Speaker B: Oh, just pulling up this stop sign here in Orland. Heading back to Chico from the winter field Day location. That's a battle.
Speaker A: Are any of the others camping out?
Speaker B: No, there's no. No camping really there. Yeah. Yep. And starting to get a little cooler too. But it didn't seem too bad. Wind was. It was okay. Definitely simmered down in the afternoon.
Speaker A: Well, I'm putting siding on, so I. I didn't get to do any radio stuff.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, I did do JS8 on 15 meters. I got like 10 contacts on JS8.
Speaker A: Yeah. If you notice how. How it works sometimes you can get two or three going at the time. Same time, have to respond to two or three at once.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know how you're gonna be able to do that because you might get the decodes, but you can't read them all at once. I don't know. I'd have to figure that out. Never have. Not when you just try to do cq. You know, it's all call and you know, it doesn't. Unless you put your little decoders over it, it won't decode that spot. So you only get to see something, maybe a little something. You get to see a call sign maybe. And I don't know, that's tricky.
Speaker A: Yeah, I didn't have any problem with. Is a speed reading challenge though. And you just gotta work fast, get out a reply to each one real quick. Anyway. Yeah, worked out. But then you got, you know, you should have. You should be logging it. So that's, that's one additional thing that could, that could make it harder.
Speaker B: Yeah, you have to log it. I mean, if you're gonna be doing it.
Speaker A: Yeah.
Speaker B: I mean, everyone wants their credit and stuff, right. So, yeah, you need their class and sections. You gotta put that in the right fields and you got to make sure you get that. And you also got to respond and say 73. You know, the niceties of ham radio. So, yeah, a little bit more to deal with. You know, if you're going to get 10 decodes at once,
Speaker A: you know, they
Speaker B: come across the street, then you know, how you gonna, you know, read them all at one.
Speaker A: Yeah. If you are logging them and looking for contacts at the same time, that could be a little too much. Anyway, I got this siding is like nine foot and it's a little interesting to do it, you know, because if you don't want to waste any of it, you have to start cutting angles right off the bat. And I'm terrible with angles. I thought I had the angle right and I had to redo it, but I got it.
Speaker B: Well, I'm just saying that we've been lucky we can do any of this stuff this year, because last year it was. You couldn't do nothing in the winter. It was like nothing you could do until April.
Speaker A: Yeah, there was one lady just sitting out in your yard doing stuff. Didn't have any special clothing on. It was pretty warm. So. Yeah, it's pretty unusual.
Speaker B: Yep. I hung up a mesh node up in the tree, and it was relaying all the information back down to other nodes. And so Jeremy was listening to that, and I had mine going and another person had his going. So it was interesting. You know, I was responding to some of the ham radio guys that were on the mash2. So I think we were getting a pretty good funnel in from the Sutter buttes, I'm pretty sure. But I can't say that any of mine were getting back to the Sutter buttes, But I was getting some from it, at least.
Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Well, the mesh adds to all the things you could be doing. So. Yeah, I did. I was. I did have 10 meters running, and I was just kind of tuning around, and I found this station at 28.223. And then it's TW. So it was 322339. It just went on and on with CW. I think it might have been one of those beacons, but yeah, you might hear it someday and figure out what it is.
Speaker B: Yep. I was stuck to pretty much 15 meters, so that's kind of what we did anyway. And, you know, we did TW on that mostly, but I did do a few side band contacts as well.
Speaker A: Well, did they have somebody on 10?
Speaker B: Jeremy put 10 meters on for a while. I don't know how. How much he did on it, but sure, he got. He got some. But yeah, 20 meters, 15 and 10 pretty much is where I think we were.
Speaker A: Yeah, it would be interesting to find out where that Deacon was coming from. It was all CW and it was pretty slow, so that's why I kind of thought it was a deacon. No contact, 100%. It reminded me of the ARRL code practice, but it didn't ever change speed or anything.
Speaker B: Yeah, you could probably answer some from your house still. I mean, 40 meters, 20 meters, whatever. If you have time. It's going for tomorrow too. I think so. I don't remember when it quits, but anyway, then you just have to know your class and so. Right. And then I don't know, you're probably, you're just gonna be at a number one one transmitter and then probably. I think a lot of people are aces, but those are from their house. I know you could probably be a one Oscar because you, you're on battery power. So there you go. Anyway, you'd have to look at the stupid rules, but anyway, maybe you could be that one Oscar and then Sierra Victor for your sections. Yeah, Sacramento.
