That was the RF path 31. Bit noisy there, unit.
Kk7lv.kk7yk.
Speaker A: K 7g and d m
Speaker B: 6kn e. Good evening, Ken. How are you doing?
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm sorry I'm not getting back to you. I've been a little bit tied up. I just finished my dinner and we're gonna start doing a little bit of testing here just shortly. But I didn't want to leave you hanging any more than I already have.
Speaker C: Hey, no problem, Jen. You understand when I get to a dinner called myself shortly, so no problem. I just heard y' all and one say howdy, so howdy and hope you'll chatty Easter and see how you doing.
Speaker A: Okay. Yeah, I'll give you a shout as soon as I'm done with these guys. Shouldn't be too much longer. All right, Good to hear you. Hope everything is well up there. And Lawrence, OR N6KN.
Speaker C: Yeah, everything's well here. Everything's really good.
D.
Gears holds a free Morse code class every Wednesday night, 6pM at the Golden Beaver Distillery still house at 2420 Park Avenue. All are welcome to come learn Morse code W6R, H, C repeater check 2.
Speaker A: Aj6 November Kilo Romeo coming in on Topaz. Kj 6th november kilo romeo on topaz.
Speaker B: Yeah, you're making it just fine.
Speaker C: A little bit.
Speaker B: A little bit of path noise, but overall it's a good signal and good audio. N6KN E.
Speaker A: Roger that. N6KNE. I think it was. Yeah. KJ6NKR. All right, well, good to know it's linked up. Yeah, the Topaz system is kind of a remote one. I'm not really sure how it hits over to the California side. I don't know, maybe it goes through echo or something.
Speaker C: Not sure. But anyways.
Speaker A: Yeah, it sounds good here. You know, I'm probably not in the best spot. There's a few mountains in between me and the repeater. So anyways, hey, thanks again. Name is Jeff, kind of. Let's see, I don't know. I don't have any landmarks nearby, but I'm in between Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood.
Speaker B: Okay.
Speaker C: All right.
Speaker B: I do know that Topaz will be getting All Star here soon. Maybe sometime over the summer. We've already got a note set up for it or node number. In fact, the guys are down at Santiago, down there in Southern California right now working on stuff. But yeah, Topaz will have a. Will have a. Hopefully have a All star sometime this summer. Okay, you take care. My name is Ken and I'm down here in Chinatown.
Speaker C: Columbia,
Speaker A: You say? The mouth of the Columbia. Like the Columbia River,
Speaker B: Colombia. As in juan valdez, south america.
Speaker A: Geez. Okay. Yeah, I was way off course. I. I never would have guessed. Anyways, well, enjoy the summer there on the other side of the world. Thanks for the quick contact and the info about that. This to be All Star linked on Topaz. Very cool. All right, Ken, I'll have a good, good rest of the day there. From KJ6, November Kilo, Rome.
Speaker B: Hi, good to meet you.
Speaker D: Hey, ken. Good afternoon. Evening in 7t and d. How are you?
Speaker C: Very good, Ralph.
Speaker B: How are you? The boys are up on San Diego, gonna start doing some testing. If we start putting out tones out over the air. Do you want me to disconnect you or are you okay?
Speaker D: No, I'm good. Go ahead and stay connected. We got nothing going on. So the nets. If we have nets, we disconnect.
Speaker C: Anyway.
Speaker D: So now I'm good. Just didn't work. Long day. I got ahead. How the hospital stay going? Rehabilitation. Need to pick up some things for her to take tour, so that's about it. Yeah, I heard you and Tom talking this weekend about an impending trip. So it sounds good.
Speaker B: All right. I didn't catch who was in the hospital, but I wish them well and a speedy recovery. Maybe your wife. All right, I will talk to you later. And I'll be listening, waiting for Tom and Jeff. And I think Fred. Fred is up there too. And six knee.
Speaker D: Okay, I'm getting some pee loss here. It's probably on my end. Yeah, it's my mom, so. Okay, I'll be around. M7TN.
Speaker C: N7tnd. This is kk7dvi.
Speaker D: Hey, how you doing up there? N7 tmd.
Speaker C: Go ahead. I'm hanging in there. I got a pinched nerve in my neck. I'm doing all right, I guess. They give me a couple of shots. I was heard you talking to Ken down there and is your mom back in the hospital because of that wreck? No, she. She's.
Speaker B: She has.
Speaker D: She's got heart failure. Just, you know, and every now and again she builds up water in her system, even though she's on pills for that, and gets out of control and you got to get in the hospital so she can breathe and everything else. So it was a little bit worse at times. So she was in the hospital for almost a week. I think it'd be a week tomorrow anyways. So they're getting her out and putting her. Putting her in rehab and the facility that she's in. Yeah, she, you know, she. She needs things like nightgowns and a robe and stuff like that. So they're gonna transport her this evening. She'll probably get there around seven o'clock tonight. So I'm running to her house right now. System 19 linked up.
Speaker C: Well, good. That's a good son to take care of his mom like that. Proud of you.
Speaker A: Yeah.
Speaker C: Other than that, what else you been doing other than working? Well, that's about it.
Speaker D: A couple of miners projects around the house in up in Syria. One of the other guys and I are talking about going up to one of our mountaintops, one of our lower ones called Red Mountain. Work on a microwave link, getting intermittent dropouts on, but. But other than that, not a lot. It looks like what I'm seeing on the news looks like the government's gonna bashfully pass the budget before the end of the month, so hopefully we won't have to go into a furlough again. So. Kind of got my fingers crossed on that.
Speaker C: They could get some of that money back to Minnesota. We'd have plenty of money to spend, wouldn't we?
Speaker D: Well, I guess that's part of the rub. They're all Torqued off about what's going on in Minnesota. They're threatening to not pass the budget unless they defund ICE and do all this other stuff. That's a, it's a freaking thing. So I don't know, but it looks promising. It's been doing some stuff kind of in, in, you know, one on one type negotiations and militarization. They've got a path forward, so we'll see. I think they're, the House is vote on Thursday and Senate comes back on to D.C. next week and hopefully they can get it done and get it to Trump before the end of the month.
Speaker C: Sure, yeah, they, yeah, they drag their feet sometimes, but I, they need to get together and start doing stuff, backing him a little I guess to get things done.
Speaker D: Well, you know how it is man, it's, you can't have absolute rule. Right. You got to be able to, you want, you gotta be open to negotiations a little bit in both sides of the aisle. So it looks like they're, they're more in tune to do that.
Speaker C: So anyways, we'll see.
Speaker D: How about you? What you got going on?
Speaker C: I just filled a fire down the basement. I'm just waiting to get it going good so I can shut it, that, shut it down a little bit and go up and watch the news.
Speaker D: Ah, very good, very good.
Speaker C: All right.
Speaker D: That's probably gonna be a late night for me. By the time I get my mom all settled in everything, It'll probably be 9, 8:30, 9 o' clock and I gotta get up early tomorrow, take the wife to the airport. She's going to California for a few days for a show for crafty craft stuff. She's gonna go see some of the, some of the wares that vendors have, the new stuff the vendors have. So I gotta get her, get her up to, I think, I think her flight's early so I gotta probably get to the airport around 5:30 or so tomorrow.
Speaker C: You'll be busy tomorrow then. You work tomorrow too, don't you?
Speaker D: Yeah, but I'll get out to the airport, still be able to make it back to work in 20 or make it to work in plenty of time. I got a couple of meetings at our corporate office tomorrow afternoon which is. We're gonna go late so it'll be a long day. I was, I was hoping her, her flight would correspond with my corporate meeting because our corporate offices are right by the airport. So it would have been an easy one trip, but didn't work out. That way.
Speaker C: I know things don't work out but if I plan on something to work that way. It don't normally work that way. It goes south some way.
Speaker D: So when are you. When do you plan on coming to Vegas? You said you had to come here for some appointments or something. Have you got that kind of passes in yet or not?
Speaker C: Yeah, next month sometime. We go down. We have a dentist over there on Rainbow and get her teeth cleaned and whatever other work we have to done. I've had him for over 30 years. I think I've been going to that dentist. But we got a dental appointment down there next month. I'm not sure what day it is, but as soon as my wife lets me know what day it is, I'll let you know.
Speaker B: Okay?
Speaker A: Yeah.
Speaker D: Well, it sounds good. The. The only week that I'm not available in February is the last. The last week in February I'm gonna be out of town. Yeah, I forgot when the hell it was. Well, I think I've got out of town pretty much all week. I got a. I got business stuff to do Monday through Thursday, then Friday is that. I'm heading down to Yuma for the twoppy for the conduct convention or whatever it is down there. But that's. That's only the last week of February. The rest of the time I'm here.
Speaker C: Is that the ham convention when they got all the radios and stuff going down there?
Speaker D: Yeah, it's a human. The Yuma Ham fest. And it starts whatever the day is, this last Friday of the month, whatever date that is, it starts on Friday and then goes till about noon on Sunday, I think. So we're gonna meet a buddy of mine from the club. We're gonna. We're gonna head down there on Friday. I'll probably leave here Friday morning, get down there, you know, maybe check out the ham thing a little bit around noonish or so. Go check into the hotel around there
Speaker C: for a little bit.
Speaker D: And then Saturday, just hit it all day Saturday and come back on Sunday.
Speaker C: I think that would be fun. You'll have fun doing that, I'm quite sure. Well, I gotta go change, put some more wood on this fire so I can shut it down. So I'm gonna back out to the 73, Ralph, for coming back. All right.
Speaker D: No, yeah, thanks for the shot to the top. And I'll be around 10. 7.
Speaker C: Bpr.
Speaker A: This is.
Speaker B: Hey, RF password there. Pretty noisy though.
Speaker A: This is lql.
Speaker C: Sounds like there's feet back in something talking to itself in 1700.
Speaker B: Yeah, they're still working on it.
Speaker A: They may have the link and the RF link in All Star going. Ah.
Speaker C: And that would explain the. The echo time delay deal. Okay, cool.
Speaker B: Thought that was echo. Link it. All right guys, audio is not recoverable. Star link at 31 active. Kkv from mvt. Copy. Wb6jkv from n670t. Do you copy? Ovt? Go ahead. Wb6kkv this time mobile.
Speaker A: All right, so this sounds clean, right? There's no noise on the link.
Speaker B: Key down again.
Speaker A: Alright, there's a bunch of background noise here with all the fans and stuff and some echo. But this should be on the All Star. So we're going to switch over to the RF link which should be real noisy, but I just want to see what it does.
Speaker B: 32 link up.
Speaker A: Mike, you ready for a test?
Speaker B: I am ready. Go ahead. That's all noise, dude. Could not recover any audio. I can tell you're talking, but that's about the size of it. The rest of which followed. All star link at 31 active.
Speaker A: All right, this should be via ip. Is it better?
Speaker B: I can even hear the fan noises and everything in the building. Yeah, way more.
Speaker A: All right, so yeah, the other way was the RF link and that's with the new antenna. And no down tilt and only one watt reflected at the hundred out. So it's something definitely up at 30. At 30, that's not happy. So I gotta tweak levels now. So I gotta open up this controller and do that. So I might start, you know, doing something here or set some tones or need some audio from you and vice versa.
Speaker B: My full attention, dude. I'm not going anywhere. So yeah, everybody's aware there's coming and the guys in Vegas know it's coming. They said cool, bring it on, man. Good luck.
Speaker A: I forgot about those poor guys. I should disconnect them so I don't have to put up with that. All right, I'll be back in a bit. N672.
Speaker B: Yeah, Ross, no problem. Leave it connected, man. If there's a link that comes comes on, it disconnects automatic. Not a link on that. If the net comes on, it disconnects automatically anyway, so. All right. Stuck in traffic. WB60K mobile, Redwood City.
