Speaker A: Kk6vzd mobile.
Speaker B: WP6AXM repeater. KK6SYV mobile. Good evening, Chris.
Speaker A: Good evening. Good evening. Looks like you've got a nice pleasant drive home.
Speaker B: Yep, yep, it's been fine. Made one stop and now I'm on the rest of the way.
Speaker A: Special in your life?
Speaker B: Nothing spectacular. Just been working at reloading.
Speaker A: Reloading, eh? Multiple difference or just basically one caliber?
Speaker B: Just concentrating on my rifle right now. So. 6.5 Creedmore.
Speaker A: All right. That certainly has become a popular load. What's the advantages to it?
Speaker B: It's supposed to be a relatively flat shooting, inconsistent round for the velocities, capable of the, you know, weight of the bullet.
Speaker A: Okay. Yeah, I know my son's father in
Speaker B: law,
Speaker A: I guess he does. I'm not sure whether he does competition shooting, but. So I think that's his round of choice.
Speaker B: Yeah, for general, you know, people, general use. It's a pretty good round. It's not overly expensive and it's readily available. Or you got. Some of the other rounds are a little better for the ballistics, but they cost quite a bit more. Yeah.
Speaker A: Gotta say, I think it looks a little weird because it's got that big fat case compared to the size of the bullet itself.
Speaker B: Yeah, a little bit. But it's, I mean there's other ones that are even more extreme in that sense they call wildcat rounds, but they're just going for extreme velocities and then working towards back towards consistency from there, I guess you'd say.
Speaker A: Yeah. So what caliber does that equate to a 6.5 millimeter? Equates to what, 20, what 28 caliber or something like that. 27.
Speaker B: Yeah. Somewhere close to that range. If there's other rounds that are in that vicinity. It's just that, you know, that particular round they've done with it, that metric reading instead of a caliber reading.
Speaker A: Yeah, but that's somewhere in, around the 270 range.
Speaker B: Yes.
Speaker A: Okay.
Speaker B: Yeah, I,
Speaker A: I can't say that I know anything much about it because. Well, I've got a couple rifles with their standard calibers. I've got a 7 6, 308 and a 30. 30 and a 5. 5, 6.
Speaker B: Yeah. The first two are they classify in the 30 caliber range, you know, and then the 6.5 is a little bit smaller I believe than that.
Speaker A: Where do you go when you go shooting?
Speaker B: Well, locally, easiest place is Oroville or I've been, you know, if I just need to shoot a hundred yard range for, you know, testing bullets or something like that, I Go to the, the Yuba City range over there by the, by the levee.
Speaker A: Yeah, one of these days I'll actually have to take mine out and Saucy has just been shooting rounds off. I actually have to sight them in.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's where that Yuba City range is kind of nice because it's a little protected from the wind and you know, they've already done all your measurements and have target stands that drop right in at 100 yards. So if you're sighting in at 100 yards, it's relatively easy. And they're only like a few dollars for a rain state.
Speaker A: Yeah, well last time I checked it was if you're not a, if you're not a member, it's like 10 bucks, right?
Speaker B: Yeah, something like that. 10 or $12 for a non member.
Speaker A: Well, a very, very, very long time ago I was a member and went out shooting here a few times but didn't do it enough to warrant being a member all the time. But I did take advantage of the CMP shoot day when they pull out the Garand.
Speaker B: When everybody brings out their M1 and all have a competition essentially.
Speaker A: Well, the club itself owns Garand, so they bring it out to give people the opportunity to shoot them. Yeah, it was kind of fun.
Speaker B: That gives you a little challenge of using, you know, an old school rifle with open sights or peep sights, whatever they have on them and shooting at that hundred yard range with it.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, the attraction to me was gee, I get to shoot an honest to goodness rifle that was used during the war.
Speaker B: Exactly. Military rifle used during service.
Speaker A: Well, you are really close at Oroville range, aren't you?
Speaker B: Yeah, it's about 15 minutes or so from my house to the Oroville range. And if I want to shoot long distance there is at least out to 650.
Speaker A: Yeah, I would. I've always thought that I'd go down to that, that range just north of Lincoln and go shoot there. I've never made it.
Speaker B: Yeah, it's a decent range. They're only 300, but it's a controlled, you know, range with range masters and all that stuff. So if you're worried about that kind of stuff, if you're there by yourself, they're there to help you.
Speaker A: Yeah, my son took me, I think it was last year. We went to a range down by Rancho Seco and they've got quite a set up down there.
Speaker B: I'm not sure if that's what they call the Ione range or near Ione, whatever.
Speaker A: Probably Island's not far from Rancho Seco. So that's probably it.
Speaker B: That's probably in between the two. But yeah, their range has out to a thousand yards. But I think their range is backwards to me. But whatever, that's the way they run their range.
Speaker A: Well, they got quite a list of rules you got to abide by too, which you know, it's good. It keeps it safe for everybody and it keeps the range nice.
Speaker B: Yeah, true, but they're just their thousand yard range and you got to qualify to go onto it first. Keeps everybody safe. But like I said, they run it feet backwards. So they go out and they shoot at 100 yards or 200 yards first and their targets don't move. You move, but you shoot. Everybody says okay, let's move. And then they move back to the berm that they're shooting out for 300 yards and then everybody moves back to the 400 yard and then the 500 yards. Instead of having targets at several different ranges or you just pick the range that you would like to shoot.
Speaker A: Well, yes, that sounds a bit odd. Oh well, hey, I've just pulled into the driver driveway and I've got to get back out again in about half an hour. So I'm going to go inside and get what relaxed patient I can before I go ease again. I'll talk to you later. Have A great evening.

Speaker A: Well, thank you very much, James, and thanks for being our net control for the VHF portion tonight. Hello to everyone on the net. This is Jay, November 6th Sierra Alpha Charlie, your suction manager. And there's just a couple of announcements. The first one is the HF Net. We're going to be on three eight eight three kilohertz, lower sideband. Now that's to stay away from a CUSA that's going on not too far away. So we'll be at 3,883 just to make sure we give them enough space also this year, welcome to 2026. Happy New Year. There's a couple of big things going on at the arrl. The first is this is the year of the club and there are already some club competitions going on for newsletters and websites and the like. But there will be more things about the clubs and the highlighting of clubs as we go forward. So stay tuned for that. Let me let the repeater drop. All right, and the next announcement is there is a worked All States contest that is going on all year long. It's America 250. This will be the 250th birthday of our signing of the Declaration of Independence. And to help celebrate that, there is a work to all states for 2026 contest that is already underway. It starts with just your standard work to all states in 2026, but there are three special endorsements you can earn as well. One is for contacting the W1AW portable stations in each of the states and that's going to be on a schedule throughout the year. Year. Each state's going to get a couple of weeks throughout the year and if you make contact with all of those portable stations for each state then you'll get a special endorsement. There's another endorsement for contacting clubs in every single state. There's another endorsement for triple play. Worked all states for CW phone and digital. Let me let the repeater drop again. Alright. So there's a lot going on for clubs and just for all of us amateur radio operators in general. General. And you can stay up to date a couple of different ways. You can of course go to arrl.org and find out the latest news. But we also like to republish those on our section website arrsac valley.org so feel free to check that website often. All right James, back to you. Thanks very much. This is N6SEC.
Speaker B: Thank you Jay. This is Alpha Echo 6 check Juliet Golf. Are there any questions or additional announcements before we close the net? Thanks to everybody who checked in tonight. This is James Alpha Echo Six Juliet Golf affiliated club coordinator and assistant section manager for the Sacramento Valley ARRL 73 and have a good evening.

