Speaker B: Just headed back towards the. Towards Yuba City and Sutter coming back from Walnut Creek out there in the Bay Area.
Speaker A: So you had to heard that entire qsl?
Speaker B: Yes, sir.
Speaker A: Long. How long was it? I don't have a clock in my truck that works.
Speaker B: It was about an hour. Probably about an hour, five minutes.
Speaker A: Oh wow. Gotta be one of the longer 2 meter QSOs I've ever had, to be honest.
Speaker B: Oh no.
Speaker A: Oops. Apologies for tying up the repeater. I do apologize. Well, that was a good qsl. Well, what were you doing down there? First of all,
Speaker B: we got a church out there in Walnut Creek that we got a contract with. So every Saturday and Sunday, well, since the weekend before Christmas, I go out there and work the church for the weekend.
Speaker A: Change of pace and must be a pretty good fellowship and. Sounds great. It's quite a drive, that's for sure. Yeah, that must be interesting actually. Tell me more KN6WNR.
Speaker B: It's actually a pretty good gig. You know, I get to go to a church. They've got speakers outside so I could hear the entire sermon and everything. And I get to go through four different services. One on Saturday night and then three on Sunday. But I usually get out there Saturday afternoon, get a hotel room set up, go work for Saturday night for two hours, go to the hotel room, be up early next morning, go do it again.
Speaker A: Nice. That's cool. You probably see a lot of enjoyment in that. That's good. How is everything else going?
Speaker B: It's going. It's got a stressful moment, I'll put it that way. But yeah, I've, you know, been doing security work for six months now. Almost seven months. And two months ago, three months ago, something like that, they made me a supervisor. And yeah, it's been interesting. I've got two investigations that I'm working on for fraudulent claims for workers come. So they're. They're keeping me busy.
Speaker A: Wow. Okay. At least you found something that's more up your alley. I remember you told me about it, about that time frame when you. Right before you started doing. I did. I didn't take you that long to find a job then. That's good. I know. I'm still working at Target. Still there. I quit the job that Buffalo Wild Wings. If you wondered, I was working two jobs. Now I'm just working one. I am actively job searching. I haven't stopped job searching. I'm living on the bare minimum right now. It's hard to the point where I'm probably gonna have to get food stamps even though I'm still living with my parents, because I can do that. So, yeah, I'm gonna have to do that because I'm just not getting enough hours. I'm making a whole lot. I can't really live off of 7, 800 a paycheck, so I'm still paying my parents rent, 500 bucks. But still, I. It's just. I don't know.
Speaker B: Yeah, it's pretty rough out there right now. I know my oldest boy, he. He does, you know, he's in Marine Corps Reserve now, but he only drills one weekend a month. So he's only getting like 200amonth out of that. But he's been job searching and he just. Nobody seems to be hiring right now. And for a matter of fact, Monday or gonna finalize his application for his guard card to do security. And then we're gonna bring him on with our company that way, you know, because we need, we need guards right now. We just took down a three year contract that's 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And so we need all the help we can get. So we're bringing him in and getting him all trained up and everything for can put him to work. But he's applied over 60 places from here to Roseville and nobody will hire him.
Speaker A: W E6A X N receiver. I fully empathize with that. I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, pretty much same here too. I've not been here in any back at all. I'm applying every day. I don't know just the area, what's going on. I'm just doing the best I can and I hope I wish the best for him as well. And anybody else that's also struggling with this, that may be listening, there's always other people listening. It's really unfortunate to hear that. You know, it's not easy right now and you know, it's a really, it's a really great thing that he is still serving even just one week in a month. He's still serving his country. That's a great thing. It's a really honorable thing. He should absolutely keep on doing that. You know, just, I don't know where he could go work at because I've literally tried everywhere and I haven't got anything back and I'm like, I don't know where the jobs are. I don't know what to say. Speaker B: This area right now is hurting for jobs. You know, I keep hearing everybody. Oh well, everybody's hiring. Really. It seems like the only way you get hired on to anywhere in this area right now is if you know somebody on the inside of a company that get you in there. So that's really sad, you know, because I mean he went in the Marine Corps to be a diesel mechanic, you know that that's his mos. That's what he does in the Marines.
Speaker A: And even the, the mechanic shops around
Speaker B: here, they're like, well, first of all, you don't have your aspect. And second of all, we're just not hiring right now.
Speaker A: Oh, it's really hard to hear that. I'm sorry. That just adds to the stress, you know. And honestly that's how I got the job at Target because my mom works there. That was a huge factor else I'd still be unemployed to this day. And the reason why I got the job at Buffalo is because I knew the Manager. I knew the guy who earns it. That's how I, it's, it's literally that right there you have to know somebody that's already in to get a job out here. I don't know what to say. I, I, I, I don't know how kids just coming straight out of high school or actually get to jobs right now if at all. I don't know. That's rough. I mean I look back when you know, I got right out of the Cuba college, I found a job right away. It was a lot easier. I got the job at Sam's Club, I was there for like years, almost five years and I got the job over at Race and lay off from there.
Speaker B: Easier? Yes sir. Yeah, it's been horrible. I mean you know I went through, I, you know I did a full on academy for getting my, you know, my guard card and all my permits for you know, for being a guard so I could do armed guard and it still took me three weeks, you know, to get a job. And I just fortunately found a company here in Yuba City that you know, had a position open. I put in my application. 30 minutes later I got a phone call from the vice president of the company, asked me to come in immediately for an interview. I walked out, you know, four hours later with a job and I got, I counted myself very lucky because right
Speaker A: now with getting jobs is rough.
Speaker B: You know, I can't even. I was putting in applications for security out in Sacramento and couldn't get a call back.
Speaker A: Something with the area. I don't fully understand what's going on but yeah, I fully empathize with that and it's a good thing you got, you got a job and you got a job that you and a career path that you want and that's what matters. At the end of the day I'm a few to keep on looking. I'm going to keep on putting in applications. I'm not quitting, I'm keeping up on that. I'm not going to go a day without doing that. I'm making sure. I've been putting in applications late at night when I get off of work because I work late. I always close at target. That's the only time they'll probably see me there because in my department somebody opens and somebody closes so I'm the closer. So normally what I do is I'll do the application after I get off or sometimes before like I'm doing today hoping to get a call back and I'm not getting anything back. Not a call back. Maybe sometimes they'll send a rejection email. Most of the time they just go. They don't even say anything. I don't have any idea. Oh well. Gotta keep on going. I guess. That's just it.

