Well, in fact I do know where it is and I think I spoke to you before. Maybe it was last week or the week before maybe. But any event it may have been after the net on that particular day. I don't know. But I know I spoke to you before because you know, man, you don't get a whole lot of radio traffic from there and yeah, you got a great location there. I think I remember telling you about possibly trying the system 36 Carla repeater on 2 meters too because that gets way out there. But maybe you don't like repeaters. I don't know. Anyway, I'm just out here in Chico on the valley floor so about 200ft I guess so that's why you got a good signal. I'll take a standby. Maybe there's someone else who wants to talk to you and you know, give you a report from where they are. This is KN6MGK.

Well, nothing heard there. I don't know if you're ever up early in the morning, but there's some traffic out here. I think maybe that was when I talked to you. Actually, I'm thinking about it, but some guys usually talking out here, I don't know, six, seven in the morning, eight o' clock in the morning, right in that time frame, you know, they happen to also be on 80 meters on HF, you know, but then they, since they're halfway local, you know, they talk out here from Magalia a lot. There's other traffic out here, sporadically, but it's nothing like it used to be.

Yeah, yeah, the website's carlaradio.net but yeah, frequency is 146115. 146115. The tone is 1 2, 3, positive offset. Anyway, and it's a linked system. So if you use a different tone in the same frequency, then you get part of the link system, you link it all together with over 30 repeaters, plus some all star stuff going on there. But that's most of California and parts of Nevada.

Yeah, most of us, a lot of us know him. That's Ken. He used to live around Fort Jones. And anyway, KNE is the last of his call sign. I forget the first. I'm good on last parts of call signs, but not very good on the first parts. But anyway, he hangs out on the CARLA system for sure. So link side obviously, because he comes in through All Star. But yeah, so in a sense I do All Star because. Because I'm on CARLA a lot and also because there's a repeater over here, the 147105W6GRC. Friends of mine own that and that's all All Star. And they play the Coffee Break net in the mornings between 7:30 and 10. I think that's right. Anyway, so I've got a lot of traffic on that in the mornings, every morning. Actually I do have an All Star node also. And it really isn't above your head if you do that. I mean All Star node you can just buy them already configured. But yeah, it costs money obviously, versus building one. Building one takes some effort. But if you order one already set up, it would come already with your call sign in it. You can operate it with. With a bofang radio if you want to anyway. And the other thing you need is an Internet service, obviously. So that's how it works. Right. So can travel through the Internet to get to its destination. So yeah, you have to have a decent Internet service, whatever it may be, even Starlink.

Yeah, hey, if I was doing it again, I'd buy Clear Nub for sure. But yeah, unfortunately it cost you more money, you know, and you end up, you know, getting the better one. I think there's several different options. But anyway, you've already. When you order, you can give them your information, your call sign, whatever, you know, and they put it in. Then I'll say. Then I'll agree with you. Yeah, that's pretty much plug and play. Yeah, there's kind of like learning computer program or something in a sense of like the dashboard. If you wanted to do, to change what, you know, what node that you're hooked to and things like this and look at the bubble chart and stuff like that. In that case, yeah, you use your, like a dashboard on a. On like a laptop or desktop to view that so that you can change. So you can direct it to different places like rooms or node numbers, essentially. Like the Carla system, the Las Vegas system, anywhere around the world you can plug it into that has. Carla. Sorry, that has All Star. And you can be talking on their repeater systems. So yeah, there is a little bit of a learning curve there. But it's not like you have to learn the Linux terminal and, and all the different codes and commands and things like that. No, that would be expert class. So maybe it's a little bit above novice, but I don't think it's too terrible. The worst it gets is figuring out your Internet stuff. Sometimes they don't like to communicate well if you don't maybe open up the ports or something like that, have port forwarding, if you've heard of that, on your Internet router. So that's where some difficulty might come in. But that depends. Some people can handle that because they're good at networking back to you.

Okay. Yeah. KN6MGK. Well, now, you touched on a subject about. You said you get more traffic than you do on hf. Well, I don't know. I can get lots of traffic on hf. So it just depends on where you're at, what time of day and what kind of antenna you have. So we could talk about that a little bit if you want to.

Well, I also enjoy portable ops too. So I go out portable quite a bit. Although I've been taking a little bit of a break from that here recently. I've worked with several different kinds of antennas and I do have a Palomar off center fed right now, although I've cut it down, you know, experimenting with it. Nevertheless, they can be a bit noisier. It's pretty hard to beat a regular just center fed dipole. By the way, a lot of things are or what they call a fan dipole, which is same thing, center fed, but you can hook other wires to it at different lengths to pull in different bands. Right. So that would be nice. But yeah, no, 7300 is a great radio to start with and to utilize and all the filtering and stuff will make it quieter. I'd be curious on your comment because I have a two friends that have those. If you're using any radials, if you're not using radials, then that's what's compromising it. Now I know you can that one. You can, you know, you can use it without radials, but they work better with radials and they do sell a radial kit or you can probably build your own too.

Well, yes they can. Yep. But I've always gotten a couple of years out of mine pretty easily. And if you look for something the last, you know, 10 years out in California with all the heat and cold and everything else going on, then you know, you have to be real, you know, you have to think about using maybe just like a cold. They call it a cold drawn, you know, copper wire that's not stranded. You know, those have a lot more strength to them but you know that's getting up. A lot of times I'm using stuff that I just find I make my own. It's not a dipole is pretty easy actually. So you can buy the little center connectors even from hand radio outlet that are like a one to one balance that have the two posts on it where you just put your wire on it and you just cut your own wire. So anyway. But yeah, so you probably want to use like say 14 gauge or something like that, you know, wire so it's a little stronger even stranded insulated would work like that thnn wire for houses, you know. Or how about marine, marine grade wire if you have to order some or whatever. But that would get strong, be strong stuff. And also, you know, maybe UV protectant but give you some ideas there. What you do is you don't try to pull it super tight. You snug it up maybe, but a little droop is okay. You know, that way there. If you have it in between trees and they move back and forth well then it just moves up and down a little bit and stuff. Now some people get tricky. I'll be putting my pulleys on them and counterweights on the ends and things like that. But one of the main things of a dipole I think if you're worried about strength a bit is like right now, right now I have mine just two points pulled together so it does droop in the center. But it's to put a third point, one that holds the center up or in the case of your off center fed, the short section, you know where that balance is right there on off center fed. That's probably a 4 to 1 balance. So you want to support that with, with something too. So typically I think palomars are 1/3 2/3. So. So you know, you might put the long section kind of figure that that's your radiating section and the short section is a reflecting section. So depending on you set it up a dipole east, west or north south is how you get your, your propagation. So now vertical is one by which you know it's better for a low takeoff angle or. You said the word dx. Well, so if you go on early, like say 6 in the morning, maybe even a little earlier. I mean, the Asian countries are out there big time on 40 meters. I've been getting them just about every morning, you know, about six in the morning, about 40 meters. And you'd get them, I would think, on that antenna. Back to you.

Well if it's a dipole, I would say yes because like if mine, mine is east west and I have the longer section more to the west and the shorter section to the east. Now I'm going to switch mine around. I do this because I want to change my, my contacts some. I'm trying to get more DX countries. I'm at 85 countries right now. I'd like to get to 100 by the end of the year. It gets more difficult as you get higher. I got friends that got 200 countries. Well anyway, I'm not looking to do that baby steps here. But anyway, so being that it's that way, it's east west, my takeoff angles have higher gain north south because the propagation of a dipole, I don't care if it's off center fed or whatever his broadside to its, to its position like that. So kind of figure it like it's a donut going down the whole length of it, right. So your gain is going to come off of, off of that in the north south way. And mine's not perfect or any such. But I know I get South America countries way easier than I get stuff like over and say China, China is a little tougher. Although I've gotten it, you know, with other digital modes. I do FT8 and I get that one and I also get Asiatic Russia on that same antenna on 40 meters but you know, it's FT8. So also can do some CW too and get these Asian countries but you know, that's what can pierce through the noise and so forth. But I am kind of curious, should ask you if you have solar or anything nearby that you think might be causing that noise. And since you're talking about noise on hf, what is your noise level? So what is your. If you're not keyed up, you're just listening on a frequency on say 20 meters. Where does the meter hang out, hang out say around four or five or you know, or where does it hang out in that area? Or is it way up there? 7 8, you know, because obviously that if your noise level is 7 8, then you can't hear anybody below that back to you.

