they meet every evening about this time right now.
I just realized I still have that. I think. Yeah, I do. I still have that 10 meter antenna on. No wonder. For some reason it tunes it. But it's 10 meter antenna. It just isn't really getting what I normally get. Yeah, they're. They're probably on 80 meters, right? You're talking 80 meters if you're on or. What are you talking about? Yeah, they're on 80 meters. They're. They call themselves, I think. Well, I. They don't call themselves. This guy was joking. He said that, you know, they're all. They know each other, obviously, and they say there's a 38 over 8 budget and that's what frequency. They're all.
Yeah, you'll find groups like that, especially in the evening, on 81 of them. One of the groups that I. I had my hustler set up in the. In the truck and I. I had, you know, the 80 meter loop on or part on it, and I heard, I believe it was 80, maybe 40. But anyway, this guy named Smitty got on it, who we get on 30 on this frequency on 36, you know, he continues to come in quite often. I'm 36 and. And he.
And his buddies and I had a conversation as I drove from Fort Jones all the way down to. All the way down to my place here in red. You remember where Fort Jones is, right? Yeah, yeah. It's off 8 or off of 5? Yeah, I've heard video there. I think he lives in Brockville. I'm not sure, but isn't he a disc jockey on a radio station? Something like that. Radio stations have changed so much, you know, I think what he calls his studio is right there in his house and so forth.
All. All kind of remote now, I think. Oh, okay. Well, yeah, he. I listen to everyone. He knew a lot of Bay Area stations that I used to listen to down there in the Bay Area, but. Yeah, you're right. You know, I remember the first time I ever heard of remote broadcasting, but it's back in the Zeit. Okay. I don't know if you remember Jimmies on kgo. Well, I don't remember him specifically. I might. He might be the guy I listen to most of the time on kgo. I did use. I did listen to kgo, like, way back. Way, way back. I lived in the Redwoods when I was going to college.
W e6a x n repeater. Kn6wnr.k06bgy. Got there. Matthew.kn6wnr, k06bgy. Negative contact. K06bgy. Clear.
I was like, 17 years old. Because these people had this thing called a church camp. And in the winter, nobody stayed there. So they wanted somebody there to keep it from being destroyed by the local kids who did things you weren't supposed to do sometimes. And for a while, I lived in. In what they called the cook shack. But there was too much critter action in the cook shack. So I moved out of that, into this little trailer. Beautiful place, right in the redwoods down in a valley. And had a little creek called Elk river flowing right by it. Every kind of wildlife you could ever imagine. Bears, deer, whatever. And I wanted to listen to AM radio. So there were real wood trees right outside the door of that little trailer I was in. So I ran a wire straight up that tree.
Just hanging right from the branches of the tree straight down into the trailer. And not only could I pick up kgo, but I could pick up stations in British Columbia and all over Canada and just everywhere in the world on AM radio. Had a little car radio in the trailer. Yeah, yeah. You talk about. Well, when you talk about kto. I listened to them back when I was. Second grade. First grade. My sister gave me a pretty neat AM radio. I listened to that night because I lived it there. And I don't know what to. I can't remember what you're talking about. I don't know what they were talking about.
At the time. All I know is there was people all night long. Sometimes they get in the fight argument. But now coming back up more in the present. When I was driving truck down there, Jim Eason used to be on between two and four and he's been on there forever and he was real popular and he was going to retire back in the 90s and move to North Carolina or South Carolina and instead of losing him, they set him up a station in his basement so that he could remotely transmit. Yeah, that was pretty unusual in those days. I worked with an engineer that set up things like that. I was the antenna guy and.
We'd go out to all these AM radio stations, and the whole FCC made you test everything. So we test everything. And sometimes you'd find that the antenna, that the tower, you know, the antennas were towers. You know, they weren't wires. You know, they were towers. And. But sometimes they were. One time, one of them was too short. So he had this rod, and he says, go up on top of that tower and mount this rod tower. And he had a radio kind of like your891 sitting at the bottom and waited for me to get that rod mounted, made the tower maybe 6 or 8 or 10ft longer. Then I came down and you turned on that radio a lot. Like your 891 had SWR bridge and measured it. And it was really.
Really close. And he was happy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. KGO had. Now, he didn't broadcast as far as the RF all the way from North Carolina. I'm sure that what he did was he did it digitally through the Internet, and then it came up out here. But he continued his show for like two years after that from his house in north of South Carolina. Have you ever heard of a guy named Bill Wattsberger? Oh, but I wanted to ask you real quick, what was the year for that, what he was doing? What, what years was it he died? I would say that would be I'm going to venture to say I was doing.
Cruise at the time. So I'm going to say that was probably like 90 or 91. Well, the reason I asked that was, and I thought that was going to be the case, was that the Internet was just barely, barely operational. And the way they did things back then was they, they had kind of like, it would cost a lot more money. They had these like, like telephone microwave systems. That's how you, how you did that sort of thing back then. And was there somebody else out there? N6TRG? I guess not. So, yeah, they, they didn't generally use the Internet back then. They had these. It was like, all part of the telephone system, sort of. Yeah, it could. I can't swear that they were using. I don't know.
So, yeah, they very well could have been using, you know, the telephone lines of the infrared or whatever. But somehow they got his signal from his house in North South Carolina. He come up out here so he could broadcast in the Bay Area here. That's how he was real popular. And then eventually he got a hold of it and he said, that's it. I killed the show. So he quit and Clear. Clear Channel. I know you've heard of them. They bought all these radio stations. Oh, yeah, I know. Clear Channel. Do you have a pen or a pencil handy? Yeah, go ahead. I want you to put this into a computer on Google. Just go to Google and then.
Put what I'm going to give you into the computer. P as in papa. S as in sam. K as in king. Reporter. All one word. Psk reporter. There's a little bit more. The last word is map. The first part is all one word. PSK Reporter. And the second part is map. Oh, okay. You already gave it. I was wondering why I had that in here. I already got an icon.
Okay. And then when you go there, when you get that map on there, then it's gonna say on the top, it's gonna say a few things like call letters and mode. And, like, if you want. If you want to test it, I'll tell you how to do it. If you actually have it on a computer right now. Well, I got this other deal going right now, but, yeah, I've already got. I got that. I've already listened to that map, and. Well, on top of it there, you know, you type it, you call. Size tells you where you're at. Okay, well, if you put my call sign in there, but you have to put jsa call, Juliet, Sam, eight call. There's a mode thing, and it asks you. I show you.