Speaker C: Yeah, we're good. Tom in Vegas. Good luck, man. I'll be listening in 17.
Speaker B: Quick question for you. Okay. What flavor of bluetooth mic were you using the other day? That sounded okay. Sounds so good. I think I might want to get one. Enrico.
Speaker C: I n r I c o. Looking at it right now.
Speaker B: Enrico. I used to work for their cousin alinko, so. Yeah, I can remember that.
Speaker C: Yeah, a special costume.
Speaker A: 30 bucks.
Speaker C: I like it.
Speaker B: Yeah, you sound great with it, man, as long as you don't drop packets in the process. But that's not the mic. We know that.
Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, that's a speaker mic. And charge it on usbc. And it just runs for freaking ever, man.
Speaker B: Just.
Speaker C: I know I use it intermittently when I'm in my car. I have yet to charge the damn thing back up. I don't even know what the battery level is like, but it.
Speaker B: It runs. Oh, if it's USB C, it might be sucking juice out of the source, you know?
Speaker C: Yeah, I don't have it plugged in anything. I plugged it in when I bought it, charged it up all the way, and it's been on battery ever since, so.
Speaker B: I don't know.
Speaker C: But. Yeah, works like a champ.
Speaker B: Sounds good. All right, just.
Speaker A: We'll shut up and let the guys
Speaker B: do their thing down there. Unless they want us to talk so they can set levels.
Speaker A: Who knows?
Speaker B: But anyway. Oh, that's what they wanted. They would ask.
Speaker A: All right.
Speaker B: Listening. WB6GTV thanks, Ralph. Got it.
W e6a x n repeater.
All right. Jkv, you still there? I be there. Give me some full throated audio, if you would. At home, I take the ifr, put it on the bench on the outdoor antenna and throw one back at you. But there you go. Testes, testees. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Hello, radio, audio and all that good stuff. All right, take a break. Let me. I just wanted to get a baseline before I started making any changes here. So as they say, stand by for standby. That's maybe a maybe. Want me to throw a DTMF at ya, or is that muted by the time he gets down there? Yeah, that's muted. Hey, come on.
Speaker A: Who's that? And from where. Again? I can put out a row tone here to the All Star if you need it. So where does it generate it from? Ddal? Is it from the server, the hub, or from you or something else? It comes right straight from All Star. In this case it would come from the 750, the main hub and it would go through All Star. Well, wait a minute. Is it being generated at on the voltage your server, isn't that where it would be generated from? And then hit the back of one and hit the RF hub and yada yada? More or less. Yeah, it would come from the the Voltor server straight to your node there in Santiago. But yeah, it would come out over all the the All Star nodes. But it's basically, you know, straight from. From the Vulture straight into your Santiago hub.
Speaker B: Let me give you a little sample. Oh, they just went away. They're all
Speaker A: start just shut off down there. Maybe they bumped the electrical cable.
Speaker B: Doing that happens.
Speaker A: We are a little noisy. Sorry, I doubled. Looks like Ralph disconnected too. Okay, well anyways, the mobile station. Yeah, go ahead. We're just doing some testing here. Yeah, sorry. You're super scratchy. Yeah, with the new telewave run nowadays around 1500 or something like that. So. Yeah,
Speaker B: Yeah, back in the
Speaker A: 70s when I bought a 10db stick from Cell Wave, the amateur price was 282.12. Right. Shipped to my front door. Man, those. Those things are well over a grand now.
Mike, Was that the skate hole or is down by the Dish or Woodside Road somewhere? It never used to be that bad. From there, It's all scratchy except. I don't know, it's nice and clear. Go figure. It's a 7DBI antenna and at 35 watts going into it, but yeah, I'm doing the same here also.
The low road today. Yep, that's recommended. Look, I probably should have got off an Avalon. Oh, well, stick with it.
D.
W6 rhc repeater check 3. The PIERS Monthly general membership meetings are held on the third Monday night of the month at the Butte County Public Library, 1108 Sherman Avenue in Chico. Doors open at 6pm and the meeting starts at 7pm all are welcome.
Speaker A: N6kne. N6kne. From n6mvt. Go ahead there, daddy. All right, I think we're back on. Can we try this one more time with that tone? You betcha. How. How long? How many seconds? Maybe just five seconds for this first time. And warning to anybody listening. Could get loud, could get ugly.
Speaker B: Apologies in advance.
Speaker A: Turn your volume down and protect the dog's ears. All right, here it goes. We have full duplex, so. All right, that's good. So now give me some audio. As loud as you can. Just, you know, steady loud. Audio like that. And 6 kn e t. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Why do I hear a tone?
Speaker B: Trying to make you grip, I'll bet.
Speaker A: I hate it to it. Oh, just like I did it. Hang on. My bad. Not responding very quickly. Okay, sorry about that. Do you want me to do some more audio? I'm trying to think.
Speaker B: You're sounding gravelly on my end there, Ken.
Speaker A: So you say that's generated on the hub, right on the server? Well, it's global, so it goes out over all of the all Star stuff. Are you saying I'm having packet loss there, Mike?
Speaker B: No, I think you're on the verge of cutting out. It was distorting a lot. That's all milk I had lost, though.
Speaker A: Hey, do me a favor, will you guys talk back and forth? Oh, are you kidding me? Kidding me. Duplex. So go. Go ahead there, Mike. I'm gonna dial up 35 here and then. Let's see. Gotta find that.
Speaker B: I think I can hear 35 in my driveway. I just gotta find it. 900 memory radio.
Speaker A: All right. All right, hold on a second. All right, say kb. Give me some audio.
Speaker B: When I.
Speaker A: Sure.
Speaker B: You want lots of audio or just normal audio?
Speaker A: Just normal for now. All right.
Speaker B: Find normal there unit. All right, testing, testing. One, two, three. Hello, radio. And yeah, I actually parked in a door in front of house because the house is underway. Normally I can hear 35 no problem. So anyway, can't do flex. So anyways, all right, I will unkey.
Speaker A: All right. And Ken, can you give me some audio? How much wood can a wood Chuck chuck? If a wood. If a wood Chuck Chuck. Chuck, Chuck.
Speaker B: Right.
Speaker A: Yeah, that's the one. You got it.
Speaker B: Hey, Tom, I'm parked in front of my house, right? And I'm watching the S meter on my mobile here.
Speaker C: From the.
Speaker A: From 32, which house is in the way?
Speaker B: Right, but normally it's slam dunk to the peg.
Speaker A: It's.
Speaker B: It's dropping down to three quarter scale and then going up to the peg. So, yeah, I gotta take a trip up the mountaintop. Go bring some test gear, give this thing a good shakedown. All right. How's that?
Speaker A: All right, but remember, POC is cheap.
Speaker B: I resemble that.
Speaker A: Please, you don't. You need. I need you to listen to audio from RF and from All Star. So right now, Ken and I are All Star. So we need somebody up there on the RF ranked things to talk to you. So let's see if there's somebody up there in the bay like. Charlie, are you around? Or anybody?
Speaker B: Go inside and grab the handheld, man. My dinner's probably getting cold.
Speaker A: All right. Looking for somebody who is actually on a repeater. Is that what you're asking for? Yeah, but in Northern California. Besides Mike, I want him to hear somebody on the RF side compared to us. How about the other Mike? Are you still listening? Reading mike. Grg.
Speaker B: He's hitting mike.
Speaker A: He's out feeding animals.
Speaker B: The grg for a while. You're not full gliding.
Speaker C: It's not a loud mouth like you.
Speaker A: Who was that? Okay, and which system are you on? Repeater. I didn't copy that. Slow down a little bit. I'm down in la, so there's some delays and links and stuff like that. One more time. A little bit smart.
Speaker C: Yeah, I get it. Runs are under. Yeah, that's on the coast side.
Speaker A: Repeater. Well, let's see. Ajkb, are you there?
Speaker B: Yep, I'm still here.
Speaker A: All right, let's do this between the two of you listening to each other and listening to me. And then I'll let Ken talk, too. Let's see how we all compare Level life.
Speaker B: We got George in South City. He can pop on here. From his face, he's nice and full quieting. So hopping.
Speaker A: Hop on the link here, George. This is november 6th.
Speaker B: Golf, kc, romeo, N60 coming in. Coming in.
Speaker A: Straight into Ulster. Go ahead, Tom. All right, that was Ken. This is me. You guys talk between you two and see how we all compare over on your side. I'm 32.
Speaker B: Sound about the same to me. So, yeah, George, go ahead, take one.
Speaker A: And Mike.
Speaker B: Not George first, then Michael.
Speaker A: See what happens.
Speaker C: Does sound good.
Speaker A: Even volume sounds like you got it tweaked.
Speaker C: Go ahead.
Speaker A: Waiting for Christmas.
Speaker C: Wfc?
Speaker A: Yeah, No, I was.
Speaker C: What is it down south? The sound good? Mic sounds loud. I don't know, George. Sounds a little weak to me.
Speaker A: So I don't know KV6WC, but you
Speaker B: got white noise on you.
Speaker A: That's kind of.
Speaker B: Kind of rare.
Speaker A: Monthly fourth bench radio. And you got antenna Problems or whatever on 32. Two, three, two, two. And, Ken, go ahead and talk a little bit, too, after I unkey. And then one more time on jkv.
Speaker B: Hello. Hello.
Speaker A: N6 kne here. Chinaopa, Columbia. Go ahead there, JKV.
Speaker B: Actually gotta go break out a map and figure out where you are, man. Yeah, you're definitely down there in the south 40. WP6, JKV. Testing, testing.
Speaker A: All right, you guys are sounding pretty good to us. So between Ken and me and you guys hearing each other, are we, you know, fairly close. I mean, the All Star is always going to sound better than. But, you know, and you guys are not. You're all on the same repeater. That's. So it's kind of cheating, but at least a sanity check. Tom, I don't know if it's helpful. I can go straight to Vaca and turn on the parrot. Do you want me to do that? I don't think we need to, honestly. It would be nice if maybe Gar or somebody can get on a different repeater than 32, maybe over on Carla 5 and give us some audio from there, because that'll be a different repeat going through the hub. And that would be. Make it from here. 19, system 19, link. Optimus, Was that you, mike?
Speaker B: In the way, but there it is.
Speaker A: All right, well, you're still sounding good. How am I still. Can you flip back and forth, maybe, and just compare. And also, if you can flip back and forth and I'll listen.
Speaker B: Sounds the same. 19.
Speaker A: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Test, test, test.
Speaker B: And here's on 32, which is probably better quieting, but audio is probably the
Speaker A: same, only B68 KB. Test, test, test. All right. I'm told I better put the COVID on before I let the smoke out or do something stupid.
Speaker B: Hey, Mike, how's it sound to you?
Speaker C: I think you guys all sound good, but I.
Speaker A: What is it?
Speaker C: 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, 5?
Speaker A: I think so.
Speaker C: How do I sound any better?
Speaker B: You're on the same one that I was on. What about Hayward?
Speaker A: You know, when you're going and you're
Speaker B: looking at the E. East Bay hills, if you look a little to the right, you'll see it. Yeah, you mean like it used to, huh?
Speaker A: Hello, Shasta county, this is the United States calling. Do you copy?
Speaker B: Over.
Speaker A: Please.
W e6a x m repeater.
