Speaker B: Okay, well, yeah, on this repeater you have to push the talk maybe a quarter of a second before you talk. I think it cut out the first part of your transmission. But also it was a little scratchy. So I wonder how it's coming back. I also wonder if you're putting out only five watts or whatever. I'm putting out about 20. I'm at, you know, half power, mid power on the FTM 400. But I did hear you. Kilo, November 6th, my golf kilo in Chico.
Speaker A: Yeah, this is actually 147.705. So that's a little different. But I thought this is what you meant anyway. Yeah, I hear you just fine. I'm putting out 15 losses. But Corning. This repeater pegs my meter over here. So I don't think I need to be on high power. This thing may need to have the audio turned up a little bit. I think this mic.
Speaker B: Yeah, this is a 147, 105. When you push your push to talk button, it goes over to the trans to the transmit frequency. So in case anyone's listening. Yeah, the output frequency at 147, 105 tone is 110.3. It's All Starlink enabled. So in the mornings they generally play the coffee break net from the W6ek repeater anyway. So. Yeah, this one's connected. Link connected using All Star. Anyway, it's one that some of my friends have put up. Have done a pretty good job. Should be pegging your meter because it's got a lot of power compared to these others. Location is Red Mountain. So it's straight across the valley from you.
Speaker A: Over. Yeah, if I remember correctly, I can get into this one with my little balcony. This has always been a repeater. Yeah, I could get into this and take the meter on that little bow tank. We lived in Chico, so that was a while ago. So I didn't know you actually put this repeater up. I didn't know you were even connected with it. Good for you.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, I didn't put up this repeater or anything like that, but friends of mine have and they moved it from Corning. It was actually around Pasquinta. It was moved to bed north of that. So anyway, it's across the valley from you, so maybe it's still a little. Probably still a little bit south of you there. So anyway, you'd probably have better luck getting into it with your Baofeng than you did before. So it's probably the better location in that regard. I don't know. But. But yeah, this is not the Carla repeater. The Carla 36 repeater probably performed pretty good for you too. And anyway, but yeah, we're not hearing you on five two. So all we're hearing is a little bit of scratch. He could make out an 2, 2 letters of your call. So I can hear scratchiness at about F1 noise floor. So. But I'm on my short antenna right now, so it'd be in that way for a while anyway. I would have work to do to change my antenna location to get up a little higher myself. So I've kind of wanted to be a little less. Less conspicuous lately. Anyway, so anyway, that's the way it goes sometimes.
Speaker A: So your good antenna fell down or something, Is that the deal?
Speaker B: Yeah, my tall antenna, the best antenna I got, Diamond X510. It's at 100ft in a tree without any feed line attached. So fell down a long time ago now at this point. And never wanted to pay a climber to go back up there to try to restring it up there. If I did so send the climber up there, he'd be taking it down, I'd be done with it. So I'd probably still use it, you know, as long as it worked. But anyway, I've got another, another 18 foot tall antenna to put up. But when I do, it'll probably be about 30ft, so kind of where I had it before. And it'll have some decent gain on it because it's a tall antenna. But it'll probably get over to Oroville no problem when I put it up. But it won't go as far as the other one would at 100ft, of course.
Speaker A: Okay, I remember now since you stirred my memory. I remember I tried to get you to put that. Because if you ever had a problem with it that way, all you got to do
Speaker B: really easy.
Speaker A: But everybody has their own way of doing things. But I've got a good friend of mine that's a climber. So we can, we can get up that tree pretty quick and hook your coax back up. And also do that pulley thing that I told you about a few years ago. So you can just bring that up and down anytime you want to and mess with it. I mean, I did that for a lot of years up there in paradise. All of my antennas sitting in 125 foot pine trees. I was always lowering those things up and down and adjusted them. So yeah, that's the best way anyhoo yeah, the antenna. I'm, you know, that's my, my big antenna. But I just got it leaned up against the house right now. I don't even have it up. I've been, I've been wanting to climb up on the roof and mount it. I haven't done it.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, what I have, in case you were interested in it, is one of those roof mount things. It's got like a tripod, like three legs that you can put in different spots and mount that to the roof somewhere or somehow. And then inside of it's where you put a mast so you can clamp down a mast to it to raise it above that. You said you may not need it or you have your other ideas or whatever, that's fine. But just letting you know in the case that that would be helpful at all.
Speaker A: Yeah, I could use that. Put the beam up on that. Yeah, that would be fantastic. But I need to put a rotor on that thing so I can Turn it around. M6AMM.
Speaker B: Yep. I have one of those tiny beams too, but I have no desire to put it up because nobody wants to talk on sideband anyway.
Speaker A: So.
Speaker B: Although I do have a couple friends now that have bought rigs that are capable. So we'll see. One has an antenna just like that too. And he might put. Put it up in Orland. So we'll see. So when he wants to talk inside band someday, then maybe I can put mine up too. But I won't put any rotor on it. Nothing. I'll just go outside and turn it his direction, that's all. Not that hard of a task. I don't have any care that I want to go much further than, you know, Sacramento. That's far enough anyway. I've reached Sacramento on it before.
Speaker A: Yeah, well, when it's mounted on the
Speaker B: roof,
Speaker A: you can't just walk outside, turn it. You have to climb up on the roof. Roof and mess around. Yeah, yeah. I'd rather have a rotor on that thing so I can just point it. He was, like I said, almost meter. And then all of a sudden he went out. I watched this signal just dropped like a rock. He went down. So something happened. Whether it started raining or something, something blocked the signal and things changed.
Speaker B: Well, I would bet that hardly anyone understood anything you just said. So this way, you know, you're probably Q4 quality and about half of what you're saying is making the repeater. So I don't know. Yeah, it could just be conditions like you kind of alluded to. I don't know, but yeah, we could try. We could try a different repeater to see. See how that sounds. You want to try Carlo 36 real quick?

Speaker B: Yeah. So dawn, just to let you know, it is kilo November 6th. KN6MGK kilo November 6th mike golf kilo. Anyway, you keep saying KL6 anyway, but people know me out here for sure. And you are full quieting that time.
Speaker A: Okay. Yeah, that would be Alaska. No, that's what used to be Alaska. Anyway. Yeah, so I'm surprised I remembered the last three letters. It's been a long time, probably a year or so since we talked on the radio. So I look for your call sign around here, but I can't find it. After we moved, everything's gone. But I got the last part right anyhow, what do you expect? So. I'll change that antenna. Maybe tomorrow I'll get up the courage to climb up on that roof. I've been a little bit dizzy here for the last few days, but it has to be done. So I'll get up there and we'll be able to communicate directly.
Speaker B: Pretty sure.
Speaker A: And let me know when you want to do something with that antenna. Trust me, he won't overcharge you.
Speaker B: Yeah, well, I'm concerned about anyone working at my house and climbing a tree like that. So yeah, I'm not in any sort of hurry to do anything about it. Like I said, I would probably take it down. So that way there I don't have to be concerned about it any longer being up there because I don't trust how it was put up there to begin with. So right now, because the way the feed line dropped off of it, it really needs to have someone who knows what they're doing with the radio up there because the likelihood is it's got self amalgamating tape on. Would have to be the antenna part has to be taken off of the, the assembly, you know, and that part stripped off, feed line refed up through it probably would have to go around a tree limb or something a couple times first just to keep that strain relief from problem from happening again. You know, you can't expect tree climbers like the one that put it up there that we paid to trim our trees. He didn't probably know much about radio at all, so anyway, but he did evidently strap it on there pretty good because it hasn't moved since then and other tree limbs have grown up since then. So anyway, it would just end up being a little bit of work for somebody if they were really going to try to make it work again. And I'd also have to get more feed line at this point. Probably end up getting a whole new length of feed line because I would need like 150ft, probably something like that. I think it's actually about 90ft. I don't know. Yeah, I probably have to get 150ft to have one straight long run from antenna to shack.
Speaker A: Yeah, you don't need anybody that knows something about antennas. You just need somebody that knows something about climbing. We can just lower the antenna down and we can do whatever needs to be done right there on the ground and then let him pull it back up and hook it back up again. Yeah, it's not as horrible and foreboding as you think. You probably made it a little bit bigger in your mind. It's small potatoes. We can fix those in antennas pretty fast right on the ground and then just hoist it right back up.
Speaker C: Right.
Speaker B: Hey, is that mark?

