We're going over and moved a couple pieces of furniture for our daughter. So left the house, got the truck, so got a radio in it. So I fired up. You know, I heard you in there minute before. Yeah, good deal. We did running around before and just kind of chilling for the night because I got these QSL cards from the bureau a couple weeks ago and just never got around to cataloging. So I figured I'd get them all inventory. A lot of stuff from GBN and China and a few things from Europe. Well, that's nice. It's awesome. So what's Cheryl doing today? Crafting or something like that. How was your Christmas? Pretty good. We went out. Like I said, we went out, ran some errands. We're just chilling out at Christmas, little camping, kind of subdued as usual. How about you? Oh, it's good. My in law just left this morning about 10 o'. Clock. So Julie and I have been on battery at 20 off caster angle on one wheel, cambering on another. And you know, it's a four wheel alignment. I'm like, how does it happen? You know, like car's not that old anyway. So I guess one of us has been doing some rough driving or potholes or who knows what. But Julie says she wanted dirt road for 20 miles. First I heard of that. Anyway. Dirt road for 20. Really? Subaru. Subaru, yeah. Okay. Yeah, there you go. You heard that? Yeah. Back when I was growing up in Wisconsin, Subarus were a really, really big deal there because they were all wheel drive. Right. And obviously we smell everything a lot. A lot of people had the Subaru they swore by. Julie says and she wants to know did they only keep them on pavement or did they ever take them off road? So she's looking for a license to do extreme, you know, Baja type behavior. No. You know, back in Wisconsin there wasn't really like off road stuff like you have here. There, there many people got it because. Because the smell at the ice. Right. Like I said, they were all wheel drive, pretty stable in winter driving conditions. That's what made it so attractive for everybody. Yeah, that's why I got her. She goes to snow and skiing and all that stuff a lot. So I want to make sure she does the best get around. Anyway, we ordered tires from Costco, we got some cross climate shoes, two sets of those Michelin top of the top of the line. And those are showing up any day for my vehicle. And then weeks later for one set coming from San Bernardino and the other one's coming from Illinois or something Indiana, I don't know. Anyway, different sizes though. Yeah, the tires on mine were my extent. Are pretty shot and so I'm just making sure it gets alignment all done first and all that. It's not, it's not extreme, excessive wear on either one of the vehicles as far as alignment issues, uneven wear like a toe angle or anything like that. But I just always like to make sure that everything's dialed in, you know. So anyway, I suspect that they're both out of alignment for different reasons. But. But anyway, no sense of buying expensive tires and wrecking them, right? Yeah, it's amazing how much freaking tires cost. Remember tight tires for my car a couple years ago they were of course what comes with it cost me almost $1,500. But the guys at discount were trying to talk me into buying a T different one. I'm like, you know, if the OEM put these on here, I'm not going to give it a couple hundred bucks. Might put these in, you know, Michelin or whatever the hell they were trying to sell me on. But I'm with you, man. Tires, tires are important. One of the areas you don't want to. You don't want to cinch on, that's for sure. Yeah. Anyway, probably look at my rear view mirror here. A lot of snow up at Mount Charlie looks pretty blanketed right now. I think that storm we got yesterday probably dropped some, but Angel's got some up there too, huh? Oh, actually angel has no pretty much nose now. We had some up there at angel and Potosi and looks like the last storm they went through must have been mainly rain because when I turned the cameras on this morning, there's every now and then there's a little tiny patch of snow here and there, but now it's absolutely clear. Highland Peak is hammered. But all the mountains here in our part of the area are actually currently accessible. Looks like talking about some, maybe some rain next week. But it's amazing how accessible the mountains are this late in the year. I think we're going to hit the beginning of 2026 with half an hour mountains except for Highland stuff and go by four by four. Yeah, I don't know, maybe that little portion of Mount Charleston that you can see in between the other peaks in the range in front. You're coming like up and road. It looked like it thinned out the other day a little bit you know today it looked just solid white so I don't you know just the top part of Mount Charleston. I don't know if it's possible that that part could have got snow but not usually I doubt it but maybe I don't know it just looked particularly white was after so maybe it's just a sun angle or something I don't know so yeah there's. We need some snow man the lake's going to be suffering. Yeah exactly well of course you know Colorado western slopes to eastern slopes of Colorado. I forgot what it was that the Rockies that go up Lake Mead but you know it's possible they're making snow up there too but no you can check I checked telemetry up there on Angel a little bit ago It's a buff raising so anyways all right man I'll get to it I'm finished doing up these QSL cards so have a good rest of your evening and thanks for the shout and 17. Hey, good afternoon. Kk 70 bi nr 17. Yeah. I heard you're buying some new tires and that. John and I think there's only two or maybe three major tire manufacturers in the world. They make all the tires for all in stores. So just be careful you don't get ripped off. Oh, yeah, I ordered them. They're already ordered. No, we got a good deal and good warranty and everything. So we buy most of our tires from Costco. I did buy some for my daughter from discount tires. So recently, actually, for Christmas, we got the tires and we had some big boxes. My son and I, we wrapped them up, wrapped up the tires, put them under the tree. We had a little Volkswagen, you know. She was quite happy because her tires were bad shape. So it was a big surprise to her. She got an alignment yesterday and got the tires put on and she was happy to climb. I'll bet for a kid