Is it like a drop down menu kind of thing? And one of the things in that drop down is a day as they call and then my call letters and then change it to 24 hours. And you'll see a map of who I communicate with. Yeah, I see your call sign in there. And if you click on your call sign like you said, show everybody you talk to, I guess. And a lot of, a lot of them, unfortunately, I reach them, but they don't reach me. Could be that they're low powered. I don't know what the deal is. Could be I'm just. Got too much noise here. But they, I reach them and they don't reach me. But today I reached a whole bunch of them. I reached all those Australian stations and I could hear them.
W e set a x N repeater.
So that was cool. Today. That was very special today. Every shortcut figured. Boy, I think we doubled there. Yeah. Today was a special day. I reached a whole bunch of my reach stations in Australia and everything. It's a really good day to look at that map today. Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, it's. It's. That's pretty cool. Yeah, I got. I'm getting a lot of ham stuff on this computer. Yeah, I'm gonna give you a. Well, I've already got me a terabyte external. I'm gonna start saving all that external. That way I get take one, computer, two. All the rest, we had to take our hard drive. Well, you know, thing about.
Like this PSK reporter thing is it's just simply a website. So all you have to do is have it in the bookmarks, in your, you know, your bookmarks or your favorites or whatever you have on your browser and that's done. You don't have to have the drive for that. No, I understand what you say, but I mean all this other stuff, programming software. But see, I have. Yeah, most everything is, is in cloud or web based they call it. And all you're doing is you're just looking at the control panel. But I right now, the way things are going, I have to take my Dell Plus 5 Chromebook is already to have all the programs I want. So I rather do is put it all on that hard drive.
What kind of programs are you putting on there? No, I mean. Well, okay, like my digital voice. Okay. And the key was it K, I W, I S D R, which that's web based. I have that on Chromebook. And I mean, I got tons of it. I'm starting to get the whole screen filled up. Well, the cool thing about bookmarks that I use, I use Firefox, and the bookmarks are just right. Saved right in the computer. No, no cloud or anything, but yeah, still get it worked out, downloaded it to the computer.
I mean, on the program where I can program all my radios and stuff. It's a full program, a lot of stuff that you download off the Internet. It just gives you a shortcut to get to that. That website, if you will. Yeah, you're talking about Chirp, which is a really tiny program, but it sure is a good one. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway, nevertheless, the. The programs that I have to have, that I have in the computer, I'll put all this. But what I'm saying is, is I just. You talk about two different things here. Okay. I'll talk about regular program that come and download on my hard drive. We double transfer those into.
Terabyte so that I could run it on either computer. Just take one computer instead of two. What you're talking about is web based. What's no, web based is like SDR is web based. I go into any computer and get that sdr. Well, the only reason I mentioned it is because you mentioned several things that were web based. So I just mentioned, well, those are just favorites bookmarks, you know. But then I asked you what the programs were, and you did mention something to do with digital voice or something like that. No, well, see, that's actually web based as well. But like for my 300 for my kid word, for my eight diary.
Those radios, plus the other stuff that I have downloaded into this hard drive. Those are all computer based. Other words, I kill them. The Internet is still running. Yeah, so. So what sort of programs are you running that work with 891? I can program your software into the. And what. What's the name of the software? I don't. Oh my God. What I'm saying is I get it out of envelope and tell him, but I don't know. It's software that came with it and the software that I bought for it, okay?
So you don't remember the name of any of them? Doesn't sound like you've explored it quite yet. But anyway, you explored Chirp. That's a good one. Well, wait a minute, Mike. You see, this is. This is what's wrong. You say that I did more stuff. You're accusing. You're putting me on like, a third degree here. Okay? If I go through and I say I got programmed for SDR, not 300, I have it for my SD70, I have it for Kinwood. I'm not going to go through and tell you every piece of software. I know enough about computers. I've been working with them since 80. That is once downloaded in my hard drive. And I could probably tell you something about computers. And see, that's what. That's what gets. You put me on third degree. And you're watching those things.
Names of everything I know what the difference between web based and hard drive based? Yeah, and that's why I said you got a whole drive full of software and I just wanted the name of one program. Just one program, that's all I wanted. Okay, yaesu 300D. Okay, that's the name of a radio. That's the name of the model number of a radio. Okay, that's not a program, that is a program. And if you have a hundred dollar bill, I'll speak to anywhere you want and I'll show you the program. Okay, Well, I don't think we're getting too far here, so anyway, it's really been nice talking to you. Yeah, we're not getting very far.
It tells me that's not a program. And I downloaded in the computer. It's called 300VR. I believe it is. Programming software. Okay. Yeah. I guess Chirp won't program that radio, so you have to have programming software for it. So. All right. Okay. Well, hope you can work it out. And I highly recommend this antenna that Steve's using. I highly recommend it. And whoever's keying up a whole bunch of times. That's all you're doing is keying up and you're just making a bunch of rapids. So, anyway, really good talking to John and 60 Archie. And if we'll program the 300, if.
Will program the rest of my radio all but the SD70 and see what you don't know is what I bought and put in this computer. And that's what I'm trying to tell you. And I'm not going to go through every program I have on my computer because it takes all night and it was just a cordial conversation. I don't need to tell you everything. I haven't that I was going to do it. I just mentioned that I was going to move them all over to a hard drive so I could use my computer. And like you said, I think we ought to just end the conversation. So have a good night. Ks 6 slide.
Well. N6grg clear cyan artist.
The software name is rt systems. N6grt clear.
Kn6sla.
This is kf6mcx. Could I get an audio check, please? W6rhc repeater check three. Good evening, Lester. How am I sounding? Sounding real good. Come back again. Let me listen to that one more time. 6k uo, this is kf6ncx. Very clear. Not a. Not a bit of scratch or anything. Okay, great. Thank you, and we'll talk to you in a few minutes. This is larry, kf6ncx.
D.
Qst. Qst, qst. This is Larry, located in Chico, your net control station for tonight's Golden Empire Amateur Radio society club. Net. It's Larry. KF6NCX. This net meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30pm on the W6RHC repeater for the purpose of fellowship and public service through amateur radio. Is there any station with emergency or priority traffic? Are there any general announcements for the Net? If you have an announcement for the Net, please respond with your call sign, W6js. Yes, w6js. Go ahead. Tomorrow.
W6js. As of Sunday, we had two new general or two new extras and one general passed. I gotta thank Jim for taking my my place and because I was at a Christmas party in Reno. But we have three upgrades. That was great. Two. Two extras and one general. Congratulations.
