Speaker A: Yeah, good afternoon. I'm sure I'm going to visit my mom in rehab and head home from there. What are you up to?
Speaker B: Doing my honey do's and my chores. I haven't been up to much. Just hanging out down in the man cave.
Speaker A: That's what you do every time I'm talking to you, man. You got the life, man. I'm telling you, the life of a prince.
Speaker B: Now this retirement, it's just great. Sometimes I wonder though if it's all tight.
Speaker A: Just supposed to be.
Speaker B: But other than getting old, I think
Speaker A: I continue the good part of it. Yeah, there you go. All right.
Speaker B: Well, nothing much. Nothing much new here.
Speaker A: Going on same old, same old. Got a little bit of travel coming up.
Speaker B: The end of the month.
Speaker A: I got one of my counterparts from one of the companies I work with is flying into town. Well, actually he's probably here by now. Coming by tomorrow to work and have a couple of meetings. Go have a. Have a nice dinner tomorrow night. Then he flies back to Alabama on Thursday. So it'll be nice to see him.
Speaker B: Go down to that radio show. Say again? Going down to that radio show. When they give you all the different radios that are new coming out.
Speaker A: Oh yeah, the Yuma Ham Fest. Yeah, driving down there the last Friday of the month, whatever date that is. I don't have a calendar in front of me, but probably around the, I don't know, whatever day that is. Yeah, we're leaving Friday morning for the show. I think it opens around noon or so. It takes about 5 hours ish. To get to Yuma from here. And we're coming back Sunday morning.
Speaker B: That ought to be some fun. You ought to enjoy that. That'll be a little rest for you other than the driving.
Speaker A: Yeah, I always think about flying but you know, by the time I probably have to fly to Phoenix or I'm not sure what the closest major airport is, you know, by the time you screw with all that stuff and mess around with TSA and you know, get the rental car and yada, yada yada, you've almost got, you know, but you know, having get to the airport early and everything, you're almost at five hours anyway. So just drive, stay the heck with it.
Speaker B: Probably less headache. You'll at least get cheap stuff on the way down too.
Speaker A: They hate how to see. Yes, they are a lot of desert. But anyways, I don't mind flying. I'm a Delta guy and they Always really treat me well. So I don't mind that at all.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm just going back to pain management tomorrow with my neck, I guess. I went talk to the orthopedic and he says the only thing he could do is fuse it. But he was really good with me, he told me, he says, I can fuse it, but you ain't gonna be happy. He says a lot of times that don't help. He says, Isaac, besides, you ought to
Speaker A: stick with pain, man. It's interesting. One of the guys I work with up in. Well, he's up in South Salt Lake City area. Tooele, actually, but it's my general area. He went into surgery today, got his neck fused. He's a young guy, though. He's probably crap, upper 30s maybe, but some kind of injury he had way back in the military days, I think. And he went under the knife today. He's going to be out of work for about three or four weeks, recovering.
Speaker B: Well, I hope he's a young guy, maybe it'll work for him. But this guy told. This surgeon, told me that he could confuse it for me, but I guarantee you, you might not be satisfied with it because you're going to be limited in your turning your head back and forth. And he says it ain't a good guarantee that you're going to be relieved of all your pain. I kind of opt out. He says, I think for your age, I'd stick with pain management.
Speaker A: And what does. What does pain management tell? Just medicine or physical therapy or hybrid or what.
Speaker B: They do shots in your neck to enter the nerve. And I think I'm going back for. They're going to try to do laser to burn the ends of the nerves. I talked to a couple of people that had it done and they said at last it's been over a year. And they got complete the. And then he said, after that, there's certain medications I can use that aren't too severe on me that would numb it. And like today I was really bad with it. And I just loaded up on 800 Ibuprofen and it helped. It numbed it up a little bit.
Speaker A: Okay, I got it. I got it. All right, well, cool. As long as it's manageable, right? And I imagine I would presume your insurance covers the majority or all of it,
Speaker B: Or it's covered everything on there so far, so we'll just see how far it goes. They did recommend therapy. You know, where you go. I guess I don't know what they do in therapy, but this surgeon because sometimes that helps go to therapy. So they've got me appointment for next Thursday. We'll see therapy soon.
Speaker A: Maybe they put you in one of those inverted things. They strap the hanging upside down for a while. I know people that have had, you know, neck and spine challenges and things like that, they'll do that to kind of decompress the discs.
Speaker B: Ma', am, right here. Table, right here in this basement with where my man cave is just outside of it. I do that for my back. I hang upside down like a bat for a while until I get dizzy. And I do it off and on for during the week. And it does help a little bit. I don't know what the therapy does. I'll let you know after.
Speaker A: Okay, good deal. Have you narrowed in on your. Your dentist appointment here in Vegas or not?
Speaker B: I keep asking my wife, when's her dentist appointment? And she says, well, I'll call them and find out for sure, but because I know it's for later next month.
Speaker A: So I said, okay,
Speaker B: you don't let me know until the day I usually have to go. And I told her, I said, I gotta know beforehand. She said she would call them, but she ain't done it.
Speaker A: Okay, so it's in March. I thought it was. I thought it was this month, so. Okay, cool. Don't know what I have going on in March. I know the last week of this month I'm gone, but other than that, I don't think I'm leaving.
Speaker B: Okay. How did your wife show go down there? Where's your hand?
Speaker A: Went good. Went to Long beach and saw, you know, saw some of the vendors and some of the new machines and hoops and products and stuff like that that they have. So she had a good time to see. Seeing everybody and, like, see on YouTube that have, like, a little demonstrations of how you do this, how you do that. I guess some of those folks are there, so. No, it was good. It was a good time, I think. Well, I know. I'm glad that. I know that she is glad that she went. So. Yeah, it was good.
Speaker B: Yeah. I'm just hiding down here in my man cave. I come after I get my chores. I come back down here and play around with whatever I can find to do. I had a friend who traded some rifles, and I had to be the mediator because he was out of town. So I did the swap for him, and they were both happy. So I guess it went well.
Speaker A: Yeah, good deal. All right. Well, you're sounding good. So the receiver's working well. Still haven't I'm trying to, I'm talking to my, my partner in crime down here at 7lb. We're trying to think about maybe making a trip to Highland Peak before the next race, which I think is like in April just to go through this fight. Speaker A: It could be cranked up a bit and probably some audio quality adjustments, but minor stuff like that. It's working great. I'm just nitpicking, that's all. But it's a hell of a drive, as you probably know, from Vegas up to there. That's freaking eight to 10 hours. Just the road and the time on the radio site. So if we do it, we'll probably get a hotel someplace and what the hell, I'm just about to tip my tongue.

Last time we had major work to do up there. I ended up actually staying in the site. It's a big building. I took some stuff up there and just spent the night up there because instead of driving back that evening, got some work done the next day. But you know, going to a site, it's always. Yeah, it's only going to take me a few minutes. Ends up taking several hours and time escapes.