Well, I'm sitting here looking at two HF rigs and I've got a couple of computers here, Raspberry PI. It's pretty common, you know, pretty common for that. I wonder what you use them for. A power supply. Like I'm running off of a 12 volt battery right now and I do have a little off grid, couple hundred watts feeding, feeding it, you know, on a solar. So but anyway, anytime you can run off of direct current, you know, 12 volts or thereabouts, you know, 13.8 I guess is good. That's kind of tangent to what you're talking about, what I've seen. Cause the most RF issues in HF at least are those wall warts. Any wall warts, you've got LED lighting. So wall warts being like, you know, if you're, I don't know, trying to think of like if you have a laptop computer and you're plugged in, maybe that could be an issue. You know, mine runs off of dc, you know what usb, C pd. A lot of the new laptops are running off of that anyway. Again, I have a power strip that my 12 volt battery feeds and so I can hook up many devices to that that are all run off of like my USB C PD for instance, that operates my laptop, whatever. But one thing you can do on computers and cables and things is put little ferrite beads on them if you're having any issues with RF getting into the computer. And that does happen because when you start going 100 watts on HF, you know, it can cause my mouth to wig out on me and stuff like that. So got to put the ferrite beads on my mouse. Of course some people are using fancy Bluetooth these days and that makes a difference. So anyway. But solar can definitely cause RF issues. And it doesn't have to be just the panels. A lot of times it'd be the little inverters, microinverters or any charge controllers, anything like that that might be nearby that could cause RF issues. And the way you know is if you're having, maybe you have a way of disconnecting it all. And so you can see if you're getting a whole bunch of noise and you go out and disconnect it all, then the noise goes away. Then that's obviously where it is. At a friend's house, we went through a circuit. He has solar. And it didn't end up being his soil pills, it ended up being he had a fan inside of his garage. So we were just, we went through his whole circuit panel. And we turned off one circuit one at a time until we isolated which circuit was causing the problem. Then we looked at what was on that circuit. It ended up being a fan inside of his garage. So he disconnected that fan and that was the end of it until replace it with a better grade fan. You know, stuff like that. So anyway, it can be a lot of things that cause a lot of noise. KN6MGK.

Well, I for one hope that they are listening and you know, more traffic is good and we're leaving plenty of break for them to get in if they want to. So anyway, nothing wrong with that. The other thing that's good and I gotta say that I'm not the best at this, but there's a nice ground. Put a nice ground in your shack system and if you have properly grounded system there, it helps with noise too. But yeah, the vertical verticals could be a lot noisier than a dipole. Also, if you have plenty of space, think about some sort of a loop antenna. Doesn't have to be perfect, you know, four poles up somewhere or four trees somewhere and you run wires around maybe a four to one balance somewhere and come down to your shack with a feed line. You know, if you can get it up 30ft or something like that, that'd be great. 40 would be better, you know. But yeah, if you can get like a. Oh, I think it's about a 240 foot piece of wire in a loop situation, you know, you can probably get, you know, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6, all on the same wire. So it's pretty fun. And they're a lot quieter. So anyway, just a thought out there for you. You can investigate a full wave loop antenna, lots of configurations for them, delta loops, so on. But anyway, HF is fun and yes, it's all going to take a little bit of time learning. So I'm still learning too, a little bit every day. I think it's kilo. 9 kad kilo nov 6 might golf kilo. Speaker A: And what kind of brings it around to this year is that we have Ham Fest, which is going to be on March 28th. And I remember meeting you for the first time. I was at a booth there taking photos last year, and you were picking up a bunch of old radios there, and I. I thought, that must be Darren.
Speaker B: Yeah, you know, I'm still looking for them. A few of them still don't sell. They sat for a minute, actually. I couldn't figure out why they wouldn't work. I don't have the skills, and I don't know which thing in there that'll burn me up when I touch it. Anyways, I gave it to my neighbor because he has the skills with tube radios, ones that don't work. And he says there's a trick to fix one of those tubes when it has static. There's just one tube. You just gotta clean it up a little bit, test it, and then get a new one and replace it and your radio comes back on. But I've just been baffled when I. When I do pick up these radios and plug them in and I'm like, holy smokes, this thing's working. It's crazy. It's just weird. It's really cool. Yeah. Going out looking for records still and all that good stuff. That's all I'm doing. And, yeah, it's supposed to be at two minutes, so I guess I went over that quota. Speaker E: Good morning, Tom and annette. This is KN6WQU. Notice. Just staying off and actually more than I wanted to. So my nephew, my sister's son gave me a call yesterday and said, I'm Danny. I'm so Danny, I don't know what's going on with my car. Doesn't want to run. I'm like, okay. So I'm like. He said something about, oh, all you got to do is just program the crank sensor. I'm like, that's not how it works. If it doesn't start, it's definitely not a crank sensor, because crank sensor, it'll still run. It'll just misfire or something. I mean, some cars, you have to program it, but not the news on. So I went over there and tried to figure this thing out. It was cranking and cranking and cranking. It didn't get anything to do anything. And so I broke up the old oscilloscope and. Well, not old, it's actually new, still $3,000 or so, I think expensive. And I hooked it up to it and we found that one of the bank camshaft sensors was the wrong one. So he doesn't remember replacing it or he did it in paste or some type of different mood using. The point is this car is running now, so it's all good. So today, supposed to be a day off, but that's not going to happen because I made. Made some appointments for tomorrow, which was a big no no for me. So I got to do two jobs today and then we're going to talk the pay bowling and then all of the other fun stuff. Let me let it drop. I got a quick update regarding the air conditioning system and then I'll get out here. Thanks, Tom. All right. So, man, we've been on tech support calls I think six times. I believe we are now in. We are now in a group chat with people there. So we can just get on the messenger and send messages and then get back to us right away. So no more calling through the automated system, which is, I guess, kind of nice. I mean, I don't know what that means. So my AT guy was like saying, you know, I think there's something wrong with the control board or something like that. So they're going to send out a new control board. So I got confirmation that was going through the mail yesterday. So it should be here in the next couple days. We're going to try to slam that thing in there and hopefully we have heat if Ms. Saga is finally over. So we'll have to see how it goes. Thanks for letting me tap on this.