Speaker C: KE6JBS. So I wanted to let you guys both know that both of your signals dropped off and got really scratchy on the 105. So it had to been conditions because you both came back up. So both of you were kind of really scratchy. That was just my son.

Speaker A: Yeah, no problem.
Speaker B: That's good to know. Yeah, I was concerned that it was something that was his deal, so makes sense. If it was both of us, then it was something with conditions. You know, weather wise, it's been kind of weird. Some pretty good lighting. I've been told that thunder, Magalia, lots of hail. So yeah, it's gonna be pretty interesting over the next couple days.
Speaker C: Had some pretty good solar flashes. Anyway, I'll let you guys get back to it.
Speaker A: KE6 JBS heater down to just completely gone and then coming back up again. So I figured that was probably what was going on. But right now I'm looking out the window, I can see a hole in the clouds. A nice blue sky up there. We got something to look forward to. N6A double N.
Speaker B: Yeah, there was a bit of a double there with Mark in the beginning. And Marky, I copied what you said because you actually beat dawn out on that one. So anyway, appreciate you come back on that and let us know what happened or what you heard. That's always nice. And so 73 to you, Mark. And yeah, Dawn. Yeah, I don't know. We've had actually okay weather here. It's just been kind of windy and a little cool, so the sun's peeked out a couple times actually.

Speaker B: Yeah, no problem. And yeah, so yeah, these repeaters these days aren't very busy but they won't care how long you occupy them most likely. There's not a whole lot going on on repeaters here lately. A lot of us have moved over to hf. Just enjoy some of that stuff if we're going to be on the radio. But I've got a lot of things to be doing right now that don't involve radio. A lot of gardening kind of stuff, getting seeds ready, things like that to keep me busy amongst getting these TV services going, getting the cell phone stuff all changed over. There's always something just about every day that's got to be done. Just as you know. That's life. Anyway, I think I'm going to go take a walk. So that would be another thing to do. 73kn6mg. Yeah, I'd have more fun doing that too. Getting. Getting your HF rig going up there and that way we could Talk Simplex on HF. Probably on 40 meters at night or even 80 tan 6 MGK.

Speaker B: will show up for sure. It's Southern California that we've got back
Speaker A: online here the last month or so. There's traffic from down there and up
Speaker B: in the northern part of the state, Northern Nevada and Las Vegas. Greater Las Vegas area.
Speaker A: So anyhow.
Speaker B: But yeah, for locals to work, you
Speaker A: got to be on the same repeater. But anyhow.

Speaker A: you new to Pam Radio as well?
Speaker C: Yeah, I'm new to both of them, the system. I've been thinking with it for many years, but I recently cleared my exam, so gladly I'm a new hamp.
Speaker B: Okay, well, welcome to the hobby. And yeah, just make sure you get close to the microphone and talk loudly and clearly so people can hear you because sometimes there's also noise on the links and stuff.
Speaker A: So that just makes it even harder.
Speaker B: But improved it since you first came on. Name here is Tom, by the way.
Speaker A: Mike picker. Tom Tango. And yeah, I've been doing this for way too long now.
Speaker B: I guess there's 85, so it's been
Speaker A: a few years, but anyhow.

Speaker C: Do you have any suggestions as far as Sharla? Something similar to Carlock. I go in the wilderness quite often where I have no signals. I'm trying to see before I go

Speaker A: Yeah, there's a number of link systems
Speaker B: out there, both UHF and vhf. One place to go. Try. You can look at all the different repeaters out There. Then I think they list their, you know, the. Whatever the organization that runs them
Speaker A: is
Speaker B: narc, N A, R C C, that's the coordinating body for Northern California where
Speaker A: they coordinate all the repeaters.
Speaker B: And so, you know, there's different ones that are going to cover different areas as well as all the individual ones within the Bay Area. There should be a number that you can get into. One of the popular ones is the wind system and there's a few others. A lot of them will require memberships and stuff like that.
Speaker A: You want to use them a lot.
Speaker B: But I think once you start from that website and then you dig into
Speaker A: their web pages, you can probably get some more information. Assuming they have web pages for their
Speaker B: system,
Speaker C: That's very helpful. I'll start with the website and going from there. I've been also experimenting with echoleng. I forget what the exact name is. I think it's echoleng. I started my own link as well on the Internet. Trying to figure out how to connect with that. That's another thing I'm looking at.
Speaker B: Yep, there's that, there's irlp, also All Star. And there's, you know, digital modes, bmr, dstar. Different manufacturers have different ones.
Speaker A: Can't think of all of them right now.
Speaker B: And they show all those different modes
Speaker A: and stuff like that that in the NARC website as well. So a lot of information in there
Speaker B: for you that's probably the most up to date. You know, don't believe everything you. You catch out there on the Internet
Speaker A: and other lists that are out there since they're not.
Speaker B: They're not usually as accurate as.
Speaker A: As, you know, the stuff that south out there on the dark website. So anyhow, but good luck with it and keep trying and you'll.