Speaker B: Bill. Good evening. My name is Dan. I'm up in Penn Valley just trying to program a radio.
Speaker A: Nice. Well, Dan, in Penn Valley. Yes, nice. I just crossed over Lake Oroville at the Lime Saddle Marina area. From Lake Oroville. Yep. Headed back towards Chico.
Speaker B: Well, that's good. Yeah, I haven't been over here in a long, long time. So just programming the radio and with some of the local stuff. Yep.
Speaker A: Well, it is a stretch from where the repeater is, I think, to where you are. So I think because of that, you know, it's a little white noise in there, but sounds good. Thank you very much.
Speaker B: Repeater sounds good up here. Like I say, I've been over here for years, a lot with this call and a different one, my original call, but used to drive a propane tanker.
Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. Well, how far did you travel in California? Did you go as far north as, like, Reading? Yeah.
Speaker B: And we hauled a lot out of Oroville, but the company was based Bakersfield. And then we started hauling out of the Bay Area. We went all the way up to Susanville. Now, tourists. And we went up to Redding a few times, but mostly California, but it was all the west slope. And we went as far south as Merced,
Speaker A: so.
Speaker B: And everything over. All the way over Watsonville and Santa Cruz Air.
Speaker A: Yeah. I used to be good friends with a guy who was the owner of the Allied Propane Service, you know, out of the Napa Valley area. And I think they had a place in like, the Bay Area over that way, too, but big place. But anyway, everyone's passed away now. We're all too old. Yeah, that is an issue.
Speaker B: And all the guys you used to run with, you know. Well, I quit driving Trailport 25 years ago, but did that job for two years. And there was a news, a guy up in paradise that. Well, he drove their transport up there for. And then I did. I drove transport for 10 years and drove Bob Hill around local for 25.
Speaker A: Yeah, I used to do business with a propane, you know, place that's been in paradise for a long time before the campfire. And now I think a lot of that stuff's all changed hands and stuff now. But anyway, used to know some of those guys pretty good. But like, right now, still doing a little bit of business with Triflame. Triflame Propane and then a little bit of K gas propane in Oroville, so. But these are just small mom and pop kind of places, really.
Speaker B: Yeah. Well, that's kind of the best one. I worked well the first company I drove for was Coast. Well, the main office was in Watsonville. Trucks all came out of Bakersfield. I was stationed at Oroville. Used to run with Randy. His son was in 62. He was in. He lives in Gridley from Air Gap and he changed his call there. But anyway, that's been a long time ago. And there was a number of propane drivers, transport drivers that had radios in their truck. So we had to all the time.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, that sounds like fun. Part of it does. Not the traffic in the Bay Area, but you know, you were heading up north and Alsuras and all that. That doesn't sound bad at all. Yeah, that wasn't one of our normal
Speaker B: haunts that you out of. The driver who was stationed up in Bordertown just north of Reno, so he did all the Nevada stuff for the most part. Summertime we'd go up to Alturas and into all that. But it was good. I liked the job and like. Well, actually that was a pretty good company. But then they got bankruptcies and sets. They got bought by somebody else. I still worked with them for 10 years or so. I suppose it wasn't what I wanted to do. Corporate took over and they kind of trashed the whole business.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, the first time I was certified to dispense propane was probably sometime around 191988 or something like that. I worked for the rental yards then, and we had to fill propane for the forklift and for customers in their little barbecue tanks and stuff like that. It was pretty fun. And even then we charged a lot of money for that kind of stuff. But that was fun stuff. And then I worked for the rental business for a bigger company, United Rentals, for few. Quite a. A while too. So I was certified to dispense propane back in those days, but nothing bigger than that. But we certainly did a lot of forklift stuff and those Genies, all kinds of stuff like that that we had to fill up all the time. So pretty fun. And then I was in the RV business where we had to deal with propane tanks on all the RVs too. But we just took them to the local paradise place there and had them filled there. So I didn't really have to do a whole lot in that regard. But propane was fun for me. It was just one of the things that we had to do in addition to other job duties.
Speaker B: Yeah, it could be a necessary evil. It's all safe if you treat it right. I used to help bundle of railcars, drove the transport and did all kinds of stuff. And then we did. When I quit driving transport, we did a bunch of, you know, service work around at the houses and different things. You know, all the residential customers and all that. But the guy, I was trying to remember what the guy's name used to drive the transport for Reliance. He used to come down Orville load all the time. But they would load his. That old Kinhwan cabble that they had, they would load that on a flat car up there at the yard in Oroville. Then they'd run up the canyon and fill all the tanks up at the switches up the canyon.
Speaker A: Yeah, that guy that I know there, I think he was really into firearms and he was good. He was a good shot too. His target shooting like Scott, I think was his name. And I've had some dealings with him. Pretty, pretty nice guy. Right now for some reason his last name's kind of avoiding my mind.
Speaker B: Yeah, names have never been one of my strong suits. Yeah, I really enjoyed the job. It just always seemed like that was what I was supposed to do. But I retired five years ago. So I had. I had 30, 29 and a half years in on propane and I did multiple other stuff for, you know, 25 years before that.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, that sounds like plenty of work. You definitely did your time. So. Yeah, now. Now you can play on the radio a little bit and have some fun that way, right?
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't play with the radio a whole lot. I need to get back into it. But there's always, you know, other chores to do and other things to occupy one's time with.

Speaker B: All right. Yeah, I got a couple things from ebay today and woke up really sore. I got a sore part of my leg and it's still really sore, so I don't know. Not quite getting any better yet. Okay.
Speaker A: Yeah. So is it a muscle you pulled or something from doing some of the work you've been doing?
Speaker B: Well, that's what it feels like, but how that happened, I have no idea.
Speaker A: Yeah, someone I know tore their meniscus and didn't know what they did to deserve that. They didn't fall or nothing. So. I don't know. Sometimes things just happen, I guess.
Speaker B: Well, they say when they get old, the parts wear out.
Speaker A: I got a new CW key. It's from N0SA, I think he's out of Mississippi. He builds these paddles. He calls it the RLP paddle. Anyway, it's kind of like a modern Morse. It's a very lightweight, smaller paddle for doing portable operations.
Speaker B: What do you think of it?
Speaker A: Oh, yeah, I'm liking it a lot better than that rinky dink kind of little magnet thing, as far as the quality, how it works, and I can key in faster and not make mistakes. Well, that's cool.
Speaker B: Yeah, I started a little bit more in depth on the. On the barrel, trying to get it figured out. I'm looking at a really good manual, and there's still no. Nothing. Nothing helping me at all. But I did find one thing that's available on the Android version of the app that goes with it. That so far I can't find it on the Apple version, so. And if it had it, boy, that's the first thing I would push. Basically turns the speaker on and off.
Speaker A: Okay, so you're talking about that general thing that the Noble Version not, not the handheld or are we talking about the ht?
Speaker B: Well the apps are the same for both mobile and handheld but I've been trying to work with mobile.
Speaker A: Well, the only one I know that pretty hard is that Steve guy forgetting his call something 9 FG or something temporarily online this YouTube channel and he always talks about highly about the Varro so I guess maybe you can send him an email
Speaker B: well, there's one guy that I need to research that guy and see if he got into the Vero because if he did he gets into fine details right in his videos I mean he talks about every single teeny tiny thing that you could need to know. He's a British guy.
Speaker A: Tech minds maybe, I don't know, I, I watch tech minds. He's pretty cool but I don't think he's what you're talking about anyway. Or the radio prepper anyway. Yeah, I don't know what are you trying to do on it? Because I mean you have two of them, don't you?
Speaker B: Just trying to get audio out of it.
Speaker A: Is this the original one or is this the second one?
Speaker B: It's the second one,
Speaker A: Yeah I really think those were really made to be repaired too much but you think it's just a setting or something that's not right?
Speaker B: Oh yeah, I'm almost positive in fact the microphone works. It puts out really loud stuff that you know, it's just everything but the radio audio, you know, the, all the beeps and all the other stuff it does fine Too loud actually. I've got the, I've got the actual Apple version of the instruction manual for the software on the screen right now so I may find something that'd be really nice because this radio would do everything I need. It's got plenty of power and does aprs better than almost anything.
Speaker A: Seems like come a long ways because I remember when I was first talking to you were on that 710 a lot and then you started getting on the Yaesu a lot now both those, I don't hear you on them ever so I mean you're never driving hardly so when you are then I guess I would hear you on the 710 I guess but anyway, yeah and then now we're down to little HTs and Vero that don't work so it's like wow, come on, I'd like to hear you on one of those other ones again.
Speaker B: Oh, I've been mobile with the 710 a bunch of times. Never hear you.
Speaker A: Yeah, oh yeah, I'm working or something like that. I'm not paying attention, but I just remember those days, that's all. I can have good memories of that.
Speaker B: Yeah. The 8900 was the, the best setup I had here was the easiest to use it. It was easiest to grab. The microphone sounded good. I like to get that going again.
Speaker A: Otherwise, you know, we've got ICOM coming out with their new radio pretty soon, too. The 5200. I'll bet you that would be out in a couple months.
Speaker B: Yeah. Now, one thing that might work for me to. If I just grab this BT microphone that they have, they have this little accessory that you can use, but I think this radio is actually capable of using just about any, any headset. But some of them, I'm not sure exactly how you make them do a push to talk, but I'm. I'm still learning about this radio. I do like it, though. From the aprs viewpoint, there's nothing, nothing better. I mean, you can, you can come up with the stuff, but it takes. It's a lot more hassle to come up with it. This, this is easy to operate on apr.