to get new tires, it's kind of like that old shoulder they had there. That kid. I got some brand new secondhand recaps. Yeah. Coming up north. All right. I see there's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 counties with dense fog advisories. Holy cow. Yeah. Fog is. It's been a big deal for a while, but I don't have any fog here. Isn't that crazy? Yeah, well, you could be a little above it, right? I mean, aren't you. Aren't you a couple of hundred feet above the in elevation, above the 5 there? Yeah. Usually though, it hits really hard here and it's just incredible how much fog we have here. But I think, I think that it does quite often not be too high, not be. Not be too much farther up from the, like a couple hundred feet at the most from the valley. And I can look towards Lassen and see the fog bank over there. Oh, I see Running Springs just had a small earthquake. I guess it wasn't big enough to trigger anything here on Skywarn Plus. All right, I just, I heard you chime in there, so I thought I'd better answer you just goofing around here. Yeah, I have my systems telling me about earthquakes around the world above A four or four or above, I should say. And so I get, you know, I get notifications from everywhere in the world. If it's above a 6, though, it's only Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Humboldt County. Yeah. And I have, I have no way of setting the parameters there in Skywarn plus. And. Yeah, and if you're on, if you're on the supermom in there for 64689, just click on the USGS button there and it'll. It'll pop up everything that's current. Well, all my notifications come direct from the usgs and I can make it so there's a circle notification area. So I'm not sure how big my circle is in Humboldt, but that's a really important place to have notifications. And I don't think it goes like, even to Willow Creek on the 299. It doesn't go that far out. It doesn't even go 25 miles out from the center, which is probably really close to Eureka Arcata. But it picks up the earthquakes off the coast. And most all the earthquakes happen just off the coast of the mouth of the Eel River. Okay. Well, you may not know this, but you can go in there, you could set up a couple of areas. You don't have to stick with just one. You can, you can pick, I don't know, 4 or 5, 10. Probably pick as many as you want. You can make little 5 mile circles or 10 mile circles or whatever and a multitude of them. Yeah, I have circles in Humboldt, I have circles in the Bay Area, I have circles in the Los Angeles area that are above 6.0. As I said 6.0. And then I have a circle in Nepal that's above 6.0 and the rest of the world is below 4.0. That's what my notification system is for USGS. Ah, okay. Very good. All right, well, I'll let you go. He's been convinced that the raspberry PI popularity has gone down and he put out a notice that he's given up on all his updates on Linux systems. So not sure who's got his ear. Anyway, Raspberry PI, I think some of where TM4HDK was going with all that is that some of these mini computers you're buying now, 12 volt, you know, mini computers are solving a couple of things that like the Raspberry PI. Back then a lot of people were still including myself, plugging those into a 120 volt outlet. So things have changed pretty dramatically with these newer minicomputers too, where you can get a 12 volt one. And the price wise, I mean it used to be where those mini computers were real, real expensive for what you got right now, I think the price of the Raspberry PI 5 or whatever has still, still kind of, they've kind of converged. They're kind of getting closer together. So maybe that's why a police partner, he opted to start with these 12 volt mini computers. Well, for me and for Barry, the mini computer surge happened when the chip fiasco happened and you couldn't get, you couldn't get the chips to build the Raspberry PI. So people started going with the minicomputers because there were so many just laying on shelves all over the place. Now getting a 12 volt minicomputer is very, very hard to do. They don't advertise that they are 12 volt. They don't make a big deal about it. They say very little about that. So I've had to work very, very hard to find 12 volt mini computers. I have two now, one that's fairly powerful. It's got that 100 microprocessor which you were saying. Why did you go with that? Well, it's because it's a 12 volt computer. Then I've got one that I've had for a while. It's a little square box I don't know that much about, was the one that Barry went with. It's called the T8 Pro Tango 8 Pro Mini PC from Casper. Oh, it's got a Casper Lake N5095 in it. But it does say 12 volts right on the bottom. But when you look at the advertising, it doesn't say a thing about that. You have to really look at some of the fine details. And quite often you're not told, oh, the power supply that comes with it is 12 volts. It doesn't even tell you that. So you got to work really hard to find out when the how some way to find out that that detail that it actually runs on 12 volts. Yeah, sometimes they don't say it in the literature at all when you read like specifications even but on the pictures they'll show, they'll show it there. That's another thing. And also if you look at the whatever the main board is or the main chip set, I think certain ones run off of 12 volts and even if Bill it doesn't say to the picture or whatever, that's what you'll end up getting is you'll get the mini computer and It'll be for 12 volts even though it never set it anywhere just simply because they're using that architecture. We missed you on 80 meters, but did you hear the guys tarpon at all? Did you listen about that Lark set? You know anything about that? I checked in. You said you missed. I know I put a call out for you after the net and you didn't hear me so I turned it off. But I heard you fine and Rich acknowledged me, so I did, I did check in. So I'm not sure what you mean by missed me. Maybe just didn't hear me. But I only checked, I only turned on the frequency about five minutes to eight over. Yeah, somehow I, I, that was a brain fart because I did hear you check in and you were clear on 80. But I switched over to 40 and checked in on the, on the part of the net that was the only. The part that had the. QSD portion of the Marine net and checked in and got going on that