Speaker A: Okay Lance. Well unfortunately our host up there became Silent Key KB6TR passed away. It's been about three weeks ago now and we are figuring that his widow is going to to vacate the property up there. It's still in a bit of state of flux but I am fairly certain that our next move in this whole thing will be to collect the station duplexer and peripherals and all that and actually get them off the site there and that's going to be pending here in the next well, few weeks. I think
Speaker C: I knew about the passing and I knew there was a good chance that we weren't going to be able to raise it up. I just wondered if anybody discussed another solid, another site but again I didn't know what. I wasn't there at the meeting. So if there was anything passed on as far as any kind of upcoming
Speaker D: event or anything W E A X N repeater.
Speaker A: Well, I'm going to try to contact Terry's widow this week by telephone and see what her plans are. I foresee us in fact just collecting the gear there. We have a possible alternate site back on Kelly Ridge essentially kind of going full circle there that KD6 Lil's placed which was the original repeater site way back when it might, the repeater just might return there full circle.
Speaker C: QSL. I knew that the present location was probably a no go anyway and I didn't know if we had an alternate site or not. Okay, well, if there was nothing else that went on during the meeting Friday, then I'll go ahead and pass it off to K6HMP. Go ahead and take it there.
Speaker D: KC6FLB in the net K6HFP. Thanks Lance. This is John up Norville. Not a lot from me. Had an interesting meeting on Friday. Definitely was good to see everybody that did show up. It was a. Jeff had a presentation on a new little vertical HF vertical antenna, portable HF vertical antenna that he picked up and he did some testing yesterday and I went ahead and ordered one myself. So I'll have the HF vertical to toss up here and there.
Speaker C: Maybe get on HF a little bit more.
Speaker D: Once I get that, that'll be kind of cool. But other than that, just watching this weather system approach and I've been hearing some, some decent rain totals that we're going to be getting and fairly low snow levels on starting Tuesday night and Wednesday. Not sure how much precipitation we're going to be getting by then, but if the precipitation holds and the forecast holds, it's possible we might be getting some Snow down to 1500ft, which would be kind of cool. I heard one forecast say up to a foot at 1500ft. Now take it with a grain of salt of course, because that doesn't happen very often, but hey, if they're forecasting it, I'm looking for it if it happens. So everybody stay warm and dry. But other than that, just trying to stay up on my extra class studies. Hopefully I'll be ready on the 13th next month to upgrade.

I found that the tuning string on the main tuning is broken and

Speaker B: getting much for audio output so I'm have to look into that and see what's going on and nothing else is going on and KB9MYS back to net control.
Speaker A: KB9MYF and the NAT W7X Ray Z okay Jeff and that SX71 I got to use one a bit way way way back in the early 1960s. Quite a nice receiver in its day there two slide rule dials one for the general coverage and the other dial the other rule dial there for band spread for the different bands. And yeah the dial cords unfortunately don't last forever and now and again need replacement. I'm not even sure if one can even find dial cords that near the electronic part anymore. I'm sure somebody's got some somewhere. Anyway it's raining here also had a beautiful morning and then it kind of turned to rain this late afternoon and I'm going to put out another call. Are there any additional check ins to the nav this W7X Ray Zulu? Nothing Heard kind of in short session here tonight and well things I guess got kind of interesting Friday with the rupture of the penstock there from I guess if I have it right a little Grass Valley reservoir and the pen stock going to the powerhouse behind it or below it I should say it's a good thing at least that there was a gate to shut off the water flow to the penstock. Otherwise it could have been a really bad mess flood wise perhaps all the way to Marysville. Anyway it's going to be a while I think before that powerhouse goes back online. Well I have to probably do a complete replacement of a pen stock between the dam and the powerhouse anyway not much else to report here. Haven't done too awfully much radio wise except get on with the couple friends in the morning on 75 meters for about a half an hour between 7 and 7:30. Speaker E: I heard that the pen stock break was below Lake Francis. Not Bullish. Bullish ships water to Lake Francis and the Penstock break was down below Lake Francis and there were some three workers who were down in there and one of them is had to be med backed out down to wherever they went Orville, Yuba City. I don't know but yes, it's tragic but what I was saying I'm tragically sad anytime I hear a silent key and if his widow is going to be selling anything I'd like to be appraised of that would be because I might be able to buy it and give her some money for something I might want.
Speaker A: Okay Ken. Well I'm hoping to make contact with her this week. I think she's still kind of recovering from the trauma of losing her life partner there, her husband and anyway I've been getting my information from a close friend of hers that goes to St. Paul's here in Oroville.

I can't figure out because they, they ran the. I don't want to just start nipping wires and they don't give you. At least on the schematics I've looked at for the alpha 99, they don't. They don't tell you which of the wires run the fan. So I could shut that
Speaker B: off. The one that's built into it. The fans that come in a 99. No. Yeah. You don't have any choice. When you turn it on, the fans. Come on. Gave me an idea with that though.
Speaker A: They have an optional fan in the back to blow cool air into the. Into the upper cavity. And that's where the inside onboard tube cooler squirrel cage is. And it blows the fan into a box underneath the top area and up through the tubes, you know, to cool them. So mate, just maybe I'll see the color of the wires for the inside fan. Have to look up. I think, I think I'll try looking up the optional outside 4 inch whisper fan that they. They'll send for you. There's got to be wires for that.

I was going to report real quickly that yesterday I was driving into Grass Valley to go up to Hill Slat and I noticed that they are taking all the trees down on both sides of the freeway going into Grass Valley up to Pretty Much from Lavar Meadow Road up to Allison Ranch Road and Meadow Road and McKnight Way. I don't know if you're familiar with that area, but they're just leveling all the trees on both sides. So this is part of the newest of as part of the State Route 49 Improvement Project, which eventually will merge with a second project to widen 49 all the way down to Lake of the Pines. So a huge improvement project to widen the freeway, improve traffic flow, I guess improve the evacuation capabilities of the road in case of a wildfire.
Speaker C: But.
Speaker E: But it's going to be a significant change. And then they're building another big roundabout right up by McKnight.
Speaker B: I always enjoy driving Highway 49 up towards your neck of the woods. It has always been so beautiful with those towering trees beside the road and just things have to change. I understand it could be a significant issue if there was a wildfire sweeping through there, but yep. Now if they only would have bypassed Auburn, they were going to funnel all that better traffic flow right into the bottleneck.
Speaker E: You are exactly right. That's an interesting project. Anybody who's curious about anybody that travels up the Grass Valley periodically for at least two years, maybe more likely three years, it's going to create significant traffic challenges. And I guess most of the construction is going to be done at night, which means we may get an impact noise wise too.
Speaker B: So I'm sure they'll give you some sort of discount on your taxes.