Speaker E: Yeah. So the. What I mean by ac, I mean by mini split. What I mean by that, I mean a heat pump system. So therefore, if the Freon is not a flowing, we're not getting any heat or cold for that matter. Although in my situation, cold is indeed working perfectly, but heat is not. Although it uses Freon in reverse, it's Called the heat pump system. And then basically it. That's how it. So it retracts the heat from outside and brings it inside. It's new. Well, it's not really new, but they got this new inverter pump, you know, stuff that makes it so much easier. Easier for everybody. But anyway, this is supposed to be quick in and out and. Speaker B: You know, I've worked. I know, I know. I see other people get parties like when they went away, got a better job. Even when they were let go, they'd still have a party for them. Me, it was kind of like, okay, talk to you later.
Speaker A: Well, you know, there are a couple of people, there are a few people there that I, that I hope I maintain some sort of contact with because I have enjoyed working with them over the years, just not a huge amount. And you know, I actually told, went down to our election department and told them that if they needed somebody to work the elections that they could call me. And you know, that would give me an opportunity to see people again, just not terribly often.
Speaker B: Well, better than, you know, laying around watching some kind of rerun.
Speaker A: They don't have that much anymore, do they? Not like they used to do on television in the afternoons on the independent stations they'd have reruns galore. Actually, it's been a long time since I've seen a rerun of I Love Lucy and that used to be one of the staples.
Speaker B: Well, I'm a proponent of getting your television out of the air rather than paying. Even though I do have the cable Atom 12 dragnet emergency. There's some detective shows, you know, Matlock and Columbo, but the commercials are all for old people. If you're old and it ails you, hey, there's a Commercial for it.
Speaker A: Oh, yes, that's very true. Say, how about Iron Sight? Do you remember Ironside? I haven't seen that one. I do remember.
Speaker B: I also remember Rockford. Rockfish, yeah,
Speaker A: Rockford was a good shell. But I always enjoyed Ironside. I guess I liked him because he was kind of a gruff, you know, no nonsense guy. Didn't take guff from much of anybody and gave a lot of it out.
Speaker B: Are you overweight?
Speaker A: Oh, to some degree. I think you'd have to say so, yes. Although I've got this new medicine. One of the side effects is it, it suppresses your, your hunger. And so I found within the last four months I've lost like £15.
Speaker B: And you still feel okay?
Speaker A: I do, I do, yeah. Yeah. I don't exactly know what the mechanism is, it's just. And I find that, you know, I generally. Well, you and me both came from the generation to clean your plate, eat everything that's on there. Otherwise it's, you know, it's a sin to waste food and I find myself looking for the smaller portions and actually leaving food on my plate after a while. And I was like, you know what, you're full. You're feel full, don't force it.
Speaker B: Depression and World War II, you know, all that rationing. My dad used to try to make us eat Beef Town. I refused. I'll eat some carrots instead. Thank you, dad.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. And up until just recently, I've kind of left the senior selections on the menu go by, but now I'm looking for them because I know that there's less food that they give you and it costs less too. So, you know, side benefit.
Speaker B: Well, I couldn't sum up getting old for you. Everything hurts, you know. You think I'm going to eat this big meal? No, you're not. Your stomach's going to feel full real quick and then, yep, the next day. And then your bones hurt and then you can't get along with. Yell at you.
Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, I haven't quite gotten to the point where when I wake up my bones hurt. But, you know, there have been those days though.
Speaker B: You know, in our society, nobody ever says anything about how to die, how to, you know, live gracefully. Elderly. Oh, graceful and elderly. Now, so those two words don't go together. A lot of issues and you really feel alone. You know, you might have a partner or, you know, whatever, but it's something you have to deal with by yourself.

Yeah. All nine of these. He's got three just like the ones I got in the shop. And then he's got the next size, smaller. And they all have the second pigtail coming out of the transformer box. The three wires, real small, like 14 or 16 gauge. Yes.

He. He doesn't think that he needs to run them full blast unless he's out there working on something. So he just wants to be able to dim them back. I. I don't care. But, you know, heck, that's nine more wires, and the. And the top three are, like, 22ft in the air. The ones that. The six that run down both sides of the shop, three on each side, just like three on the ceiling, are closer to the ground, maybe 14ft or 12ft, something like that. But, yeah, I wish he would have came up with this idea when I was wiring all the lights to start with, because it would have been easy to run that second wire. So I'm wondering what the. What's the potentiometer side of the. It's not just a potentiometer. It has to be done inside the light. That's why they add that piglet tail, because, you know, an LED has a gate voltage when it's on, and then anything less than that, it's off.

Speaker A: Yeah, well, I'll talk to him this morning about that. He said he was gonna go get everything. I don't think it'd be that easy. I did mount the ream remastat the one I got from you on the top of the air box. And I wired it both ways just so I could see if there was a speed increase, you know, to the. The black side wire or the white side wire.
Speaker B: No difference. They prefer to be on the black wire. Check. No big deal. I didn't solder or do anything to it. I just twisted it together.

Speaker E: radio, there's a firmware update and the app changes and it's very cool. It has all of the satellite radio area updated and keeps track of all of the satellites based on your location, what's overhead and when you click on the satellite, you can actually communicate directly with the satellite.
Speaker F: And I believe it adjusts

Speaker E: location of the satellite too in frequency on that. I think that's what Mike was referencing back there on his quick in and out without a condom.

Both Doug and I W2VX myself have a BTEC handheld radio that uses the same software. It uses the Vero software there. I think Vero even makes a version of that. And yeah, it does have that. If you look go on the the app that's on your phone and you can get into the satellite mode. And yeah, you click on the iss, it does populate the frequencies, both the up and down frequency in the radio as well as it tracks it as it's going across using the Doppler effect for the frequency. So, yeah, it is very cool. That's been in the handheld one for

Speaker C: I remember we were playing with that before, Doug and I. So, yeah, it's a cool, cool thing. And the software on that thing is. Is pretty good.

Speaker C: Except Dave Q6DCL, he had the Vero radio and he had problems because he was using. Using an Android app and for some reason he couldn't get the tones and stuff to get turned off on that. Speaker D: It's an Aloha Friday so I woke up late unfortunately, so I'm not going to get as much work done early in the morning. I only have one appointment today and then it will be time to clean up the rest of the week and get back to some projects. I've got about three quarters of my little strip hat rack things that go on the wall installed and I'm not sure I have room for the last one. I might have to do something there. Clear out one end of the closet. Little better, but they're going in the open. No door closet. This part of my office above my work table. I've got close to 200 caps I think so I can get them, get them all up with that many racks, but that's about it for the day. Well, yeah, some radio stuff. I'm gonna maybe do another setup of the mast now that I have more of the all the parts to it. Didn't have a ground state to hold it in place before the new carbon fiber mast, the 33H and some other things. Sorting through my new kit, I have to find out what bits and pieces go in both kits and maybe those will go in a plastic box depending on which one I want to take. I can dump that in there. So getting my, my airline kit ready and that way we can go do a little longer distance travel hopefully this year and maybe set up on the beach on Kauai. We'll see. And that'll be a really good Ola ha Friday if I do that.
Speaker G: I think that's a nice visual there.
Speaker C: I mean you had mentioned that before about on the beach on Kauai and that would be a nice place to be able to set up there with a Mai Tai and a lounge chair and your radio and make some contacts. I think that's a great thing to do. A nice way to relax.
Speaker D: Yeah. Although it's not enforced. It's probably no drinking on the beaches there. But you can always make the lemon lime Gatorade margarita. And that looks. That looks just like a Gatorade, which everybody needs when they're out on the beach. A little salt in there and shake it up good. Maybe a little extra lime juice, a little extra sugar, but, yeah, it looks good. Maybe roll margarita mix inside the Gatorade bottle. We'll try that.
Speaker C: Maybe.
Speaker D: And margarita's a little tougher. We might, at our better place, we might have a pog tub, which is the pog drink, with one fifth of a gallon of rum mixed in the gallon container and a little bit of dark rum, some Wailer's black rubber.