Speaker A: Kn6mgk back to being mobile. Well, I'd be curious N6 GRT if you're still out there. Still got that sighting job done?
Speaker B: Yeah, I did get it done. I decided to do it. In the way that it's more typical. Which means that you install the insulation by attaching it to the siding. Because the way that was set up, I already had the Sheetrock on the inside, so. So I went ahead and put this. Put the siding up and I'm gonna have to take the Sheetrock off to put the insulation in. That's just the way it goes.
Speaker A: Okay. Yeah. So anyway, what is the matter? Ideas anyway. But you got it done and you put some paint on it.
Speaker B: I don't have the paint. I'd put it on there if I had it.
Speaker A: Is it primed at siding? Nope.
Speaker B: It's just regular siding like you usually get. I don't know who has prime siding?
Speaker A: Oh, yeah, they. They sell it. Yeah. Yeah, they sell it. But yeah, you don't get many choices when you buy it primed. Pre primed. And it's only primed on. On the outside, not on the inside.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, that'd be normal. You wouldn't prime it on the inside. But yeah, These were kind of unusual sheets. They were. I. The only thing that's. Well, it's fairly impressive how it turned out. They had 8 inch centers. I matched them as best as I could. There's only one piece that didn't match.
Speaker A: Yeah, I prime mine inside and out if I can. Yeah. And then of course, after you cut it, I gotta prime that edge too.
Speaker B: I can see priming the edge, but I can't see priming the inside. No way. That's a waste.
Speaker A: Siding that's primer.
Speaker B: If you've ever looked at siding that's not primed on the inside, after it's been up for 20 years, it looks exactly the same as when it was first put up. I mean, it's just perfect.
Speaker A: Yeah, it's each zone. Yeah, it doesn't matter. I mean, yeah, it can be a waste, I agree. But at the same time, you know, it protects it too. So I don't know just what I've done. So I'm not putting up a big. A big building. If I was doing a big building, that'd be different. But anyway. Anyway, that's cool. I guess we're gonna get some weather coming this weekend. So that's why I was questioning about having it climbed on the outside. Anything exterior. But anyway, I guess you'll just do it Later.
Speaker B: Well, I'm not seeing the weather for the weekend and I've been watching.
Speaker A: Yeah, Sunday night, that's what I'm seeing. So it's not really the weekend. Yeah, starting about Sunday night they're saying. But just a tiny amount here. Quarter inch maybe.
Speaker B: Oh yeah, I looked again. Obviously did not read it. Or maybe this is an update. But yep, it's a storm coming. I'm going to have to look at the Weather Underground version.
Speaker A: Yeah, people are getting hot on those Starlink minis. All of a sudden they've dropped the price down to like 199 bucks for the equipment. And some people are getting them for free if they already have the other Starlink for the equipment. And then they're having to pay like 25 bucks a month for 100 gigs. But anyway, you can get the $5 a month plan just to kind of keep it active and then make it pay them more money, like 50 bucks to get the hundred gigs or something like that. If you wanted to use it for that.
Speaker B: Well, for home Internet. The fiber here, which I really doubt is the lowest price fiber you can get. But the fiber here is unlimited.
Speaker A: Yeah, but you can't take it with you. I don't know. I just got my bill. 100 bucks, 103 bucks. So damn, that's cool. Call him to see if I can get him to knock it down again. I do that every few months. You have to keep on top of it. Everything's expensive. Cell phones, 140 bucks. 100 bucks for Internet, you got the direct TVs. Another hundred bucks.
Speaker B: It's getting ridiculous. Fiber was 69 out here. And that's with a 1 gigabyte speed, I think it is. And unlimited. Unlimited data.
Speaker A: Do they allow for static IPs? That's a major.
Speaker B: I don't know, I've never had it. That static IP might be something I was trying to deal with. With All Star. There was something that was kind of a hang up.
Speaker A: Yeah, that'd be it. Yeah. If you can't open your ports and have a static ip, it cause you nothing but trouble.
Speaker B: Yep, that sounds like what was happening. And the reason I just stopped trying with it when I figured that was gonna happen.
Speaker A: Yeah, a lot of things like that. Gamers know that too. So they gotta open up all their ports and have. What do you call that? A. Trying to think of what the word they use. Anyway, I don't know why I'm forgetting it, but it locks down their router.
Speaker B: Well, it seems like you shouldn't have to do that sort of thing.
Speaker A: Yeah, they have port forwarding and stuff like that too. Isolates it so that. So you can't hack into it. So they only open up certain ports to whatever it is. So that's pretty important too. Yeah, just like on the kind of different subject, but you know, on the HAM radio stuff like for operating cat, you know, on the icons and stuff they have those certain numbers you have to use for the 7300 for the CIB and all that. Yeastu doesn't really have that stuff, but icon does. That's pretty particular. So yeah, you gotta use the right numbers in the right spots to make everything work.
Speaker B: One of the guys mentioned that he thought that the TIV might be the problem with the ICOM change. You know, the change in the FTA status and all that sort of thing. But I now have a copy of Mint and Mint and one other program and Rusty Villa.
Speaker A: Yeah. What edition of Mint do you have? Is it the most current one? And is it like the. The xface interface or is it the Cinnamon edition or which one?
Speaker B: I might be able to tell you that pretty quick here.
Speaker A: I always grew accustomed to the Cinnamon Edition. I just kept running that all the time. But other people like other. When they caught gooeys or whatever, graphic interfaces and all that. So they prefer other things.
Speaker B: I doubt that it runs on a, on a PI, whatever I've got.
Speaker A: Yeah, nope, pretty doubtful that's for a full fledged desktop or something of that power range. Cinnamon, especially the Cinnamon Edition. But yeah, they don't work very good even on smaller laptops and stuff because they do require some resources to do all the things. They're preloaded with all the codecs and right from the gate you can make videos and all kinds of stuff.

Speaker A: Yeah, well you can go on distro watch or whatever and look at all the different. There's like 100 Linux operating systems there but usually you stay within the top 10 or so. But anyway, then you'll navigate to that page and just download whatever you want yourself, right. And then burn the iOS to a little SD card or something. Whatever your going to dog on. It doesn't take that long.

Speaker A: Well anyway you got it figured out, I'm gonna head inside up in my driveway for a few minutes. So I'll head inside and we'll maybe yak about it tomorrow or something if you're around. Yep. Speaker A: Oh yeah, yeah a lot of times I installed Knoppix on my USB drive flash drives and then so that way there I had the whole operating system on the flash flash drive. So I can walk up to anyone else's computer, pop that in boot off of my thumb drive, flash drive, whatever you want to call it back then, you know, I think we had about eight gig was about the biggest you could have anyway. Which is laughable to me. You can't even find them I'm sure. Anyway. But yeah, I have the whole operating system on there. It's pretty light. And then I could do all kinds of stuff. Stuff I could check all my emails, whatever. I could even use something on their hard drive and clean it all up for them. Then when I unbooted they would have a clean hard drive with nothing on it. That would be very mean but I could do that with Mopic. Yeah, because it had the it Had a hard drive, you know, eraser on it, essentially. So. So, yeah, not good. But I could do that. I could go in there and do all kinds of stuff. But anyway, it was fun because you could just go to any. I could go to any business where I was working or whatever, plug that in at lunchtime, whatever, and have my own system where I could navigate the Internet, whatever, and then when I pulled it out, booted back onto their system and they would never know I was there.
Speaker B: Yeah, typical spy stuff. You're a hacker is what you are. Okay, Nopix, I've got that on a USB, Linux Mint 22.3 and Rescue Zilla. All three of them on different USBs.
Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, so I think what Ken was telling you at one time was about running it live or whatever, you know, that's what Micropix could do easily. So it was just such a light program. It was a little slower than what others were at the time, but I think it's faster now, especially with the faster write speeds and stuff they have. But anyway, it was fun. But it does sound like mostly what you have there is the other. I don't know about Rescue though, actually, but Mint is definitely for a little bit more capable machine for sure. All right, I'm gonna head inside. We'll see. This weekend is Minnesota's event and British Columbia's, which should be good for us, and Vermont, which is kind of a stretch. But I think it goes on all weekend, so that's a good thing. Last weekend was the single side band Sprint for about four hours Friday night or Saturday night, I guess it was, and I thought I would give that a try. It didn't go so well for me. I guess I'm out of practice. Practice tuning in stations and had a hard time tuning these guys in so that I could hear them. My idea was to operate for an hour or a little more. First half hour I only made one cuso and the second half hour went better. I made I think eight or eight in that half hour. And that was because I was calling cq. So those guys, the other guys had to tune me in and I didn't have to do the tuning. So I guess I'll have to work on that some. This weekend is a cw, CW version of the same Sprint. So I'm gonna give that a try some and hopefully it will go better than the single sideband one did. I think that's about it for me. Bill was talking about the flares from the sun and I was reading today that this enormous sunspot is facing right at us and will be looking at us all week. So I guess we could get more, more problems from them. Hopefully won't happen on the weekend, but I guess you never know. Okay, Jamie, thank you. And back to you. This is Larry, KF6NCX. Hey, Larry, a quick question. So you said you were having problems tuning, tuning in on ssv. I was going to ask you what power you were running, but I guess it sounds like hearing them was the problem. Yeah, the problem wasn't really. It was trying to hear them clearly. You know, I tune around and it just, it takes time for me anyway to get it tuned just right to where first you hear sort of a buzz and you say, oh, there's somebody on the, on the band right there. And then I would start moving it to try to make the buzz turn into a voice that was nice and clear and audible. Well, the thing, I guess in a regular single sideband contest, there's somebody sitting on a base band calling CQ over and over and over. So you hear the buzz. You can tune him in and he's there for a long time and you can tune him just right and then finally give him a call.