Of Sunday. We had two new General or two new extras and one General passed. I gotta thank Jim for taking my my place and because I was at a Christmas party in Reno. But we have three upgrades. That was great. Two. Two extras and one General. Congratulations. Yeah, that's good news. Good work. We'll be grateful to Jim for that. I have a couple of announcements. I want to remind everybody that the Gears Christmas party is happening two weeks from yesterday on December 15th at the Chico Library. Doors open at 6pm and the festivities start at 7. If you're interested, please bring a gift, an anonymous gift to exchange with someone.
Should be gift wrapped and shouldn't cost more than $20 and should in some way relate to ham radio. And then please bring some some food to share because we're going to have a potluck. So that's the Christmas party on December 15th at the Chico Library. The other thing is we've been having this slow speed heat Morse code Net on Thursday evenings from starting at 7pm and we've been having problems with the propagation with people not being able to hear each other. So we're going to try a new time and hope that it works better. It will be at 3:30pm on Thursday and it's the same frequency on the 40 meter band, 7.052. So that's 3:30pm on Thursday for the CW net.
Okay, it's time for roll call and check ins. When checking in, please give your call sign name and location. Please key up for a full second before speaking due to the repeater lag time. First is can6pww. How about K6EST? Good evening, Larry, and thank you for doing the net. This is Jim, K6EST in Chico. And I'll be in and out tonight. Thank you. Okay, Jim, thank you for the check in. How about kg6k u o? Good evening, Larry. This is kg6k u o.
And you have a good evening. And I'll be in and out. And thank you very much for run with that. Hey, thank you, Lester. You have a good evening, too. Next is kf6ncx. That's me, Larry and Chico. And I'm net control tonight about W W6Js. This is W6JS. We're right across the freeway from Denny's, and we'll be hanging around. Okay, good deal, Tom. We'll talk to you a little later. Daryl, mobile.
This is W6JS. We're right across the freeway from Denny's, and we'll be hanging around.
Coming up from Sacramento. Hey, great. Thanks for the check in, Daryl. You're going to be sticking around for the Round Table? Negative. I'm mobile. I'm driving in this crazy fog. Okay, well, be careful, take it slow, and we'll talk to you next week. Thanks for the check in. Next is k7kfs. About KD6 lok. Good evening, Larry and the net kilo delta six lima, Oscar kilo Doug here on the.
Kn6gtn wp6axm receiver. Kn6gtn Ko6bgy how you doing? Foggy and cold over here in Calusa. Well, that sounds like it's kind of widespread. It's. It's cloud. It's foggy and cold. And banger, too, if I remember correctly. You guys have more than we do because you have elevation, so that might be hindering things, but overall, a good night. I mean, I still got the windows open trying to say get some fresh air in the house, but I don't know. I mean, I've always thrown an extra layer on. I throw the heater on at night when I need to, but during the night, it's like, not that cold in the house, probably.
Nice sunshiny Nimshu Ridge when it's not dark. Anyway, thanks for doing the net. Happy holidays off M73. I will be in and out tonight. KD6 Lok. Okay, thank you, Doug. You have a good evening. How about N60 UK? Yes, good evening. 60 UK clearance in Corning. I'll be around listening, but just put me in and out. Show 73 all the way around to see the greetings from at 60 UK Corning. Okay, thanks for the check in, Clarence. And put you down. In and out. K6 Gab. Hey, good evening. This is K6GAB Greg in North Chico. I will have a quick comment tonight. Back to net control.
Outside for most of the day. So anyway, hopefully you had a good part of your day. Oh yeah, Day went well. But yeah, I've been surprised how high this fog goes up. So my customers live up in the Berry Creek area and up towards Forbestown. They have to go up the hill quite a ways to get above the fog. Even in paradise during the day today, the sun was shining up there, but as soon as evening rolled around, the fog moved in there too. I'm just kind of. Given the last couple years, this is the coldest it's been in Calusa consistently for a while now. I mean, usually the last couple of years we've been up in the high 40s or low 50s and we.
Hey, good evening. This is k6jb. Greg in north chico. I will have a quick comment tonight. Back to net control.
Okay, great, Greg. We'll look forward to hearing from you a little later. KN6PJU. I'm Larry and the rest of the net. This is Dennis.km6pju. Checking in from North Chico. And I'll be in and out. Thank you for the check in, Dennis. Have a good evening. Next is kc6ufe6ufe. Bill in cape. Good evening. Check me in. Put me on the list. You're on the list, bill. How about kn6jht? Kb6cyj?
Been lucky to break out of the mid to high 40s. I mean, I'm not complaining. I mean, it's comfortable compared to the heat as far as I'm concerned. But yeah, it's just maybe we're in for one of those winters, I guess. Yeah, I know. Okay. It's been. It's been a number of years. I mean, a lot of years. Even some of the old timers around here are. Are saying they don't remember when it's been like this. So, yeah, it's a little different year for us, but I guess we had it coming. We had a beautiful summer. So looks like this is what, this is the result of that maybe. Yeah, absolutely. As far as summer went, yeah, we had hot days. But there was a couple years back, I mean, I'm only 37 going on 38, but there was a couple summers back not too long ago that it felt like it was consistently 100 plus 100 plus 100 plus for months.
Aj 6 we x. How about aj6wv. And kn6kwm? Okay. In six kilowatts, Dan, down at Biggs. Thank you. I'll be in and out. Okay. Thanks for the check in, Dan. And you have a good night. And last on our list is k06kkw.
And into the early to late fall as well, so this is a welcome sight. Now, if we can just get the rain. I can't speak for you, but we haven't had much rain. We've had a decent amount so far, but nowhere near what I thought we would have. But then again, I mean, I can remember back to the flood of 97, and that was once in a lot of time for me, and it's nowhere near as bad as the one that hit during the 50s or 60s. I think it was in this area that was a mess on Christmas Day, from what I recall from history. Yeah, I don't know about that, the earlier flood, but I do remember the 96 or New Year's Day. 97, the great flood of 97. We were living up in Portola at that time and it was nasty. Yeah, I'll never forget. That was quite an event.
Okay, are there any late members who want to check in? Any members who have were doing something or other and just got on and missed their name the first time around or their call sign the first time around? How about any visitors? Do we have any visitors tonight who'd like to check in? Okay, no visitors. Anybody else at all who wants to check in? Anyone waiting in the wings? Now is your chance.