So I signed up, when I was there, I signed up for getting text and yeah, I get text from them. And today, since the President Day, they have a special going. So it's one of those things where you wish there was an obvious failure, but there isn't. Speaker A: Yeah, projected. I saw the weather thing before I left the house and California's getting deluged right now heading our way. It's supposed to be here probably early afternoon and be with us through Wednesday or so.
Speaker B: Oh, wow. Well, I wonder, does Charleston a rainbow because it's gonna be flooded over there. Because I know that the water would really rush down off that mountain and flood that area. Or did they fix it?
Speaker A: You know, the flood control district has done a phenomenal job over the past decade or so. Probably more so we don't get a lot of that anymore. I mean, every now and again we'll get a little bit in some parts of the valley, but not near as prevalent as it was. They've done a great job. And then when the flooding does happen, it typically subsides fairly quickly. They got some good flood channels going through town retention basins all over the place. So there's a few spots. I'm not sure if that's one of them, but largely it's not really a thing anymore for us. But you know, having said that, we've been kind of in a drought condition for a while and montitude season isn't near what it used to be, but we'll get. We'll get a few inches every now and again. That causes some issues. They don't have any flood warnings out for us. They got high wind warnings out and we're supposed to get a couple of feet up in the mountaintops.
Speaker B: Okay, so how much snow have you guys gotten up there by the. By the site?
Speaker A: Very little. We got some around Turkey Day I think it was that locked us out of high potency for about a couple of weeks. I had a radio. I had to get fixed the 146.88 I had on my bench for a while waiting to be able to get up there. And then there's been nothing. But this storm that's coming through today is going to drop. Like I said, a foot or two of snow there. So that'll hamper us for a while unless we really get back in check a warm. A warm, you know, spot or streak or whatever. But it's been a very dry season.
Speaker B: Yeah, it's been that way everywhere. Colorado, so the Colorado river, you know, it's not gonna be flowing like it used to. I wonder, how does Lake Mead doing? Is it still way, way down or has it come up any.
Speaker A: No, it's way down. They're predicting, I think another 10ft down this year. I forgot how many feet entirely it's down, but it's down quite a bit. It's been on a decline for at least the past 20 years. It's pretty bad. Got a huge bathtub ring around it. Remember being this low?
Speaker B: Yeah, I remember. I think it was 86 where they had to stop all traffic going over the dam. That was before the bridge and it was just flowing like crazy. And then here it is, you know, 40 years later, later, and it's almost nothing. Gosh, that. That's too bad. And we've been getting a little bit of storms here and there. We're going to start warming up into the 70s next week. We're going to be having some thunderstorms. And Guntersville Lake, it's. It's huge. I don't think it's as big as Lake Mead was, but it's. It's pretty big. And it's fed by the Tennessee river and that thing's flowing all the time, sometimes more than we want, but it does run. So. Yeah. Wow, that's. That's something else. Having that lake down that back. You know, there's no fishing. Well, I'm assuming there's no real good fishing. There might be. N7TND AB4LV.
Speaker A: Yeah, I remember when the water went over the top of the bridge, or I'm sorry, top of the dam. They were worried about the thing just cavitating. Right. But, yeah, I used to spend a lot of time on the lake back
Speaker B: when I had a boat and lived
Speaker A: over on the east side of town, back when you knew me. And combination of moving all the way to the west side of town, the drought had just made it just terrible. I mean, it would take forever to try to find a place to launch the boats. A lot of the smaller launch facilities that I used when I lived over on the east side of town had shut down because the water receded so bad. But anyways. But you know what? They're still building houses like crazy, so I don't get it. It's all about making profit. I guess you're thinking valley here has just been booming with population again. A lot of people leaving California heading this way. Some folks retiring from Midwest area moving here, but I don't know, they keep piling in. Houses keep going up. But anyways, we're in for a little bit of a cold streak this week and next week. Then we'll probably start warming up and get some melt on the mountaintops. But other than that, kind of more of the same. Got the day off today because it's President's Day. So I got a few errands I'm trying to run kind of out and about for a bit and I got a bad balance. I need to replace my off center fed antenna. I may get around to that today. I got the thing in a couple of weeks ago. I just haven't had a chance to get out there and put it in, install it, all that good stuff. So I might do that. Gonna probably be about it. Back to the grind tomorrow.