told them what was going on here. Yeah, you checked into the part where you can only talk about certain subjects that Net Control particularly likes, even if they're ham radio related. That doesn't count. Being a little facetious, but maybe next time I get on I'm going to bring up, I'm going to bring up the QST section about all the aliens that people say that they see in South America. Well, one guy commented on that exact subject. He said if it's QST time, you can talk about anything you want. So apparently that got to him and he was. And you know who it was was Steve. So when Steve said something, people listen. Well, Steve Hershey was the Net control who told me that I couldn't talk about meshtastic. Remember case k7ofg. He's the one who said it's not the time for that, so whatever. So, okay, well, he changed his tune, you know, a couple nets later. Yeah, that's fine. Yeah, I don't hold nothing against him or whatever. I like Steve, so, you know that. But I just shut up, that's all. I'm not there very often enough to make any waves. I just, you know, I wish. I wish it would grow, I really do, because I think it has a service, even if there aren't as many sailors using radio as there used to be. But you never know. And I see the net shrinking. I mean, most times it has about a dozen, but I just remember, you know, like Tony, I remember Bruce, I remember Gene, of course, you know, I remember there might be one or two more. I seem to remember some that came out of Oregon. How about the other guy from Redding, Tug? These guys, I don't forget, but I don't recall anyone new coming on really that I could. Oh, maybe one of the gals, right? Since I've been a ham. Both the two, two gals, Tammy and Sarah, those are newer, newer people, but yeah, so seems like there's more dropping off that are coming on. So it's getting smaller. Well, you know, tug was like 90s. In his 90s. I was really shocked to hear what his age was. So he actually died, I believe, and, and some of them went away. Tony claimed he left because of. He told me he left because of politics. What he told everybody out there was he left because of personal, personal problems. So. But it was politics. And there was a guy over in Arizona who was pretty good who left for the same reason. But I think kind of stuff that's on and off, you can talk about this today, tomorrow you can't talk about it like you got from ofg. That's not helping things. Yeah, I forgot about that guy. He had a good, good sounding statement too. Like Dragoons, Arizona. Yeah, that's another one. Anyway. Yeah, I agree. Anyway, they need to be a little more, especially if they want younger people. I don't even know about younger. I mean, even, even me, 50, in my 50s is younger typically. But if they really want younger people involved, and there are, as you watch some of the YouTube channels, there are younger sailors out there, you know, I think they should be a little bit more open minded, you know, to things, especially in the QST section, not in the emergency section or whatever, but QST section. I mean, allow a little rag chew. I remember on that net right now, it seems like if you tune in at 10 after 8, it might already be over. And I remember it going till 8:30 at least sometimes over that. And you and I might talk on the frequency afterwards. Or at least there was some talk on the frequency afterwards. So the guy that I'm talking about From New Mexico, Alpha 5 Victorindi, I think it was Bruce, that guy, we used to talk to him.
But yeah, there's been a couple of silent keys out there, Gene being one of them as well. And yeah, it's UG also. So. By the way, that one from Rockland, the Elmer Height, you know, was watching the video yesterday from his son and he's silent key now too. I think it's Whiskey 6. What is it? LG. Lima Golf. Whiskey 6, Lima Golf. You may have seen a one or two of his YouTube's channels. Not as traffic maybe as some of the others, but he's kind of always been. He calls himself an Elmer, you know, So I remember the one video he did that I liked a lot and I was fairly young swr. First time I can remember somebody talking about swr, how we get over fixated with it sometimes. But so he brought out like the best antenna you could ever have with a 1 to 1 SWR across all the bands and it was a dummy load and six MGK. Well, yeah, another, another situation with that 40 meter marine, that is how, how. Golf was. He was just so discourteous to a lot of people, especially me for a while. And then he just started dropping out after, you know, trying to push people away. He started dropping out. Well, another guy who has been discourteous to me is Barry. And I'm thinking about to drop the hatchet with Barry. You know, just saying he says apologize to me, apologize after. He was the one that did the most discourteous thing I've had anybody do in a long time. So I'm thinking about just trying to drop the hatchet with him so that we can get back to talking about technical stuff. Because that's what I'm all about. And he's really good at technical stuff. He's a, you know, more of a digital person than an analog person. I saved his butt though. He thinks he's a great sailor, but he just blows it all over the place and it's a wonder he's still loading. And I saved his butt before he left and told him did you check your through holes? And he had ended up having to take the boat out of the water. Spent a lot of money, took it out of the water and put it up on land to repair all his through holes. So yeah, Barry's another subject for me. I like to, you know, get him to drop the hatchet. And the only way I can think I can do it is to try for me to tell him I'm dropping the hatchet. Yeah, I don't know the thing about that one. I don't know exactly what happened. But for me, it's tough to forget things. So if I've been mistreated, I usually give it three. Three, you know, I don't like to go three strikes, you know, kind of thing. I don't know if that's the right way to say it, but, you know, someone wrongs me one time, I might, of course I'm going to forgive it, you know, move on and try again and then maybe that'll be the next, you know, next time I leave a little time space in there, let things cool off and then move on. But I tell you one thing I don't do, if I don't think I'm wrong, I don't apologize. So I don't apologize until the person said, you know, I ain't sorry. So