Speaker A: Yeah, I could give it a try, but you know, it would just be enough to be able to say I operated a little tiny bit because I want to keep going on this construction. By the way, W1TLO 10 meter beacon came up when I put it into, put it into Google. So. And propagation beacons and high altitude balloon trackers. Interesting.
Speaker B: What were they doing with that balloon site? You said some APRs balloon. Are they doing some sort of propagation with that or are they trying to get stations with it or what?
Speaker A: I don't know. They were using a non standard APRs frequency so they would have to be tracking the balloon directly rather than getting help from the APRS system. So I don't know. Now that one that went all around the world, that one was on the regular APRS frequency. I should have asked for that. That one rather than the other one. I should have asked for the call from the one that was going around the world rather than the one that. Because I didn't know the one, the big one was an oddball APRS deal. So. Yeah, that's a different story.
Speaker B: Well, I guess what I was saying is you're not working on the siding tonight, so you could listen on 40 meters or even on JS8 if you got that running or to get it running,
Speaker A: I might feel up to it. I still got to eat though. I haven't eaten and got a lot to do. But if I feel up to it, I'll do something.
Speaker B: Yeah, that doesn't even register in my brain. I haven't eaten. That's only something guys like you can do.
Speaker A: What, work all day and not eat? Yeah, a little bit.
Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. I mean if I'm working, I don't be concerned too much about it. But I mean, still I. There came a point when I could tell I needed, you know, my blood sugar thing that dropped or whatever. I could tell. So I had to go and get my, my food out. So I need something and then I reverse the other direction.
Speaker A: Yeah, when I get going I'm pushing pretty hard. And I want to get this siding done. Because if I get it done and then I have to extend the roof a little bit. But the combination is going to take care of a whole heck of a lot of problems. Boy, that wind was really ripping on the mostly destroyed building that I've been working on. It was ripping it. I actually had to get out there, and I don't want it to come down yet. So I had to get out there and tell. And fix some stuff that happened last time, too. When the wind was really ripping. It grabbed the whole roof. And I had to push the whole roof back down and reattach it. Oh, my God.
Speaker B: I don't see the hold up. Get that thing down.
Speaker A: Yeah, I. I'm pretty much ready. I do need to find out about the permit thing. I see people are paying the standard fee, and then people like John are saying what? Don't even think about it. Just make it go away. So I don't.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know. I always think about what's the worst case scenario. I mean, it's not like you're going to go to jail over it. Right. I don't think they'd fine you over it. It's just like, well, you know, you got to make the paperwork straight now. Now you got to pay the fee. Well, maybe the fee goes up at that point. And I guess that would be the, you know, where it might be one fee today and it might be one fee in a year. Right.
Speaker A: Well, I looked it up and they're charging everybody the same fee, $168.
Speaker B: Stuff. Then they start checking paperwork out and stuff like that.
Speaker A: It's pure gravy for them. I mean, they don't do a darn thing to get that money. That department, you know, makes me so angry. It was all it was at first. It was designed to improve the concept of structures that were safe and blah, blah, blah, and blah, blah, blah. And they even have one rule for doughboy pool. To protect the children in the neighborhood. You're supposed to have a fence around it. Well, right next door there was one right out. Extremely visible from the street that a baby died in.
Speaker B: Well, you better be careful. You know, you might turn in your conservative. You want to get rid of the tyrannical rules of certain towns and stuff like stuff like this. I mean, because you're on the same pages, you're basically speaking. Speaking in a choir where we think some of these rules are stupid. So, like some of these permits and things like that. But anyway. Yep. So sounds like we can agree on some things once in a while.
Speaker A: Yeah. The people that are in power politically now, the board of Supervisors are dead set against what that department's doing. But they haven't. Still haven't changed anything. Still doing everything it was doing before. And the city, they kind of do their own thing. I don't know what goes on with the city, but the county is. The county's had big battles, and eventually the people that were on the side of the guy that was having the battle with them took power. So, you know, you would think there'd be some changes, but I don't think there are have been any.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, the one thing that stands true, no matter what side of the political aisle a person is both of them like money. They collect money with taxes. None of them want to get rid of it, really. They don't want to get rid of their own money coming in. Right. They just want. We just want to complain about it on the other side of things. But they could use that money for something. They don't want to go away.
Speaker A: Well, it certainly isn't fulfilling the function that they claimed it was going to when they put all these different planning commission departments together. It's a real joke. It's purely a way to gather money now. Has nothing to do with the safety of the public at all or improving buildings or anything like that.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, I can say the same thing about our gas taxes, because I drive these roads a lot, and most of them aren't improving any. Some are getting worse, so that's just my opinion. But anyway. And then they want more money for, like, registration your vehicles that charge you a certain amount per mile. That's something that's in the works in addition to what you're already paying.