But yeah we had some nice rain early on and I figured we're going to have a nice wet winter but it's wet alright it's just damp but we haven't had a lot of rain since no we have not I've actually been surprised as well I mean as much moisture as is on the ground enough to make it look like it rained with like the asphalt or the road whatever but no there's no frosted windows it hasn't gotten that cold but it's definitely I think we're due for some rain in my opinion we haven't like you said we got a good start at it but I've looked and looked and I haven't seen I'll see like a 2 or 3% chance you're just counting for the ground clouds that you're seeing out there but I picked up a couple of foul bang uv5r minis and they actually have the program they're already programmed for the weather station and they've been proven pretty well.
Okay, well we have one more item and that's the swap segment. Does anyone have any ham radio related items that they would like or that they have and would like to sell? Please come now if you have something for the swap segment. Well, let's go back around and go with the round table. Looks like I'm first on the list. Lucky me. Well, I had some fun last weekend with the 160 meter ARRL concept.
These little radios. So do they have the NOAA weather radio stations programmed in them, too? That, that's pretty neat. Yeah, they do. I want to say it's one through 10 or one through 11, I can't remember. I want to say it's one through 10. And for this area, we get one. So I think it's I forget something, something 520-or-5550 or something like that. And they also apparently, I I mean, I live in Calusa, so we don't we do have an airport, but it's not very active. But apparently they receive AM bands, so you could, in theory, be near or have a good enough antenna to where you could get some actual ATC stuff. I mean, I haven't seen too many radios that'll do that. Yeah, those weather stations, when we lived in the Midwest, where we had.
Test. I have an inverted L antenna and I think have the right, I guess you'd call it a transformer now. So that was set up and some radials on the ground, and I had a pretty good time. I was. I was hoping to try to make some contacts going qrp, but it was very difficult. I only made one that way, and it's with a huge station on the edge of the Bay Area. So that was the way I was able to do that. And then I tried 100 watts and had some success that way. But I finally cranked it up using my amp to 500 watts and had better luck that way. I got as far east as, I think one station in Wisconsin and one station in Illinois.
Lot of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. That was something we lived by. I mean, we made sure we had those weather monitors and weather stations close by where we could, you know, always figure out what's going on. But since I'm out here, I don't use them as much. But I. I should start programming more of those in just so we could listen in on the weather if we wanted to. That was. That was pretty neat. You could, you know, have real time or almost real time information from the National Weather Service.
And a couple in Missouri, and all the rest were sort of in the West. But it was fun. And the other thing I want to mention is this weekend is a good another good contest, another arrl contest, the 10 meter contest. And it's both Morse code and single sideband, starts on Friday at 4 and runs until Sunday at 4. So there should be a lot of activity on the air. And hopefully 10 feeders will be open. It has been lately. It was open today, which is we'll hope for the best for this weekend. Okay, that's it for me. Let's move along. Next is Tom W6JF well, I I had drooping antennas.
Kn6gtm.
Well, I. I had drooping antennas, and I have an N fed. It's a 40 meter, and it goes across the whole property. And it was drooping a little bit. I had to. I really, when I put it up there, I put it with a Dacron rope or something, an antenna rope, they call it or whatever. And all I had to do is pull a couple feet of it, straighten it out. Then I got a fan dipole. I had to do that, too. I left a little bit in case the wind moves the trees around so I don't break it. But that's all I have. And maybe I'll get better reception on 40 meters. Okay. This is Tom W. 6 JS. Quickly.
You still out there, KO6BTY? Yeah, still here. You went radio silent there for a little while. My apologies. I was on one of those new radios and it didn't have a charge and this one's on a low charge as well, so I'll make it short. But those little radios are pretty decent. I got good signal reports from inside the house with the stock. I haven't been able to do that yet with a stock robber duck. So I think I have some pretty good emergency go radio. I accidentally ordered a set of four. I ordered a set of two, but I accidentally ordered two sets of two. So I gave one away for Christmas and might donate one to a local club here. I don't have any reason, but it's right here. And you get out there. I'll go ahead and sign clear on your final Ko6gy from Calusa, California, where it's not.
And I have an N fed. It's a 40 meter and it goes across the whole property and it was grouping a little bit. I had to. I really, when I put it up there, I put it with a Dacron rope or some antenna rope they call it or whatever. And all I had to do is pull about a couple feet of it and straighten it out. Then I got a fan dipole. I had to do that too. I left a little bit in our case to wind moves the trees around so I don't break it. But that's all I have and maybe I'll get better reception on 40 meters. Okay, this is Tom W6JS. We're clear. Okay, sounds good, Tom. Good luck. Good luck with those antennas. I'll look for them when I drive by your place across the freeway from Denny's, which I do occasionally. Next we have greg k6 gabriel.
Nice and foggy, even in town. Kind of nice.
What's going on, Greg? Hey, just Ken, a quick comment. I thought I heard you say at the beginning that the next meeting and the gift exchange and potluck is going to be two weeks from last night. But I'm pretty sure it's actually one week from last night on the 15th, per Jim's last email to the group. That's all. Hey, thanks for correcting me. You are right. I don't know. My, my math isn't working too good. I know it was on the 15th, and somehow I was thinking that the 15th was two weeks from yesterday. But gee, yesterday was the 8th. Take seven days, and that's the 15th. So I appreciate you setting me straight on that. And you're right. It's happening next Monday, a week from last night. Good deal.
Hey, just had a quick comment. I thought I heard you say at the beginning that the the next meeting and the gift exchange and the potluck is going to be two weeks from last night. But I'm pretty sure it's actually one week from last night on the 15th, per Jim's last email to the to the group. That's all.
Listening on the side out there somewhere. How are you, David? Doing just fine. When are you gonna start picking? Not your nose. Those things. The little orange things on the tree. I was thinking about you yesterday. I said, one of these days, David's gonna be asking about those oranges. Today's the day I was getting. I've been meaning to do it for the last week and a half. Well, to answer the question, they're hanging thick out there, and we haven't started picking yet. This is kind of miserable weather to pick. I'd say within a week or two, we'll be having those bags full. And they are starting getting to sweeten up now, huh? That they are. They. They were checking the. They have a little meter to check them with to see what's.
It should be fun. Next on our list is case c6ufe, bill and capay. 66 UFE, Bill and Cape. Good evening to the group. I notice everybody's signals are sounding a little foggy tonight. So hope you're all enjoying the weather. I guess it's here to stay, is what they say. At least we're not getting an atmospheric river like they are up in the Northwest. So, anyway, not much else for me tonight. Back to net KC6UFE. Okay, Bill. Good. Yeah, that's a good point. It's better, I guess. It's better to have cold and fog. Thank you.