Speaker A: Okay, very good. I'm the one in LA right now. Look, I'm up on the mountaintop looking out over the whole LA Basin, and, wow, this is a beautiful night. All the lights and some pictures, dude. Sky over the ocean. I gotta snap a picture around. This is. This is pretty cool. Are you on 25 right now, or are you on 30? 36 or something like. All right, you're on Carla 6. Are you able to get into 25 at all? Do you have that? Well, you're on Carla 6, I think. 443075. That is the Carla 6 street heater. Carla 25. I don't have that memorized. I got it. So you'd have to look it up. I got it. The 25 is 444-32-5. 444-32-5. If you see that one programmed into your radio there, and the cone is 173.8. All right, Copy that. Standing by. N672. All right, I'm going inside. Have to throw my finger in the microwave.
Speaker B: Q5, anybody copy?
Speaker A: All right, thanks, Mike. And, yeah, station ready to copy. Fine. Hopefully you still copy me. I got a bunch of fan noise in the background here, but you are coming through okay.
Speaker B: Yeah, I did switch over to Carla Redding. I think you have a tiny bit less noise on this. About the same signal. And thank you for the visuals of the LA Basin and twinkling lights. And I think you said you got a little ocean there, so that's a nice visual in the dark woods right now, so not much visual.
Speaker A: That's all right. They're both beautiful in their own way, right? At least I think that's what my wife tells me. Or something like that. All right, well, hey, you came in at a great time, so thank you for the assistance there. And I think I'm gonna let things cool down and finish whatever else we got loose here, try and pack things up and get out of here. In 6. Candy, I'll be clear and listening. All right, thanks, kid. We'll be here. As I'm sure you know that we still got stuff to button up and go down in the dark. So y' all okay, real quick. Still no port forwarding. Standby, Ken. All right, sir, cross traffic here. Go ahead with what you're trapping. Just to confirm, no port forwarding. Oh, yes, affirm. You could try, but nothing. Nothing's been done that I'm aware of. Okey doke. All right, I'll be listening N6 knee. All right.
W e6a x n receiver.
The Gears Net will be held Tuesday night starting at 7:30pm all amateur radio operators are welcome to join in on the net W6RHC repeater check 1.
All right, that's home on the bofang, The B word. WP6, JKV. And this thing probably doesn't sound anything like the mobile, like the A2, but, hey, you know, So he's also for Bueno. Bueno on this side. Good job there, unit. Well, it was a team effort and a village, you know, but, you know, it's still the same day, so I think we're in good shape. Looks like we still got a couple wires to hook up for the analog voltage. And we gotta test the batteries. Put new batteries in and test the cutover and things like that, but anyway. All right, we'll be here. And 672, thanks. Last unit on the bow. Fang, you sound perfect. Absolutely fantastic. K9 Kad. All right. Very good. Well, thank you.

Speaker B: Yes, I am.
Speaker A: Did you mean to cut off early?
Speaker B: No, but you know. Yeah, I'm headed that way. Okay.
Speaker A: You're the first one I heard on the air.
Speaker B: Well, it's a little early yet, but I want to get there and set up the projector and get logged into their network because I've got a presentation to do tonight. Actually, it's not so much of a presentation. Let's go to this website and look around. Okay. In the meantime, I'm leaving a clogged drain behind.
Speaker A: Maybe it might fix itself by the time you get back.
Speaker C: Right?
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm thinking not. It has clogged up both toilets and I've got it backing up into the
Speaker D: shower pan and the bathtub.
Speaker A: Well, if you need a 50 foot, rather large snake, let me know.
Speaker B: Well, I have a short snake that I guess I could put through the toilet, but I'm not sure how effective that would be.
Speaker A: Yeah, it just sounds like it's in here. Sounds like it's in the main.
Speaker B: Yes, that's what it sounds like, doesn't it? And we've had that before, but it's been a long time. It hasn't done that much since we took the tree out front that was putting the roots into the drain system.
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm just saying if you need a 50 foot, like professional snake, let me know. I have one. It's one of those ones you can exchange the teeth on it and you have the foot pedal and it likes to wrap around you.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm not sure I'd know what to do with it. I don't think I want to put it through the toilet.
Speaker A: No, you open up your vent and you stick it in your vent.
Speaker B: I got a couple of people that have decided that, you know, it's a convenient for them to go into the wrong lane. So I'm coming up to them and I've got these headlights, you know, right in my eyes and I really can't tell where they are.
Speaker A: Ah,
Speaker C: in W.
Speaker B: Go ahead.
Speaker C: Hey, guys. Chris, this is Stephen.
Speaker B: The meeting is still behind the old
Speaker C: Burger King, is that correct? Marysville?
Speaker B: That is correct.
Speaker A: That's Steve. It's not Burger King and Tabit now,
Speaker C: hopefully on time, pending traffic. Anyway, didn't mean to interrupt. Sorry about your plumbing situation.
Speaker B: Yeah, me too. Who wants to go with a clogged drain all night long?
Speaker A: Steven, it's not a Burger King anymore.
Speaker B: Cabot.
Speaker C: Oh, yeah, copy. Yeah, the new habit, I guess. I heard that place is pretty good. Still gotta try it. Anyway, again, sorry for interrupting. Ke6inw I'll see you guys up there.
Speaker B: See you shortly. Yeah. So I don't think I'm gonna work on it tonight. Yeah, I think I'm gonna call. Not Roto Rooter. Who's the other one? Rapid Rooter. Tomorrow. They've done my stuff.
Speaker A: Okay with you out there or are you on Septic or City?
Speaker B: Okay, who knows? Maybe you know, there are still roots in there, but they've just grown back there much slower than they did before.
Speaker A: Yeah, I just didn't know if you'd be in the keyhole if you were on City or Septic.
Speaker B: Gonna be fun doing without the toilet for an evening. No
Speaker A: coffee can,
Speaker B: I guess? Bucket. That gets cleaned out really well after we've used it. Yeah. Well, I'm here.
Speaker C: See when you get here.
Speaker B: Okay. I'm just coming up over the bridge, so I be just a couple of minutes.
Speaker D: I got one word for you, Chris. Actually, it's two words. Gatorade bottles and 60 NY.
Speaker B: That works for one part of it. The other part's not so great.
Speaker D: Now that could get a little messy.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, you gonna be joining us tonight or you just on.
Speaker A: On the
Speaker B: air? While you're out and about doing your work,
Speaker D: I'm motoring towards the.
Speaker B: Towards the meeting.
Speaker D: So I'm passing up Walmart now in Yuba City.
Speaker B: Alrighty Zappa then. Yeah, it'd be nice to see you. Haven't seen you for a while.
Speaker D: Count your blessings. I haven't gotten any prettier. Oh, yeah?
Speaker B: Let's see if the light stays green for me or whether it's going to turn yellow. Made it okay,
Speaker D: good deal. All right, Chris. Well, see you when I get there, bud.
Speaker A: And 60 in line.
Speaker B: All right. Esm. KK60.

Speaker B: worse. Well, yeah, my thing is sounding mighty
Speaker A: fine. All right, well, we're still here. So how's the road up there again? What town do you drive out of to head up there? I'm just curious.
Speaker B: All right, so it should be an ounce and on battery right now. It's not.
Speaker A: Silverado, I think is the nearest town. Check, check. Yeah, and on the road, you know, I've seen worse. I've seen better. So it's somewhere in between crappy and extra crappy. Yeah, I've been to a couple down there. Let's see, Mount Wilson was one. There's another one that went to back in the metro call days. I forget which one. But back then those roads weren't bad.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, Fred said this used to be worse,
Speaker A: but, you know, a lot of sharp shale and stuff, and they've greeted it a lot. So, you know, I mean, it was. It was. Wasn't great, wasn't, you know, whatever. But it is what it is as long as I don't get a flat tire. So the. The moon is cool over the. Over the basin here. I just don't think my camera phone's gonna do it justice. Yeah, surprisingly, my Samsung does really well at night and take some badass moon pictures and all that kind of good stuff, so. All right. I'm okay. Judge thought needed some reinforcement. Oh, here we are.
Speaker B: Okay. Oh, actually, it's
Speaker A: shown up. It's pretty cool. All right, we gotta figure out why it's not announcing song battery now. All right, I'll catch up with you. Thanks. N6MBT. Check. WP6 KKBA. Killing.

Charlie and 6mbt, N. 6 mbt and 6 koa. Yeah, I got 29 and 30, but not 31, so I don't know what's going on. All right, well, I didn't hear you at all. That's weird. You try it again. Okay, stand by. Trying 31. Okay, that was 39. You want me to do 29 again? Sure. All right, one more time for 29. System29link check in. All right, there was 29. 29 checked in. All right, well, I. I saw TR activity before, so you would. Tried it a few things after we texted. Because I'm assuming. Because I didn't see. I didn't. Nothing came up here. It's almost like some kind of timer had shut off the port or something. Yes, affirmative. Tried a couple things after we texted and we did get. We did get 29 to respond on the second try, so previous to that, we did get 30 to check in, so I don't know. Which means 4 and 19 are working. All right, well, the DTMS thing is one thing, but there's some kind of weird activity thing here that I seem to have noticed, so. All right, have to see if we can figure anything out. Thank you for now. Okay, roger that. This was through 16. I could go over to 17 and. And try too. No, but tell you what, let me power cycle the controller and see, and then I'll have to text you because I don't want to key up here and trigger it. And I'll. I'll text you to test and we'll watch the cor light and see if anything happens. Does that make sense? Absolutely. At the coa at Ximi T. Yeah, sure, just let me know. Thank you, Tom. Hang on, hang on one second. I just made some changes to vodka because he's going through his vodka. Charlie, can you try it one more time? Try your duty lamp tone. Yes, absolutely. Can try one more time. Here goes to 31 again. See, I didn't hear any beeps at all that time. Let me. Let me try one more thing here. This is something I meant to play with. If I heard you guys trying to use dtmf. Tone. Give me one second. All right, standing by. Let me know I can go over to 17 over there. If there's a little glitchy thing like there is sometimes between 17 and the hub, And32 is always solid to the hub. Okay, well, maybe Mike can give it a try. All the site testing participation can ask for much better auto tune. Sounds like the tones aren't being routed through the all star path. Perhaps, but I'll bet you by the time I'm key and we'll have it all figured out. Charlie, it sounds like you're holding the DTMF down, what, maybe a full second on each button. Is that correct? Does that sound about right, or two seconds? Yeah, probably about one second. I can go faster than that, but, you know, I did, I guess, did get responses from 29 and 30, but I can make it quicker. That would be better. Okay, let me make one more change, and then if I don't hear the tones, we'll go back the other direction. This has always been something kind of funky. So go ahead. All right. N6,086. Okay, there we go. Let me know if I need to speed up the tone. No, I'm hearing just a little bit of a tone for just a fraction of a second. I was hoping that what I was doing was going to let more of that through, but it doesn't seem to. So let me go the other direction and see what happens. Give me one second. N6 kne. All right, sitting by 60 away. Okay. And. All right, Charlie, go ahead. Ah, did you hear that, Tom? I heard the tone. I heard more of the tone that time. They're muted, but I thought I saw the LED light here. Go ahead again, Charlie. Los Angeles link up. Okay, I just got a Los Angeles link up message from the controller down there. This is kind of Los Angeles link up message. We'll try the other zones here. This is system 34 one link check in. Well, did you get a response? Yes, affirmative. This is Los Angeles link check in. So these were touch tones generated from an app on my cell phone. So the spacing is, is more full better. All right, but now you got to do it on a radio to see if it'll still work because Ken made a change. Yeah, the changes I'm making are allowing the tones to come. Come over the air longer, longer duration. So it sounds like now with the setting, it's 5,000 instead of 1,000. It's letting the tones come through the entire time. He's holding down the key. All right, well, go ahead, Charlie, through the radio, if you could. Affirmative. Through the radio with the radio microphone. Okay, through the radio with the radio microphone. No response from 31. All right, we didn't, we didn't see the LED DPMS decoder light here. So what was the difference between that and your phone amp? Well, I think the phone app for the DTMF tones is more, is better space between the tones. So I don't know if that matters or not when I do it on the microphone. I'm getting, you know, local tones here on the microphone, so I don't know how that's affecting the situation either. You guys want me to try it? Yeah, let me go find my cheat sheet. Since you want to just text me the string. All right, I'll send it to you. All right. Directly into the hub. All right. But, Charlie, you're able to get 29 and 30, but that was because that's on the RF side. So it's. Yeah, it's the All Star site that things are getting stopped and muted somewhere. I'm ready to give it a shot. All right, go ahead. Try a little slower. Sure. Just the laugh. I'm hearing your first two tones clearly, then the other one not so clear. That's a bovang for you. Let me. Let me try. Oh, let me try the white Belinko. Tom. I'm checking the settings now on the main hub. See if I can find it there. I'm not seeing the adjustments from the main hood. That's the ASL3 over there. So I. I misunderstood. I. I didn't realize that Charlie was trying two different things. I made some adjustments, and I started to hear the tones and thought that was something I was doing. All right, so have we never gotten this to work, then, through All Stars? Yeah, but see, that's the thing. I'm on All Star. I'm not using any radio or any repeaters or anything. Just fine. I was hearing all of his tones. So if it's making it through the system on the phone app. And why isn't it making it through the repeaters? I don't know. So that tells me the All Star stuff is working. Give me one second. I'm going to turn on parrot. I'm going to do a couple of. Of PTMF tones myself, and I want to see what they sound like. If you have time for that. Yeah, I just load in the truck. All right, here goes. And 6K and E. Oh, I gotta wait for it to respond. Audio level is pretty good. N6k. Any. Oh, I gotta wait for it to respond. Okay, here it goes again. N6 kne testing. TTMS. Audio levels is normal. Okay, here it goes again. N6 kne testing DTMs. N6kne.n6koa. I'm hearing the button pushes or whatever, but I'm not hearing any tone. Okay, let me try the admin hub. See, because I'm actually coming in on the admin hub. Let me try that one and see if I. See if I hear it. One second.