I'm not gonna, I don't want to pull the wool over someone's eyes, you know, so I might continue like with a tactful business type relationship, whatever. But you know, I think that you could still talk to Barry. I would think today with. About technical stuff and ham radio and net related topics and should be okay. But yeah, I mean, there might be other things to know, you know, so I don't know. I'll let you decide that one. But I know that we're not getting any younger. It's always good to, to try to keep things, try not to have a cancer Fester, let's say it that way. You know, if a cancer does develop, then try to eradicate it as soon as you can because they don't tend to get better over time. Yeah. So I don't have any advice in that regard. I'm not perfect, but that's the way it is. And so I don't try to go a third strike with people. And yeah, there's a few people out here that don't particularly like me. And that's fine. And he twisted everything around and claimed that I need to apologize to him, and on and on and on. So, you know, it wasn't exactly political at all what he was talking about. It was about Nui, which Nui is a kind of a crazy chunk of coral island. It's an island made out of coral out in the ocean with no harbor. So when people go there, they have to use just a floating anchor point. They can't put an anchor into the. Into the ocean because everything is way too deep for that. And the weather changes. Yeah, the other day I was doing a poda and he came on and he gave me the KD6XU. I'm like, oh, crap, that's Barry. So I said barry, question mark. And he came. He is really fast. He was probably 27 words a minute and I could understand like one word he said. There. There's a whole bunch of stuff there. Anyway, he gave me the Rst and then I gave the Rst back and thanked him and, you know, stuff like that moved on. But anyway, I was pretty happy to have gotten him in the log on cw. So that was pretty nice. I did copy at least that morning. Anyway. He was probably doing a PODA that day also, if I remember right. But anyway, I try to take the good with people if I can, you know, if it's. If it's at all plausible. So right now, that was what I was doing. I was warming up this bran muffin. See, my sister made these bran muffins because she knows I like bran muffins and they specifically are BlackBerry bran muffins. And I wanted to eat a couple. She gave them to me for Christmas and I want to eat a couple of them here and report back to her my thoughts. So I always tell her the truth. So far, they seem a bit moist. So I warmed them up in the toaster oven, not the microwave first. And they'd been sitting in there for probably about five minutes. And then I turned it back on and so it was time to just get them out. And yeah, they're much better in the toaster oven than warming them up in a microwave for sure. So that's my thoughts and I'm drinking the rest of my coffee. Yep, I had enough of microwave it. So, yeah, I guess I've been on long enough. Yeah, your turn. KN6MGK. Well, 40 is so strange. I don't know if it's actually 40 meters or if it was the fact that a whole ton of people had jsa. Call on last night, but last night I see I have this one way of this method of putting out beacon calls, you know, because what happens with a beacon on JSA call is a station replies to you if they're on, on your frequency on JSA call. So they reply to you with a beacon. Now that beacon may be down in a very, very narrow area below 1000 Hz. So 1000 to like maybe 250 Hz offset with you know, of course the continuous tone signals that you get from Vera that are very similar to you get from JSA call. I mean very similar to FP8. And I got with my system I got 18 comebacks. That's the most I've ever gotten. This morning I've only gotten 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Seven comebacks. So I don't know if it's the number of stations that are on or it's combination of that plus propagation or I don't know. Yeah, it could also be people turning on and off the heartbeat acknowledgements. So I don't know. Yeah, I'm not sure what to think about that. You did ask a question about vara, right? So I do think that that's something I have to start getting involved in. Figuring out how VARA works is not word called pat. Right. That I think is another program I need to pay attention to and start doing some win link. So. And I really need to work on the FL digi thing too now. So I've got my little portable radio out and working that I hit metal but it's the 857D. That's what I've been using here late lately and getting the digital. I've got the digital back going again on it. So it's fairly easy to do the digital stuff on say the FT710 but the A50 not. It wasn't. It wasn't. It doesn't have a built in sound card so you have to use a. Like that digirig. And so there's a little bit of a. It throws a little wrench in things in terms of how it operates on the additional one so but got it going. I did get in a tuner but I have not tried the tuner yet. So we'll see how that goes. And a couple more things to talk about. Mineral, California. I was seeing that they got a bunch of snow around Christmas so they had a nice snowy Christmas over in Mineral. Real pretty too. See, I mean just like when I drive through a mineral before I might wait for another storm system Coming in that maybe me and a friend will take a ride out that way. We usually do about once a year go out to Lassen and stuff when there's snow around and he likes to take some pictures of birds and other things he likes out that way. So maybe I'll take a ride with him again and enjoy that. But anyway, yeah, that's about it really. Back to you. Yeah, somebody was trying very very hard. I don't know if it's maybe that Columbia machine or something but they were trying very very hard to get through. Was there somebody else out there who would be courteous enough to give us your call? Anybody who's into Linux and Raspberry PI's needs to talk to KM4ARCK. And whether you like Raspberry PIs or not, I think we need to tell him hey, you know, don't forget about Raspberry. About. Don't forget about Linux because he's making a mistake there. Well, I'd have to look up when he revitalized all that because he was calling it the PI build. Remember he changed it to 73 Linux. So as far as I know he was still keeping up the 70s Linux. So they changed the verbiage