Speaker B: Doing fine. Heading to the meeting.
Speaker A: Alrighty. Same here. Same here. So I've been enjoying some time off. I can't say I've been awful productive
Speaker B: about using it, but.
Speaker A: Yeah, got a couple of vacation days I had to burn up before my retirement. So made a long weekend of it.
Speaker B: Pre retirement party then, huh?
Speaker A: I'm not sure how it happened, but I guess when I was transmitting to you I changed channels on my radio which is really kind of weird, but okay. Yeah, saying I've had a, had a long weekend. Could be I had to burn up some couple of vacation days.
Speaker B: Yeah, I heard you that. Then I, I said pre vacation party, huh?
Speaker A: Yeah, I'm having so having yesterday off for, for President's Day and then two days of vacation. I got a nice five day weekend out of it. Can't say as I've been real productive about it.
Speaker B: Well, if you didn't have inside projects been foreign so it's kind of hard to do outside projects.
Speaker A: Well, today I went and sharpened all the knives in my knife block.
Speaker B: Well, that was productive as long as you didn't take a finger off.
Speaker A: Did not. Did not. But you know when you do, when you do all of the knives in your knife block and then I did a couple others, I got a buck 110 knife and a couple others, a Leatherman and a Swiss army knife. I took the opportunity to sharpen them too. So it's like three hours sharpening knives. But it was worth it.
Speaker B: Yeah, you might be able to actually cut something without hurting yourself. Now dull knives are worse than sharp ones.
Speaker A: You know, it's kind of fun.
Speaker B: I figured this out a little while
Speaker A: ago that, you know, when you finish, they tell you when you're finished sharpening them, you're supposed to strop them to. Yeah, there's supposed to be a little curl when you're sharpening. There's a little curl on the very edge of the blade. And the only way to get rid of that is to strop it. And I figured out oh little while ago that one of my old leather belts makes a pretty good strop.
Speaker B: Yeah, that works on the inside where it's not, it's not polished or whatever or it's rougher. That works for a good strop. I was taught a long time ago about using three different stones to sharpen, you know, three different hardnesses or whatever stone to sharpen a knife and it through triple edge.
Speaker A: Well, I got I got two stones, a 1000 and a 6000 grit. And yeah, that seemed to do this right. Well.
Speaker B: And then if you put any compound on your belt, it's even
Speaker A: a finer
Speaker B: grit
Speaker A: that I don't have. But yes, I had a, I had an old belt sitting around that really, you know, starting to fall apart a bit on the, on the public side, if you know what I mean. But the backside is, is a nice piece of solid leather. So I've been actually using that to strop. I've got a straight razor that I've been toying with and that puts a pretty good edge on that.
Speaker B: Yeah, I got taught when I was up in Alaska. I kind of knew how to do it before, but I was shown again by a guy up in Alaska that was a woodcutter and he, he carried his three little stones with him for sharpening his axes. And he was, it was at a trade show and he pulls out a double bladed, you know, I don't know,
Speaker A: 16 pound axe probably and sharpens it
Speaker B: there in front of you and then chops a tree with it that he
Speaker A: had a little, you know, stump tree
Speaker B: in his booth and then he proceeds to shave his face with it.
Speaker A: Oh my goodness. That's a pretty good edge on that.
Speaker B: Well, that's why. That's the way I test most of the knives I sharpen is on the back of your arm, you know, if it'll shave hair. Got no stubble left. You got it right.
Speaker A: Not sure I got mine that sharp, but they're definitely better than they were. And you know, the, you just drag it. I was just dragging it across the rind of a grapefruit and it was, it was cutting into it. So I figured that that's pretty good.
Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know if I have mine silk sharp as they say, you know, with the katanas and all the Japanese swords. But mine are pretty good.
Speaker A: So I think the last time I sharpen them was a couple of years ago. I should probably do about every six months or so. Good steel.
Speaker B: You can do it more often if it's just a cheap kitchen knife getting rid of the metal.
Speaker A: These are good German knives. I got them when I was fishing overseas and I took advantage of the, of the good price, price that I got on them over there. It's, it's interesting to. I think I paid like $200 for the set and now I look at just a replacement for, for one of the chef's knives. A larger chef's knife would probably cost me about 150 bucks.
Speaker B: Yeah. For a good quality one like that, we bought some pretty good quality ones for my daughter that were in the fifty to seventy dollar a piece range. Yeah.
Speaker A: Quite a while ago, actually, when my daughter was getting ready to move out, I found a pretty good set at Ross. I was really, really kind of surprised. Of course, you know, I think it got a. A nice set for her for, like, 50 bucks. And they're probably close to being as good as mine.
Speaker B: That's kind of surprising, but. Yep, sometimes you find a good deal.
Speaker A: Yes.

Getting ready for the big DX contest, the ARRL International DXCW contest this weekend. Jevons coming up for that. We're gonna operate over the weekend. I started putting up the Buddy Hex during breaks in the rain today. We had a good CW net last Thursday with about six participants I think and hope for another good one this Thursday. That's at 3:30pm on the 40 meter band 7.052 and one other interesting thing I've been emailing a little bit with a long time Gears member hasn't been involved with the club for a long time but he was there back in the early days. That's Jerry Fuller. You might have read about him w6jry. He was the subject of a newspaper article in the ER a couple of weeks ago and Jerry sent me a picture of a Gears looked like maybe taken at a barbecue or something like that back in gift in Midwell park with in about 1950. So today I made a QRP rated N fed half wave from the QRP guys kit for 20 meters and I linked it for 40 meters as well. So with the bullet connectors. And then I needed some antenna insulators. So I designed some quick antenna insulators on Fusion360 CAD and one for wire to wire for bullet connectors and one for wire to rope for the end of it. And I 3D printed those up and they worked pretty good for the, for the small gauge wire I was using. So pretty happy with that. And then I think tomorrow and the next week I'm going to make a ladder line J pole and probably a 10 meter dipole for the poda in case because I hear we might have some technicians coming to the poda on the 28th. So want to make sure we have some gear to make them feel successful and maybe get some contacts. So I think, I think, I think there was some conversation earlier. It's way, way down in power. Numb as a hustler antenna. Hopefully we can damage our superstation. Master expensive piece of fiberglass. And we've got intermittent microwave connections. On one of the other mountaintops. So we'll see a lot of bass going.
Speaker A: Yeah, I saw that blowing through there yesterday. And last night, In fact, it was even. Still a little bit of red there on the radar. Lots of yellows and a couple little spots of red that blew through there. Hopefully it didn't create too much. Too much havoc.
Speaker B: Yeah, I'm just. The upper potency type is the one I'm worried about the most. Like I said, we just bought that antenna mode three or four years ago, but who knows? I don't know. It's definitely. It's definitely not a repeater issue. Like I said, the PA and the receiver are both way down. Hopefully it's a speed line or a jumper or something like that. It got whacked up with ice. But anyways, I'm sure we'll get the microwave shot. On the other mountaintop coming up from the valley. So I think the commercial outage. There's a commercial provider up there that we use. And the entire mountaintops offline. So good news is it's a commercial company. They're quick to fix.

I don't know what it's all about, but I know it's kind of a normal thing for now. But yeah, you just gotta go down to the bottom down there and tell it. Tell it that you think it's safe. Okay. I just started drawing a little bit of junk, so yeah, I'll tell. Go to Supermon and try and try it over there too. Anyway, everything seems to be working good. Advantages that you're aware of that you saw while you're in it. Well, being that you're blind, Maybe not. Maybe not so much. But the cockpit gives you instant access to your. To your bash shell stuff, you know. And then it also gives you access to your firewall and things like that. Yeah, I mean it's. I kind of didn't care for it there at first, but now that. Now that I've seen it, yeah, I can definitely see the advantages of having it. You don't have to use putty, you don't have to use. Wind. Well, I guess WinSCP still has disadvantages, but yeah, you don't have to use putty if you have the cockpit into the terminal from the cockpit. Okay, I was just trying to. Okay. Speaker C: the auto thermometer, but my mechanical thermometer I have in the car said it was 31 degrees.
Speaker B: And the roof and the wind windshield,
Speaker C: and everything was frozen solid. I had to sit and let the vehicle warm up to thaw everything out before I could go anywhere. And everything I've touched this morning that's metallic is just ice, ice cold. I just came from storage where I grabbed a cable, one of these very, very proud cables that YAESU has that connects their radios to their amplifiers. Yes, $74.95 before taxes for a piece of wire.
Speaker B: Yeah, and it doesn't even transmit. It's not even an antenna.
Speaker C: Unfortunately, they're the only game in town, unless you want to build one. And for $74, I think they could build it for me. So in any case. So I have picked up my fancy cable here and I'm headed out to Larry's. So anyway, yeah, it was. It was frozen solid when I walked out this morning. Not, not a hard freeze like, you know, 10 below or anything like that, but it was definitely cold.
Speaker B: Well, may I remind you not to stop and lick the flag pole on the way down the hill. Yes, Yesterday was just bone chilling all day long, never warmed up. I don't think it ever got out of the. Out of the 30s yesterday. Yeah, I know people on the East coast. Wah, wah, wah. 30 degrees is a heat wave for y' all back there. Well, good morning to you. Yes, the good old Yaesu unique cables. You know, everything they make. Like, I had to buy a mini DIN connector for the YAESU radio the other day. Why? Because they put a flat spot on their mini din where the regulars did not. I'm sure there's a lot of other differences. Oh, yeah, the price.