Now this net meets each and every Tuesday evening at 7:30pm right here on the W6RHC repeater for the purpose of fellowship through Amateur radio. Is there any emergency or priority traffic? All right, general announcements. We had the GEARS meeting last night and Chris is our new club president. He did a pretty good job with it if you ask me. We had an interesting presentation about, about HAM radio and, and the, and the kids. So is there any other announcements for the net? Please just come with your call sign. KN6PWW. Go ahead, Jamie. I'd like to remind you all that there is CW class tomorrow at the Golden Beaver still house. I believe that's 2420 Park Ave. Here in Chico. That's at 6pm and show up. Looks like I've been coerced to show up again. So anyway, go there. Folks that have been attending consistently, I know, are all making CW contact. That's it for me. K6PWW. Jamie, where is Winterfield Day and POTA? Good one. Winter Field Day is going to be this weekend, Saturday and Sunday. We're combining that with our monthly poda. That will be at the Thermalito forebay in. I believe that's off Gardner Lane in Oroville. You should see it as you drive in the forebay. It is directly to the right as you're coming in the entrance. So yep, it's pretty much all day both days. I am only going to be there Sunday but I know there's going to be a good contingent on both days. Thank you very much. So Winterfield Day this Saturday, Sunday at the Thermolito Forpe. Are there any other announcements for the net W6Js? Tom, Amy, you're picking a good time. It's supposed to get down Sunday to 36 degrees in the morning, so. Oh boy. Just a reminder, testing coming up not this Sunday, but the next Sunday. Any need anybody needs an upgrade or. It looks like it's not as fun or easy or free as it seems to be. Anyway, have a good weekend this weekend, you guys. Seven three. I'll be in and out tonight. Katie. Six lok. Thank you very much for the check in. Doug. Yeah, for the poda, the library does have a limited number, like maybe one or two day passes to get into the, into the state parks. But I've never inquired about how many they have or how easy they are to get. So if you want to try that and assuming you have a library card, my call ahead and call the front desk and ask them the the situation. Thank you, Doug. N60 UK. Clarence and Porn. You just kicked me in and out tonight. Thank you and have a good night. Seven three, everybody. Thank you, Clarence. I've got you checked in. K6 Gab. Hey, good evening. This is Greg, K6 Gab in Chico. All right, how about the swap segment? Do we have any, anybody that wants any ham radio related items they'd like to buy, sell, trade or whatever? Please come with your call sign. Go ahead, Jamie. This isn't actually a request to buy, sell or trade anything but kind of an announcement for the Net, I guess I'd like to remind you all that we're putting together a group buy for from QRP Labs for QRP radios for film kit. So if you want to go that way, get a hold of. All right, thank you, Jamie. Anybody else? All right, let's do the roundtable. Jamie, anything else to add? KN60WW here, you know, not really, but I would like to thank Chris for being president and for really a very good meeting last night. I like the additions to the meeting. Good stuff. Really good turnout last night as well. And that's about it for me. K6KWW. Thank you very much, Jamie. This is Jim, K6EST calling role and I don't have anything to add so let's go to Larry, KF6NCX. Good evening, Jim. And this is Larry, KF6NCX in Chico. Well, I've been hearing about a solar storm that's had an impact on us and I think I might have experienced it today. Got on the radio, I think it was about 11 or so and gee, I didn't hear any stations on any of the bands and a friend of mine said he got on, he tried transmitting about that same time on 40 and 20 and didn't see anything on the reverse beacon network. I did hear about an hour later a couple of stations on 15 meters and one of them was taking part in that straight key month special event that's been going on all, all this month. Try to work special event stations on using your straight key. And I worked this guy in Ohio, he was in eight land, had a, had an aid in his call sign wanted to. The aims of this event is to try to get a sweep by working someone in each of those 10 fall areas. I had already worked someone in a. So that didn't help me. But with, with another week or so left I've got, I still need to get someone in the one fall area and someone in the five hall area. So I'm hoping that happens before the end of the month. That's about it for me. This is Larry kfxncs. Back to you Jim. Thank you very much Larry. Yeah, some people were getting seeing the Aurora. I saw some pictures on Facebook this morning. People went up to the lookout on the skyway and other places and we're able to see the Aurora from this area. So that's pretty, pretty interesting. Tom W6js I had a couple things. It was a very very good meeting and Jamie will always be my president. He'd done a wonderful job for the last two sessions. Hope Jamie don't get a big jack in a box head but we're in good hands now I believe. Anyway, we had two ladies, Rose Marie which is going to need a little mentoring to understand even what ham radio is. But the other lady, I didn't quite catch her name but I asked her a couple questions and I asked her why do you want who a ham and boy she hit it right on Amazon to increase her get her mind working so she, she's gonna make a good hand but we got to get her away from Orville. She wants to take the test or come to Orville or something so maybe we can swing her over to our club but I, I think she'll still gobble up the information and get her ham license real easy. Other than that Jim, I'll take care of you in a moment morning and take your car to get it serviced so just give me a time. All right Then I'll pick you up too and drop you off. So just tell me what time I owe that to you. This is Tom W6JS thank you very much Tom. Except it's, it's going to be Friday but I will give you a call and let you know as soon as I know the appointment time. Thank you very much. See Bill in Cape K6KC6UFE. Billing Cafe Good evening to group. Yeah, rough copy. Rough operating conditions since Sunday. Up and down that's for sure and we're right in the bullseye. Hopefully things will calm down before the weekend. So there's the skies out for winter field day. I'm going to operate from the home QTH where it's nice and warm and I'm not really interested in operating photo so I'll leave that up to the rest of you guys. Other than that 73 to the group. Back to you Jim K6UFE. Thank you very much Bill. And that is the list as I have it. Do we have any, any late check ins or anybody else come now with your call sign. Any additional comments before we close the net? Come with your call sign. All right, then. Then. This is Jim K6 EST closing the net at 740pm you're of course, invited back next week. 73s to all in. K6 EST is clear.
It. W6js. Jamie, you're picking a good time. It's supposed to get down Sunday to 36 degrees in the morning, so. Oh boy. Just a reminder, testing coming up. Not this Sunday, but the next Sunday. Anybody needs an upgrade or. I know we got a few people lined up and so see you there at the oaks Lodge at 2 o'. Clock.
Hey, good evening. This is Greg K6 Gab in Chico. I'm in and out this in and out this evening. Thanks for doing the net.
Speaker A: N6 kne testing gpmf. Audio level is normal. And six kne testing gtms. Okay. Yeah, sorry. We're back to square one. I don't know. Know. I don't know what's going on with that. Sounds like it's instantly beauty. Got a lot of white noise on you. Yeah. You're dropping out, Jeff. We're hearing the cones, but you're dropping out. They're not all making. I was trying some DTMF stuff on this end, so I might have been muting.
Speaker B: Okay, I'll
Speaker A: be listening. N6 canning. We'll get this figured out someday.
Speaker B: Make sure this works locally. This is
Speaker A: system 32 lynch at this is system 32 lynch. Love for the car. It.
Don't need that, do we?
Speaker A: This is system 32, lake champion. This is system 32, lake champion. 29 link shaft vehicle. All right, that worked.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's because it's the analog back route. Yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker C: It confirms it works with the. The B word. Radio. Well, sorry, seven. I think seven's on all star.
Speaker B: Seven's messed up. That hasn't had a zoning tweet. You can try, but don't hold your breath. Really low out of this thing.
Speaker A: This is system 19. Link shaft in on AC power at 19.
Speaker B: I'm hearing those tones. Come to All Star. No problem.
Speaker C: Okay, 19 was half generated here. Four for half generated.
I had a couple things. It was a very, very good meeting. And Jamie will always be my president. He's done a wonderful job for the last two sessions. Hope Jamie don't get a big jack in the box head, but we're in good hands now, I believe. Anyway, we had two ladies, Rose Marie, which is going to need a little mentoring to understand even what ham radio is. But the other lady, I didn't quite catch her name, but I asked her a couple of questions and I asked her, why do you want to be a ham? And boy, she hit it right on it to increase her get her mind working. So she's going to make a good ham. But we got to get her away from Orville. W e6.
Finally. Yeah, no kidding.
Speaker A: K6isq mobile.
Speaker B: What are you going to do with two of those? Well, first I got to figure out
Speaker A: if both of them work and I'll take the best one and find a home for the other one.
Speaker B: Maybe. Don't ask me why. You know, out of the two, I think I would appreciate the, the Heath kit more. Just because it's a Heath kit.
Speaker A: Oh, I understand that. But the Kenwood has so much more stuff on the backside.
Speaker B: Yeah. So if you figure out, you know, the real utility to it, you'll have to tell it. Boy.
Speaker A: But I will tell you, back when I first got my tech, I used to think, you know, you buy the radio for how many knobs it has on there.
Speaker B: Oh yeah, yeah. Well, it's still kind of true, isn't it?
Speaker A: No more the whole, that all depends on which what type of radio you're using.
Speaker B: No, actually you don't need so many knob pitches and then dials and stuff like that because all that functionality is buried in a menu.
Speaker A: Menus and board.
Speaker B: I'd still like to see, I really, I'd like, I'd like to see a tube set put up and operated.
Speaker A: Yeah, those, those were a bit different because you didn't have all the frequencies you have nowadays. You got what that crystal would give you and that's it.
Speaker B: Oh yeah. I know one band for radio.
Speaker A: Yeah, actually, I mean, I have my, my amp, that's that tube. But that's a new, newer one. I mean, It's Meritron or Astron 811.