The sugar content is or something. But, yeah, they were doing that over the weekend. And I'll tell you, there's. There's some of them bricking right up there with the best. I mean, they were actually a little sweeter than last year. WPAXM repeater. Good. Because I'm starting to get a hunger for them. You let me know when. When I get ready and I'll take a drive up that away. Very good. I'll make sure I do that. I was thinking about you, so. Yeah, we'll make sure that happens. We're looking forward to it. Yeah, I just really enjoyed them the last couple years, and I'm looking forward to it again. Yeah. Very good. We really enjoy them, too. So you've been out playing Frisbee with your dog in this class.
A big rainstorm, an atmospheric river that washes us out. So you're gonna get on for the 10 meter contest? I will probably check out the band, see what's there. And if there's something I want to make contact with, I will. But I'm not gonna vigorously make contact with stations. Over. Not gonna sit there for 36 hours and non stop or anything like that, huh? I just don't have that kind of patience anymore. Back to you, Larry. Okay, good enough. Well, we've gone through the list. Is there anyone else who wants to make another comment or anything like that? Have anything to say, anybody at all?
Cloudy, dreary weather. No, no, it's been too cold out there. I don't like it when it's cold and neither does my dog. So we stay in the house and kind of throw the ball around or the frisbee around the house a little bit, wherever we can throw it. And she'll chase it. But no, we're not getting the exercise we need to be getting, either one of us. Sounds to me like you're both boiled rotten. Gets a little better weather. We'll get back out here and get started at it again. Yeah, it's been pretty cold down here. It just seems like even in the house with the heater on, it's still. Still been cold on the back. Yes, it sure has.
Or is anybody appeared who hasn't had a chance to check in yet? If. If so, please give us your name and call sign. Okay. Well, good enough. This concludes this week's Golden Empire Amateur Radio Society clubnet. Thank you to everyone who checked in tonight. You were invited back next week. This is Larry. KF6NCX returning the W6RHC repeater to its normal monitoring service. The net is closed at 7:47pm 73 to all. KF6NCX is cleared.
That's amazing. Even like I was saying earlier to Paul there, even some of our old timers up here are whining about they haven't seen it like this in a long, long time. I know I haven't. It seems like it could get cooled off and just all of a sudden it started getting cold. We had nice weather, beautiful weather for nice summer and then, boy, just all of a sudden it got cold and that came to a shocker to me. Exactly. Yeah, that made it a little worse. We had a beautiful summer, beautiful fall, just on and on. But all of a sudden, like you said, all of a sudden it was. This is a different story. I'm hoping here in a day or two we'll at least get a day or two break the way it the forecast is. But as foggy as it is up here tonight, I don't have a lot of confidence.
Got that right. What are you doing running around so late this evening? Is this church night or what? No, I. I've got to run into town and drop a couple quarters in the slot there at the bank. Get. Get rid of my loot. There you go. Yeah, I heard you say drop a couple quarters into the bank. I was thinking maybe the casino, but no. You met the real bank, huh? Wouldn't that be something if you'd start calling a casino a bank? A lot of people invest in that, wouldn't they? Got a sister in law that when she lived in Oroville, she invested in on senior day in senior morning. And she always did pretty good. It worked out like a bank to her. She was just a lucky girl.
And I've got a customer that same way she can. She does pretty good when she goes in there. At least according to the reports I hear, anyhow. So. Yeah, there might be a way to work that. I don't know. She. She never. I don't know that she ever lost. Boy, she'd take their money and spend their. She wouldn't spend her money. She'd spe. Spend their money. And she would always come home with a pocket full of money. I mean, a pocket. I mean, she had enough to last her for another week. Oh, something's going on in there. We're getting some feedback or something in there. Do. Do that again there. Ernie. Yeah? You've been covered up a couple times.
Too, by something. But I was saying not a lot of people have that kind of success in that environment. Know what that was? It was something in there cutting through the fog, I guess. Yeah. And it's a pretty strong signal. It pretty well covers up the repeater. I'm not for sure what's going on. It certainly was different. I wasn't getting full words out of it, but I was getting that kind of stuff. Information only. K was 682. Why? There was a lot of static there as well. Not sure what happened.
Well, I'm getting into town here and the fog's pretty thick. I better pay attention to what's going on. Good chatting with everyone. Good to hear you out there, David. And I'll let you know when those. When I'm ready to have you come up here. So you have A Good evening, KN6GTN73S. Okay. And don't rely on the radio to get a hold of me. You got my number. Okay, Arnie 73. Talk at you later. WA1ner. David. Yuba City, and I'll be clear. Standing by. Wa1ner.ko6vgy. No need for a return call. Just good to hear you out there, David. We're fogged in, too. Kind of enjoying it, though. It's nice and cool and I'm not sweating my tail off. So. Anyway, I'll say 7 3. I'm gonna get back to my movie. Ko6bty. Thanks for jumping in there, Paul. Okay, Good hearing.
You there. 73 wa180r and I'll be clear. While I got the radio here, I'm going to go ahead and throw a call out for matthew kn6wnr. Ko6 means ui calling kn out there, matthew. I'll take that as a no. Ko6bgy. I'll be clear.
W6r h c west repeater.
Good evening. This is Patrick Kn6rth in Browns Valley. And I have a manual transfer switch, a plug I wired on the outside of the house. It's all done really nice. And I just run a cable to my 9,000 watt generator, and I run it on propane, but it'll do either gas or propane. Radios are on baino batteries, and we can run everything in the house. Ko6BGY coffee. So you guys off grid or power down? Like powers out, or you're just testing your equipment to see what the capacity is?
All right. Just confirming that there was a test station out there. You're making it loud and clear, K06 easy Y all be clear. W e6a x n repeater.
W6T&H, this is K6KDS, do you copy? Yeah, Carla, go ahead. W6T&H. Hey. So I thought I'd just give you a shout out. I just finished up with the concert and got in my car, and it seems like my temperature gauge is stuck on 44. It's been that way for days. Yeah, it seems like it's just stuck there. Maybe we ought to thump it and see if it warms up. Yeah, actually, I'm enjoying it. I don't mind this cold weather, but anyway, had a good concert tonight. It was packed. It was a packed crowd and. Yeah, it was. It was really busy, though, let me tell you. I look forward to hearing all about it. Yeah, we'll have to do that over dinner.