of it a bit. That was what that was all other than you know, obviously changing scripts and updating some of the programs and things like that that he had within it. But there's another guy over here, I'll have to look up his call sign but he's out of that Auburn Group W6ek that Bob K6UDA came out of. It's like LWY or something like that. He offers, he offers up more stuff for Raspberry PI's also right. I think they call it the Ham Pie. Anyway, so same type of a deal where it has all the different programs and everything else that you can want to use on a Raspberry PI. So Anyway, another, another YouTube channel guy. Well what, what's his channel name? Yeah, it has to do with his call sign radio and I'd have to look it up so I don't remember off the top of my head. But like YouTube, I hate watching all those commercials, but I don't ever see it in myself. As to paying the extortion fee. So if somebody else paid for the extortion fee, you know, that'd be different. That'd be a good Christmas gift. Here you go. They always bug me, and they always come on right when I'm really wanting to see a particular part of it. And when it's on my tv, sometimes I kick it back in my chair. I can't just kick skip them real fast. I mean, it sometimes makes me wait 30 seconds before it gives me the skip option on the tv. On the phone, it may be four or five seconds. Not that big a deal. But sometimes I don't want to watch a good video on my phone. I want to watch it on the tv. Well, I wish that John would have invested in a little cheap vertical or something or some of those parts to make it vertical. I discussed that with him a couple times, we did on the radio and so forth. So I may have even sent him an email before about it. But we still went with the dipoles too. And I think it really comes down to he seems to go off of the salespeople's recommendations, you know, like a ham radio outlet or wherever he is, I don't know. Versus maybe people who operate all the time. It just doesn't make sense. Like I bet you if you ask K7 ofg about POTA, what antennas he uses and so on, I think you already have in some regards and, and these are some of the same antennas that we're talking about, I'm sure of it. Incident half wave, small verticals, you know, those are easy to set up. I mean like I wouldn't want to have to take my antenna down all the time. So setting up a quick vertical, you could do that just about anywhere. Can 6 MGK? Yeah. Anybody else out there real quick? Well, I'll tell you the. As long as the fuses don't blow up at 36 things getting a ton of solar. I got so much solar yesterday it was, you know, this rover, I've got it. When it gets anything above 30amps it starts to heat up on those particular terminals. So I don't know what to think about that. I think they under built this a little bit on the PC terminals that they use. Almost like it was designed for 24, not 12. But anyway, yeah, I'm hooked up with L YW radio. It seems like I used to watch his stuff quite a bit. And I'm gonna go back to him because I don't care what you say, I mean I'm terrible with Linux but man, everything sure does run a lot better on it, including JSA call. JSA calls will die on a Windows machine about once a day and you almost have to restart it. So yeah, I'm with you on Linux, that's for sure. I think they could do a lot more to improve Linux but it does work better. Well, with Linux there's so many different operating systems and you probably haven't tried many of them. I think with the KM4 Ack build that's like a Debian based type operating system, the one I gave you a long time ago laptop had mint on it which was more of a Ubuntu based system. So a lot of people like that particular operating system called Linux Mint. Right now I'm using one called Lite Linux and I'm rather liking it but it's kind of loosely based on Debian as well. So there's just a few different options out there. There's a few people going to Zorin which they're trying to mimic some of the Windows stuff. I think that's Zorin and there's POP Linux, a few that people are starting to try and mess with and so forth. So I don't know. I've been finding this Linux light to be working fine on older systems like this one right here. My mom had this touchscreen and have like Windows what it have on it? Windows 8 or Windows Vista? I can't remember what was on it now. Something like that old thing. And with this Linux Lite I could even use the touchscreen and so forth. So I don't but I could anyway. It happens to be working okay on Linux Lite. I've got a bunch of computers that I can put the heaviest, most heavy duty Linux system on and they'll work fines that have crashed with Windows 10 and 11 and I don't need another Windows 10 or 11 system. So I'm going to put the most powerful Linux system I can put on these. It'll be 64 bit and so forth but. And I've got couple of 12 volt computers. You know, you talk about partitioning and all that. Well, there's no problem with partitioning. It works great. It doesn't take up any resources other than just a little bit of the memory of the hard drive or the solid state hard drive, whatever you want to call it. Do you hear a key up when I'm on? Do you hear any key up? No, it's clear as a bell. And well, I've partitioned drives before but my drives are always kind of small so it might have only been a couple hundred gigs or something. And so I'll go okay, I'll take 100 gigs for Windows, 100 for Linux, you know. And then later on I regret it because especially on Windows of if I'm trying to make it a dual boost system, you know, there's basically almost no storage for anything and you keep getting warnings coming up and the Linux side tends to work a little bit better for a little bit longer but again it's just dividing the resources on the hard drive. So I don't know something else to play with. It's kind of fun is to put an operating system on a, like an SD card or a flash drive of Some sort so you can walk up to. What's fun about that is you can walk up to any computer, put it in boot mode and boot off of your stick or SD card or whatever, and then basically still be operating your own computer. You know what you're familiar with, getting your emails, whatever it is you want to do on that other computer. But you're using your own Linux operating system that you're used to and so forth. And you can do a lot of things on that