Speaker C: Good to hear you. Good morning everyone else on the net. Yes, we've got significant storm coming in next week. Looking at the weather forecast, I think Mark will probably be on later and talk about it, but they're talking about significant amounts of rain and snow and that's a good thing. We need to snow. We definitely need to build up the largest reservoir we have in the state and that's the Sierra snowpack.
Speaker A: Yeah, it's kind of looking forward to that, at least getting the snow up there because we definitely need it. I know when you were up to Reno there, you were reporting on just very thin amount of snow at the very, very peaks here. So yeah, hopefully we'll get a good report from Mark and we'll have a good, a good snow next week as well as some rain here in the valley.
Speaker C: Yeah, I think if the forecast holds up, I think we're going to have almost 10, 10 days of straight rain and 10 days of snow. So that's good. That's not a bad thing. That's a good thing. I heard you talking to Darren.
Speaker A: I didn't hear the whole conversation.
Speaker C: But you were talking about some of the radios that he runs into when he's out looking for records. It sounds like those might be more antique. You know, the old radios, tube radios, AM radios, antique radios. But I was wondering if Darren's still out there, he must run across used hi fi equipment from the 60s and 70s as well.
Speaker A: Yeah, I gave a break there in case Darren was around. Darren, WW6 def. Are you still on?
Speaker C: Yeah. No, no.
Speaker A: No word from Darren? Yeah, I'm not quite sure. I know that he does look at the, the old, the old tube radios, you know, those things. That's how I met him when he was at the hemp fest last year. But yeah, he does collect the old, the old tube AM radios. And resells those things. So they are. They're quite popular, I guess.
Speaker C: They are. I used to repair those, restore those. I got rid of my collection of those. I got rid of all my tube equipment. I decided it was time to go all solid state. But there is a shop in Grass Valley for people that might be visiting Grass Valley. They might want to check out. If you're interested in stereo equipment from the 60s and 70s, the stuff that you and I used to repair in our youth. It's called the clock tower records and it's a great record store as well. In fact, I told Aaron to go up there and check that out because they got a huge collection of records as well as fantastic collection of old posters from concerts out of the 60s and 70s on the walls. It's just fun going there and relive your youth, I guess. And look at all that stuff they have in there. But in the back they have a confinement area where people can bring in their old turntables, stereo gear. They used to do some repairs in there. I don't know if they have anybody that really is qualified to repair that equipment anymore. But they do take equipment on consignment. And a few weeks ago when I was in there, they had a couple really nice Marantz stereos that, you know, they're solid state. They're the Marantz equipment. Oh, from the early 70s. Really nice units. They appeared to be in good shape. I couldn't operate them, I couldn't actually test them. But their prices were pretty reasonable too. That stuff tends to go for a pretty good price these days.
Speaker A: Who would. Who would have known why? I'm sure. Yeah, a lot of that stuff is just kind of donated and maybe even trashed because a lot of people don't know. There's some value to that.
Speaker C: But interesting.
Speaker A: Yeah, so nice to hear that. There is a Clock tower records in Grass Valley that's dealing with that stuff. You kind of wonder. They must have enough business to keep going because that seem like that would be a very niche market.
Speaker C: It's a niche market, but they've made it work. Every time I've gone in there on the weekend or during the week. They've had a steady stream of people, steady traffic going in there. If you're looking for a record. I know Darren's doing the same thing with his business. They know the records, they know when they were produced. They know the condition. Same thing with the stereo equipment. They actually are selling some brand new records because records are coming back to a certain degree and they also sell a lot of used CDs if people are interested in CDs instead of records. Interesting. You probably remember the dishwasher system. I think the brand name was actually dishwasher, where you had the little brush and you had the fluid and you'd put it on the record and you'd scrub the record before you'd actually play it. That's still manufactured. They actually have brand new dishwasher systems in there for sale.
Speaker A: Well, that's interesting. Yeah, I remember they used to sell a lot of different products and stuff for cleaning up your records and doing all that stuff. And even some people recommend soap and water, but not sure that's the best thing, especially when you might get it on the label. But. Yeah, I remember going into a Barnes and Noble bookstore a couple weeks ago and they were selling brand new records there and I was looking at the price and the price is crazy. It's like $30 for a piece of vinyl. Things that I used to. Used to buy for maybe 99 cents in the discount bin. Walgreens and maybe the actual wrecks themselves were around $5. So it's. Yeah, things have definitely increased. I guess there's a demand for it, though.
Speaker C: There definitely is a demand. There still are people out there. There's still a controversy over the sound difference between digital and vinyl analog. There's people that swear they tell a difference in the sound. There is a difference in the sound, but is it better? I don't know. I would argue it might not be better, but the same thing with a vacuum tube amp versus a transistor amp. You know, I've known a lot of audiophiles that swear that they can tell the difference in sound. And it may be they like the sound that vacuum tubes do over the transistors. But that argument, I don't always amused me to certain extent because you get to a point where, you know, total harmonic distortion of.001. I don't think the human ear is going to pick out the difference in that. Anyway, I'm going to let you move on.
Speaker A: I just.
Speaker C: The conversation you have with Darren kind of triggered those thoughts in my mind because I have a soft spot for audio equipment because I used to sell it and I used to repair it, so got fond memories of that. Speaker D: Well, Good morning Tom. KB6SSN Tom here and good morning to the net. Beautiful blue skies this morning was about 39 degrees when I woke up this morning. I woke up early and then I went back to bed. I didn't have anything to do, so I slept in till about seven and it was 39 when I woke up then. So it's a little bit chilly, but yeah, not bad at all. It's a beautiful go do it day today. And I think today's Friday because you're on the air. So we'll assume it's a Friday and we'll run with that. Larry and I have been having an awful lot of fun with the radios out at his place out there. And we've been posting videos of the radios up on YouTube. We decided to include ourselves in a video, not just the radios. And the darn thing has almost gone viral on us. We've got thousands of hits off a video of just a couple of clowns standing around pointing at a speaker. So if that sells on YouTube, then anything will sell on YouTube. If you completely waste three minutes of your life. Go check it out at Confederates on one. And yes, I am looking very much forward to the ham fest coming up in March down in Loomis. I have a proposition for you folks out there that will be bringing equipment to the ham fest. You bring interesting stuff and I'll bring money. We'll make a deal.
Speaker C: KB6SSN. Okay, very good there, Tom. Yeah. WB6SSN or KB6SSN and then 6H. Yeah, very good. Well, I did check out your video on your, I guess your channel on YouTube. And yeah, it's interesting. It's like you said, it's not really a polished type of thing, but it does have some attraction to it. And I thought it was basically when I was going there, looking at, I think the first couple videos you had there, it was interesting. I mean, basically you turn the radio on and you're hearing different contacts and stuff. And I think that maybe have an appeal to people that like to listen to radios. Maybe they don't have a radio of their own and be able to actually have something that's kind of uninterrupted and stuff. So, yeah, I definitely could see the appeal to that. And looking at some of the older radios, they're doing pretty good, you know, video job there too, just showing the different radios and stuff. I guess my only complaint would be when I watched the first one, and that was. That was pretty good. The second one, you guys kind of changed it to the. The vertical format, which is more of the tick tock Format, I guess. And that's not so good there for showing radios, especially when you're on show lots of it and stuff, instead of having to pan the camera around. So that would be my only criticism, but otherwise I thought it was pretty good.
Speaker D: Well, interestingly enough, Tom, I have the same criticism of the same videos. Well, it. It initially started because I filmed or filmed. I videoed the entire thing. It shows how old we are filmed. Anyway, I videoed the entire thing in landscape mode so I could get in the entire stretch of equipment that was out on the table. And then when I uploaded it, it uploaded itself as a short, which does it in portrait mode, which cropped off 80% of the landscape mode on either side of the picture. So it kind of looks like those first few videos. It looks like you're looking at the radios through a keyhole. To compensate for that, I put together a compilation video that was of all of the landscape videos into a long regular video and posted that. So you can see that without the keyhole effect and then every video moving forward from there. Yes, we have videoed in the portrait mode because that's the way that the YouTube likes it, effectively for their shorts. They like it in portrait mode. So the shorts appear to get a lot more hits than the videos do, the longer videos. So we did learn, as we're going along, we found out that if we post a radio just doing its thing, we get somewhere between 500 and 1,000 hits. And that's pretty good, I think, considering that my last YouTube video was a family video that got nine hits. So there you go. When we added Larry to the equation, that went up from about a thousand to two thousand hits. Larry sitting there working on the radios or talking on the radios, that kind of thing. When we added both of us and added lab coats. Yeah, now we've got 4,000 hits and growing on the last video. So we're learning as we're going along here. And it's the strangest things that seem to make a difference. So gay lab coats, any case, if any of this interests you, if you have some time to kiss until it's on one on YouTube that is just a compilation of really bad videos or really great radios. The radios are the stars. And if you're interested in that kind of thing, go check it out. We don't make any money off of this. These are not monetized. There's no remunerations taking place here. We just use this for fun. It's part of our. One of the facets of the hobby that we enjoy. So we're, we're working that angle. So in any case, yeah, I don't know, we went with lab coats. We may have to go with safety glasses and hair nets next. I'm not sure.
Speaker C: Okay, Tom, just kind of FYI, your audio there towards the end got almost down to non existent. I had to pull the, the speaker up to my ear to actually hear from it. So I'm not sure what's going on on your side there, but your audio just kind of slowly faded down to almost, almost nothing and almost like a whisper. But I did get the information there, yeah, using lab coats. So, you know, maybe what you need to do going forward there is blow things up. I think, you know, you mentioned about, you know, adding yourself and adding Larry and adding lab coats. You know, each thing kind of increased your number of views. Maybe you blow things up, you know, maybe after, you know, the radios, you know, you know, go ahead and then, you know, kind of expectantly you're just going to blow them up and then that might bring you all the views you want there. But anyway, yeah, and it's interesting that the YouTube TV or YouTube wants to do the thing, the shorts as a portrait that maybe that's kind of the, the tick tock influence on that stuff stuff there. But yeah, I didn't realize that that