And then we're gonna go out to lunch. My brother's gonna pick us up. We'll go out to lunch and come back here. It's a place we've never been before. It's in one of the other towns. It's in Albertville. It's about 15 miles from here. Not too bad. It doesn't take very long to get there. So we'll, we'll see what that brings. And that's, that's been about it that's going on.
Speaker A: And you know, I have a lot
Speaker B: of fond memories about living in Pahrump. Especially when you guys had to take the helicopter up to Potosi to fix the repeater. That, that was just unbelievable. When you guys did that, you had a limited time to do it in too, didn't you? Yeah, I remember that.
Speaker A: I got pictures of that. We had to. I forgot if it was the UHF or the VHF box, but I remember we actually had taken antenna up there, station master, and we got pictures of myself and it's you guys in the metro helicopter. And the antenna was. Had both doors open on the helicopter and the antenna was sticking out both sides because it was so damn long. It was like 22, 25. They're big ass antennas. You can't take them apart. Yeah, we had to get up there and, and they dropped us off on potency and they had to go. They were just. It was a training exercise for them. And so they were like, okay, guys, you got like whatever it was however many minutes and we're coming back and if you're not ready to go and we're on approach, we're out of, you know, you guys are stuck. Which I'm. I'm sure they wouldn't let us stranded, right, because it was. There was no way to get up there with the snow, but that's what they said. And I remember vividly I was still doing alignments on the radio or the controller or whatever the heck I was tweaking on. And the helicopter was inbound and one of the guys was like, ralph, hurry
Speaker B: up, they're coming in.
Speaker A: They're coming in like, oh shit. Finishing everything else up, shut down the service monitor, packed everything up and then right about the time the helicopter landed. But yeah, that was a while ago.
Speaker B: Yeah, it was. I remember that. Oh my gosh, those days. And is there still a lot of packet use? I know you guys used to have. Was it 01 and 07, maybe 01
Speaker A: with
Speaker B: Wayne Shanks, K7WS? I can't remember. I think you guys had 0107 on packet, is that right?
Speaker A: You know, I don't remember if we had. I know there was 0105 07. I don't remember which ones we had. But yeah, you know, not. We don't do that anymore. I think there might be some packet around the valley. I don't really know. Kind of a note in the. What we don't use anymore. But yeah, we had, we had a node on low potency, high potency and on Red Mountain and we took all that stuff down long time ago. Right now we've got aprs up
Speaker B: on
Speaker A: Lo Potency, Angel Peak and Highland Peak. So there's, there's three nodes there. But I know there's some packet around. I'm not sure who's still doing it.
Speaker B: Okay, I remember it was pretty popular back in the 90s. It might have been before that. I don't know. I wasn't licensed till 89,
Speaker A: but I
Speaker B: think my ex got into it about 91 or 92, something like that. And talking to all the guys in Las Vegas and going into the 36 meter link over to Big Bear and talk to people in Southern California and there was, there was quite a few guys that would get on there. You know, I think of calls and I look them up and wonder what happened to them? There was a guy, his call was Kilo Bravo seven, Oscar, Oscar, Oscar. And he was some kind of a dealer at one of the casinos. And I haven't looked him up. And there was another guy. I don't remember his call, but he was a real old guy. And I don't think he's around anymore because that was like 30 something years ago. And he was probably in his 70s back then. So it's amazing how people just, you know, we all get old, but hopefully we can stay healthy.
Speaker A: That's right.
Speaker B: That's what it's all about.
Speaker A: I pretty much do the gym every day. Matter of fact, after I get done running my errand here, I'm gonna go do my workout, try to stay active. I feel good too. You know, I've been really hitting the gym a lot. Well, for the past 15, 20 years, probably. I've been really serious about it. So gotta stay. Gotta stay moving. But anyways. All right, well, I can't.
Speaker B: There's something I was just gonna mention,
Speaker A: Doug, you were mentioning just top to my brain, but I forgot what it was. Anyways. Yeah, I know back in the packet days, I was heavy into it too, man. You know, had set your TNC up and send a message to some guy and, like, come back, you know, after work and your message light was flashing. It was kind of cool. But, yeah, hamburger was definitely different back then. Right before all the Internet and cell phone stuff hit, there's a lot more activity on the band, at least on the voice bands like vhf, uhf, et cetera. Now it seems like there's still a lot on hf, which I thoroughly enjoy, but not so much on these bands anymore.
Speaker B: Yeah, you know, I remember 8. 8 was so much fun. And then, of course, you know, it got stretched out into linking up with Utah and stuff. So a lot of people went to the more local repeaters. So I wasn't able to talk to them, except I could get into Black Mountain and I could get into the nine Fort machine. I think that was on the Tropicana. That was the only two machines I could get into. And. But yeah, there was some. Some people. There was a. Oh, gosh, some gal. I can't even remember her name. She. She was on 88, like, 24. 7. My God, she drove me nuts. She was talking to a guy, Larry Tatum, in Pahrump. And both of them just drove me up nuts. And a lot of jamming started happening. And they. They accused me of doing the jamming. And I thought, oh, my gosh so I didn't Even bother with 88 after that.
Speaker A: And 7T&D.
Speaker B: I remember the.
Speaker A: You know, we had. We had a lot of badge every there back in the day and all the bands, all the creepers, I would say. Yeah, 349 4. I used to be the trustee for that club a long time ago. Then it just got to be too much trying to keep Ajaxo on the air and those guys. I did the repeater for the Nellis Radio Club on Apex for a while and I just. I just had to back out of that stuff. Got to be too much. So I kind of pulled back. But yeah, there was a lot of that. I know 3494 used to get jammed a lot. A lot of people messing with their auto patches. And that thing on 88, that must have been before we were linked to the Snowbird system like we are now. I think it was probably just a standalone repeater back then.
Speaker B: Yeah, it was. Oh, I was also able to get in, I think, to the 8:2. I think that was on Christmas Peak or Christmas Mountain over off of. What was it? I can't remember. Gosh, going toward Indian Springs, I think. But yeah, I remember a lot of that stuff. It was a lot of fun. Had a lot of good times in Pahrump and Las Vegas. Meet up with a couple of friends and go out and have lunch or something like that. Yeah, that's when it was a standalone and it was a great repeater because when I got there in 1989, a lot of guys, you know, a lot of guys were in the real estate. And one guy was. But he did a lot of banking for real estate. He was driving all the time. So we talked quite a bit. And of course, all our Peters were really fun back then. And I went into California and I was tuning around, I found this repeater. It was a Mount Wilson Peter and I repeater. And I thought, good God, you know these people, are they on a Navy ship or something? Or they're really going at it. I'm never going to listen to that one again. That was a pretty bad repeater.
Speaker A: The A2 repeaters in St. Louis. It's one of the mountaintops over St. George, Utah. Remember which one? I want to say Frisco Peak. That's not right. Anyways, it's one of the mountains over St. George. It's still on the air. Matter of fact, it's LinkedIn to 88 through the blowhard system. We go high potency to Blowhard. And I think at Blowhard they spur off to a bunch of different radios. That might be one of them. Yeah, I know what you mean about the other activities. There used to be a link system here in California. Link system? That was bad that way. I forgot what the heck they were called. They may still be on the air. They had a drop off here on Mount Potency. Low potency I think that was pretty active but we've had our share of that here in the valley on some of the lower level Florida valley floor radio let's put my lab against it has subsided anyways. All right. I got my answers for wiring the O2 sensor for five bucks. That was a worth it deal. But I told them if it works, I'll. I'll send them a couple extra bucks. I'm pretty happy with it. I couldn't get that information out of the Denso. You know that they got the QR code there. It's supposed to give you the cross reference for the wires, but anyway, I'm gonna try. It doesn't make 100% sense to me, but it doesn't have to. Well, we hurried up and paid the. So if I have to drive the car down and have new tags and they pull me over, I'll already have an appointment with my regular smog people. And yeah, I'll have to drive it around for a good, good while before it'll even send the information to itself so that the light will go off. Then I can go in and get. Get a smog. It'll be okay long as I got the, the registration paid with dmv, which I already have the paper for. That should, that should make the cop happy. He can always call the, the guy. The guys that are doing the smog. Yeah. Seeing that I have an appointment with them on the same day for the information to come through to get rid of the light. So, you know, you know, half the time you can get rid of the ticket just by showing them that it's the fixes in the works. Yeah, I'll tell lori. She'll do the dmv paperwork. Oh, I don't know how that works. Crawling into the car and cutting the old O2 sensor off and wiring in this new one I got in my hand. And then I'll. I'll obtain a pass just in case, but I'll. I'll drive it north up Skyway to do the test. They were giving me a hint up here at our little local guys. He goes, you should, you should do it on a flat ground. Don't, don't do it on uphills or downhills. Try to do 12 miles on the flat, which is almost impossible here. Other, other than the highway, you know, even if you go down to Oroville, it's good. There's going to be uphill and downhill parts. If I go north on 5 or on 99, that's the flattest thing I can come up with.

There's a little uphill and a little downhill before you get down there to the long flat again, but I don't think that would affect it that much. All right. I'll call Lori and see about the permit. Set that up for Tuesday or something.

Yeah, I don't. I don't understand how he came up with how. How you run a blue wire, a white wire, and a black and a black wire. He's running the black to the tan wire and a black to the signal wire, which is purple. I don't know how he came up with that. But the blue wire is a power wire connected to a brown wire, and the red and white wire goes to the pcm, the white wire, blue and white. I guess those are the important ones. The black and the black aren't a big deal. Why they call it a signal wire? I don't like that part. But, yeah, the most important one is the pcm. The red and white wire to the white wire. Yeah, it seems like I should be able to turn on the key and determine which one is the power wire, which they want me to connect to the brown to the blue. Yeah, I might try that real fast. Damn it. I didn't bring my good volt meter home. I think I got an extra one, though. Yeah, my test box. I got an Atoms or something like that. That'd be good enough for that simple test.

I don't know what happened. I was in four wheel drive.

Do you chain the front or do you put them on all four? How much time do you want to spend? What's your advantage going to be? But yeah, I can imagine people in the Medford area were not too used to. Well, unless they drove the skus much. But yeah, down at that level it was probably just something they looked at and decided to stay in.

Speaker A: Well, I'm sure the voltage there, the red and white wire that comes off of the PCM. Yeah. That shouldn't be more than 12 volts. So that's, that's how I'm wiring it, basically. And the white, the white one's going to the power wire. That's, that's obviously 12 volts. And the tan and purple are both black wires. That's what I'm going to give a try to, anyway. I guess if I get an unusually loud spark pop, then they got

Speaker A: boy. If I burned up a PCM over that bad information right there, I'd
Speaker B: be jumping up and down.
Speaker A: Doesn't say. Just that he'd call me. Yeah, it would have been nice if they. If he would have sent me a cross schematic on the site. Yeah, that would have been nice. Instead of me just taking his word for it on over the phone.