Oh, dinner. Yes. Yes, that sounds good. Hey, I was going to ask you, how's FT8 going? It's really good. Are you on 20 or are you on 80? I'm on 80 right now. Awesome. I can't wait. 6 q o p.
Yeah. System 19, link up. You know, with a person of your schedule, I would expect you to be on the radio and be waking an hour and not dilly dallying those responses.
I was listening to ARL News on another speaker, so I thought I heard my call sign. I was listening for a second. All right, well, I guess we'll let that go this time. So I am on the newly installed link radio 11. I did not put this on the service monitor, so I'm hoping it's close enough to work. Yeah, I think so. I'm getting noise in there that I think is baseball or one or two other things.
But other than that, yeah, I think it's good. All right. I'm getting a pause on YouTube, so. All right. I guess I'll let it run around, see how it goes. And. I got a radio program for as well, so I'll still try and do that.
I switched around. I was on local. Darn it. I said, okay. I saw the email. You said 19. I think you meant 4 in the email. We've got a couple of good radios.
In the email, Everybody you sent to figured out what you were talking about. And are we thinking of a trip in January? I think I remember an email about that too. Does that still sound like it might be something happening? Yes. I was going to pick you up about that again, so I'd like to.
Dovetail that into going down to a down there as well, Around the 22nd, 23rd, 24th, I believe so that'll work. So.
Yeah, it will. All right. I've been thinking about that. Yeah. I could cut something up. I don't know. My busy schedule, though, you know? Yeah. Let me see if I can what that period of time is. As far as appointments. I've got one or two, but I think I'm probably clear. So I will check it and see. All right, let me know. Check with freight, too. Place, I think it was.
Please. Id. Thank you.
Picture of the antenna may have got. I don't recall that, so I don't think he said no. All right, Again. All right. Anything else before? Let's get back to your.
Whatever. No, I don't think so. One thing I want to try real quick here. Hang on one second.
Well, Never mind. If 11 was for Chunky a couple of times, that would have been me. All right, I'm back on the link. Yeah, if 11 was for chunking local, that was me, but I didn't hear it come back.
Okay. Yeah, I was trying to talk to you on 11 fingers maybe. I said after checking the local hoping you would hear me, and I guess you didn't. So I did hear you a few times. You're noisier and more quieter than other time, but can't hear it. It really doesn't help. Yeah, a couple hours ago it was this breaking squelch here, but it seems to have gone away with the sun or something, so But I am bringing it up. I suspected I might be ker chunking it, but okay. I just wanted to test that. Common.
Since you in south bank. San jose, I think it was. Go ahead. Yeah, it sounds like you guys are frying eggs on your transmission to me. I'm sure it's not you guys specifically, but it sounds like J6HR. Flying eight over easy or upside up or raffle.
I'm on repeater, 10 links. Okay, and what are you hearing? Is it just a lot of noise hash, or is it a lot of clicking, popping type stuff or. Climate something?
Jeff, are you able to go over there and check and see what it sounds like or. And you got a little bit of the, you know, phase. Pause crackle and sound system 10 link off. Swing sound is gone on 10. How was on 7 at the time? I'm sorry. Crackling on 7. Nothing on 10. Okay.
Is7 still all messed up with the. Yes, it is. Yeah, over here it sounds a little more like apes frying, but yeah, it's the paved claws noise. The Lincoln seven. I didn't get to call a guy in San Jose there. The Lincoln 7 has an audio issue. It's very high pitched shrill so it makes things sound a little weird. Hopefully we can get to fix it in the Nazi distant future. But yeah, the noise is coming from basically a military base in it used to be the city Mary's elephant. It kind of does that to us.
Well, maybe you can work that into your busy schedule. And what else? Do me a favor and try it through a couple different machines and see if you can get. Let me go back over to 19. Yeah, actually, as mentioned, we ran into John at PH very recently and.
What was the last thing you said you wanted me to do? What? Well, hey, did you remember to talk to him about, you know. Yeah. The last thing I asked is that would you try and ping 11? Ah, okay. Well, darn it, you know, I complete. Of course I remember. In fact, I think he even. He brought it up. So he did it my. Okay, let me try here in 60. 11 shot in.
System who lit up. Yeah. Okay. Just tried a couple different ones, and that looks good. I need to make a short delay in there to put it out in the clear because it's chopping off the first.
All right. I'm sure you'll get right on there. All right. January and vice versa. All right. I'm going to try at some point, see if I can squeeze another half. An issue without anything. A couple of systems, and the left is one of them, because if it's breaking squelch, I may be able to actually use it. I can just get a teeny bit more through the toe axe.
All right, talk to you later in station San Jose. 73 to you in Six Fuel Beach. Excuse me, is all that popcorn due to a pave pause? This is wa60ksmr. Yeah, I think. I think it probably is. Yeah. Is that Tom and Lafayette over there? This is Jeff over by the ocean.
Open airport here. Yes, that was Tom Overland Lafayette. He might have jumped out real quick. I'm not sure. But if he's there, he'll pop back in, No problem. I'm. I just tried 1 4. I'm on 1 4, 6, 8 5. Not sure, but I looked my list, see what length that is. It used to be really noisy out here, and it's gotten a lot, a lot more solid in Martinez. I don't know if they move the repeater. It says, I guess Orenda or something, but it's. It's quite strong out here. And this is Tom popping back in real quick now. Nothing got moved on until. Are you able to get into 11 from where you're at?
On the dinosaur hill? No, negative. It's a too much dirt, but I can get into I guess 16. Hang on. Hey, I'm on like. What is this? No, that canal, I think. Okay, yeah, that's. There is a near antenna on 11, so I'm not sure. Physical candidate. You never know.
Yeah, I know what you mean. We have. I'm part of the CCRA repeater system, and they're. Their VHF antenna on 14549 is up on Bald. And it's pretty scratchy, too, a lot of the time. All kind of digital stuff up there. Okay. Thanks for coming back, Tom. I heard you several years ago, longer ago than that, at the Mount Diablo Amateur MDR Club talking about Carla, and it was good. I remember it well. Thank you very much. To me. Okay. Yep. I think Jeff is probably there with me, too, I think.
Done one of those in a long time. A lot of work. Get all the slides together. All right? Yeah, Roger. Yeah. The popcorn is almost overwhelming your audio there. Have a good evening. So you've been talking a lot today. WA 60 kids and Mark Anderson.