Speaker D: Every time we add something now, the blowing up the radios, that's not going to happen. You know, there are a lot of YouTube channels I watch. One of them is a crazy guy named Scott from Kentucky, has this gut channel called Kentucky Ballistics. And one of the things he does is he tests weapons to failure. And yeah, I've written him several letters about you gotta quit doing that because it's just wrong. And yeah, I'm not gonna blow up any radios. I like the radios way, way too much. On the other hand, we may have a segment where we start torturing radio operators. That might be a whole different story. I don't know if what the rules on YouTube are about waterboarding, you know, operators to get them to comply, but I guess we can find out.
Speaker C: Yeah, you may Be pushing the rules a little bit there. Well, yeah, or blowing up or blending, you know, that you can't blend radials, I guess, you know, in the blender. That would be tough anyway. Well, very good. Well, maybe you've, you know, you can kind of change the algorithm around, maybe find out what actually sells there. But. Yeah, very good. Well, I mean, I thought to me it was just interesting to look at the older radios. I mean, all that stuff, you know, I grew up with and a lot of the radios I wish I could purchase, unfortunately, all I could get was like, you know, the heath kit type stuff radios that I had and those things were used, so. Speaker C: Okay, Mark. Well, not much here. Just looking, looking forward to what we have coming up here storm wise. And I know a lot of people are interested in what you have to say about what's coming up next week. So WB6BJN and N6H.
Speaker B: Okay. Well, the weather pattern, and you've probably heard me say this has taken a flip, a complete flip in the weather pattern. And I'm going to give my conditions here real quick just to show you what's going on. And I need to turn a radio down because it sounds like it's feedbacking just a little bit. There we go. Let's see 50, it's currently 30.2, 6.4 on the barometer and it is steady. Temperature 51.3 degrees and the dew point is 30. So it's fairly dry. Humidity is about 53ft, 44% on the humidity. So that's low. One gusting to 11, one gusting to 11 from the southeast on the wind and it's already 51 over 51 degrees. Now compare that to last week when I think a week ago today I was talking about temperatures that were still in the teens this hour, even here in Tennessee. So, yeah, the weather pattern has taken a flip and we got to look to the west coast for that because what happened, you guys were under high pressure. That high pressure has now moved eastward and is covering the middle, southern and part of the eastern parts of the United States with warmer temperatures. Now let me take.

Speaker A: A break. Now, warm, warmer means that some of the places further north, like into Michigan is still cool. If you get up into Maine, it's cold, Minnesota's cold. It's in the 20s and 30s, but that's still a lot warmer because last week it was in the single digits. Some places were below zero, some places had wind chills that were 25 and 30 below. So it is much better. And there's no snow expected anywhere in the Midwest for the weekend. In fact, in Michigan it'll actually be pretty nice. They won't get any precip until the middle part of the week. There is a low pressure way to the north, one that's going to affect us here in Tennessee to the south and that's going to pretty much take care of when we're going to get rain. Now California, you guys are going to get a boatload of rain and a boatload of snow in the Sierras. In fact, it's going to start late tomorrow going into Sunday, especially Sunday, all the way through about next Thursday. There will be some breaks but not much. And it's going to get colder. Let me take a break. We're looking at at least 2 to 4ft of snow in the Sierras from a multitude of systems. And there could be anywhere from 2, maybe 1 to 3, maybe even 4 inches of rain in the valley and maybe 4 to 6 inches in the higher elevations of the foothills. And there could even be snow that gets down to the upper foothills about 2,800ft. And this is because of multiple low pressure areas that are going to phase together along the coast. One of them is actually coming out of northern Alaska almost at the Arctic. So the polar vortex which affects affected the east is now sort of affecting the west. And we're under this high pressure area that covers the east. But some of this weather from the west is coming eastward and that's what's going to bring us a couple inches of rain. Some thunderstorms. Texas and Oklahoma are going to have thunderstorms. Much of the mid south is going to be unsettled with rain this weekend. And then next week it's going to get just downright warm. 60s, 70s and even parts of southern Texas could get into the upper 80s. And they said something about the Rio Grande Valley of Texas getting into the low 90s next week. That's crazy. Let me take another break. But Ryan Hall, Ryan Hall, y', all, if you want to go check him out, he's@ryanhall.com and quite a weather guy. He says do not be fooled by the weather pattern that we have now because that pattern will take a minute, another flip in about 14 or 15 days. Now we don't know the particulars on it, but he says another cold blast for the Midwest, the mid south and the East. And after about 14 days, guess what, you guys get high pressure back and it goes right back to what it was after what happens for next week. And the next 10 days will be probably wet, but high pressure could start building in to the west again in the eight to 14 day outlook. But that's still out in fairy tale land, so we won't worry about it for a while there. Tom. So some good rain and good snow for the valley and the Sierras and the coastal areas for the next at least seven days. Back to you sir. WV6DJ.

I mean that, that seems unheard of there have a temperature like that, almost like an outlier there. Well, yep, I guess we will definitely look forward to the rain and account for that. Like we're going to have a pretty, pretty steady set of storms coming through and also snow, which we can definitely use. Very good. Well, thank you for bringing that to us and giving us that warning. And so you think that the timing of this thing will start around Sunday? Is that what you were saying?
Speaker A: Okay, I just got a thing on YouTube that says this winter storm just got bigger and I think I'm gonna go read that off of YouTube later. Yeah, Sunday is today and tomorrow you guys are under a weak ridge, what we call a transitory. Shortwave ridge of high pressure. And that came in yesterday behind the front that you had the other day that dropped a little bit of rain and then once that's already starting to break down. In fact, the barometers were lower today than they were yesterday. So things are already starting to progress eastward. That high is going to leave and there could be some rain as early as tomorrow night. But more likely the heavy stuff starts Sunday, late Sunday and especially Sunday night through next Thursday. That's pretty much what's going to happen. There could be thunderstorms, there could be lots of snow in the Sierras, strong gusty winds and just periods of waves of wet weather through the middle and right up through Thursday. And that 90s in the Rio Grande Valley is not an outlier. That is, there's more than one model agreement on that. And lots of Texas has already been in the 80s already and parts of Oklahoma and they're going to have some severe weather. We're under what they call false spring right now. So it is coming to truth as that warm, moist southerly wind pull up out of the Gulf. And if any of that stuff gets back here, we watch for some severe weather. Back to you, Tom. WB6BJ.