Speaker F: Well Good morning, Brian. This is Rick 86 CDQ in beautiful downtown suburban North Islands. First of all, I guess I should make a shout out to all my fellow Catholics out there. Happy Ash Wednesday. Second of all, National Battery Day. I never knew there was one. But I'll tell you what, in all the years I was a consumer and also an employee a Radio Shack, that battery card was sure a good thing. I didn't mind batteries because it brought people into my store to buy things. And I didn't mind having a battery card because hey, a free battery now and then can help you out.
Speaker B: It was a great marketing ploy, no doubt about it. I also short time employee of Radio Shack in my college years. And yeah, many, you know, I think about being a kid and having that battery card and you go in for one battery and then you just browse and browse and browse and you know, the reality is what can you do with one battery? You're gonna buy something when you, when you're in there, even if it's just a couple more batteries.
Speaker F: Well, not very long ago I bought on ebay a Radio Shack digital multimeter. Very nice one. I had one a long time ago and I screwed up and hooked it up to something that exceeded its tolerances and well, unfortunately it was a good multimeter, but it bought the farm. Well, anyways, I found one on ebay, bought it, opened it up and I'll be damned, inside the battery compartment, what did I find? Radio Shack batteries. It was the green model which was our intermediate one from better than the reds, but not as good as the golds. And they were all fully charged. Now this was just less than a year ago. Those batteries sometimes do last a long time because I remember they found a 9 volt battery that went way back. It was a real old 9 volt
Speaker B: and it was fully charged.
Speaker F: Can you imagine that, Katie? Six CDQ73s and everybody have a good Ash Wednesday. Unbelievable.
Speaker B: You know, and Coppertop, you know, the Duracells, they terrible leakage problem. You know, I have Duracells here that are not even two years old and they're already leaking crazy Radio Shack battery. I'm trying to of. I think the last Radio Shack that I was aware of in the area was up in Grass Valley and that closed down, oh probably, oh maybe almost ten years ago. Eight to ten years ago.

Injured four firefighters and it was not a good day yesterday to be in western or Northwestern or the panhandle of Oklahoma. They had wildfires out the other end. Speaker A: Well you know it's a great thing that the class is being offered. I know they have some really great instruction going on and hopefully that will help you through that chapter five but well, you have a lab coming up this weekend. Looks like there is going to be a good break in the weather so I hope that goes well for you.
Speaker C: Yeah, looking forward to that. That ought to be pretty good. We're going to have that at Jan park and I believe it's Citrus Heights someplace like that but that'll be on Saturday. Speaker D: Good morning, Brian. And this is KN6WQ. I'm currently in north island at the moment, so at the qth it was just too ankle to get off early this morning. I had to get my vest on and put the battery in there. I looked over at the outside temperature, says 37. I'm like, yeah, right, there's ice on everything. Let's see. Man, you know, it's pretty mind blowing to me how we've come so far. Electronics, where, you know, things used to run on thousands of volts or even hundreds of thousands of volts and now we're running like 3, 3.35 volts, 12 volts, 24 volts and you know, and it's, it's like nothing. So it's just amazing how we've come around around and done things where it's a little bit more efficient as far as power is concerned. They're not so hungry and a little bit more safer for those that need to repair the things that need to be repaired. Although does make it a lot harder. Let's see. I think I'm going to go get some real stuff done today. Yesterday we played hooky at the end of the day. It was. I actually took a nap yesterday that was really nice. Actually that even happened. I went to sleep around 9 o' clock or so in the morning and got up around 11:30 so that was cool. And I went and did a couple of little small things. I had a window where I had to go to pick and pull and replace a power steering motor and a Hyundai and then got that done and sure enough it rained again. So God at least had me, had me in mind in that one. And yeah, so that's where I got today. So in the mobile today and gonna go hopefully. I think I have like four, maybe five jobs today and that's it. I'm gonna go try to get a couple things done. I should have got done today for yesterday when it was really dumping. Speaker C: Good morning, Brian. Good morning, Lynette. Your mention of Farrell's ice cream in Sacramento brought back good memories and bad memories. Remember how Farrell's ended in Sacramento?
Speaker A: I was not living here at the time, but as I recall. Please, please tell the story. I remember it involved airplane crash.
Speaker C: Yeah, it was right after an air show. A vintage aircraft was trying to take off it was a jet was trying to take off out of the I'm pretty sure it was executive airport. Did not get airborne. Slid across the end of the Runway and went right into barrels and exploded. It was pretty ugly.
Speaker A: And I don't recall what the loss of life was but man, you know ferals known as one of the happiest places on earth to have something like that happen. I don't think it was ever rebuilt, was it? No, it was not.
Speaker C: I grew up with ferals in the Valley in Fresno and it was quite the place to go when you were a teenager. And yes, I never ate a pig's trough by myself but we shared one among to a lot of my friends.
Speaker A: Okay, well I can tell you I had in the crowd I ran with we our badge of honor. One of the badges of honor, I should say was how many pig trough ribbons you could have hanging obstructing your view in the windshield.
Speaker C: Yeah, there was no way physically I was going to get one of those into me. Let's see, I wanted to mention real quickly I will not buy or use Duracell batteries anymore. I've lost more pieces of equipment to Duracell leaking. The battery that I've had the best success with for long term use that doesn't leak are the ever ready ever ready seem and they have a good guarantee on their batteries as well. Well, I have not had good luck replacing normal AAA's 9v with rechargeable. Just have not had good luck with that over time.
Speaker B: Let's see.
Speaker C: I wanted to mention too that it's not too soon to start promoting the fox hut coming up on February 28th. Last Saturday of the month right after the club breakfast. I've been in college conversation with Marty and Marty has put together. I've seen his cut sheet for the fox hunt for that day. Marty is KO6GXX. So good job, Marty.
Speaker A: Yeah, Marty checked into the net yesterday and I forgot to talk to him about. About the upcoming fox hunt. Yes, the last Saturday of each month in Auburn, California we have a fox hunt. So anybody in the surrounding area, you don't need to be a club member, come on in and we have a ton of fun. You don't need any fox hunting skills. You can ride along with somebody with a little more experience or equipment and have fun. You know, bring an ht, maybe do a little body flagging with your ht. But yeah, it's a great learning experience and above all a lot of fun
Speaker C: with that. I think my egg timer is probably out of sand? I don't know. Do you use sand in your egg timer or what are you using? Electronic one?
Speaker A: I don't know. It's a material kind of colored blue. I assume it's blue tinted sand. Might be silica or something else, I don't know. I don't even know if it's accurate. But I use it. Rechargeable batteries. I'll just mention I do not use. The only rechargeables that I put in a charging base anymore is 18650. Love those 18650. Very awesome battery. But all the batteries I'm buying now, including AA and 9v have a USB C port on them and I find they last a heck of a long time. And I'm using them in the smoke detectors I'm even using in my offset attenuator for fox hunting. So you might want to check those out. Get them on Amazon and very happy with them.
Speaker C: So they have a built in battery management system. I will check those out. That probably is the ultimate solution.
Speaker A: I get one year runtime out of the nine volt batteries, you know, the backup batteries and the smoke detectors and I just, you know, it's great. Just throw them in, grab another fresh one, drop it in and you know, I don't know if you've seen the price of 9 volt batteries anymore, but it has to be a considerable savings. The funniest part of it is as I got home, my wife preemptively gave me a Valentine's Day gift of another two Baofeng radios. So I've gone from two GMRs to five little HT's and in a hot
Speaker B: skip at a job. That is great. And you know, many of us carry the Baofeng radios just because they are so readily available and you know the cost of them is very reasonable. So if you drop one, damage it, they are quick, easy to replace and you can clone them. Yeah. So very good, Will. That is awesome. Big shout out to the Granite Bay VE group with K6BSY Jeff heading up that group. I used to test with them in the past. Great group of people and wish you well. Congratulations. Speaker B: Well, Joel, I do know many people who live in parts that are very creative with their antennas. And Carol, KP4MD and I know that N6EMS Bob too, both of them have standoffs on their roof. Very short standoffs like 4 to 6 inch standoffs above their roof. And so it just is a very thin, almost invisible wire running around the parameter of the roof and not even identified as an antenna or stand out, you know, near the roof line. My mobile, I wrapped it with a couple of ferrite cores on the electrical input or output I guess input. And I'm just wondering if my buzzing is gone or if it's still there. You know, the buzzing that I've heard on you in the past is gone. It sounds good. The only thing I hear is just a little. It sounds like a switching noise, you know, could be it doesn't sound like a Kenwood microphone timing noise, but maybe, maybe some sort of an inverter or something. But no, I would say that is a highly critical ear. But other than that, your audio sounds the best it's ever sounded.