computer just that way that you couldn't do due to like say someone's window. And then you. Then when you take it all out and everything, you go away and it all goes back to the weight at the end of the. Whichever architecture it was, whichever operating system was on it, like let's say it was Windows or whatever. So it's kind of fun to mess around with some of that stuff. You can really mess up someone's computer that way too. In other words, if you were trying to be evil about things, if you walked in there with your bootable disk, whatever, bootable drive, and then you went in there and started messing with their hard drive, like, you know, wiping it clear, and you pull out your stick and leave, that's gone. That's pretty evil. But it is possible. Yeah, I don't even think about stuff like that. But I wanted to mention that LWI has been. I've been subscribed to him for a while and the way to get to me, somebody like me would have been to say, oh, he's the guy that plays his guitar on his ham radio videos. And I would have gone, oh, really? He's the handpie guy. Oh, I didn't know that. Now he's got a lot of great videos on right now that I'm going to watch. One of them is messing with the ISS and it's a short and it looks like he's got a yaesu, the FT something FT1 looks like. And he's traveling, apparently traveling internationally right now a little bit, or has, because he was in a place called Bratka Lava, wherever that is. Well, I can see it's past nine now, so I'll probably go and see about waking up the wife here in a minute, but let me reset. Sorry about that. Had a little frog in my throat. Anyway, I'd be remiss to not mention Meshtastic at least once in this conversation because Bottas traffic, one of my friends went to the Bay Area, as I did as well, but he went more a little bit further south than me anyway. And he put out his messtastic and he built his nodes up to like 337 nodes. He had lots of traffic going on around there for sure. But over here we're getting traffic from the Sutter Buttes. And also the Butte County Search and Rescue has several nodes up and they've put out some recent traffic saying that when the weather gets better and the holidays are over, they're putting out a few more nodes and trying to improve the connection into what they call bay mesh. So they're building into the nodes mesh system a lot more. And also another traffic came across from the Mount Baca group there over there. And Mount Baca is saying that they're going to change over to medium fast, which is the same as what we got right now over here in Chico. See if they can connect in better with the. With the groups up north here too. So anyway, I think it's. It's an interesting play on things. I know you say it's pretty tough over your way, but if there's any way at all, like even building a small little yagi or something or putting out one for 913 MHz roughly, that. That would be. That'd be very interesting if you could get into the mesh as well. Can 6mgk. Well, if I go with a. A Laura, it will be a ESP32 type Lora next chassis system. Have you had people talking much about. Well, none of us have really built our own other than I know maybe this guy named Robert and myself bought the parts to this kit for what they call Lily Go Lily Go T Beam Lily Go T Beams. And don't recall if I bought it on the AliExpress, which is possible or I think it was Banggood whatever back in the day, you know, very cheap, like 20 bucks back then. But yeah, it took, you know, 10 days or whatever to get. But those were boards and they had OLED screens you had to solder them on. And so that was. That's what you had to do. But I think a lot of what you're talking about is like an Arduino, right? And so I think that's the main board that people are using now. So anyway. But nobody. We haven't had like a build where we're all building them together or something like that from parts mostly by these kits like from Meshnology or you know, off of Rockland, which is the USA distributor for. For what's that? Like the Wish Mesh tag, which is a tag, a tracker. And they also have the Rak rack stuff, which is really efficient. And I think they have those particular boards. Well, Ally Express has a pre built Lily Go that works on a lot of different frequencies with a BLE GPS O L E T. So I don't know if that means it has GPS on. It must mean that. And they want 3127 and it's different than a lot of the others. And I don't even see a L. Oh yeah, I see it. Okay. They're using this little square LED display that I have built things that use those and they just plug in, you know, they're just like any other display that you can get online. And they plug in to the pins on the Lily Gold. And so I built. What I built was Dawn ND16's beautiful. RF RF generator. This digital and it's controlled by a Raspberry. I think it was a Raspberry PI or was it an Arduino? Anyway, I do both Raspberry PI and Arduino somewhat and I can do pretty much anything I need to do. I don't program on either with either system. I'm not, not up on the programming of either one. But just enough, just enough that if I. There's so many scripts that are already written in Arduino I can. I don't need to be a programmer because too many people are out there who are programmers. Make their scripts available and then if you want to do something with. With one of theirs and you know, just a little bit, you can change it to do what you want. Anyway, they have the not soldered or the soldered one. That's interesting. And there's only $2 difference between the two of them for the lily. Go, Billy, go. TTGO meshtastic T beam v. 1.2 ESP32 lora development. Yeah, a lot of sounds like what I have in my hand right here. I was unpackaging it from what I put it in, but I got it unsoldered back in the day and I didn't mind doing that. You'd probably be okay with doing that too. Soldering the board on, soldering the OLED onto it. But it's probably worth the 2 bucks extra to have them do it. But nevertheless, you know, I know you're capable. So anyway, I just took a picture of it. I'm going to send that over to you on your cell phone. Well, from what I'm hearing about this one, it must already have Meshtastic programmed in. But I'm reading the details in the description right now. Well, that's likely. Yeah, it's likely. I have an old version and you really want to get the newest version, like 2.7.15 