Speaker B: Well, isn't still kind of true that the amps are pretty much still all tubed?
Speaker A: You can buy mine new and it's still tubed. Yeah, but it all depends on what, on what you're wanting and everything. I mean, I, I, the first Ampi Bob was a mobile one that had Mosfets in it.
Speaker B: Oh yeah. Okay. Well, I don't think that I have anything to compare to, you know, two units that you got in my 12, but I gotta start digging stuff out.
Speaker A: How many hds do you have?
Speaker B: I don't know exactly. 20 plus.
Speaker A: Oh, wow.
Speaker B: Of course, you know, some of those are the, are some of the ones that were being tossed at work and I think saved.
Speaker A: Ah, like those CP200.
Speaker B: Yeah, exactly. But a lot of them are like, you know, somebody come up with something new and it adds some other, other feature, some feature on it. It's like, gee, that looks like a neat feature. I gotta try that.
Speaker A: So do you still have those? Gosh, I think they were a Motorola. UHF mobile.
Speaker B: Not Motorola. I might have one or two. Kenworth.
Speaker A: It might have been a Kenwood. It was, oh gosh, two, three years ago when I came over.
Speaker B: I think those were Kenwood. And yes, I still have one or two. And those are like, you know, Chris, you don't need them. You need to get rid of them. You need. The problem is finding somebody to give it to that's going to use it and not just have it. Because as they can.
Speaker A: I'll have to get a hold of you later off the air.
Speaker B: Yeah, okay. All right. Well, you know. Yeah, just, you know, I would, I would, I could bring some of those in, but the people that would take them would be the ones that wouldn't really use them.
Speaker A: Oh, yeah, I understand. Trust me.
Speaker B: Well, yeah, like to find somebody that is really interested in. And also getting on GMRs because those, you know, won't do anything else. But.
Speaker A: Yep.
Speaker B: Besides those two big things, did you end up with anything else?
Speaker A: No, the only thing else I put in for was the soldering gun and the soldering iron.
Speaker B: Okay. All right. You probably don't need those either because you probably already have some.
Speaker A: Yeah, I have like three or four. I keep on collecting them. So if one goes bad, I have another one and having two places of storage, you know.
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. I just remembered I'm almost home and I'll get to go in and be confronted with the clogged drain.
Speaker A: Yeah. And that's the wrong drain to be clogged. W E6A X N repeater.

Speaker B: The only problem with that is that I think that that would blow whatever it was up through the drains and through the other toilet and not force the. Not force out, you know, the clock.
Speaker A: That is true. I forgot. I didn't think about that.
Speaker B: All right, Mike. Well, I'm home so I gotta go in and tell my wife the bad news. Have a great evening and we'll talk to you later. 73 KK6VZD. Clear. You as well.

All right, units are back to civilization yet, and this MVP will be a P6K. Now. And I think we've taken the wrong turn somewhere. Oh, crap. That's pretty much what we said, plus a few other choice words, but we came up to two locked gates, which I don't have a key for, so some of this ain't looking familiar. And Fred's not on, so I might need to have you text him or something and see if he can come up on the local. Oh, you're talking about bread. Yeah. Why are he. Yeah, I don't have his contact stuff, but I do. I can just give it to you right here. All right, hang on. Let me get some writing implements here.
Okay. All right. Stand by. One second. What, you're out of cellular coverage or something? Well, sort of. Kinda. Actually, hold on. I might have. Something just came through here, so let me see. Should have that covered for texting. Yeah, even mine works. And I'm on Verizon. What? I'll give you December 1 7. Get up. So stand by me. Sure.
All right. It just went through or says it went through as we stopped. All of a sudden I got a text coming through, but there's no. There's like no signal. But I think it was just barely enough to get out. So let me see if he comes up or not or responds. And let me give you his number in the meantime. You ready to copy? Go ahead. 562-713-0035. All right, is there any way to send coordinates? I don't know. But the thing is there's, you know, there's different roads up here that we hit. A couple of locked gates. I got a feeling that they were not meant to be passed through and haven't been for a while. So I'm not sure how easy it'll be to see which way to go. All right. All right. We did come through. Through the town of. What the heck was it? Silverado? Yeah, and something about something. Canyon Road. Oh, boy. How much? Nobody lost. I think we won. I don't know what the hell we did. Speaker A: That.
Speaker B: That trade show. I'm heading to the office. How did things go yesterday, guys? They took us off length after they started doing tests or something like that. Did it work out?
Speaker A: Yes. Santiago sounds fantastic. They were up there a while. They were doing. They were doing a whole bunch of stuff. New antenna for the link, things like that. So I do believe it's all done. Don't think they're going back up there today.
Speaker B: I'm not sure.
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm not sure.
Speaker B: Who dumped you?
Speaker A: I thought maybe you had done it. No, no.
Speaker B: Matter of fact, I said keep us on link. I think Tom might have. But no, I. I didn't do it. And I noticed. Bill, when I got home last night from the hospital, I checked the dashboard and things were really quiet. I checked the dashboard. You guys are disconnected. So I connected everything back up. But yeah, I know what it's like. You know, we go to our remote sites too. It's like you got all these little projects you want to get done. You're up there, you may as well do everything. So it ends up being a long day.
Speaker A: Yeah, there you go. I'm just updating the supermods and adding the other supermon links to each supermon page. Even though they don't have any port forwarded. Ports forwarded on Santiago or on Oak Hill. I still added them in there because eventually I guess I'll get some ports opened up.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's the nice thing about those RTCMs. You don't have to mess with port forwarding. We got one of our sites, Highland Peak is on a Verizon WI fi hotspot. And the other sites we have, you know, microwave connections too. So we can open ports to do what we need to do, but if that one we can't. But it still allows us. The RTCM still tunnels through. However, whatever magic they do lets us do what we need to. That's kind of convenient. Problem with those doggone RTCMs, every now and again they lose their mind. You've got to do a hard start. And I learned that the hard way going up and down, you know, 9,000 foot frickin rock to release an RTCM. So what I end up doing is I put a dry contact on the. One of our linkcom controllers and I can. I can send a command over DTMF and interrupt power to the rtcm, bring it back Up.
Speaker A: Okay. There's a lot of foreign language there. For me. One question is, what is an rtcn?
Speaker B: Oh, sorry, stands for Radio Thin Client module. Basically a little box that's. It runs Linux and it basically, it's a complete interface to a repeater. Or you can make it a controller or you can just make it a dumb node, which is what I do. And it connects to, in this case, our Vulture server. And you can connect, you can configure all kinds of stuff like courtesy beats and tones, which we don't like run through regular controllers. But it's basically a. It's like an alpha node, but it has a voting capability too. So you can vote various receivers, you know, go for the strongest signal if you have a voting system and a bunch of other different things like that. But it's kind of. It's a really easy plug and play type device. Interfaces either to a repeater or to a controller. Set all the audio levels and everything. And you can do audio shaping and gain adjustments and all kinds of remote management. It's kind of neat. That's what we have on all our mountaintops. We don't have any Linux computers on the mountaintops. Or Raspberry PIs are all. They're all rtcm.
Speaker A: Okay, so I just learned about minicom, little Minicom Dashboard. So is that what you're using to control the rtc? Rc, rct, whatever it is, using the minicom. I know Jeff, Jeff introduced that to me on the altar side. We were humping, trying to, you know,
Speaker B: find out what that was.
Speaker A: But I didn't know that the key word was minicom. We kept looking up some other stuff and couldn't find it. So that, is that. Is that where you get the minicom? Oops. Go ahead.
Speaker B: No, I've never heard of minicom. So the configuration and assignments of the RTCM are all done in the All Star server on the server side and that's where the config files are. And when you set up dm, system pre empsys, what you name it, you know, how they route and stuff like that. And then if you want to actually get into the RTCM itself, like DHCP or you know, or cor, you know, COR priority and you know, all the other things you would set for interface, you have to SSH into it. So it's more of a command line thing. There's not really a nice sexy GUI port.
Speaker A: Okay, my brain. It sounds similar to what Jeff was doing. He had to plug in a second, A second USB to C Serial
Speaker B: over
Speaker A: and above the sound card, USB to and that, that, that plugged into the serial on the repeater controller. And that's how he was able to access what you're describing, but I guess directly into the repeater controller.
Speaker B: Yeah, that's two different things. So I do the same thing. I use a different rule of, different method those guys use, who just finds tons of ways to do it. So the RTCM is an ip. I got a SSH into it. There's no serial interface. Well, there is if you go to the site, but that's irrelevant. So I SSH into it. You know, I give the static ip it can do all the happy stuff there. If, when I want to talk to the repeater controllers, I got a little box I got on Amazon that's an ethernet to RS232 interface. And I, you know, we open up a port, assign a port number to it, and then I telenet into that. And that allows me to actually talk the link on controller and do the programming of the controller. Kind of like, Kind of like what, what Jeff's doing with, with his link com controller.
Speaker A: Okay, all right. I do believe that's what Jeff was doing up on Vaca before that all got changed around. It sounded like maybe he found a new way, new way to do it on his end. Okay, well, very good. See, who says you can't teach an old, an old dilapidated dog new tricks?
Speaker B: There you go. Well, you know, we, you know, we didn't used to use our TCMS or All Star at all until about, well, time flies, maybe five, six years ago. We're all 420. And I think I told you we still have all our 420 radios on mountaintops and I have them as backups in case we lose Internet, which happens every now and again, right? Or something, something stupid happens. Right? Right now we're having a lot of packet lawsuits between two of our mountain tops. So I flip, I flipped down the 420 links between those two rocks until we got there in the microwave dish. So it's always good to have those backups. But yeah, you know, Tom and I were. When I overheard the conversation you, I think you and Tom were having, or maybe Tom and Jeff were having about programming the controllers, I, I kind of chimed in and said, hey, if you guys don't have a solution, I've got a recommendation for you. But it turns out already identified one. But these little boxes, I got them on Amazon for like 15 bucks. They're cheap. Just. They got a wall war to them and an RJ45 on one end and a DB9 on the other. And you gotta log into a webpage gui that they, you know, that they have built into it to do the initial configuration. And then it's just set and for.
Speaker A: Wow. Okay. All right. I probably should let the system cool, but it's always an absolute pleasure talking to you. Did you say you're already on the way? You on on your way to the airport? Are you still at the house?
Speaker B: No, when I went through my call sign out that I had just dropped the war department off the airport. So she's got a flight out to Long Beach. Comes back Saturday evening, I think so. Matter of fact, just gotta check from her. She's at the gate. That's quick.
Speaker A: Wow.
Speaker B: No, actually, I'm just getting off the highway here in about a half mile from the office, so your timing is good. I gotta. I gotta head back to the airport area at 3 o'. Clock. That's what corporate office is. I got a meeting that's gonna go, I'm sure way too freaking long, so. Could be a long day.
Speaker A: All right, well, you enjoy your day. And. Yeah, it feels good having Santiago on All Star. My 10 years of experience with Carla at Santiago, Wink. Just never really sounded quite right. But yeah, that sounds pretty good. Now they. I think they still have to fix a link up on 30, maybe 25, but it's coming around. Okay, Ralph, take care and enjoy the
Speaker B: rest of your day.
Speaker A: I'll be listening in 6. Canning Genoa to Columbia. Okay, Ken.
Speaker B: Yeah, thanks for the shout. Yeah, and I agree. You know that other whoever that was that keyed up before you? There was so much link half noise and popping and stuff because you can make out who it was. But it's good to have as much stuff on All Star as possible. And of course, always keep the 420 stuff or the RF stuff up in case the balloon goes up. Right. All right, man. Just getting off the Highway 73 and I'll chat with you later. Thanks for the call. That's what BRB means, huh? We figured it was coffee. I read all your stuff there to Lori. Oh.