Speaker A: Did someone call out? I don't know. I thought I heard something. Kn6mgk. Flam chico. Okay, yeah, that's very possible. I don't know. Yep. But you're out here, that's what counts. You sound real good. Been having some fun with some meshtastic stuff lately. I've been really getting stuff going up around paradise and stuff. Well, it's a lot less civic to you when you start figuring things out, but yeah, no, you need other. Other stuff. I got about 140 miles today on it. You're going to have plenty of issues just trying to run 1.2 gigahertz. Everybody I know, like the guys from paradise and Magalia, at least three guys up there, there's Clarence in courting. All of them said that it really just wasn't worth much for them. End of it. Kn6mtk. I'm not hearing you. No, I didn't. My phone's in the other room, so. Yeah, no, whatever you said didn't go through. Maybe you took your finger off the pickle. Oh, yeah. There was no carrier, no sound, nothing. Anyway, I was talking about 1.2 GHz. It's enough of that, I guess. But on the, on the mesh stuff, at least around here in Chico and stuff, we do have the search and rescue group and they put stuff around, so. But Chico still is quite a ways away from having really a good mesh and I would say paradise and at least the lower part of Magalia is not too far away. Maybe a half a dozen more nodes around. Yeah, I think we're going to build a couple more. I think we're up to like 17 or 18 now. That was this first around. Yeah, well, I don't see him on any mode, so. I mean, we have three maps we look at now and there's nothing over there in the west side that I could see in the mountains. It would be appearing on Long Fast on the maps, if he had the settings right. It's not on the maps. Maybe he doesn't want it to be on the maps and that's fine too. But still, then we'd be able to see it from the notes and I mean, I could go over there and change my mode to Long Fast. I mean, we've done that in Magalia, by the way. Just on the last weekend we changed over to. I didn't. A couple of guys changed over to Long Fast for a while to test it out, so. And they didn't see anything. Yeah, we seem to be having about two meetings A week, Wednesdays and Fridays, Pretty big hunt. Talk for hours about it. So I don't know, coffee a couple times a week and stuff like that. So it's been an ongoing thing for a month. And you will rack your brain, that's for sure. The apps, they're different for Apple than they are for Android and so on. I mean, the settings have to be just right. I'd like to know what Unity has too, because right now we're having the best success with the Heltech. The Heltech V4s, they almost put out one watt, so like somewhere around 800 milliwatts. So versus, like I put one of these solar seed nodes up on my roof and I think they're only putting out like say 140 milliwatt. Yeah. Rockland doesn't mean anything. That's the company. Right. So they didn't make it. It's the, the node, the development board inside. But I'll look it up. It's just a little to go. It's just probably just. What do you call it? ES32 or whatever. One of those. Just like my little T deck. Not T deck, my. My T beam or whatever. Esp32 chip or something. And yeah, they're not. They're. They tend to be a little bit more efficient. And I've already told you about those little antennas. They're not very good, as you can imagine. You can buy the ones from Amazon that are 20 bucks for two of them. They're way better.
Speaker B: On many levels.
Speaker A: Oh yeah? Yeah. Well, anyway, that, that unit, I, I see based on what we've been doing now, that would be like your personal node. You know, you carry it around with you. You'd have it inside your house, stuff like that. Right. So then like, say you'd have another one probably a little higher powered, like the Hill Tech or something that you would put, you know, a little bit above your roof line, you know, and that way there, the one from inside talks to the one from outside and it puts the information outside and so forth. So that would be the way to operate that if you have higher expectations than you when you're with, you know, you need to be in an area that's got a good amount of mesh. So where I was today, I could see that someone went up Highway 70, you know, about 24 hours ago. So sometime last evening. And when they did, they, they put out their beacon or whatever you want to call it, just like aprs. It made the map so I could see where they were.
Speaker B: Yeah. Absolutely. We have hams. Right. One of them doesn't use a computer.
Speaker A: Yeah. This is not. It doesn't have to be ham. There's some up in paradise. You know, I would say there's probably four to six nodes out right now for people who are not ham radio operators. They don't put their call. There's no call sign associated with it. It doesn't have to be. You could use like an avatar or you could use one. A person looks like they have a picture of a cookie that's their node.
Speaker B: There's just not that many tech minded people in this town, apparently. You know, it's just not. There's nothing like that. There's none near me. And even when I was hitting them, the only one I could hit. I don't know why I can't hit them. Oh, and when Boyd had his repeater gone, then I could get stuff a little bit, but now I can't get anything.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, to give you an idea as to what my one the roof will do sometimes is I. I could take a walk towards Raley's from my house and about the backside of Raley's. I get it. But if I go much further towards the estimate, forget about it.
Speaker B: Yeah, I can believe that. That gives you about half the three quarters of a mile range.
Speaker A: Right? That's it. So that tells you how many more. I mean, the search and rescue building on the other side of town is the main one. Trying to tie everything together and it's tough. And they did stick another one over on Whitney hall and told and I think I saw it come up on the map one time, so. But there's another mobile guy who runs around sometimes. I think he lives kind of close to me. And when he pulls into his house for the night, I have great coverage all the time. But when he's gone in the morning, forget about it.
Speaker B: Yeah, interesting. Then there's a. There's also repeater for sheriff over there where that satellite TV place used to be there off of East Avenue along the railroad track. I wonder if SAR put anything there.
Speaker A: Well, nothing that shows up for sure. There's Chris said, you know, he lives pretty close. He and I can communicate via those nodes no problem usually. But there's another Chris here in town. He lives off of West 11th, so it's across the channel from me. I can't get in direct, but if I go down to the end of my street, then I can get him direct sometimes. So that's the difference. That's only like say I'M gonna call that 75 yards.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's like a football field, right?
Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, it's way better than it was a couple years ago when I first bought the first. No, but, yeah, it's got a ways to go. And we're getting it down up around paradise, at least, and getting down into where I've been able to have a conversation via texting to one of the people in paradise for two days now, back and forth, and I've been able to get out to the Bay Area and even Nevada, I think, from my Chico node as long as that other guy, like I said, from far is here, where he, you know, it hops from mine to his to the Search and rescue building, and they're tied in to the bay. To the bay, what they call the Bay mesh. So there's a whole bunch of people out there. There's one guy in Redwood City that I gotten twice now, so. Interesting. And when you sit over there by the Chico Mall, you're in a really good spot, by the way, because we're getting all kind of traffic in the morning when I go and have a cup of coffee there by Panera. So a lot of traffic coming into there on there on the mesh. So kind of what's. What's happening with that? Anyway, it's in progress, but still more work needs to be done. Kansix mgk.
Speaker B: All right, well, sounds like you're making headway with it, that's for sure. You had your luck making content.
Speaker A: Yes, a couple times now. Once from my house, but multiple hops. And today when I was sitting up there off of Highway 70, I was direct to him in El Dorado Hills. So I was making a pretty good long contact from that spot right to his right to his node and getting acknowledgement back. So. So yeah, I've been getting some success in that regard, but gets to be in the right spot. So that's. That's all I've got about that, by the way. Nothing. Nothing in, you know, in, like, say, if you go to. I think Anderson, I'm only seeing one and a few and a couple in Reading, and that's it. So there's not a whole lot going up north.
Speaker B: Yeah. Even the repeaters up and ready since the one guy moved to Nevada, you know, the repeaters up there, the activity on them dropped off to almost nothing.
Speaker A: Yeah. And, you know, for your area there, if you guys do want to make the mesh, the mesh definitely need to have a lot of contacts around, but I think you do have Some, you have some strategic hire locations. Like maybe there's a tower that you know, of kind of downtown. There might be a water tower in another spot. If you can get. I've been sitting over there at Rolling Hills Casino and they're kind of up above Interstate 5. If someone can be friendly with them or the golf course somewhere out there maybe be a good spot. You have to get quite a few of these nodes all around.
Speaker B: Yeah, we need one on the pole at the firehouse, right?
Speaker A: Yeah, that'd be like the first spot. And it needs to be one that puts out like 1 watt or near it, like the Heltechs do or something. And so I think that's the next step we're going to do is build, is build a little solar node. We're not subscribed right now. We've been buying the little seed nodes and they're about 115 bucks. But they only put out like 150 milliwatts. And we put a better antenna on them and they do better, but there's still nothing like putting out. You know how it is when you have, you have 100 watts and it's like someone's putting out 25 watts and you're putting out 100.
Speaker B: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I know.
Speaker A: Yeah. So yeah, if you can, if you're only going to put out, you know, 150 milliwatts and then you could have spent, you know, say, you know, $25 more, $50 more, and put, and put out one watt, then that's what you should do.
Speaker B: Kind of like me blasting you with 100 watts right now.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah. So you get, you get the point there. But it's not all about how much money you spend, but sometimes the build itself, they're kind of fun to tinker with, but the apps are nuts. Run off your phone or whatever and you might have to reboot your phone, reboot the device, you know, take communicate again. So that gets frustrating.
Speaker B: Yeah, it sounds a little frustrating.
Speaker A: Yeah. Now one thing that I saw today, and this is interesting why it's still a developing thing, so you might be limited to text, but today someone put out, you know, and most people that have these devices have smartphones, obviously. So what happens is you can put out a mesh text, you know, basically, but they put in a video, a YouTube video link in there. And so right when you look at it, you know, it says, check this out, and gives you a description and then you can click on it and bam, it goes right on your phone and opens up, say YouTube and then the video goes along with whatever it was that they were saying or whatever. So think about that. Like you're in a location somewhere, there's a bunch of protesters and you got mainstream media telling you that they're all peaceful and you can sit there and make a little quick video. This is your peaceful protest. And there'll be fires going behind you and stuff like that. So you can post it on the mesh. So it's not nothing to do with cell towers and all that. And people will open that up and see that the mainstream media is all bs, you know.