But in this Sprint, they have a funny rule where somebody who's calling CQ after he makes a contact, he has to move off the frequency at least 5 kilohertz. And usually the guy he was working then starts calling cue. So you don't get that opportunity for a long time to tune the guy in. So if I'd hear someone calling CQ and I'd start trying to tune him in, it took me so long to tune him in, by the time I would hear him, somebody else would have gotten him and was working him. So it was a tough proposition. I don't know why I had such a hard time. Maybe I'm just out of practice because I haven't been doing single side band much. That was. That was a sad story. Okay, back to you, Jamie. Well, I suppose if they were saying da, da, da, da, you'd probably tune them in faster. Well, that is the list as I have it for the roundtable. I don't know that it's because of the installation. He says, you know, you need to redo this. You need thicker gauge wire. You need some professional grade distributors, circuit breakers, the whole bit.
Speaker F: And I'm like, all right, do it. And he did it.
Speaker D: And oh my gosh, what a difference. Everything works 100% now all the time with everything on. No more problems with the phantom discharge that was going someplace. The only thing that actually got removed was about a six foot piece of

And I'm certainly thankful she's eight years from now and we are thankful for every day. So glad to hear that you had a good side to your treatment as well. And you know, hopefully sometime in our lifetime cancer will be, will be a thing of our past. I'd love to talked about that in history as I'm sure you and many others. Well, hopefully that air will get cleared out of that valley up there. Speaker C: You know, Brian, I have found over the Years in quite a few trips around the sun that the Super Bowls, where I do not have any vested

Speaker C: some of the more enjoyable for a number of reasons. One is I don't have a stake in the game, really. I can just enjoy good football, and hopefully it is good football. But the other is I can switch allegiance.
Speaker A: I can switch teams in the middle. So you're saying that my mistake this morning was actually rooting for the Seahawks. I should have stayed neutral till it was pretty much decided. Okay, lesson learned, Graydon. I'll learn from the master here.
Speaker C: We were in Concord. We had a Super bowl party one time, and I know one of the teams that was playing was the Cowboys. I don't remember who they were playing at the time, but a good friend of mine is from Texas, he was attending, and he was rooting for the Cowboys. I was rooting for the other team, and at halftime, the other team was just getting the, you know, what kicked out of them. So I went upstairs and put my cowboy boots on, my cowboy pants, my cowboy shirt, my cowboy hat, and I came down the stairs. And when I was in view of everybody, I said, how about them boys?
Speaker A: Okay? And then the party got started. Very good. No Super Bowl. I, you know, I grew up in the. In the Washington, and, you know, living down here, you know, I just. I don't know, split allegiance in a way. But, you know, I think once a Hawk fan, always a Hawk fan deep down inside, you know, we went through some painful years with them. Anyway, Graydon, let's see. Super bowl gonna be just. Are you gonna be watching the game at all?

Speaker C: The Olympics are gonna be on. I don't know how that's going to coordinate, whether. I'm pretty sure the Olympics are gonna be on one channel, football game is gonna be on another. We talked about it at dinner last night. In the general cons around the table was the Olympics take priority because once every four years and don't have anything really invested in the Super Bowl.
Speaker A: What I find interesting about the Olympics this year, you know, usually going into the Olympics, there's a lot of name recognition on different people participating. And of course, you know, really, the only thing, the only news I ever heard was about Lindsay, you know, falling during one of her last runs before the Olympics. And now she's going to be in. But beyond that, really don't know, you know, who the people are this year in the Olympics. So I'm going to be watching. I think Winter Olympics definitely My favorite of winter and summer. Definitely enjoy the winter. Well, good morning to you, Graydon. So, yes, I might be flicking between channels on Sunday.
Speaker C: There was. I just caught the tail end of it. But there was a controversy yesterday about one of the. I think it's called racing. The ones where the individual racers down through the icy. I'm not calling rotating, but solemn trail made of ice where they're laying flat on their stomach looking straight ahead. Controversy involving one of the American team that got squeezed out by some political move on the part of the Canadian. You know, it's unfortunate. Politics have to enter into everything.
Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. One thing you absolutely have to watch. I know you're not a big SNL fan, but I caught it on YouTube. You know, YouTube, you can go on there and look up just the individual skits. And this last weekend they had a skit on introducing the Winter Olympics participants. You know, it's all this, you know, commercial hype about, you know, I'm really looking forward, man, to ripping and shredding and. And they kept going back to the. She was a bobsledder, or maybe she was a skeleton and she didn't want to be there. She was scared to death of the route and. And her coach just kept pushing her down the hill and she would scream the whole. And it was quite funny. You'd get a kick out of it.
Speaker C: You know, I think the bobsled itself is scary enough. I don't know if I would do that. But the skeletons, the ones that go down face first, flat on their stomach staring at a wall of ice, I couldn't do that. I mean, if you impact that at the speeds they're going, it's pretty much all over. So kudos to them. Anyway, I better let you get back to the net. Speaker F: Well, I have to admit, Christina is not a Facebook person either. She did have a MySpace account for an awful lot of years and she kind of had the feeling. Same feeling I did when Facebook came out. This, like, stuff and crap was just too cutesy for us.
Speaker A: You know, I joined Facebook for two reasons. My daughter was on it at the time, and it was a way at the time that we were promoting business. And, you know, I haven't put a business post on my business account in probably two years now. And yet, you know, a couple times a day I'll spend way too much time scrolling. It is a total waste of time. And I keep saying I'm going to quit. Kind of like my taxes. I keep putting it off, though.
Speaker F: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You pay your taxes when you sell your snowmobile?

Speaker G: update on my HF journey and the plot thickens here on that journey. First of all, once again I want to thank Graydon Hicks for sending out
Speaker A: getting a hold of Gilbert.
Speaker G: Mr. Gilbert and Burton came out yesterday, spent about three hours at the house, checked for all sorts of static and came to the conclusion that I didn't have an excess static problem. Set up his gear in the backyard, made contacts in Utah and different locations and sounded real good. Came into the house, plugged it into the house, used the antenna that I had wire set up and he ran it to an outside antenna that he had and made great contacts. So we came to the conclusion that there's not a problem, so just don't
Speaker A: know what to think over. Well, were you observing the same interference you had checked in a few weeks ago on the Elmer Net and we had talked about that you were experiencing a high noise level at your house with a temporary setup that had been loaned to you. So yesterday were you hearing the same interference that you heard before or is there a possibility that the equipment that you had before might have been, you know, a bad power supply or something with the radio itself? What do you think?
Speaker D: Well, just not sure.
Speaker G: But I did not hear the same static level at all. And like I say, there was quite a bit of action going on and we did hear several locations and so, you know, we really didn't know what what to think. But the only thing is is he thinks I might ought to get a little bit better cable to run in on the HF side. And other than that I think I'm set to.