Well, it wasn't at 4 and then I started hearing those guys back east real good and I heard a couple of tune ups. Then finally John came in there about what, 5, 45 or something like that, and he was a little bit light. And then within 15 or 20 minutes, Terry came in there and John was blasting. So it took it a while to come around the mountain this morning.
All right, where is the the road crew? There. N6 MVT. WP6JKV mobile. You rise and shiny up their unit over system 32 lake. So I'll take that as a no. Switch it back to local.
Speaker A: You hear about the ICE protesters down on Skyway across from the rec hall? I guess they occupied two corners down here for the coming.
Speaker B: There's only two kinds of motorcycle riders. The ones that's been down and the ones that are going down.
Speaker A: Yeah. So I jumped in the truck with the trailer and decided to go pick up them towers, but they were gone by the time I got down there. They're. They're gonna have another thing coming when they come up here trying to protest ice. If ICE ever makes it here. I'm looking for the phone number right now. We'll get everybody we know together. But down there with American flags and, and mega hats, there'll be more us. And then we'll just sit. Simply surround them. So
Speaker C: you get the idea. Yep. That's how I see it.
Speaker A: No baseball bat. Yeah. You could hurt somebody with a baseball bat. We want to be. We want to be good Republican, law abiding. Law abiding American citizens. Citizens. We just want to outnumber them so they can see you're not going to do any shenanigans here.
Speaker C: We invite ice. So my neighbor went
Speaker A: by yesterday. He's the one that told me about it. And he flipped them off through the window. Didn't, didn't get any feedback from them though. He figured they were down there for the incoming or the influx of people coming home from work.
Speaker C: So anyway, that was that. Well, I. I was pretty good
Speaker A: friends with Hagen. Bart, but he's not here. They're just down the street from me. Maybe I'll run down there today. Good idea.
Speaker C: Cool. The cool part is they're wearing red shirts all the time.
D.
Yeah, we're probably going to lose a couple of taco stands. Well, the. Actually, actually, what they, what they do before ICE comes is they blanket an area, Chico, you know, Orville, blah, blah, blah. And, and they run, they run all the illegal names that they, that they can get a warrant on them. ICE doesn't arrest people unless they make a scene, break the law right in front of them. Basically, they have already have a sign from a judge warrant to pick somebody up. So if they get enough people in this area, they'll be here. They're getting ready to hammer California. And you know why old Newscomb thinks he's gonna get away with some kind of voter fraud?
That's just garbage. He would never win an election, you know, I mean, unless you got all the illegals, which I don't know how they're going to be able to vote to mass up. It'd probably be a decent little run there. But hey, 70% of the of America voted to get rid of them. So. All immigrants in one big ball. So I'm pretty sure he'll landslide Vancel landslide presidency.
Speaker A: I watched a little clip yesterday on Little Trump, and Trump was saying, it's a cartoon. Trump was saying, hey, 98% of Somalians in Minnesota are collecting welfare EBT and that so why in the hell they don't have jobs? Why the hell are there kids in daycare? And why are there so many daycare centers? It's an excellent point. I remember hearing 86%. But that was like a month ago that Trump said 98%.
Speaker B: Well, I don't know If Trump said 98%,

Speaker A: And
Speaker B: packaged scrambled eggs. Good morning. I was up pretty late last night. I. I don't know what time they left the mountain, but it sounded like it was, I don't know, maybe 8 o' clock or so their time.
Speaker A: That's when they attempted to. That was before Tom got a little disoriented and encountered some locked gates. And I ended up having to call Fred for him. And Fred got on the air and gave him some guidance and I shut this thing off and hit the sack at 11pm My time.
Speaker B: Okay, that's about the same time I shut my stuff off or turn the volume down anyways. Except it was 11:00pm my time. Well, it sure sounds good. So I guess they have to check out the link antennas or link equipment maybe on 30. I think that's where 31 goes to 30. Yep.
Speaker A: Yeah, the path between 30 and the Northland here is fine, but it hiccups between 30 and 31. So the problem at 31 was resolved and yeah, it's obviously at 30.
Speaker B: Well, hopefully when they get that all that stuff settled in, we'll hear a little more traffic from Southern California. Good traffic that is. I know that area could be a little iffy some people, but I've got a couple of friends down there. I'm gonna re invite them to the system.
Speaker A: I think they may be interested now
Speaker B: that the link quality is much better.
Speaker A: Yeah, a lady buddy that might be interested too. Janet, manager of the HRO down there in Anaheim. I think I'll ping her and let her know that it's one working way more better. All right, I'm at work, so time to get back with it. So have a good one and

The gears. Monthly informal breakfast is held on the second Saturday of the month at 9am at the Farmer's Skillet, located at 690 Rio Lindo Avenue, Chico. All are welcome to attend. W6R HC Repeater Check 1.
Hi. I think it's gonna sprinkle. Doesn't say anything about rain, but the weather jesters, they don't know. I'm starting to see a little bit of green come into the cloudy area, so maybe we will get some rain, and otherwise it doesn't show rain till next Tuesday.
Speaker A: Thinking I'm taking that case back to Arbor freight even though 20 bucks was cheap enough for it I can't get I can't get all the fan tick stuff in there I can get the soldering gun in one fan tick piece and that's
Speaker B: it.
Speaker A: Oh yeah and one fan tick of the screwdriver kits and maybe the digital dual plane level and I can get that piece in there too but I hate to leave one piece out Next time I'm down at Harbor Freight I'm going to check out the next bigger size which almost makes it kind of weird to carry that big thing around but I'd like to see all that stuff in a case so I may
Speaker B: do that. And it keeps
Speaker A: it safe neat and clean and looking brand new yeah well I'll investigate a little bit longer all right I'm going to turn on the TV see if I can see this Starlink mini online somewhere maybe my
Speaker B: phone. Did you stop and get some bologna from Blake?
Speaker A: Check.
D.
Speaker A: Kilo November 6th. My golf kilo is mobile system 36.
Speaker B: Dry and cold in paradise, I'll bet.
Speaker A: No idea. Yeah, dry, dry for sure. But I got this little fog warning and there's definitely some fog here. I'm gonna go grab me some tea and then I'll head up that way. So if maybe if there is any, it'll be gone by then. Well, curious band was for you because for me I was up early about 4:45 and working the 40 meter band. first it seemed like it was just long getting stuff into, you know, Asia again and then nothing really up close. I looked at PSK reporter and I was getting some stuff around California and stuff. So I started seeing a few California stations but they were really weak like Paso Robles negative 17 or something like that. I mean but I'm getting them so I mean maybe I did come back and get some west coast stuff after I quit.
Speaker B: Well, I've been working with N6 knee because the Humboldt county station is going to try again and he thought they were all set when he first started talking to me about it and one but he wanted my. Some of my All Star components that one of the reasons why the All Star wouldn't work out is I don't control that router and some change changes happen with it. It seems to be reset every so often and it loses my connection so to the, to the All Star setup. So. Anyway since you know it's not the most important thing in the world for me and the Humboldt county station won't go on unless they have All Star. So I said sure they can, they can pay what I paid and take it away. And I still don't know if they need the PI that came with it. It'd be kind of cool to keep the pie because I can use that for jsa. But I do have more than one so I'm not too worried about that. So. And then he, he talked to the guy because he thought he has a radio, the special radio, a linko that has a nine pin connector on the back and they don't use it for RSP32 they use which is what I originally thought they. What they use it for is for. They use it for audio in and out, push to talk. You know it's all non digital stuff. Anyway, he doesn't have one. He doesn't have that radio so. Oh well.
Speaker A: Well, I guess I don't understand because I never thought you got any of it running. You certainly never wanted to contact me via All Star and test out stuff or anything. I mean that would have been a good use case for it, but I don't recall you ever getting it going, so why would they want any of your stuff?
Speaker B: Well, you're forgetting it did work to you. It worked to you because it didn't need that special thing that they used. Or was that something else? Anyway, it doesn't matter. I worked on All Star with Ken a lot and we thought we had it going pretty well and then the connection I had that had to have a special setting in the router not setting went away. We were back to square one with no Internet for the. The it uses a thing called a rim light and it uses the pot and and the pie had to have that special setting to make All Star work and it went away just out of the blue. So I, I, you know, and it wasn't the most important thing to me at all. So I mean he just thinks it's awesome. But yeah, I don't, I don't think any digital phone is that awesome. Anyway, another topic, Quartzite is going full blown and I'm thinking SLN is there. I'm thinking about turning my, My Fusion on and do you ever listen to Fusion or anything? Because he could call us on Fusion someplace.
Speaker A: Oh yeah, well he was asking you know about. Yeah, I'm driving and dang traffic's nuts. Okay out of that situation anyway I shouldn't even be in this stupid lane. Usually get over to the fast lane so I've got to avoid. I can avoid the merge on that didn't happen this time. Anyway, the ISLN did send me an email about it and I told him to get onto the paradise stuff but he said it wasn't working. I think he was trying to echo link all that stuff's working from Paradise. I made sure of it. But yeah, there was some downtime in there so quite possible that he was trying it when it was down. So, so that might have happened but it's all working. So he could get ahold of through wires X that way or echo link that way. The Paradise Magalia repeater which I'm a member of. He could also get in touch with the US with that one state of Jefferson up there and we could probably get on that at some point in time. I could re put in my program and have wires X on my laptop but I haven't done that and probably don't want to be honest because that's why I use the Paradise McKellion repeater. So that's what I prefer. I wish you could get into there from your place. But I don't think you have a capable wire ZEX transceiver that'll put out more than five watts. Right.
Speaker B: When I use wires X. I have well, currently working the ESU 5 doctor and that's for Fusion 2. And you're right, I. I'm just right on the edge of getting two different wires X. One, of course, the 8900 and the other one.
Speaker A: Yeah, well the 8900 doesn't do any of them. Right. It doesn't do any of those two modes. But anyway, so that would work fine for I think that one reading one that you use. That's the State of Jefferson fusion site. Yeah. So. But unfortunately I don't think you could reach the Paradise Magellan repeaters, either one of them. That's just a thought. I wish you could though with that. That'd be awesome. But I don't think you can. Nevertheless, it'd be fun. You'd have to use. You know, the other option is I could turn on my hotspot again. My jumbo hotspot. I don't know that you've got a hotspot. That'd be cool if you did.
Speaker B: Well, I thought that the 8900 was one of the oldest radios that does to Wiretech did it way before. I see they're saying the 7900 does it. The analog wires X mode.
Speaker A: Are we talking about that four band one that you have my understanding that doesn't do any wire stacks, but it did. There was some units that came out a long time ago that did the first wires protocol like they call it like wires two or something like that. But all that changed and none of those machines work anymore. All wires X. Now that's wires 10 instead of wires 2 or something like that. Like one of my transceivers a little. What is that little 6VX6R, whatever that's called. It has. It had wires, but all that stuff doesn't work on it now and it hasn't for a long time. And they still sell it, by the way, because it's a lot of the tactical, you know, prepper type people like that transceiver, like the tech prepper. That's one of his favorites.
Speaker B: No, I, I'm. I'm looking at USA official and they're saying it does wires that.
Speaker A: Okay, well then I guess you should be getting on it and, and that's 50 watts and you should be able to get out there, right?
Speaker B: Yeah, I, I've never used it Though I don't have the faintest idea how to use it.
Speaker A: Yeah, I don't think it does it at all. It might have done the old one, like I said.
Speaker B: Well, they keep mentioning a HRI 200. What is that? Have you ever heard of that? Yep, sure have.