Speaker B: Absolutely. Did you see the video that KMRD put out on the Yay C tuner?
Speaker A: No, I didn't watch it. Yeah, I mean I looked at the tuner and I go, that looks like an old thing. So I didn't watch it yet. I usually watch all of his videos. I come back around to it, so it sounds like one I need to watch. Yeah, a tuner wouldn't even tune anything
Speaker B: but 80 meters on a Pac Tenno.
Speaker A: Interesting. Well, I think it was like something FP80, so maybe that's why.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know. But he said that's a terrible tuner then today. I see. But it's for members only and I hate when they do that, make you buy and pay to be a member when I already pay for YouTube. I'm not going to pay. But you know, he put one out today showing him testing other tuners with it and they were all better than it.
Speaker A: Yeah, sometimes those member only ones, you know, a few days or a week later come out. You know, I think km4ack does it right. Because he might put them out like on Patreon. Right. And then, you know, a couple days later they come out on YouTube. Something like that.
Speaker B: Yeah, but I don't on YouTube and not being able to have access when I pay like $13 a month for premium YouTube, I'm not gonna pay anymore.
Speaker A: Yeah, I don't pay for premium YouTube and I get hit with commercials about every five minutes at times.
Speaker B: Yeah, I can't handle them. It adds too much time to the videos as it is. I don'. Have time to watch them as it is. So yeah, it's just real, real interesting. But yeah, that's a video you need to watch. He had some pretty harsh words for ya too.
Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. Well, is the FT80 a new tuner for something? I don't recall that one.
Speaker B: For that new Charming radio they rushed to market this year. That HF radio.
Speaker A: Okay. Okay. And that's an FT80 it looked like a big honking thing so they're expecting you to take that out in the field with you?
Speaker B: Anything that's a powerful tuner well, there's
Speaker A: another YAESU tuner that that people buy for the 891 that only tune like 3 to 1 or better I got a kick out of that when I was reading all that and people talking about it and the gentleman in Mineral, he got suckered into buying 891 with that special YAESU tuner.

Speaker A: And I don't have the heart to tell them that, hey, you know, don't listen to those salespeople. You gotta look that stuff up. I wouldn't buy that tuner for nothing. Not for three to one. That's nuts. Maybe they'll do four to one.
Speaker B: You would have been better off by an mcdx10.
Speaker A: Yep. Yeah, no, he was talking the whole time about buying the 710. 710. All the time. I kept. I even sent him emails with specials where I see one selling for 900 bucks on Main trading and stuff like that. But no, he went and went there and bought a brand new one from I don't know where, n radio outlet, I think probably or Giga Parts or whatever. So I don't know. But somehow he ended up with that. Now, the size, the modular size is fine, like your 7100, the size. So I think that's, that's why he was going for it. But I mean it. Well, you know, they don't have as good a filters and stuff like that. Yeah, at least it has a. It has a sound card in it. So he'd have to get one of them digi rigs too. There's another 100 bucks, probably 110 now.
Speaker B: Somewhere in there. The 71.
Speaker A: So. Hey, well, I got you. I'll have to go in just a couple minutes here, but are we gonna make it out to Black Butte to kind of scout out the spot where you want to go or do you care or is it not one of the things that you're. You're doing right now? You're not involved in that. You're just going to show up on the day of if you're going to go.
Speaker B: Well, at this point, I intend to go at least for a while. Michael there yesterday and looked at the site and he thinks it's a good site and I guess they're gonna take the trail.
Speaker A: Okay, so he's picked the site already out there. Did he tell you if it was by the restroom or is it further down or what?
Speaker B: Well, the site I had mapped is down the old house site. The restroom might be better.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, the restroom area is better actually, when, you know, there's that big oak tree to the right. Maybe it's a thousand yards or could be a quarter, maybe an eighth of a mile or a quarter mile down further. But it opens up into a nice big open area. So now is that great? Well, it's good for hf. I know because I've done that. But it isn't good for wind or some other factors. But there's that one tree. That's it.
Speaker B: That's what he said. There's only one tree there. The other comment I made to him when I kind of picked that area, I didn't anticipate the weather being this good. And that's a pretty heavily traveled equestrian area.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, not so bad right there. But we had that trouble the last time I was there. Boy, one of those, you know, good thing it had the right rider on it. He was a big old Mexican and man, he could ride a horse because that horse was bucking him all over the place. And he must have come within six feet of us. And I'm not even exaggerating it. Buck around and he'd have to pull up on the reins right there and be like 20 horses going by. But we were deeper in. They weren't on that big. I think they were taking the. Their big, big horse trailers down that gravel road. But yeah, they. They were. I don't know what you call it, but taking them out of the trailers and riding deeper into where like we had already gone.
Speaker B: I just making a comment that, you know, it was nice.
Speaker A: Pretty. Yep. Well, anyway, so yeah, where I was, you could pull over and have a spot, but you definitely can't clog up that road. People got to be able to go by and it can get dusty. Not that it will be then because it might be a little wet and stuff, so. But the biggest problem is going to be is how many transmitters and that type of thing. Right. So the antennas, I was usually just hand fed halfway when I was going right to that tree. That tree was the other part of it.
Speaker B: Yeah, I can believe that. Yeah, I understand and I understand what you're talking about. But you know, that's kind of out from the no fee area and all that. That's what makes it life.
Speaker A: Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Anyway, I'll have to think about it. Just a vertical and that's it. I don't know. I know it was RF quiet out there still, so that part was nice. But anyway, do you know how many transmitters they're thinking at this point?
Speaker B: I'm guessing.
Speaker A: Yeah. Well, you know, I won't be operating out of there, so if I go.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm. Well, there's filters, so we should be able to come up with some kind of plan, but I'm not. People call. I got calling me wanting to. They can't keep the same phone number. Want to talk on the phone for an hour and I Don't really want to talk to them, if you know what I mean.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. Well, there was some question about what time it starts by Greg K6 Gab. I heard him asking that kind of a question or I think he may have texted me. I said, I don't know, probably 8 o'. Clock. But I told him, you know, to get in touch with, you know, that club. So that was just my guess. I know that OBI likes to start pretty early,
Speaker B: seven, but you know, eight o' clock probably fine. You know, doesn't start till what, 11.
Speaker A: Yeah. Well, the thing is though, people like him, he wants to go there first and then he's going to run right over to Oroville wherever Gears is doing. Doing theirs.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't understand why they're doing that and starting it.
Speaker A: Well, I don't know. That's like a poda. So they're acting like it's a PODA time. So I don't know. Yeah, it is odd. They're an odd group over there. I can't figure them out. But for the PODA purposes, it would be okay. I guess you might actually get two. Two podas out of it if you did it right. But. Yeah, for the Field Day event. I mean, you're gonna leave it. I don't remember. I don't remember where in Orego they're doing it or saying. I think they said it's probably that thermalito after bay. Right. Okay. Yeah. But you know, McGears, people wouldn't care about that, Right? Yeah, I think you ought to. Yeah, I'd be more interested in that too. But I can tell you right now, them here's people, they wouldn't care, most of them. Where's. Where's that going to be? I don't know. I'm just thinking. Thinking out loud. I didn't read nothing but neighborhood church or something. Usually it's where they run bigger ones like that. Okay, yeah, that. I hadn't thought of that either, but makes sense anyway. Well, hopefully I'll be able to see something on the news about all that. That'd be good. Sad deal set for freaking area E2KN6MGK said that? Yeah, no, he. I don't think he was politically motivated one way or the other for his way he represented people and that's why he got reelected so many times. So. Just like Wally Herder. But anyway. Alrighty, Jeremy. Well, let's see tomorrow. Yeah, I'm gonna be going up towards paradise tomorrow and do some work up there. So that's all I got going on. Nothing else do here. Pleasure hearing you and sorry there was no net tonight. I'm not sure what happened there, but maybe there'll be one next week.
Speaker B: Okay.

I'll. For is this actually connects into a radio. Connects the WI fi, I believe. And so you drive it down the road.

2026-01-16 05:06:29 UTC 869.1s · W6GRC TX (147.105 MHz)

Speaker A: Assuming it's got a built in Linux computer made into it or some sort of ARM processor. I've never had any of the cables to it. That's why I never really put it together or figured it out.