Would have been cool if my regular smog people down there could have cross referenced that for me as well. Be nice to have two people agreeing on how the wires go. Yeah, that would have been nice. I wrote down the wire colors from the Denso O2 sensor people and I. He looked up the Corvette and told me the wire colors there. Tan, purple, brown, and a red with a white striped wire. So he just did the figuring from there. What I'm thinking though, Jay, is if I go underneath there and turn the key on, I should be able to figure out the brown power wire that they want me to connect to blue. If that one's. If that one's the brown wire showing 12 volts going to blue. That sounds right. And the white wire goes back to the pcm. That's not going to give me a reading that I can test the red with the white stripe, The purple, and the tan wire coming down on the wire that's already in the car there. One, the purple wire says the signal going to black. That's kind of weird, don't you think? You think black was ground? There's two black wires on the. The Denso O2 sensor. Yeah. They want me to run the tan wire to that one and. And the other one down to the red and white wire. Doesn't seem like you'd want to ground the PCM wire brown. Yep. I. I don't like how he decided to send me on the wiring, but you know what I'm going to do is I'm going to turn on the key and see which one is showing me voltage and maybe the PCM input wire. That sounds weird to me. There's no plug down by the O2 sensor. And the. The Chevy is. Which is he. That's what information he gave me. Yeah. Tan, the black and let me see. Purple. The signal wire to black. Yep. The other two white colors for the off the Chevy are purple and. And brown, which they want me to hook to blue. And the white wire. Let me see to the red and white PCM wire. Yep. So anyway, I will do the voltage check when I cut. Cut the wire off the old O2 sensor.

Speaker A: You gotta cut it. Otherwise you gotta follow the wire. It's more than a five foot long wire. From where the O2 sensor is behind the cap. I followed the wires both sides and they go up the firewall. I pop the hood and look under the firewall and I don't see those two wires coming up around by the bell housing. I got no idea where those end up. There might be a plug up there somewhere. But the denso unit comes with a plug on it. But it's only 4 inches long. So you know, I'm cutting that
Speaker B: plug off. Guess I could always go to the Chevy dealer and see how long their wire is, huh? 2004 Corvette. There's
Speaker A: four. There's four O2 sensors. There's two. One on each side. Bank 1 and Bank 2 before the cat. And then there's two O2 sensors after the cat. Bank 1 and Bank 2 and Bank 2 is the one I'm working on. 2004 Corvette.

Speaker A: Okay. The O2 sensor. I was letting the dog out. The O2 sensor is a Denso D NSO and the part number on that is 23-4466-8.
Speaker B: Yeah. 350. Basically. The two
Speaker A: short ones are before the cat, I'm gonna guess, and the two longer ones are after the cat. And those are the wire, though those wires just run up to the. Up the firewall somewhere, which I never could trace them back, but. Yeah. So the Denso has a blue wire, a white wire, and two black wires. No need. They know it's the one after the cat because it won't send information to clear the check engine light on the O2 sensor. So they could do a smog. Yeah.

So the wiring colors on the car are tan, purple, brown, and red with a white stripe. That's what I'm. That's what that Just Answer man told me. You're not supposed to go buy that. You're. You're seeing what you can find. Yeah. Mine just says Denso D N S o First time fit. Then it isn't a Bosch, unless Bosch owns Denzel or something like that. If you just plugged in, it would be a five or six foot long wire that goes from the back of the cat, which is right under the passenger seat. You know, the cats are only about 6 or 8 inches long, so, you know, before and after oxygen sensors. He told me down at the auto parts or Napa where I bought this Denso that all four sensors are the same. Yeah, they only got 4 inches of wire and a plug on them. I don't like the plug being right by the cat either, but it is up above it and out of the way. So I'm not worried about that because I'm just going to cut the wires off and cut the plug off the Denso and. And wire them together. Same thing the just answer guy said. He goes shrink tube and solder the wires and shrink tube. Them best is with the, with the type of shrink tube that makes the seal. I just put silicone inside the shrink tube after I solder it and then shrink tube until you see it poop out silicone. And then that dries and you're watertight. Oh, yeah. I jack it up in the back and put 10 by 10 blocks of wood. Then I can fit under it. Then I jack the front end up and, and put, you know, jack stands, Which I'll probably do up here today sometime. That's. That's going to be my excuse. And then she's got the. Or she'll call me when she gets the pass so that we stay on the legal side of me doing a long test drive. Hopefully it doesn't snow tomorrow like they're calling for, because Corvettes are a little tricky in the snow. Yeah, yeah. And 12 inch tires. The width in the back and tens in the front. Yeah, that's. That's not a horsepower car. Not yet. Not to mention the lowness like you're talking about that, that little rubber piece there that runs across the front. Only three inches, two and a half to three inches off the ground. And I didn't do no lowering. Supposedly this is a stock suspension situation, but it sure looks low to the ground to me. I can barely get my jack under it. Which I'll probably be looking for a new jack an aluminum racing jack and not from harbor freight because that's what I have is a Harbor freight one that barely fits under it and it bleeds off but I've asked it to lift up the front of the log truck and you know that's way more even on just on one corner more than three and a half tons so. That's probably why it bleeds off. I could, I could probably settle for a, for a 3 or 4 ton 3 ton jack all aluminum racing jack that has a pretty low profile but I'm probably only going to be doing stuff on the 38 or the you know her srt that little fiat Brat or yeah my pickup so I can probably get by with the three and a half ton three three ton jack. Speaker B: You know, I'm surprised. Last week I was National Guitar Day and I was kind of hoping that you were going to drop by on that day, but it brought a lot of conversations. Speaker B: Enterprise, the original Red Hat 6 and 7, was trying out a few other distros and then had a chance to pound with Gen 2 while working a second shift at AC Nielsen and they basically said, you know we need you for an hour at the beginning and an hour at the end and for the rest of it bring books, movies and play around and they computers laying around and I asked if I could set one of them up and did and fell in love with the flexibility. You know the downside is you've got to compile your own, compile everything on your own. The upside of it is you don't have to do what the assumptions Stream makes for you. And I have found that to be very helpful, especially as most of my Linux boxes are headless.
Speaker A: Yes, you and I live in a different world, but I'm glad we can find some common grounds on other subjects. You know, if I had to pay that much attention to my poor computer I think I'd probably pull out the stone tablet.
Speaker B: Well, having having Windows and Macs and Linux leads to some good stuff. I had somebody reach out to me after the classes I taught on Saturday and ask about running certain things and fortunately since I'm staring at a Mac laptop I can see if I can test it out and give him a report.
Speaker A: Certainly seen more amateur radio development though on the Mac Front or iOS in recent years and you know, good to see you know that support happening. When I got back into amateur radio, frankly I was very surprised at primarily all Windows based. I thought I was going to need to enter the Linux world and I was just kind of blown away even by the lack of Linux applications for amateur radio. Will, you brought up a great thing for me to ask a question about. I know this last weekend you were teaching some, some subjects digital I think was your subject matter and there was one other thing for your for your classes. So how did that go? Any feedback?
Speaker B: I definitely got a lot of good feedback. As I said I've already got an email. A very long email that I reply to was teaching Chapter 8 Digital for the extra class and then a little add on for the tech class in terms of affordable ways that you can work the world. Because one of my frustrations is we quite often get the new tech up and running and they buy a, you know, a cheap handheld and they can't understand, they can't work outside county and so trying to set up some realistic and affordable expectations for them. But I think they both went well and now I've got to pivot and make sure that I teach the book when it comes to the general class, the digital portion as well. I've already got quite a few slides that say this is what the book says. They're wrong but for the test, remember this?
Speaker A: Yes, for the test, remember this? Well, those questions should be reported because I did notice they did make a couple other changes to the exam pool in the past week here. So you know these things if they are pointed out and correct, you know the changes to the learning materials and the testing materials are made so you know if they are incorrect. But you know a lot of times things are correct or left in the pool which yeah, I've had issues with that as well. Well Danielle, very good. Glad to hear that you are giving back to the amateur radio community and teaching the classes and giving the VE sessions are just so rewarding. I know. This next weekend our extra class, it's a 10 week class that is offered via Z. The extra class is going out this weekend and doing an in the field portable setup and looking forward to. I know they're looking for a couple of Elmers to help with that. Usually we have a really great group of Elmers that go out to support these in field labs for the classes.
Speaker B: I think giving people a chance to be hands on or at least see some of it quite often. I've done a little bit of a hands on demo by logging into my home setup which is Windows based. To be honest, I'm not one of these people that says it's got to all be one os. To me it's find the OS that does the same job for you. And I agree with you. A lot of the good software that's out there is either Linux based or Linux only. And I think the fight honestly between Omnilab or Omniview and Hamlib is part of the problem. I wish that Omniview, Omnirig. I wish Omnirig could run on more than Windows and I wish that the people that have said well I won't develop for it because it's only Windows would stop being so self righteous about it.