Speaker A: Yeah, you know, Tom, it's amazing and I, people, people used to ask me how come you follow weather all over the nation and what's so what, what's the big deal about how this weather, you know, why do you, why do, why do you follow that? And my thing is, is these patterns are all connected. You know, what happens on the west coast affects what happens in the Midwest and East. They're all interconnected in many ways. And so that's what makes it real. That's what makes it real interesting. And we've had the flip in the pattern and amazingly warm temp, warmer temperatures. We went from almost dangerous cold to wearing shorts and flip flops. We were in the 70s here the other day. So it's crazy. All right, Tom, I hope you have a great weekend. Speaker C: It is very definitely still morning. It's sunny, good weather. Hopefully good weather on Monday for the pota. We're making plans for that already. So we'll see about that. It's been a, it's been one of those mornings. Just managed to get the meds all laid out for the next couple of weeks and support of little Miss Taffety Bonk, AKA the Four Weasel, deciding she wanted to play with all the nice little toys. So that was an interesting half hour.
Speaker B: Okay. Well, I guess, yeah. Trying to herd cats, right. Anyway, hopefully all that's set up and I guess you have. You're doing what, a presentation or teaching this this weekend?
Speaker C: Yep, just been working on getting all the gear there. I've got two classes that'll be. I'll be teaching, I'll be teaching the extra class, chapter 8 on modulation and digital. You know, in depth digital dive and slow scan and fast scan tv. And then what I'm getting all the gear together for is a hands on present into the tech class. Just talking about, you know, the smartphone can be a very useful amateur radio accessory. You can get on the air either cheaply or freely. And trying to give people, you know, if they're kind of going, well, I'm not sure I want to spend money right away showing them ways that they can get into the hobby. I'm not saying don't spend money, but just, you know, here are thoughtful paths if you do decide to spend money. So talking about hotspots, talking about radios and just, you know, the pluses and minuses of buying certain things.
Speaker B: What's kind of interesting about that as you're talking about using cell phones and phones and all that stuff, you know, when I talk to people about why they should get into amateur radio, I said because, you know, the emergency happens, you're not going to have self service, you're not going to be able to, you know, get on the Internet on your phone and that radio is going to be the only thing. But then now when you're kind of doing this thing like saying, well, you can use your phone for doing radio stuff. Yeah. Anyway, I can definitely see the difference there, especially in emergency situations.
Speaker C: Oh, absolutely agree. But at the same time I see so many of these techs get into the idea that they're going to talk to the entire world with a 2 meter radio, 2 meter talking just to the repeater and then they're frustrated when they feel like they've been sold a bunch of hui. And it's not really the tech's fault in my opinion. I think a lot of it is just, just poor messaging or poor clarification on what the bands that are available to them. Unless they learn CW, of course, what those bands can actually do just with radio and then talk, you know, when you start talking about things like DMR and dstar and All Echo Link. Then suddenly the world opens up to them.
Speaker B: That's true, but maybe also not everybody wants to talk around the world. You know, just the fact of being able to talk, you know, I could listen to the, the Coffee breaknet for example, just kind of have that type of stuff. The Coffee breaknet to me kind of reminds me a lot like, like local, local talk radio, you know, when I used it in the day. But I would just tune in just to hear different conversations and stuff. Like you kind of learn things. Well, kind of the same way with the, the Coffee Brick Net.
Speaker C: Oh, absolutely, agreed. But you know, I'm coming into the All Star, into the Coffee breaknet with my mic and All Star and you know, and pointing out to people that hey, they can join All Star nets or nets that are on All Star or Echo Link as well as the local repeater. And that expands the footprint and makes the footprint more affordable. We always, I always wind up having to talk to some parents because it's the, well, gee, how much is this going to cost me? Especially if they don't, if they're not interested and I talk about a gradated path to spending money so they're not investing a bunch of stuff up front for the child that has attended, you know, child's attention spans sometimes don't stick around and sometimes they do and it's, you know, hey, don't go out and buy a $500 HD if you're worried about that. But here is a way to get them on the air more afford.
Speaker B: And I'm sure peer pressure and you know, having their friends having a radio and you know, being able to have that helps because I know when I was in high school and stuff, you know, that was always a key thing for me having some friends that I knew that actually were involved with that and you know, we could discuss all that stuff and kind of share radios back and forth and just what we're doing there. So that's always a good part of it too.
Speaker C: And just giving people some hands on. So talking about again dstar, the various types of reflectors, talking about dmr, talking about Brandmeister and TGIF and letting people know, hey, here are some of the options if you want to do this and I'll talk about radios as well. And one of the things I'm going to encourage them is I have a problem with buying radios if you're just starting out over Amazon. I remember when I bought my first radio there was an amateur radio, toys an amateur radio store here in the Chicagoland. And the good thing about it is if I had questions, I could walk in there and ask them. When I bought my DMR radio from Ridgecom, they had that nice little course. There was an issue with it. I had some trouble with reprogramming the radio and somebody was taking the time to come on onto the Zoom session so we could go over it. I figured it out on my own, so I canceled it. But again, oftentimes that customer support is there. If you buy from a reputable dealer as opposed to just buying off of Amazon.
Speaker A: That is.
Speaker B: That is very true. Or being involved with a club like, you know, W6CK, the Sierra Fidelis Amateur Radio Club, where we have Elmer's and stuff. And, you know, there's. There's people that can. That can help out, which is always nice, especially in being able to at least have a contact. So, you know, running back. That also helps too. If you have an active club in the area,
Speaker C: It very much does. And it's just talking about those options and talking about those first steps forward and trying to make it more affordable, but also more realistic in terms of, you know, hey, this might be a path that's frustrating. This might be a path that's a little easier, it's a little more expensive, and really opening up all the possibilities to them in a way that they can, I think, more easily take some of those first steps. And also trying to get ahead of the hams who go, well, if you're using your phone, it doesn't count. How many people do we know that check in to the Coffee Breaknet every morning using either repeater phone or DV switch. And I don't think anybody here is going to start telling those people they're not real hands. So I want to get in front of those people, get ahead of those people. With these, hopefully new radio operators,
Speaker B: I think it is a very viable thing. Yeah, we do have a lot of people that do use a DV switch and repeater phone and stuff for All Star, and we do appreciate all those comments. Contacts coming through.