Speaker B: Well, that is so awesome. Three hours with Burton. You know, he's a very educated person. He used to do work on our repeater system up here. And I actually own a couple pieces of gear that used to belong to Burton. Definitely a very knowledgeable guy. And spend three hours with them. I'm sure it was a wealth of information. So now you're probably going to be possibly looking for, well, of course, new coax cable. But now I believe, I think next you are going to start researching and figuring out what radio you want, right?

Speaker A: That's exactly what I'm going to start doing. And probably in the next month or so I'm going to get the extra license first, probably and go ahead and just spend all my time doing that. Then after that's solidified, I'll probably buy me a HF radio and that'll give me time actually to review the HF

Speaker A: So probably a couple of months or so over.
Speaker B: Oh, very good. Don't know if you want to buy new or used, but I gotta say, the, the newer radios that are out on the market with their noise canceling and noise manipulation, you know, there have been some really big changes in radio design and you know, even though the old radios still work great, they definitely do not mitigate noise as well as the newer ones. And I gotta say, you know, I own a FTDX 10 others own like the, the FT1 Optimum. You know, there are so many different paths to go. The new 7300 Mark II. A lot of these radios out there just have wonderful, wonderful capabilities and you know, just. Yeah, I'm glad to hear you're going to take your time and kind of see what is the best fit for you. Speaker B: You know, I'll just hand it to your son. He definitely builds yagi antennas that are robust and probably would outlast roaches after a nuclear holocaust. No, and I don't know if you knew this, but you can actually use aluminum arrows. That is the basis for the arrow antenna. So if you buy aluminum arrows, they do have the threaded insert in them already. Just cut them to length.
Speaker D: Yeah, that's kind of what I was hinting to him. But you know Jayden. Yeah, he does build things robust and kind of from scratch.
Speaker B: And, you know, the bigger the better.
Speaker D: But it's a good idea, I think,
Speaker B: for his high school, they have to
Speaker D: do a personal project a couple a year and that's his next one. He wants to Build an aero antenna and probably try to talk to a satellite, demonstrate it to the school or, you know, Fox Hunt, whatever. But yeah, it'd be a good project. We'll be working on that shortly.

Speaker B: All right. What kind of CNC machine or what type of CNC design stuff do you do?
Speaker C: Well, I built one. I guess I started on it a couple years ago and it's been a long running project, so. So a number of the components for it are actually printed on a 3D printer. And the remainder, mostly things you could get at the hardware store with a few items from Amazon.
Speaker B: It's not very big.
Speaker C: This is sort of just a fun project for me and an educational one. I'm learning an awful lot.
Speaker B: Okay, what size projects and what materials can your CNC machine handle? Very interesting. And did you start with the basics of a mechanical CNC and then adapt it over for automation. Or tell me a bit more, if you wouldn't mind.
Speaker E: Yeah.
Speaker C: In terms of materials, from my reading, the one that I built is probably capable of handling definitely wooden materials and also some thin metal, thin aluminum, maybe something up to, I don't know, I guess maybe a quarter inch or so. And it's the one I have at has a work area that's a little on the small side in the Y axis. I think it maxes out at about 24 inches. And across X, it's a little bit less. It's maybe 19, something like that. And today I'm actually doing a test. I'm going to cut a piece of foam, just a foam sheet, just as a way to test it to see if it's doing what I think it's going to do.

Speaker A: That sounds like an interesting project and probably a lot of it is going through materials, using inexpensive materials to calibrate and such. Speaker A: Well, hopefully that weather is not restricting your movement and it's been a while since you've done a poda, so I don't know, I'm just going to play devil's advocate there. Going to be out doing a PODA soon.
Speaker B: I've been twitching. Yesterday the weather was good enough that if I had made the plans to do it, I probably would have gone and done the poda, but it hadn't been part of my setup for the day. So I've got to keep an eye on it and hopefully next Monday I'll get out.

Speaker B: Very understandable. It seems like something new is added every week and for the most part I just tend to run it on Wednesday since I've gone down the CW rabbit hole. Speaker A: Yeah, I haven't set up anything to be, you know, to handle email or anything. I just need to do some deep dive into it and. And set up some email and. And learn about, you know, the last thing I want to do is game on amateur radio, but I was reading that gaming has been added to it now. I. I think I favor the game of solitaire when it comes to amateur radio.
Speaker B: If they would have chess, that would actually be a cool implementation. Yeah.
Speaker A: And that could be played over. Over time. Yeah, I agree. That might be interesting. Well, very good. Yes. I know you are quite the resource for var ac. Thank you for the offer. And I will definitely extend that over to Jim as well. He's kind of like me. You know, we got into it several. Both got into it like two, three years ago when it first was popular and launched. And, you know, I have not been keeping up with it regularly. And, you know, every time I get in there every couple, two, three months, it's just like, you know, it's a whole new, you know, a lot of changes. So it's kind of hard to follow unless you're really on top of it. But. But it definitely is a developing tool for E comm and just for communications in general. Well, good morning. And your cw. Your CW say you're going down that path. So I know you were tuning up a key last week.
Speaker B: And got the paddle hooked up. I've got it hooked up to V band right now. So getting used to still using the key on the radio, but starting to learn how to use a panel.
Speaker A: Well, I have one sitting in front of me, mocking me as we speak. Definitely an art to it. And I think the plexiglass cover is going to stay on it.
Speaker B: I really come to appreciate VBAN because they always talk about, well, if you learn how to receive, you'll be able to send. And that's not quite the case. There's a certain touch to a straight key and of course, between various straight keys and touch to a paddle as well. And I. So the opportunity to be able to practice the sending portion and get feedback on whether or not what you're sending makes any actual sense, I think is a really, really wonderful gift to the amateur radio community. And it's definitely worth the cost of the adapter.
Speaker A: You know, V band was something that wu6x Dennis had told me about several years ago, and he has used it with others, and I really haven't followed it much since then. What is cost of the adapter? And of course, this is an adapter, basically a USB to. I think it's a 3.5 millimeter, so you can plug any key or paddle into it. But what is the cost of that adapter?
Speaker B: It's $25 and it shows up on your computer as a keyboard. I had to make some adaptations. I'm a big fan of Carabiner on my back because I grew up using a VT100 and VT320 terminal. So my left hand needs my ALT and my control keys in a certain place. And they were very helpful. We sorted out the issue. I got an exception into Carabiner for, for the Mac and it works absolutely fine. But they'll be for that $25 they'll take sends you the adapter and a data cable as well. It's a USB C out, by the way.
Speaker A: Okay, yeah, let me look that, Let me look that up. The USB C adapter. So is that instead of a USB usb, I think that used to be on it. It's now a USB C port and then a cable solution instead of a direct plugin.
Speaker B: Correct. And I've just got it fairly permanently hooked up to my Mac so I can reach for the panel anytime I feel like I want to practice.
Speaker A: So it's been a while since I've talked about VBand, but do you find that there's usually somebody hanging around for a practice qso or do you just go on there and kind of self practice using the tools on there?
Speaker B: What I've been doing is just setting up in the practice channel. They've got a QSO bot now that'll do an automated QSO with you. But for me, the practice channel has been what I wanted to do. It's been great if I had to fine tune key and just, you know, send something repeatedly, obviously something you wouldn't want to do on the air. But I find it's very good for practice and very good for any time you need to tweak a key or a paddle.
Speaker A: Having a discussion with somebody a couple years ago about hooking your paddle or your key up to a scope so you could observe skipping jitter, that sort of thing. And something I never really thought about. But then it was like, of course, you know, any switch, you can measure the chatter, the jitter on it, and it tells you a lot about how you're operating your key. And I thought, what a great way to use a scope.
Speaker B: Oh, that's an absolutely excellent way to use a scope. My son actually asked if he needed, needed to give the oscillator back to me since my original Elmer got it for me from radio shack, what, 45 years ago. And I said, hang on to the key, Hang on to the oscillator and if you said you're interested in cw, and I'm more than happy to.
Speaker A: Very cool. Well, maybe you'll have a new CW partner in the pipeline there. Well, Daniel, good morning to you, and, yeah, thanks for the conversation about V Band. That was something that's kind of had flown off my radar and a nice, nice change. I like that. It's kind of a standalone device. And, you know, with the USB cable, I think it gives a little more flexibility. And one thing I remembered was some people in the past had a little trouble with RFI getting in and messing with their computer. So this might be a great way to isolate that a little bit better as well. All right, Daniel, good morning to you.