Ah, yes. It looks like the start of yet another beautiful day in Magalia. Good morning. Who was. So missed something? Abe. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Wasn't it? The band was weird. Check. I haven't even turned that one on. I'm gonna do coffee before I do. I was sleeping like a baby.
Oh, yeah, you'd be surprised. The greenness goes away. Yeah. What's even better is when you guys all work together instead of just set out separately. Gotta start at the south end or something. Or the north, whatever, and hit all three of the main veins going through town. All right, I'll be right back. Go north to south first. I'll cut down the time just. Just knocking that one facet out. Yeah, you don't know. You don't know how many houses we walked into in the CB world. Just walked right in the front door. Yeah. Can't get away with that nowadays. I'll be right back. N6MTM.
M. 17 M.D. las Lakes K6LNK System 36, Snow Mountain Range. Hey, good morning, Ralph. WP6JKV mobile, southbound 101 in the heart of Silicon Valley in Santa Clara. How's it going? System 13. Hey, morning, Mike. Yeah, it's going good. Going good. Going good. Beautiful day out here. We've not a cloud in the sky. We've been having kind of a warm. A warm snap. That's actually a term. We've been in the low 70s, getting some snow melt on the mountains, and I'm planning on making Friday a hooky day and running to one of our higher radio sites, putting back up a VHF repeater that I fixed, trying to get up there for a couple of weeks, but.
Weather has not cooperated. So anyways, other than that, good things are starting to slow down a little bit at work with the holidays coming up, so looks like it's gonna be a couple of. A couple of quiet weeks, hopefully. How about you? Yeah, status quo, man. Works crazy off the hook. Busy. Got my emails from the corporate EHS folks. Hey, at that time, have you done this? Have you done that? They go, yep, yep, sure have. I just haven't gotten around to getting on the computer and posting all this crap. So guess what I'm doing? I'm just gonna sit on the computer and veg with Excel and whatever else, man. That's a part of the job I hate. Yeah, right. Job.
The paperwork's done right. I get it. Unfortunately majority of my work anymore is doing that type of stuff but anyways that's why I like getting to the mountaintops and doing tech stuff and fun stuff. I got my hands on a new a new higher end VNA too. A buddy of mine turned me on to that has a much higher sweep rate and frequency range of like what 1 meg to 6 gig stupid capabilities and been messing with that a bit. So I'm going to take that up to Mount Pelosi this weekend because I got to sweep a set of a set of duplexers getting some decent I wanted the repeaters so I'm going to take that up with me. Pretty cool device man. It was like 320 bucks and pretty pretty nice size display but you can plug it into a PC using a USB C cable and they got a piece of software that runs at gives you a much easier user interface and.
Expansive capabilities of what the thing can do. Take screenshots, shots of Smith charts and Viswor traces and whatever else. So pretty neat. I went through and characterized my HF antennas a couple days ago with it and took some screenshots of that and put it on my drive so I can have a baseline of my antenna performance. But neat little gadget. I got an old black and white Amritsu for that stuff. And then, you know, the old IFR supercharged. They've been my go to tools, but man, that sounds like a slick little box, man. All in one nice package. The only thing I didn't like about those things was a slow refresh rate, tuning a duplexer there and tweak it and stop and wait for the screen to refresh. You know, that was always a pain in the ass, but that's what the IFR is for, you know.
Yeah, exactly. I've got a. I got a 1500. I take up for that kind of. I got 1200s. I usually take up all the time, obviously. Right. But I have some duplexer work, so my guy takes the 1500. I think I'm a freaking boat anchor. I'm sure you're familiar with them. But anyways, yeah, I had, I had one of the original DNAs and yeah, same thing, man, you gotta have. You gotta have a bottle of scotch and a lot of patience. So definitely one of those because of the slow upgrade rate. But this one here is much faster. I mean it's not like an IFR or an HP or you know, or something like that, but, you know, $30,000 piece of test equipment, but it's a fairly good compromise. It's fast enough to where it's not going to cause you to slam your head against the wall trying to do something. But yeah, it's pretty cool. Anyways, and I even. I saw a YouTube video, some guy was using it to actually characterize ferrite beans and how they would minimize noise or whatever on various frequencies and be. That would.
Pretty freaking cool. I was. Had a problem on 20 meters, and he took these ferrite beads and ran through, you know, just had an open wire from. From one port to the other port of the VNA and then. And then clamped on the. The ferrite bead one, one by one and showed the. The reduction in noise. That was pretty. That was pretty freaking cool. I'm gonna. I'm gonna mess with that some more, too. Oh, hell yeah. Yeah. Placement and size is everything, I guess. Yeah. Kind of like back in the old days, the beads on the string. You know what I mean? Yeah, I know what you mean. I know what you mean. I was getting some. I was having a problem a while ago on 75 meters. If I key up over, you know, maybe 500 watts or so, my freaking smoke injectors would go off and alert ADT and all kinds of crap like that. So I end up getting some ferrite getting up in the air.
Attic where that where the smoke detector was just, you know, right, right by my antenna feed. I tried rerouting my cables, you know and I'm using, I'm using really good LMR cables for the feed, you know, 100% shield and everything but still I was getting enough in there so I went up there and took some ferrite and wrapped the cables going to my smoke detector in the attic and it stopped. It knocked it out. But it took a lot of experimenting to get the right ferrite and whatever and right turns and everything else. So it'd be cool to be able to use the DNA to do that. So now I'll know moving forward the more eloquent way to make it happen or experiment with it before you have to get up in the attic and do it for real. Couldn't see hauling an 8921 up here. I had to do that to find air Ferris and something work. Oh crap. I.
Just about tails right by my exit. You got real noisy there for a little bit, too. Yeah, I know. I did all the experimenting down at the shack, and I went up in the attic with a fair. I wrapped it. It took. It took a couple of trips up and down the ladder to get it to do what I needed to, but it worked. So now I can run a. I can run full legal limit on 75 and not have to worry about it. How sweet it is. Yeah, it's weird. I got noisy. The repeater was still coming back to me. Okay. When. Underneath an overpass. So that's probably another reason to go visit the mountaintop, man. I keep the IFR and the, you know, loaded in back in case I get a chance to run up there. All right, man. I'm closing in on the gate here, so 73 and have a great day. Ralph and Mike, the other Mike, we were on local when we were in there, so thought I'd hop over and say hello.