Speaker B: K9 kilo alpha delta monitoring. Canine Kilo Alpha Delta, radio check. Anybody copy?
Speaker A: Canine Delta station. Yeah, we copy you. Sorry, we're having some audio. So that's why you're hearing lots of one sided conversations.
Speaker B: Okay, I'm sorry, I didn't copy all that. I heard that you may have heard me. I'm up in Shasta county, where are you guys at? And could you repeat what you just said? It sounded important.
Speaker A: It's not too important. I'm in Glenn county in Orland and I have a repeater down here on the valley floor that we're working on right now getting the All Star notes configured in. But we actually have an alternative here locally that we're talking to at the same time. So there's lots of one sided conversations going on.
Speaker B: Okay, I caught that you're working on Glenn county repeater, All Star node. I'm not too familiar with the All Star node. My radio, the way I programmed it is Elk Creek N6Y C K Nora 6 Yellow. Charles King. Is that your repeater? K9K 80.
Speaker A: All. Star note on here next couple of weeks.
Speaker B: Okay, well you're about a one on the signal report. Unreadable or barely readable, just to let you know. And I believe you said affirmative, it is the All Star repeater down in elk Creek and 6 y c k. So with that I'm gonna just monitor since I can't barely copy you. But thank you for answering. Up Canine King, Adam, David, Claire.
Speaker A: All right, how do I sound now? I'm. I've taken my handy talkie and went up to high power.
Speaker B: 100% better. I actually heard everything you said. So confirm you're on an ht. And what did you do differently?
Speaker A: So what I was doing is I had my antenna unplugged from my HT and we're working on a node with the repeater that's going to go up on the valley there up on the mountain. The call sign has changed on the repeater. It's now whiskey6 call from your Charlie and we're working on the repeater down here on the valley floor. And the repeater that's currently in operation, we're duplicating it right now. So there's two repeaters going on. So that. So we were trying to go low power down Here on the valley floor to work on it. So that's why you're hearing one sided conversations. Sorry about that.
Speaker B: Well, don't be sorry because you're educating me. I'm a brand new operator just a few days in, so I barely know what you're talking about. But I will give you a signal report. You're like a 5:9 if you use that metric, 100% clarity. So confirm for my records I can update. I'll use the police fanatic since I'm familiar. Nora, six Yellow, Charles King. That's Nora. Good. And change it, let me see. Whiskey 6, Golf, Romeo, Charlie. Is that right?
Speaker A: That is correct. So you're at New Ham and you have a 9 call sign. Is that what I'm hearing?
Speaker B: Yeah, affirmative. I got my general license. Probably gonna work on my extra. Well, I am gonna work on my extra. Sometime this year. 2020 26. When I got my general, I made up a vanity call sign. I used canine. You can use any numeric you want in the United States, I think, except for zero. And so my vanity call sign has sentimental application to me, both the canine and the KAD and they both go together. So I'm a west coaster born and raised in cali and I'm K9, but it's a vanity call sign.
Speaker A: Over.
Speaker B: All right, cool.
Speaker A: Awesome there. So I have a little bit of LE background as well. 6 years, not too long. I'm a 30 year volunteer fireman here locally w6GRC. Okay.
Speaker B: I talked to another guy recently, like I think yesterday, and he had six years also, but it was up in the state of Washington. You, you're not that guy. Are you canine? King, Adam, David?
Speaker A: No, negative. Nope. I was a local here. W6GRC. So you're up in Shasta County, I heard. So I assume reading somewhere or up higher.
Speaker B: I'm east of Redding in the foothills. I escaped from San Jose, Silicon Valley after 26 years. Leo. I enjoyed every second of it to the end. And not to get political, but the
Speaker A: administration
Speaker B: bogged me down. So I finally retired, which I didn't want to do. But looking back, it was probably the best thing that I ever did. And I had a piece of property up here. I'm in the foothills east of Redding on the way to Lassen Peak, 2200ft elevation overlooking the valley. And I couldn't be happier. There's nowhere on the planet earth that I'd rather live full time. It's that good. Over.
Speaker A: Well, that's awesome. I'm glad that you got escaped The Bay Area. And you're up north, where California begins.
Speaker B: Okay, so you're familiar. Yeah, I bounced back and forth when I was developing my 10 acres from the South Bay Area to up in Shasta County. And you're so right. It begins somewhere north of. Well, at least north of Williams Willows and extends to the southern Oregon. The people are so friendly. I mean, it's not a cliche. They're warm, they're welcoming. They're right thinking, of course, and I'm doing okay with my pension, but I never pulled in a ton of money. But the cost of living is cheaper up here. Just everything's great. Everything's great. It's just. It's like night and day. And fortunately, I do not have to go back anymore to visit family. Most of them fled to other parts. And I just don't have to make that drive into the Bay Area anymore. So, yes, you are correct. I'm up here where California really starts. And I'm loving every second of it.
Speaker A: Over. Well, sounds like you're living a good life. I appreciate you talking to me there. I'm gonna jump back on, keep fixing this node so we can get it up on the mountain next week. So feel free to use this repeater. There's probably about five, six people that talk on it. Few from Tehama County. Now you from Shasta County. But we'll definitely look forward to talking to you again. W6GRC. And my first is Gary. What's yours?
Speaker B: Two things. Maybe three things. My name is Mark.
Speaker A: Mark.
Speaker B: And I don't really know what All Star Note is. I suppose I could look it up. And what was the other thing? Oh, what. What kind of HT are you on? I'm just wondering what kind of power. How many watts you got? I'm on a 50 watt base station. It's a mobile that I just set up in my house. Many more for a vehicle, but I don't want to drill any holes or anything. I'm happy playing radio from inside my house. But what are you transmitting on? Over.
Speaker A: All right, that's an easy one.
Speaker B: I don't know how long ago you
Speaker A: retired, but it's an APX8000. Did you carry one of those? Motorola?
Speaker B: Not sure about the model. Of course we did Motorola since I started the late 80s or the mid to late 80s. And we had a brick MT500, which was our hand pack. And of course, all the cars had Motorolas, but For the entire 26 years, we had Motorola's. But I don't know what, what model it is, but I was referring to what are you speaking on right now to get out so clearly with an ht. You said you're on a hand pack right Over.
Speaker A: So I'm using a portable radio like the one that you carried in law enforcement on your hip. It's a Motorola APX8000 and it's just got a rubber ducky antenna. Earlier today when I was talking into my node, the repeater that's sitting here on the ground that we're going to install up on the mountain, I took the antenna off my portable so that I wouldn't be transmitting into the repeater on the hill. But I was unsuccessful. The repeater on the hill has good ears and it was hearing the portable as well.
Speaker B: Okay, well, I'll let you go with that. I didn't know anybody really used Motorola for ham radio. Although I know it's a possibility. They're just such a high end radio. But good for you. What a good machine. It's just like you're sitting right next to me. Just for your info coming out loud and clear. And with that I will just monitor. Clear the channel. K9 kilo alpha delta.
Speaker A: All right, buddy, have a good night. W6 GRC.

Speaker A: I'm in a small town called Arab Arc and it's about 15 miles south of Huntsville. And the next town joining this one you have like Morgan City to the north and to the gosh, I'm trying to think of to the east. To the east is Gunnersville. So the other directions were kind of out in the middle of nowhere. And then you've got within driving distance, you know, 30, 40 minutes, you've got Decatur and Coleman. So we're in that section, over.
Speaker B: Oh, okay. Yeah, I know what that is. All right, well, pleasure, pleasure chatting with you. I got a. My wife and son are doing 6:30pm here. We're on the West Coast Civic Time. 6:30. I'm off today. I work at city government. I work at the finance department at Las Vegas City Hall. So we're off on Fridays and then I get a long weekend because it's not Monday. So I got a four day weekend here and I got a number of activities. We got the church coming over for game night tonight. Tomorrow we got. I'm in charge of program called Trail Life at the boys. Folks know kind of like what boy show. So we have an activity tomorrow afternoon for that and then tomorrow morning there's a funeral out with that, you know, like memorial service. Sunday we got church and our friends and church out. We were having a surprise party for her in the afternoon. Surprise. Could be a birthday party with a bunch of people. Monday I'm doing just getting ready for a talk. I'm giving a church on Tuesday. Lot of church stuff going on this weekend. There's a lot of activity, so just a little bit going around. Crazy plus with team baseboards. My wife helping with that part. I'm helping with that project. So ham radio, I don't know, maybe I could do a little bit in between here and there. 84lb. Larry, great challenge and our stuff.