I actually featured an article I wrote is featured in one of the issues back in the 90s for the April issue. Take a look. Speaker A: Okay. Yeah, World Radio, I kind of remember that. I think there were. There was a whole bunch of I think swl right shortwave listener type of magazines that were out there. Was that like what the the World Radio was concentrating on?
Speaker B: Yeah, pretty much. It was printed on recycled newsprint I think definitely a notch down in terms of the tiers of magazines. Nothing glossy in it at the very tail end of it. The last section of the the magazine was always an article about antennas and the crazy things that people claim about antennas. Written by a pseudonym I think or a pen name whatever. The thing is. Kurt N. Sturba was the author's name and always good for both a laugh and some reflection on antennas. So that was kind of kind of fun. It was good to see back, you know that article in the back and yeah, a lot of it a lot of articles about just radio in general and they accepted my article for that issue so yay. Anyway, that along with the patents are my Claim to fame for the outside world. My 15 minutes of fame or something. But so busy day today. Speaker C: Well, good morning Tom and the Net pretty wore out. I've been working nights so I might be sounding a little groggy. We are gonna come out today. I'm at Brown's Ravine actually now I'm Gonna set up two different antennas and kind of just do a YouTube video over them. I got the G90 and my FT710 kind of show the difference on the receiving sound as well as you can. Can hear it through a GoPro. But talk about the difference between using the multiband chameleon setup versus the PODO performer. Just kind of why I would choose one over the other I guess. I like the PODO performer but sometimes you know, it's raining or whatever and I don't want to get out and have to adjust and retune for each fan. And then been experimenting with this cha 5 to 11 mini. And I also have the micro and a 17 foot width and a 25 foot width. And then I tried 8 and a half to 12 and a half foot even 17 foot radial. I finally found something that works. It definitely doesn't like the old school ground plane raised off the ground type configuration with the 26 radials. Dropped it down to 12 radials. Dropped it down to 8 raised radials with The Chameleon, you know, and have it a 180 or 360 all the way around it. What I found actually works really really
Speaker A: good is
Speaker C: it's going to be two, four. Yeah. So four. I found that four to six radials set up in a going east or whatever direction you want to communicate. Spread out in a nice equal pie. No more than 90 degrees. That's if you are resonant antenna. And I make really good contact. When I had it set up all the other ways, just SWR was fine but I wasn't making contact. As I start dropping the radios off to see if it's making a difference. When I got down to six to eight radials. Even down to the four is the minimum. But six, six seems to be the best. Four seems to work really well. The two, you can't really tell much of a difference by contact, at least in real time. Drop it and putting them back up. So I was really kind of excited about that because now I have an antenna configuration that I don't have to tune and I get really good contacts and good reach compared it next to the photo performer, of course the photo performer. I get a probably S1 to S1 and a half. Sometimes an S2 different. But you know, under. Under the same band conditions I'm making the same contact. So it's not making a difference and making a contact Fact I'll break this. But it works. It works well and you don't have to retune. It's just as easy to set up as a PODA performer. A little more of an investment because of the five to one chameleon. But anyone who's doing lots of podas sometimes you get tired of having to adjust the bands all the time and adjust the whip. And it'd be nice just to have a multi band antenna that performs really well from 20 through 6. And that's what does that trick. But then also talk about the PODO performer and the strength that it has. I get definitely way more DX on the photo performer than I do on the Chameleon. That's probably where it gets the furthest reach. I got Italy and Belgium tried to switch antennas and they say that S unit drop between the photo performer and the Chameleon definitely made a difference to making that contact or not. They go from like a five five down to a four, you know, four, three where they. They're like yeah, I can't hardly hear you. Push back the antenna. And all of a sudden your S units are a tremendous Increase. So DX is takeoff angle probably, I'm not really sure. But DX, the photo performer definitely, definitely works better. But for just local podas and not having to get out and readjust that antenna, you can reach all the way up to Maine and the east coast. So it works well. Anyway, that's. I'm experimenting a little bit more with that, doing a YouTube video for anyone who's looking to get started on photos
Speaker A: and in the field.
Speaker C: And I chose the G90 today because it's a fairly inexpensive radio and it works really, really well. And a lot of times that 20 watt radio will make the same contacts I make on my 891 radio. So I figured I'd just do a, you know, basic entry level. The amount of money that I would want to spend just to make sure that you're gonna have fun and do it. Granted, you can do it on a $150 5 watt radio, but it's not going to be nearly as easy. You're gonna work harder than you would with a 20 watt G90. Anyway. That's, that's what I'm doing this morning.
Speaker A: Okay, very good there, J. You're doing quite a bit of stuff there and you know, a lot of information done back there. So you talk about the, the four to six radios radio and you said you put them in kind of a pie shape in the direction that you want to want the to go. So are these radios, if you're talking about 20 to 6 meters on the thing. So what are, what, what length are the radios cut to? Are they cut to be resonant on any certain band or what is, what is that set up for?
Speaker C: No, I just, I mean I did a little bit of reading and research, but what I ended up doing was just kept cutting and changing until I found something that works. What I found works is 12 and a half foot radials, anywhere from four to six and no more. And then the deformation is pretty much just like, you know, the photo performer. You do a 90 degree angle on your outside angle and then all you're doing is filling in those other radials is a pie shape. It does not like just your radial. So it definitely doesn't operate or propagate the same way as the PODO performer. But it does work really well with anywhere from really about six to four. I wouldn't. Eight is kind of. You just don't, you really don't need. There's no difference. Like I said, so 6. I. I prefer to use 6 to 4 depending on how Lazy I am whether I want to put those extra two stakes out or not. And it's, it's the same configuration as a photo performance. Same distance off the ground for your feed point. 17 foot width or 25 foot width. I actually find that those both work the same. It doesn't seem to care if it's a 17 foot or 25 foot with the SWR will fluctuate. But SWR isn't everything as we all know. When I go and check the, the RX value, it's, it's a fairly, you know, it's compromised. It's a fairly resonant antenna. It's not like it's compromised. It's on my long wire or even 29 and a half foot wire that outperforms all those all day long. So yeah, 12 and a half foot, six radials, no more than a 90 degree angle opening. A lot of times I'll narrow that quite a bit and I notice I get a little more gain on receive and send. Just like the podo performer. I get the same results out of po performer but yeah, that's it. 12 and a half foot radial.
Speaker A: Okay, very good. And these 12 and a half foot radials work well for going from 20 to 6 meters. I mean it doesn't matter what band you're on.
Speaker C: Yeah, it does. Performance wise, it does not matter what band I'm on. SWR of course varies, but the resonance, when you look at the bands and you look at what the actual RX and return lot values are, they're really pretty good. So it's. It works well. It works very well. And again, you don't have to retune so yep, it'll, it'll operate from 20 through 6 with no problem. I noticed that 10 meters is probably a little higher on the SWR side, but I have not noticed any kind of like it's not been frustrating to operate on 10 meters at all. It works, works really, really well. So. But yeah, 6 and 10 are probably the worst. You know, we were not talking much over a 2. Everything's usually a 2.5 or lower across the whole.
Speaker A: Very good. Well, I'm sure all this information is great. I mean it's. You're doing a lot there and a lot of experimentation and stuff and.
Speaker C: Very good.
Speaker A: Well, thank you for providing that and have fun today. It's like you're going to have, have fun doing a PODA and kind of doing that video there, so. Sounds very good. I got a nice day for it. N6FMD and N6H.
Speaker C: Yeah, I definitely like operating radio. Still have a lot to learn, that's sure. But there's theory and then there's what works in the field. And I'm starting to learn how to use the antenna modeling. And really for me, all I find is it's a good guideline to kind of maybe give you an idea where not to waste your time and where you can play. But as far as what really happens when the signal leaves the antenna, it's kind of up to the atmosphere sphere of the sun and what's really going on and your ground plane as well. But yeah, learning a lot and learning some practical experience. You know, I've had a lot of naysayers on this configuration. I even talked to Camilan about it. They didn't think it performed very well. They like, they like to just use a single radio. But I just. It just didn't work that well for contacts. I mean, SWR looked great and everything else, but I wasn't making contact. But once I got those four to six radial up there figured out, now I feel like I'm almost by my performer. And that's, that's what I was looking for. A multiband antenna that I can make great contacts and not have to work super hard or get really weak signal reports. And this seems to be the. This seems to be the map. So. But again, it's like everything is guidelines. We have theories, we have hypothesis. But conditions, ground conditions, there's just so many variables. And when you can figure out something that kind of works the. In all those different variables, you stick with it. So yeah, today my favorite antennas that I would recommend a Wolf River Coil. Build your own PODO performer or the Chameleon System. All you really need to do is buy a whip and either the micro. The mini five to one. It's just really convenient to use that whip antennas and quick deployment. So I'm a big fan of that. I don't know. I haven't played much with any of the other delta loopers. Complete failure for me. I put it 30ft in the air, I put it 15ft in the air. I put it on the ground. Absolutely disappointed. Except for invis. If I want to talk to somebody local, that is the delta loop. Tha is the antenna I go with. But if I'm doing poda, I would just stay away from it. I know a lot of people are probably going to hate up on me for that, but that's the reality of what my experience is in the field. It's no fun when you can't make the contacts. And when you got that incentive, Nick's a Wolf river or something else. And you're switching between that antenna tuner. That's real life, real band conditions right here and now. There's no oh bands were better that day than the other. No, we're. We're making a contact with someone who's staying on the radio with you and you're dropping 3s units and then they sometimes don't even come back to you until you switch back to the other attendant. So yeah, Delta loops out of what this is, but that's what it's designed for, so it's not to bash on it. Its intention is not to reach out that far. It's really made for. For emergency communications. Right in your neighborhood being 300, you know, plus miles. Anyway, that's it. Tom, I could talk all day. I love this stuff. Thanks for doing the net this morning and getting me in there. Speaker A: Hey, very good there, Jimmy. Well, you have, you have a lot of good practical experience, which is really nice and definitely enjoyed your presentation there at the club. One quick question. I don't mean to belabor this whole conversation, but I think you were looking at the mesh fabric stuff. Did that ever work out for you or you think that the. This whole four to six radios is probably a better situation than doing the mesh.
Speaker C: So what I found, Wilfriver Recoil. Any antenna that's ground mounted or. Yeah, low to the ground, within a foot. You don't need radial. The ferriting cloth works awesome, but when you get above that point, it doesn't work at all. I assume that it's because the electric connection between your. You're just too far above it for it to actually play a role. And that's where you need the radials. And all these radials I'm talking about are all off the ground about three foot or more. Like there's nothing on the ground. These are like counterpoise wires up in the air, per se. I mean, if you use a single, it's more of a counterpoise because it becomes. It's a different. It's more like a secondary. Like a dipole. When you use multiple. I'm finding that it seems to be the patterns or whatever when you run the bottom more like the ground plane. So yeah, Faraday cloth works great for anything low to the ground within a foot. Anything on a little tripod, Wolf River Coil, you know, all those gable. All These different antennas, the JPC12, anything along that line that's below the ground, don't even bother with radials. Throw a Faraday cloth down there, you'll get 40 through 10, even down to 6 with no problem with the Faraday cloth and you get great SWR. Like we're talking a return loss of 23 to 30 depending on where you tune. But I, my SWR is always anywhere from a 1.2 to a 1.02 on a Faraday cloth. When I use ground radio sites, I don't get that I can't get it tuned that I get it tuned well, but not that, not that good. Now we're looking really resonant. So Faraday cloth, JPC 12 Gables, anything a foot off the ground works great. Anything above that, you're going to need to go with some radials. Very good with that.
Speaker A: Practical advice here and you know, very interesting there. So, okay, so the 30 cloth works if you have a ground mounted type of antenna. Okay, very good. Well, you've done the testing and stuff which is really, you know, where it matters. You know, just what actually works, what doesn't work and also being able to switch between the different, the different antennas and two and find out just how it affects on the transmit side of things. Yeah, so I've heard on the delta loop stuff, you know that it's a good receiving antenna, transmitting antenna there. So very interesting. All right, Dane, Jimmy, well, thank you for all that information and also for all the testing and stuff and providing all the patch core information. I really appreciate that. Anyway, back to you there for any, any final and you have a great day there doing your poda and doing your testing N6FMD and N6H.