Speaker A: Well, not to change the subject, but did you end up using a N Fed half wave or what did you do?
Speaker B: No, they were already running a couple of the horizontal, you know, half waves and stuff like that out there. So I just put up the vertical. That was it. No big deal. And we managed like, I think we're about 85 contacts. Most of them are CW.
Speaker A: I thought maybe a. Some guy wires might help if there's a lot of wind, like just, you know, tiny strings or just some kind of something. Wouldn't take a real guy wire. It's just. You know what I'm talking about?
Speaker B: Yeah. Well, there was trees. They decided to go to a spot where there was oak trees all around so the oak trees would hold stuff up. Okay. I think at 15 meters, the quarter wave width is not very tall. So that didn't bother any. I got stuck in the ground really good. But if they went to an open area and you had to use like your own poles or something. Yeah. You would have had to guy it for sure.
Speaker A: I think I would. If I were to do something on 10 or maybe even 15, I'd build one of these extra long. It's like a Slim Jim but it's for. I have one up now for 10 and I can imagine for 15 it would be quite an impressive antenna because it's got a lot of gain. A lot more than a vertical quarter way vertical.
Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if he would have done much better today. Maybe a little, but just I don't think the band was quite in as well. 15 was okay. I don't think 10 was. Was that great. I'll have to ask Jeremy later.
Speaker A: Well, I got that K1DLO beacon all day. I don't know if he shut it off or what happened, but it went away at night here. I guess there's one. Well, there's some that are on the same frequency that are not his and coming from Mexico and so. So I guess I'd have to decode the TW that they're putting out so I know what the what which.

Speaker A: Well that's cool. At least you were contributing to. Was it a point thing or what were they doing?
Speaker B: Yeah and I heard Japan one time but they wouldn't. Didn't come, you know, didn't come back again so couldn't. We couldn't complete that one anyway. Well it's the winter field day so you, you know, you fill out the log and. Yeah, it's to the clubs. It's using the club call sign so they get the credit. You only get a credit as far as you know, since we're in a poda park you can get the poda credit as an operator so that's nice. You get an activation out of it.
Speaker A: Yeah, that's what OFG likes to do. Take photo credit plus whatever else is going on. Anyway. Yeah, I'm gonna go make dinner and make a fire. I'm gonna. Getting kind of cool. Let's see, it's down to 65 in here and 49 outside so it's not really cold but I'm just feeling cold I guess.

This is Newsline, Amateur Radio's first independent on the air News and Bulletin service. Now reporting from Wadsworth, Ohio, here's Stephen Kenford in awp. Our top story this week is the most severe solar radiation storm in more than 20 years. It began on Monday, January 19th and lasted through much of the week. The National Weather Service declared the storm to be at an S4 level, a degree of severity not seen since October of 2023. S4 is the second highest level of this type of storm. The storm severity, which exceeded that of the one in October of 2023 disrupted the HF ban, challenging ham radio operators while creating spectacular auroral displays. A bipartisan agreement among the US Lawmakers could restore the government's financial support of Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and other federally funded news services. Kent Peterson, KC0DGY has that story. U.S. lawmakers in Washington, D.C. have reached a deal that would fund the Voice of America giving its parent organization, the U.S. agency for Global Media, an estimated $653 million. That figure is considerably lower than the annual $860 million provided previously to the agency as described on the Radio World website. The funds would also pay for restoration of operations for Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia. A minimum of $30 million is earmarked for medium and shortwave programming by the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. The deal is part of a larger spending bill, the National Security Department of State and Programs Appropriations Act. It has the support of both parties in Congress and its funding plan goes against the White House's executive order from last year which shut the international news services. Even if the measure receives final approval from the House and Senate, it will still require the President's signature. This is Ken Peterson, KC0BTY. The NASA's Artemis 2 mission began its long awaited journey to the moon and back on sight Saturday 17th January with the Rockets rollout onto the launch pad at the Kennedy Space center in Florida. Now reporting from Wadsworth, Ohio, here's Stephen Kenford, nawb. Our top story this week is the most severe solar radiation storm in more than 20 years. It began on Monday, January 19th and lasted through much of the week. The National Weather Service declared the storm to be at an square four level, a degree of severity not seen since October of 2023. S4 is the second highest level of this type of storm. The storm severity, which exceeded that of the one in October of 2023 disrupted the HF ban, challenging ham radio operators while creating spectacular auroral displays. A bipartisan agreement among the US