stable. So every device I've gotten so far has been like, old. So, yeah, you'll have to reflash it, which takes about, I don't know, five minutes. It's simple. But yeah, you just go to a website, it's called flasher.meshtastic.org and read the directions and do it and it becomes simple. Like five minutes. Yeah. They're saying you can run it for two days on a 18650. And the larger board gives ample breathing room for the ESP32 S3 Lora radio and GPS. I don't know if that means it doesn't have the GPS on it. I don't know. I haven't looked at their actual description from this version at. At AliExpress, though, yet. What happened here? Make it go away. Oh, darn it. I've got to find it again. I found it, But actually in the description it says or not description, but it's a title that says a bunch of different frequencies and then it says it only sells it at 915 MHz. Is 915 usable? Well, yeah. 915 megahertz is what you want for the United States. So that's what you want. This one here, I think is the one that I have, is a couple different. It'll do the 868 or something too. I think it sits right on there. And that's probably the same one that you would get there, but you used to be able to order. They had in AliExpress, I remember they had multiple different units you could buy and there were different frequency ranges. So say you wanted one in the 70 centimeter, because you're a ham, you could legally use it in that spectrum. So you might have to put it in HAM mode. I don't recommend recall on that one, which means that nothing would be encrypted at that point. So to use it in the United States, but that is legally, you're supposed to do at least. Well, it's interesting, the site where I found.

Found the, the first site at Ally Express where I found it. You go down below into the description and. And you find a bunch of different things talking about it and then talks about the one with GPS on it and stuff like that. And it says there's very little. It says kick and you can hardly tell. It's. It's a, It's a link place to click on. I clicked on it and the price went down. And it says, Lily go ttgo meshtastic t beam v 1.2 esp32 development board. Blah, blah, blah. Same thing. But this is. It's the one supposedly that has the GPS in it. I guess. I don't know. Now I need to look at the, at the description details on this one. And it's 2988. Yeah, well, you don't really need a GPS on all of them. You know, it's probably good to have at least one that has the GPS on it. And if you, it depends. If you're trying to use it more like APRS or something where you want to be trackable and you want to have your location data be sending out packets, then definitely you want the gps, right. So. But let's say that you have one at home and you just have it up in the air and it's not moving. Well, you don't, you don't necessarily need that one to have the GPS on it, but it's still kind of nice, I guess. But you can just set your position data fixed and put in the coordinates. Well, see, when you were driving around with yours, you might have wanted that. Yeah. Trouble is, we haven't. We haven't gotten them to work that good in that fashion. Nothing like eprs right now. We've been looking forward to figuring that part of it out. I think you almost have to be like TM4 acknowledge number one and have your antenna on the outside of the vehicle. You know, if you're going to be driving around, you know, and nobody's doing that right now. I mean, we have these handheld devices, trackers and such. Put them in your backpack, you know, you can hang them off your electric bike as you're driving, you know, that type of thing. But they're so tiny, they put out 100 milliwatts and, you know, so forth that, you know, you being seen by the satellites isn't quite as good as something like EPRS where you can put out 50 watts, right? Oh, of course, yeah. You know, you got to be. You got to be able to do like a ham radio operator. Do A radio guys do because you're talking about Radeon radio radio here. And of course you need a mag mount 900 MHz antenna on top of your car. In other words, take everything you've learned about ham radio and apply it to mesh task to. Yeah, there's some that are doing that. In fact, one guy in Paradise, I think I may have sent you a video of him testing a couple of antennas. But his homemade collinear antenna is outperforming everything else. It's just not weather resistant or weatherproof. That's been the problem with that one. But he'll put it inside of his house next to it window and it operates better than the thing that he bought that he put on top of on top of his house out above the house. So it's pretty funny. Yeah, cleared my throat again. Anyway, I did send you some pictures of the Laura TT Go that I have that I bought several years ago at this point. And you know, showing you like the little board couple, the big chips on the board and behind it shows you the GPS little ceramic antenna thing. So now the one thing about these T beams is they only put out like 100 milliwatts or whatever. But. But the other ones that we're buying like the Hellcat V4s now those things are putting out closer to 800 or 900 milliwatts right from the factory. And we've measured that with the device that Dan has in paradise, so he knows that it's doing it. And the other thing I'll say is like a lot of these things that you buy from China, the antennas that come with them, basically garbage. They work, but they don't work very good. So either buying another antenna is smart or building your own can 6 MGK. Well, you know, it's interesting. Every time I get to the Lora that I would be interested in has all the GPS in it and all that other stuff, I might as well get one with everything. It changes. It changes the ball. It changes the ball. What do they call it? The goal line moves or whatever. However they describe that sports. So they change it. Well now Ally Express says if I want the Lily Go and helium T Beam V1 point ESP32 Lora Development Board with Lora Wham Wan Whiskey Alpha November 866868 to 915 wireless module GPS Neo 6M, whatever that means. And a 16850 battery holder already on it. And you have to solder the. I don't see the little screen that I was talking about on there at all. So you have to add that. But if you want that, then that's going to be 59, 18. So yeah, they keep moving. This is LA Express and they keep