I didn't get to sleep until about 5 in the morning, woke up just a little before noon, so yeah, kind of standard for me this week apparently. Just curious, are you on a different node?

Speaker B: I've never heard you with a squelch tail before. Yeah, I'm on a different node and
Speaker A: I haven't really have it set up there yet. I have an ASL3 node that I had set up, so that's what I've been using since I. My other node is up in Lincoln. Okay.
Speaker B: Yeah, I thought I heard the typical ASL three tails. There are a couple of them just kind of wondering about that. But that sounds alright.
Speaker A: Yeah.
Speaker B: Interface and I think It's a Lenovo ThinkCenter. I forget what it is. It's like a Core i5 or something like that. Desktop. So tomorrow we're going to go up to the repeater site and figure out how to program the ESCOM repeater controller they have for their link port. Full duplex link port. I've never messed with an S Com. This is an S7300 controller. So this will be a new adventure kind of thing, I guess.

Speaker A: Yeah, Patrick. Not sure what's going on there, but look like you're. You're not when you're talking. We lost some audio in your node, and then also maybe when you unkeyed there, it was still keying up there. Not sure what's happening.
Speaker B: I don't know. It seemed normal over here. I got the courtesy tone when it dropped and everything, so couldn't tell you.

Speaker A: It looked like there was some. Some audio dropouts. So that your audio. Basically, the. The carriers, There was some audio.
Speaker B: What I am is clueless. I mean, that's the general state of my existence anyway, so we'll just continue the theme of cluelessness. I don't have a way to monitor what's being sent from the. From the node, so, like, that never happened. And maybe it'll happen again. That'd be exciting.

Speaker A: Let me just get a clarification. Can anybody out there tell me if. If Patrick's audio was dropping out during his transmission? Or maybe it's on my side only. Yeah, I lost them too. Speaker B: What a stupid device. Well, what I will do after this is I will take a sledgehammer to this radio, I will grind the Raspberry PI up into tiny little bits and feed it to a small dog, and then we'll see what happens after that.

Speaker B: It might, but. Yeah. Anyway, I was just saying. So tomorrow we're going up to a repeater site to deploy an ASL3 node.

Speaker B: get to figure out how to program an Escom repeater controller. The node part I understand, but I've never messed with an Escom repeater controller before. So the S7300 is what we're playing with there. Figuring out how to do a full duplex link port and updating the firmware, because apparently there's some firmware issues with the old firmware they've got now and how it works with full duplex link ports. So I've got to figure out how to update the firmware and program the port and get everything set up so that they. And they, unlike you guys, they actually want to maintain the ability to switch between analog and digital on this particular YAESU repeater. So got to get all that figured out and then get the node online.
Speaker A: Okay, well, it sounds like be a good challenge for you. I'm sure that you're up to that and learning some new stuff there with that, especially with that new controller there. And by the way, your audio is fine. That last transmission there, so I'm not sure what was going on. So maybe you don't need to destroy the. The radio and the PI just yet.

Speaker B: I was kind of looking forward to that. Yeah, I don't know. I didn't change anything. Could just be the Internet connection here that. The connection here has been acting really kind of odd since we had a storm a couple weeks ago. It's not really been right since then, so I don't know.

Speaker A: Yeah, the RT systems is actually a paid version. I think it's around $50 for doing that. That's what I've used. Go ahead, comment. Yeah, good morning. KI6 PPF here. As far as an FC60RT systems is your best bet.
Speaker B: Every once in a while your laptop
Speaker A: will have a little trouble recognizing the programming cable, but the software is a piece of cake over. Yeah, I agree. I have an FT65 and FT70 and I use the RT system software for that and that seems to work out well there. Anyway, back to you there, Dan.

Speaker A: It's just a one time thing. I think it's, I think it's around $49 or something like that. It's just a one time charge for software.

Speaker B: Over the last week while I'm at work, it varies if I use my phone or if I remotely connect in to the IC9700 here at the QTH to get in. So it all depends. But I'm, I'm setting, trying to set things here and I tried checking in as I said earlier, I tried checking in a few times and especially when Patrick had that one issue with the packet loss and my home rig just wasn't getting out and so I had to fire up the ht, you know, the CCR radio and that's where I'm always really hot is with the CCR radio.