Speaker B: Yeah, no. And the whole reason it's a Linux laptop, to be honest, is that the Windows version on it expired. I wasn't going to try and upgrade and it was like, okay, let's just install what I know is free and I know it'll work and if I'm going to do it, I'm going to install the distro of my choice. I prefer the role over the Linux box as I've only got one Ubuntu box and it's my main machine and that was just more out of laziness than anything else. Speaker A: I came up against the same scenario with two of my laptops that I use for portable operations and for VE exams and it just really came down to it. For VE exams all I need is a browser. So I just said okay, for this it really doesn't matter what machine I use. So I'm going to just milk the laptop for a little bit longer until maybe the security alerts start popping up when I try doing something through a browser and then my other apps are I'm not online. You know, I'm doing local logging and local, you know, other digital apps that don't require Internet connection. So I think for now my portable operations are well covered by a Windows 10 laptop. I stayed there, camped there all sorts of things. And it's a beautiful place to think that that's what California is. But it's only a smidgen of California. There you go. And Jamestown is another tiny smidgen of California. But it's a beautiful place to be and we have a lot of nice folks. And I got another story to tell you. And then a lot of hands. So hands enjoyed this area and if you can be lucky enough to get on top of a mountaintop, it looks very fine. Other than that, I just got in another bovine G bump grg a GRS mini bag and cost less than the other one did. But we won't belabor that and I'm very happy with that. So we're going to set that up with our. GMRS radio stations up here and get that going. See how much I can hit with the bovang. I also got a Nagoya antenna for it, longer antenna, so might as well give it a little extra punch right off the bat. Other than that, that should have been about it. The Yaesu 3185 has been a great performer, consistent and solid. So I'm very happy with that. Then we told Rattel that we would help test a little bitty bitty FRS radio which so far not made any contacts and I've given two out and we just can't get synced up. So we still have more work to do on those, but I don't think they're going to be great performers anyway, that's all that's fit to print. We've had three quarters of an inch overnight since midnight, so not much else I could say. Although we need the rain really bad. So keep it coming. K6DCL

No, we we're almost to an inch now, so yeah, when we came on with the net we were just a little over three quarters of an inch since midnight and now we're nearing an inch, so nice and steady. Did Radtel ever respond to let you know if there was any programming software available for those radios or are they intent on keeping those Little mini radios GMRs only?
Speaker C: They're intent on keeping them FRS only. I believe they're another friend of mine who has I've given one of them to. He's a really he's an engineer so he likes to experiment and he said there there was the ability to use Trip, but he hasn't figured that out yet.
Speaker B: So we'll see what happens.
Speaker C: So I think maybe CHIRP can access these. A little bitty, little bitty. I mean three quarters, maybe three inches at most tall. So it's really a little bitty thing. And I don't see me having it use for it. But this is mainly for host things like that. Maybe, maybe campgrounds, who knows. But yeah, you know, I figured I'd say yes and see what it was all about.
Speaker A: Well, in my opinion, those little radios are great to reprogram to use with a node. And you know, I've done that with several FRS and GMRS radios where the factory supported, you know, programming. And so I have several radios around here that they started out as FRS or GMRS radios, but I have turned them into something that I can work with my nodes. So yeah, it's been wet and it started about 10 last night. I was watching TV and all of a sudden there was just this noise outside. Oh my God. I've got a first pass added miracle upon miracle. With all of the failures we had, I had enough to stitch it back together. Yeah, even my setup. He had some great information about mesh in general or Lora and then a little bit of focus on the system that we've installed along with his direction and his organization for the area on the mesh core. So I'm looking forward to probably fast forward Cumievo rewinding and reviewing many times. He had so much good information?
Speaker C: Oh yeah. I mean, while I was watching it, I mean, of course I was there live. You know, I watched through and going back and editing it, I found a whole bunch of stuff that I had not. Not sunk in the first time through. So even if you were there, this is definitely one that's worth reviewing when it comes out. But on video, there's a lot of. He's got a lot of detail in this presentation and he claims 30 minutes. It actually took 45, but who's counting? It's all good stuff. And I have agreed that we'll be working on follow ups to this to see how the technology can be used and is being used for the hobby. So there'll be future videos. Speaker A: Very good. Well, good morning to you. Hopefully all is well with you. And what are you going to be doing with this wonderful time off? I know probably with the new house, you probably have a dozen projects you're working on.
Speaker B: Yeah, unfortunately, that is kind of the case. You know, it's a beautiful day here. Sorry that y' all have rain, but yeah, sun is shining. Nice time, temperature out. We were gonna go do a PODA this morning, but I decided to sleep in instead. Take advantage of the fact that I wasn't working, but Thomas was actually out getting stuff right for home project. We're trying to build some raised planters in our backyard. And then we've been here almost a year now. So we're also taking the day to cover our house and blue tape all the last Minute things for them to come fix before we hit our year mark.
Speaker A: Oh, the little torn pieces of tape on the walls. And hopefully there aren't many little pieces of blue tape. How was the construction experience? Because I know you were not in town for quite a bit of it, but how did that turn out for.
Speaker B: It definitely left a little bit to be desired. We're definitely finding lots of things to blue tape, and we've had them come and fix quite a few things throughout the year. The benefit of that is our entire downstairs floor has been completely replaced. Now that I think about it, most of our upstairs floor has been completely replaced. And we had a couple of other nice things like that that we probably shouldn't have needed to replace within the first few months. But you know what, now it's all shiny and pretty and good for us, I guess.
Speaker A: Oh, other than working around the construction dust. So I did not hear about this. So what happened to the flooring that required upstairs and downstairs replacement? That sounds pretty major. Not just a color choice, I assume.
Speaker B: The upstairs. It was. I don't totally understand it all, I'll be honest, but I guess our walls are floating walls or the floor is floating. I don't know, something. But either way, there were just massive, massive creaks every time that you walked around. And yes, that happens a little bit as the house settles, but it was to the extreme. So we got them to come fix that. I don't know, I think they just did something to attach it better to the walls. I didn't quite understand Downstairs, however, we noticed we have that, I don't know, vinyl wood stuff, and there were these huge gaps in some of the pieces that definitely hadn't been there before. And it turned out it was because it was uneven. Again, I don't fully understand it all, I'll be honest, but they had to come right, rip it all up and pour something down to even it all out and then lay it down again. Yeah, it's been quite the experience.
Speaker A: It sounds like it is. Yes, indeed. That's unfortunate. And it does sound like it's just something, you know, you hate to blame things on the house settling in or, you know, weight distribution as you move furniture in and everything else. But yeah, something like that. You know, you've. You've paid a good amount of money and you have a reasonable expectation for it to be done right. So, yeah, sorry to hear that you went through that. But yes, you kind of got the renewed new house smell and experience throughout the year. Well, let's. So, yeah, Thomas was talking about how he was doing some 5 gallon raised planters for somebody else. So is that what you're going to. He sent over a picture of the project. Is that what you're going to be doing for your backyard or are you working on something else?
Speaker B: It is not. I actually really don't like the look of those five gallon bucket planters, but I know they're super trendy right now. We made the first batch for someone who had requested them and then posted the picture just on our little neighborhood chat and already has a whole bunch of people reaching out, wanting him to build them for them too. So they're very popular for other people. For us, we're just doing the. I don't know how to explain them, but they're like four foot by four foot just in the ground. Raised planter beds. And yeah, we're gonna hopefully plant some things and maybe be successful. Hopefully.
Speaker A: All right. Are these going to be the bulls that you're planting there? That didn't sound right, did it garden in there or flowers? And by the way, Tom just kind of texted me here that he was having a little trouble hearing you, so you might want to check your audio levels on your new note there. Your audio is nice and clear, but it is a little bit low.
Speaker B: Oh, we'll have to go play with it. I guess that'll be added to the. The list of things to do today as well. Yes, they're going to be hopefully for a garden. Thomas keeps asking me what I want to grow, and so far I've told him about 20 different types of tomatoes. And he's claiming that we have to grow other things too. We can't just grow tomatoes.