And hello and Good morning. See WB68KV no longer mobile. All right, Mike. Yeah, thanks for saying good morning and same to you. Have a good day. M7TND Vegas clear.
Oh, yeah. N6 ntm returning.
Wow, 52 degrees already today. It is going to be nice. I see some high clouds, though. Yeah, well, we'll see what happens with the below clouds. 52 degrees high pressure, 30.2. Yeah, that ought to keep it sunny for the next couple of days. And then what appears to be five days of rain starting Sunday. Yep. Still temperature in the 50s and high 40s, huh? Not bad. I mean, for the lows. High 40s. Yep. Looks like 60 degrees. Dropping a little bit when it starts raining into the mid-50s.
D.
An6slm.
Kn6sln, kn6mgk saying good morning. Well, maybe you moved off frequency. This is kn6mgk saying good morning to kn6sln. I'll give it one more call. Good morning. Yeah, good morning, Steve. No, I was over here on this 20 meter, and this guy, he just came back to me about the time that you came on, if that makes any sense. Oh, it does? Yep. Okay. No problem. Well, yeah, get back to it. That sounds pretty fun. I was working 40 meters earlier, so I know how that can be. No, like I said,
And I'm not talking or anything like that. I just. I had two radios going at one time, in other words, and I was going, who do I answer? What do I do? Oh, yeah, that's why H F. I usually give H F a little precedent. But anyway, however you decide to do it is fine. Anyway, good morning to you. I don't know, I'm kind of hoping for a little bit of sunshine. I'm going to head up to paradise in a little bit here in Chico. I don't know whether we'll get some or not. It's been pretty much no for the past couple weeks, it seems like. Yeah, well, we've been going to Red Buff about every day. It would be super clear up here. Cold but clear. Then when we get around, oh, I'd say around Payton Creek, I think.
That's somewhere in the neighborhood, about a thousand foot, fifteen hundred foot. We were running to Rio Dental Falls. And is that what you guys got over there? Yes, that's pretty much what we've been having. But when you drop down into the valley floor last couple days, it's kind of lifted and been mostly cloudy, I would say, or the fog's up higher. So I think you're right about. Yeah, that level, between about 1500ft and 500ft, somewhere in there seems to be quite a bit of fog. Yeah, that's what we've been running into. But, you know, like I said, once you raise above it, what is paradise? How high is it? Well, the best I can give you, like at the property where wife and I owned the last GPS review I had Washington.
Ko 6 git signal report please. W6R H C repeater check 3.
14, 83ft to there, and some parts of it are a little bit less and then, but most of it's a little bit higher, like, you know, up to, up to, say, 2300ft. And then you start getting into Magalia. Yeah, well, you probably gonna run into sunshine when you get up there, you know, now we're, we're kicking around, just kicking this thing 20 meters. I got my 20 meter antenna up and, you know, playing with it. Then we're taking antennas down one at a time, getting ready to pull out. Okay. Yeah. Well, I was working the 40 meter band this morning because I got up about 4 in the morning, so I was pushing my signals into.
Into Asia again and doing pretty good. So got a couple of new countries. I got Laos and I got Hong Kong, and I did manage to get Cuba going the other direction, too. So I got three new countries this morning. Yeah, that's pretty good. Yeah, that's really good. How high do you have that, or does it make it? I guess it doesn't really make a difference how high, as long as you get it up. About 10, 20 foot. Yeah, I think it depends on what you're after, you know, for your propagation, but you probably want to be at least 20ft off the ground, and that's about where I'm at. It's kind of the one I'm using right now is a little bit of a slope, I would say, but closer to about 23, 24ft off the ground, I think. So.
Like that fairly flat top, so it's not inverted V and it's off center fed. So it gives me three bands. 40, 20 and 10. Yeah, I hear that. Yeah. Yeah, that's actually pretty good. Yeah. On this 20 meters where I have it stretched across my deck, it's probably. I'd say it's about 25ft off ground, something like that. 25, 30ft off the ground, the center of it. And then. But till the sun starts coming up, I don't get hardly anything. The propagation, I guess, come across. Yeah, that's kind of the way 20 meter works. And you know, you got it being it's being absorbed by the different layers of the ionosphere, not refracting the. I.
You kind of need that F1 layer to kind of separate a little bit more from the F2 layer. I think then you might be able to get some refraction. Yeah, well, like I said, it's pretty interesting. But no, that's all we're doing. We come up just hanging out, seeing who's on this. Yeah, we got. There is a. I'm going to say it's a radio club. Hell, I forget what the name of it is. It's called. Oh, I wish I wrote it down, but. Ole Miss. Yeah, there it is. Oh, man. Have you ever heard of that? Yeah, I think that's a net that comes on.
The old Mississippi or whatever. Yeah, heard of it. I probably even checked in once or twice before. But that was quite a couple years ago for sure. So anyway, and don't forget this weekend, starting probably Friday. Friday at like 4 o' clock or something like that, I think is probably when it starts is that 10 meter contest. So you might listen in and get a few contacts over the weekend. Yeah, yeah, on the 13th. That's right. I wrote down. But like you said, it starts on Friday. Yeah. Maybe I'll throw that 10 meter antenna up and see what I can do. But yeah, the Ole Miss is something about Sideman. I can't remember what he said. Said I thought it was Ole Mississippi or something like that. Like Ole Miss.
College and stuff like that. But it wasn't. It was had something to do with sideband associations or something like that. They have quite a few members and all that kind of good stuff out. Okay, cool. Yeah, I've got one antenna going right now that kind of east, west, and I've got one that's kind of more. I'm going to say north. What would that be? Probably northeast, southwest. I got two different antennas going. That will be 10 meters. So we'll see how that works out, I guess. I don't think I have time to put another one up. I was considering building a quick 10 meter vertical or something. I guess I could put up a vertical somehow. I may think about that. Just put a vertical up to see and run the coax through my.
Sliding door or something. Might look kind of funky, but never know. Sometimes you get. You get some stations on the vertical that you can't. You can't get on the horizontal. Yeah. Yeah. It all depends on how you come in again, but yeah, that was that. That'd be kind of fun. I'll get a hold of Josh back here local, make sure he knows about it. I think he does, but we'll see what happens. Anyway, I'll let you run. I'm going to get back over here, see what these. See if they're even on there. Yeah, he's still on there. And then I'll check back in later on. Okay, Talk to you later. K and 6, that's all I hear. All right. Nice hearing from you. Maybe we'll talk to you in a day or so. Kilo, November 6th. Mike, golf.