Lawmakers could restore the government's financial support of Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and other federally funded news services. Ken Peterson, KC0TGY has that story. U.S. lawmakers in Washington, D.C. have reached a deal that would fund the Voice of America giving its parent organization, the U.S. agency for Global Media, an estimated $653 million. That figure is considerably lower than the annual $860 million provided previously to the agency as described on the Radio World website. The funds would also pay for restoration of operations for Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia. A minimum of $30 million is earmarked for medium and shortwave programming by the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. The deal is part of a larger spending bill, the National Security Department of State and Related Programs Appropriations Act. It has the support of both parties in Congress and its funding plan goes against the White House's executive order from last year which shut the international news source services. Even if the measure receives final approval from the House and Senate, it will still require the President's signature. This is Ken Peterson, KC0DGY the NASA's Artemis 2 mission began its long awaited journey to the moon and back on Saturday 17 January with the Rockets rollout onto the launch pad at the Kennedy Space center in Florida. So the next time it poked out, and it was a bummer because it'd come right through the pillowcase and you'd scrape your face on it. I was afraid it was going to get me in the eye. So the next time it poked its head out, I meticulously pushed it through further and cut it off. And it was sharp. It did have a point on it. So that's what you got to do. No, I'd send that back. I hate to buy something from a company that isn't working with you, but the other thing is that I have had to do it before. It's past the date, you know, the 30 days of returning it like Amazon or. It's past the date. It's been three months, four months. But it's, it's, it's still not what I would paid for. I just buy some, another one from them and then return the first one you got. But you know, that's kind of adverse to buy from them after they already sold you an inferior product. I think there is a they. They. All those feathers should get cut off blunt. They shouldn't have sharp edges. Otherwise they went through the deal and it cut it on an angle. Yeah, there's no, there's no quality control there if you're getting more than one. One coming through. I never had any more trouble with that pillow, by the way. Just had one sharp one in there. And that was back in the day when pillowcases had a pretty thick skin on them. Remember blue and white stripes, real small. Wasn't corduroy looking, but there were long lines just one direction and a lot of pillows were that way as I remember.

No, you want to grow it a couple of times so that you have plenty for the part you mix with the dough. Yeah. Yep. I've watched whole bunches of them with Lori and the one girl, she makes the easiest. No measuring, no weighing, no nothing. Simply the consistency. You start off with a handful, maybe a handful and a half, two handfuls of flour, and you mix your water and this and that, all with it, and you stir it up until you get a certain consistency. That chick doesn't matter what you start with weight wise. You add the water until you have a certain consistency, and that's what you work toward it. You know, if you need to add a little flour or a little more water, so be it. And there you are. Yeah, I liked her way of doing it. I mean, they weren't. They didn't have things to weigh stuff with back in the cowboy days, you know, and they just got used to making bread by the consistency.

Speaker B: Yeah. So, yeah, I got a pretty good gain antenna on this radio. So. I don't know if you heard me, but when I was going down on Friday, I. Three contacts on 20 meters, Idaho, Colorado.
Speaker A: Oh, that sounds good.
Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. So not too bad. One, Idaho was really good. It was a Kodak. Then it was 15 over 9. So I was making it pretty good. I wanted these sounds pretty strong.
Speaker A: Had the radio on yesterday a little bit.
Speaker B: 40 meters was really hopping. Okay, good deal.
Speaker A: No, I didn't try. I was doing some other stuff
Speaker B: this morning.
Speaker A: I actually sat behind the updated the
Speaker B: firmware on the new radio.
Speaker A: I realized my DX10 radio.
Speaker B: Okay.
Speaker A: Now, it was pretty easy once I read through all the directions to make sure I didn't mess anything up pretty much it was dropping onto the flashback there. Tell the radio to update. It does its thing. You got to reset the radio after you're done
Speaker B: programming with that. Can you save what you have in the radio to a file or if you have like a RT system software, save it or anything like that?
Speaker A: Yeah, either way, you can save it to the flash drives on the radio.
Speaker B: I don't know if it saves the
Speaker A: memory, but I do have the RT system for that radio. So I had them saved in that. So I was able to record everything after I've done.
Speaker B: Okay, good deal. Yeah. So. Yeah, I'm just driving up Highway 99 now. It's all the crazy drivers. It was sunny most of the time, so not too bad. It's sunny down here near Bakersfield now. Going north, right?
Speaker A: Yeah, it's kind of cold and overcast here.