Speaker E: I guess I've been lurking, listening and not always getting checking in. Although sometimes it's difficult to check in here. But I've been around and just enjoying the weather good or bad and from work to pay the bills.
Speaker B: More ham gear. Paying the bills because you bought new ham gear. So yeah, I think the last time we chatted maybe was right before winter field day. Hopefully you had. I think you were headed out for that and hopefully you had a successful event so, so headed to work to pay for some new ham gear. What do you have?
Speaker E: That was kind of a general statement, but specifically I picked up a Nikon IC905 and also the N gig transverter that comes with it should be on the way back. Maybe it'll be in the office today because I had it shipped to work. So that gets me 2 meter, 70 centimeter, 23 centimeter, whatever the 2.4 gig band is, 5 gig band and 10 gig band. Now if I can just figure out a use for all of those bands. Kind of thinking maybe of trying out some eme. But I think that radio is going to be just the start of a pretty big and deep rabbit hole of possible cam radio topics.
Speaker B: Well that is quite the radio. I've looked at that and 2 meter 440, 1.2 gig, 2.4, 5.6. I think the challenge above 440 is just finding somebody else, you know. And I tried doing the 12 band challenge for winter Field day and just to find anyone on the radio above 440 can be quite challenging. So hopefully there's a good user group down in the valley for these frequencies
Speaker E: then I need to go find them. And then a good tall clear hill with a good view of the valley
Speaker B: which I have found for the VHF contest. Very, very important around this area if you want to make those long haul contacts. And of course these frequencies, it's all line of sight. So yeah, there's some beautiful places in the foothills there. Well, congratulations Joe. And so I think you said that's arriving today and did you get the 10 gig transverter with that?
Speaker E: The 10 gig transfer transorder is what should be arriving today or very soon. I had the 905 for quite a while. I'm quite impressed with it. Of course for the price I'd better be pretty impressed with it. But it's way cool. I can bring up a waterfall and also an audio spectrum display all at once. So you got a heck of a lot of info potentially able to be displayed on you. Plus as long as I'm outdoors and can get a GPS sync, I can just bring up the GPS display and know instantly what grid I'm on rather than having to search for some website that's going to tell me.
Speaker B: Nice feature, very cool. I have the 9,700 and you know, really impressed with that. I don't know if you can give a comparison but you know, some of the weaknesses of the 9,700 I heard were addressed in the 905. Did you have any opportunity to compare these two radios side by side for their comparative bands?
Speaker E: Not in person, but I did do some research.

Speaker A: Between the two of them. And I kind of get the feeling that they're filling different niches. The 97700 is more base station and more for satellite work. The 905 is more portable and intended more for soda or field work and also for.
Speaker B: Yeah, very cool. Well, congratulations on the new transverter on the way there. And yes, I think it's very important when you start to get into these higher bands, know who the other operators are, what day they're going to be and what direction their, their antennas are going to be pointing. Definitely can be a challenge. Always amazed to see what they're doing down in New Zealand or Australia, you know, shooting across the open water expanses and the distance that they can cover on these bands. But very cool. EME would be pretty darn awesome and wouldn't be neat if we got something geosynchronous into these higher bands.
Speaker A: Always something to wish for, Always something new to try.
Speaker B: Yes indeed. Well, nice to talk to you there and Joel, you have a great day, a great drive in and yeah, I know it's hard to get into the net some mornings, but glad you made it in today and good to chat with you.