Speaker A: But let's just think about what goes great with tomatoes. Maybe a little cilantro on the side. Make sure you got some onion sets in there, some garlic. Yeah, I have some basil. Yeah, I think that's a good anchor plant.

Speaker C: Yeah, that's. That's where I've been playing. 20 meters is pretty interesting. This is KO6PMA Garrett in Placerville. Yesterday I was spinning the dial and you were speaking about potas and man, the airwaves are just jammed up with hunters. The pileups are kind of comical. I was having trouble getting through on some of them over.
Speaker A: No, it's quite interesting. You know, as POTA started out, I think it was about nine years ago, there was a of parks on the air that was sponsored by the ARRL. I think that was in 2017, as I recall, maybe 2018. And then it just kind of took off after that as kind of something that organically happened. People, you know, just saw it as a wonderful opportunity to get out of the shack and operate portable. And yeah, to me it's a little puzzling for all of the chase and activating what's going on, but it really doesn't matter what I think because it's getting people on the air. It's an awesome thing. I give out POTA activations when we are in a park and operating for another event. And anything that gets people on the air, you gotta say, kudos, Roger.
Speaker C: That's what's keeping me interested. And trying to find that really light signal in the background in the haze and the sizzling baking, as it were, I found a couple of really interesting connections. And also there's a couple of other nets that just happen and they're happy to have a new guy join in. So quite interesting how expansive the general license becomes over. Absolutely.
Speaker A: You know, with your technician license, you're kind of limited on what you can do for hf. But I must say, in this hobby, I know I spend a lot of time here on the Peter with the coffee breaknet, but my true love is hf. There is no doubt about it. Just, you know, that ability just to work around the world, finding out what band is open by the time of the day, how the activity is for solar, you know, the ionosphere, just everything coming together. It is pure magic. Definitely.
Speaker C: I'm pretty surprised at how far I can hear. I can hear from, you know, South America to Canada. Now it's a matter of just getting and seeing if they can hear me. I'm having a blast. That's all I can say. There's a lot of space out there.
Speaker A: Yes, indeed. You know, and something that you need to kind of, you know, that's a wonderful opportunity Kind of develop different antennas or different install techniques that are, you know, there are some antennas that are great listening antennas but don't do squat when it comes to transmitting. So, you know, that's the part of the hobby that I absolutely love is antennas because, you know, it does. It doesn't really matter how much power you put out. If you can't hear a station or work them, you're just a short wave listener. Well, Garrett, once again, glad to have you as part of our group and I understand that you are willing to take on a very probably one of the most important roles for Summer Field Day. I don't know if you know this yet, but it was told to me that you, you were.

Speaker A: So Garrett has accepted the role of head chef for the, for the dinner, for the barbecue. And I know we all chip in and help, but there is one leader of the orchestra. So we're looking forward to that, Garrett. And thank you for stepping up. I know I gotta say, the chicken that you barbecued, I think it was last year or the year before, was probably some of the best barbecue chicken I've ever had in my life. And I'm not just doing that to stroke your ego. If you stepping into this role brings that level of food prep to our senses, I am all for it. But thanks for stepping in there.

Speaker C: So if anybody wants to know, it's snowing between, I guess, well, not that far down, but between Whitehall and Silver Fork. So I guess it's been raining down in the valley as well.
Speaker A: Oh yeah, in this event since yesterday after last evening, about 10 o' clock between then and now. Let me look at an update. Yeah, we've gotten 3.2 inches of rain since o' clock last night. So when this translates into snow, how much snow have you gotten up there?
Speaker C: I think it started to. Well, I don't know how long it's been snowing, but it's coming down. It's coming down wet and it's coming down pretty good. So it's not that heavy, but it's steady. So instead of just sitting around for the day, I think we might just move towards packing up and getting out of here. Just don't want to deal with whatever happens on the road. Hopefully that's in our rear view. Yeah, but we're not trying to rush to get out of here. But yeah, I'm looking out, it's coming down pretty well. So try to get ahead of it. It's just still Snowing in Meadow Vista?
Speaker A: No, the snow hasn't made it down this far yet. I'm looking out and it's just been rain. No formulation of snow or anything or sloppy stuff. So it's still at a higher elevation, but wow. I just. In the back of my mind, I picture a Norman Rockwell scene of you guys sitting in front of the fireplace, maybe just finishing off the pancakes, looking out the window watching the snow fall. Boy, I don't know. I would not want to put that in my rear view mirror other than. Did you bring chains?
Speaker C: No. And you know, I don't think they're gonna ask me about them if I'm on my way down. But yeah, I didn't.
Speaker A: That's.
Speaker C: What about getting out here though? And I didn't bring the. Normally I don't need chains with the truck, so. And I didn't. We brought the interceptor up, so. And that's all wheel drive, so that's okay. But making. Getting traction might be an issue, but I just, you know, we'll take it slow and steady, but I think I just don't, you know, the other folks on the road, I don't want to have to deal with. That's kind of the idea.
Speaker A: No understand. It's not our driving ability, it's their inability. I get it. Well, it was so great to see you and Pam at the club meeting on Friday evening and definitely I'm glad to hear you guys got away and spent a little time up at the cabin and actually, you know, if you didn't have to worry about others and getting home, it certainly sounds very idyllic.