Speaker A: It was great talking to you also. And if you know ralph n7dnb. I've known him for over 30 years. He belonged to hxo.
Speaker B: Alrighty.
Speaker A: I think you said it was nr7g av4ld73. Take care. Good chatting with you.
Speaker B: Very good, Larry. Well, any friend of Ralph's up in the mountain. Yeah, I know Ralph very well. He lives around the corner about, I don't know, maybe as a crow flies, maybe three quarters of a mile mile on here. So. Yeah. All right, take care. And Larry, great shouting with you, meeting you. And I've only been a member of six or seven years now. Anyway, have a great day. I'm sure we'll talk to you. NR 72nd clear.
Speaker A: All right, take care. 84 lD.

Speaker A: N7t&d las vegas.
Speaker B: Good morning, ralph. 84lp.
Speaker A: Larry Good morning. How's the world out in Alabama?
Speaker B: Hi. It's cold. Woke up at 20 degrees and I don't know what it is right now, but it's been pretty chilly. We're supposed to get some rain today. And the daughter lives next door on this two acres. They left, went to. Oh God, where did they go? Philadelphia, I think. And Gina's taking care of their chickens and feeding her cats and we're watching their dogs. Kind of crazy here. I just got done talking to nr7g. Very nice chat.
Speaker A: Yeah, that's John, you know, one of the club members. Great guy, very resourceful individual. You've got, you've got a really loud tone on your signal.
Speaker B: I'm not sure what it is. I don't know either. Hang on a second. Let's go over to a handheld. Let's see if this makes any difference.
Speaker A: The tone is completely gone, but you're not into the repeater or whatever. It's a lot of crackling, but the tone's gone. So. Yeah, I guess the tone was the radio.
Speaker B: Okay, I've got my notice out in the living room. It's probably, I don't know, 30ft away. I've got one in here and one out there. So I just, I just boosted the power a little bit. So anyway, how's your morning?
Speaker A: Oh, not bad. Just getting started, making my way into the office. Very day out here, it's like 50, 52 corner of my car and yeah, there's you know, Mondays. Heck, is it some kind of holiday? Oh, that MLK thing. Anyways, so Monday to holiday. A lot of the government people are taking today off, making it a four day weekend. So it's probably gonna be pretty quiet. But I just hired a new director of engineering. Started a week or so ago. So I got a meeting with him to talk about just generally how things are going and stuff like that. I got some HR issues to work, which I always, always love that stuff. So it's gonna be, gonna be one of those days. But try to get out of here on four or five o'.
Speaker B: Clock. Okay? I lost part of that. I don't know if there was a pack of loss on my end or what, but. So you've got to train this new person. No, no, no.
Speaker A: I hired him to replace my engineering director. The guy, the guy. I've got my running my division retiring and so I got this new guy on board. So they're, they're working a transition Thing right now. I just need to talk to him about a few things.
Speaker B: We've got a.
Speaker A: We've got a lot of subcontractor employees that work for us directly day in, day out. Ones tend to be. Their companies tend to be a little bit of an issue. So I gotta make sure he understands that and give him some, some pointers.
Speaker B: Okay. Yeah. John says that he works four days a week. So he's got today off and then he's got Monday off for mlk. So that's a nice weekend. The friend of mine back in Northern California, where I moved for a little bit, he works for the City of Paradise. He takes care of all the emergency vehicles, police, fire, ambulance, all of that. His normal day off is Monday. No. Yeah, Monday. So he's gonna have Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday off, and then you go back for like Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. He's got a pretty good, you know, if he falls on Tuesday or whatever, and he's got Monday, Tuesday, and it's pretty slick. But he works long hours. He puts like, I don't know, 10, sometimes 12 hours a day. And when a vehicle comes in, needs to be repaired, he's there maybe 4lb.
Speaker A: Yeah, that is pretty cool.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker A: John works for the City of Las Vegas contracting, I think. But. Yeah, so he's one of those. He's that, that 410 thing. I guess it is. You know, we do kind of a hybrid at my place. I let. I let the department heads figure it out. As long as we got coverage and
Speaker B: I don't really care.
Speaker A: But we got people that work 980s, you know, every other Friday office, some people work 4, 10, but I can't, you know, I just, I gotta be there. So I just, I just work by five days a week and typically 10, 12 hours a day is my day, but goes to the territory, I guess.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, you know, you'll retire one these days and I don't know if you're going to stay in Las Vegas or not, but God said he's moving up to Northern Nevada. I guess they're already starting to build. I got out of prompt because I got the divorce and got together with a girl I knew many, many, many years ago, back in 72 or 73. So we got together, got married. Here we are in Narad, Alabama. So I've been moving around quite a bit. I like Sparks. Sparks was really nice. Had a nice house up there, but wanted to be with her kids and, you know, I'm glad that I moved out of Peram. Gosh, that place has really gone to the dog.
Speaker A: Yeah. You know, I've got a few people I know that live in Parrot, and they're kind of telling me the same thing. It's really changed a lot of drug usage and unfortunately. But yeah, I'm probably another. I don't know, maybe two years out from hanging it up. We'll see. A year and a half. Two years, maybe we'll see how things go. But, you know, I don't. I'm not sure what we're gonna do. I. I can't attend Las Vegas. The town has really gone to hell. And I've been here since 83, so a long time. But wife doesn't want to move, so that's gonna be a whole thing. We'll see. But, yeah, like I said, I like that. Pretty much like the weather here, except for the summertime when it's really the blazing heat. But a guy I work with bought a house up in Carson City and his wife lives up there. And he goes up there on the weekends. Just gets one of these, you know, cheap Spirit Airlines type flight, Sereno. And he loves it up there. He sent me some pictures of this place. Looks really, really nice. And they get more Four Seasons up there. Not really stupid winters with a lot of smell, but a little bit. So he kind of. He kind of like. So I might. I might go up there one of these days, Just kind of tour around for a while, get a hotel for a few days and see what the city's all about. At least that keeps me in Nevada where there's no state income taxes. I definitely don't want to move to a state where I got to pay income taxes when I'm retired, but who knows? So where in Alabama? I do a lot of business in Huntsville with a couple of the major contractors out there, like Lighthouse and SRC and EWA and those guys. I'm out there probably a couple, three, four times a year, depending on what kind of projects you got on the books.
Speaker B: Are you.
Speaker A: Are you fairly close on still?
Speaker B: Yes, I am. South Huntsville, you know where the Tennessee river is. I'm about maybe 15 miles from there. 12 miles. It doesn't take very long. It's right off of 231. I'm about two miles to the west of 231. So it takes probably, I don't know, 30 minutes to 20 minutes get to Huntsville. So like I said, we're not very far. It's. I. Well, to the airport. It takes about 40 minutes south to get to my place.
Speaker A: M7tnd Las Vegas.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's not far at all.
Speaker A: I usually work around the area by the airport, private airport, probably a 10, 15 minute drive from where I usually stay. I stay around Redstone Arsenal I guess it's a major area. I don't really do a lot of work with the army. It's mainly Air Force and Space Force, but a lot of the contractors that I work with.
Speaker B: Okay, well I'll have to send my phone number for. You know you shoot me an email when you're this way because I checked my email all the time but love to meet up with you, go out, buy lunch or whatever, stay here, you know, come over and get a cup of coffee or something. But that would be great because gosh, it's been eons since I've seen you before. AB4LD Arab, Alabama.
Speaker A: Yeah, sorry about that drop out Larry. I'm using up. I don't have a radio in my car so I'm using some POC radio to connect a quick drop out on my cell carrier. Yeah, no, I heard the back end of that. Yeah, I'll definitely do that. I'm not sure what I'm going to be out there next. I've got a meeting with one of the. One of our subs I think in the summer I late spring summer. So I'll definitely tie up. Like I said, I usually stay in a hotel right around Redstone Arsenal, one of the Hiltons there. So that's not too far away from me at all.
Speaker B: No, it's not. How much time do you spend here? A couple days.
Speaker A: You know, it really depends on what I got going on.
Speaker B: I don't make.
Speaker A: I at least stay one night. I mean it's a long flight. I usually take a Delta flight out here on six in the morning. Gets me there early afternoon. So that's one day just almost just on travel.
Speaker B: Although I can probably.
Speaker A: Usually I do a couple of meetings in the later afternoon. But you know, anywhere from I would say three to four days I would guess I'm usually there three nights, sometimes four nights depending on what's going on. So I'll definitely figure it out even if I have to just explain end of day.