Speaker C: Well, good morning Brian. This is Peter in Nevada City at 3,500ft on our mountain. We've got 14 inches of snow so far and had a power outage that just came back on.
Speaker B: Yippee.
Speaker C: I've been running on generators so I'm looking forward to saving the generator and the fuel if I can get out and switch things over again. Anyway, it's been a cold day.
Speaker B: You know, no snow has fallen yet in Meadow Vista. You know, we're just at that kind of that line where if the snow moves low we'll get it, but usually clears quickly. 14 inches of snow up on Banner Mountain. Hopefully it's something that we don't get. Some cold snap afterwards that will lock it in. How long was your power out for?
Speaker C: Well, the power was out for almost 23 hours. It went out yesterday morning at about 9:30ish and just came back on. I just Got the notification, so I had to go out and check the meter to see. And sure enough, the meter's lit up so I can now transfer back over.
Speaker B: Yeah, last time we lost, lost power was during Snowmageddon. And luckily we were only out for a short period of time. But yes, some of those remote areas can be down for many, many days. I think out in Weimar, one location was out for almost what, eight days or so. It was a crazy amount of time. Well, I'm glad to hear that your power came back on. And it was cold enough outside that you probably could just set the milk on the back porch.
Speaker C: Well, that's what the generator is for. Keep the refrigerator going and of course to keep. Keep the batteries charged and the radios operating. But yeah, no, it's quite cold this morning. It's 27 degrees here. Hasn't budged. So if we get any more precipitation, it'll be pretty cold and hopefully be pretty light and dry. Powdery, kind of. So that was.
Speaker B: That would be good.
Speaker C: Anyway, just thought I would check in. I did try yesterday, but with all of the kind of packet loss and things that were going on, you weren't hearing me. So it's nice to be heard today. And your signal seems to be stronger today as well. So I'm not sure what. Maybe you knocked the snow off the antenna there at the vault.
Speaker B: Yeah, yesterday was one of those technical nightmares, I gotta tell you. Our voter system was down, so we were on a backup receiver, which is not as good a coverage, of course, as the voter system. And yeah, it was. I was coming in yesterday through All Star through my node, which has a lot of noise on it. It was just a less than optimal day, but glad to be back to normal operations. Well, I'm sorry, Peter, that I had forgotten your name. It has been a while since we chatted and I had moved all of our 70,000 check ins over to the archive the other day. So we're only going back to the first of the year right now. But glad to have you drop in and make it more often. And hopefully you don't need any help to dig out there. I know some things. You know, we have another system coming in, so hopefully that doesn't lock in.
Speaker C: Well, no, I've got good neighbors and I've also got a nice Honda snow blower which does a great job. So we get out and try to knock things down before. Before they get too high so we can get in and out if needed. A lot of trees down up here though, so we've had a lot of power outages in the area. Sort of reminiscent of Snowmageddon when I had 48 inches on the ground and we were out of power for 12 days. So thank goodness that's not happening again.
Speaker B: Very similar situations, though. You know, the SAP is starting to come back up and there are some trees that are starting to bud out already. And yeah, I was hoping that this wouldn't turn into another Snowmageddon. So I guess in many ways we've dodged two of the bullets. Third one is on the way. Peter have a wonderful day. Speaker B: exiting last year and into the beginning of this year I had one that just, you know, started out as a cold but it just hung on for about almost three weeks and just could not lose the dry cough. Strange, strange that it would freeze in Auburn but not here.
Speaker E: Good morning Brian. Good morning everyone. Greg Ko6h well, according to the official thermometer up on the roof it just touched 32.2, was low last night at about left at 3 in the morning it took a dive and got down to 32.2 kind of bump, bumped around until the sun came up and now It's a balmy 37. So I don't know the rain. Let's see, the rain according to the instrumentation ended about what was it? About 7 o' clock yesterday. So I haven't checked the physical rain gauge yet but the electronic one claims no rain since midnight. So I have no idea what happened yesterday. Anyway the rain has been decreasing and the temperature going down so between the two we might dodge this one. I don't know. Remembering back to 1980, what was it? 89, 89, 90 somewhere back it was President's Day weekend, 1990 I think it was with the. We had 8 inches of snow here and paralyzed the place but the kids had fun. Toboggan and all that kind of stuff got on out down the street. They went yay. And it was the best disaster you could imagine because you know it was a three day weekend. Friday was, it was the Storm knocked out power. Saturday, sunny day. You hear chainsaws off in the distance as people are starting to clean up. Power came back on on Monday and then back to work on Tuesday. Oh, well, ko50h back to you.
Speaker B: And the kids loved it. Parents remembered it a little bit differently, but the kids loved it. Well, I just checked. You know, to be a good ham radio operator, I had to open up my weather app and see what my weather station is saying here. And yes, shows that we got about 20th, 20th of an inch yesterday afternoon, but then nothing overnight. And for this system though, almost right. Just shy of seven inches of rain. So it dumped pretty darn good.
Speaker E: Yeah, I measured three inches the first after the first day, then inch and inch 80, 85, I think it was just under two inches. And then we'll see what when I go out check it again today, see what I got yesterday. To the. Let's see to the storms. Batteries are charged. Yay. Battery day. Actually not totally charged. Backup batteries at 100%. The main shack battery is at 84%. And I'm getting a whole 24 watts down from the sky. So that's good. Got almost nothing yesterday. To the GPS quandary, it sounds like the Damon got stuck and something happened there. And so it got behind by a couple minutes, a couple seconds. My car, the one with the GPS in it, has a little aftermarket telemetry thing that I put in. It beeped me yesterday, says, hey, your car is going down the road, but it's in park. Meaning suggesting that it's being towed
Speaker A: or
Speaker E: flatbedded in this car's case. But of course it's safely in the garage. Every so often just goes into these fits where it has that. I think it's a GPS constellation alignment thing just happens that don't get a good view of the right satellites in the sky. And as the signal flips around, it thinks it's in a different place all of a sudden. And therefore it moved and it's moving. So if you average it, you know, you end up with a velocity owner. That's what's going on. KO60H.
Speaker B: You know, I looked to see if there was any, you know, any changes to the datum, which of course had happened several years ago when they, I think, changed the. I'm trying to remember if it was a month or something in the datum was changed, which they were convinced was going to crash the entire system. And yeah, I was kind of curious what might have happened. But yeah, three, four voters were all registering the exact synchronized Time. But the voter in the master in our vault was two seconds off. And it should be synchronizing and it just stayed consistent. It didn't drift anymore. It just stayed consistently two seconds off. Kind of interesting. Something to look for next time. Self driving. Tesla's gone haywire. Leave the world behind. A 2023 movie. It has a good scene that should make all Tesla owners hair stand up on the back of your necks.

Speaker F: Good morning Brian. You know the weirdest thing about that GPS issue is that the master was either two seconds ahead or all of the remote rtcms receivers were 2 seconds behind. Being 2 seconds ahead seemed really difficult to me. And having 6 of the other ones 2 seconds behind seems almost impossible as well.

Speaker B: I don't know what to make of that either. Yeah, yeah, it would make sense if something slipped behind. But to actually jump forward, that is pretty interesting. Over to you there Greg. Leave the world behind 2023. If you haven't watched it, you gotta. Your Tesla may just take. Now yours isn't self driving but they will just take off and there'll be a big pile up in the the northeast somewhere.
Speaker E: Yeah, that's of course the worry is when all these things have a mind of their own. But the mind is a little bit squirrely. Doug, you might check the log and see where the GPS thinks it is and see if it moved because two seconds. I'm not sure how far that is in terms of horizontal distance on the surface, but it might be a diagnostic kind of thing that your location see if it had changed recently and maybe that's the source of it. It thinks it's somewhere else. It's not. And of course there's a lot of trees around the vault there, so perhaps shadowing us up kind. But you guys will figure it out. It seems to be working right now. I'm on.

I believe there were like, as I understand, I think there were somewhere around 16 people out, 4 guides and 12 folks were out doing a cross country skiing outcountry skiing adventure and avalanche hit and I believe they last evening I heard that they had brought six people out, two were hospitalized. Does anybody have any updates for have they located any more of those that were involved yesterday?

Speaker A: Yeah, go ahead Jim, with your information.
Speaker D: Yeah, I read on the the Guardian news media outlet this morning so I can only believe it was that might be among the latest. They're still looking for the remainder of the party they've been unable to locate and still in search mode. And you're correct, six were rescued, two hospitalized. They had one guide for a party of 15. They originally thought 16 but just the entire party. Apparently it was a backcountry expedition supposed to last a few days which suggests that they weren't downhill. They were up, you know, cross country skiing. But that's in the Guardian this morning. N6MED.
Speaker A: Well, thank you for that update. Yeah, so interesting. The report I had heard yesterday was that they had four guides. So if they only had one guide for that many people that, you know, maybe they were experienced, maybe they just needed somebody that could trail or something. But it does seem kind of, you know, not going to quarter quarterback them from home here. But how unfortunate a situation. 10 sounds like 9 maybe still missing. But thanks Jim for the update. Speaker E: Hey, Brian, thanks for the recheck. So Dan, WQ gave me a USB to RX232 adapter at one point and I put it in a special place and cannot find it. Did he give you one? Because if he did, you could bring it along with the rtcm.
Speaker A: No, but I have many adapters because Rs2 332 to USB adapters, I always included those and I have some FTDIs as well as some Prolifics. So I have several different brands that I used to include with some equipment that I used to sell. So if you want me to bring those along, I will.
Speaker D: Roger that.
Speaker A: Roger dodger W2VX clear. All right. Yes, indeed. We're still doing some searching of the log, so you have to have some the right tools for the job. All right, Patrick, into DYI after morning.
Speaker C: Good after morning, Brian. And well, you're talking about timing issues, which I have one of those. It's certainly not as critical, but I just noticed I'm on an HT this morning that has the ability to synchronize with gps. And well, it would have the ability to do this if it had the GPS chip. The firmware supports it, the radio supports the chip, but there's no GPS in this radio. So it has a function where you can download a file and it'll tell you what satellites are passing overhead and it will tune into those frequencies if you wanted to. And that of course requires two things. It requires a GPS to synchronize your time and also to give your location. You can actually set the location manually, but I can't figure out how to set the time. And when I checked this morning, it was July 18, 2061.
Speaker A: Well, I was going to comment your audio this morning is kind of garbly, very short chop to it and that might explain maybe you have a little corrosion on your Flux capacitor there.
Speaker C: Yeah, I'm trying to diagnose this kind of odd intermittent issue with this particular node. Some nodes it does it. Some nodes, it's. It's perfectly stable. It doesn't like 51018 at all on the outbound and trying to figure that one out, but. Yeah, go to Radio Shack and get a new flux capacitor, I guess.
Speaker A: Or maybe put some dielectric on the connection next time before you wrap her up. So with this radio that you're talking about with the built in GPS in the software but not in the hardware, happen to be a RAD tel?
Speaker C: No, it's a tyt. You actually can put a chip on this thing. There's a cheap chip you can get on eBay for seven bucks that'll add GPS to it, but it doesn't come with it.