Speaker C: And it was great. That venue man got up to speak and I was like, no mic, no echo. And you know, actually, you know, the being close to where people are is even better because in the other place, you know, There is probably 10ft, but

Speaker D: good morning in copy I'm Jim one versus Jim two other folks might know not know that we had a Bob 1 and a Bob Bob 2 once upon a time at any rate not a lot to report this morning other than it sure is damp but I've been in radio wise I've been playing quite a bit with the new release of Varac for those who don't know it's a keyboard keyboard chat mode using the Vera modem and it it seems like the fellow who is the prime mover on it who's in Israel I'm getting the feeling the guy isn't married or has so much time in his hands all he can do is pound code in for adding little features to the program because it seems to be like almost the feature of the week not quite that bad but almost but for anybody that wants to play with it I think it eclipses JS8 call let me break so I don't time out and with its features with its performance certainly with a good path it'll rival pactor 3 not that anybody can type that fast but it will rival it. You can send files with now has a BBS feature you can send email to any station that identifies as an email gateway and one thing that's kind of a cool toy that might have some application is an AI portal so again any station that identifies it has a AI portal and the way they identify by the way is by way of beaconing and a little icon showing up to the affected a receive stations window and with AI application like this consider oh I'll even consideration for you Brian. You're up camping there up in the Sierra with your truck and you if you have Starlink and it fails or you don't have Starlink you're up there outside of any cell path and you see a header of smoke that is looks like it's too damn close for comfort and you can go on to var AC look at a station that is beaconing with AI and you can just make an inquiry and say I'm at location such and such could be lat long or whatever and is there any fires reported in the area or you need weather or something like that. So anyway that's the thing I've been playing with making some good contacts and it's a chit chat mode it's not like FT8 where it's slam bam thank you ma'.
Speaker A: Am. Well thank you very much for kind of the overview of rac. I frankly have as about just great difficulty Keeping up with all the new features. And you're right, he must not be married or if he's married, he's much happier in his coding room. But yeah, that's if I have one complaint about RAC is it is so rapidly evolving that I just have trouble keeping up with all the features. But the features he very cognizant of the needs of the E Com community as well as the AI portal. Your example, great example because as you know you get up into the foothills here and you would think oh great, I'm up in the mountains, cell service will be great. No, cell service almost becomes non existent in many areas up there even when you're sitting on top of a mountaintop. So very good example of how you might use that a portal feature. Well thanks Jim, appreciate that. And then let's see how much activity are you seeing on VAR ac? Are you seeing, you know, open bands being actively supported or people? You know, when I first got involved it seemed like everybody was hanging on 20 meters. Are you finding that people are spreading out to actually the bands that following propagation?
Speaker D: Well, my history with Varsi I don't know how long. Well you've been playing with it maybe as long as I have too. I don't know if it's been around for a couple of years and I remember it surfacing and playing with it kind of getting lost in it. It was a little bit overwhelming. So my learning curve has been incremental now of late because my NFIT wire came down late last year or maybe mid year I've been band limited so the only thing I've been up on is 20 and I've got such a poor location here that even looking at an SDR like the one over in Half Moon Bay, KFS Gila Foxtrot Sierra, where it looks like the band is just going crazy. I could barely hear them now addressing specifically keyboard data. I had just couldn't see the activity on JSA call and earlier there are very limited activity on on Bare ac. One of the primary complaints on the forums was people would say okay, well I'm seeing all these people beacon and I usually see a fair stream of beacons that are popping up. I don't see anybody calling CQ and within, you know, since I started really putting my head buried my head into the documentation and trying to learn it for the past several months I've been seeing a real increase in activity in people calling cq even PODA activations with it. So from my narrow perspective it seems like there is a lot more activity than I've seen. And the signal to noise on the paths has been really respectable for making a contact, for responding to a CQ or even throwing a CQ out there and somebody coming back. But you know, I qualify it with. I'm kind of looking through it a straw just because, you know, I fairly, I feel fairly limited in my setup.
Speaker A: Go ahead. Great information on that. That's something I had observed as well, that a lot of people out there were beaconing. You'd get an auto response, you get your signal report and you were just wondering if it was just turning into another, you know, FTA type of an exchange. Speaker D: Yeah, just a couple closing points. I did contact him about the query that I had. It was about trying to do send a specifically to transmit or an email the virtual mail or email to a receiving station and have an automatic disconnect and it has to be done manually. That was the short of it and just kind of a comparison closing comparison between JS8Call and their AC. And I see this from the forums. I guess 8Call was a lot of popularity to it. In fact somebody I follow who plays with stuff in austerity.

Speaker A: VAR AC has got a support team that are all of them work on it, including a couple of people who contribute to the manual and they're a little bit behind the curve now for the manual because of the latest version but the prior version is well documented and so there's tons of information. Good responses on the forums. You go on to the main website for VAR AC and I think there's at least three forums, one a general one, another one for suggestions to what one would like to see happen with their AC and one dedicated to mcom. So I would say in parting that if anybody wants to play with a keyboard to keyboard, whether it be a quick slam bam, thank you ma', am, which you can do with Vera or want to have a conversation,

Speaker B: Yeah, I observed something very similar on the JSA call and what's quite interesting, Winter Field day still relies quite heavily on the JSA call for the contact mode and I think a lot of people kind of have not kept up with the development of the VAR AC just in that it used to be a very frequency specific mode and they really discouraged people using it for, for contacts, you know, for, you know, portable operation for contest and that sort of thing. Speaker B: No, I'm kind of a late comer to amateur radio here on the west coast. I held a license living down in the country of Haiti in about 1981 but then did not get my license in the US until about eight years ago. So yeah, I'm not too connected with the old school community there. But I do know there's a lot of amateur radio operators who live in the Medford area.
Speaker C: His name was Otto. I think he's long since Silent Key. That was back in the 80s and 90s. I used to always work him. Occurred to me, beautiful day here. I guess probably you got an update already on Tennessee but fog, fog, fog early this morning and probably about the time. We put on quite the event for our club with dinners and barbecues and presentations and we do it as almost a five day event for setup and we just have a wonderful time.