moving the gold goal post. Yeah. So that's more the price range that you. I've been seeing lately. But you know, you say you'd have to. I guess you would have to use discernment as to what you're actually getting. So, you know, if you want the whole complete unit or someone that is selling you parts, you know, and sometimes they are distilling parts because that's what people want. Right. They're building their own things. You don't have to. You can figure out your own source. You have different kinds of batteries and so forth now. But anyway, most everyone has left these T beams aside and have all gone to something else. Like the HealthTech V4s or the Rack RAK systems. Different ones. And the reasons why is because like say this one that Pat just bought, you know, you can right from the device itself you can send messages. You don't have to rely on your cell phone as the app. You still can use your cell phone app and probably most people will. But there's a little joystick control you can set up like a little QWERTY keyboard that comes up that you can see on the display and you can type in messages like canned messages. And so that way you can quickly send a canned message to somebody right from the device. You don't have to get onto your cell phone and use the app again. Most people are using the app still, but it just gives you another option. The questions that Ally Express puts on there are absolutely crazy. It says, is this a weapon? The first question is, is this a weapon with Bluetooth speakers? A weapon against pills with Bluetooth speakers. Now that's been translated of course from Chinese, so I don't know what they're talking about. If you program it to be a cat, what is it for? Blah, blah, blah. How much current does it take. Run six hours on a fully charged 18650. So that's the one with everything in it that's not running as long with a. With a 18650. That's interesting that they run on the 1865 volt because the 18650 is 3.7 volts and most of these devices are five. You charge them with five volts, but no, they are. They're all that I know of are running off of either that or the lithium ion Batteries like These other Heltech V4s are a lot of people using like a 3000 milliamp hour lithium ion battery. It's real thin. That's how they can make them put them in these real thin devices. Well, 1-8650 is a lithium ion 3.7 volt round battery that probably goes up to about 4.2 top, top voltage, maybe a little higher. And I've got a ton of them. But yeah, I can see why they want the flat cell phone type battery. Yeah. And many of them come with like 1000 milliamp hours, which is nowhere near enough, but depends on what you're trying to do with it, I guess. So the one advantage that the Haltech V4 has is it has a solar input. So although the Heltech V4 does use a lot more power, that's why they're not quite as efficient. But they do put out a little bit more wattage. They put out like, you know, 800 or 900 milliwatts, but they have a solar input in there as well. So if a person had a small panel, like a 10 watt panel or something like that, they could, they could actually run the lead that goes down right into the board. And they make special panels for that. Like, you know, like the same ones you would use to charge those. Some people are doing that, by the way, like the pathway lights and stuff that run off of solar. Those little small boards, cameras, like little cameras and stuff. They'll use those board and they'll run those right into the, into the Arduino or Lora board, whatever it is that they're using into that input. So that's the one advantage to Heltech beforehand. Now Heltech, what is that? Well, it's another Lora communication board. I don't know if it's in our dwindler or not. I mean, I'd have to look, you know, send you, send you links to that or something, I guess. But mine are already built, so I'm not taking them apart. I say built and I should be putting air quotes over that because it's really assembled. Well, are both of these Arduino based? I don't know. Yeah, I don't know what to say about that. I've had some health tech before and see what it is. I don't know. I've never seen an Arduino board. Really? I think so. Well, I do think so. Just like there's some people buying other products on Temu also. They're selling some stuff on Temu I think it's the same list Milligo company but and those boards are probably work too. They do all call them some sort of a development board. So and some of them come pre flashed with meshtastic on them but usually it'd be an old version. You know. Any event I can send you something on the Heltech V4, but I need to get off here now for a bit, go wake up the wife and use the restroom and stuff. Yeah, well I'm hearing pave fog on it and I've got a fair amount of deviation. I'm on a portable advertised as a 10 watt radio. I've measure 6 watts. It's a rat tail and I'm listening on an FT5 VR. Yay station. Yeah, maybe it's my imagination, it just sounds a little scratchier in the moment. Well, it could actually have a little too much deviation for this machine, but has a lot, has money. And like I said, I'm listening on an FT5VR that's about 27ft away from me. There's so many wacky things about that radio. I can't get the volume just turned down now, you name it. It's got, it's got every dingy thing going on that can happen to a radio. I hate the MT5VR. I really hate it. But I can't get it to work on fusion so. And I am able to prepare to receive. Actually it can make it down to 30, But I'm transmitting on a radio with probably about 6 watts and I'm looking right at the antennas over there which have ton of snow on them. Bali's got a ton of snow on it.
So the question is, is 25 hearing 30 the link? I don't think so. I went over the 20 and I got the typical maybe lower lower on link as a lower tone that usually signifies that it's not receiving the link. All right, I'm in a bad spot here so I'll just have to go back to listening for now. Okay, well it could be a command up there. Be worth investigating. All right, it's receiving link though, just fine. No, it's not receiving. Well if it's receiving link, it's not. I don't know what the system, what system 13 is up to and doing right now. I'm in the pickup truck right now and I've got a good dry bound on the outside in the place it's supposed to be. Okay. Yeah, it's definitely a big improvement.