He was stationed there, Air Force, and she wanted to fly back to the US For a visit. We had had a death in the family. And she tried to convince her oncologist that, you know, if she was okay. And she said, well, my brother said I could fly. And the oncologist was, who's your brother? And she mentioned my uncle's name. And she. The oncologist paused and she said, well, if your brother says you can go, then you can go. And we hadn't really realized what the name. He was in medicine until that occurrence.
Speaker A: So what is the connection? If you would like to share,
Speaker B: he is. He was head of oncology at Radio Oncology at Mayo Clinic. And when she finally did pass cancer, it came back again very aggressively several years later. And everybody in the community was a. And he said something to us all that I'll never forget. And I think it's always something to keep in mind in dealing with these kind of things. He said, you all got seven years with her. That given the aggressiveness of her cancer, you shouldn't have had. She survived seven years more than she should have. And instead of grumbling about the fact that you. You didn't live, you need to be thankful for the miracle of those additional seven years. And that's something that. That insight from him was something I've never forgotten. And I think when dealing with things that are life threatening, remembering to be grateful for the days that we're given as we deal with it,
Speaker A: Certainly a wonderful way to look at that. We lost Lynn's mom to cancer that metastasized, but it was a type of cancer that could be addressed by some gene therapy. And, well, you know, she was given about five more years of good quality.

Speaker A: Life. You know, definitely there are improvements being made and things that are allowing people to have good quality life for a number of years beyond. So what a great thank you for sharing that because yes, even as a survivor that is something you exit this with or live with is the for the time that you do have. And Lyn of course continues to to live kind of in fear of it when it will return. She said it's not if, it's when. And so we are thankful for, for every day that we have. So definitely thanks for sharing that. Absolutely. Thanks Daniel.
Speaker B: I think the other thing that struck me as he said that as I was watching him talk about he had sit and talked about how she had had a cancer where there's a 95% survival rate and she fell into the 5% that didn't make it and how hard it must have been on him. Being a world renowned expert in a field and not being able to do anything to save your own sister and yet be able to look on the gift of the additional seven years as positive and be the wisdom and calmness from him was something I will absolutely never forget.
Speaker A: You know, and I just look up to people who battle and come out on top well even if they don't. Just the battle that cancer puts people through. And I just often wonder if I would have the same strength that I have seen others exhibit. And yes, it is a choice and we certainly are grateful for that time that we are given.

I have good news for everybody that lives east and maybe to the west, too, because the flip in the pattern, I think, is about to happen. But before we get to that, good morning to Ed. Good morning to Glenn, if he's listening. I heard him earlier. And let's see, I had my procedure yesterday, Brian, and everything came out okay. I had a nice nap. Gosh, the stuff they give you now, it's so pleasant, man. I got in the room, they wheeled me down the hall and I said goodbye to Sarah. And because she was my driver going home, of course, but, and they had me all hooked up to stuff and the, the gal that gives me the, the sleep stuff. And she said, they said, well, you'll have a, you might smell something. And when we start this into you and you might have a funny taste in your mouth. And I did. And the next thing I knew, I was waking up and it was done. I had no memory of even going to sleep. I didn't even, I just had that funny smell and taste. And boom, I was gone. And they found three polyps which the doctor believes is, are benign. He said they didn't look like they would. I guess they could sometimes tell if they look at them, but they want to send them off. Let me take a break. Want to send them off to the lab. And he said, if everything is good, you'll get a letter in the mail that will say, come back in five years. And if you, if there's something that they find that they don't like, they might give me a phone call. So I'm hoping for a letter in the mail. And oh, boy, the solar storm headed for Earth may surprise us. I hope. Stefan Burns. I'll talk about that later, too. But anyway, so everything looks good. They want to look at them. And I hope I get a phone call. I mean, I hope I get a letter in the mail instead of a phone call back to you and then we'll, we'll talk about the weather there. Go ahead.
Speaker A: You know, Mark, I don't particularly enjoy hearing about people's procedures, but I have one thing to say, you know, after that, he should send you a dozen roses in a card.
Speaker C: Well, yeah, he, he, he was good. His name, Dr. Dita. And he was good. Very nice. Very nice. All the people there at the hospital were very nice, very kind. And they said, man, you. You're such a positive person. And I said, well, I, you know, that's the way you got to be. And, you know, if they find something, we go. We go take care of it, and hopefully it'll. It'll be okay. If not, then, hey, we'll see him in five years. And that's where my head's at. So I'm thinking positive. There goes.
Speaker A: Oh, man, you just keep giving me comedy gold. Well, we know where his head was at. Back over to you.
Speaker C: Well, anyway, it was all good. Anyway, Let's talk about the weather. Okay, we'll start with California, and we'll work our way eastward. It looks like the flip in the pattern is about to happen. Not yet this week, but I think by Monday, I think by maybe even late Sunday, there could be some rain in far Northern California. Now, the high pressure area, we're in what we call a rex block pattern. And a rex pattern is one where you have low pressure underneath a major ridge of high pressure, and that's kind of centered in Baja. So that as we come closer to Friday, that ridge that's been with you guys for so long is going to start to break down. It's going to start to move eastward, and that's good for us because eventually what that's going to do is put us on the warm side of the Thor as far as storms go, and it's going to build into the Midwest and East. So by Monday, Daniel, if you're listening, the first number might begin with a 4 on your thermometer rather than a 3, 2, or a 1 and that. And then there could be some warmer numbers behind it. So I would start planning for a POTA on Monday, and if everything works out right, so I think that it's going to start to warm up. And there may be some places like down here that it's going to run into the 60s. But for you guys, there could be some welcome rain and maybe some snow as low pressure moves into the west. And so it might get rid of the fog in the valley. Temperatures may cool off, but there's much needed rain and much needed snow for the west, and there's much needed rain for back here, too. And that may happen, but it may be warm and it may be rain instead of snow. But we still have one more arctic air mass to go through back here, and you've got a couple of days of Fog and low clouds in the valley, but some warming in the afternoon. I think as the days are getting longer now that that fog off a little earlier in the day and that's what's going to warm the valley highs into the 60s even though there's denseness night and morning fog today and tomorrow. Let me take a break. Southern California is going to be in the 80s. But most of the offices, even down to Southern California are agreeing that more active weather and cooler weather and maybe some snow for the Sierras as the polar jet takes up residency in the west now. So just the opposite pattern happens for the east. And so the pressure pattern switches. You get a long wave trough in the west and a long wave ridge in the east. So it looks like the nice sunny weather for California might go away. But you get the added thing of rain and snow and some much needed snow in the higher elevations of the Sierras. And I'll send it back to you and then we'll talk more detail about what's going to happen east of the Rockies there. Go ahead.
Speaker A: Okay, Very good. Well, yeah, I'm just wondering how this will impact our friends in Northern California. It sounds like rain. I'm not sure what the intensity of that is going to be or just a chance of precipitation, but yeah, very good. Not sure how that will affect us in a little farther south, but thank you for that alert there. I think it's time to get the COVID back on the rv. Well, what's happening east of the Mississippi?
Speaker C: Good. You talked long enough that the weather finished. It worked out great. I keep forgetting turn that off. But it worked. Thanks for talking longer. I think it will work its way south. This pattern is going to start unfolding really for you guys. Actually on Friday you'll see a decrease. People will see a decrease in fog and low clouds. There'll be more mixing at the surface. It takes a while for high pressure areas to break down. It takes a while to work out of the pattern. So stuff is going to start further north and eventually as the low carves out a trough along the west coast, that opens the door for storms to work into California and eventually into the Rockies and eventually into the middle part of the nation. But what it does, it centers the colder weather over you guys a little more so that you get good snow in the mountains and and also good rain in the valley because you guys are running behind now. It's been a month of persistent high pressure as it's been a month of persistent low pressure in the mid part of the nation. And to the east. And so those patterns, they're all connected. And so what's going to happen for us is, is after an Arctic front goes through, we're going to get some cold weather tonight. There's a couple of clipper systems. And Daniel, you could get some snow tonight and tomorrow and maybe Friday into Saturday. And then we think Sunday is sort of the transition day. Things start to warm up. In fact, Kansas, places like Kansas, Minnesota, the Dakotas are going to start to warm up. That starts to spread further east as low pressure builds into the west and high pressure starts to build into the Midwest and East. Now what happens though, is by next week, the high kind of flattens a little bit. So that that opens the door for more Gulf moisture to start moving northward. And Pacific moisture, because that transfers eastward. So we start working into what would be like an early spring situation. And we have to take a close look at that, because eventually thunderstorms start developing in Texas and Oklahoma, and eventually they could work eastward and be in the mid south into Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky. And so it melts all of our snow. But then we could get into a situation where a severe weather event could set up. And when things start to warm up and if there's any cold air to the north, it starts to interact with that. So that isn't officially in the cards yet, but you start to look at those parameters. They did say that for Tennessee and parts of the mid south, this could be a wet weather pattern, but with warmer temperatures as all this stuff starts to come out of the Southwest. So there you go. We get back to the normal kind of thing. And one other thing in space weather that I wanted to talk about,