Speaker A: I had one. See, I think I paid about 100 bucks to purchase brand new in a box and had it for a year or two. Nobody cared about Wires X, couldn't find an appropriate transceiver to use it with. Nobody wanted to sell me one for a reasonable price. So I ended up selling the whole. The whole wire, the HRI 200 for 50 bucks at 1 of the ham fests. I think the Loomis one anyway, so. Lost half my money. But anyway, yeah, that's what you use. And you have to dedicate your whole transceiver to be a wires x station that way. See, your FD5DR.
Speaker B: Can be.
Speaker A: Can do the same thing, except you can't host a room. So say you want your own room, you need the HRI 200 box. If you don't want your own room, you just want to be able to use wires X. You can, you can use the PDN mode of your ST5DR. Through software on one of your computers. Right. And it'll do the same darn thing.
Speaker B: Well, it actually sounds like, since it's analog, it sounds like it's doing. It's very similar to All Star, except all. All Star is hard to program. I don't know if wires XHRI 200 is hard to program because it. Well, All Star runs a huge, absolutely mind boggling, huge script. And that's what Ken's been working with remotely is rewriting scripts for all the different repeaters.
Speaker A: Yeah, but you know, like I've had my own All Star node and I've had it on many times and I've reprogrammed it, redone all that stuff a couple of times and you know, I've never found where it was all that great. I mean, yeah, it can be private and I can get on. And I can get on the Carla system, let's say, or whatever from wherever I am up my nose. Okay, fine. Get into Las Vegas Association. I can go talk on Australia and all this kind of stuff, you know, any place you want and have a little fun with that. But I'd like to have more fun with just HF and other things too. So like you said, it's not all that for me. And anymore they made it real simple. I think with almond 3, like their pieces. You know, I wouldn't waste my time on anything else except that now instead of going with Ham Voight, I wish the old school way of doing it. Now they've got Oman 3, so it's a lot better. You can look at Ham radio crusader, great YouTube channel for anything. All Star. He's the best. Him. There might be a cam4ack maybe on some things. Well, actually, I don't think he does All Star. I can't remember anyway, but Henrietta Crusader, Crusader, that guy, that YouTube channel, he's only got like 10,000 subscribers, so he's not huge, but he's big in All Star and anything All Star related. That guy.
Speaker B: Yeah, it's a. You know, anytime you're using digital, that doesn't include RF as a. In other words, if it's not a way to get to an important RF system like they. The way they use it for Carla, then I'm not that interested at all in it. I mean, it's just like RF is where it's at for me. Not. Not digital, VoIP, blah, blah, blah. I use a cell phone cell phone for that. By the way, I have a cell cell phone app that's supposed to used to connect to some of the All Star networks and now it doesn't do nothing. So I know something changed.
W e6a x m repeater.
Speaker A: Different if you're at home and you can just mess with it for a day or something like that in the comfort of your home. A little simpler than messing around with stuff like that, but. Yeah, I don't recall you ever talking on All Star, so maybe you did with Ken. I don't know. I don't recall it. But nevertheless sounds like you're going to be getting out of it. So whenever you did have.
Speaker B: Yeah, by the way, something took out every. Almost everything until the very last little part of your conversation. Mainly just that you don't recall me talking using All Star. Yeah, it's not important to me except for the fact that Carla uses it. Other than that, it doesn't make any difference to me and Carla is less important to me than it was before. So other than 36 local. 36 local is about the only Carla thing I really like doing.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, I was checking myself. It doesn't seem like interfering with now. Anyway, I hated the fact that now what I said at the end was taken out of context because the context, you know, had to do with me agreeing with you. I didn't like. I don't like a lot of the facets of say, a digital thing that's all Internet based. And I went ahead and talked about how sometimes you see them at repeaters and you can't get the repeaters. I say it's one thing if you're at home and you need to reconfigure something on All Stars, something like that, and comfort your own home versus having to travel to some repeater somewhere and all that kind of stuff, you know. So that's kind of what I was saying. Yeah.
Speaker B: And I. And you know, I mean, there's little special places where it's important, like the fact that everybody goes. Whole ton of people go to court site. Well, OSG is going to court site. Now he'll get on a test. John is in court site. But is he at the court site in the courtside area? Because where he was was in a trailer park in that court site area, which was making it very hard for him to do an ehs. I don't know why he did that other than the fact that he can get power there. But yeah, I mean, OFG and I don't know how many other guys on the 192net are going to court site. So that'll be happening. And yeah, I mean it's just little bits and pieces.
Speaker A: Okay, well, KM6MGK. I don't really have much comment on court site since I don't know it much, but I think that's a fairly spread out area. I had sent an email to John regarding Mishtastic and thought myself that those guys that are going to court site would be a great use case for it, that I'm sure that many of the folks out there will be using that to communicate, especially private messages and maybe an event that might be taking place, but they want to get everyone, you know, at the same time. I could just hit a button and everyone that has a mesh node will get it. You know, I think that's a good use case for it. And so I mentioned all that to him and he didn't sound too interested in it. And yeah, you mentioned about having some issues with where it could place antennas and things like that. So I don't know. Yeah, Winter field day is this weekend, so we're going to go out and try different antennas and stuff like that. Weather permitting. Hopefully we have a better season than we did last year.
Speaker B: Well, I don't know how much you know about quartzite, but it is like a. Kind of like one of these bigger swap meets on steroids. That's the way I would describe it.
Speaker A: Yeah. No, as of a couple years ago, he said, I want to go to courtside. I'm like, what's that? Yeah, I had to look it up. So, yeah, I know absolutely nothing about it. I have a relative who has a trailer in Arizona. I'd have to look at where that is. It's like a. Shouldn't say it's a train. It's like it's a mobile home or whatever you want to call it. Maybe a single wide. Anyway, I have pictures of it. I've never been there. I don't even know what city it's in, so. But it looks like desert to me. It all looks the same, but they love it because they're from Idaho. You know, they don't want to be in Idaho this time of year, so they go down there. Don't know much about it, but I've seen videos and I've enjoyed several videos of YouTubers who are doing things in quartzite. And yeah, it looks a lot spread out to me.
Speaker B: Well, you know, the primary use of quartzite was by the Los Angeles and Las Vegas people because every square foot of acreage in those two areas is called for and controlled by somebody. So they could go to court site and put up any antenna they wanted to, except that there's no trees. So they'd have to do it without trees. But so they all had masks now, you know, they've got all these push up fiberglass masks and talk about a mask on steroids. Gee, whip is 50, 60, 75ft with fiberglass. That's pretty incredible. But you know, SLN doesn't have any of that now. Osg, he does potas all the time and he's right on it. And that's why I was hoping SLN would get together with somebody who really does that sort of operation. Because that SLN's biggest problem is getting on the air with a quick, easy antenna. He just, he's really green with antennas. So anyway, one step, by the time, little by little, things are improving. What can I say? By the way, I don't know if you saw that one. I think it was Ham Radio 2 put out a thing about how he hated the YAESU handheld tuner for HF that was $300 and it just was terrible. And he said, and that's I think the one that SLN has. So that's another reason SLN is having trouble.
Speaker A: Yeah, no, negative. Yeah, that's not the one he has, but he has one like that, lol. And by the way, you know, you may have seen it elsewhere, but I know I sent you a link to that video. It's probably the best video that. What's his name? Michael, I can't remember his last name. Starts with a D K 8M R D. Probably one of the best YouTube video series. He did two videos like that too, down in that little thing. The second one was probably the best video I've seen from him in a long time because he was passionate and that's why I sent it to you and how big of a piece of junk that thing is. And yeah, I'm glad I haven't. At first I liked the idea of it and I wanted to buy one and then of course I wait a little while and after the first month of it being out, I go, yeah, this is not for me.
Speaker B: I can see already.
Speaker A: And I would have wanted to buy all those parts and pieces. And yeah, all that thing does is Maybe they'll tune 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 on some stuff, but it's basically worthless for the person who's trying to use a random wire or you know, something like that. So anyway, now the one that John SLN has is the FT891. You know, kind of looks just like your 7100, not the control head part, but you know, that size of a mobile unit. So like the 857D or whatever. The 891 looks like that 7100, but it has a faceplate on it, you know, that looks like a normal radio that comes off, not like that goofy 7100 looking desk mount kind of thing. So that's what he has. And then he has the tuner that they recommend for that from yaesu, which again is a waste of money because it'll only do like say three to one or so, maybe four to one if you're lucky. And, but whatever. I, you know, I, I tried to convince him a long time before on several units and I also offered to meet him, meet him in Red Bluff at, you know, William B. Ide, which is a place where, you know, you can do poda and you know, ike we can do something over things. You can look at this radio. I was going to bring a couple radios before he even bought one and he ended up getting like talked to by a salesman I think. But yeah, he should have gone with like a matte tuner or something like that. That would do 10 to 1, you know, something better than what he ended up with, which is the YAESU one.
Speaker B: You know, he's so worried, oh, I buy something and it breaks like I'm not gonna bite used. Because if it's not new, if it's new, it's not gonna break use, it's gonna break. I'm going, oh my God. Okay. But the I, I've had this intellituner and I've looked inside of it. I know what they're doing in there. They have a whole ton of toroids and relays, you know, that is a great it. And everybody's well, gee, that's a lot of stuff to just tune a radio. Well, it does the job. The intellituner was expensive for an MFJ for mighty fine junk, you know, that's expensive, 300 bucks. But then all of a sudden China came out with the ATU 10 I think they called it. And then now they've got the ATU 100 and then they've got another one that's even better. And they're tiny little things with, have backup batteries in them like my, my HDMI monitor I love so much. I also look at tv, digital TV and everything and analog rf, you know, from cameras and just, you know, everything from a little battery powered HDMI monitor. So this stuff is out there. You just got to be open minded. But no, you got that three, three to one tuner from yaesu,
Speaker A: right? And I forget the model Is like maybe like FC80 or something like that, FC50 or whatever. But it's the YAESU branded tuner. But it's still about the same size as the radio, you know, thereabouts. It's not that little thing that you clip on the back of. I mean the other one, I mean, you know, SLN was not going to spend $2,000 on a transceiver, you know, that's why K8MRD is complaining because first off, you spend $1500 on the FT1S X which that model is what's kind of like the 705, you know that you buy that then you got to add all the other components to it, right. So you gotta, you know, it comes with a battery, but you gotta add other things to it. So you end up spending a couple thousand dollars, especially if you want the Optima amp, which is another 800 bucks. And this is all ridiculous, you know, and for the things to work like that. So that's. Yaesus made their mistake, you know, I think at least a part of it, the modularity is interesting, but. Yeah, so no, but the unit, the transceiver that he bought was somewhere around 600 bucks, you know, maybe 6, 649, you know, and then you buy the tuner for another 300 bucks or whatever. So he still spent a grand or more and then he bought just that dipole antenna, whatever. But you know, he could have bought the 710, which I have two of them, you know, and I had, I landed one at my house for under 800 bucks and have everything all in one tuner and everything, you know, but whatever. And he knows it because I think his, maybe it's his son or whatever in Oklahoma has one. And I told them how good they are and you know, I mean they're kind of like your ICOM 7300. I mean that's the way they are. So anyway. But here, near there, it's not worth it. I don't, you know, I'm just glad to hear. Get him on the air. And that was pretty cool because he hadn't been so I think all of us are happy about that. Right. I'd like to see him back on and keep playing because891 is still a very, very useful tool. You know, just that I'm not concerned about even if I had a 2 to 1, which I operate all the time different antennas that are 2 to 1 and I don't care about it being a little off.