Speaker B: That would be a fun Ralph, I'd love to see you. God, it's been forever. You know, we talked and I'm glad that Carla's up and running and by the way, I connected to 29150. I don't know if that's where the hum is coming from but being different radios, you would think the hum would still be here if it was, you know, if it was the network, so. But we'll see what happens. Maybe I'll connect back up to my friend Larry. He's connected the car all the time. We'll see what happens. And time I talked to you, I was connected to him. I tried to stay awake for the. For the net. Last night? No, Wednesday night. And I just couldn't do it. I was up for. Gosh, I don't know.
Speaker A: I got up about 3 or 4
Speaker B: in the morning and I just couldn't keep my eyes open. Come nine o', clock, that's pretty late for me.
Speaker A: Yeah, I didn't make a net this week either. I got some other things going on in my personal life, so it's got me a little occupied.
Speaker B: But.
Speaker A: Yeah, no, 29150 is our. The HXO hub. We hosted a Vulture server in la and we're all tied. We're all meshed together. So Carlo's online right now, Larry's tied to Carlo, then he's hearing us, yada, yada, yada, Everything. Everything's all tied together. And the only time we disconnect from Tom and the guys and Carla is when we're running our nets so we don't muck up the entire system with our traffickers. But other than that, we're. Unless there's a technical problem, we're tied up 24. I don't know if your battery's going dead on your Larry or what, but nothing on that one. I heard a little bit of audio and you went away.

Speaker A: Well, the mini hookup is simple. I did not get a router and I guess you don't need. Hasn't. It's all WI fi built in. I don't know if that's coming out of the wall work or the dish itself. There one other cable you can hook up if you want to direct wire it into your network or a computer or whatever, you're going to use it for a TV.
Speaker B: RJ45. The tv,
Speaker A: the projector tv. Jay, you're not going to believe that. You're just not. You're not even going to believe how crystal clear that is. And the Starlink mini is only has one adjustment. You just go put it outside and then you can look at it on your phone. It'll tell you which way to tilt it, this way or that way. It just sits on the ground. It doesn't need a pole, it doesn't need a stand, nothing like that. You could, you could just lay it flat on a, on a picnic cable. You plug in the one cord, you plug that into 110v, which they have some options. You can get a 12 volt little inverter that you. It only needs 40 watts or something. So you can plug it into 12 volts DC and it'll, you know, upvert it so that it gives it the voltage it needs in case you only have 12 volts wherever you're setting up. But anyway, the little wall work thing that it comes with, that weighs about a pound. It'll work. You can plug that in just about anywhere. It works on 100 volts to 220.

Speaker B: Base, Is the gate not open?
Speaker A: No, with the fog, I left way early. I'm supposed to be out there by 8:30, so I don't want to be too early.
Speaker B: Okay. So, Mike, let's see. I think it's 74 calendar days and 52 working days.
Speaker A: You're counting down.
Speaker B: I've been counting down for months.
Speaker A: You letting everybody know at work, too?
Speaker B: Not loudly, but, yes. Well, yes, actually. Especially the people that I've had, you know, relationship with. I'll see one of them in the hallway or something and let them know. The Count.
Speaker A: Yep. It's definitely something to start a conversation with. Right?
Speaker B: Yeah. You know, if, if I felt like they had me better employed at work, I might not pay so much attention to it. But they don't. So, you know, I guess it has to do. I guess, you know, the Count actually has to do with my attitude towards the whole situation also. It's like, okay, you don't want to use me. You don't, you know, think that my knowledge is valuable, then, you know, I'll be glad to leave this place. And guess what? I've only got this much time left.
Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Well, like, I'm wondering what I have going on out there today.
Speaker B: Well, you mean what activity have they got as far as flying and things is concerned or just what your meeting is going to be all about?
Speaker A: Oh, what the meeting's gonna be about. I guess the general is gonna be speaking and who knows what else. It's a meeting with the honoraries and the, and the base commanders. Together.
Speaker B: Yeah. Okay. So you want to hear something interesting?
Speaker A: He.
Speaker B: He wasn't stationed there, but. And I miss him by a couple of years, but, you know, I think Beale is part of this 12th Air Force, and one of my high school classmates ended up being commander of the 12th Air Force for a while.
Speaker A: Oh, wow.
Speaker B: So if I'd stayed in a couple more years, I'd have been working for him, technically.
Speaker A: Oh, yeah,
Speaker B: I, you know, they did the change of command ceremony or after the change of command ceremony for, you know, when he took over 12th Air Force, he was, he had come to. He was going to come to Beale for some reason. And I saw that in the papers, and I almost went out there to see him.
Speaker A: Yeah, they change. They change, I want to say, every two or four years. And then like my commander will be leaving here in a few months. He won't be leaving, he'll just be stepping down and a new commander will be in his seat.
Speaker B: Yeah, I think it's pretty much about a two year deal when they take those positions
Speaker A: down. The commanders. Yeah, the general. I don't know how long that is, but I know that we, we changed generals quite a bit for the base.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't recall. I think that was probably his last command before he. Before he retired. And I forget where 12th Air Force is stationed, but. Yeah. Wow. With all the fog down in the river bottoms, it almost looks like with a casual glance that it's flooded down there.
Speaker A: Yeah. Between that and. It kind of reminds me of, you know, flying through the clouds.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker A: Yeah.
Speaker B: Well, I noticed the reservoirs are. Well, they're not full to the top, but they're fairly full. I think they said that Oroville, which is at like 70 per cent, 77 or 78% capacity, they consider that full.
Speaker A: Yeah, but we still have plenty of room, so, you know, we don't need to worry about it too much.
Speaker B: I guess we're past the storms that were concerning them, so.
Speaker A: Yay. Yeah. Even though, you know, it. It's not too late to have a few snowstorms, which would be really nice. But, you know, because our. This is just my opinion. Our weather has changed, has moved forward two to three months.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, it certainly is not the same as it was, that's for sure.
Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, we'll live through it. Trust me. I'm not concerned about it. But it's moved. I mean, October used to be cold and we're still in the 90s to triple digits.
Speaker B: Well, listen, I just pulled in at work, so I gotta go in there and see what's not waiting for me to do that seems to be pretty much my story nowadays. I go inside and I sit at that desk for eight hours today and then I leave.
Speaker A: Alrighty. Well, you have some fun and I'm gonna go ahead and get in line and get on base. 73 KK6RSQ clear.

So it's just got that one cable they give you 50ft that you plug into the wall and the other end plugs into the Mini which is about half the size of the home unit. And it does all the spinning and corrections inside the unit. No moving parts. Kind of like that antenna, that high Q antenna. No moving parts on the outside. Yes sir. I don't know what generation I got because it doesn't say. But probably after I hook it up I'll be able to see it on the phone. I, I'm thinking Gen 3 though. So today when I get back from John's I am going to. Hook the Starlink up straight to the projector. I get a 30 days free trial on that and you can turn that on and off the composite anytime you want. So if you had 20 days left over, that's cool. And if you go with the roam package for 165amonth you can turn that on when you use it and when not. They keep track of the days that you used, which I like. I'll probably use it every day though when we're on the road because you know I like to watch TV at night. You can turn it on and off. You can pause it anytime you want. You just go on your phone, go to Starlink and hit pause and you save whatever days you have remaining until you restart it again. No charge to restart it. And it's $5 a day when you're in pause for the month. For the month. $5 a month if you're not using it. They're offering me a plan right now for half off. So you can get a 40 gig and you can get what ends up being a hundred gigs. They upped it to a 100 gigs for which isn't enough for me or you or you can get that unlimited plant. Well that's $65 a month. And if you want unlimited and Rome it's 1 65amonth which is probably what we'll do because they, we head out someplace and come back in three weeks. Then I would just pause it. And that's up the, that's the speed of up to 200 millibytes per second. Which nobody ever has any complaints. After this guy set up his Mini he was getting 140 millibytes. So funny path was streaming. Yes, no problem. And that's going to cost you 40 watts of 120 volts. Perfect. Perfect. I didn't take the meter out but I got my meter over at John's now. So it's plugged into 110, so I actually didn't try how many days it'll run the refrigerator and the lights and the pump and all that stuff. I will put it to the test, though.

Speaker A: Kn 6 mgk mobile.
Speaker B: Good morning, steve. N6trq.
Speaker A: Hey, good morning. Good morning. Yep, got my radio in the mobile here on this morning. Seeing what's going on.
Speaker B: Well, I think there's a chance that there was a big solar storm. I'm hearing noise on all bands, including this one. And at first on hf things were extremely long. You could only hear stations that were quite distant, nothing in California whatsoever, and that included San Diego. So it was a very unusual band this morning and it changed rather quickly and I couldn't even hear Sierra Yankee who was just bombed in from. From Las Vegas. So, yeah, it was a strange band. Actually, she's not Las Vegas, she's eastern northeastern Nevada.