Speaker A: It's 4336 which is 8 times the size of Earth in that sunspot group. And there's a gentleman by the name of Stefan Burns who I forget his website, I'll have to find it. But he is concerned because our planets are in alignment and this sunspot is producing lots of M class and X class flares. And he says he feels that, you know, the last big Carrington event that we had was in 1859. And he's saying that that sunspot continues to grow and it's not releasing the plasma like it should. In fact, it's building. And his concern is within a few hours it'll be directly Earth facing. And he hopes that we don't have an x65 flare event. And he's been popping off a lot of X flares. And while this thing is right close to aimed right at Earth and he's concerned about maybe things look right for perhaps a Carrington event. So he's watching this real closely. So. And if we had a super Carrington event, he says it could throw us back into the stone age with our grids. So. And that would not be good. Back to you there, Brian. WB6BJF.
Speaker B: So on a Carrington event, what is the time of travel between when it first can be observed and the timing of its arrival? I was just going to quickly look that up, but maybe that's something, you

Speaker A: mass ejection and I forget how long that takes. Maybe a day. It's like something like I forget how many kilometers per second that's traveling. But the solar winds would be at top speed. So I'm not, I don't want to quote something, but it would be pretty fast there.

Speaker B: All right. If we trust Google AI, Google AI suggests under modern analogs a similar event would allow 10 to 18 hours after a flare is detected. According to modern simulations, they estimate the event in 1859 arrived 17.6 hours later. So yeah, it looks like we would be able to get a heads up. We would be able to create a big social activity boost, get a lot of ad sales time on the television networks and hopefully give us time to protect electronics. But yeah, I think this is a perfect example of having something that will provide off grid power. Definitely could, you know, like you said, there could be some major, major events. Well, we'll see how this develops. And yeah, I've been noticing a lot of M flares the last couple of Days, very short term duration. But they are, they're hitting us. Thank you very much, Mark.
Speaker A: Yeah, and he believes, he's in Sweden and he believes that that's the reason behind some of our strange Earth weather too. He says solar activity. That's why we've had these big arctic blasts that have gone way south and have affected a lot of people this year. Of course, you got the big warm type thing connected to the weather in the west. And I believe that space weather has a lot to do with Earth weather. I believe that we can say what we want about global warming and I believe that we don't help it. But I do believe that the sun plays a lot into it too, and its energy and let's see. Okay, okay. We just had an active geomagnetic storm. That's the first one I've seen. It's an active geomagnetic. So I don't know what that's going. I know that's going to affect radio conditions. That's the first one of those I've heard. It just came across. Space Weather Live. I've got a new Shari that I want to build a node around. And I'm also looking at this other project that someone forked from All Starlink that is supposed to be optimized for
Speaker B: handling very large loads.
Speaker C: This is kind of a proof of concept. And if it actually holds up, then they want to mainline it into the actual asterisk or the actual ASL project. But right now it's one of these things where there hasn't been enough testing on it yet. There's been a lot of theoretical cool things going on behind the scenes as far as optimizing multi threading, multi core, all that stuff. But it's in a state where installing it is a pretty messy process. So I want to build a whole different system to do some testing with that.
Speaker B: Yeah, I read your, read your text about that. Very interesting that it could, you know, you could actually do some virtual nodes that actually, you know, could be very front end to handle all of the traffic. So very interested in that. Well, glad to hear that you're keeping busy, you know, and I admire your kudos to you. When I am suffering tooth related issues, I pretty much shut down and cry like a baby.

Speaker B: Before I let you go, was just wondering what amount of snow shuts down Gothenburg. How much snow does it take to really kind of shut down the city? And you know the good thing about having a good heavy winter is supposedly it gets rid of all the pests and so you should have a summer free of pest. I used to believe in that. But after a hard winter my neighbors still live there.
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, that's a good thing. And all that crazy bug sort of stuff are going to die, I think in this cold. Yeah, we can take a lot of snow over here. We quite prepared for that. But we had a huge delivery. I think it was 6 or 7 of January. I don't remember how much we got, but it was a huge amount of snow and that killed the whole local traffic over here. And the trams and buses and all that stuff. Stuff was cancelled and a lot of people didn't made it through their workplaces that day. So I think. I don't remember if it was about 20 centimeters. It was a huge delivery anyway. But that closes almost everything down. But that's not usual. We get A lot of snow sometimes, but not so much at the same time. And that was the problem, especially for the buses and the new electric buses. They didn't work in that weather and they were so low, so they couldn't pass the snow. That's a stupid thing. When you live in Sweden, you buy such vehicles that can handle that.

Speaker D: anyway, the trams works quite good in snow over here. But that day they didn't go through the snowy day. So, yeah, a lot of snow we can take. But that day was catastrophe over here. But that's not usual, there's so much of snow. So I think we will survive this delivery on Friday. I hope so.