Speaker B: Yeah, the 8991, I'd have to say is here's a 7100 without a few things, like the beautiful LCD screen that you hate so much. And the. It doesn't have a tuner at all, I don't think. Or maybe if it has one, it's terrible. I don't think it has one. And, but, but, you know, all we can say with John is if you're gonna get all pushy and, and think, you know, you're gonna make it push him into doing anything, it ain't gonna happen. You know, you gotta be patient with him. He's very, very slow to change.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, you just brought up the 7100 screen. And I've played with one one time, no, maybe twice, because Jeremy has one. And the screen does not bother me. I like the screen. I like it for its purpose. I do not like it if I was mounting it in a vehicle, but other people do. So I think it's a use case, you know, but the screen doesn't bother me. And your 7100 doesn't have a tuner in it either. Right. What it does have is a sound card. And that's really important to you. And the 891 does not have a sound card or tuner. So that's why you'd have to buy that separate. So what does Jeremy buy? And he has a good one. He bought the LBG tuner for the ICOM71 and now he's got basically the cat's meow in that portable unit. He's not climbing any mountains with it. But, you know, you wouldn't climb any mountains with that unit anyway, so. So he doesn't care about the control head. It would pack nicer if it didn't have that weird kind of control head. That's all. But very good, capable unit. That's why I was hoping, you know, since you're having troubles with JS8, you know, and you might be able to take that unit inside and get it operating on it so we could prove out that your computer is fine.
Speaker B: Well, what that would prove is that the radios. That it's not the 7300 that's causing the problem. I. I looked on, I looked at the Internet for other people with the same problem and I found them. So I'm convinced it's win 11.
Speaker A: Yeah. But, yeah, it could be a software update or something. But that's why I was hoping, you know, 7100, if you could get it going with your computer, then you'd say okay, well now I know it's a setting in the radio or something like that, but I know nothing's really changed. Just setting wise probably some sort of software update like you said, came in to Windows 11 and kind of corrupted something. I don't know, unfortunate but that happens.
Speaker B: Yeah. Cuz it's the audio drivers and you know the chance of the possibility of the 7,300 audio drivers failing is pretty, pretty. I mean why, why was it Now I did do the firmware update but you know, some people would say you're adding to the problem because you're adding another variable. Well that's true, that's the way it goes. I just get nothing from the computer audio in or out and, and you know I did have a backup backup reason to think that it was the, the computer drivers and, and the computer win 11. What they were saying was computers that were win 10 all of a sudden they get switched by Windows to win 11 and it's a complete update, big gold deal, you know, but it looks just like a regular update. And my, this, this computer that I have over here does do updates online. You know, it's hooked up online all the time. So yeah, they said they had a problem. They were guessing at the reasons. I don't know. I need to look again and see if some more people have come up with answers or maybe I rewrote the drivers, I don't know.
Speaker A: Yeah, I mean 6 MGK. The only ideas I've got, I guess we've already gone through the gamut but like my buddy up here, Jay, who is a ICOM7300 just lover and we used it for the last photo activation I did. We were using his ICOM 7300 out in the field and we popped it up on his dash and we were running FT8 and stuff. I mean he runs it every day just about and so he knows exactly how it's supposed to go and all the different settings and things like that. Just because he's operated so many. He has a 7610, he has a 7300, he has a 705. You know, he's, he's an icon guy anyway, nevertheless, taking a guy like that. So like if you went to say winter field day somewhere or someone who's doing that, you take your 7300 with you, you know, and you can find someone else who's got a Windows 11 machine running it, running theirs now you can swap your radio out for it,
Speaker B: you know,
Speaker A: and see if, you know, he can make it run on FT8 or.
Speaker A: W
Speaker B: e6a x n repeater.
Speaker A: Js 8, whatever.
Speaker B: Then, then obviously then you need, you know, your computer should be able to do it too, right?
Speaker A: Yeah, I, I, I, I can see where you're going. You know, eliminate various blocks. And yeah, I'm all for that. I just got to the point, See, I didn't have that many different possibilities of, for eliminating blocks other than programming and setting up a complete system with a PI. Other than that, I, you know, I don't have any other laptops that, or setting up Linux on a laptop. Other than those two possibilities, I don't have, I don't have another laptop I can do that with. So anyway, yeah, that's why I went with the PI that in the aesthetics that run fda and it works. And I'm really close to making that, putting that system on, but trying to get it to do JSA little bit hard, harder than I thought it would be because the FT8 won't work by itself. In other words, if you go to, go to the PI 4D and try to run FT8, which is in there and operating, everything's wrong. So, but then you turn on S bitx all of a sudden everything is right. So S bitix is setting using settings that for some reason FT8 doesn't use by itself. Well, JS8 has the same kind of a problem. In fact, there's some kind of interaction between JS8 and FT8. I read from, I read from Ashar, the guy that designed the aesthetics, and he says you can go to a certain manual FT8 mode and it will work. It will go to that frequency where js8 is and it will decode it and encode it. It'll, you can, you can talk with it. You just don't have all the other options like the relay and all that other stuff that FDA has.
Speaker B: Okay, well, I just got, I've been arrived in the parking lot here for a few minutes, talking to you there, and it's a good chat, but I've got to go. I've got someone texting me, the guy I work for wanting to know the answer to a question. So I got to get back to him and I could chat with you on the later, I have to say, 73 for now. Speaker A: M7t ending.
Speaker B: I'll bet you're on the way to the airport.
Speaker A: I think I got a quick key. Try again.
Speaker B: And I've got a button here that's not reliable. I said I bet you're on your way to the airport. I am, I am, I am, I am.
Speaker A: To the corporate office. Yeah, trying to make it through traffic here. Looks like it's not going to be too bad. Middle of the afternoon, but leaving there, going back home. Six o' clock tonight or whatever it's going to be. It's going to be a mess, but whatever. I know what to expect. How's your day down there?
Speaker B: Very good. Just didn't do a whole lot today, playing around with the super mons. Learning a whole bunch and kind of preparing them for these other sites. Man, we had a hell of a rainstorm early this morning. So everything's nice and clean and wet outside. The temperature's not real high, but the humidity is. Yeah, it's all good. All good. I love it.
Speaker C: Yeah, we could.
Speaker A: We could sure use some of that
Speaker C: wet stuff this way.
Speaker A: It's just really, really dry this year so far. So are Tom and the guys going to. Are they just trying to reconstitute what was in the past other than Santiago? Are they gonna try to put All Star on more previously RF only sites?
Speaker B: There was a few dropouts. Santiago didn't have All Star before and the. The link, the link to 30 and maybe even from 30 to 29, I think it is. Was diminished. So if I'm not mistaken, they replaced a bunch of stuff for the link, the RF link side of things, including antennas and. And then. Yeah, and then install the fresh All Star node, fresh PI and. And all that. All that stuff needed for of those.
Speaker A: Okay, good deal. Good deal. Yeah, I know Santiago was previously RF only, so good to have that on also. I guess my question was, are they going to try to converge other legacy RFO and lane links into All Star or just kind of get things back to the word the way they were before?
Speaker B: They're always going to keep the rf, you know, like a backup. No, I think they're just adding some All Star to the locations that need it. Not all of the sites need it. A lot of the sites have fantastic RF visibility for lack of better words to their partner site. So. Yeah, I think I know. Topaz, Bernie. We've already got the SD card burned for Bernie. No punt intended. And then Topaz up there on the Nevada side, I think I know he's going to get an All Star So then there's one or two more.
Speaker A: Yeah, I know that they're trying to, you know, get away from that paved pause interference from the Army Air Force too.
Speaker C: So I know that's part of it.
Speaker B: Yeah, exactly. That causes havoc on those links.
Speaker A: Yeah, we got a couple of our mountain tops that get hammered with something called saddle
Speaker B: and.
Speaker A: But they're on the input of the talkback frequency. So they're not on the links are in the 440 area causing us a problem. A couple of our mountaintops not as
Speaker C: bad as it used to be.
Speaker A: But the good news is I think the end of next calendar year the military is going to get off that band completely and go to higher bands which is going to cause hams problems on the upper frequency of like 900, 800, 1.2 gigs. But it'll get off our 400 channel.
Speaker B: Yeah, that probably. That's probably been due for a long time. And then I. I think there was a couple of satellites that went up. You probably know better than I do. Maybe even secretively the satellite sent one up that'll. That'll eliminate some of that radar. Ground radar stuff.
Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker A: The saddle system is actually called Situational Air Data Link and it's the system they use on the aircraft to communicate weapons information and situational awareness and stuff like that. It operates in the 400 lower 400 band. Which person? Military primarium.
Speaker B: But they're.
Speaker A: They're moving for various reasons not.
Speaker C: Not the least of which is more
Speaker A: bandwidth or something the high. All right. That's why all the cell providers are going up in the. The 6 gig plus spectrum for, for their 5G. But anyway. Yeah, that, that move.
Speaker B: Go ahead, paul.
Speaker C: You know I would. I know this was years ago but we used to. I got. I got a hold of a hatchet television. These 1.2 GHz FM fast scan transmitter. Let me reset. We started using. It worked great. But we found here in Florida big radar to the big giant like the lower half to almost three quarters of the 1.2 hand pan. So we had. We started out low. We had to go all the way up to 1280 and maybe seeing here blip every minute. Pretty bad. We only had that one channel.
Speaker A: Yeah, we've got the same thing here. We got 1.2, 2.5 900 MHz FastCan FM on one of our mountaintops. And the mountaintop that Angel Peak is on, which is the one that has a saddle system, also has a gap roller radar, FAA radar that operates in that band and it causes. Doesn't cause us any problems because we don't operate up there at angel, just on high floidity. But yeah, very, very, very fair. It Very, very familiar with it. Matter of fact, I remember a while ago we took a camcorder up there when we were installing the site. We got back to the house and played back a video. And you hear this like every now
Speaker C: and then going through.
Speaker A: Going through the audio baseband of the video. And that was the radar sweeping.
Speaker C: Yeah, it was real bad at the low end. We had to boost it up to 1280. I forget our limit, you know, fastcan is like 5 megahertz, maybe close to minus 5. I forget. Boy, that transmitter I had, it was a five watt transmitter. Worked fantastic. Anyway, Sham sh. As you.
Speaker A: As you very well know. It's not so much the power of the transfer as the efficiency of the antenna system.
Speaker C: Right.
Speaker A: I know guys here that run 100 watts on the repeater. They run a piece of shit antenna like a diamond or a hustler or Ringo or something. We'll run 35, 40 watts on superstation Masters and just saturate the valley. So just like on audio, it's all about the speakers, right? It's all about the antennas.
Speaker C: Yeah, I had a. I think it was a 15 element, 1.2 big beam at a rotator. Other antennas too, but 28. And I think it was about 5 to 10 miles to the repeater site, which is over 100 to. And then the output was on four hundred and twenty seven something. But the input was 1.2 gig work.
Speaker A: Yeah, I hear you.
Speaker C: I hear you.
Speaker A: All right, man, I gotta. I gotta put down this mic. I'm getting in the middle of this thicker crap here on i15. Everybody's driving like an idiot. So I'll talk to you both later. Man 7 TMD lights right now.
Speaker C: All right? Yeah, I was just mentioning. It was the darn radar, though. Holy mackerel, he's powerful. We. We had a government radar outside of Melbourne on the central east coast. It was like 15, 25 miles inland, maybe 10, 15 miles out from Melbourne. Radar governance. Yeah, that rate, that big giver has been great. Later.
Speaker B: I'll talk to you guys later. The wife just walked into the room here. I'm showing her a cool video of a guy building a cabin. I'll be listening in the distance. N6P and E.