Speaker A: Yeah, she's like an Elko. Anyway. Yeah, I probably could have told you that this morning. I've been up since 4 and I was working the digital. You can look at my PSK reporter on 40 meters from this morning and you could see that the band was real long. I was getting a lot of east coast and a lot of Asiatic. Even Asiatic Russia, China, Indonesia, all that stuff over into Asia. So. Yeah, but the stuff along the west coast just wasn't coming in this morning. So I could see it was definitely long.
Speaker B: Very strange band. A lot of strange things going on. I switched over to this other Baja net, 72.33.5, and Tony India, Golf Zulu was over there and even Golf Papa happened to jump over there and hear him, which is probably one of the reasons why Tony left the. The other net. So. Yeah. Oh boy.
Speaker A: Yep. Well, as time goes on, some people will be leaving the nets and whatever. That's what seems to be happening. There's still only about. I haven't been listening. So about a dozen check ins every morning. Is that kind of where it's at right now?
Speaker B: Yeah, that's how the regular Baja Net is. Just a dozen or less and Tony's
Speaker A: not one of them.
Speaker B: And yet I was surprised to hear him doing weather over there at the other Baja nest. So he's one of the best weather guys out there, so they're lucky to have him.
Speaker A: Yeah, maybe you should start doing that and that instead. If it comes a little later.
Speaker B: Well, maybe. Yeah, it was a strange morning. My dog was all upset with something
Speaker A: and
Speaker B: allowed himself to get a little bit overly worked up. And so yeah, it was a strange morning, but weather wise it's just gorgeous. So. And it's also another strange thing is my window weather monitor is claiming that there's going to be rain coming up. I don't know exactly what makes that weather monitor decided, you know, it does its own little forecast, the regular weather system weather, people say clear skies and no rain for. Out for quite a distance.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, I'm seeing. Even my tulips and daffodils are starting to. Starting to come alive and stuff. So I don't know, definitely seeing signs of change. So kind of that La Nina pattern, like where we've gotten all that wet stuff at, you know, one particular time and then be dry for a month, you know, so kind of what I'm expecting. So a couple more weeks of this kind of weather and then we might get another good storm system in here, I would bet.
Speaker B: Well, from what I had heard, it was actually an El Nino pattern. And NOAA says, Excuse me, NOA said AA said that El Nino would be over as of spring, so winter weather should. It's hard to say what's going to happen. And it does this, you know, it'll swing back and forth between lots of rain and lots of clear skies for not quite as long as an extended period as we're having this time. But we've probably got rain in the distance forecast. Haven't even seen it on the ten day, though. Yeah.
Speaker A: No, incidentally, yeah. With these LORA devices, you know, you can get different sensors for them and stuff, and temperature, humidity, that type of thing is all possible. And I think if we build our own node, I think we're going to do that here. I think we're talking about that possibly today, ordering some stuff up to build our own, but we'll add some of those sensors to it. So then when it sends out its position packet, it'll send out its WX information also, so anyone in the mesh can see it. You know, pretty interesting. I strategically placed a node yesterday about 5 o', clock, and it's been banging real good heading into the about 140 miles to the South Bay area and then also directing its traffic into Chico and into the paradise area at the same time. So it's a pretty interesting little spot, but seems to be helping out the mesh network in those two areas anyway. But not getting over to my house. That's the only bad thing. So still nothing on. I can't seem to get much going on the north. Call it the northwest side of Chico.
Speaker B: Well, that's why I was asking you about rf, because I did notice that
Speaker A: the
Speaker B: charts, if you will, or maps or whatever they're, however they're deciding to call themselves, are saying that the signals are making it to the Bay Area, but They're really not. The RF signals are not making it to the Bay Area. What's happening is there is a connection, virtual connection to the Bay Area somehow. And, you know, it's just. You have to look at the whole thing and try to figure it out, actually, you know, and use a little common sense. And, you know, there's no way the RF signals are making it there. Some sort of virtual connection. But it's interesting. Another interesting mode, by the way. APRS has had weather stations on its network for a long time. Some of them are ham radio operators. And I think a few of them might not be. I don't know.
Speaker A: Well, we have a way of telling in the app anyway, where it tells you if you sent something direct. It gives you a special kind of a symbol. If it makes it and it comes back to you as acknowledged. So we do have a way of telling that versus just sending one out and have it go multiple hops and so forth. Then it might just give you a check mark. And so you actually don't know if you made that communication. So there are ways of knowing inside the app. And then you have traceroute. I could start sending you a couple of those if you have interest. And the traceroute is tracing the route of the signal. So like Ki6ssi, our friend there, Pete, in El Dorado Hills yesterday, I was hitting him direct. So. And that was from around the Lake Oroville area. As far as that distance. That might only be 75 miles or something. I don't know. Maybe as a crow flies. I don't know. I'd have to look it up. But I don't think it's. I don't think it's 90 miles or something. I don't think it's 100, in other words. But it's still El Dorado Hills. That's Sacramento area, but in the foothills. So foothills to foothills, we're seeing each other.
Speaker B: Well, that's quite remarkable for 100 milliwatts or less. So. And a little rubber ducky antenna. So, okay.
Speaker A: Yeah, I don't know. You're not. You're not following, though. It's not 100 milliwatts. So you can. You can transmit up to 29 or. I think it is DBM. And that's what these are putting out. And the Heltech V4s are putting out somewhere near 800 milliwatts is kind of what we've calculated using. I think I've sent you that one machine anyway that Dan has. It's a Pretty nice machine. But anyway, that's kind of what he's with his devices. He's figured out that the Heltech V4s are putting out about 800 milliwatts. They're doing way better than the little rack ones are. They're only putting out like, like you say 138 milliwatts I think is what he's got.
Speaker B: Well, what are you running?
Speaker A: Yeah, the Heltech V4. Yeah, I have two of those. I have one T beam, but I pretty well shut that down. It's an old one. I don't know how much that puts out. It does drain the battery a lot. And then I have one Seed Solar. So seed is like km4ack showed on his video as a seed cap. And those have like a NRF5280, whatever it is, Chip. So those are really efficient. But they're only putting out like 140 milliwatts.
Speaker B: Well, still to, you know, to think that you can make it through the mountains, which are a ton of mountains in the way to the Bay Area between the Bay Area and, and you direct just doesn't make sense.
Speaker A: Well, I'll look up a trace route. That's all I can do. These people don't have call signs, they only have locations on a map. So that's about all they've got. And you know, a lot of times some people do associate their ham radio call sign with their node, but I've seen people use just a picture of a cookie, you know, so they don't have to, is what I'm saying. KN6NGK.
Speaker B: Yeah, and I've looked at the maps and seen all those direct lines to the Bay Area which are somehow making it directly through mountains like St. John and Yola Bola Wilderness and everything and making it directly through Phyllis Mountains.
Speaker A: So yeah, that's quite incredible. Well, I don't know. The one repeater in Magellia ought to get its height. I bet you it's around 3,000ft. So somewhere near there, maybe 2,500ft. So it might be above some of the those mountains, I don't know. And yeah, using a little bit different antennas too helps. I mean some of the ones we're using are, you know, eight or 10dB gain antennas, not just some. I mean, yeah, they look like, well, the half wave looks like a small antenna you'd put on a Bowfang or whatever. You know, they're about 7 inches long, but the other ones that have been home brewed or whatever Are collinears. There's instructions online for that, so I think that helps too. But yeah, certainly go through St. John, you're going to bounce off that somehow. Yeah, so, but anyway, St. John Mountain isn't in the way of these Paradises and Magalia ones that are going, they're not going to the North Bay, they're going to the South Bay, like San Jose area, Fremont and stuff like that.
Speaker B: Well, those stations are at about, you know, two or 300ft elevation at the most, maybe 100ft. And there's whole mountains range of, you know, huge bunch of mountains in the way. Not just one mountain, but multiple mountain ranges in the way between the Bay Area and, and Magalia. So okay, it's interesting that they're saying that one watt can make it where, you know, 50 watts can't make it. We know 50 watts can't make it. So okay, anyway, you know, without a true RF. System that, you know, is actually looking at the RF only and not incorporating digital modes into just makes it, you know, some errors are getting mixed in there I think because I saw those direct lines from, you know, from, from those stations to the Bay Area. I saw those and yeah, okay, anyway, it's an interesting, interesting mose, that's for sure.