It was 39 degrees when we kind of got up this morning and I'm not so sure what, what the degree is now, but it's 44 so it has increased. Going to be a beautiful day. Well, we met our newest great granddaughter, Olivia. She is gorgeous, which surprised me. But most babies, everybody goes, oh, they're so cute, they're so beautiful. And most of them aren't. They're pretty, pretty. Oh, I don't even want to say it, but she is just absolutely gorgeous and I never heard a peep from her. We were in the hospital with the mommy, mommy and daddy and we got some alone time with them instead of the hordes of crowds. Everybody was really nice. Her dad was there and he left when just a little bit after we got there. And so they were doing as good as can be expected after 24 hours labor, believe it or not. I don't know how she did it, but she looked tired. But she was well two, so that's a good thing. And nothing like CW going off in the background. Anyway, we had fun with her and Ethan, our grandson, and they were just wonderful and so loving of their new baby. It just warmed the cockles of our hearts, whatever those are. Anyway, did a little bit more work on the Honda CRV from HF or from a VHF perspective. And we got the electric hooked up for the Jesu 510 and discovered that I was nowhere near hooked up with the antenna. I have to put that back on in a different way and it's going to be even better than before, so hopefully I'll get that done. Today, tomorrow my son is coming up to visit us and also I am going to my first acupuncture. Not, not the very first of my life acupuncture, but my first acupuncture of this year for my hip and other extremities. And I always enjoy acupuncture. I'm weird because I love getting. I'm going to go over beat anyway. Release. I hope I didn't blow the buzzer but I've seen other people go way more than four minutes. But it seems like I can't. It must be me. Anyway, that's it. Quick comment for Tony in Tween. Yeah, I bet the electric bus's batteries didn't last as long in the snow. These electric vehicles, when the temperature drops, so does their range and their. What's it especially put the heaters like that to defrost the screen. It kills the range. But, yeah, that's another story. All right, today, where are we? Yes, we've been interested in this mesh core thing. So many people have been into it and I've been sort of. How can I put this? Pressured a little bit to get a mesh core set up. So I ordered a board from China about two weeks ago and it was due to be delivered on the 9th, but it turned up today. So I've got all little bits and pieces. It's marvellous little circuit board, loads of plugs, sockets and wires and things to go into it and no plans, no circuit diagram, no nothing. So I'm gonna have to investigate it. Luckily, I've got a whole gambit of, I think what you call Elmer's people I can go to that will tell me how it works. I have an envelope covered in writing that I've seen from one phone call. So I think I've got enough information to get started. And then it's a question of finding a way around the software. But, hey, how it's. It's all interesting. These things are always new and interesting and as I say, I think the Meshtastic turned out to be a bit of a fail, damp squid, especially in the town I live in, for only three people that got onto it and they could never contact each other, so they also gave up. Whereas this mesh core thing I think is an awful lot better. And there's nets going all over the uk. I speak to guys up in the Pacific Northwest on their nets up there and they're.
Speaker B: They're majorly into.
Speaker A: Into mesh core. So, yes, and it fits in nicely with my 3D printing hobby. So I'm going to put 3D printer box with a holder for a little solar panel and I've got a solar charge controller plus the board, plus the battery. So I'm going to fit it all together into a nice little box and then we'll stick it up and we'll have a mesh core. What do they call this or something? Not a repeater. And we'll see how far we can get. So, yeah, onwards and upwards. This is LES2E0LLV from the Shire.
Speaker B: No, absolutely, yeah. Meshtastic really launched in San Francisco area of the Bay and then came across about a year and a half ago into the Sacramento area, jumped on board and it was actually was gaining good momentum until the two systems were linked up and then they just choked themselves. And so, you know, a flood type system, you know, when you reach a certain amount of popularity, the success of itself makes it pretty useless. And so, yeah, the club has just, has just come in on mesh core and so we have mesh core mounted up at our vault and then I think there's five other active nodes in the area. So yeah, we're starting to build it out and kind of doing some unique things in our area here as far as frequency and that sort of thing to optimized for the best signal to noise ratio and then also making sure that we fit within the guidelines that are put on us by the fcc. So some interesting navigation going on behind the scenes. But Les, very good. Glad to hear that you are on the mesh core build and putting some of the other activities to use. So very good. Well, anything else for the net this morning before I let you go and get down the list.
Speaker A: 2E0LRV. Yeah, no, I think Meshtastic, it's. You need, you need a large collaboration, lots of people, well, lots of hams having a go at it. But I mean, in the uk, Mesh Corps is outside the license band, so we're not, we're not policed by anybody. So it's a nice easy one and we don't. You don't even have to be able to radio ham to do it in the uk. Anybody can do it. I think a lot of interest has come from people who still use CB and stuff like that. So I should be using my nickname rather than my call sign as my identifier on the mesh call. But yeah, all good fun. And as I say, you know, I think Meshtastic was fantastic to start with, a lot of interest. Then it very, very quickly fizzled out when people realised it just didn't work properly. Because in the UK there weren't enough people on this mesh core. It's completely the opposite. Lots of people have come in and I'm very late to the party, so. Oh dear. But anyway, hopefully everybody has a very nice day and as I say, it's probably coming up to quarter to six in the evening here, so perhaps I ought to go and eat something. I'll go and have a graze and have a look at the fridge and the freezer and the cupboards and see what we got that fancy. At least not from the list that they give though it's going to make a friend of mine who is a mach head very happy perhaps. But anyway what I've been up to, which you kind of know from some oblique questions on the surface to you I've been playing with VAR AC lately really kind of jumped into the deep end and ran into an old old problem which is sort of a byword from my previous my old my longest profession which is RTMM RTMFQ rtmfm I'm sorry which means read the mother fletching manual and so I've been trying to just pick and poke to make vary C work and they've been reduced to going back to the manual and finally got things working and set it up for email as a email, what do you call it? Gateway and also for the AI function and I am kind of I think that has questionable value the AI. Let me break it. I know I'm babbling quickly about something that maybe other folks don't know much about or haven't played with it, but there's a feature in the latest version of VAR AC where one can connect to a station that offers AI and as a person you directly to computer the AI station. You can go to an AI engine and query it or have a conversation with a computer or whatever. Irad Deutsch, the author of Bar Academy short video on it and he plays with it while he's out camping supposedly. And how do I build a fire? I don't have any matches, which might be kind of a stretch, but AI tells them but beyond that I'm not real clear on a real practical mechanism for it. But I'm having fun with it playing with it. I'm a little surprised that more people don't. Of course it is just a strictly keyboard to keyboard and a lot of folks are just more into slam bam thank you ma' am types of context. But at any rate, I'd be interested to know how many other folks in the Club play with. And I know you've dabbled in it. Dennis has. I think somebody else has, but that's about all I've heard over to you.
Speaker A: Yeah, I know Burton has it installed and I've heard some other people talking on the repeater, but, you know, honestly, you know, I don't like quick slam, bam, thank you, ma' am contacts, but I am not a typist. But that's about it. The only problem I have is when the connection has a data rate of, oh, you know, over a thousand kilobits per second. I just can't type that fast.

Speaker A: We all love Kathy. Kathy, tell us one reason why did you recommend this book to your dad and better yet, why should we read it? Bud and me
Speaker C: love you too, dad. Just a little background on why I recommended it to him is just being a young man and independent as he was, I think he will relate to these two young men. It was a short little snippet that caught my eye that someone had posted and it starts with the fact that my husband and I were watching extracted and a 20 year old couldn't handle staying overnight 24 hours in the wilderness, which I'm not in his shoes. But he just doesn't come from that kind of background apparently because he was done after 24 hours and the prize winnings was $250,000. So interesting that he was not able to continue beyond that point. But so we watched that the other night and then the next morning I saw this story and it was about a five year old and a nine year old who hopped on their horse. The little five year old had to use something to get up onto the horse, but they rode from Oklahoma to Arizona, I believe, and horseback and then back and then they did two other trips after that. So adventurous. I just think it was interesting and it was really sweet because the father gave him a Bible and asked them to say their prayers and not to cross rivers they couldn't see the bottom of and sent them on their way happily. It's just fascinating to me.
Speaker A: Yeah, quite interesting how we turned into, you know, the kid's tough, he's Going to make it to, you know, you can't go out, you know, you can't go into the streets unless you're wearing your elbow pads, helmets and mouth guard. Yes, indeed. I watched a very interesting video the other day on Daisy, the BB gun maker and how, you know, during the 20, the 30s and 40s, you know, the BB gun was that rite of passage for a young boy and many young girls as well, but they focused on that was kind of the Red Rider, tough kid, you know, learning, responsibility and the effects of, you know, you can't shoot your eye out to. Speaker A: I see you're running EchoLink. So do you happen to have the All Star on your. On your device? Because All Star does have a tool that shows active nodes. That's a great way to find different nets and different things that are happening have that time.
Speaker D: No, I'm on an iPhone, so, yeah, I'm using EchoLink, Brian, as I'm in my happy place, Sarasota, Florida, where it's finally warmed up again. But I didn't know I could load an All Star app to one of my devices. So on the way back from Home Depot right now, maybe I'll go take a look, see what I can dig up. Thanks for the help.

Speaker E: Why, thank you, Patrick. Yeah, so I'm doing pretty good, but I'm also using the repeater phone to listen to the coffee Coffee Net. But if you use your browser on your phone, you'll see the All Star Net and it will list the various talk groups and the time and what day they function. And then once again, you can use the repeater phone to connect to those nets if you're away from your radio. Back to you.
Speaker D: Okay, Terry, good idea. I'll actually just grab my iPad. It's a lot easier to see and I'll just make notes or bookmark it on my radio repeater phone app. Really what I was trying to find was local repeaters that have activity and when they have activity so that I could actually use my HT when I'm out and about in Sarasota because there are a couple good repeaters here.
Speaker E: And that is a very good idea and it is easy to do. But if you're going to use your HT and try and connect to various repeaters, are you using like a PI star or some sort of node to go along with that?
Speaker F: No,

Speaker D: my feeders that work with my in my local area.

Speaker E: So yeah, take a look at the All Starnet online using your browser and then it should list the local groups that you should be able to reach. K06CG clear.
Speaker A: You know, Patrick, as far as activity in your local area, I'd probably, you know, take a look, see what amateur radio clubs are active in that area. And that probably would be a place that I would start if I was trying to find where activity is. Very surprising that an area as flat as Sarasota and as many people live in Sarasota that you're not hearing much activity on your radio.