Speaker D: You know Brian, we no more than got done talking about batteries this morning and smoke alarm batteries and the smoke alarms in this house just went crazy. I'm sure it was no connection to what we were talking about or anything you did, but Lisa and I got the eight foot ladder out because if you have a chain system and that is smoke alarms that are all connected together, the way you tell which one is initiating the alarm, you look for the one that's blinking red. It'll go from green to blinking red. So we knew it was the one in the front room which is no less than 10ft off the floor. The hardest one to get to of course. Pulled it down, checked the battery, battery was good. But I took it out in the garage and I blew air through it and I chased a little spider out of it. So that's another tip is if you have a smoke detector that's going off at random and you can't figure out why and the battery's good, you might pull look for insects that have moved in there because they tend to be a little warm inside. So the insects like the warmth.
Speaker A: KC6 that's the late thanks to the recheck. How interesting. That spider was so intent on getting away from the noise of the coffee break net that he went in and took out your smoke detector. You know what? Ireland had their saint that chased out the snakes and we've had rat control issues and I guess I am the spider whisperer. So yes, coffee breaknet, we are leading the spiders away from your domicile. Speaker A: radio, so valued as a carrier of critical information at various times in the world's history, has been declining. The BBC, however, has brought back an emergency shortwave radio service to deliver programming to Iran. Graham Kemp, VK4BB has those details.
Speaker C: The turmoil in Iran that led to an information blackout in that nation has prompted the BBC to launch a temporary shortwave radio service. Listeners there medium and short wave frequencies have been carrying programs each day starting at 16:30 UTC. The content includes news and analysis relevant to Iran and provides a global perspective. In announcing the service, the BBC said this was part of its tradition of providing crisis broadcasting, adding that its broadcasts will remain on the air until the end of March. Half hour programming is broadcast starting at 1630 UTC on on both 702Khz and 9465Khz. Then repeated starting at 1800 hours UTC on both 702Khz and 5935Khz. This is Graeme Kemp, BK4BB Victory was
Speaker A: never sweeter for a ham in Scotland who has successfully appealed the local planner's rejection of his tower plans. We learned more From Jeremy Boot G4NJH
Speaker D: the foundations dug and the concrete base with anchor bolts installed. The greatest obstacle facing John Grieve GM3RTI's tower project has been the Scottish winter weather, so John needs to proceed slowly with pulleys, wire ropes and other work. But it was only a few months ago that he could not proceed at all. Despite supporting statements from neighbors and the Radio Society of Great Britain, the local Perth and Kinross council rejected John's planning application for the tilt over telescoping structure in the garden behind his home in the village of Ingchur. It was to have had an operating height of 15 meters or 50ft. John told Newsline that he'd had little opportunity to communicate directly with the council beforehand. The rejection stated that the project would quote, have a detrimental impact on the character and environmental quality of the application property and the surrounding area. John, who's also an RSGB Region 2 representative, contacted the RSGB Planning Advisory Committee for an appeal in October. In mid December 2025 he received a 10 year approval. John also gained enthusiastic support on social media. An update on the RSGB's Facebook page reached more than 35,000 supporters in just a few days, according to society spokeswoman Heather Parsons, M7OWS now if only John could see similarly appeal against the Scottish winter weather. Speaker A: the US the state of New Hampshire is poised to approve amateur radio license plates for vehicles registered to ham sell envy. KB3TZD has that story.
Speaker E: Amateur radio operators in New Hampshire are eagerly awaiting the passage of a measure by their state lawmakers to create a new vanity license platform type for motor vehicles that clearly identifies the owner of the vehicle to be an amateur radio operator. A public hearing was held last month on the House bill, which would authorize the creation of vanity license plates and decals that identify amateur radio operators by their Federal Communications Commission call sign. If the owner chooses not to display their call sign, they may use a standard issue plate featuring a lightning bolt set symbol to indicate their status as a licensed amateur radio operator. If lawmakers approved the bill, it would still need the signature of Governor Kelly Ayotte before becoming law. Governor Ayotte has shown support of ham radio proclaiming June of last year Amateur Radio Month in recognition of radio operators important roles in public service and emergency communications. Speaker A: People in or near Central Texas who rely on GPS received a warning from the US Military base at Fort Hood that wide ranging GPS tests there might cause interference with their own personal devices. Kevin Trotman, N5 pre picks up the story from here.
Speaker F: Farmers, pilots and smartphone users and anyone else who relies on GPS to get from here to there have been paying close attention to an alert from the US Military base at Fort Hood in Texas. The announcement said that throughout February the region that includes Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and even Oklahoma City could experience interference and disruptions. The final rounds of testing are to be held on Friday the 13th and 14th from 3 to 5am local time and resuming nightly from February 15th through the 22nd. The holders of these licenses, which are still renewable indefinitely, created the society in 2020 as a welcoming place. It became the home of a ragtue net that operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday on 14 decimal 213 MHz at 1700 UTC, with Scott Ensley W5HVO as primary net control. Although 445 hams hold numbered certificates of membership in this group, they extend a welcome to any advanced and extra class operators as well as DX hams who would like to check in. The elimination of the Advanced Class license was undertaken as a streamlining move, an action that created A three license system that also removed the entry level novice class. Speaker A: Some new elements have been introduced into the Radio society of Great Britain's annual construction competition. Jeremy Boot, G4NJH explains what's different as
Speaker D: in previous years, the RSGB's construction competition has six categories which emphasize the hands on building and designing of projects, activities that are rooted deeply in amateur radio. Organisers have introduced a new category this year, Reimagination, which still draws its challenges from radio but produces projects with an appeal to non amateurs such as individuals in the maker community. The society hopes that the these innovative entries will shine even more of a spotlight on what ham radio is all about. This is an international competition. Entries can be from anywhere in the world, but competitors must belong to the RSGB. The deadline for entries is 1st March. He'll be operating mainly on CW and FT8 on 40, 30, 20, 17, 10 and 6 meters. Listen for a team of operators with the call sign T45FM on the air using CW, SSB, FT8 and FT4 from the lighthouse at Punta Maya, Cuba, IOTA number NA015. They'll be active from the 20th to the 22nd of February during the American Lighthouse this weekend three special call signs will be on the air for several weeks, marking a half century of German research in Antarctica. Listen for DA0 Ant, DM50 Ant and DP50 Ant from 15 February through to 30 April. Omar DK1CE is calling QRZ as PZ from Bamako, Mali until 1 March. Listen for him operating mainly on SSP and FT8. As anyone who has ever worked a satellite or does so regularly working these birds as they are known, has its reward. A group of researchers in Australia has also been working the birds, a species known as a white backed swallow, using temperature sensing radio transmitters. They've received some great results as we hear From John Williams VK4JJW.
Speaker H: No matter which hemisphere you live in, no doubt this year has already shaped up to be a time of weather extremes. Wherever you are, you have a lot in common with the white backed swallow, a prevalent species here in Australia with the very uncommon ability to survive despite freezing temperatures to blasting heat. We're talking about as much as 50 degrees Celsius, that's 122 degrees Fahrenheit. And we Australians especially can relate to learn how the birds survive, researchers in central Australia's Sturt national park outfitted some of them with tiny transmitters. This was not an avian parks on the air. This was a research project to monitor the birds physiological responses through bio logging, a way to record and transmit their body temperatures changes as the birds slept in their burrows at night. The result a highly successful worked all states of bird physiology. The collected data confirmed the scientists theory that a deep torpor, an essential near shutdown of metabolism, heart rate and breathing was essential for these birds, just as for some other bird species such as the tiny hummingbirds in some regions of the world. The results were recently published in the journal Current Biology. The the scientists called the transmitters key to their findings because data could be gathered in the wild instead of an artificial setting such as a laboratory. Speaker A: I'm helping the friends put some furniture together at her office. And he was curious about ham radio too. And so I thought I'd try the 85 if anybody was around.