Speaker A: I'll have to look up what the digital packet, you know, what spectrum or what bandwidth I should say is occupying, how wide it is. If it's like you know, tw 50 hertz, is it 300 hertz like other packet stuff? I imagine that makes a bit of a difference too, but I'd be curious. I don't know, but I know it's working to some degree. Anyway, yeah, Chico to there is a whole other story, so I would definitely agree with you that way in order for me to hit like there's this one guy in Redwood City I've been able to talk to a couple times and it should say talk but chat with or whatever and. But that goes through at least one hop, so maybe two.
Speaker B: So.
Speaker A: And that's pretty well defined. But anyway, it's repeatable, at least to some degree and it's getting better. But it's a lot tougher from Chico, I'll tell you that, than it is from paradise. Spaghalia KN6MGK becoming close to my destination.
Speaker B: Well, one of the reasons why it's tougher from Chico is that you've got fewer possibilities for Internet connected nodes in seco. We're in Paradise. It sounds like that's what they're all doing. They're all using a Internet connected node?
Speaker A: Nope, none. There's one right now that is. So I guess there's one. I know. No Internet connections. Now, where there is an Internet connection on hops would be like the Butte County Search and Rescue building. They have Internet connection in Chico, so. But yeah, there's like, I think 18 nodes, 18 nodes in paradise. And they didn't hook one up to the Internet until like yesterday.
Speaker B: Well, even with one, all it takes is one and then everything basically is funneled into the Internet.
Speaker A: Yep, that can happen. Yeah, for sure. But you know, those other stations have to have direct access to that unit. And we don't only like two stations have some sort of access to it. It seems like so far, yeah, it's all experimental. Anyway, I'm going to head on inside. Get me a cup of coffee. I think KN6MGK wants to chat with you later. 73,
Speaker B: you at that coffee shop?
Speaker A: I've already driven up to paradise, so. Meeting with the ham radio guys in about 20 minutes? Yep, something like that. They'll be here. So then I'll head over to the the property and work today. That's what I'm up to. Come home probably 4 or 5 o'.
Speaker B: Clock.
Speaker A: By 5 o', clock, I guess. All right, say 73 KN 6 MGK.
Speaker B: 73 Steve N6PRG.

So if there's moisture in here and you're parked outside, you have ice on the windows in the morning. Yeah, we just. We just don't have the moisture down here on the south. Not too much these days. Is there any way that you can increase your audio at all? You're probably fine, but I don't have a very good speaker on this radio, and with the background noise, the truck is kind of hard to hear. Speaker A: Where are we in Northern California this morning at 7 to 8?
Speaker B: Hey, good morning, Chris here. Redding, California. Nice and cold up here. Crystal clear and snow in the mountains all the way around the valley. It's looking beautiful. How about you?
Speaker A: Sounds like a nice day. Crossed over the hills here. Coming into the Reno Sparks metro area proper sundown. Supposed to be warmer than normal for January day, but the high pressure we get a pretty strong inversion between the smoke from people burning their wood stoves and dust and all that kind of stuff being held down the valley here. The air looks a little bit murky. Not terrible, but not. Not the best either. And of course, snow on all the mountains around here as well.
Speaker B: Yeah, roger that. Yeah, we had a little north wind blowing up here, and it blew all the goop in the. In the air out of here is crystal clear. It's still around on the. On the mountaintops. All the way around the basin is really, really pretty. And Yesterday, unbelievable day. 79 degrees in Redding. But the spirit morning I woke up and they. They claim at the airport in reading, it was 56, but at my place, I'm kind of down in a little valley. It was 34. And there's definitely ice on the. On the truck.
Speaker A: Go ahead. That's a little chilly for the valley there. Like I said, this time of year it's normal here. But we still got catches of snow on the ground here in town, too. We had some snow, what, a little over a week ago, maybe about eight days ago. Not very much, but it's been cold enough that it's hung around. It's warming up the next couple days. I'm sure it'll probably what's left here will melt away.
Speaker B: Yeah, Roger that. Is definitely melting away. I just got back from Klamath Falls, Oregon, and there was snow on the ground up there from previous storms. And I'll be heading down your way here end of the month out to Reno. Sparks up and over the hill and down into the eerington area, picking up Highway 95, heading south for the winter. I'll be down there for a couple months in the Arizona, eastern Nevada area.
Speaker A: Okay, very good. Well, let me give you a little tip here. If you're traveling first off, hope you have a good trip. That's kind of a long, desolate run out there, but I enjoy it. If you're not familiar, something you might want to check out is cave agfn.org@little community radio station in Goldfield. Maybe you're already aware of it, but it says 89.1. They have translator up around Hawthorne and I forgot the frequency. I think it's either 90.5 or 92.5, but I'm not sure about that. Another one down towards Beatty, and it's really kind of fun. They play a lot of country, bluegrass, some other things that may not be your format, but just the little tidbits of entertainment they throw in there. It really makes it kind of fun to listen to. So I've been listening to it a lot on streaming off the Internet around here. But let me reset this for a minute. I heard about it and was aware of it, but I met the program director general manager in Beatty on my way back from Boulder City in October, talked to him quite a bit. And they bought a caboose from the Colorado Wyoming Railroad and moved it to Goldfield and have it right there alongside the highway there, downtown Goldfield. And that's their radio studio. But after talking to them, I started listening to it more and I kind of enjoy it. So just something you might want to check out on the trip there.
Speaker B: Hey, thank you for that. I appreciate the information. Yeah, I love going down 95, man. That's a lot better than doing i5 high five is nothing but potholes. And 95, man, it is smooth as baby's butt and fuel is a couple dollars cheaper than California. And it's a really nice ride. We'll go down, down into Vegas and our final destination is going to be Boulder City. And then we're going to continue on and down into Arizona.
Speaker A: Very good. Yeah, Boulder City's a neat little town. Probably a lot of people who go to Las Vegas don't even know about it, but they're old, historic downtown there
Speaker B: along the old highway and everything that's fun to check out.
Speaker A: So. Nice town.
Speaker B: And do you do this annually?
Speaker A: Has it been a while since you've been that way?
Speaker B: I do it every year. This will be, I think my seventh year going down. I used to do i5 down to where I go down to Bakersfield, cut over, up and over the attached piece and I don't do that, that anymore. Ever since I discovered 95. That's, that's my route. I love that route. And it's a, it's a really nice ride, but you gotta, you gotta pay attention to the weather. I got, I got hung up in weather here a couple years ago and spent three extra days in Reno until the weather lifted and I was able to make it home. That was, that was my route home. This, this year will be the longest one of the latest I've stayed. Usually I'm down there January, February. This year I'm going to be down there February, March and we're doing a,
Speaker A: we're going to do a run.
Speaker B: I'm a side by side enthusiast. There's a group of us and we're leaving Mesquite, Nevada and heading over to par 10 ranch on the Grand Canyon. The rim of the Grand Canyon. About 100, 110 mile ride one way and we'll spend three days over there and then head back home a different route. Another 110 miles back to Mesquite.
Speaker A: Looking forward to it.
Speaker B: It'll be a lot of fun. Go ahead.
Speaker A: Well great. That does sound like fun. And so you're an annual traveler there. I'm sure you're aware that there's a loves Travel center there in Tonopah. So that's a favorite fuel stop for me now when I go that way.
Speaker B: Roger that. Well, I'm aware of it and I carry a TSC logistics card. Gives you about, I don't know, 50, 60, 70 cents a gallon off of
Speaker A: your fuel at the truck stop, which is pretty good.
Speaker B: And then of course I'm always shopping diesel, you know, wasn't for the cheapest price. It's nice that the cost of diesel
Speaker A: is going way, way down. Yeah, it's been since October since I went that way. So not sure where things are now. Of course I think you get on their, their app loves app and see what the prices are. But I know that here where I'm at we're still north of $3 a gallon. But my sister went to Carson City and we have a, we have an extra tax that we pay to the regional transportation commission in this county here that they don't have there in Carson City. And she said she only paid two something I think yesterday while she was there.
Speaker B: That's a pretty good price. Yeah, I'm, I'm paying right now like
Speaker A: if I can find it for 365. I'm doing really super good.
Speaker B: But definitely it's below, it's below $4 a gallon now which is, which is really, really nice. Hey listen, I didn't catch your name. The name here is Chris. I gotta jump out. I gotta go pick up the wife's car and go do some stuff with it. Drop my truck, grab her car. So hey, nice, nice chatting with you and you have yourself a fabulous day and I hope to tie in with you another day. KF6CAU Charlie Alpha uniform Northern California.