Speaker A: People that are interested in possibly coming to our meetings. Yeah,

Speaker A: Be cool if he lives up in Dobbins or Loma Rica area and kind of in a hole. And every once in a while they would get a little worried when the Internet telephone go down. So they were thinking of getting a radio.
Speaker B: There's a lot of them up in that area up there. They're on GMRs.
Speaker A: Okay. That takes a license too, doesn't it?
Speaker B: Oh, that doesn't take a license. I think they. They got to purchase some kind of a license or something. But when they buy a license, it goes for the whole family. It's not a HAM license. It's the GMRS and quite a few. Quite a few people. It's getting pretty popular up there.
Speaker A: All right, we'll check into it. I think that radio that I want has it programmed into it.
Speaker B: I would still encourage him, you know, to go with the ham license too, because you can always purchase the other one. But when you. When you purchase the license, it's good for the whole family.

Speaker B: And they use it for the. Basically for the fire season or whatever, you know, for whatever.

Speaker A: Yeah, it's metal with wood. You know, it has the cams and the Allen wrench, the whole nine yards. You sure can't. Can't tell by the instructions which way they go until the end.

Speaker A: This is kind of a new radio. It's ICOM ID 5100 DSTAR radio. I still haven't figured out the dstar of it all, but at least I got it programmed now.
Speaker B: You got this half working. I don't know about that dstar stuff either. Haven't messed with it or don't even own a radio that has it yet.
Speaker A: I tried to get it to work. I guess you can do the GPS thing in the whole nine yards, like EPRs, I guess, but I haven't. I haven't even come close.
Speaker B: Yeah, I had the APRS working on the other half of this radio, but my GPS battery swelled up, so I gotta get a new battery for it.
Speaker A: Oh, man. I would have one of those up flying models a few weeks ago, and I could smell it. I was like, man, what is up going on with this battery? So I unhooked it and stuck it on this metal lip on our. One of our flight benches. And about 45 seconds later, that sucker went up.
Speaker B: Yeah. When they decided they don't want to work anymore, it doesn't take long.
Speaker A: We're like, oh, we need to have a bucket of sand out there. So eventually we're going to have that. Hopefully they get it soon.
Speaker B: Yeah. Where do you fly?
Speaker A: The Wheatland Amphitheater. The Red Barons RC Flying Club.
Speaker B: All right. Yeah, I drive by that way Once in a while. I stopped in there once and looked around but nobody was there. I also stopped by the one that's out by Thunder Valley.
Speaker A: Yeah, the Amos Club. They're a very successful club with lots of people. It's a nice place.
Speaker B: I've been there a couple times. A little bit expensive. Nice club but a little expensive to join.
Speaker A: Ours is a steep eater but we're not crowded. We only have like 30 people.
Speaker B: Yeah, their initiation fee is pretty steep but I can see why. I mean they gotta keep up the facility.
Speaker A: Ours is, you know we pay a monthly rent and we also have a restroom that we. And we mow the lawn. We take care of the lawn and the tractors and all that kind of end up costing us. This is KB1ND.
Speaker B: Yeah, everything costs a little bit, you know fuel and pay for the restrooms to be monitored and maintained.
Speaker A: Got kind of lucky we'd be able to. We found a tractor with a mower deck for fifteen hundred dollars and it works. The John Deere works fantastic.
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, that's the club had the
Speaker A: money to buy it.
Speaker B: That's good. So was my P up.
Speaker A: Only takes us 2 hours to mow about 10 acres.
Speaker B: That's not too bad. Pretty good sized lot to keep mowed.
Speaker A: You're welcome to come out anytime. We usually fly. I usually go out of there on Saturday. You find me on here. I usually have my radio on on the way out. I used to go around at about 8:30, 9:00 clock and I leave it on when I'm out there. So anybody from our club for sure welcome to come out there.
Speaker B: Yeah, I just gotta get mine out, make sure they're ready to go. I haven't flown in a long time but mine are all radios, all fm. I don't even have one of the new radios yet.
Speaker A: Oh, they still work. They work great. I even have one ham radio that I used to use was the green wire and I. I still have it. I put a new battery in it but I don't use it. I use the other stuff.
Speaker B: Yeah, if you're the only one flying FM it doesn't matter as much at the particular location. Instead of having to spend the Money for the 2.4 I've got one of the any link upgrade things on on the radio but I don't know that it's as reliable.
Speaker A: No idea. I never, never tried it. I'm just using the spectrum. It works pretty well.
Speaker B: I don't know.
Speaker A: I keep debating on changing to something with a little bit better gimbals. In the old days, the radio said I had to have better gimbals and spectrum on their kind of plastic. Bit weird. Yeah.
Speaker B: Some of the open source like FR sky or whatever it is, they're not too bad on price and supposedly have high grade gimbals and stuff in them.
Speaker A: Exactly. They have the same gimbals in Radio Master. I think that's one I've been looking at. I don't know.
Speaker B: At least that one could work with my receivers.
Speaker A: You know, I have probably 20 airplanes that have a receiver in it and be a lot easier. It all adapted to that.
Speaker B: Yeah. As far as I know the 2.4, as long as the spectrum pretty much works.
Speaker A: All my stuff originally had FM. All the planes I fly are 70s 80s airplanes. So they all had a wire in
Speaker B: them at one time. Yeah, that's what mine had.
Speaker A: What kind of plane do you have that had that?
Speaker B: Curious. I've got a Sig Cadet Mark two. That's from the. I didn't know exactly when that kit was out. And then PT40 and great planes. Learjet.
Speaker A: Nice. Yeah, that's probably early 80s for like the SIG Cadet stuff. I remember those planes everywhere. And then I have like super chaos, great plane, super chaos. I have the pretty kid chaos. I have. All of it's like family heirloom my uncle built. So I got a stick, a big stick. I got solitail. But I find mostly the pattern old pattern plane with glow engine.
Speaker B: Mine are all gas flow engines. Whatever you want to say.
Speaker A: I think it's better in long run. I mean you really think about it. You buy four batteries, you know, at $40 a piece and you have one go bad and then. Yeah, I'd rather stick with a 20, $30 gallon worth of fuel.
Speaker B: Yeah. And I think that, you know, you're not worrying about running out of battery power as fast. You know your flight battery, if you got a decent one, will last all day.
Speaker A: Exactly. Yeah. The lysbe batteries work pretty well. Yeah.
Speaker B: I still got nightcad in mind. I gotta upgrade that to a little
Speaker A: ify
Speaker B: whatever flight pack. But yeah, with gas. I mean my cadet, I fly till I tired of flying before it runs out of fuel.
Speaker A: WP6, AXM repeater. That's awesome. Yeah, I kind of do the same. I actually run some on nicads. And the reason I run them just because I have the older servos. So when you have the older servos, you don't want to overpower them, you know, with the light. Be a little bit, kind of a little bit on the edge of like the servo. So I'll run like a 6 volt nickel metal hydride in there and that's pretty good that way. And then I know I'm. I. I feel better sometimes having an old school battery in it.
